I did not create jinn and mankind except to worship Me - The Deeper meaning of Al Qur'an verse 51:56

Al Qur'an is a Divine Book of guidance for the entire mankind, for every verse of it guides the man how to live a life based on true faith and worship his Creator, we Muslim call Allah. While men can understand every verse of Al Qur'an, as it is said in the Book that we revealed this Book in easily understandable text, yet every verse needs human wisdom to understand the true meaning of each verse. This has been the endeavour of the eminent Muslim scholars and exegetes of Al Qur'an to reflect deeply on each verse and bring out the hidden Divine Wisdom to an extent, for Allah only know what the holy words in AL Qur'an really mean.

With this premise in view, we share a simple, yet a deep meaning verse, from Surah Adh-Dhāriyāt, the 51st Surah / Chapter of Qur'an given herein under and will try to know its apparent and deeper meaning:

وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَالْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ
“I did not create jinn and mankind except to worship Me.”

The apparent Meaning
For an ordinary believer and a beginner who is try to learn Islam, this verse simply states that Allah did not create mankind and the jinns (the invisible beings) only to worship Allah. But does this mean men and jinn are directed only to sit in a corner of a masjid to continue worshipping Allah? Well to an extent this explanation is OK for the ordinary believers - but not for the scholars. Let us understand how:

The Deeper Meaning of “Worship” (ʿIbādah)
In the Qur’anic sense, ʿibādah is much deeper than rituals. It includes:
  • Knowing Allah (maʿrifah)
  • Loving Him
  • Obeying Him consciously
  • Living ethically and justly
  • Aligning your will with truth
Eminent Muslim scholar and exegete Ibn Kathir notes that worshipping Allah means obeying His commands and adhering to what He has legislated, recognizing Him as the sole Creator.

Enlightened scholars of the Muslim World Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi notes: The word `ibadat (service, worship) in this verse has not been used in the sense of only prayer, fasting and other kinds of such worship so that one may understand that the jinn and men have been created only for performing the Prayer, observing the Fast and for praising and glorifying Allah. Although this sense also is included in it, this is not its complete sense. Its complete sense is that the jinn and men have not been created for the worship, obedience and carrying out of the orders of any other but Allah. They are not there to bow to any other, to carry out the orders of any other, to live in fear of any other, to follow the religion enjoined by any other, to look upon any other as the maker and destroyer of ones destiny, and to supplicate any other than Allah for help.

So the verse really means: “You were created to live in conscious awareness and alignment with your Creator.”

Why This Purpose Matters (Philosophically)
This verse answers a core human problem:
  • Without this purpose:
    • Life becomes fragmented and meaning becomes self-invented and unstable
    • The الإنسان (human) becomes a slave to his desires, environment and ego.
  • With this purpose:
    • Life gains unity and actions gain direction
    • The man الإنسان becomes free from everything except Allah
  • Paradoxically: Worship of Allah is what liberates a person from slavery to everything else.
A Subtle but Powerful Point: Allah’s Independence
Following the Surah 51, the next verses clarify: “I do not want from them any provision, nor do I want them to feed Me.” (51:57)
  • This removes a common misunderstanding that Allah does not benefit from our worship - rather worship of Allah benefits us: spiritually, morally and .psychologically
  • Thus, the purpose is not: “Serve God because He needs you” - but “Turn to God because you need Him.”
Psychological Depth of the Verse
This verse explains something observable in human life for people are always “worshipping” something:, like
  • Wealth
  • Status
  • Power
  • Relationships
  • Self (ego)
The Qur’an redirects this innate tendency: You cannot escape worship—you can only choose what you worship. That is:
  • Worship of dunya leads to anxiety, emptiness
  • Worship of Allah leads to inner stability and meaning
Applicability in Today’s World
This verse is extremely relevant today :
  • In a world of distraction: Constant noise, media, and materialism, this verse calls for focus and higher purpose
  • In a crisis of meaning, many struggle with “What’s the point of life?” - To those, this verse gives a clear, stable answer
  • In moral confusion, right and wrong become subjective whereas worship grounds ethics in divine guidance
  • In personal life, this verse transforms:
    • Work into worship (if done ethically)
    • Family life into worship, and
    • Daily actions into meaningful acts
A Profound Way to Understand the Verse
The verse can be read on three levels:
  • Existential: Why do I exist? - To worship Allah
  • Spiritual: What fulfills me? - Connection with Allah
  • Practical: How should I live? - With awareness, obedience, and sincerity
Final Reflection
This verse is not a restriction—it is a redefinition of life:
  • You were not created randomly, nor left without direction.
  • You were created for a relationship with the Absolute,
  • and everything else in life finds meaning through that.
This short verse embodies one of the greatest universal truths. Indeed, to fully understand this truth it is necessary for human life on earth to be set on the right track. This applies in equal measure to the life of the individual, the community and all humanity throughout history. Understanding this truth opens up a whole host of concepts and meanings. The first point in this truth is that there is a clear objective for the existence of humans and jinn on earth. This objective is represented in a task: whoever fulfils it achieves the objective of his existence, and whoever neglects it leads a life without purpose or objective. He who neglects it thus breaks away from the law that applied to him when he came into existence, and he ends in utter loss. This task which binds humans and jinn to the law of the universe is worship or servitude to God. Thus, there will be a servant who worships and a Lord who is worshipped. Man's life is thus set aright on this basis.

An effort has been made to list down directional points to ponder over and learn the true meaning of the verse quoted above and reflecting deep on worship of Allah by knowing Allah more and how can we inject love of Allah in every act of our, for every act with God consciousness is what this verse desires of us.
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.
وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

Note: When we mention God in our posts, we mean One True God, we call Allah in Islam, with no associates. Allah is the Sole Creator of all things, and that Allah is all-powerful and all-knowing. Allah has no offspring, no race, no gender, no body, and is unaffected by the characteristics of human life.

An effort has been made to gather explanation / exegesis of the surahs and selected verses of Al-Qurʾān from authentic sources and then present a least possible condensed explanation of the surah. In that the exegesis of the chapters of the Quran is mainly based on the "Tafhim al-Qur'an - The Meaning of the Qur'an" by one of the most enlightened scholars of the Muslim World Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi.
In addition, other sources which have been explored and views of other scholars have been incorporated while explaining meaning of a verse. Those desirous of detailed explanations and tafsir (exegesis), may refer to these sites. For expansion of meaning and themes / contextual background help from ChatGPT is also taken.
