Who are the Blessed Seven regarded as martyrs in Islam (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

Generally speaking, whenever the word martyrdom is taken in Islam, people mostly understand the loss of life in battle. However, this is not always the case. In fact martyrdom in Islam has a much wider meaning and It also includes those who lose life prematurely by natural causes, accidents, or illnesses, and even mothers who lose their lives while giving birth. Some even attribute death of the people at the hands of unjust rulers as martyrdom too.

Let us first define the word used in Arabic for the martyrs:

In Arabic, the word used for a martyr is Shahīd (Arabic: شهيد). The word is used frequently in the Quran in the generic sense of "witness" but only once in the sense of "martyr" (i.e. one who dies for his faith); the latter sense acquires wider usage in the hadith. The term's usage is also borrowed by non-Muslim communities where Persianate Islamic empires held cultural influence, such as amongst Hindus and Sikhs in India.

The companions of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ often clarified the same and wanted a prophetic interpretation of the word martyr or shaheed as in Arabic. Today we share two hadiths attributed to the revered Prophet of Allah to clarify who really is a martyr beside the one who dies in battle in protection of one's faith or country.

The first clarification is mentioned in Ṣaḥīḥ al‑Bukhārī hadith 2829, an authentic hadith with profound implications when viewed alongside the Qurʾān and supporting hadiths:
  • First Hadith (Bukhārī 2829)
    • Narrated by Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): “Five are regarded as martyrs: those who die from plague, abdominal disease, drowning, a falling building (death by collapse), and the martyr in Allah’s cause.”
    • Context & Explanation: This hadith expands the concept of martyrdom (shahādah) beyond battlefield death, reflecting the Qurʾānic principle that true sacrifice and sincerity count in the sight of Allah.
The second clarification is mentioned in Sunan Abi Dawud hadith 3111, graded Sahi (Albani) adds three more categories to the above stated hadith:
  • Second Hadith (Sunan Abi Dawud 3111)
    • Narrated Jabir ibn Atik: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came to visit Abdullah ibn Thabit who was ill. He found that he was dominated (by the divine decree). The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) called him loudly, but he did not respond. He uttered the Qur'anic verse "We belong to Allah and to Him do we return" and he said: We have been dominated against you, AburRabi'. Then the women cried and wept, and Ibn Atik began to silence them. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Leave them, when the divine decree is made, no woman should weep.
    • They (the people) asked: What is necessary happening, Messenger of Allah? He replied: Death. His daughter said: I hope you will be a martyr, for you have completed your preparations for jihad.
    • The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Allah Most High gave him a reward according to his intentions. What do you consider martyrdom? They said: Being killed in the cause of Allah.
    • The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: There are seven types of martyrdom in addition to being killed in Allah's cause:
      • one who dies of plague is a martyr;
      • one who is drowned is a martyr;
      • one who dies of pleurisy is a martyr;
      • one who dies of an internal complaint is a martyr;
      • one who is burnt to death is a martyr;
      • who one is killed by a building falling on him is a martyr;
      • and a woman who dies while pregnant is a martyr.
So the above two hadiths agree on four type of people who die and are considered as martyrs, beside the one lays down one's life in a battle. However, since the second hadith too is authentic, three more cases are added: (1) one who dies of plague is a martyr (2) one who is burnt to death is a martyr (3) a woman who dies while pregnant.

Some scholars sub divide the martyrdom into two main categories: ‘Shahadah Haqeeqiyyah’ i.e. real martyrdom (that is martyrdom in the battle), whereas other forms of martyrdoms are considered ‘Shahadah Hukmiyyah’ i.e. legal martyrdom, the remaining six categories mentioned above.

Qurʾānic Foundations of Martyrdom
The Qurʾān links martyrdom with ultimate sincerity and sacrifice, especially in verses promising paradise for those who give their wealth and lives for Allah’s way (e.g. Qurʾān 3:169‑170).

In Qur'an, a Shahīd (شهيد) is considered one whose place in Paradise is promised according to following verses in the Quran

(3:169) Think not of those slain in the way of Allah as dead. Indeed they are living, and with their Lord they have their sustenance, (3:170) rejoicing in what Allah has bestowed upon them out of His bounty, jubilant that neither fear nor grief shall come upon the believers left behind in the world who have not yet joined them.

Allah hath purchased of the believers their persons and their goods; for theirs (in return) is the garden (of Paradise): they fight in His cause, and slay and are slain: a promise binding on Him in truth, through the Torah, the Gospel, and the Qur’an: and who is more faithful to his covenant than Allah? then rejoice in the bargain which ye have concluded: that is the achievement supreme. (Qur'an 9:111)

The Quranic passage that follows is the source of the concept of Muslim martyrs being promised Paradise:

Those who leave their homes in the cause of Allah, and are then slain or die,- On them will Allah bestow verily a goodly Provision: Truly Allah is He Who bestows the best provision. Verily He will admit them to a place with which they shall be well pleased: for Allah is All-Knowing, Most Forbearing. — Quran 22:58–59

However, the above said verses does not explicitly enumerate the categories mentioned in the two hadiths quoted above; later clarified by  Prophet Muhammad ﷺ  which clarify categories of sacrifice beyond combat.

Spiritual & Legal Implications in Islam
These hadith assure Muslims that suffering and death in the course of unavoidable calamities—plague, illness, drowning, disasters and death due to pregnancy—are not wasted but count as elevated status before Allah.  These categories provides spiritual comfort and encourages perseverance even in misfortune.

Supporting Traditions & Interpretations
Sahih Muslim 2829 complements this meaning with a profound description: Allah will ask the dwellers of Paradise, “Are you pleased?” and, upon affirmative response, say: “Shall I not give you something better?” They respond “What is better than that?” He replies: “My pleasure—and I will never be displeased with you ever again.”

The above quoted Hadiths though label true martyrdom in the battle, the others teach that sincere suffering in God’s way is similarly honored.

Conclusion
Th above quoted hadiths clarify a broader understanding of martyrdom: not only the warrior, but the patient sufferer, provided the intention is right, enters Allah’s mercy as a martyr. It builds on Qur’anic values of sacrifice and sincerity, and evokes deeper hope for believers enduring trials.

Let us pray that when we die, we die in true faith with a hope of being honoured of inclusion in the categories of martyrs as mentioned in the Hadiths so quoted. Ameen
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.

That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

Note: When we mention God in our posts, we mean One True God, we call Allah in Islam, with no associates. Allah is the Sole Creator of all things, and that Allah is all-powerful and all-knowing. Allah has no offspring, no race, no gender, no body, and is unaffected by the characteristics of human life.

Why stories of the past are retold in Al-Qurʾān?

There always has been a rejection of AL Qur'an by polytheists and non Muslims on the ground that stories in Al Qur'an has borrowed stories from the people of the past or as mentioned in the earlier Divine scriptures. Thus they label it as a replication of past events or Al Qur'an at best being a book of history. While raising such objections against Qur'an, they fail to understand the Divine philosophy of retelling the past to those are present and the one's who will be in the future.

It is said in Qur'an (12:111):
"Certainly in their stories is a lesson for people of understanding. This [Qur'an] is not a tale invented, but a confirmation of what was before it, and a detailed explanation of all things, and guidance and mercy for a people who believe."

It is for this reason, Al Qur’an often retells stories of previous prophets and communities — sometimes with repetition, variation, or emphasis on different details. This isn't redundancy. Rather, it serves a powerful and intentional purpose, especially for people of all times, including today.

Let us examine the WHY of retelling of stories of the people of the past:

Why Are Stories Retold in the Qur’an?
  • To introduce to the Polytheists of Makkah the Evolution of the Divine Religions
    • The pagans of Makkah have had no interaction with a messenger before. Thus presenting them a Divine Scripture could not be done in a vacuum.
    • Beside there were some Christians and Jews in Makkah and Medina who raised the similar observations about stories from the past for some of these were already mentioned in Torah and Injeel (present day Bible).
    • Thus these stories were retold to reconnect Qur'an to the past and establish a continuity of the Divine message that was already there in the form of Torah and Injeel or in the history books.
  • To Teach Through Repetition and Reflection
    • Human beings learn best through repetition, especially when lessons are deep or emotionally charged.
    • “And We certainly have diversified in this Qur'an for the people from every example…” (Qur’an 17:89)
    • Each retelling highlights a different angle — spiritual, moral, historical, or emotional.
  • To Show Consistency of Divine Message
    • The core message of all prophets — monotheism, justice, accountability — is consistent.
    • “Indeed, this is in the former scriptures — the scriptures of Abraham and Moses.” (Qur’an 87:18–19)
    • By retelling stories of Nuh (Noah), Musa (Moses), Ibrahim (Abraham), Yusuf (Joseph) and others, the Qur’an re-emphasizes:
      • Oneness of God
      • Oneness of Divine message
      • One moral system across history
  • To Support and Console the Prophet ﷺ
    • Stories were revealed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ during times of trial — especially rejection and persecution in Makkah.
    • And all We relate to you of the news of the messengers is so that We may make your heart firm thereby…” (Qur’an 11:120)
    • The stories gave him strength by showing:
      • He was not alone
      • All prophets were rejected by their people before being vindicated
  • To Provide Timeless Lessons for Humanity: Every story contains universal themes that are eternally relevant:
    • Adam & Iblis: Origins of human free will, arrogance vs obedience, repentance
    • Nuh (Noah): Patience with rejection, persistence in Da‘wah, trusting Allah
    • Ibrahim (Abraham): Tawheed (pure monotheism), sacrifice, submission
    • Musa (Moses): Speaking truth to power, liberation from oppression, leadership under pressure
    • Yusuf (Joseph): Patience, resisting temptation, family dynamics, divine planning
    • Lut (Lot): Warnings against social and moral corruption and homosexuality
    • Musa vs Pharaoh: Tyranny vs humility, false power vs divine truth
  • To Warn, Encourage, and Educate Us
    • These stories are not history for entertainment, but "ʿibrah" (lessons) as Allah says:
    • "Indeed, in their stories there is a lesson (ʿibrah) for people of understanding..."
    • (Qur’an 12:111)
    • Stories show the consequences of arrogance, injustice, corruption — and the rewards of faith, patience, and obedience.
Do These Stories Matter Today
The stories of the bygone people, their rise and fall are retold time and again so that people of the future take heed from these and do not commit the same follies as were done by the people of the past and became the reason of their destruction and extinction. However, man, always being stubborn and arrogant, never learns. Herein under is the correlation between our present with the stories so retold:
  • Injustice, Racism, Tyranny: Story of Pharaoh and Musa – resist oppression with truth and faith
  • Youth dealing with temptation: Story of Yusuf – resisting sin and choosing dignity over desire
  • Moral corruption in society: People of Lut – warning against normalized immorality
  • Loneliness, abandonment, or trauma: Stories of Yusuf, Maryam – trusting Allah in isolation
  • Interfaith dialogue: Stories of Ibrahim, Musa, ‘Isa – common ground among Abrahamic faiths
  • Social collapse due to arrogance and denial: Stories of ‘Ād, Thamud, and past nations – rise and fall of civilizations
Conclusion:
The Qur’an retells stories for deeper reflection “So relate the stories that they may reflect.” (Qur’an 7:176) to:
  • Teach moral and spiritual truths
  • Inspire reflection and action
  • Connect the past to the present
  • Show the universality of the human struggle
  • Demonstrate that divine justice is always at work
These not just stories. They're mirrors. They reflect us — our choices, our societies, our futures.

Let us learn from the past, the arrogance of people of the earlier times who vehemently rejected the Divine Da'wah, tortured the prophets, messengers and the righteous to prevail their way of life, culture and traditions continuing down from their ancestors. Today, we stand at the crossroads as always for people of earlier Divine Scriptures are not ready to accept Al Qur'an as a Divine Scripture and Islam as a religion of God.

Not only this, the WHY of the ultimate fate of the people who were Divinely cursed has not been ever correlated with the ills of the societies we are facing today. People are being tortured, killed and subdued by those who want to dominate and rule with no rival in sight. Today, Injustice, Racism, Tyranny is at peak and it seems we have never opened our history books and Divine Scriptures to draw lessons for us by knowing how earlier people were subjected to Divine wrath and perished, leaving behind their once mighty palaces and structure in ruins forever.
وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏

Indeed, Most of the People are in Utter Ignorance

We have been talking of traits of Most of the people in our previous posts who despite knowing the truth and available signs, indications, substance and guidance, refuse to believe what real truth is and mock those who try to lead them to truth. This happens when one clings to whatever knowledge one may have and does not want to develop more to the knowledge base and in fact is adamant to face the realities emerging out of signs around.

One of the major causes of such stubborn and uncompromising behaviour is utter ignorance. The ignorance to accept reality that is contained in the Divine Scriptures and its explanation by prophets and messengers of Allah keeps most of the people away from the truth. For such people, no matter how much explanation is given, or how many signs are shown, the realities remain obscured because of their indifferent attitude to accept the truth.

We share today the 111th verse of Surah 6. Al An'am (The cattle) which talks of such people who are in utter ignorance state and even Allah makes no effort to put them back to the right track, for Allah only guides those who accept their state of ignorance and want to make amends and seek knowledge that leads them to path chosen by the Lord of the worlds.

However, the good thing is that many of the most are now heading toward the Divine Truth and coming under the fold of Islam. This is so because people have shunned ignorance and are looking for the truth that was obscured by the veil of ignorance and prejudices.

(6:111) Even if We had sent angels down to them and the dead had spoken to them, and even if We had assembled before them all the things, face to face, they would still not believe unless it be Allah's will that they believe. Most of them behave in utter ignorance.
That is, "As they are not going to reject falsehood and accept the Truth by making a free and deliberate choice, the only alternative left for making them follow it is that Allah should force it upon them: He should change their nature so as to deprive them of the freedom of thought and action like other species which have not been made responsible for what they do. But this is against the wisdom of the object for which Allah has created man. You should not, therefore, expect that Allah would make them believers by His supernatural intervention."

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir
Allah says: `Had We accepted what the disbelievers asked for,' that is -- those who swore their strongest oaths by Allah that if a miracle came to them, they would believe in it -- `had We sent down angels, ' to convey to them Allah's Message, in order to support the truth of the Messengers, as they asked, when they said:
  • (Or you bring Allah and the angels before (us) face to face.) [17:92]
  • (They said: "We shall not believe until we receive the like of that which the Messengers of Allah had received.') [6:124] and,
  • (And those who expect not a meeting with Us said: "Why are not the angels sent down to us, or why do we not see our Lord" Indeed they think too highly of themselves, and are scornful with great pride.) [25:21]
Allah said: (and the dead had spoken unto them,) This is, to inform them of the truth of what the Messengers brought them;

(And We had gathered together all things before them,) before their eyes, as `Ali bin Abi Talhah and Al-`Awfi reported from Ibn `Abbas. This is the view of Qatadah and `Abdur-Rahman bin Zayd bin Aslam. This Ayah means, if all nations were gathered before them, one after the other, and each one testifies to the truth of what the Messengers came with, (they would not have believed, unless Allah willed,) for guidance is with Allah not with them. Certainly, Allah guides whom He wills and misguides whom He wills, and He does what He wills.

(He cannot be questioned about what He does, while they will be questioned.) [21:23], This is due to His knowledge, wisdom, power, supreme authority and irresistibility.

Similarly, Allah said: (Truly, those, against whom the Word (wrath) of your Lord has been justified, will not believe. Even if every sign should come to them, until they see the painful torment.) [10:96-97]

Yusuf Ali Explanation
The most stupendous miracles even according to their ideas would not have convinced them. If the whole pageant of the spiritual world were brought before them, they would not have believed, because they -of their own choice and will -refuse knowledge and faith.

Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Explanation:
The implication is that God guides to faith only those who are true seekers of the truth. The nature of ignorance which afflicts them and the conditions they impose instead of deciding on the basis of knowledge and arguments will never induce them to seek guidance.

Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:
Al-Tabari, a famous scholar and commentator on the Qur’an says of this verse: “God says to His Messenger (peace be upon him): Muhammad, you should give up any hope of success for those who equate idols with their Lord and who claim that they would believe if they are given a sign. Even though We would send the angels down to them so that they may see them with their own eyes, and if we cause the dead to come back to life and speak to them supporting you and confirming your prophethood and assuring them that your message is the truth, and even if we would range everything in front of them testifying to your message, they would still refuse to believe in you and would continue to deny your message, unless God wills otherwise. Most of those unbelievers are ignorant of this fact. They think that accepting the faith or denying it is their prerogative. This is not true. It is all within My power. Only those I guide to success accept the faith, and those I turn away deny it.”
