Compiled verses from Qur'an on specific subjects: Muslim (Traits and Character Qualities)

We have been sharing verses from Qur'an and then compiling these as per specific subject for quick reference. Today we share the verses from Qur'an which define a Muslim and his various attributes and traits.

Before we do that, just in a few lines describing a person known as Muslim. All non-Muslims know that a Muslim is a follower of Islam, who are monotheistic and worship one, all-knowing God, or Allah as in Arabic. According to the Quran a Muslim is one who has absolutely surrendered to Allah and his commands and believes in the oneness of God without any associates and helpers. 

Thus, a Muslim not only submits himself wholly to one True God, but also believe in whatever commands have been given in the Qur'an. These Divine Commands pertain to all walks of life of a man, whether personal, inter personal or social with due respect to rights of others, whether Muslims or non-Muslims. He adheres to respecting the five pillars of Islam and lives a life of Siraat e Mustaqeem. 
A Muslim who attains a high degree of perfection by adhering to all tenets of Islam without any hesitation and doubts, is known as a Mu'min.
A word of caution here: A Muslim with a beard and skull cap but not adhering to the tenets of Islam will still be a Muslim for he has taken a shahada. But he has a weak faith in Allah and is overawed by evil. That does not mean that there is a something wrong with Islam for Qur'an and Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad are only sources of guidance. Those who adhere to these guidelines are better Muslims as compared to those who skip many obligations and taint the religion in the eyes of non-Muslims. Just like there are good or bad Jews, Christians, Hindus and Buddhists, there are also good and bad Muslims. The verses given below give out the character and traits of a true and God-fearing Muslim. And it is these qualities that are attracting more and more non-Muslims to Islam every day.

We now share, herein under, all those verses (already posted separately) that define a Muslim, his traits and character already posted, to serve as a ready reckoner and reference wherever needed:

That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

Compiled Verses from Qur'an on specific subjects: Allah - the Only God

Whenever, the Muslims use the word Allah to address the One True Monotheistic God, non-Muslims instantly believe that "Allah of Muslims" is something different from the Lord, the Creator of the universe, revered as such since Adam appeared as the first human on this earth. Rather the word Allah is mocked by them for they think Muhammad (Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) coined this word and is the same Divine authority as was worshipped by the idolaters and disbeliever before advent of Islam. Some even call Allah as the Moon God Allah and so many other names.

No matter how non-Muslims perceive Allah and interpret the Arabic translation of God, the fact remains that Allah is the same Lord worshipped by all revered prophets of Allah before Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and as mentioned in all Divine Scriptures (that is Psalms, Torah and Bible, besides Qur'an). However, there is one major difference between God of Muslims and God of most the Christians. While the God of Christians is three (that is the Father, son and the holy ghost), the God or Allah of Muslims is one True God without any associates or partners. Many Christians have now started to understand the reality and everyday many Christians around the world are entering in the fold of Islam by taking Shahada.

Hereinunder are some clarifications about Allah and God:
The Arabic word Allah literally means “The God”. Believers in Islam understand Allah to be the proper name for the Creator as found in the Qur’an. The name Allah is analogous to Eloh, a Semitic term found in the divine scriptures revealed to Muhammad’s predecessors Moses and Jesus (may peace be upon them all).

The use of the term Allah is not confined to believers in Islam alone — Arabic-speaking Christians and Jews also use Allah in reference to God, demonstrating thereby that followers of Islam, Christianity, and Judaism believe in a common monotheistic Creator, a fact that many people are surprised to learn.

Muslims believe that God has no partners or associates who share in His divinity or authority and that God is transcendent, unlike His creations, and thus has no physical form. Nor is God believed to exist in (or be represented by) any material object. A number of divine attributes or “names,” which serve to describe God, are found in the Qur’an (link given below). [1]

Compiled verses from Qur'an on Specific Subjects: As Salat (Prayers)

After one pronounces the Shahada, the declaration to become a Muslim, the first obligation imposed on him is to offer five obligatory prayers between pre-dawn to later after dusk timeframe. This highlights the importance of As Salat, without observing which one's faith in Allah cannot be cemented. 
The observance of Salat is the key to other acts of worship. The Muslim worshipper, who observes the Salat at the right time and in the manner in which it has been stipulated or prescribed, positions himself for a series of blessings from Almighty Allah. In fact, Salat provides an excellent means of communication between a believer and God. Each word of Salat is in fact a form of a supplication to invoke countless blessings of Allah. During Salt, a believer opens up his heart to Allah and can make any legitimate request to Allah for realization. However, care must be taken not to address Allah during Salat to ask for anything which is not legitimate or calls for harming someone.

Thus, the goal of Salat is to bring the Muslims closer to Allah. By attending prayers in the masjid, one also gets closer to other members of the community which furthers add up to building of a bondage between believers and make them a useful member of community. By getting together, one can share each other's happiness and grief, and may come to know of suffering of someone who can then be helped through obligatory and voluntary charity, that is Zakat and alms.

The importance of Salat can be known from the fact that even during war believers are asked to make two groups: While one group offers Salat, the other guards them against any surprise by the enemy. And when one group finishes, they replace their positions so that the second group too gets to offer their prayers. 

Even during travel, one is not absolved of this obligatory act. However, due to discomfort of travel, the even number cycles of the prayer are cut to half.  

Throughout Qur'an, the emphasis on observing Salat, followed by Zakat, is in abundance. It has been amply highlighted that those who do not guard their prayers slowly and gradually drift away from remembrance and evil overshadows him from whose shackles it becomes difficult to free oneself. Thus, it is only adherence to Salat regularly five times a day that one can avert the enticement of the Evil and remain steadfast.

Compiled verses from Qur'an on Specific Subjects: Indecency and Satanic Machinations

Remember Satan, the same dirty guy who mislead the first of the human beings, Adam and Eve, and enticed them to eat the forbidden fruit? And for violating their Lord's directive, their shame was opened to them and they hurriedly wrapped them in leaves. And for this disobedience, though they were forgiven when both of them pleaded to be forgiven, they descended to earth with one clear warning: Beware of Satanic machinations.

Indecency begins by exposing one's shame to others. From here one falls into trap of Satan's machinations and then he continues to commit many others sins that believers have been cautioned about. We must never let the evil forces prevail upon us and try our best to follow the path as Qur'an shows us. And if ever we commit a sin, we need not go to holy men, priests and others for forgiveness. Rather we should directly plead our forgiveness to Allah alone and no one else. The following supplication that was made by Adam after they fell into trap of Satan should be immediately recited, as given in Surah 7. Al-A'raf:23, and the sin repented and promise made with Allah for never repeating it:

قَالَا رَبَّنَا ظَلَمۡنَاۤ اَنۡفُسَنَا وَاِنۡ لَّمۡ تَغۡفِرۡ لَـنَا وَتَرۡحَمۡنَا لَـنَكُوۡنَنَّ مِنَ الۡخٰسِرِيۡنَ‏ 
(7:23) Both cried out: 'Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and do not have mercy on us, we shall surely be among the losers.

So let us fight out the evil and not be friends of evil, as directed by Allah in Qur'an:
Those who believe fight in the cause of Allah, and those who reject Faith Fight in the cause of Evil: So, fight ye against the friends of Satan: feeble indeed is the cunning of Satan. (سورة النساء, Surah 4. An-Nisaa, Verse #76)

Selected verses from Qur'an about Resurrection

There is no denying the fact that this worldly life is but a temporary abode for the man, for it has to come to an end and a new life for all living and dead earlier will begin on and after the Day of Resurrection. Though atheists and many other do not believe in the life of the Hereafter, yet the reality will unfold one day when their arguments against it happening will be blown in the air and they will have to be made accountable for their weird ideas and disbelief in One True God and His decision to end the earthly life and make every soul that ever lived since Prophet Adam (may peace be upon him).

In Qur'an, Allah warns the man of this day to happen when every soul will be fully repaid of his good or bad deeds. We have already shared a number of posts on the subject. In this post, we have compiled all earlier posted posts about Resurrection for consultation and to serve as a ready reckoner:
May we be warned and fear the day which is bound to happen and continously seek forgiveness of our sins and bad deeds and reach out to those whom we have wronged and ask for their forgiveness, lest it is too late!!

Selected verses from Qur'an on Importance of Charity in Islam

Islam is not only name of a religion but a complete code of life for it addresses all social issues and recommends their solution. That is why it emphasizes the need to take care of the poor. Although no two are men are blessed equally, the majority is composed of the poor, in terms of means of sustenance, lesser than the others. This makes a test case for the rich to take care of the poor and test case for the poor to test their patience, called Sabr in Arabic.

Thus, for helping the poor, Islam has institutionalized the distribution of wealth in the form of obligatory charity, called Zakat, and voluntary alms called Sadakat. Owing to its importance, Zakat is placed at third place among the Five Pillars of Islam, and comes best after the declaration of faith (shahada) and prayer (salat). Therefore, being charitable and looking after the weak and poor assume an essential duty of each Muslim. 

In Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Ayat 19, it has been said: In their wealth there is a right of the beggar and the needy. And in 24-25th verses of Surah 70. Al-Ma'arij it is said that in their wealth there is a due share of the beggar and the needy. Thus, by giving charity, every Muslim fulfills his duty to those in need.

Man's Regrets: Would that we were brought back to life? Then we would not give the lie to the signs of our Lord

Man has always been ungrateful. Whenever Allah sent prophets and messengers to them so that they follow the one true path that would ultimately lead them to eternal prosperity and wellbeing, he has always negated the Divine messages and preferred to live a life of worldly joys and lewdness. And whenever he was told that there would be life after this worldly life is over and that he would be resurrected to answer for the sinful life he had enjoyed, he just mocked the prophets and ridiculed them for they think that worldly life is all that there is and once a man dies and becomes dust, how come he be lifted alive again and made to appear before his Creator.

But when reality would unfold and he would find him standing on the edge of the raging fire of hell, he would cry out to be sent back to worldly life again so as to make amends. For such sinners, the following 27th verse of Surah 6. Al An'am was revealed:

وَلَوۡ تَرٰٓى اِذۡ وُقِفُوۡا عَلَى النَّارِ فَقَالُوۡا يٰلَيۡتَنَا نُرَدُّ وَلَا نُكَذِّبَ بِاٰيٰتِ رَبِّنَا وَنَكُوۡنَ مِنَ الۡمُؤۡمِنِيۡنَ‏ 
(6:27) If you could but see when they shall be made to stand by the Fire! They will plead: 'Would that we were brought back to life? Then we would not give the lie to the signs of our Lord and would be among the believers.
Then it would be too late and even Allah would tell them that one life wasn't enough when prophets after prophets brought them His warnings? And even if they are given a life again, they would still revert to their worldly enjoyments and set aside any advice of prophets to follow the true path.

Ibn Kathir explains: 
The above said verse means that they lie when they say they wish to go back to this life so that they can embrace the faith. Allah states that even if they were sent back to the life of this world, they will again commit the disbelief and defiance that they were prohibited.

( وَإِنَّهُمْ لَكَـذِبُونَ and indeed they are liars.) in their statement that ("Would that we were but sent back! Then we would not deny the Ayat of our Lord, and we would be of the believers!' Nay, what they had been concealing before has become manifest to them. But if they were returned, they would certainly revert to that which they were forbidden. And indeed, they are liars. And they said: "There is no (other life) but our (present) life of this world, and never shall we be resurrected.')

Verse By Verse Quran Study Circle Explanation: Wishes and Hopes Do Not Help One When He Sees the Torment - There are three basic principles of Islam: Tawheed [Oneness of Allah], Prophethood and Belief in the Hereafter. All other articles of faith fall under these three. These principles guide human beings regarding who they are and what their purpose in life is; whoever understands these finds guidance.

In this ayah, Allah subhanahu wa ta`ala mentions the condition of the disbelievers when they are made to stand before the Fire on the Day of Resurrection.
If you could see when they will be held over the (Hell) Fire! They will say, “Would that we were but sent back (to the world)! Then we would not deny the Ayat of our Lord, and we would be of the believers!”
The word wuqifu [وُقِفُواْ] is from the root letters wau-qaf-fa [waqf] and it means “to stand, to come to stand or pause”. Such as waqouf-e-Arafah, the standing on the Arafat. The wrongdoers and the deniers of the truth will be detained and forced by the angels to stand by the edges of Hell, and to observe the horrifying punishment far beyond their imagination.

Witnessing the chains and restraints of the Day of Resurrection, along with seeing the horrible, momentous conditions in the Fire they will wish to be sent back to the worldly life in order to perform righteous deeds, refrain from disbelieving in the Signs of their Lord and be among the believers.
In Surah Bani Israeel Ayah 102 Allah subhanahu wa ta`ala narrates a conversation between Prophet Musa `aalyhi salaam and Fir`awn, “Verily, you know that these signs have clearly been sent down by none but the Lord of the heavens and the earth as eye-opening evidence.”
The Signs of Allah are eye-opening evidence yet people deny them. Upon seeing the punishment in the Hereafter, people will wish for another chance.

We have this one chance and there will never be a second chance. So, time is now that we read the holy scriptures and try to follow the truth contained therein, worship one true God, do not associate anyone with Him and stay clear of the path of the evil forces. Time is now to still make amends, repent our wrongdoings and ask forgiveness of One True God before our worldly clock stops and we are made to stand with our conduct sheets handed over to us. Pray we get our conduct sheets in our right hand, for those holding these in their left hands will be ones mentioned in the verse above.
May Allah help us understand Qur'ān and help us to act upon the commandments of Allah contained therein. Aameen.
