Supplication attributed to Prophet ʿĪsā (Jesus) عیسٰی عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ as mentioned in Al Qur'an

AL Qur'an, the last of the Divine Scripturas from the Lord of the World, mentions supplications from many a eminent and prominent of prophets chosen by Allah, a number of which we have already published in our blog. Today, we share an invocation attributed to Prophet Eesa (Jesus, may peace be upon him) which he along with his trusted disciples made to the One True God, affirming that they believed in the God and that they may be counted among those who believed and bore witness.

This invocation is mentioned in Āyah 53 of Sūrah Āl ʿImrān (3:53) whcih we will discuss along with the context, meaning, and its lessons for us today.

Arabic Text (Surah Āl ʿImrān 3:53):

رَبَّنَا آمَنَّا بِمَا أَنْزَلْتَ وَاتَّبَعْنَا الرَّسُولَ فَاكْتُبْنَا مَعَ الشَّاهِدِينَ
Translation (Meaning)
Our Lord, we have believed in what You revealed and followed the Messenger, so write us down among those who bear witness.” (Qur’an 3:53)

Context of Revelation
This verse comes as part of the story of Prophet ʿĪsā (Jesus) عليه السلام and his disciples (al-Ḥawāriyyūn). Prophet ʿĪsā was sent to the Children of Israel with clear miracles and divine guidance. But when Prophet ʿĪsā became conscious of their rejection of the faith, he asked: “Who will be my helpers in the cause of God?” [ This was the stage when many of his people rejected him and plotted against him. But a small group — his true disciples — responded to his call with faith and sincerity.] This when asked for the allegiance, the loyal disciples replied: “We are [your] helpers in God’s cause. We believe in God. Bear you witness that we have surrendered ourselves to Him. Our Lord, we believe in what You have bestowed from on high, and we follow the messenger, so write us down among those who bear witness [to the truth].” (Verses 52-53)

In the verse just before this (3:52), in verse 52 Allah says:

“But when ʿĪsā sensed disbelief from them, he said, ‘Who are my helpers in the cause of Allah?’ The disciples said, ‘We are Allah’s helpers; we believe in Allah, and bear witness that we are Muslims (submit to Him).’”

Then, in verse 53, they turn directly to Allah with this heartfelt duʿā — affirming their faith and asking Allah to count them among the witnesses to truth.

Detailed Explanation (Tafsīr)
1. رَبَّنَا آمَنَّا بِمَا أَنْزَلْتَ “Our Lord, we have believed in what You revealed…”
  • This is a declaration of īmān (faith) in Allah’s revelation — in the Injīl (Gospel) that Allah revealed to Prophet ʿĪsā, and by extension, belief in all divine scriptures.
  • They are acknowledging that guidance only comes from Allah and that whatever He reveals is the truth.
  • Lesson: True believers submit wholeheartedly to Allah’s revelation — not picking and choosing, but accepting His message in full.
2. وَاتَّبَعْنَا الرَّسُولَ “And we followed the Messenger…”
  • They declare that their faith is not only verbal, but shown through obedience — following the Messenger of Allah (ʿĪsā عليه السلام). 
  • Faith without action is incomplete; true īmān requires following the messenger sent by Allah.
  • Lesson: Every believer must follow their Prophet’s example — and for us, that means following the teachings and Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ faithfully.
3. فَاكْتُبْنَا مَعَ الشَّاهِدِينَ “So record us among those who bear witness.”
They ask Allah to include them among the shāhidīn (witnesses) — those who:
  • Bear witness to the truth of Allah’s Oneness (Tawḥīd),
  • Bear witness to the truth of His prophets, and
  • Will testify on the Day of Judgment that they believed and lived by the truth.
According to Tafsir Ibn Kathīr, the disciples prayed to be among those who would testify to the truth of all prophets — including Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, whose coming ʿĪsā had foretold (see 61:6).
So this duʿā also contains a longing for unity with all true believers across time.
  • Lesson: Muslims should also desire to be counted among those who bear witness — by living Islam, speaking truth, and defending it with sincerity.
Spiritual Lessons from the Verse
  • True faith includes both belief and action:
    • The disciples said: “We have believed and followed.”
    • Faith in the heart must be reflected in obedience in life.
  • The believers are always few, but sincere. Just like the disciples of ʿĪsā, those who truly stand for truth may be few — yet Allah honors them eternally.
  • Prayer strengthens faith. After declaring belief, they supplicate — asking Allah for firmness and acceptance. This shows humility and recognition that faith needs divine support.
  • We must strive to be witnesses of truth. Not just by words, but by living as examples of honesty, justice, and submission to Allah.
  • Unity of the prophetic message. This verse beautifully connects the followers of ʿĪsā and the followers of Muhammad ﷺ — all sincere believers share the same creed: submission to Allah.
Practical Reflection (for Us Today)
You can recite this verse as a duʿā to renew your īmān and commitment:

رَبَّنَا آمَنَّا بِمَا أَنْزَلْتَ وَاتَّبَعْنَا الرَّسُولَ فَاكْتُبْنَا مَعَ الشَّاهِدِينَ
“Our Lord, we have believed in what You revealed and followed the Messenger; so write us down among those who bear witness.”

Say it with sincerity — meaning: “O Allah, I believe in Your Book, I follow Your Messenger (Muhammad ﷺ), so count me among those who testify to the truth and live by it.”

It is a prayer worthy of careful study by everyone who claim to surrender himself to God. This is indeed the meaning of Islam as understood by the disciples and as understood by true Muslims, who actually surrender themselves to God. Anyone who suppresses his testimony and is reluctant to give it in favour of his religion is a sinner at heart. If he claims to be a Muslim but chooses a lifestyle other than that of Islam, or tries to live according to Islam within his own private life but not in the generality of this social life, or does not strive to establish a Divine method in the life of his society either to evade hardship or to spare his own life at the cost of his faith, then he is one who does not give full testimony to this religion, or, indeed, he gives a testimony against it. In so doing, he makes a testimony which deters others from accepting this faith. Can we contemplate the fate of a person who deters others from accepting the Divine faith through his own claim that he is a believer when actually he is not?

No invocation / supplication or even simple verse in Qur'an is without reflection by the believers. We must ponder over each, and try to be close to Allah by remembering Him in the same words that revered prophets of Allah remembered Him. And if these invocations are made with utter sincerity, let there be no doubt that these will not be accepted by Allah.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

Our Lord! forgive us our sins, wipe out our evil deeds and make us die with the truly pious

Blessed are those who listened to the call of the prophets of Allah and bring faith on the Divine commandments.  And how ungrateful are those who did not pay any attention to what prophets of Allah were saying or calling them to the path of ultimate truth. And even more ungrateful are those who listened to the call of the prophets but then drifted away from the guidance given to them by Allah and made innovations in the Holy Scriptures to suit their own requirements and lust. 

Here in this verse from Surah 3. Al-i'Imran, is the expression of gratitude by those believers who not only listened to the call of Prophet of Allah and believed in him too.

رَبَّنَاۤ اِنَّنَا سَمِعۡنَا مُنَادِيًا يُّنَادِىۡ لِلۡاِيۡمَانِ اَنۡ اٰمِنُوۡا بِرَبِّكُمۡ فَاٰمَنَّا  ۖ رَبَّنَا فَاغۡفِرۡ لَنَا ذُنُوۡبَنَا وَكَفِّرۡ عَنَّا سَيِّاٰتِنَا وَتَوَفَّنَا مَعَ الۡاَبۡرَارِ​ۚ‏ 
"Our Lord! Indeed we heard a crier calling to the faith saying: "Believe in your Lord"; so we did believe. Our Lord, forgive us our sins, and wipe out our evil deeds and make us die with the truly pious.'" (Surah 3 Al-i'Imran: 193) 

These believers are those who, unlike the pagans and disbelievers of Makkah, did not demand miracles nor did insist on silly arguments and in fact the mere person of the prophet was no less than a miracle in their eyes; so when they saw that this call of professing faith in Allah and the Hereafter is the call of their own hearts and inner self, they bear witness to it and knowledge and intellect also demand it, and accepted it without any hesitation.

Such are the believers who call on to their Lord, and pray that they be wiped of any remnants of evil that reside in them and that they be forgiven and live a life as taught by the Prophet of Allah in the light of Divine Commandments. And their ultimate is to die as truly pious and blessed servants of Allah.

Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:
These hearts are open. They only need to receive the message in order to respond to it. Their sensitivity is enhanced. The first thing impressed on their minds is the fact that they commit sins and may be guilty of disobedience. Hence, they turn to their Lord, praying for His forgiveness and for their bad deeds to be effaced. They also pray to be grouped with the righteous when they die.
 
The message of this verses fits in with the message of the rest of the sūrah. The believers pray to God to forgive them their sins so that they can win their continuous battle against desire and temptation. Achieving victory in this battle is akin to victory in a military battle against the enemies of God and the enemies of faith. Thus the sūrah is a whole unit, each part complementing the other, and delivering a complete and harmonious message.

We need to take a self appraisal and lookout for signs of ungratefulness or evil residing in us and let these me thrown out to have  pure and clean heart so that our supplications are heeded to and our repentance accepted and our sins, misdeeds and evil doings forgiven before death begets us. Let us always make this innovation that our heavenly abode is with the forgiven and most pious. Ameen

    Rabbana “رَبَّنَا“ Supplications (Dua / دُعا) in Qur’an

    We have been sharing supplications / invocations / prayers or simply (Dua / دُعا) from Qur'an and Hadiths of Prophet in our previous posts. Through this reference page, we share supplications that commence with prefix Rabbana “رَبَّنَا“, that Our Lord, which have been mentioned forty times in Qur'an and are mostly the supplications made by the prophets and messengers. These Rabbana “رَبَّنَا“ specific supplications cover a wide range of requests made by the servants to their Lord in times of repression, need for some worldly sustenance, protections from tyrants and demagogues, or seeking justice when human justice fails them. These supplications also ask for mercy and forgiveness when one commits and sin and repents and then seek from protection from the hellfire of Jahannam, the Hell, and grant of Jannah, the Paradise.

    The beauty of these supplications is that these have been put in the mouth of prophets, messengers and ordinary men by none other than the Lord of the Heavens and the Universe. Thus, these are not only very well meaning, comprehensive and befitting to the different situations one may be in.

    We have already shared many of these forty Rabbana “رَبَّنَا“ series supplications, which have been highlighted in blue so that a click on the highlighted text takes the reader to the explanation of the particular supplication. We will, In Sha Allah, keep on adding explanation of the remaining supplications in time.

    رَبَّنَا تَقَبَّلۡ مِنَّآۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلۡعَلِيمُ
    “Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing.” [Surah 2. Al-Baqara:127]

    “Our Lord, and make us Muslims [in submission] to You and from our descendants a Muslim nation [in submission] to You. And show us our rites [of worship] and accept our repentance. Indeed, You are the Accepting of Repentance, the Merciful.” [Surah 2. Al-Baqara:128]

    رَبَّنَا وَابۡعَثۡ فِيۡهِمۡ رَسُوۡلًا مِّنۡهُمۡ يَتۡلُوۡا عَلَيۡهِمۡ اٰيٰتِكَ وَيُعَلِّمُهُمُ الۡكِتٰبَ وَالۡحِكۡمَةَ وَ يُزَكِّيۡهِمۡ​ؕ اِنَّكَ اَنۡتَ الۡعَزِيۡزُ الۡحَكِيۡمُ
    Our Lord! Raise up in the midst of our offspring a Messenger from among them who shall recite to them Your verses, and instruct them in the Book and in Wisdom, and purify their lives. Verily, You are the Most Mighty, the Most Wise.” [Surah 2. Al-Baqara:129]

    “Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.” [Surah 2. Al-Baqara:201]

    رَبَّنَآ أَفۡرِغۡ عَلَيۡنَا صَبۡرٗا وَثَبِّتۡ أَقۡدَامَنَا وَٱنصُرۡنَا عَلَى ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ
    “Our Lord, pour upon us patience and plant firmly our feet and give us victory over the disbelieving people.” [Surah 2. Al-Baqara:250]

    “Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred.” [Surah 2. Al-Baqara:286]

    رَبَّنَا وَلَا تَحۡمِلۡ عَلَيۡنَآ إِصۡرٗا كَمَا حَمَلۡتَهُۥ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبۡلِنَاۚ
    “Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us.” [Surah 2. Al-Baqara:286]

    رَبَّنَا وَلَا تُحَمِّلۡنَا مَا لَا طَاقَةَ لَنَا بِهِۦۖ وَٱعۡفُ عَنَّا وَٱغۡفِرۡ لَنَا وَٱرۡحَمۡنَآۚ أَنتَ مَوۡلَىٰنَا فَٱنصُرۡنَا عَلَى ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ
    “Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people.” 
    [Surah 2. Al-Baqara:286]

    *Note; The above quoted three supplications, being part of the same 286th verse of Surah 2. Al Baqarah, have been combined.

    “Our Lord, let not our hearts deviate after You have guided us and grant us from Yourself mercy. Indeed, You are the Bestower.” [Surah 3. Al-i'Imran:8]

    رَبَّنَآ إِنَّكَ جَامِعُ ٱلنَّاسِ لِيَوْمٍ لَّا رَيْبَ فِيهِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يُخْلِفُ ٱلْمِيعَادَ
    “Our Lord, surely You will gather the people for a Day about which there is no doubt. Indeed, Allah does not fail in His promise.” [Surah 3. Al-i'Imran:9]

    “Our Lord, indeed we have believed, so forgive us our sins and protect us from the punishment of the Fire” [Surah 3. Al-i'Imran:16]

    “Our Lord, we have believed in what You revealed and have followed the messenger [i.e., Jesus], so register us among the witnesses [to truth].” [Surah 3. Al-i'Imran:53]

    رَبَّنَا ٱغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَإِسْرَافَنَا فِىٓ أَمْرِنَا وَثَبِّتْ أَقْدَامَنَا وَٱنصُرْنَا عَلَى ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ
    “Our Lord, forgive us our sins and the excess [committed] in our affairs and plant firmly our feet and give us victory over the disbelieving people.” [Surah 3. Al-i'Imran:147]

    رَبَّنَا مَا خَلَقْتَ هَٰذَا بَٰطِلًا سُبْحَٰنَكَ فَقِنَا عَذَابَ ٱلنَّارِ
    “Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire.” [Surah 3. Al-i'Imran:191]

    رَبَّنَآ إِنَّكَ مَن تُدْخِلِ ٱلنَّارَ فَقَدْ أَخْزَيْتَهُۥ ۖ وَمَا لِلظَّٰلِمِينَ مِنْ أَنصَارٍ
    “Our Lord, indeed whoever You admit to the Fire – You have disgraced him, and for the wrongdoers there are no helpers.” [Surah 3. Al-i'Imran:192]

    رَّبَّنَآ إِنَّنَا سَمِعۡنَا مُنَادِيٗا يُنَادِي لِلۡإِيمَٰنِ أَنۡ ءَامِنُواْ بِرَبِّكُمۡ فَـَٔامَنَّاۚ
    “Our Lord, indeed we have heard a caller, calling to faith, [saying], ‘Believe in your Lord,’ and we have believed.” [Surah 3. Al-i'Imran:193]

    “Our Lord, so forgive us our sins and remove from us our misdeeds and cause us to die among the righteous.” [Surah 3. Al-i'Imran:193]

    “Our Lord, and grant us what You promised us through Your messengers and do not disgrace us on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, You do not fail in [Your] promise.” [Surah 3. Al-i'Imran:194]

    رَبَّنَآ ءَامَنَّا فَٱكْتُبْنَا مَعَ ٱلشَّٰهِدِينَ
    “Our Lord, we have believed, so register us among the witnesses.” [Surah 5 Al Maida:83]

    “O Allah, our Lord, send down to us a table [spread with food] from heaven to be for us a festival for the first of us and the last of us and a sign from You. And provide for us, and You are the best of providers.” [Surah 5 Al Maida:114]

    “Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.” [Surah 7. Al A'raf:23]

    رَبَّنَا لَا تَجۡعَلۡنَا مَعَ ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ
    “Our Lord, do not place us with the wrongdoing people.” [Surah 7. Al A'raf:47]
      
    رَبَّنَا ٱفۡتَحۡ بَيۡنَنَا وَبَيۡنَ قَوۡمِنَا بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَأَنتَ خَيۡرُ ٱلۡفَٰتِحِينَ
    “Our Lord, decide between us and our people in truth, and You are the best of those who give decision.” [Surah 7. Al A'raf:89]

    “Our Lord, pour upon us patience and let us die as Muslims [in submission to You].” [Surah 7. Al A'raf:126]

    رَبَّنَا لَا تَجۡعَلۡنَا فِتۡنَةٗ لِّلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ ; وَنَجِّنَا بِرَحۡمَتِكَ مِنَ ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ
    “Our Lord, make us not [objects of] trial for the wrongdoing people. And save us by Your mercy from the disbelieving people.” [10:85-86] 

    رَبَّنَآ إِنَّكَ تَعْلَمُ مَا نُخْفِى وَمَا نُعْلِنُ ۗ وَمَا يَخْفَىٰ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ مِن شَىْءٍۢ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَا فِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ
    “Our Lord, indeed You know what we conceal and what we declare, and nothing is hidden from Allah on the earth or in the heaven.” [Surah 14 Ibraheem:38]

    “My Lord, make me an establisher of prayer, and [many] from my descendants. Our Lord, and accept my supplication.” [Surah 14 Ibraheem:40]

    “Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers the Day the account is established.” [Surah 14 Ibraheem:41]

    “Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy and prepare for us from our affair right guidance.”
    [Surah 18 Al Kahf:10]

    رَبَّنَآ إِنَّنَا نَخَافُ أَن يَفْرُطَ عَلَيْنَآ أَوْ أَن يَطْغَى
    “Our Lord, indeed we are afraid that he will hasten [punishment] against us or that he will transgress.” [Surah 20. Ta-ha:45]

    “Our Lord, we have believed, so forgive us and have mercy upon us, and You are the best of the merciful.” [Surah 23 Al Muminun:109]

    “Our Lord, avert from us the punishment of Hell. Indeed, its punishment is ever adhering; Indeed, it is evil as a settlement and residence.” [Surah 25. Al Furqan:65-66]

    “Our Lord, grant us from among our wives and offspring comfort to our eyes and make us a leader [i.e., example] for the righteous.” [Surah 25. Al Furqan:74]

    رَبَّنَا لَغَفُورٌ شَكُورٌ
    “Our Lord is Forgiving and Appreciative” [Surah 35. Fatir:34]

    “Our Lord, You have encompassed all things in mercy and knowledge, so forgive those who have repented and followed Your way and protect them from the punishment of Hellfire.” [Surah 40 Al Mumin:7]

    رَبَّنَا وَأَدۡخِلۡهُمۡ جَنَّـٰتِ عَدۡنٍ ٱلَّتِي وَعَدتَّهُمۡ وَمَن صَلَحَ مِنۡ ءَابَآئِهِمۡ وَأَزۡوَٰجِهِمۡ وَذُرِّيَّـٰتِهِمۡۚ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلۡعَزِيزُ ٱلۡحَكِيمُ وَقِهِمُ ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِۚ وَمَن تَقِ ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ يَوۡمَئِذٖ فَقَدۡ رَحِمۡتَهُۥۚ وَذَٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلۡفَوۡزُ ٱلۡعَظِيمُ
    “Our Lord, and admit them to gardens of perpetual residence which You have promised them and whoever was righteous among their forefathers, their spouses and their offspring. Indeed, it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise. And protect them from the evil consequences [of their deeds]. And he whom You protect from evil consequences that Day – You will have given him mercy. And that is the great attainment.” [Surah 40 Al Mumin:8-9]

    رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لَنَا وَلِإِخْوَانِنَا الَّذِينَ سَبَقُونَا بِالْإِيمَانِ وَلَا تَجْعَلْ فِي قُلُوبِنَا غِلًّا لِّلَّذِينَ اٰمَنُوا
    “Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith and put not in our hearts [any] resentment toward those who have believed.” [Surah 59. Al-Hashr:10]

    رَبَّنَآ إِنَّكَ رَءُوفٞ رَّحِيمٌ
    “Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful.” [Surah 59. Al-Hashr:10]

    “Our Lord, upon You we have relied, and to You we have returned, and to You is the destination.” [Surah 60. Al-Mumtahana:4]

    “Our Lord, make us not [objects of] torment for the disbelievers and forgive us, our Lord. Indeed, it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.” [Surah 60. Al-Mumtahana:5]

    “Our Lord, perfect for us our light and forgive us. Indeed, You are over all things competent.” [Surah 66. At-Tahrim:8]

    May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 
    وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 
    (36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
    That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

    Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

    May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

    Note: When we mention God in our posts, we mean One True God, we call Allah in Islam, with no associates. Allah is the Sole Creator of all things, and that Allah is all-powerful and all-knowing. Allah has no offspring, no race, no gender, no body, and is unaffected by the characteristics of human life.

    Selected Verses from Quran: Rabbana Series - 3


    Blessed are those who listened to the call of the prophets of Allah and bring faith on the Divine commandments.  And how ungrateful are those who did not pay any attention to what prophets of Allah were saying or calling them to the path of ultimate truth. And even more ungrateful are those who listened to the call of the prophets but then drifted away from the guidance given to them by Allah and made innovations in the Holy Scriptures to suit their own requirements and lust. 

    Here in this verse from Surah 3. Al-i'Imran, is the expression of gratitude by those believers who not only listened to the call of Prophet of Allah and believed in him too.

    رَبَّنَاۤ اِنَّنَا سَمِعۡنَا مُنَادِيًا يُّنَادِىۡ لِلۡاِيۡمَانِ اَنۡ اٰمِنُوۡا بِرَبِّكُمۡ فَاٰمَنَّا  ۖ رَبَّنَا فَاغۡفِرۡ لَنَا ذُنُوۡبَنَا وَكَفِّرۡ عَنَّا سَيِّاٰتِنَا وَتَوَفَّنَا مَعَ الۡاَبۡرَارِ​ۚ‏ 
    "Our Lord! Indeed we heard a crier calling to the faith saying: "Believe in your Lord"; so we did believe. Our Lord, forgive us our sins, and wipe out our evil deeds and make us die with the truly pious.'" (Surah 3 Al-i'Imran: 193) 

    These believers are those who unlike the drivelers of Makkah did not demand miracles nor did insist on silly arguments and in fact the mere person of the prophet was no less than a miracle in their eyes; so when they saw that this call of professing faith in Allah and the Hereafter is the call of their own hearts and inner self, they bear witness to it and knowledge and intellect also demand it, and accepted it without any hesitation.

    Such are the believers who call on to their Lord, and pray that they be wiped of any remnants of evil that reside in them and that they be forgiven and live a life as taught by the Prophet of Allah in the light of Divine Commandments. And their ultimate is to die as truly pious and blessed servants of Allah.

    May Allah help us understand Qur'an and help us to act upon the commandments of Allah contained therein. Aameen.

    Selected Verses from Quran: Rabbana Series - 1


    Each and every verse of the Quran is special for the Muslims for every word contains the Divine Wisdom and commandments from Allah.  There are verses, which are in fact prayers / dua which believers should recite much to often so that their sins and errors could be forgiven.

    However, there are some verses, that begin with the word Rabbana " رَبَّنَا ". The placement of this word in the beginning is to add a pleading cry by the believer to invoke the many blessings of Allah so that He in all His Mercy, forgives His servants. Not that ordinary believers invoke Allah's Mercy, the prophets too have been calling upon Allah to forgive them, their families and descendants. 

    With this post, we are sharing some of the verses starting from the opener "Rabbana -  رَبَّنَا  " which believers should try to remember by heart and recite much too often so that they should be forgiven. The following verse if from Surah 2 Al Baqarah and is attributed to Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham, peace be upon him). While we are sharing only this verse, it would be appropriate that a reader may read verses before this so as to be able to reconnect the theme and reference to the context in which this pleading prayer (dua) was made by the revered prophet. In this case, this prayer was made by Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him), when he had just finished laying the foundations of the Ka'abah at Makkah:

    رَبَّنَا وَاجْعَلْنَا مُسْلِمَيْنِ لَكَ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِنَا أُمَّةً مُّسْلِمَةً لَّكَ وَأَرِنَا مَنَاسِكَنَا وَتُبْ عَلَيْنَآ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ التَّوَّابُ الرَّحِيمُ

    [Rabbana wa-j'alna Muslimayni laka wa min Dhurriyatina 'Ummatan Muslimatan laka wa 'Arina Manasikana wa tub 'alayna 'innaka 'antat-Tawwabu-Raheem]

    "Our Lord! Make of us Muslims, bowing to Thy (Will), and of our progeny a people Muslim, bowing to Thy (will); and show us our place for the celebration of (due) rites; and turn unto us (in Mercy); for Thou art the Oft-Returning, Most Merciful." [Surah 2 Al-Baqarah: 128]

    Verse 128 mentions that Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham, peace be upon him) prayed to Allah "to make" him and his son obedient to His commandments and to His Will. This prayer too proceeds from the same sense of fear and awe, and from the same knowledge. He has, all his life, been performing exemplary deeds of obedience, and yet he prays to "be made" obedient. It is so, because the more one grows in one's knowledge of Divine Majesty, the more one comes to realize that one is not being faithful and obedient as is due. 

    It is significant that Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham, peace be upon him) included his descendants too in his prayer. This shows that the "men of Allah" who never hesitate in sacrificing themselves and their children in the way of Allah, yet love them deeply. All the same, they know what the proper requirements of parental love are, and how they should be fulfilled. This is something beyond the reach of average men, who suppose the well-being of their children to reside in physical health and comfort alone, and spend all their love and care in providing just this to their family. But those who have received the favour of Allah show a much greater solicitude for the spiritual well-being of their children than for the physical, being. So, the great prophet prayed to Allah to make a group from among his descendants fully obedient to Him. This prayer aims at another advantage as well. Experience tells us that if those who enjoy a respectable position in their community, and their descendants keep to the right path, they are naturally held in esteem, and their conduct inspires others to reform themselves. 

    And Allah heard this prayer too, and among the descendants of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham, peace be upon him) there has always been a group of people obedient to Allah and firm in the Straight Path. Even in the Age of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah) when the whole world, and Arabia in particular, was lost in the darkness of idol-worship and Shirk, there still remained some men from among his descendants who had faith in the One God, who believed in the other world, and were obedient to Allah - for example, Zayd ibn 'Amr bin Nufayl, and Quss ibn Sa'idah. It has also been reported that 'Abd al-Muttalib ibn Hashim, the grand-father of the Holy Prophet , shunned idol-worship and Shirk.

    We might add an explanatory note about the word Manasik (the plural of Mansik) which occurs in Verse 128. This word signifies the different actions involved in the performance of the Hajj, and also the different places where the rites are performed - like 'Arafah, Muzdalifah or Mina. Both the meanings of the word are intended here, and the substance of the last part of the prayer is that Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) wanted the rites of the Hajj to be explained and their locations to be indicated. The verb which has been employed in this connection is Arina - "show us." Now, seeing is done through the eyes, and also through the heart. So, the different locations of the rites were shown to him through the Archangel Jibraeel (Gabriel) , and the injunctions regarding the Hajj were explained in detail. 

    At the end of the verse above, two attributes of Allah ( AT Tawwab and Ar Rahim) have been mentioned. For their detailed explanation, please refer to our reference page: 99 Attributes of Allah.
