Beware of a Day when there will be no barter exchange of sins with worldly wealth

The wrong doers, sinner, denier of prophets and messengers of Allah and the day the justice scales to be established on the Day of the Judgement generally seem oblivious of the Divine promise of a day when justice will be established and no one shall be wronged. And on that day, such deniers of Divine Commandments will realize how grossly misled they were and how they ruled the world using their wealth and mocked the messengers sent to them for their benefit.

The 54th verse of Surah 10 Yunus (Prophet Jonah, peace be upon him) carries a stern warning fo rall wrong doers, sinners and tyrants

وَلَوۡ اَنَّ لِكُلِّ نَفۡسٍ ظَلَمَتۡ مَا فِى الۡاَرۡضِ لَافۡتَدَتۡ بِهٖ​ؕ وَاَسَرُّوا النَّدَامَةَ لَمَّا رَاَوُا الۡعَذَابَ​ۚ وَقُضِىَ بَيۡنَهُمۡ بِالۡقِسۡطِ​ وَهُمۡ لَا يُظۡلَمُوۡنَ‏ 
(10:54) If a wrong-doer had all that is in the earth he would surely offer it to ransom himself. When the wrong-doers perceive the chastisement, they will feel intense remorse in their hearts. But a judgement shall be made with full justice about them. They shall not be wronged.

“And they will feel remorse”. When all of a sudden, they face the torment on the Day, which they had denied throughout their lives, and on that presumption had gone on doing wrong deeds. Not only this: they will also feel very sorry that they had denied the Messengers and brought baseless charges against them, who had warned them of it. Therefore when they witness it against all their expectations, they will find the ground slipping from under their feet and will feel utterly helpless and guilty in their minds because of the remembrance of their wrong doings and of the pricking of their conscience. In short, their condition will be that of a gambler, who turns a deaf ear to the counsel of his well wishers and stakes his all on mere speculation and goes bankrupt. But such a person has to blame none but himself only for his sad plight.

Let us further expand the meaning of the above quoted verses and its relevance for us:
  • Desperation of the Wrongdoer: The verse begins by depicting how those who committed wrong (sins, disobedience to Allah, injustice to others) will, on the Day of Judgment, realize the enormity of their sins. If they possessed everything on earth—wealth, power, or any material resources—they would try to offer it as a ransom to escape the punishment. However, nothing in this world will be sufficient to save them once they face Allah's judgment.
  • Intense Regret and Remorse: When the wrongdoers finally witness the reality of the punishment awaiting them, they will experience intense regret (Arabic: أسروا النَّدامة), which they will internalize. This remorse comes from their realization that they wasted their opportunities in life by rejecting the truth and committing sins. At this point, their regret will be of no benefit because the time for repentance and doing good deeds has passed.
  • Judgment with Full Justice: Despite their remorse, justice will be served. The verse emphasizes that Allah will judge the wrongdoers with absolute fairness. The judgment will be based on their deeds, and no one will be treated unfairly. Allah is All-Knowing and Just, so everyone will be recompensed precisely according to what they deserve.
  • No Injustice Will Be Done: The verse closes by reassuring that “they will not be wronged” (وَهُمْ لَا يُظْلَمُونَ). This highlights Allah's perfect justice—no one will be treated unfairly, and no soul will bear the burden of another. Each person will face the consequences of their own actions.
Broader Themes and Lessons from the Verse
  • The Futility of Material Wealth: The verse shows that, in the Hereafter, all the wealth and material possessions of this world will be meaningless. The wrongdoer’s attempt to offer the entire world in exchange for freedom from punishment reflects the futility of materialism when facing Allah's judgment. Only righteous deeds, faith, and submission to Allah will matter on that day.
  • The Importance of Repentance and Good Deeds: This verse serves as a warning to act now while there is still time. Wrongdoers will wish they had acted righteously, but once the Day of Judgment comes, regret will no longer benefit them. This underscores the importance of repentance (tawbah) and performing good deeds while alive.
  • Divine Justice: The verse also emphasizes that Allah’s judgment will be completely just. No one will be punished unjustly or more than what they deserve. Similarly, no one will be deprived of any good they have done. Every deed, whether good or bad, will be accounted for.
Supporting Hadith
The idea of regret in the Hereafter and the futility of material possessions is echoed in several hadiths:
  • Hadith on Regret in the Hereafter: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
"The people of Hell will be made to feel remorse and regret, and they will say, 'Send us back so we can do good deeds, not the evil that we used to do.' But it will be said to them: 'No, it is just a word that they say, and in front of them is a barrier until the Day they are resurrected.'" (Surah Al-Mu’minun, 23:99-100; Sahih Muslim)

This hadith mirrors the concept of intense regret felt by the wrongdoers, as described in the verse. After death, the chance for redemption is lost, and all they can do is regret the missed opportunities to do good.
  • Hadith on the Value of Righteous Deeds: The Prophet (peace be upon him) warned about focusing too much on the material world and neglecting one’s obligations to Allah. He said:
“Take advantage of five before five: your youth before your old age, your health before your sickness, your wealth before your poverty, your free time before your preoccupation, and your life before your death.” (Sunan al-Tirmidhi, 2417)

This hadith encourages believers to use their wealth, health, and time wisely for the sake of good deeds, as these are fleeting and will not be available after death.

Broader Implications in Today’s World
  • Avoiding Materialism: In today’s world, people often pursue wealth and status at the expense of their spiritual well-being. This verse serves as a reminder that material possessions cannot save a person in the Hereafter. What truly matters are good deeds and faith in Allah.
  • Being Mindful of Justice: The verse also reinforces the concept of justice. In a world where injustice is often prevalent, it reminds us that Allah’s justice is absolute and that all wrongdoers will be held accountable. Therefore, believers should strive to uphold justice in their own lives and actions.
  • Urgency of Good Deeds: The message of the verse is to take advantage of the time given in this life to perform good deeds, repent for mistakes, and follow Allah’s commands. Procrastination in matters of faith and good deeds can lead to regret when it is too late.
In the light of explanation above, Surah Yunus, verse 54, offers a stark reminder of the Day of Judgment and the regret that wrongdoers will feel when they face Allah’s punishment. Their desperate attempts to ransom themselves with the wealth of the world will be in vain, as the time for repentance and good deeds will have passed. The verse emphasizes the futility of materialism in the Hereafter and highlights the need for repentance and righteous actions in this life. Furthermore, it reassures that Allah's judgment is perfectly just, and no one will be wronged in the least.

Remember, the above quoted verse takes us deep into the time when people are made to account for their deeds and their fate is determined. But such a ransom will not be accepted, even should it be offered. But before the verse is concluded, we see that what was supposed has come to pass and the whole matter is done and finished with. It has all come as a great surprise which leaves them powerless. The image here is one of gloomy faces, full of sadness, their lips unable to utter a word. 

Time is now to shun any thoughts of being superior to others and harming the weak and meek for self interests and thinking that since we have been blessed so much, we are among the blessed and we will continue to be placed at a higher pedestal even on the Day of Judgement. Or being satisfied that even if we were to be penalized on that day, we could barter trade our sins with what we owned in the world and get a free ticket to Heavens. Beware of such foolish thoughts for justice of Allah cannot be bought with money but with good deeds and by living a worldly life as prescribed for us in Qur'an.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎)  help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 
وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

How does Islam view the deceitful leadership and their blind followers

The demagogues have always ruled people throughout the written history. Their cruelty, deceit and tacit machination has always deceived their people and while they firmly ruled over them, a large segment of the people supported them to be in good books and to earn political and social gains - even means of sustenance at the cost of their freedom. While the deceitful leadership, many quoted in history like for instance the Pharaoh, will be held accountable for their tyranny, the silent majority who supported such despots and demagogues will also be held responsible for remaining silent and letting the tyranny continue. 

Allah warns both such rulers and their blind followers of utter disobedience to Him. This has been said explicitly in the 54th verse of Surah Az-Zukhruf. Although, the warning is about the conduct of Pharaoh towards his people, it also serves as a warning against manipulation and blind following of leaders who mislead their communities. The verse reads:

فَاسۡتَخَفَّ قَوۡمَهٗ فَاَطَاعُوۡهُ​ؕ اِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوۡا قَوۡمًا فٰسِقِيۡنَ‏  
(43:54) He incited his people to levity and they obeyed him. Surely they were an iniquitous (grossly unfair and morally wrong) people.

This verse highlights how Pharaoh misled his people through deception and arrogance, exploiting their ignorance and disobedience to Allah. Despite witnessing clear signs of truth, Pharaoh’s people continued to follow him blindly because he appealed to their desires, fears, and misplaced loyalty. However, in its meaning, this is applicable to all tyrants and their blind followers throughout the history, EVEN NOW!!

Supporting Hadith and Teachings
The message of this verse is supported by various hadiths that warn against blindly following misguided leaders and emphasize the importance of seeking the truth.
  • Hadith on Leadership and Accountability: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) warned against following unjust rulers blindly and stressed the responsibility of each individual to adhere to what is right:
“There will be rulers after me who will tell lies and oppress. Whoever affirms their lies and supports them in their oppression does not belong to me, nor do I belong to him, and he will not come to me at the Hawd (Pool of Kauthar).” (Sunan al-Tirmidhi, 2259)

This hadith underscores the importance of rejecting falsehood and injustice, even when it comes from those in authority, aligning with the message of the verse about the dangers of being misled by tyrants like Pharaoh.
  • Hadith on Blind Following: The Prophet also spoke about the consequences of blindly following leaders without questioning their actions:
“There is no obedience to any created being if it involves disobedience to the Creator.” (Musnad Ahmad, 1098)

This hadith reinforces the principle that one must not follow a leader in actions that contradict the commands of Allah, as blind obedience can lead to straying from the path of truth, just as Pharaoh’s people were misled.

Lessons from the referred Verse and Hadith
  • The Danger of Manipulative Leaders: Both the verse and supporting hadiths highlight the danger of leaders who manipulate their followers for personal gain or power. Such leaders often use deception, false promises, and fear to control people, steering them away from truth and justice.
  • Critical Thinking and Seeking Truth: Islam encourages critical thinking and seeking knowledge to discern right from wrong. Blind obedience, especially in matters of faith, is discouraged because it can lead to being misled, as seen in the example of Pharaoh’s people.
  • Individual Responsibility: Each person is responsible for their actions and beliefs. Even when under the influence of persuasive leaders, individuals must seek the truth and adhere to divine guidance, rather than blindly following authority.
  • Avoiding the Path of Rebelliousness: The verse and hadiths call for self-reflection to avoid the rebelliousness that Pharaoh’s people exhibited. Obedience to Allah and adherence to His guidance is essential to prevent falling into the traps of misleading leaders.
Surah Az-Zukhruf, verse 54, serves as a timeless warning against the dangers of deceitful leadership and blind obedience. It emphasizes the importance of seeking truth, rejecting falsehood, and maintaining personal accountability in matters of faith and morality. The verse, supported by hadiths, reminds Muslims to remain vigilant, question unjust authority, and stay true to Allah’s guidance to avoid the fate of those who followed Pharaoh into destruction.

Let us not be deceived by the gimmicks of our leaders and raise slogans in their favour, for if we do that we will draw disobedience of Allah and held responsible to the crime of supporting the tyrants.

Blindness to Truth in this world will lead to Utter Blindness in the Hereafter (Selected verses from Qur'an)

The virtue to see is one of the greatest blessings of Allah. One just need to ponder over the life of the blind who live in a state of total darkness all along their lives, tumbling over obstructions and unsure of where they are going. But there is a category of people who despite being blessed with the ability to see are still blind - blind to the truth, and despite knowing the truth, follow the path that leads them to misfortunes and places that are abound by evil.

While the total blind cannot see, yet the windows to spirituality and their hearts are always wide open. And despite not seeing anything, they are enlightened spiritually and see the unseen through their hearts. But those who see the signs of truth remain oblivious of their presence and lead a derailed life, far away from the truth.

The 72nd verse of Surah Al-Isra (also known as Surah Bani Isra'il) of Quran is an important verse that speaks about spiritual blindness and guidance. It serves as a reminder of the importance of spiritual insight and guidance. It warns that those who ignore or reject the truth in this life will face greater misguidance and blindness in the Hereafter, highlighting the serious consequences of spiritual neglect. 

وَمَن كَانَ فِي هَٰذِهِۦٓ أَعْمَىٰ فَهُوَ فِي ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ أَعۡمَىٰ وَأَضَلُّ سَبِيلٗا
(Wa man kāna fī hādhihi aʿmā fa-huwa fī al-ākhirati aʿmā wa-adallu sabīlā)

"And whoever is blind in this [life] will be blind in the Hereafter and more astray in way."

The above quoted verse follows the premise given in the 71st verse which says: "One day We shall summon every community by their leaders. Those who are given their records in their right hands will read their records. None shall be wronged by as much as a hair’s breadth." 

This is a scene showing all creatures gathered together. Every group is called by the doctrine it followed in this life, or the messenger in whom it believed, or the leader it followed in this first life. It is called to be handed the record of its actions and the result that determines its reward in the life to come. Whoever is given his record in his right hand will be full of joy, reading through his record and looking carefully at its details. Such people are given their reward in full. Nothing is denied them, even though it may be no larger than a hair’s breadth. On the other hand, a person who chooses in this life to remain blind to all indications of guidance will be also blind to the way of goodness in the life to come. They will be even far more astray. The outcome they will suffer is well known. However, the sūrah portrays them in this overcrowded scene as blind, moving aimlessly, lacking a guide to lead them. They are left like this without a final abode mentioned for them. This is because the blindness and strayness in that difficult situation is a destiny to be avoided at all costs.

Let us analyze this verse and ponder over our decision to find the truth or fall into abyss of darkness forever:

Spiritual Blindness: The verse speaks about spiritual blindness, which refers to a person's inability or unwillingness to recognize the truth and guidance provided by Allah. This is different from physical blindness; it is a metaphor for lack of insight and faith.

Consequence in the Hereafter: The verse indicates that those who are spiritually blind in this world, who ignore or reject divine guidance, will remain blind in the Hereafter. This means they will face the consequences of their disbelief and misguidance in the afterlife.

Greater Misguidance: It further states that such individuals will not only be blind in the Hereafter but will also be even more astray. This emphasizes the severity of ignoring divine guidance and the compounded consequences in the afterlife.

In view of above explanation, let us ponder over the theme of this verse and what is expected of us after reading this verse:

Recognition of Truth: The verse urges individuals to seek and recognize the truth in this life. Accepting and following divine guidance is crucial for success in the Hereafter.

Accountability: It highlights the concept of accountability, where the state of one’s heart and actions in this life directly impacts their state in the Hereafter.

Guidance and Misguidance: The verse contrasts the state of being guided versus being astray, underscoring the importance of following the right path as laid out by Allah.

Qur'an shows the truth and indicates the path that leads to it. This verse if specially for the atheists who for the sake of fashion, deny existence of One True God and neglect the signs that if pondered upon seriously can lead one to God. It is these deniers of truth who are blind and unless they try to see the light at the end of the tunnel, they will be the utter losers in the life of the hereafter. 

My dear brothers and sisters in Islam, know that those who keep their eyes open and benefit from the signs of God will see their destination in the light of the full day and happily reach it without any obstruction. So let let us see the truth both visually by seeing the signs Allah has made for us, and also spiritually get enlightened with the Divine Wisdom contained in many such verses contained in Qur'an. Remember, we will be doubly responsible for not seeing the truth than the totally blind.

Who shall be brought low (on Day of Judgement)

Man is born to be obedient. Right from the day he opens his eyes, he is taught to be obedient and respectful to his parents and elders, and the chain continues as he grows. He is to be obedient and respectful to his teachers in the school and honour the school discipline. When he gets employed, he is to be loyal and obedient to his employer, and honour the rules of the company he is serving in. At no stage of one's life, one is to deviate from the rules of obedience, honour and commitment.

Now raising the pedestal level and see a man's obligation to his Creator, the Sole Lord of the entire universe. Man has not been born in vain. Like being obedient and respectful to one's elders and place of work, he too has to exhibit obedience and loyalty to his Creator. Rather the level of loyalty, obedience and honour has to be of a level incompatible with any worldly relation.

That is, one has to bow to the WILL of his Creator without even raising a eyebrow. The restrictions imposed by One and the Only God are to be accepted and adhered to without a question. These Divine Rules have been sent to man through messengers of Allah since the Prophet Adam (may peace be upon him). Initially these Divine Laws were restricted to smaller communities and then the area of influence kept expanding so that no one is left out to know and respect these Divine Laws and Commandments. The Divine Books contained these laws, four in number, sent to man through Prophets Dawud (David), Musa (Moses), Eesa (Jesus) and Muhammad (may peace be upon all). 

All along the history, we have seen communities and people have vanished from the earth when they were punished for not obeying the One True God. Today only their remains remain as a reminder to those who do not accept the Divine Commandments and dishonour His messengers and prophets. And the bounds set by God have to be respected at all costs, otherwise grievous suffering [in the life to come] awaits all who deny the truth.

With this premise in view, we share today the fifth verse of Surah 58. Al-Mujadila (The Pleading woman) to caution those who oppose Allah and His final Messenger, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and if they do not do so, they will be meted out to a treatment unimaginable on the Day of the Judgement:

اِنَّ الَّذِيۡنَ يُحَآدُّوۡنَ اللّٰهَ وَرَسُوۡلَهٗ كُبِتُوۡا كَمَا كُبِتَ الَّذِيۡنَ مِنۡ قَبۡلِهِمۡ​ وَقَدۡ اَنۡزَلۡنَاۤ اٰيٰتٍۢ بَيِّنٰتٍ​ ؕ وَ لِلۡكٰفِرِيۡنَ عَذَابٌ مُّهِيۡنٌ​ ۚ‏ 
(58:5) Verily those who oppose Allah and His Messenger shall be brought low even as those before them were brought low. Surely, We have sent down Clear Signs; and a humiliating chastisement awaits the unbelievers;
"Those who oppose. . . ": Those who do not recognize the bounds set by Allah and instead set some other bounds for themselves. Ibn Jarir Tabari has given this commentary of this verse: "That is, the people who resist Allah with regard to the bounds and duties enjoined by Him, and set for themselves some other bounds instead of the bounds set by Him." Baidawi; has given this commentary of it: "That is, they show hostility towards and dispute with Allah and His Messenger, or set other bounds for themselves than the bounds set by them, or adopt the bounds set by others. " Alusi in his Ruh Al-Ma `ani has concurred with Baidawi in this commentary and cited the statement of Shaikh-ul-Islam Sa`dullah Chalpi to the effect: "In this verse a threat has been held out to those kings and evil rulers who have framed many such rules as are opposed to the bounds set by the Shari ah, and called tjem law." Here, `Allama Alusi has dwelt upon the constitutional status (i.e, constitutional from the Islamic viewpoint) of the manmade laws as against the Shari ah laws and concluded thus:

"There can be no doubt in the disbelief of the person who regards this law as commendable and superior to the Shari ah and says that it is wiser and better suited to the genius of the people. And when the Shari ah injunction in a particular matter is pointed out to him, he is angry, as we have seen some of those who are under the curse of Allah. "  

(shall be brought low even as those before them were brought low) The word used in the original is kabt كُبِتَ, which means to disgrace, to destroy, to curse, to drive off, to push out, to debase. What is meant to be said is that the communities of the former Prophets who resisted Allah and His Messenger and rebelled against His Commandments have already gone to their doom. Now those from among the Muslims who adopt the same attitude in life will also meet with the same evil end. Whenever the people made their own laws contradictory to Divine Law, or adopted laws made by others, they were deprived of Allah's bounty and grace, with the result that their lives were filled with deviations, immoralities and moral and social evils, which caused them to be ultimately degraded and humiliated oven in this world. If the same error now is committed by the community of the Prophet Muhammad (upon whom be Allah's peace and blessings), there is no reason why it should continue to be regarded with favor by Allah and He may go on protecting it from a disgraceful destruction for ever and ever. Allah had neither any ill will against the communities of His former Messengers nor has He any special connection with the community of this Messenger. 

(Surely, We have sent down Clear Signs; and a humiliating chastisement awaits the unbelievers) A little consideration of the context shows that here two punishments of this attitude have been mentioned:
(1) Kabt, i.e. debasement and humiliation of this world; and
(2) adhab muhin, i.e. a disgraceful torment that they will suffer in the Hereafter.

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir: (Explaining the Punishment of the Enemies of the Religion)
Allah states that those who defy Him and His Messenger and contradict His commandments, (كُبِتُواْ كَمَا كُبِتَ الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ will be disgraced as those before them were disgraced) meaning, they will be humiliated, cursed and disgraced, just as what happened to their like were before them,

(وَقَدْ أَنزَلْنَآ ءَايَـتٍ بَيِّنَـتٍ And We have sent down clear Ayat.) meaning, none contradicts or opposes them, except a disbeliever, rebellious, sinner,

(وَلِلْكَـفِرِينَ عَذَابٌ مُّهِينٌ And for the disbelievers is a disgraceful torment) meaning, as just recompense for their arrogant refusal to follow, obey and submit to the religion of Allah.
 
Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Explanation:
This is a reference to the Hypocrites all of whose sympathies were with the enemies of Islam, in particular the Jews. They would launch a whispering campaign and a secret propaganda against any teaching of Islam they would regard as being against their desires. The purpose would be to create doubts in the minds of weak Muslims and strip them of their conviction in Islam.

Thus, their fate will be the same as the one met by the rejecters of the messengers of God after these messengers have conclusively communicated the truth to them. This is an established practice of God and He never changes this established practice. His law is the same for everyone.

Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:
The opening passage of the surah provided an aspect of the care shown to the Muslim community, while this second passage provides an aspect of antagonism to the opposite group who contend against God and His Messenger. The Arabic term, translated here as 'contend' is derived from the same root as the word used earlier, which means 'boundaries'. Thus, this group are defined as taking a stand at the other boundary, confronting God and His Messenger. This gives an image of two parties in contention and confrontation. As such, it serves to show their action in a very bad light. How miserable for a creature to be in open hostility to his Creator when it is He who provides him with sustenance.

These people who are in contention "shall be brought low as those who lived before them were brought low." The way this sentence is phrased in Arabic may be understood as a prayer against them. A prayer by God is a sentence of judgement that makes it inevitable since it is He who pronounces this sentence, and His will is always done. The phrase, those who lived before them,' refers either to earlier communities who were punished by God, or to the then unbelievers who suffered humiliating defeats at the hands of the Muslims prior to the revelation of this surah, as happened, for example, at the Battle of Badr.

"We have bestowed from on high clear revelations." This sentence separates the two fates suffered by the unbelievers in this life and in the life to come, in order to point out that both fates are clearly stated in these verses. It also tells us that these unbelievers do not face these fates as a result of ignorance or any ambiguity in the truth. Indeed, the truth has been put to them clearly and lucidly in these revelations, which they too have been given.

As the surah refers to their fate in the hereafter, it adds an inspiring comment that serves an educational purpose: "Shameful suffering awaits the unbelievers on the day when God will raise them all from the dead and tell them exactly all that they did in lift. God will have taken it all into account, even though they may have forgotten it. God is witness to all things. (Verses 5-6) They are made to suffer shame in punishment for their arrogance. This shameful suffering will take place on the day when all will be resurrected. Thus, it will be seen by all. Besides, the suffering is determined on the basis of a true account of their deeds. If they have forgotten these, God has recorded them all, as nothing escapes His knowledge: "God is witness to all things."

To sum the discussion on the aforesaid verse, let us say that God (with no assistance and associates) sent down His divine Wisdom in the shape of Commandments gradually, so that man could start to absorb them gradually. When communities enlarged, the requirements of imposition of Divine Law increased and Divine Books were revealed, each adding more to the previous. This finally culminated in the revelation of Qur'an, the last and the final Godly scripture for the guidance of mankind till the end of the earthly life. Hence, not accepting Qur'an but accepting the previous scriptures is sheer display of animosity to One True God and His final Messenger, Muhammad ﷺ. 

Although, many a non-Muslims, especially adherents of the earlier Divine religions, have started to accept the Divine Wisdom contained in the Qur'an and Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and entering the fold of Islam in large number, yet a majority is till hesitant to accept the truth, and show extreme hatred toward Islam and have unleashed campaign of Islamophobia to belittle Islam. They even taunt God of Muslims as something different from their God, in one case Gods, just to close their eyes from seeing and reading the truth contained in Qur'an.

But the world is getting wiser day by day as it is heartening to see more and more non-Muslims entering the fold of Islam through extensive reading of Qur'an, Sunnah and Hadith of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and realizing that the hatred spread against Islam is only to escape from reality.
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 
وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

Beware of The Day of Matter Adequate

Man feels secure in his worldly life where he is protected by his parents, family and friends whenever any distress befalls him. There is always some hope or access to a helping hand that can save from a disaster or distress. For many evil doers, their advocates and lawyers come handy who save them from clutches of justice by tacit articulation of law and let them live a free life.

But behold!! for how long. Allah gives leverage to the criminals for a considered time and provides them adequate time to repent and seek Divine forgiveness. But those who, due to their sheer arrogance, position and wealth often brush off Divine warnings and cautions for they think they can prevail upon everyone due to their position and wealth. For such ungrateful people, we share the 37th verse of Surah 80. Abasa that warns them of the Day of Matter Adequate!! 

Sūrah ʻAbasa " سورة عَبَسَ " is the eightieth sürah with 42 āyāt with two rukus, part of the 30th Juzʼ  of the Holy Qur'ān. In its verses 33-42, the picture of the day of judgement is painted when no one shall care about his own mother, father, brother or children. The world as we know it will have so completely passed away that the landmarks in the heavens and on earth will also have vanished. Not only that, but the human relationships of mind and heart will have been transformed by sin into something ugly and dreadful. The sinners will be so overcome with terror at the realization of their personal responsibility that they will desert their most intimate friends, and indeed their very sight of each other will add to their agony.

لِكُلِّ امۡرِیءٍ مِّنۡهُمۡ يَوۡمَـئِذٍ شَاۡنٌ يُّغۡنِيۡهِؕ‏ 
(80:37)   For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him.
A tradition has been reported in the Hadith by different methods and through different channels, saying that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: On the Day of Resurrection all men will rise up naked. One of his wives (according to some reporters, Aishah, according to others, Saudah, or a woman) asked in bewilderment: O Messenger of Allah, shall we (women) appear naked on that Day before the people. The prophet (peace be upon him) recited this very verse and explained that on that Day each one will have enough of his own troubles to occupy him, and will be wholly unmindful of others. (Nasai, Tirmidhi, Ibn Abi Hatim,)

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir: (The Day of Judgement and the fleeing of the People from Their Relatives during it):
Ibn `Abbas said, "As-Sakhkhah is one of the names of the Day of Judgement that Allah has magnified and warned His servants of.' Ibn Jarir said, "Perhaps it is a name for the blowing into Trumpet.'' Al-Baghawi said, "As-Sakhkhah means the thunderous shout of the Day of Judgement. It has been called this because it will deafen the ears. This means that it pierces the hearing to such an extent that it almost deafens the ears.'

(That Day shall a man flee from his brother, and from his mother and his father, and from his wife and his children.) Qatadah said, "The most beloved and then the next most beloved, and the closest of kin and then the next closest of kin -- due to the terror of that Day.' 

Allah said, (لِكُلِّ امْرِىءٍ مِّنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ شَأْنٌ يُغْنِيهِ Every man that Day will have enough to make him careless of others.) meaning, he will be preoccupied in his business and distracted from the affairs of others. 

Ibn Abi Hatim recorded from Ibn `Abbas that the Messenger of Allah said, (You will all be gathered barefoot, naked, walking and uncircumcised.) So, his wife said, "O Messenger of Allah! Will we look at or see each other's nakedness'' The Prophet replied, (Every man among them on that Day will have enough (worries) to make him careless of others) -- or he said: (he will be too busy to look.) 

Ibn `Abbas narrated that the Prophet said, (You will all be gathered barefoot, naked and uncircumcised.) So, a woman said, "Will we see or look at each other's nakedness'' He replied, (O so-and-so woman! Every man among them on that Day will have enough (worries) to make him careless of others.) At-Tirmidhi said, "This Hadith is Hasan Sahih.''

Yusuf Ali Explanation
That is "Nor friend will ask after a friend that Day. On the contrary the sinner will desire to save himself at the expense even of his own family and benefactors."

This is as said in Surah 70 Al Maarij (The Ascending Steps), verses 10-14:
  • (70:10) And no friend will ask after a friend
  • (70:11 Though they will be put in sight of each other the sinner's desire will be: would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children) That is the sinner will offer his children, his family, his kinsmen, who had sheltered and protected him, -in fact everything on earth that he could-as a ransom for himself. Such would be his selfishness and his agony.
  • (70:12) His wife and his brother
  • (70:13) His kindred who sheltered him.
  • (70:14 And all all that is on earth so it could deliver him) What would not the sinner give for his own deliverance! But nothing could save him. The Fire of Hell would be roaring for him!
Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:
The fearfulness depicted in this scene is purely psychological. It strikes the soul, isolates it and holds it in its grip. The result is that each of us will think only of ourselves. None shall have any time or power to think of others: “For each one of them will on that day have enough preoccupations of his own.” The description is vivid; yet there can be no shorter and yet more comprehensive statement to describe the general condition of worried minds and souls.

A picture has been painted, my brothers and sisters in Islam, as a caution and warning for all of us of a day when we shall stand all alone to answer for our bad deeds. And pray we do not fall short of good deeds that will be traded for each of our bad deeds, and that some good deeds are still left that could help us in achieving Divine forgiveness. However, before that day of matter adequate, let us leave all bad things and wrongdoings while we are still alive so that we do not have to stand in shame, for on that day any regret or apology will not help us.
