Three Detested people by Allah (Hadith Qudsi)

Man has not be made by Allah to live a life against His covenants and following the Satan. Those who do so are the ones most detested by Allah and have been promised the Divine Wrath on the Day of Judgement. Generally these are the people who go against the Divine covenants and deceive people when in position to do so.

This has been mentioned by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in one of Hadith Qudsi is mentioned in Sahi al-Bukhārī  (Book 34: Sales and Trade / كتاب البيوع / Chapter 106:  The sin of a person who sells a free man / باب  إِثْمِ مَنْ بَاعَ حُرًّا / as Hadith 2227, given herein under:

Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Allah says, 'I will be against three persons on the Day of Resurrection: -1. One who makes a covenant in My Name, but he proves treacherous. -2. One who sells a free person (as a slave) and eats the price, -3. And one who employs a laborer and gets the full work done by him but does not pay him his wages.' "

This hadith highlights three categories of people whom Allah will oppose on the Day of Resurrection, emphasizing the seriousness of ethical behavior, integrity, and justice in dealing with others, particularly in matters of contracts, business, and employment. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) narrated it to underscore the gravity of fulfilling one's promises and obligations. Let’s break down each point mentioned in the hadith:
  • One who makes a covenant in Allah's Name but proves treacherous: This refers to someone who swears an oath or makes a commitment, invoking Allah’s name, but later breaks their word or fails to fulfill the promise. It can apply to any agreement or contract, whether personal or professional, where a person is untrustworthy or dishonest in honoring their commitment. In Islam, trustworthiness is highly valued, and breaking an oath is considered a grave sin, especially when done in the name of Allah.
  • One who sells a free person (as a slave) and eats the price: This is a reference to human trafficking, which is a severe injustice. In the past, people could become enslaved for various reasons, but the sale of a free person (i.e., someone who is not a slave) is a grave offense. This part of the hadith condemns anyone who exploits others by selling them into slavery and unjustly taking the money gained from such an act. The hadith condemns human exploitation and trafficking, highlighting the importance of protecting the rights and dignity of every individual.
  • One who employs a laborer and gets the full work done by him but does not pay him his wages: This refers to someone who hires a worker to do a job but fails to pay them for their labor. In Islam, paying workers for their labor is considered a serious obligation. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) warned that the rights of workers must be fulfilled promptly and fairly. Not paying someone for their work or delaying their wages is unjust and will be held against the employer in the Hereafter.
Key Messages:
  • Honesty and integrity are core values in Islam, and breaking trust in contracts or promises is a serious sin.
  • Exploitation of others—whether by enslaving a free person or by withholding wages—is seen as a profound moral failing.
  • The hadith teaches that social justice and fair treatment of others are vital in Islam, especially in dealings that affect people's dignity, freedom, and livelihood.
On the Day of Judgment, those who commit such transgressions will face the opposition of Allah, meaning they will be held accountable for their actions, and their deeds will be judged harshly due to the grave nature of the wrongs they committed. This emphasizes the importance of fulfilling contracts, maintaining honesty, and treating others with fairness and respect.

Hadith Qudsi: Allah loves the believers who remain sincere in their worship

No love in this world is greater than the love of Allah for His sincere believers and worshippers. And that in fact should be the endeavour of every Muslim to do whatever is humanly possible to get closer to their Creator so that are blessed, guided and loved.

In our series of Hadith Qudsi, we share today a well-known narration where Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) reports a profound statement from Allah. This hadith is a narration where Allah speaks directly to the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), revealing His will and intentions in a personal manner and is mentioned in Sahi al-Bukhārī  (Book 81: To make the Heart Tender (Ar-Riqaq) / كتاب  الرقاق / Chapter 38:  The humility or modesty or lowliness / باب  التَّوَاضُعِ / as Hadith 6502, given herein under:

Narrated by Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said:

"Allah said, 'I will declare war against him who shows hostility to a pious worshipper of Mine. And the most beloved things with which My slave comes nearer to Me, is what I have enjoined upon him; and My slave keeps on coming closer to Me through performing Nawafil (praying or doing extra deeds besides what is obligatory) till I love him, so I become his sense of hearing with which he hears, and his sense of sight with which he sees, and his hand with which he grips, and his leg with which he walks; and if he asks Me, I will give him, and if he asks My protection (Refuge), I will protect him; (i.e. give him My Refuge) and I do not hesitate to do anything as I hesitate to take the soul of the believer, for he hates death, and I hate to disappoint him."

This hadith beautifully describes the deep relationship between Allah and His devoted worshippers. It emphasizes the importance of both obligatory and voluntary acts of worship in drawing closer to Allah. Allah promises to protect, guide, and answer the prayers of His beloved servants, and He is deeply merciful, even in matters like death. The hadith shows how much Allah loves His believers and how He is always with them, guiding them and fulfilling their needs, as long as they remain sincere in their worship.

This hadith explains several key concepts about Allah's relationship with His believers, focusing on His mercy, love, and guidance. Let's look at the different parts of the hadith and explain their meanings:

"I will declare war against him who shows hostility to a pious worshipper of Mine."
  • Meaning: Allah is saying that if someone shows hostility, harm, or opposition to a sincere and pious worshiper (a true servant of Allah), He will oppose that person. This highlights the sanctity of those who are devoted to worship and the protection Allah provides to His sincere believers.
  • Significance: This is a reminder of the importance of protecting the rights of those who are righteous and dedicated to their faith. Those who oppose or harm them will face consequences because of Allah's protection over His servants.
  • Related Qur'anic Concept: This idea of protecting the believers and punishing those who harm them is echoed in the Qur'an. For example, Surah Al-Baqarah (2:190) says: "Fight in the way of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress. Indeed, Allah does not like transgressors." Allah protects His believers, and those who harm them will face consequences.
"The most beloved things with which My slave comes nearer to Me, is what I have enjoined upon him."
  • Meaning: Allah is telling us that the most beloved acts to Him are the ones He has commanded us to do — the obligatory acts of worship like the five daily prayers (Salah), fasting in Ramadan, giving charity (Zakat), and other essential duties.
  • Significance: This emphasizes the importance of fulfilling the obligations prescribed by Allah. These acts of worship are the foundation of a Muslim's relationship with Allah.
  • Related Qur'anic Concept: In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:177), Allah says: "It is not righteousness that you turn your faces toward the East or the West, but righteousness is in one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets..." This verse highlights that fulfilling Allah’s commandments is the core of righteousness.
"My slave keeps on coming closer to Me through performing Nawafil (extra deeds) till I love him..."

Profound relationship between Allah and His devout worshippers (Hadith Qudsi)

Islam is a unique religion in which there is a profound and direct one to one linkage between Allah and His worshippers. This linkage does not require the need of an intermediary to convey one's heart out to one's Creator. This relationship become more closer if the believer is devout worshipper who does not look to anyone but to Allah.

The relationship between Allah (God) and a true believer is deeply rooted in concepts of love, obedience, trust, and closeness. It is a relationship of absolute submission and devotion, based on the recognition of Allah's supremacy, mercy, compassion, and justice. This relationship is expressed through worship, adherence to Allah’s commands, and a personal connection with Him through prayer, supplication, and reliance.

Talking this very close relationship  between Allah and the devout worshipper, we share today a Hadith Qudsi attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, as mentioned in Sahi al-Bukhārī  (Book 81: To make the Heart Tender (Ar-Riqaq) / كتاب  الرقاق / Chapter 38:  The humility or modesty or lowliness / باب  التَّوَاضُعِ / as Hadith 6502, given herein under:

Narrated by Abu Huraira:

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Allah said, 'I will declare war against him who shows hostility to a pious worshipper of Mine.

This Hadith Qudsi is a profound narration in which Allah speaks directly, expressing His immense love and closeness to His sincere worshippers. It encapsulates the profound relationship between Allah and His devout worshippers. It aligns perfectly with the themes found in the Qur'an: that Allah loves the believers who fulfill His commands, and those who go beyond the obligatory acts of worship by performing Nawafil draw even closer to Him. Allah promises to guide, protect, and fulfill the requests of His righteous servants, and He is deeply compassionate toward them. This hadith serves as a reminder of the boundless mercy of Allah and encourages believers to strive for closeness to Him through both obligatory and voluntary acts of worship.

Let's break down the key components of the hadith and examine them in the light of the Qur'an:
  • Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Allah said: "I will declare war against him who shows hostility to a pious worshipper of Mine." Allah declares that anyone who opposes or harms a true believer, particularly one who is devoted in worship, will be in direct opposition to Allah Himself. This emphasizes the importance of respecting and protecting those who sincerely worship Allah.
  • "The most beloved things with which My slave comes nearer to Me, is what I have enjoined upon him..." Allah reveals that the most beloved actions to Him are those that He has commanded—such as the obligatory prayers (Salah), fasting, and other mandatory acts of worship.
  • "My slave keeps on coming closer to Me through performing Nawafil (extra deeds) till I love him..." Beyond obligatory worship, Allah invites His believers to engage in extra acts of worship (Nawafil), like voluntary prayers, charity, and other good deeds. This voluntary worship gradually brings the believer closer to Allah, leading to His love.
  • "So I become his sense of hearing with which he hears, and his sense of sight with which he sees, and his hand with which he grips, and his leg with which he walks..." Allah promises a deep level of closeness and guidance to His beloved servant, to the point where Allah's guidance becomes intertwined with the believer's senses and actions. This signifies that when a believer is in such close proximity to Allah, their actions are guided by Him, and they follow the path of righteousness in every aspect of their lives.
  • "If he asks Me, I will give him, and if he asks My protection (Refuge), I will protect him..." Allah guarantees that when a believer seeks from Him, He will fulfill their needs, and when they seek His protection, He will grant it. This reflects Allah’s generosity and mercy toward those who are devoted to Him.
  • "I do not hesitate to do anything as I hesitate to take the soul of the believer, for he hates death, and I hate to disappoint him." Allah admits that He loves the believer so much that He hesitates to take their life, as they dislike death. This part of the hadith shows Allah's deep love and compassion for His righteous servants.
Understanding the Hadith in Light of the Qur'an
Now, let’s understand the meaning and implications of this hadith through the lens of the Qur'an.

Hostility Toward Pious Believers: Allah promises protection to the believers and warns those who oppose them.
  • In Surah Al-Mujadila (58:22), it says: "You will not find a people who believe in Allah and the Last Day loving those who oppose Allah and His Messenger..." Those who show hostility toward the pious invite Allah’s anger, and this hadith emphasizes the severity of such opposition.
  • In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:190), Allah commands the believers to defend themselves against oppressors: "Fight in the way of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress. Indeed, Allah does not like transgressors."
The Beloved Acts of Worship (Fard and Nawafil): Allah loves those who fulfill their obligatory acts of worship.
  • In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:177), Allah explains the importance of doing what He has commanded: "It is not righteousness that you turn your faces toward the East or the West, but righteousness is in one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets..." This verse shows that fulfilling Allah's commands is central to righteousness.
  • Additionally, the concept of Nawafil (voluntary acts) is supported in Surah Al-Isra (17:79), where Allah says: "And from part of the night, pray with it (as voluntary) for extra worship for you. It is expected that your Lord will raise you to a praised station." This reinforces the idea that voluntary acts of worship bring a believer closer to Allah.
Allah’s Closeness to His Beloved Servants: Allah’s promise to be with His servant in every aspect of their life reflects the deeper connection a believer develops through worship.
  • Surah Al-Baqarah (2:286) states: "Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear." When a person becomes close to Allah, their heart is aligned with Allah’s will, and they are protected from hardship that they cannot bear.
  • In Surah At-Tawbah (9:24), Allah says: "Say, 'If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your wives, your relatives, the wealth you have acquired, the commerce in which you fear decline, and the dwellings in which you delight are more beloved to you than Allah and His Messenger, and striving in His cause, then wait until Allah executes His command..." This highlights how one's connection with Allah should be the most important thing in their life.
Allah’s Mercy and Generosity:
The promise that Allah will give the believer what they ask for and protect them is consistent with His attribute as Al-Rahman (The Most Merciful) and Al-Ghaffar (The Constant Forgiver). Allah's mercy is mentioned numerous times in the Qur'an, like in Surah Az-Zumar (39:53): "Say, 'O My servants who have harmed yourselves by your own actions, do not despair of Allah’s mercy. Allah forgives all sins. He is truly the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful." This verse emphasizes the vastness of Allah's mercy, a central theme in the hadith.

The Hesitation to Take the Soul of a Believer:
Allah’s compassion toward the believer and His reluctance to take their life is reflected in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:69): "And those who strive for Us - We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allah is with the doers of good." Allah is deeply invested in the well-being of the believers, and this hadith illustrates His love and hesitation to take their lives, highlighting His mercy and care for His righteous servants.

We, the Muslims, are fortunate to be of a religion wherein there exists a direct relationship between us and our Creator. We do not have to run around to find someone to pray on our behalf. We should therefore never let go this one to one communication and try to be a true and devout believer and worshipper so that Allah heeds to our prayers as He promised us in the Hadith Qudsi quoted above.
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

Hadith Qudsi: Two occasions of joy for one who fasts

The month of Ramadan assumes immense importance in Islam. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is considered the holiest month for Muslims. It is one of the five pillars of Islam, therefore has it linkage directly connected to Allah, the Almighty. In fact, Ramadan is not just a month of fasting but a time for deep spiritual reflection, increased devotion, and self-discipline.

We have posted a number of posts based on Qur'an and Sunnah about Ramadan. In our effort to educated our readers about the importance of this sacred month, we share today a Hadith Qudsi. Although we have explained what a Hadith Qudsi really is and how does it differ from other hadiths attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in our earlier post: Collection of Hadith e Qudsi (حدیثِ قُدسی) attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , let us briefly recapitulate the difference between Hadith Qudsi and remaining Hadiths:

The straight difference between Qur'an and Hadith e Qudsi is that the text of Qur'an is verbatim from Allah, which were conveyed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and were conveyed to his companions in the same Divine words without any alteration. That is the words and meaning of the text of Qur'an is UNALTERED and remains unaltered as Allah Himself has taken upon Him the responsibility of conservation of Qur'an from any infiltration of manmade alterations.

As for the text of Hadith Qudsi is concerned, it contains the exact meaning as was intended by Allah Himself, but these were conveyed by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in his own words. Thus, while Hadith e Qudsi is from Allah, it cannot be made part of Qur'an for it has been re-worded by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. And it is for this very reason that in Hadith e Qudsi, it is always said that Allah has said this, or promised such a such thing. Hadith a Qudsi, thus cannot be treated or taken at par with Qur'an.

Let us now share a Hadith Qudsi regarding the month of Ramadan, fasting and the rewards it carry. This Hadith is mentioned in Sahih Muslim  (Book 13: The Book of Fasting / كتاب  الصيام / Chapter 30:  The Virtue of Fasting / باب فَضْلِ الصِّيَامِ / as Hadith 115e, given herein under:

Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:

Every (good) deed of the son of Adam would be multiplied, a good deed receiving a tenfold to seven hundredfold reward. Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, has said: With the exception of fasting, for it is done for Me and I will give a reward for it, for one abandons his passion and food for My sake. There are two occasions of joy for one who fasts, joy when he breaks it, and joy when he meets his Lord, and the breath (of an observer of fast) is sweeter to Allah than the fragrance of musk.

It highlights the unique status of fasting as an act of worship and its unparalleled reward from Allah.

Explanation of the Hadith in Light of the Qur'an and Sunnah:
1. Multiplication of Good Deeds:
  • Hadith Details: The Prophet (peace be upon him) mentions that every good deed performed by the son of Adam is multiplied from ten times to seven hundred times, except for fasting. The reward for fasting is uniquely with Allah, and He will directly reward it.
  • Qur'anic Reference: The Qur'an mentions the multiplication of rewards in several verses. Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah: "The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like that of a seed of grain that grows seven spikes, and in each spike is a hundred grains." (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:261). This verse emphasizes how Allah multiplies the reward of charitable acts. Similarly, other good deeds like prayer, zakat, and good actions are multiplied by Allah’s mercy. However, fasting is singled out in the hadith as having a reward that only Allah Himself will determine and give.
  • Sunnah: While good deeds in general receive a multiplied reward, fasting holds a unique place because it is an act of complete devotion and sincerity. The Prophet (peace be upon him) is reported to have said: "Allah says: 'All the actions of the son of Adam are for him, except fasting, which is for Me, and I will give the reward for it.'" (Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim). This illustrates the special status of fasting.
2. Fasting as an Act for Allah Alone:
  • Hadith Details: The Prophet (peace be upon him) explains that fasting is done for Allah’s sake alone. The fasting person abandons their desires, food, and drink solely out of devotion to Allah, not for any material or worldly benefit.
  • Qur'anic Reference: In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah commands: "And it is better for you that you fast, if you only knew." (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:184). Fasting is a direct, personal connection with Allah. The individual sacrifices their physical needs, seeking only Allah’s pleasure.
  • Sunnah: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Fasting is for Me, and I will reward it." (Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim). This indicates that fasting is a unique act that is not just a ritual or physical exercise but a spiritual act of complete submission to Allah.
3. Two Joys of the Fasting Person:
  • Hadith Details: The fasting person experiences two occasions of joy: first, when they break their fast at the end of the day, and second, when they meet their Lord in the Hereafter, receiving their reward.
  • Qur'anic Reference: In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says: "And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread of night, then complete the fast until the night." (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:187). This verse refers to the moment of joy when one breaks their fast at sunset, which is a time of gratitude to Allah for the strength to complete the day’s fast.
  • Sunnah: The Prophet (peace be upon him) further elaborates on the two moments of joy. The first joy is when the fasting person eats and drinks after the long day of fasting, and the second is when they meet Allah on the Day of Judgment. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "In Jannah, there is a gate called Ar-Raiyan, through which only those who fast will enter on the Day of Judgment." (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 1896). This signifies the ultimate reward and joy the fasting person will experience in the Hereafter.
4. The Breath of the Fasting Person is Sweeter to Allah than Musk:
  • Hadith Details: The hadith highlights that the breath of the fasting person, which may not smell pleasant to human senses, is cherished by Allah and is more beloved to Him than the fragrance of musk, a precious and fragrant substance.
  • Qur'anic Reference: There isn’t a specific verse in the Qur'an that directly discusses the smell of the fasting person’s breath. However, the Qur'an often emphasizes that Allah values actions done sincerely for His sake, and He sees beyond worldly appearances. Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah: "Indeed, Allah does not look at your bodies or your appearances, but He looks at your hearts and your deeds." (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:265). This reflects the idea that Allah values the internal sincerity and devotion of the fasting person over outward appearances.
  • Sunnah: The Prophet (peace be upon him) has pointed out that the fasting person's breath is sweeter to Allah than the fragrance of musk, illustrating how Allah appreciates the sacrifice made by His servant. This is a reminder that, in the eyes of Allah, the sincerity and devotion of an act of worship hold far greater value than any outward, worldly considerations.
Key Takeaways from the Hadith:
  • Special Reward for Fasting: Fasting is an act done purely for the sake of Allah, and its reward is uniquely determined by Him. Unlike other deeds that are multiplied in reward, fasting's reward is not limited and is promised directly by Allah.
  • Two Joys of Fasting: The fasting person experiences joy when breaking the fast, which symbolizes the physical reward, and ultimate joy when meeting Allah in the Hereafter, which signifies the spiritual reward.
  • The Unseen Value of Fasting: The fasting person's breath, although considered less pleasant in the worldly sense, is beloved to Allah, symbolizing the purity and sincerity of the fast.
  • Spiritual Significance: The act of fasting symbolizes deep devotion, personal sacrifice, and closeness to Allah. It is not just about abstaining from food and drink, but about purifying oneself spiritually and mentally.
This hadith, in the light of above explanation,  emphasizes the unique spiritual significance of fasting. It highlights that fasting is an act of worship that transcends the physical and connects the believer directly to Allah, resulting in a reward that is beyond human comprehension. Let all Muslim brothers and sisters make sure no fast is wasted away in the month of Ramadan and we fast with only intention: To please Allah and no one else. In sha Allah

Collection of Hadith e Qudsi (حدیثِ قُدسی) attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

We have been sharing sayings attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, called Hadiths, selected from a large reservoir of Hadiths by some of the leading and most authentic Hadith collectors of Muslim history. Many of these Hadiths are authentic, while many others are weak or good with some semblance of authenticity.

However, there are about forty hadiths from the large reservoir which are known as Hadith e Qudsi. These Hadiths are directly attributed to Allah. Here a question arises that of these Hadith e Qudsi are attributed directly to Allah, then what is the difference between the words of Allah in Qur'an and these Hadith e Qudsi.

Although, many a scholar are of the opinion that number of Hadith e Qudsi is more than 200, yet authenticated Hadith e Qudsi are numbered forty and are agreed upon by majority of leading Islamic scholars. following are some of the Hadith e Qudsi attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, while more will be added to make the total number to forty, In Sha Allah.
