Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ of reciting Surah Al Sajda and Surah Al Insaan in Fajr Prayer on Fridays

Friday assumes a special day in the lives oof Muslims all over the world. For on this day, the Muslims join together to attend the Friday Congregational prayer as an obligatory act in place of the usual noon prayer, the Duhr prayer. and it is on Friday that the revered Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to recite two surahs from Qur'an, that is Surah Al Sajda and Surah Al Insaan, in the pre-dawn prayer, the Fajr prayer, 

This act of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is mentioned in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī (Book 11 - Friday Prayer كتاب الجمعة / Chapter 10: What should be recited in the Fajr prayer on Friday باب مَا يُقْرَأُ فِي صَلاَةِ الْفَجْرِ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ) as Hadith 891, given herein under:

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ـ هُوَ ابْنُ هُرْمُزَ ـ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقْرَأُ فِي الْجُمُعَةِ فِي صَلاَةِ الْفَجْرِ ‏{‏الم * تَنْزِيلُ‏}‏ السَّجْدَةَ وَ‏{‏هَلْ أَتَى عَلَى الإِنْسَانِ‏}

Narrated by Abu Huraira: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to recite the following in the Fajr prayer of Friday, "Alif, Lam, Mim, Tanzil" (Suratas- Sajda #32) and "Hal-ata-ala-l-Insani" (i.e. Surah-Ad-Dahr #76).

The Surah sajdah is placed at the 32nd place in the Qur'an while Surah Al Insaan (also called Surah Ad Dahr) at the 76th place. There doesn't seem to be any correlation of these two surahs placed so wide apart in the Qur'an. Yet the Prophet of Allah recited these in the first and second rakats of the Fajr prayer. One may wonder why, for these two surahs are quite long. Once Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) got angry with Mu’aadh (may Allah be pleased with him) and rebuked him for that.”. Well, I too got inquisitive and after lot of effort finally found an answer about the correlation of these two surahs. I will share this beautiful and interesting correlation in one of my next posts.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Do not feed the devil (Sunnah Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

Food is one of the many blessings of Allah that has been bestowed upon the man for his sustenance. While most of us are blessed with this blessing, countless still are devoid of even a few morsels to remain alive. Every day we watch photos and movies of children dying of hunger while we at our end leave food on our plates to be thrown away in the garbage and wasted away. 

It has been sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ not to waste even a very small amount of food in his plate and even eat if something fell down for, he said nothing should be left for the Devil. 

This sunnah has been mentioned in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (The Book (#36) of Drinks - كتاب الأشربة / Chapter # 18 It is recommended to lick one's fingers and wipe the bowl, and to eat a piece of food that is dropped after removing any dirt on it. It is disliked to wipe one's hand before licking it, because of the possibility that the blessing of the food may be in that remaining part. The Sunnah is to eat with three fingers / باب اسْتِحْبَابِ لَعْقِ الأَصَابِعِ وَالْقَصْعَةِ وَأَكْلِ اللُّقْمَةِ السَّاقِطَةِ بَعْدَ مَسْحِ مَا يُصِيبُهَا مِنْ أَذًى وَكَرَاهَةِ مَسْحِ الْيَدِ قَبْلَ لَعْقِهَا) as Hadith number # 2034

Anas reported that when Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) ate food he licked his three fingers, and he said:

وَحَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ، وَأَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ نَافِعٍ الْعَبْدِيُّ قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا بَهْزٌ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ، بْنُ سَلَمَةَ حَدَّثَنَا ثَابِتٌ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ إِذَا أَكَلَ طَعَامًا لَعِقَ أَصَابِعَهُ الثَّلاَثَ ‏.‏ قَالَ وَقَالَ ‏"‏ إِذَا سَقَطَتْ لُقْمَةُ أَحَدِكُمْ فَلْيُمِطْ عَنْهَا الأَذَى وَلْيَأْكُلْهَا وَلاَ يَدَعْهَا لِلشَّيْطَانِ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ وَأَمَرَنَا أَنْ نَسْلُتَ الْقَصْعَةَ قَالَ ‏"‏ فَإِنَّكُمْ لاَ تَدْرُونَ فِي أَىِّ طَعَامِكُمُ الْبَرَكَةُ ‏"‏ ‏.

"When any one of you drops a mouthful, he should remove anything filthy from it and then eat it, and should not leave it for the Satan. He also commanded us that we should wipe the dish saying: You do not know in what portion of your food the blessing lies."

And what do we do: Feel shy of picking up something that falls down and eat it if it falls on clean earth, what to talk of licking our fingers for it may look against the so-called etiquettes. Let us not waste food and let each morsel of it be eaten away and not fill our plates more than our appetite. And if we do have surplus food, we should make an endeavour to pack it up and give it to someone who cannot even afford one meal per day.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Prophetic Prayer While in Prostration (Sunnah Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

As Salat / Prayer is a one-to-one means of communication between a servant and his Lord. It is the time when a servant must invoke many blessings of his Lord and seek forgiveness for his past sins and misdeeds. Although prophets of God are above sins or misdeed for which they should be sorry for and seek forgiveness of their Lord, yet they would still supplicate for maybe they could have hurt someone unknowingly or said something that could have meant something different what actually means and could annoy someone.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ always supplicated for his blessing and blessing of the entire Ummah, whether alone or in company so that others too learn these supplications and often recite these for their forgiveness. The Hadith being shared today covers the same theme as mentioned in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (Book # 4 The book of prayers كتاب الإيمان / Chapter (What Is to Be Said While Bowing and Prostrating)) as Hadith number # 1084:

وَحَدَّثَنِى أَبُو الطَّاهِرِ وَيُونُسُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الأَعْلَى قَالاَ أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ أَخْبَرَنِى يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ عَنْ عُمَارَةَ بْنِ غَزِيَّةَ عَنْ سُمَىٍّ مَوْلَى أَبِى بَكْرٍ عَنْ أَبِى صَالِحٍ عَنْ أَبِى هُرَيْرَةَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- كَانَ يَقُولُ فِى سُجُودِهِ « اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِى ذَنْبِى كُلَّهُ دِقَّهُ وَجِلَّهُ وَأَوَّلَهُ وَآخِرَهُ وَعَلاَنِيَتَهُ وَسِرَّهُ ».

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that when he prostrated, the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) used to say: "Allahummaghfirli dhanbi kullahu diqqahu wa jillahu, wa awwalahu wa akhirahu, wa 'alaniyatahu wa sirrahu (O Allah, forgive me all my sins, great and small, first and last, open and secret.)"

A simple yet very well-meaning prayer which covers all kinds of sins one may have committed in his life. We may remember this supplication by heart and may recite while prostrating or even otherwise to be saved of the punishment of our committed sins.

Prophetic Supplication To seek refuge with Allah from the difficult times

We are all prone to difficult times and haunted by evil forces. In such trying times, there is no one to turn to for help and ease of our sufferings other than our Creator. Prophets too had been through difficult times and bombarded with Satanic machinations to take them away from the true path as shown by our Creator. We have shared many supplications attributed to prophets and that of last of the prophets Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Today we share yet another supplication attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as it appears in Sahih al-Bukhari (Book of Invocations - كتاب الدعوات  - Chapter 28. To seek refuge with Allah from the difficult moments of a calamity) as Hadith 6347: 

حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، حَدَّثَنِي سُمَىٌّ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَتَعَوَّذُ مِنْ جَهْدِ الْبَلاَءِ، وَدَرَكِ الشَّقَاءِ، وَسُوءِ الْقَضَاءِ، وَشَمَاتَةِ الأَعْدَاءِ‏.‏ قَالَ سُفْيَانُ الْحَدِيثُ ثَلاَثٌ زِدْتُ أَنَا وَاحِدَةً، لاَ أَدْرِي أَيَّتُهُنَّ هِيَ‏.

The above quoted Hadith is narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to seek refuge with Allah from the difficult moment of a calamity and from being overtaken by destruction and from being destined to an evil end, and from the malicious joy of enemies. Sufyan said, "This narration contained three items only, but I added one. I do not know which one that was."

We should remember these supplications by heart and often recite these to invoke many blessings of Allah to avert any difficult times or as protection from evil forces so as to avoid an evil end.

Prophetic Sunnah When hearing the Call of Prayer (Adhan)

Adhan ( أَذَان ), the call for prayer, is made five times a day from all masjids around the world to tell the believers that it is time for Salāt/prayer. Unlike other religions where bells are sounded or horns are blown, the call of prayer is a set of Arabic words pronounced by the Adhan Caller, called the *Mu'adhdhin. And how beautiful words are said to glorify Allah, His revered Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and calling believers to masjid to bow their heads to Allah.

* The Mu'adhdhin / muezzin (Arabic: مُؤَذِّن) is the person who proclaims the call to the daily prayer (Salāt) five times a day at a masjid/mosque. The Mu'adhdhin plays an important role in ensuring an accurate prayer schedule for the Muslim community. The first Mu'adhdhin was a former slave Bilal ibn Rabah, one of the most trusted and loyal sahabah (companions) of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.  The call of the Mu'adhdhin is considered an art form, reflected in the melodious chanting of the adhan. In Turkey there is an annual competition to find the country's best muezzin.

It has been the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to reply to each verse of the Adhan when the call of the prayer was being made. The Sunnah is reported in Sahih Muslim (The Book of Prayers - كتاب الصلاة ) as Hadith 385 and attributed to the second caliph of Islam 'Umar b. al-Khattab. It Is Recommended for the One who hears the Mu'adhdhin to Repeat His Words, Then To Send Salat Upon the Prophet (saws) And Ask Allah to Grant Him Al-Wasilah

'Umar b. al-Khattab has been reported as saying that:

حَدَّثَنِي إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ، مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَهْضَمٍ الثَّقَفِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، عَنْ عُمَارَةَ بْنِ غَزِيَّةَ، عَنْ خُبَيْبِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ إِسَافٍ، عَنْ حَفْصِ بْنِ عَاصِمِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ، عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ "‏ إِذَا قَالَ الْمُؤَذِّنُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ‏.‏ فَقَالَ أَحَدُكُمُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ‏.‏ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏.‏ ثُمَّ قَالَ حَىَّ عَلَى الصَّلاَةِ ‏.‏ قَالَ لاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللَّهِ ‏.‏ ثُمَّ قَالَ حَىَّ عَلَى الْفَلاَحِ ‏.‏ قَالَ لاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللَّهِ ‏.‏ ثُمَّ قَالَ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ‏.‏ قَالَ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ‏.‏ ثُمَّ قَالَ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ ‏.‏ قَالَ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ ‏.‏ مِنْ قَلْبِهِ دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ ‏"‏ ‏.‏

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: When the Mu'adhdhin says: Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest (اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ), and one of you should make this response: Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest (اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ); (and when the Mu'adhdhin) says: I testify that there is no god but Allah ( أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ), one should respond: I testify that there is no god but Allah ( أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ), and when he says: I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah ( أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ), one should make a response: I testify that Muhammad is Allah's Messenger ( أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ). When he (the Mu'adhdhin) says: Come to prayer (حَىَّ عَلَى الصَّلاَةِ), one should make a response (اَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللَّ): There is no might and no power except with Allah. When he (the Mu'adhdhin) says: Come to salvation (حَىَّ عَلَى الْفَلاَحِ), one should respond (اَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللَّ): There is no might and no power except with Allah, and when he (the Mu'adhdhin) says: Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest (اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ), then make a response: Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest (اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ). When he (the Mu'adhdhin) says: There is no god but Allah, a (لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ) nd he who makes a response from the heart: There is no god but Allah, he will enter Paradise ( لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ ‏.‏ مِنْ قَلْبِهِ دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ).

We should also respond to the call of the prayer as has been Sunnah of the revered Prophet of Allah.  It has also been reported in Sahih al-Bukhari (Call to Prayers (Adhaan) - كتاب الأذان ) / Hadith 614, wherein Jabir bin `Abdullah has been reported as saying:

حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعَيْبُ بْنُ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ "‏ مَنْ قَالَ حِينَ يَسْمَعُ النِّدَاءَ اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ هَذِهِ الدَّعْوَةِ التَّامَّةِ وَالصَّلاَةِ الْقَائِمَةِ آتِ مُحَمَّدًا الْوَسِيلَةَ وَالْفَضِيلَةَ وَابْعَثْهُ مَقَامًا مَحْمُودًا الَّذِي وَعَدْتَهُ، حَلَّتْ لَهُ شَفَاعَتِي يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ ‏"‏‏.‏

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Whoever after listening to the Adhan says, 'Allahumma Rabba hadhihi-dda` watit-tammah, was-salatil qa'imah, ati Muhammadan al-wasilata wal-fadilah, wa b`ath-hu maqaman mahmudan-il-ladhi wa`adtahu' [O Allah! Lord of this perfect call (perfect by not ascribing partners to You) and of the regular prayer which is going to be established, give Muhammad the right of intercession and illustriousness, and resurrect him to the best and the highest place in Paradise that You promised him (of)], then my intercession for him will be allowed on the Day of Resurrection". 

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Prophetic Supplication for Protection against Straits of the World and the Hereafter

Today we share yet another Prophetic Supplication attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for protection against the straits of this world and the Hereafter. This supplication has been mentioned in Sunan Abi Dawud (Book of General Behavior (Kitab Al-Adab) - كتاب الأدب ): Hadith 5085 [Grade: Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani)/حسن صحيح :  (الألباني) حكم)]:  

Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin:

حَدَّثَنَا كَثِيرُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا بَقِيَّةُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ، عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ جُعْثُمٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي الأَزْهَرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْحَرَازِيُّ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي شَرِيقٌ الْهَوْزَنِيُّ، قَالَ دَخَلْتُ عَلَى عَائِشَةَ رضى الله عنها فَسَأَلْتُهَا بِمَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَفْتَتِحُ إِذَا هَبَّ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَقَالَتْ لَقَدْ سَأَلْتَنِي عَنْ شَىْءٍ مَا سَأَلَنِي عَنْهُ أَحَدٌ قَبْلَكَ كَانَ إِذَا هَبَّ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ كَبَّرَ عَشْرًا وَحَمِدَ عَشْرًا وَقَالَ ‏"‏ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ عَشْرًا وَقَالَ ‏"‏ سُبْحَانَ الْمَلِكِ الْقُدُّوسِ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ عَشْرًا وَاسْتَغْفَرَ عَشْرًا وَهَلَّلَ عَشْرًا ثُمَّ قَالَ ‏"‏ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ ضِيقِ الدُّنْيَا وَضِيقِ يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ عَشْرًا ثُمَّ يَفْتَتِحُ الصَّلاَةَ ‏.‏

Shariq al-Hawzani and I came to Aisha (Allah be pleased with her) and asked her: By which (prayer) the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) began when he woke up at night? She replied: You asked me about a thing which no one asked me before. When he woke up at night, he uttered: "Allah is Most Great" ten times, and uttered "Praise be to Allah" ten times, and said "Glory be to Allah and I begin with His praise" ten times, and said: "Glory be to the King, the Most Holy" ten times, and asked Allah's pardon ten times, and said: "There is no god but Allah" ten times, and then said: "O Allah! I seek refuge in Thee from the strait of this world and the Day of resurrection," ten times. He then began the prayer.

The above quoted supplication is one of the best formats to supplicate. As can be seen, the Prophet of Allah would begin addressing Allah with His many attributes, as have been highlighted in bold black above. He would repeat every Godly attribute ten times. And thereafter he would make a supplication, in this case the following:

"‏ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ ضِيقِ الدُّنْيَا وَضِيقِ يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ ‏"

"O Allah! I seek refuge in Thee from the strait of this world and the Day of resurrection,"

As can be noted he repeated every attribute and the supplication 10 times and would then begin his prayers. We should also begin our prayers by first appreciating our Creator by His many attributes to invoke His infinite mercy and then make the supplication.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.  

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

Prophetic Supplication to Seek Refuge from All ills (Sunnah Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

The life of prophets has never been easy. On one end, they were busy spreading the words of God and motivating them to come under the fold of Godly cover. And on the other hand, teaching prayers and supplications by giving them very well worded supplications so that the believers could not find them at loss of proper words while making a supplication to invoke the countless mercies of their Creator.

We have been sharing such supplications as Prophet Muhammad ﷺ supplicated so that others could remember and follow. Herein under we share a Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as mentioned in Sahi Muslim Book (Number 48) Pertaining to the Remembrance of Allah, Supplication, Repentance and Seeking Forgiveness ( كتاب الذكر والدعاء والتوبة والاستغفار ) in 18th Chapter: Supplications [of the Prophet (SAW)]

Zaid bin Alqam has been reported as saying (Hadith 2722):

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَإِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ نُمَيْرٍ، - وَاللَّفْظُ لاِبْنِ نُمَيْرٍ - قَالَ إِسْحَاقُ أَخْبَرَنَا وَقَالَ الآَخَرَانِ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ، وَعَنْ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ النَّهْدِيِّ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَرْقَمَ، قَالَ لاَ أَقُولُ لَكُمْ إِلاَّ كَمَا كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ كَانَ يَقُولُ ‏ "‏ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ وَالْجُبْنِ وَالْبُخْلِ وَالْهَرَمِ وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ اللَّهُمَّ آتِ نَفْسِي تَقْوَاهَا وَزَكِّهَا أَنْتَ خَيْرُ مَنْ زَكَّاهَا أَنْتَ وَلِيُّهَا وَمَوْلاَهَا اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عِلْمٍ لاَ يَنْفَعُ وَمِنْ قَلْبٍ لاَ يَخْشَعُ 

وَمِنْ نَفْسٍ لاَ تَشْبَعُ وَمِنْ دَعْوَةٍ لاَ يُسْتَجَابُ لَهَا ‏"‏ ‏

Translation:

Zaid b. Alqam reported: I am not going to say anything but only that which Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) used to say. He used to supplicate:" O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from incapacity, from sloth, from cowardice, from miserliness, decrepitude and from torment of the grave. O Allah, grant to my soul the sense of righteousness and purify it, for Thou art the Best Purifier thereof. Thou art the Protecting Friend thereof, and Guardian thereof. O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from the knowledge which does not benefit, from the heart that does not entertain the fear (of Allah), from the soul that does not feel contented and the supplication that is not responded."

The supplication in this hadith is quite comprehensive, covering various aspects of a person’s well-being, both spiritually and in terms of character. Let’s break it down to understand the meanings behind each of the phrases.

The Supplication:

Seeking Refuge from Negative Traits and Weaknesses: "O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from incapacity, from sloth, from cowardice, from miserliness, decrepitude and from the torment of the grave."

• Incapacity: Asking for protection from being unable to do good deeds, fulfill responsibilities, or achieve what is beneficial.
• Sloth: Seeking refuge from laziness or a lack of motivation, which could prevent a person from performing acts of worship and fulfilling their duties.
• Cowardice: Asking for protection from being afraid or lacking the courage to stand up for what is right or to protect one’s faith in times of trial.
• Miserliness: Seeking refuge from being stingy, hoarding wealth, or being unwilling to help others when needed.
• Decrepitude: Asking for protection from old age that weakens a person’s physical and mental capacities, preventing them from being able to serve Allah and others effectively.
• Torment of the Grave: Seeking refuge from the punishment that one might face in the grave due to bad deeds or neglect of one’s duties in life.

Seeking Allah’s Help for the Purification of the Soul:

"O Allah, grant to my soul the sense of righteousness and purify it, for Thou art the Best Purifier thereof. Thou art the Protecting Friend thereof, and Guardian thereof."

The supplicant is asking Allah to grant their soul the ability to do what is right (righteousness) and to purify it from corruption, sin, and negative traits.

Purification of the soul is a central theme in Islamic spirituality. It refers to cleansing the heart and soul from pride, greed, envy, and other spiritual illnesses. Allah is acknowledged as the best and most capable purifier.

The terms "Protecting Friend" and "Guardian" highlight Allah’s protective and caring nature. The believer is asking for Allah’s continuous protection over their soul, which is vulnerable to external and internal negative influences.

Seeking Refuge from Unproductive or Harmful Knowledge and Practices:

"O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from the knowledge which does not benefit, from the heart that does not entertain the fear (of Allah), from the soul that does not feel contented and the supplication that is not responded."

• Knowledge which does not benefit: This refers to knowledge that does not lead to practical benefit or spiritual growth. It's knowledge that may be academically interesting but does not lead to righteousness or increased closeness to Allah.
• Heart that does not entertain the fear of Allah: The heart that is not moved or humbled by the awareness of Allah's greatness and power. Taqwa, or the fear of Allah, is a central concept in Islam, guiding one to avoid sins and live a righteous life.
• Soul that does not feel contented: This refers to a soul that is restless, unsatisfied, or always seeking worldly desires without finding peace. True contentment comes from trust in Allah and being content with His decrees.
• Supplication that is not responded: The supplicant seeks protection from making prayers (du’a) that go unanswered, which may result from a lack of sincerity, the presence of impurities in the heart, or being distant from Allah.

The Wisdom Behind This Du'a:

• This supplication reflects the holistic approach Islam takes towards the individual’s well-being — both material and spiritual. The Prophet (ﷺ) emphasizes asking for protection from personal weaknesses, harmful traits, and spiritual ailments, while simultaneously seeking the purification of the heart and soul.
• The du'a also covers areas where human beings often struggle — for example, seeking refuge from ignorance (knowledge that does not benefit), seeking protection from emotional and spiritual malaise (lack of fear of Allah, contentment, and sincere supplication), and asking for Allah's guidance and protection in both the afterlife and in worldly matters.

Lessons to Learn:

• Comprehensive Self-Care: The Prophet’s (ﷺ) supplication teaches a Muslim to seek well-rounded protection, addressing both their inner spiritual state and their outer, worldly conditions. A Muslim should work not only on external actions but also on purifying their heart and soul.
• Humility and Dependence on Allah: The prayer highlights the need for humility, recognizing that only Allah can purify the soul, protect from weaknesses, and grant success in this life and the Hereafter.
• Seeking Protection from Spiritual and Physical Harm: The supplication addresses a variety of fears — from the torment of the grave to the weaknesses in one’s character or actions. It serves as a reminder that we should actively seek Allah's protection in all aspects of life.
• Value of Beneficial Knowledge and Proper Spiritual State: The prayer places great importance on seeking beneficial knowledge and having a heart full of fear and love for Allah, as well as being content with what Allah has decreed.

This du'a thus encapsulates a holistic approach to spiritual well-being, emphasizing the need for protection from harmful traits, growth through beneficial knowledge, and maintaining a close and sincere connection with Allah in all aspects of life.

What a beautifully worded supplication which is all encompassing from seeking refuge from every possible ills and invoking Allah's mercy for forgiveness. May we recite this supplication everyday so that we are protected from Satanic machinations and remain protected under the cover of our Creator, the one and only God, who has no assistants and no helpers to run this fathomless universe.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. Recommended Ruqyah for one who is Sick (Sunnah Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

Today we have selected a Sunnah of  Prophet Muhammad ﷺ of Ruqyah which he used to perform while supplicating the following prayer when visiting a sick. But before we mention the Sunnah, let us explain what Ruqyah means:

Ruqyah in Islam is the recitation of the Quran seeking the refuge in Allah, remembrance and supplications that are used as  a means of treating sicknesses  and other problems as the Quran is a source of healing. This can be done to cure evil eye, possessions of Jinn, envy and magic. The secret behind this is that one puts his full trust, reliance  and dependance in Allah, the source of all healing and cure.

The Sunnah is to do it in odd numbers. It is permissible to have it done to you without asking for it and it is also permsible to ask someone to do it for you, but this is not recommended.

The Sunnah has been reported in Sahi Bokhari 76th Book on Medicine - كتاب الطب  in 4oth Chapter: Passing right hand on the place of ailment while treating with a Ruqya (باب مَسْحِ الرَّاقِي الْوَجَعَ بِيَدِهِ الْيُمْنَ) as Hadith 5750:

حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ مُسْلِمٍ، عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ـ رضى الله عنها ـ قَالَتْ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم يُعَوِّذُ بَعْضَهُمْ يَمْسَحُهُ بِيَمِينِهِ ‏ "‏ أَذْهِبِ الْبَاسَ رَبَّ النَّاسِ، وَاشْفِ أَنْتَ الشَّافِي، لاَ شِفَاءَ إِلاَّ شِفَاؤُكَ، شِفَاءً لاَ يُغَادِرُ سَقَمًا ‏"‏‏.‏ فَذَكَرْتُهُ لِمَنْصُورٍ فَحَدَّثَنِي عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ بِنَحْوِهِ‏.‏

Narrated `Aisha: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to treat some of his wives by passing his right hand over the place of ailment and used to say, "O Lord of the people! Remove the difficulty and bring about healing as You are the Healer. There is no healing but Your Healing, a healing that will leave no ailment." 

The same Sunnah has been reported in Sahi Muslim attributed to 'A'isha who said that when Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) came to visit any sick he supplicated for him and said:

وَحَدَّثَنَاهُ أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَزُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الضُّحَى، عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم إِذَا أَتَى الْمَرِيضَ يَدْعُو لَهُ قَالَ ‏"‏ أَذْهِبِ الْبَاسَ رَبَّ النَّاسِ وَاشْفِ أَنْتَ الشَّافِي لاَ شِفَاءَ إِلاَّ شِفَاؤُكَ شِفَاءً لاَ يُغَادِرُ سَقَمًا ‏"‏ ‏.‏ وَفِي رِوَايَةِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ فَدَعَا لَهُ وَقَالَ ‏"‏ وَأَنْتَ الشَّافِي ‏"‏ ‏.‏

Lord of the people, remove the malady, cure him for Thou art a great Curer. There is no cure but through Thine healing Power which leaves no trouble.

(In the narration transmitted on the authority of Abu Bakr there is a slight variation of wording.)

The above quoted Sunnah of performing Ruqyah should be adopted with a conviction that it would ease the suffering of the one who is sick and may even remove the ailment from him.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah and Hadith of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the  Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others life miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible to make you accept it forcibly, And if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, You will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so  that they are able to discuss issues with Non Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

Visiting the Sick (Sunnah Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

A man is prone to ailments and diseases, many of which are due to one's own negligence while some befall due to some epidemic or otherwise due to seasonal changes. No matter whatever the cause, the sickness is worrisome, specially when it gets aggravated. However, we must have faith that these ailment come as a test and we must remain steadfast no matter how hard hit we may be. Remember the anecdote of Prophet Ayyub (Job, AS) who fell ill so badly that wounds and blisters spread all over his body. Yet he remained steadfast and did not complain for he knew he was being tested. And surely these ailments are means of purification, and bringing a servant of God closer to Him.

While the dear and near ones take care of the ailing person, it is incumbent upon relatives and friends to visit the patient to lift up his spirits and invigorate his energies. It has been sunnah of  Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to visit whosever fell sick in the community and make special supplication for his early recovery.

It has been narrated by Ibn `Abbas that:

حَدَّثَنَا مُعَلَّى بْنُ أَسَدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ مُخْتَارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدٌ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم دَخَلَ عَلَى أَعْرَابِيٍّ ـ يَعُودُهُ ـ قَالَ وَكَانَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم إِذَا دَخَلَ عَلَى مَرِيضٍ يَعُودُهُ قَالَ لاَ بَأْسَ طَهُورٌ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ‏.‏ فَقَالَ لَهُ ‏"‏ لاَ بَأْسَ طَهُورٌ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ ‏"‏‏.‏ قَالَ قُلْتَ طَهُورٌ كَلاَّ بَلْ هِيَ حُمَّى تَفُورُ ـ أَوْ تَثُورُ ـ عَلَى شَيْخٍ كَبِيرٍ، تُزِيرُهُ الْقُبُورَ‏.‏ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏"‏ فَنَعَمْ إِذًا ‏"‏‏.‏

The Prophet (ﷺ) paid a visit to a sick Bedouin. The Prophet (ﷺ) when visiting a patient used to say, "No harm will befall you! May Allah cure you! May Allah cure you!" So the Prophet (ﷺ) said to the Bedouin. "Do not worry, it will be purification (for you) [that is No harm will befall you.] Allah willing!" The Bedouin said, "You say, may Allah cure me? No, for it is a fever which boils in (the body of) an old man, and will lead him to the grave." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Yes, then may it be as you say."

We too should follow this Sunnah of our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and whenever we visit a patient, we must console him and reassure him that No harm will befall you. May Allah cure you!
