99 Attributes of Allah: Al-Muta'āli - The Supremely Exalted

Al-Muta'āli " ٱلْمُتَعَالِي " is yet another powerful attribute of Allah which means The Supremely Exalted above all creations, The Most High.

عٰلِمُ الۡغَيۡبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ الۡكَبِيۡرُ الۡمُتَعَالِ‏
"He knows both what is hidden and what is manifest. He is the Supreme One, the Most High." (Surah 13 Ar Ra'd: 9)

Allah is the one Who is  Supremely Exalted for there is none beyond Him nor anyone can dare to equate with Him for He is the Most High, Incomparable. It is only He who has the power to create and control what has been created. Any deity or even a prophet has no power to take control of anything that Allah, the Al-Muta'āli has created:

"O people, a parable is set forth: pay heed to it. Those who call upon aught other than Allah shall never be able to create even a fly, even if all of them were to come together to do that. And if the fly were to snatch away anything from them, they would not be able to recover that from it. Powerless is the supplicant; and powerless is he to whom he supplicates." (Surah 22 Al Hajj: 73)

This parable has been cited to impress upon the idol-worshipers and the disbelievers that their deities are absolutely powerless, for even if they all collaborated to create an insignificant thing like a fly, they could not; nay, even if a fly snatched away anything from them they could not prevent it. This shows how weak they themselves are and how powerless are the idols they supplicate.

Even though every corner of the universe manifests Allah's greatness, this vast manifestation is not sufficient to explain His infinite power and greatness. Allah is exalted above any partnership, defects, and limits. He is the sole Owner of all beautiful names and superior attributes. His knowledge, wisdom, might, power, mercy, compassion, and generosity is infinite.

Al-Muta'āli takes it root from ayn-laam-waaw which in classical Arabic mean: (1) to be high, elevated, lofty, (2) to be exalted, to rise up, to ascend, (3) to be higher to exceed, surpass, (4) to overcome, overwhelm, (5) to advance, promote, rise above, and (6) to mount, be eminent. This root appears 70 times in the Quran in fourteen derived forms. Examples of these forms are ‘aaliyatin (elevated), al-‘ulyaa (the highest), fata’aalayna (“then come”) and la’aali (“a tyrant”).

Linguistically, uloow points to the attribute of loftiness and a person is ‘alee when he is prominent. The names Al Muta'āli and Al-‘Alī— meaning “Allah is the highest, above any fault, above any imperfection”— are interrelated.

We are always in the habit of placing ourselves over the other whether due to our wealth or education or place due to superiority of clan. But we utterly forget and are mistaken in our false pride for we cannot do anything except through the power of Al-Muta'āli. as has already been explained in the verse quoted above which explains a parable of a fly, man is so meek and low that he cannot even do a damn if something of him is taken away by a creature as small as a fly.

Allah created you, then provides for you, then will cause you to die, and then will bring you back to life. Can any of your partner-deities do any of that? Glory be to Him, and may He be exalted above anything they associate with Him! ( Surat ar-Rum, 30:40)
For every good, we are solely dependent on Al-Muta'āli, whether it is our belief, taqwa or righteousness.  Mankind! We created you from a male and female, and made you into peoples and tribes so that you might come to know each other. The noblest among you in Allah´s sight is the one with the most taqwa [Quran, 49:13] Never place yourself above others because of your wealth, intelligence, looks, or your lineage!

The recent outbreak of Corona Virus and helplessness of the entire mankind all over the world shows the power fullness of Al-Muta'āli - despite all modern advancements in science and medicine, man is helpless as so far almost 200,000 corona virus affected have perished and 2.5 million are waiting for a vaccine to cure them from this deadly disease. And perhaps fro the first time, man has forgotten about everything and all over the world people are supplicating and prostrating in front of the Al-Muta'āli to forgive them and save them from this deadly disease.

May Allah, Al-Muta'āli, always be on our side and forgive our sins for we cannot ever equate His unlimited powers and be at our own. May Allah forgive us of our misdeeds and sins and always keep us under His Fold, well protected from all ills and diseases. Aameen.
