Allah answers and gives when making supplication using His special names (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

Allah (سبحانه و تعالى‎) has 99 attributes and each attributes carries special meaning and significance. Therefore, when making a supplication, we must choose the right attributes to move countless bounties and blessings of Allah in our favour.  Today we share a Hadith attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ wherein it is mentioned that the revered Prophet of Alah saw a man supplicating to Allah using some of His special attributes and he told his companions that the supplication of the person will be accepted for he has moved Allah's graciousness by using the correct attributes of Allah.

This Hadith is mentioned in Sunan Abi Dawud (Book # 8 Prayer (Kitab Al-Salat): Detailed Injunctions about Witr: كتاب الوتر / Chapter # 23 Regarding Supplication (Ad-Du'a) / باب الدُّعَاءِ ) as Hadith number # 1495, quoted herein under:

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ الْحَلَبِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا خَلَفُ بْنُ خَلِيفَةَ، عَنْ حَفْصٍ، - يَعْنِي ابْنَ أَخِي أَنَسٍ - عَنْ أَنَسٍ، أَنَّهُ كَانَ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم جَالِسًا وَرَجُلٌ يُصَلِّي ثُمَّ دَعَا اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ بِأَنَّ لَكَ الْحَمْدَ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ الْمَنَّانُ بَدِيعُ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالأَرْضِ يَا ذَا الْجَلاَلِ وَالإِكْرَامِ يَا حَىُّ يَا قَيُّومُ ‏.‏ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ "‏ لَقَدْ دَعَا اللَّهَ بِاسْمِهِ الْعَظِيمِ الَّذِي إِذَا دُعِيَ بِهِ أَجَابَ وَإِذَا سُئِلَ بِهِ أَعْطَى ‏"‏ ‏.‏

Narrated by Anas ibn Malik: I was sitting with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and a man was offering prayer. He then made supplication: O Allah, I ask Thee by virtue of the fact that praise is due to Thee, there is no deity but Thou, Who showest favour and beneficence, the Originator of the Heavens and the earth, O Lord of Majesty and Splendour, O Living One, O Eternal One.

The Prophet (ﷺ) then said: He has supplicated Allah using His Greatest Name, when supplicated by this name, He answers, and when asked by this name He gives.

Grade: Sahih (Al-Albani)  صحيح  (الألباني)

The same Hadith is mentioned in Jami` at-Tirmidhi » Chapters on Supplication - كتاب الدعوات عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم » Hadith 3544, with slight variation.

Since Prophet Muhammad ﷺ specially mentioned that by using the names mentioned in the supplication, Allah answers and gives, we too must remember this supplication by heart and whenever making a supplication, we must recite the above quoted Dua / invocation so as to receive attention of Allah and get blessed.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Prophetic Supplication Seeking Refuge from a Bad End and Misery

Evil is around us all the time and is always on the lookout to find a weaker soul to entice it into his evilness and make him succumb to sin and worldly desires. Sometimes the enticement of evil is so strong that even men with strong beliefs get disarrayed, though they hurriedly repent and seek Divine forgiveness as early as possible. 

Likewise, the dangerous animals and insects and crawlers too are one of the forms of evil. These overpower us or sting us to cause us harm and pain. But if we constantly supplicate prophetic supplications, attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, we are most like to protect us from the evil spell and its forces in the form of deadly animals and crawlers.

This prophetic supplication is quoted in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: Book (#48) Pertaining to the Remembrance of Allah, Supplication, Repentance and Seeking Forgiveness - كتاب  الذكر والدعاء والتوبة والاستغفار   / Chapter # 16 Seeking Refuge from a Bad End, And Misery Etc / (11)باب  فِي التَّعَوُّذِ مِنْ سُوءِ الْقَضَاءِ وَدَرَكِ الشَّقَاءِ وَغَيْرِهِ‏‏‏) as Hadith number # 2708 b / 2709 a as under:

وَحَدَّثَنَا هَارُونُ بْنُ مَعْرُوفٍ، وَأَبُو الطَّاهِرِ، كِلاَهُمَا عَنِ ابْنِ وَهْبٍ، - وَاللَّفْظُ لِهَارُونَ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ وَهْبٍ، قَالَ وَأَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرٌو، - وَهُوَ ابْنُ الْحَارِثِ - أَنَّ يَزِيدَ بْنَ أَبِي، حَبِيبٍ وَالْحَارِثَ بْنَ يَعْقُوبَ حَدَّثَاهُ عَنْ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الأَشَجِّ، عَنْ بُسْرِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ، عَنْ خَوْلَةَ بِنْتِ حَكِيمٍ السُّلَمِيَّةِ، أَنَّهَا سَمِعَتْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ ‏"‏ إِذَا نَزَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ مَنْزِلاً فَلْيَقُلْ أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ ‏.‏ فَإِنَّهُ لاَ يَضُرُّهُ شَىْءٌ حَتَّى يَرْتَحِلَ مِنْهُ ‏"‏ ‏.

قَالَ يَعْقُوبُ وَقَالَ الْقَعْقَاعُ بْنُ حَكِيمٍ عَنْ ذَكْوَانَ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا لَقِيتُ مِنْ عَقْرَبٍ لَدَغَتْنِي الْبَارِحَةَ قَالَ ‏"‏ أَمَا لَوْ قُلْتَ حِينَ أَمْسَيْتَ أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ لَمْ تَضُرُّكَ ‏"‏‏.‏

Khaula bint Hakim Sulamiyya reported: I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: When any one of you stays at a place, he should say:" I seek refuge in the Perfect Word of Allah from the evil of that He created." Nothing would then do him any harm until he moves from that place. 

Abu Huraira reported that a person came to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and said:" Allah's Messenger, I was stung by a scorpion during the night. Thereupon he said: Had you recited these words in the evening:" I seek refuge in the Perfect Word of Allah from the evil of what He created," it would not have done any harm to you.

As can be seen from the two portions of the Hadith of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, there is a need to supplicate and ask protection of Allah from evil when going to a new place or to avert the danger of evil agents in the form of animals, reptiles and crawlers. Remember the supplication: 

أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ

and recite it much too often to continuously seek refuge of Allah from evil and be safe always.

This supplication is meant to be recited when a person stays in a place, seeking Allah's protection from the potential harms that may arise from the evil of His creation. The hadith emphasizes that if this supplication is recited, the person will be protected from harm while in that place.

Key Elements of the Hadith:

• Seeking Refuge in Allah’s Words: The "Perfect Word of Allah" refers to the divine words of Allah, which are flawless, comprehensive, and powerful. It could be understood to refer to the Qur'an or the names and attributes of Allah, or even to Allah's will and decree. By seeking refuge in Allah's words, the person is invoking His protection from harm.
• Protection from the Evil of Allah’s Creation: This part of the supplication acknowledges the reality that harm or evil can come from the creatures and forces that Allah has created, including things like harmful creatures, jinn, sicknesses, and negative influences. By invoking Allah’s protection, the believer asks to be shielded from such harms.
• Effect of the Supplication: The Prophet (ﷺ) assures that if this supplication is recited, nothing will harm the person until they move from that place. This indicates the effectiveness and power of the prayer, providing a spiritual shield that protects the individual from any negative influences while they are in that specific location.

Practical Application:

This hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to seek Allah's protection regularly, especially when they are in unfamiliar or potentially dangerous situations, or when they enter new places. Reciting such supplications strengthens one’s faith and trust in Allah's power and mercy.

The Wisdom Behind This Hadith:

It encourages mindfulness of Allah and recognition that, while humans may take physical precautions, it is ultimately Allah’s protection that ensures safety from all harm, whether physical or spiritual. It also highlights the importance of using the words of Allah as a means of protection, reinforcing the central role of divine guidance and supplication in a Muslim’s life.

In essence, this hadith serves to cultivate a sense of spiritual awareness, guiding Muslims to seek refuge in Allah whenever they feel vulnerable or exposed to any form of harm.

we should also teach this supplication to our children and encourage them to recite it much too often, especially if they feel an urge to commit a sin or a wrongdoing, or if they feel they are being led to something evil or falling prey to a deadly being.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. Prophetic Prayer While in Prostration (Sunnah Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

As Salat / Prayer is a one-to-one means of communication between a servant and his Lord. It is the time when a servant must invoke many blessings of his Lord and seek forgiveness for his past sins and misdeeds. Although prophets of God are above sins or misdeed for which they should be sorry for and seek forgiveness of their Lord, yet they would still supplicate for maybe they could have hurt someone unknowingly or said something that could have meant something different what actually means and could annoy someone.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ always supplicated for his blessing and blessing of the entire Ummah, whether alone or in company so that others too learn these supplications and often recite these for their forgiveness. The Hadith being shared today covers the same theme as mentioned in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (Book # 4 The book of prayers كتاب الإيمان / Chapter (What Is to Be Said While Bowing and Prostrating)) as Hadith number # 1084:

وَحَدَّثَنِى أَبُو الطَّاهِرِ وَيُونُسُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الأَعْلَى قَالاَ أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ أَخْبَرَنِى يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ عَنْ عُمَارَةَ بْنِ غَزِيَّةَ عَنْ سُمَىٍّ مَوْلَى أَبِى بَكْرٍ عَنْ أَبِى صَالِحٍ عَنْ أَبِى هُرَيْرَةَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- كَانَ يَقُولُ فِى سُجُودِهِ « اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِى ذَنْبِى كُلَّهُ دِقَّهُ وَجِلَّهُ وَأَوَّلَهُ وَآخِرَهُ وَعَلاَنِيَتَهُ وَسِرَّهُ ».

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that when he prostrated, the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) used to say: "Allahummaghfirli dhanbi kullahu diqqahu wa jillahu, wa awwalahu wa akhirahu, wa 'alaniyatahu wa sirrahu (O Allah, forgive me all my sins, great and small, first and last, open and secret.)"

A simple yet very well-meaning prayer which covers all kinds of sins one may have committed in his life. We may remember this supplication by heart and may recite while prostrating or even otherwise to be saved of the punishment of our committed sins.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. Prophetic Supplication to seek refuge from helplessness and being overpowered unjustly

It has been narrated by Anas bin Malik that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ oftenly used to recite the following supplication: 

 اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْهَمِّ وَالْحَزَنِ، وَالْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ، وَالْبُخْلِ وَالْجُبْنِ وَضَلَعِ الدَّيْنِ، وَغَلَبَةِ الرِّجَالِ ‏

"O Allah! I seek refuge with You from, having worries sadness, helplessness, laziness, miserliness, cowardice, from being heavily in debt and from being overpowered by other persons unjustly."

The wording of the supplication shows that this supplication was made by the revered Prophet of Allah when under stress or duress or when fearing being overpowered by his enemies. We should also make this supplication much too often and invoke countless mercies of Allah to be our Guardian and Protector when dark clouds tend to overshadow us.

Note: This is the selected portion of Hadith number 5425 taken from Sahih al-Bukhari Book number 70 on Food, Meals - كتاب الأطعمة » / Chapter number 28: Al-Hais "باب الْحَيْسِ" (dish prepared from dried yoghourt, butter and dates). Complete hadith may be read from here which also makes a mention of preparation of meal Al Hais which was one of the favourites of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Prophetic Supplication for Protection against Poverty and from being Wronged

In a series of Prophetic Supplications attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, we share today a special supplication which the revered Prophet ﷺ would often recite to avert poverty and from being wronged.  These supplications have in fact been given to us as a well-set format so that we know the supplication and what for.

The supplication is mentioned in Sunan Abu Dawud Book number 8 (Prayer (Kitab Al-Salat): Detailed Injunctions about Witr - كتاب الوتر) Chapter number 518 (Regarding Seeking Refuge - باب فِي الاِسْتِعَاذَةِ) as Hadith number 1544:

حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ، أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ يَقُولُ ‏ "‏ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْفَقْرِ وَالْقِلَّةِ وَالذِّلَّةِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ أَنْ أَظْلِمَ أَوْ أُظْلَمَ ‏"‏‏.‏

Narrated by Abu Hurayrah: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to say: "O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from poverty", lack and abasement, and I seek refuge in Thee lest I cause or suffer wrong."

In just one sentence, a very comprehensive supplication helps us to supplicate for protection against poverty, something that man is always afraid of for poverty leads to many ills in the society and man succumbs to evil forces in doing wrong to earn more. Likewise, man is also afraid of being debased, especially when one is poor and is likely to be wronged. May Allah help us and provide us means of sustenance enough to block any opportunity by evil forces to takes towards wrong.

We have not been made responsible to make you accept it forcibly, And if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, You will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Prophetic Supplication for Seeking Refuge from Withdrawal of Allah’s Protection

The shadow of evil forces is always looming over us and we are liable to succumb to these evil pressures at some point in the time of our lives. When a sin or a wrongdoing has been committed, man is always remorseful and guilty. In such times of depression, none but mercy of Allah is to be invoked for repentance and forgiveness. 

Those who do not seek Allah's mercy despite committing sins and falling into the lap and trap of the evil forces, are one day deprived of Allah's protection and may be subjected to the Divine wrath which is extremely painful. This torment of Allah then continues not only in this world but in the life in the Hereafter as well.

The Hadith selected today is for seeking refuge from withdrawal of Allah's protection and His wrath from falling on to us. 'Abdullah b. Umar reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) supplicated in these words:

حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْكَرِيمِ أَبُو زُرْعَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ بُكَيْرٍ، حَدَّثَنِي يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ، عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ عُقْبَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ كَانَ مِنْ دُعَاءِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم: ‏ 

‏ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ زَوَالِ نِعْمَتِكَ وَتَحَوُّلِ عَافِيَتِكَ وَفُجَاءَةِ نِقْمَتِكَ وَجَمِيعِ سَخَطِكَ ‏‏

 " O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from the withdrawal of Thine blessing and the change of Thine protection (from me) and from the sudden wrath of Thine, and from every displeasure of Thine."

Let us never depart from the Straight Path, Siraat e Mustaqeem, and let us not fall in the trap of evil forces for which we later have to be ashamed of ourselves. And supplicate as much as possible for protection and forgiveness so as to remain blessed and safe.

Prophetic Supplication for Good Health and Protection from Torment of Grave

Good health is perhaps the greatest blessing of Allah for His servants. One can survive with less wealth, but without good health life becomes an awful misery and which one can simply ill afford. That is why we always seek forgiveness from Allah and supplicate for good health. 

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ too always supplicated for good health and asked Allah from protection from the torment of grave for the revered Prophet was aware of the misery one comes across in ill health and the torment of grave which is though obscured from us, yet is a reality and no matter how pious we may be, yet any single mistake can make us target from the torment of grave.

We share today a hadith as mentioned in Sunan Abi Dawud as hadith number 5090 in which Abdur Rahman ibn Abu Bakrah has attributed the following supplication as heard by his revered father Abu Bakrah from Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

حَدَّثَنَا الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَظِيمِ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْجَلِيلِ بْنِ عَطِيَّةَ، عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مَيْمُونٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ لأَبِيهِ يَا أَبَةِ إِنِّي أَسْمَعُكَ تَدْعُو كُلَّ غَدَاةٍ اللَّهُمَّ عَافِنِي فِي بَدَنِي اللَّهُمَّ عَافِنِي فِي سَمْعِي اللَّهُمَّ عَافِنِي فِي بَصَرِي لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ تُعِيدُهَا ثَلاَثًا حِينَ تُصْبِحُ وَثَلاَثًا حِينَ تُمْسِي ‏.‏ فَقَالَ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَدْعُو بِهِنَّ فَأَنَا أُحِبُّ أَنْ أَسْتَنَّ بِسُنَّتِهِ ‏.‏ قَالَ عَبَّاسٌ فِيهِ وَتَقُولُ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْكُفْرِ وَالْفَقْرِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ تُعِيدُهَا ثَلاَثًا حِينَ تُصْبِحُ وَثَلاَثًا حِينَ تُمْسِي فَتَدْعُو بِهِنَّ فَأُحِبُّ أَنْ أَسْتَنَّ بِسُنَّتِهِ قَالَ وَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ "‏ دَعَوَاتُ الْمَكْرُوبِ اللَّهُمَّ رَحْمَتَكَ أَرْجُو فَلاَ تَكِلْنِي إِلَى نَفْسِي طَرْفَةَ عَيْنٍ وَأَصْلِحْ لِي شَأْنِي كُلَّهُ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ وَبَعْضُهُمْ يَزِيدُ عَلَى صَاحِبِهِ ‏.‏

Translation 

Narrated Abu Bakrah:  Abdur Rahman ibn Abu Bakrah said that he told his father: O my father! I hear you supplicating every morning: "O Allah! Grant me health in my body. O Allah! Grant me good hearing. O Allah! Grant me good eyesight. There is no god but Thou." You repeat them three times in the morning and three times in the evening.

He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) using these words as a supplication and I like to follow his practice.

The transmitter, Abbas, said in this version: And you say: "O Allah! I seek refuge in Thee from infidelity and poverty. O Allah! I seek refuge in Thee from punishment in the grave. There is no god but Thee". You repeat them three times in the morning and three times in the evening, and use them as a supplication. I like to follow his practice.

He said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: The supplications to be used by one who is distressed are: "O Allah! Thy mercy is what I hope for. Do not abandon me to myself for an instant, but put all my affairs in good order for me. There is no god but Thou." Some transmitters added more than others.

Prophetic Supplication to Seek Refuge from All ills (Sunnah Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

The life of prophets has never been easy. On one end, they were busy spreading the words of God and motivating them to come under the fold of Godly cover. And on the other hand, teaching prayers and supplications by giving them very well worded supplications so that the believers could not find them at loss of proper words while making a supplication to invoke the countless mercies of their Creator.

We have been sharing such supplications as Prophet Muhammad ﷺ supplicated so that others could remember and follow. Herein under we share a Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as mentioned in Sahi Muslim Book (Number 48) Pertaining to the Remembrance of Allah, Supplication, Repentance and Seeking Forgiveness ( كتاب الذكر والدعاء والتوبة والاستغفار ) in 18th Chapter: Supplications [of the Prophet (SAW)]

Zaid bin Alqam has been reported as saying (Hadith 2722):

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَإِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ نُمَيْرٍ، - وَاللَّفْظُ لاِبْنِ نُمَيْرٍ - قَالَ إِسْحَاقُ أَخْبَرَنَا وَقَالَ الآَخَرَانِ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ، وَعَنْ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ النَّهْدِيِّ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَرْقَمَ، قَالَ لاَ أَقُولُ لَكُمْ إِلاَّ كَمَا كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ كَانَ يَقُولُ ‏ "‏ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ وَالْجُبْنِ وَالْبُخْلِ وَالْهَرَمِ وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ اللَّهُمَّ آتِ نَفْسِي تَقْوَاهَا وَزَكِّهَا أَنْتَ خَيْرُ مَنْ زَكَّاهَا أَنْتَ وَلِيُّهَا وَمَوْلاَهَا اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عِلْمٍ لاَ يَنْفَعُ وَمِنْ قَلْبٍ لاَ يَخْشَعُ 

وَمِنْ نَفْسٍ لاَ تَشْبَعُ وَمِنْ دَعْوَةٍ لاَ يُسْتَجَابُ لَهَا ‏"‏ ‏

Translation:

Zaid b. Alqam reported: I am not going to say anything but only that which Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) used to say. He used to supplicate:" O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from incapacity, from sloth, from cowardice, from miserliness, decrepitude and from torment of the grave. O Allah, grant to my soul the sense of righteousness and purify it, for Thou art the Best Purifier thereof. Thou art the Protecting Friend thereof, and Guardian thereof. O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from the knowledge which does not benefit, from the heart that does not entertain the fear (of Allah), from the soul that does not feel contented and the supplication that is not responded."

The supplication in this hadith is quite comprehensive, covering various aspects of a person’s well-being, both spiritually and in terms of character. Let’s break it down to understand the meanings behind each of the phrases.

The Supplication:

Seeking Refuge from Negative Traits and Weaknesses: "O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from incapacity, from sloth, from cowardice, from miserliness, decrepitude and from the torment of the grave."

• Incapacity: Asking for protection from being unable to do good deeds, fulfill responsibilities, or achieve what is beneficial.
• Sloth: Seeking refuge from laziness or a lack of motivation, which could prevent a person from performing acts of worship and fulfilling their duties.
• Cowardice: Asking for protection from being afraid or lacking the courage to stand up for what is right or to protect one’s faith in times of trial.
• Miserliness: Seeking refuge from being stingy, hoarding wealth, or being unwilling to help others when needed.
• Decrepitude: Asking for protection from old age that weakens a person’s physical and mental capacities, preventing them from being able to serve Allah and others effectively.
• Torment of the Grave: Seeking refuge from the punishment that one might face in the grave due to bad deeds or neglect of one’s duties in life.

Seeking Allah’s Help for the Purification of the Soul:

"O Allah, grant to my soul the sense of righteousness and purify it, for Thou art the Best Purifier thereof. Thou art the Protecting Friend thereof, and Guardian thereof."

The supplicant is asking Allah to grant their soul the ability to do what is right (righteousness) and to purify it from corruption, sin, and negative traits.

Purification of the soul is a central theme in Islamic spirituality. It refers to cleansing the heart and soul from pride, greed, envy, and other spiritual illnesses. Allah is acknowledged as the best and most capable purifier.

The terms "Protecting Friend" and "Guardian" highlight Allah’s protective and caring nature. The believer is asking for Allah’s continuous protection over their soul, which is vulnerable to external and internal negative influences.

Seeking Refuge from Unproductive or Harmful Knowledge and Practices:

"O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from the knowledge which does not benefit, from the heart that does not entertain the fear (of Allah), from the soul that does not feel contented and the supplication that is not responded."

• Knowledge which does not benefit: This refers to knowledge that does not lead to practical benefit or spiritual growth. It's knowledge that may be academically interesting but does not lead to righteousness or increased closeness to Allah.
• Heart that does not entertain the fear of Allah: The heart that is not moved or humbled by the awareness of Allah's greatness and power. Taqwa, or the fear of Allah, is a central concept in Islam, guiding one to avoid sins and live a righteous life.
• Soul that does not feel contented: This refers to a soul that is restless, unsatisfied, or always seeking worldly desires without finding peace. True contentment comes from trust in Allah and being content with His decrees.
• Supplication that is not responded: The supplicant seeks protection from making prayers (du’a) that go unanswered, which may result from a lack of sincerity, the presence of impurities in the heart, or being distant from Allah.

The Wisdom Behind This Du'a:

• This supplication reflects the holistic approach Islam takes towards the individual’s well-being — both material and spiritual. The Prophet (ﷺ) emphasizes asking for protection from personal weaknesses, harmful traits, and spiritual ailments, while simultaneously seeking the purification of the heart and soul.
• The du'a also covers areas where human beings often struggle — for example, seeking refuge from ignorance (knowledge that does not benefit), seeking protection from emotional and spiritual malaise (lack of fear of Allah, contentment, and sincere supplication), and asking for Allah's guidance and protection in both the afterlife and in worldly matters.

Lessons to Learn:

• Comprehensive Self-Care: The Prophet’s (ﷺ) supplication teaches a Muslim to seek well-rounded protection, addressing both their inner spiritual state and their outer, worldly conditions. A Muslim should work not only on external actions but also on purifying their heart and soul.
• Humility and Dependence on Allah: The prayer highlights the need for humility, recognizing that only Allah can purify the soul, protect from weaknesses, and grant success in this life and the Hereafter.
• Seeking Protection from Spiritual and Physical Harm: The supplication addresses a variety of fears — from the torment of the grave to the weaknesses in one’s character or actions. It serves as a reminder that we should actively seek Allah's protection in all aspects of life.
• Value of Beneficial Knowledge and Proper Spiritual State: The prayer places great importance on seeking beneficial knowledge and having a heart full of fear and love for Allah, as well as being content with what Allah has decreed.

This du'a thus encapsulates a holistic approach to spiritual well-being, emphasizing the need for protection from harmful traits, growth through beneficial knowledge, and maintaining a close and sincere connection with Allah in all aspects of life.

What a beautifully worded supplication which is all encompassing from seeking refuge from every possible ills and invoking Allah's mercy for forgiveness. May we recite this supplication everyday so that we are protected from Satanic machinations and remain protected under the cover of our Creator, the one and only God, who has no assistants and no helpers to run this fathomless universe.

Prophetic Supplication for Seeking Protection ( Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ )

Man is always vulnerable to jealous eyes and tyranny of the demagogues. Even prophets have felt endangered when facing group of people hostile to them and always meaning harm. Under such trying conditions Prophet Muhammad ﷺ  has been quoted to supplicate for protection.

It has been narrated by AbuMusa al-Ash'ari: 

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، أَنَّ أَبَاهُ، حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ إِذَا خَافَ قَوْمًا قَالَ ‏ "‏ اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَجْعَلُكَ فِي نُحُورِهِمْ وَنَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شُرُورِهِمْ ‏"‏ ‏.‏

When the Prophet (ﷺ) feared a (group of) people, he would say: "O Allah, we make Thee our shield against them, and take refuge in Thee from their evils."

Grade: Sahih (Al-Albani)

We too must recite this supplication when we feel threatened by anyone or a group of hostile people who mean harm to us so that Allah provides us a shield against them and ease our fear.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the  Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others life miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible to make you accept it forcibly, And if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, You will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so  that they are able to discuss issues with Non Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

Note: When we mention God in our posts, we mean One True God, we call Allah in Islam, with no associates. Allah is the Sole Creator of all things, and that Allah is all-powerful and all-knowing. Allah has no offspring, no race, no gender, no body, and is unaffected by the characteristics of human life.

Don't be dejected if your Dua / Supplication is not answered - Know how Dua works

The desires, problems and sufferings of man are endless. One may desire things which others have and he doesn't and makes a supplication to Allah for fulfillment of his desires. But when this supplication is not answered, he get dejected for he thinks that there has been something wrong which may have done in the past because of which his dua is not answered or he perhaps did not make a invocation as it should  have been.

Likewise, if someone is poor or sick or in some turmoil, he besieges Allah to end his sufferings. Again here all duas and supplications may not get answered. Sometimes one's lifetime passes away in utter poverty or illness and despite all his supplications, his situation remains unchanged. Naturally a man has a limited knowledge and he cannot fathom the realities unknown to him, so he loses heart in praying and get into depression.

Then there is a person who when sees someone in despair or bad times, he supplicates that he may not get into such a situation ever. Yet despite his dua, he finds him in the same sufferings and bad times for which he made a supplication to be saved off.

So what in fact is the philosophy behind acceptance or negation of our supplications?

This all happens because man is impatient and he wants that his supplications should be immediately answered. If we look back, even the  prophets have undergone test and trials, like Prophet Yaqoob wept for years for the loss of his son Yusuf or when Prophet Noah saw his son drowning he made a dua for his safety but it was not granted. Prophet Abraham (Ibraheem) prayed for his father but was asked not to for he was an infidel.

Or the example of Maryam (Mary) when she was told that she would bear a child, which came as a shock to her and she prayed that she would rather die than bearing a child when she had been chaste all along. But against her wishes and dua, a son was born to her who rose to be a prophet (Eesa/Jesus).

So all above shows that man does not know what is good or bad for him and his wishes and supplications may or may not be answered for Allah has His own plans.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is reported to have said,

"Make du'a to God in a state that you are certain that your du'a will be responded to, and know that God does not respond to a du'a that originates from a negligent, inattentive heart" — Hadith narrated by al-Tirmidhi and al-Hakim from Abu-Hurayrah

There are many factors that may lead to acceptance of one's supplications. These are:

• Faith: Nothing moves without an unflinching faith in Allah. Unless one has firm and solid faith, how can he expect his supplications be answered?
• Patiance: Allah rejects supplications if the worshipper is hasty or does not have patience.
• Purity: One must have a pure and clean heart to make a dua. A person who is sinful or has haraam income and food may not qualify for acceptance of his duas.
• Good intentions: One has to make a dua with good intention for a good cause. A person's Dua will continue to be answered so long as he does not pray for something sinful or for the breaking of family ties, for a person's Dua will continue to be answered so long as he does not pray for something sinful or for the breaking of family ties." Narrated by Muslim.
• Unconditional Dua: One should never place conditions to the acceptance of his dua. Propeht Muhammad ﷺ is reported to have said: "Let not any one of you say, 'O Allah, forgive me if You will, O Allah, have mercy on me if You will.' Let him be resolute in the matter, whilst knowing that no one can compel Allah to do anything." — Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim
