The Reward of being part of a gathering where Allah's name is being invoked (Hadith Qudsi)

Hadith Qudsi are those Hadiths attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ which in fact are pure revelations from Allah but have been mentioned by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to his companions in his own words.  In fact, these special Hadiths convey to the believers some specific actions that they should take so as to be blessed by Allah.

Today we share a Hadith Qudsi in which the importance of sitting in gatherings where name and attributes of Allah are being invoked. Those who are part of such gatherings, even a wayfarer who just stops and sits there for a while, will have special blessings of Allah for Allah loves his servants exalting Him en masse.

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (ﷺ), who said:
Allah (glorified and exalted be He) has supernumerary angels who rove about seeking out gatherings in which Allah's name is being invoked: they sit with them and fold their wings round each other, filling that which is between them and between the lowest heaven. When [the people in the gathering] depart, [the angels] ascend and rise up to heaven. He (the Prophet (ﷺ)) said:
  • Then Allah (mighty and sublime be He) asks them - [though] He is most knowing about them: From where have you come?
    • And they say: We have come from some servants of Yours on Earth: they were glorifying You (Subhanallah سبحان الله ), exalting you (Allahu Akbar الله أكبر), witnessing that there is no god but You (La ilaha illallah لآ اِلَهَ اِلّا اللّهُ ), praising You (Al-Hamdu Lillah ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّٰهِ), and asking [favours] of You.
  • He says: And what do they ask of Me?
    • They say: They ask of You Your Paradise.
  • He says: And have they seen My Paradise?
    • They say: No, O Lord.
  • He says: And how would it be were they to have seen My Paradise!
    • They say: And they ask protection of You.
  • He says: From what do they ask protection of Me?
    • They say: From Your Hell-fire, O Lord.
  • He says: And have they seen My Hell-fire?
    • They say: NO.
  • He says: And how would it be were they to have seen My Hell-fire:
    • They say: And they ask for Your forgiveness.
He (the Prophet (ﷺ)) said: Then He says: I have forgiven them and I have bestowed upon them that they have asked for, and I have granted them sanctuary from that from which they asked protection.

He (the Prophet ﷺ) said: They say: O Lord, among them is So-and-so, a much sinning servant, who was merely passing by and sat down with them. He (the Prophet ﷺ) said: And He says: And to him [too] I have given forgiveness: he who sits with such people shall not suffer.

It was related by Muslim (also by al-Bukhari, at-Tirmidhi, and an-Nasa'i).

We will not go into explaining this self-explanatory Hadith Qudsi except that we should find time out of our daily routines and sit with people who are invoking Allah for His pleasure only and seeking forgiveness.
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

Note: When we mention God in our posts, we mean One True God, we call Allah in Islam, with no associates. Allah is the Sole Creator of all things, and that Allah is all-powerful and all-knowing. Allah has no offspring, no race, no gender, no body, and is unaffected by the characteristics of human life.

Seek guidance, sustenance and forgiveness from Allah alone and don't be of the oppressors (Hadith Qudsi)

There are forty Hadiths attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ which are labelled as Hadith Qudsi. We have already shared five of these, here is the sixth one.

Just to refresh our knowledge about these forty special Hadiths, as already done in our previous posts, hereinunder is the explanation of Hadith Qudsi:
Hadith Qudsi is a narration from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ which is supposed to be from Allah (SWT) in its meanings and from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) in its wordings. Hadith Qudsi is not like Qur'an because the whole Qur'an is absolutely authentic and every letter in Qur'an is from Allah the Glorious in the meaning and the words, while Hadith Qudsi is a narration which must be authentic and if it is proves authentic, then the meanings is from Allah but the wordings is from Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

The Hadith Qudsi selected for today's post has been reported by Abu Dharr who recalls Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying that Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, said:

"O My servants, I have forbidden oppression for Myself and have made it forbidden amongst you, so do not oppress one another. O My servants, all of you are astray except for those I have guided, so seek guidance of Me and I shall guide you, O My servants, all of you are hungry except for those I have fed, so seek food of Me and I shall feed you. O My servants, all of you are naked except for those I have clothed, so seek clothing of Me and I shall clothe you. O My servants, you sin by night and by day, and I forgive all sins, so seek forgiveness of Me and I shall forgive you. O My servants, you will not attain harming Me so as to harm Me, and will not attain benefitting Me so as to benefit Me. O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you to be as pious as the most pious heart of any one man of you, that would not increase My dominion in anything. O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you to be as wicked as the most wicked heart of any one man of you, that would not decrease My dominion in anything. O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you to rise up in one place and make a request of Me, and were I to give everyone what he requested, that would not decrease what I have, any more that a needle decreases the sea if put into it. O My servants, it is but your deeds that I record for you and then recompense you for. So let him who finds good, praise Allah, and let him who finds other than that blame no one but himself."

Sa'id said that when Abu Idris Khaulini narrated this hadith he knelt upon his knees.

This is rather long but very comprehensive and self-explanatory Hadith, which if implement and acted upon in true spirit, can change our otherwise misdirected life into a life as Allah has want us to live. Just scroll down and read each part of the Hadith one by one and very carefully analyze yourselves whether you really have faith in Allah and believe that it is only Allah alone who can answer your prayers or you have worldly gods who help you. If you really understand this moot point, your entire life will change altogether, In Sha Allah.

Now let us start one by one: The Hadith seemingly has two parts. In the first part Allah encourages His servants to seek their wishes from Him, for He alone is the sustainer and the provider, saying O My Servants:
  • I have forbidden oppression for Myself and have made it forbidden amongst you, so do not oppress one another
  • All of you are astray except for those I have guided, so seek guidance of Me and I shall guide you
  • All of you are hungry except for those I have fed, so seek food from Me and I shall feed you
  • All of you are naked except for those I have clothed, so seek clothing of Me and I shall clothe you
  • You sin by night and by day, and I forgive all sins, so seek forgiveness of Me and I shall forgive you.
The second part of the Hadith is a warning for those who challenge the Divine Authority. This part clears their doubts for Allah does not need anyone's favours for He is above everything and it is in fact men (and jinn) who need Allah. It is being said, O My servants:
  • You will not attain harming Me so as to harm Me, and will not attain benefiting Me so as to benefit Me.
  • Were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you to be as pious as the most pious heart of any one man of you, that would not increase My dominion in anything.
  • Were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you to be as wicked as the most wicked heart of any one man of you, that would not decrease My dominion in anything.
  • Were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you to rise up in one place and make a request of Me, and were I to give everyone what he requested, that would not decrease what I have, any more that a needle decreases the sea if put into it.
Concluding, it is reminded: O My servants, it is but your deeds that I record for you and then recompense you for. So let him who finds good, praise Allah, and let him who finds other than that blame no one but himself.

Spend in charity as Allah spends on you ceaselessly (Hadith Qudsi)

Charity is one of the important economic balancers in Islam. No two men are blessed equally. Rather most are under privileged and need our help to sustain their lives with dignity. The concept of charity (both obligatory, that is Zakat, and voluntary, that is Sadaqat) ensures the sustenance of the Have Nots.

Despite the importance of charity, there are some who can afford to dole out a handsome amount to help others, yet squeeze their hands for the fear of running out of their coffers. For such parsimonious people, we share a Hadith Qudsi in which Prophet Muhammad ﷺ shares a direct caution for such people and tells them to spend in charity as Allah spends on them ceaselessly.

This Hadith is mentioned in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī  (Book 97 Oneness, Uniqueness of Allah (Tawheed) كتاب التوحيد/ Chapter 19: “. To one whom I have created with Both My Hands…” باب قَوْلِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى ‏{‏لِمَا خَلَقْتُ بِيَدَىَّ‏}‏) as Hadith 7411, given herein under (Grade: Muttafaqun Alayhi / Agreed upon, as also reported in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim as 993a):

Narrated by Abu Huraira:

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Allah's Hand is full, and (its fullness) is not affected by the continuous spending, day and night." He also said, "Do you see what He has spent since He created the Heavens and the Earth? Yet all that has not decreased what is in His Hand." He also said, "His Throne is over the water and in His other Hand is the balance (of Justice) and He raises and lowers (whomever He will)."

So let us not squeeze our hands when it comes to helping others and give out in charity as much as we can so as to please Allah for He never squeezes His hands when showering His countless blessings on us.
Allah promises Ultimate Reward for the righteous slaves (Al Hadith ul Qudsi)

Allah, the Lord of the entire universe, has given the man two choices to choose from while in his worldly life: The hard life of tests and trials with its ultimate reward in the life of the Hereafter, and the life of amusement and lewdness in this earthly world with severe retribution in the life of the hereafter. Those who choose the latter form are generally seen joyous, merrily living their lives and in a state of immense amusement. These people are often envied by many who cannot afford a luxurious life with no worries and amusement. But the men of faith and the true and righteous slaves of Allah know that the illusions of this world have no meaning to them for their reward of curbing their desires and taking the harder tests in this life for they have been promised a much luxurious life that one cannot even dream of.

This life of comfort and luxury is such that man's shallow vision cannot even perceive what reward is in waiting in the life of Hereafter as has been promised in the 17th verse of Surah 32. As-Sajda. This in fact is a reference to the eternal kingdom which the righteous will receive as a reward for the few days of effort they put in.:
(32:17) No one knows what delights of the eyes are kept hidden for them as a reward for their deeds.
Yusuf Ali in his explanation of the verse terms Delights of the eye as an idiom for that which pleases most and gives most satisfaction. In our present state we can scarcely imagine the real Bliss that will come to us in the Future.

Muhammad Asad notes that literary "what is kept hidden for them [by way] of a joy of the eyes", i.e., of blissful delights, irrespective of whether seen, heard or felt. The expression "what is kept hidden for them" clearly alludes to the unknowable - and, therefore, only allegorically describable - quality of life in the hereafter. The impossibility of man's really "imagining" paradise has been summed up by the Prophet in the well-authenticated hadith: "God says: 'I have readied for My righteous servants what no eye has ever seen, and no ear has ever heard, and no heart of man has ever conceived'" (Bukhari and Muslim, on the authority of Abu Hurayrah; also, Tirmidhi).

The same promise has been mentioned in a Hadith ul Qudsi, as mentioned in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī  (Book 97 Oneness, Uniqueness of Allah (Tawheed) كتاب التوحيد / Chapter 35: “…They want to change Allah’s Words….” باب قَوْلِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى ‏{‏يُرِيدُونَ أَنْ يُبَدِّلُوا كَلاَمَ اللَّهِ}) as Hadith 7498, reproduced herein under:

Narrated by Abu Huraira:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Allah said, "I have prepared for My righteous slaves (such excellent things) as no eye has ever seen, nor an ear has ever heard nor a human heart can ever think of.' "

The Grade of this Hadith is "Muttafaqun Alayhi", for this also appears in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim in Book Sahi Muslim, Chapter 52 (The Book of Paradise, Its Description, Its Bounties and Its Inhabitants), Baab: Jannat Aur Is Ki Naimatein Awr Ehl E Jannat as Hadith number 7132.

Besides Bukhari, Muslim (as mentioned above), Tirmidhi and Imam Ahmad have in different ways cited on the authority of Abu Hurairah that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Allah says: I have made ready for My righteous servants that which has neither been seen by the eye, nor heard by the ear, nor ever conceived by any man.” The same thing has been reported with a little difference in wording by Abu Said Khudri, Mughirah bin Shubah and Sahl bin Saad asSaidi from the Prophet (peace be upon him) and related with authentic links by Muslim. Ahmed, Ibn Jarir and Tirmidhi.

So, believers, and even non-Muslims reading this post, be happy if you have chosen the righteous, yet the harder life, to please Allah and mock the Satan for he must be feeling helpless not having brought you in his evil fold and seeing you slipping away from his life of lust and lewdness. Let us all remain steadfast and anxiously wait for the immense reward that awaits us in the life of Hereafter, something that we in this world cannot even perceive of.

Reward of Fasting (Hadith Qudsi Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

Intermittent fasting has become a modern trend to keep oneself in shape and healthy - an act purely on a medical basis and physical fitness. But fasting purely to please Allah has altogether a different dimension. Fasting for Allah means abstaining from every Halal thing during the duration of the fasting period, not for personal fitness and health reasons, but only to please Allah.

Saum / fasting assumes an important place in the five-founding pillar of Islam:
  • Profession of Faith (shahada). The belief that "There is no god but God, and Muhammad is the Messenger of God" is central to Islam
  • Prayer (salat). Muslims pray facing Mecca five times a day: at dawn, noon, mid-afternoon, sunset, and after dark
  • Zakat (Obligatory Charity)
  • Sawm صَوْم (Fasting)
  • Hajj (Pilgrimage)
Sawm is directly stated in the Quran saying: “Eat and drink until the whiteness of the day becomes distinct from the blackness of the night at dawn, then complete the fast till night…”. The fast occurs from dawn to sunset each day during which time believers are expected to prohibit themselves from any food, drink, sexual intercourse, or smoking. However, after sunset and before dawn, individuals can participate in any of the actions previously stated as they desire.

Since one abstains from Halal things purely to please Allah, Allah has Himself promised that the reward of fasting will be awarded by Him, mainly for this reason that a believer abstains from otherwise Halal things, though still accessible to him, for Allah. Therefore, when we fast, we must make sure that we do it to please Allah and not as a show off to appear pious in the eyes of others.

This importance of fasting and its reward by Allah has been mentioned as * Hadith Qudsi in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī  (Book 30 Fasting (Al-Adab) كتاب الصوم / Chapter 9: Should one say, "I am observing Saum (fast)" on being abused? باب هَلْ يَقُولُ إِنِّي صَائِمٌ إِذَا شُتِمَِ) as Hadith 1904 (Grade: Muttafaqun Alayhi متفق عليه - (authenticity agreed upon) according to Al-Bukhari and Muslim).

* Hadith Qudsi is a narration from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ which is supposed to be from Allah (SWT) in its meanings and from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) in its wordings.

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Allah said, 'All the deeds of Adam's sons (people) are for them, except fasting which is for Me, and I will give the reward for it.' Fasting is a shield or protection from fire and from committing sins. If one of you is fasting, he should avoid sexual relations with his wife and quarreling, and if somebody should fight or quarrel with him, he should say, 'I am fasting.' By Him in Whose Hands my soul is' The unpleasant smell coming out from the mouth of a fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the smell of musk. There are two pleasures for the fasting person, one at the time of breaking his fast, and the other at the time when he will meet his Lord; then he will be pleased because of his fasting."

Let us fast to please Allah alone for we will be rewarded exclusively by Allah on the Day of Resurrection.
The virtue of the NIGHT Prayer تهجد

In our series of posts on Hadiths of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, we share yet another Hadit, called Hadith Qudsi which is about the night prayer. But before do that, let us say what Hadith Qudsi is and how it differs from ordinary Hadiths of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ:

Hadith Qudsi is a narration from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ which is supposed to be from Allah (SWT) in its meanings and from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) in its wordings. Hadith Qudsi is not like Qur'an because the whole Qur'an is absolutely authentic and every letter in Qur'an is from Allah the Glorious in the meaning and the words, while Hadith Qudsi is a narration which must be authentic and if it is proves authentic, then the meanings is from Allah but the wordings is from Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Now coming over to the Hadith Qudsi selected for this post which is narrated by Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him:

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) (p.b.u.h) said, "Our Lord, the Blessed, the Superior, comes every night down on the nearest Heaven to us when the last third of the night remains, saying: "Is there anyone to invoke Me, so that I may respond to invocation? Is there anyone to ask Me, so that I may grant him his request? Is there anyone seeking My forgiveness, so that I may forgive him?"

From the wordings of the Hadith, the importance of the Night Prayer (Tahajjad) is amply highlighted. It is the time when a man, dead tired from a hard day's work, elects to get up voluntarily and offers the Tahajjad salat. The darkness of night with all its quietness provides just the right kind of environment in which a man can "talk" to his Creator and can invoke Him as much as he can to be blessed and his worries redressed. So let us make a habit of getting up before it is time for the pre-dawn prayer, Fajr, and ask for forgiveness and blessings.

[This Hadith Qudsi has been mentioned in Sahih al-Bukhari (Book 19   Prayer at Night (Tahajjud) كتاب التهجد / Chapter 14: Offering Salat (prayer) and invoking Allah in the last hours of the night باب الدُّعَاءِ وَالصَّلاَةِ مِنْ آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ/) as Hadith 1145]
We have not been made responsible to make you accept it forcibly, And if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, You will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Charity: The Virtue of Visiting the Sick (Hadith Qudsi)

Charity is one of the most noble things that a believer can do and help his brethren to ease their lives. Normally we take charity in terms of food, money or any means of sustenance to the poor and needy. But charity has a vast context in Islam.

Today we share a Hadith Qudsi, a collection of about forty hadiths the source of which is none other Allah Almighty Himself.  A question arises if the revelation is from Allah, why isn't it included in the Qur'an. So let us understand what is a Hadith a Qudsi really is:
Hadith Qudsi or Hadith Qudse (Arabic: الحديث القدسي, meaning "pure" or "holy Hadith") is a special category of Hadith, the compendium of sayings attributed to the Islamic prophet Muhammad. It is stated these Hadiths are unique because their content is attributed to God but the actual wording was credited to Muhammad. This may be one of the reasons they are not included in the Quranic revelations, which are considered to be the verbatim word of God but rather are given a special category, thus occupying a status between Quran and normal Hadith text.

With this description and differentiation between Hadith Qudsi and a Prophetic Hadith, let us share one of the forty Hadith Qudsi on the subject of charity. By going through the Hadith, the reader will automatically know the language in a directive form, the source of which can be no one else by Allah Almighty Himself:

This Hadith Qudsi is mentioned in the Sahi Bokhari volume: The Book of Virtue, Enjoining Good Manners, and Joining of the Ties of Kinship ( كتاب البر والصلة والآداب ) in the 13th Chapter: The Virtue of Visiting the Sick ( باب فَضْلِ عِيَادَةِ الْمَرِيضِ ) Hadith 2569:

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:

"Verily, Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, would say on the Day of Resurrection: O son of Adam, I was sick but you did not visit Me. He would say: O my Lord; how could I visit Thee whereas Thou art the Lord of the worlds? Thereupon He would say: Didn't you know that such and such servant of Mine was sick but you did not visit him and were you not aware of this that if you had visited him, you would have found Me by him? O son of Adam, I asked food from you but you did not feed Me. He would say: My Lord, how could I feed Thee whereas Thou art the Lord of the worlds? He said: Didn't you know that such and such servant of Mine asked food from you but you did not feed him, and were you not aware that if you had fed him you would have found him by My side? (The Lord would again say: ) O son of Adam, I asked drink from you but you did not provide Me. He would say: My Lord, how could I provide Thee whereas Thou art the Lord of the worlds? Thereupon He would say: Such and such of servant of Mine asked you for a drink but you did not provide him, and had you provided him drink you would have found him near Me."

This Hadith carries a special significance on the subject of Charity wherein Allah clearly spells out the importance of Charity which we more often than not relegate for our own needs. Here even visiting a sick amount to charity, an action we more often than not skip and do not visit the sick. In addition to this kind of charity, feeding the hungry and providing drink to the thirsty also fall under the ambit of charity.

Let us be mindful of our duty in respect to the sick, hungry and the thirsty and help them as much as we can.
