Those who intend to make any change in Qur’an will find no refuge from Divine Wrath

Qur'an, the last of the four Divine Scriptures, has never been accepted by the non believers, even by the followers of the earlier three scriptures. There have been efforts even during the time of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to make "some" changes in the Divine revelations that could also accommodate the viewpoint of the non believers. In this context, one may read Sürah 109. Al Kafirun (The Unbelievers / Those Who Deny the Truth), in which the mention of a debate is made wherein the disbelievers of Makkah wanted to persuade Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to make changes in Qur'an - but the revered Prophet Muhammad ﷺ strictly refused at the end of the end of the debate saying:

لَـكُمۡ دِيۡنُكُمۡ وَلِىَ دِيۡنِ
To you is your religion, and to me, my religion.

Even today, the efforts of non Muslims continue to make changes in the Qur'an. Though many may succeed in altering the translation, they will never be able to alter the Arabic text which is Divinely constructed that it is not possible to change even a word for this will never be able to support the balance created in the Qur'an by Allah. 

In the same context, today we share the 27th verse of Surah Al-Kahf, in which Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has been cautioned to succumbing to the pressure and ulterior motives of the disbelievers of Makkah to making changes in Qur'an. Here it needs to be clarified that though the verse is directed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, it also addresses anyone who attempts to make changes in order to change the word of Allah and thus misleading, even including Muslims:

وَاتۡلُ مَاۤ اُوۡحِىَ اِلَيۡكَ مِنۡ كِتَابِ رَبِّكَ ​ؕ لَا مُبَدِّلَ لِكَلِمٰتِهٖ​ ۚ وَلَنۡ تَجِدَ مِنۡ دُوۡنِهٖ مُلۡتَحَدًا‏
Translation:
(O Prophet) recite to them from the Book of your Lord what has been revealed to you for none may change His words; (and were you to make any change in His words) you will find no refuge from Him.

Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, one of the most enlightened scholars of the Muslim World, explains this verse:
This does not mean at all that, God forbid, the Prophet ﷺ was inclined to make any changes in the Quran to please the disbelievers of Makkah and was thinking of some formula of compromise with the chiefs of the Quraish which necessitated a warning that he was not authorized to do so. As a matter of tact, though this was apparently addressed to the Prophet (peace be upon him), it was really meant for the disbelievers that they should not entertain any hope whatsoever for anything like this, as if to say: You must understand it once and for all that Our Messenger is not authorized to make any changes in Our revelation, for he has to precisely convey it just as it is sent down to him. If you want to accept it, you will have to accept it in its entirety as it is being sent by the Lord of the Universe. And if you want to reject it, you may do so but you must understand it well that no modification, even in the least, will be made in it to please you. This was the answer to the repeated demand of the disbelievers: If you do insist, O Muhammad (peace be upon him), that we should accept your message in its entirety, then make certain modifications in it to accommodate some creeds and customs of our forefathers, and we will accept your message. This is our offer for a compromise and this will save our people from division. This demand of the disbelievers has been cited in the Quran at several places and the same answer has been given, e.g. When Our clear revelations are recited to them, those who do not expect to meet Us, say: Bring another Quran in its stead or make some amendments in it. (Surah Younus, Ayat 15).

Let us go into a detailed Analysis:
  • Context and Background: Surah Al-Kahf is the 18th chapter of the Quran. It addresses themes of faith, trials, and the power of Allah. Verse 27 is a directive to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and by extension to all believers about the importance of adhering to the Quran.
  • Key Elements of the Verse:
    • Recitation of the Revelation: The command to "recite what has been revealed" emphasizes the importance of reading, understanding, and conveying the Quranic message. It highlights the duty of Muslims to stay connected to the Quran through regular recitation and reflection.
    • Book of Your Lord: The term "Book of your Lord" signifies the divine origin of the Qur'an. It is not just a book but a direct revelation from Allah, making it supreme and authoritative.
    • Unchangeable Words: "There is no changer of His words" underscores the immutability and perfection of the Quran. Unlike other texts, the Quran remains unchanged and preserved, free from any human alteration. This phrase also reassures believers about the authenticity and reliability of the Quranic message.
    • No Refuge Besides Him: The verse concludes with a reminder that there is no refuge or source of guidance other than Allah. It calls believers to seek solace, guidance, and protection solely from Allah.
  • Theological Significance:
    • Authority of the Quran: This verse reinforces the Quran's status as the ultimate source of guidance. It is a reminder that the Quran, being the word of Allah, is perfect and complete.
    • Immutability: The declaration that no one can change Allah's words underscores the Quran's divine protection. It assures believers that the Quran they recite today is the same as that revealed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
    • Reliance on Allah: Emphasizing that there is no refuge besides Allah, the verse calls on believers to place their trust and reliance solely on Him. It encourages seeking protection and guidance only from Allah.
  • Practical Implications:
    • Regular Recitation: Believers are encouraged to recite the Quran regularly, reflecting on its meanings and applying its teachings in their lives.
    • Trust in the Quran: Muslims should have unwavering trust in the Quran's guidance, acknowledging its authority and immutability.
    • Exclusive Dependence on Allah: This verse serves as a reminder to seek help, protection, and guidance exclusively from Allah, avoiding reliance on any other sources.
In the same context, let us share some Related Quranic Verses:
"Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian." Surah Al-Hijr (15:9)

"And the word of your Lord has been fulfilled in truth and in justice. None can alter His words, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing." Surah Al-An’am (6:115)

"Say, 'I am only a man like you, to whom has been revealed that your god is one God. So whoever would hope for the meeting with his Lord - let him do righteous work and not associate in the worship of his Lord anyone.'" Surah Al-Kahf (18:110)

In view of the above explanation and analysis, let us say that Surah Al-Kahf, verse 27, encapsulates key aspects of the Islamic faith: the importance of the Quran, its divine protection, and the necessity of relying solely on Allah. It calls believers to engage deeply with the Quran, trust in its unaltered guidance, and seek refuge and direction exclusively from Allah. This verse, like many others in the Quran, provides a comprehensive reminder of the core principles that guide a Muslim's life.

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

What is patience in Good Grace (صَبۡرٌ جَمِيۡلٌ)

Patiance is the hallmark of a believer. When confronted with a setback, a loss or being devastated by a calamity, Allah advises His servants to be patient. Although, man by nature is too weak and meek, exercising patience more often than not becomes too difficult to exercise. Therefore, at number of places in Qur'an, man has been continuously advised to be patient for Allah has something better in store against what has been lost.
"And resort to patience and As Salat (Prayer) for help.  Truly Prayer is burdensome for all except the devout," (Surah 2 Al Baqarah: 45)

Above shared verse is one of so many verses from Qur'an which encourages man to resort to patience and when it becomes difficult to bear, resort to As Salat for Divine help.

But how do we exercise patience in good grace?  Can patience be in good grace, that is one is laden with the enormous grief of one's loss, yet he should be patient in good grace? And when it comes to losing something very precious, like one's beloved son, can a man be still be patient is good grace? Well, one can, provided one has complete faith in Allah and when one knows that the loss has come to him as a test and one must bear the loss gracefully and then leave rest to Allah.

This is the theme of our selected verse from 12th Chapter of Qur'an, that is Surah Yusuf (Prophet Joseph, peace be upon him) which is related to the time when young Yusuf was taken by his envious brothers, thrown in a dead well and came back with his shirt with blood stains on it and lamented to their father Prophet Yaqoob (Jacob, may peace be upon him).

That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

وَجَآءُوۡ عَلٰى قَمِيـۡصِهٖ بِدَمٍ كَذِبٍ​ؕ قَالَ بَلۡ سَوَّلَتۡ لَـكُمۡ اَنۡفُسُكُمۡ اَمۡرًا​ؕ فَصَبۡرٌ جَمِيۡلٌ​ؕ وَاللّٰهُ الۡمُسۡتَعَانُ عَلٰى مَا تَصِفُوۡنَ‏  

(12:18) And they brought Joseph's shirt, stained with false blood. Seeing this their father exclaimed: "Nay (this is not true); rather your evil souls have made it easy for you to commit a heinous act. So, I will bear this patiently, and in good grace. It is Allah's help alone that I seek against your fabrication.

In Quran the term "sabr e jamil" (صبر جميل) translates to "beautiful patience." This phrase embodies a form of patience that is characterized by:

  • Calm Acceptance: It reflects a serene and dignified acceptance of hardship without complaint.
  • Faith and Trust in Allah: Beautiful patience involves placing trust in Allah's wisdom and timing, believing that He will provide relief or justice in due course.
  • Avoidance of Grievance: It indicates refraining from expressing anger or frustration, and instead maintaining a positive attitude despite the adversity faced.

Overall, "sabr e jamil" highlights the virtue of enduring challenges with grace, dignity, and unwavering faith in God's plan.

The verse is explained as under by one of the famous Muslim scholars and exegete Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi:

The literal meaning of "good patience صَبۡرٌ جَمِيۡلٌ" implies patience that enables one to endure all kinds of troubles and afflictions in a calm, self-possessed and unemotional manner, without complaining or crying or weeping, as is worthy of great minds

(And this how Prophet Jacob maintained himself, knowing the foul play and said: I will bear this patiently, and in good grace. It is Allah's help alone that I seek against your fabrication. He said that he would hold his heart in patience and implore Allah's assistance, for he had faith, and knew that all that Allah does is for the best!)

Prophet Jacob's reaction to the news of Joseph's death, as depicted in the Qur'an, is different from that given in the Bible and the Talmud. According to them he was upset by the sad news and behaved like an ordinary father. The Bible says, "And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins. And mourned for his son for many days." (Gen. 37: 34). And the Talmud says that at the sad news Jacob gave himself up to the abandonment of grief, and lay with his face to the ground.... and refused to be comforted, and cried, 'Some wild beast has devoured Joseph and I shall never see him more'; and he mourned for Joseph for many years. (The Talmud, H. Polano, pp. 78, 79).

When we contrast this picture with the one depicted in the Qur'an, we clearly see that the Qur'anic picture is that of a dignified and great personality. He is not upset in the least at hearing the sad news of his beloved son but at once gets to the bottom of the matter, and tells the envious brothers, "Your tale is false and fabricated." Then he shows "good patience" as a Prophet should and puts his trust in the help of God.  "

Now my brothers and sisters in Islam, let us review our state in state of grief and loss. Many of us, especially women, weep and cry, beat their chests and openly ask Allah the why of such calamity that befall on them and words to that effect. Whereas, the above quoted verse and its explanation teaches us to be fully composed and bear the loss with patience in good grace. 

Although it is very difficult to be calm and composed, a true believer should neither panic nor complain. Rather he would seek only God’s support against by repeatedly saying: وَاللّٰهُ الۡمُسۡتَعَانُ. This phrase وَاللّٰهُ الۡمُسۡتَعَانُ (Wallahul Musta'an) is used to call for Allah's help when one finds oneself in impossible situations and when one is confronted with teamed up people who by their lies want to defame you and tarnish your image, or when you feel sidelined and alone or devastated by a calamity or huge loss. he is said to have settled down for It should be repeatedly said when one realizes that there is no way out for him and it is Allah alone Who can render a helping hand.

When one reaches this state of peaceful mind despite the loss, he is deemed to have settled down with patience in good grace. Please share this post with people under distress and try to explain to them what is patience in Good Grace (صَبۡرٌ جَمِيۡلٌ) and why it is to be exercised despite one's difficult times. Man laments: I'm unappreciated - Allah reassures: Your efforts will be appreciated and rewarded

It is human nature that a man expects his work to be appreciated and rewarded accordingly. When men's work is lauded, appreciated and rewarded whether monetarily or a fillip on one's shoulder by the company head. Such demonstrated acts of appreciation motivate men to work more and remain focused to further improve their output. That is appreciation and rewards increase one's ability to work diligently to be in the category of good workers.

Likewise, believers also expect some sort of Divine appreciation and rewards for their sincerity, remaining focused on the right path, beating back evil. And like workers of a company, they feel morose and let down when they compare their sincerity accruing no rewards, as compared to those who are not following the Divine path and yet being living a promising life.

To ward off such a tendency, Allah reassures such men, who lament that they are not being Divinely appreciated, that their sincerity is being appreciated, sometimes visible and sometimes backstage. This Divine reassurance is mentioned in the 22nd verse of Surah 76 Al Insan (The Man), also called Surah Ad Dahr (Time). In fact, the shared reassurance is part of the continuation of previous many verses in which a beautiful picture is painted of Jannah / Paradise which tells the believers that they may not see any worldly rewards forthcoming always, yet their final reward is with Allah, who is always watching His servants, appreciating their sincerity to Him and to His favoured religion Islam, and building up a great reward for them

اِنَّ هٰذَا كَانَ لَـكُمۡ جَزَآءً وَّكَانَ سَعۡيُكُمۡ مَّشۡكُوۡرًا‏ 
(76:22) Behold, this is your recompense and your endeavour has been appreciated
In the original, " كَانَ سَعۡيُكُمۡ مَّشۡكُوۡرًا " kana sa yu kum mashkura: "your endeavors have been accepted and recognized." Sa`i implies the entire lifework that a person accomplished in the world, the works and objectives to which he applied his energies and abilities; and its being mashkur means that Allah has appreciated it. Shukr when expressed by the servant to God implies his gratefulness to Him for His blessings, and when it is expressed by God for the servant, it means that He has appreciated his services. It is indeed highly kind of the Master that He should appreciate the endeavors of the servant when the servant has only carried out his duties according to the Master's will.

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir
(Verily, this is a reward for you, and your endeavor has been accepted.) meaning, this will be said to them in honor of them and as goodness towards them. 

    This is as Allah says, (Eat and drink at ease for that which you have sent forth before you in days past!) (69:24) 

    Allah also says, (And it will be cried out to them: "This is the Paradise which you have inherited for what you used to do.') (7:43) 

Then Allah says, (and your endeavor has been accepted) meaning, `Allah the Exalted will reward you for a small amount (of deeds) with a large amount (of reward).'

Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:
In fact, this verse gives us an inspiring and detailed picture of the bliss and luxury enjoyed by the dwellers of heaven. All this is given in contrast with the chains, shackles and blazing fire the unbelievers suffer. We, thus, see the two widely different ends to the two widely divergent ways.

So let us have faith in Allah and be assured that Allah never goes His promises and all believers who wholeheartedly support Islam and Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, that is Allah's favoured religion and prophet, will be rewarded in abundance. Though a part of it will be given to them in this life too, wholesome rewards will be given to them when many will be dragged towards the burning hell.

But those who believe are indeed just a few

Standing alone or with the few is one of the most difficult things to do. By doing so, one not gets isolated but also has to listen to the others in large numbers. Such a bunch of a few is always subjected to criticism, and even sarcasm for not siding with the majority. This generally happens in democracy and one's faith. Whenever a prophet or a messenger called upon its people to follow the Divine Truth, none but a few paid heeds to them. Rather the majority subjected them to intense physical and mental torture for leaving the faith of their forefathers and listening to lunatic, sorcerers, magicians and poets, that is what the named the prophets. However, the few always have been right and flourished despite all odds against them. 

Recently, we have taken upon ourselves to share the same theme based on verses from Qur'an that Only a few are grateful. In doing so, we first listed and wrote about who are the Most. we come to the main theme of Being among the few. Thus, we share the 40the verse from Surah 11. Hud, in which mention is made of Prophet Nuh (Noah, may peace be upon him) who had but a few by his side while the majority abandoned and cursed him. They did not know that whosoever curses or abandons a prophet is untimely himself cursed and condemned by the Lord of the universe. The explanation given in the verse below is only given to put the readers in the right perspective by providing them with just the immediate background when the great deluge started to happen and only the few who believed Prophet Noah survived. even the son of Prophet Noah perished in the water right in front of the eyes of his father.

Thus, this verse is about the beginning of the Flood and Nuh loading Every Creature in Pairs upon the Ship. This was the promise of Allah to Nuh, when the command of Allah came, the rain was continuous and there was a severe storm which did not slacken or subside.

حَتّٰۤى اِذَا جَآءَ اَمۡرُنَا وَفَارَ التَّنُّوۡرُۙ قُلۡنَا احۡمِلۡ فِيۡهَا مِنۡ كُلٍّ زَوۡجَيۡنِ اثۡنَيۡنِ وَاَهۡلَكَ اِلَّا مَنۡ سَبَقَ عَلَيۡهِ الۡقَوۡلُ وَمَنۡ اٰمَنَ​ؕ وَمَاۤ اٰمَنَ مَعَهٗۤ اِلَّا قَلِيۡلٌ‏ 
(11:40) Thus it was until Our command came to pass and the oven boiled over. We said: 'Take into the Ark a pair of every species; and take your own family except those who have already been declared (as unworthy); and also take everyone who believes. But those who, along with him, had believed were indeed just a few.
Different interpretations have been given of this, but we are of the opinion that the correct one is the one that is based on the plain words of the Text. The Deluge started from At-Tannur, a particular oven from under which water began to boil up. At the same time heavy rain began to fall and springs began to gush up water from many places in the earth. This is given in detail in vv. 11-12 of Surah AI-Qamar: "We opened the gates of the sky from which it began to rain heavily and constantly, and We tore open the earth and springs began to gush forth water from every side: Thus, the two kinds of water gathered together to fulfill the destined doom."

In this connection, it should also be noted that the prefix (al) (the) before (tannurالتَّنُّوۡرُۙ ), oven, shows that a particular oven had been specifically marked by God for the purpose of starting the Deluge. This began to boil up water as soon as it was commanded to do so, and afterwards it began to be called (The Oven). It has been explicitly stated in v. 7 of XXIII that the said Tannur was specified beforehand. 

(We said: 'Take into the Ark a pair of every species; and take your own family except those who have already been declared (as unworthy)) That is, "Don't embark in the Ark those who had specifically been marked as unbelievers from your household, for they do not deserve to be shown Our Compassion. Most probably there were two people. One was his son who drowned (v. 43), and the other was his wife: (LXVI: 10). And if there were any others, they have not been mentioned in the Qur'an. 

(And also take everyone who believes) Incidentally, this refutes the theory of the historians and genealogists who trace the genealogy of the whole human race to the three sons of Prophet Noah. This wrong theory became prevalent because of the stories in the Bible that none other than Prophet Noah, his three sons and his wife were rescued from the deluge. (Genesis 6: 18, 7: 7, 9, and 9: 19). But the Qur'an contradicts this in many places, saying that besides the people of his own household, sane other people of his community, though small in number, were also rescued along with him. Moreover, the Qur'an declares that the generations which came after Prophet Noah were his descendants and of all those people who were rescued in the Ark: "You are the descendants of those whom We bore in the Ark with Noah-- (XVII: 3) ". . . . they were from the descendants of Adam, and from the seed of those whom we carried in the Ark with Noah...." (XIX: 58). 

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir notes that (And none believed with him, except a few) means that only a very small number believed, even after the long period of time that he (Nuh) was among them -- nine hundred and fifty years. It is reported from Ibn `Abbas that he said, "They were eighty people including their women.'' 

Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Explanation:
This sentence expresses yearning and sorrow: a vast majority of people continued to evade the truth in spite of several hundred years of warnings delivered to them by Noah (sws) and were finally drowned in the sea. There is also an indirect message of assurance in these words for the Prophet (sws) and his companions: if the arrogant majority of the Quraysh also reaches a similar fate, then this should not be any cause of wonder. Many nations before them have encountered such a fate.

In nutshell, only a few people side with someone who is talking sense and leading people to the truth and trusted path: The path of the blessed ones. Such people endure hardships and backlash from the majority. Yet still they cling to the truth and continue to call others to the truth and to One True God, without any associates. So let us be of the few and stand tall, for our salvation lies in siding with those who truly believe, and let us not be overwhelmed by those who do not believe.
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 
وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Indeed, Allah is Bounteous to mankind; but Most People do not give thanks in return

"Most of us" generally look for Divine support when we are in distress or need help. Yet when our needs are fulfilled, we do not give thanks in return to the Lord of the universe, without whose help we could not have overcome our difficulties and distress. This has been specially so whenever prophets went to their people and called them to the righteous path. Many initially showed their willingness and as long Divine blessings descended upon them. But when testing time came, many bolted and refused to give out in charity in name of Allah or fight for the Divine cause.

This post is about such ungrateful people whom Allah helped and they became ungrateful thereafter. To better understand this post, please correlate this post with one of earlier posts: Let us be of the few who are grateful

اَلَمۡ تَرَ اِلَى الَّذِيۡنَ خَرَجُوۡا مِنۡ دِيَارِهِمۡ وَهُمۡ اُلُوۡفٌ حَذَرَ الۡمَوۡتِ فَقَالَ لَهُمُ اللّٰهُ مُوۡتُوۡا ثُمَّ اَحۡيَاھُمۡ​ؕ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ لَذُوۡ فَضۡلٍ عَلَى النَّاسِ وَلٰـكِنَّ اَکۡثَرَ النَّاسِ لَا يَشۡکُرُوۡنَ‏ 
(2:243) (O Messenger), have you thought of those who went forth from their homes for fear of death even though they were in their thousands? Allah said to them: “Die!” Then He restored them to life. Indeed, Allah is Bounteous to mankind; but most people do not give thanks in return.
From here begins a new address. In it the Muslims have been exhorted to do Jihad," i.e., to exert their utmost in the Way of Allah and make monetary sacrifices for the cause. At the sametime,e they have been warned to guard against those weaknesses that had led to the degeneration and downfall of the children of Israel. It will help understand this address, if we keep in mind the occasion of its revelation. At that time the Muslims, who had been expelled from Makkah a year or so earlier and were living as refugees at Madinah, were asking over and over again for permission to fight with the disbelievers who had been persecuting them relentlessly for years. But, when the permission they themselves had asked was given, some of them began to lose heart (Please refer to Al-Baqarah 2:216). That is why two important events from the history of the Israelites are being related to serve as a fore-warning to the Muslims and to stimulate their zeal and courage.  

Allah said to them: “Die!” Then He restored them to life This refers to the exodus of the children ofIsraell (for details please see Al-Maidah, V: 20-26), when they had left Egypt in large numbers and were wandering homeless in the deserts and wildernesses and were very anxious to find a home for themselves. But when inspired by Allah, the Prophet Moses ordered them to fight against the Canaanites and expel them from Palestine and conquer that territory, they showed cowardice and refused to march forward. Consequently, Allah left them to wander in the land for forty years so that that generation should come to an end and a new one be brought up in the hardships of the desert. Then Allah gave them victory over the Canaanites. Probably "death and second life" refer to these two aspects of the exodus. 

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir:  The Story of the Dead People

Ibn Abu Hatim related that Ibn `Abbas said that these people mentioned herein were the residents of a village called Dawardan. `Ali bin `Asim said that they were from Dawardan, a village several miles away from Wasit (in Iraq).

In his Tafsir, Waki` bin Jarrah said that Ibn `Abbas commented, (أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى الَّذِينَ خَرَجُواْ مِن دِيَـرِهِمْ وَهُمْ أُلُوفٌ حَذَرَ الْمَوْتِ Did you (O Muhammad) not think of those who went forth from their homes in thousands, fearing death) that they were four thousand persons who escaped the plague (that broke out in their land). They said, "We should go to a land that is free of death!'' When they reached a certain area, Allah said to them: (مُوتُواْ "Die.'') and they all died. Afterwards, one of the Prophets passed by them and supplicated to Allah to resurrect them and Allah brought them back to life. So, Allah stated: (أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى الَّذِينَ خَرَجُواْ مِن دِيَـرِهِمْ وَهُمْ أُلُوفٌ حَذَرَ الْمَوْتِ Did you (O Muhammad) not think of those who went forth from their homes in the thousands, fearing death)

Furthermore, several scholars among the Salaf said that these people were the residents of a city during the time of the Children of Israel. The weather in their land did not suit them and an epidemic broke out. They fled their land fearing death and took refuge in the wilderness. They later arrived at a fertile valley and they filled what is between its two sides. Then Allah sent two angels to them, one from the lower side and the other from the upper side of the valley. The angels screamed once and all the people died instantly, just as the death of one man. They were later moved to a different place, where walls and graves were built around them. They all perished, and their bodies rotted and disintegrated. Long afterwards, one of the Prophets of the Children of Israel, whose name was Hizqil (Ezekiel), passed by them and asked Allah to bring them back to life by his hand. Allah accepted his supplication and commanded him to say, "O rotted bones, Allah commands you to come together.' The bones of everybody were brought together. Allah then commanded him to say, "O bones, Allah commands you to be covered with flesh, nerves and skin.'' That also happened while Hizqil was watching. Allah then commanded him to say, "O souls, Allah commands you to return, each to the body that it used to inhabit.'' They all came back to life, looked around and proclaimed, "All praise is due to You (O Allah!) and there is no deity worthy of worship except You.'' Allah brought them back to life after they had perished long ago.

We should state that bringing these people back to life is clear proof that physical resurrection shall occur on the Day of Resurrection. This is why Allah said: (إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَذُو فَضْلٍ عَلَى النَّاسِ Truly, Allah is full of bounty to mankind,) meaning, in that He shows them His great signs, sound proofs and clear evidences. Yet, (وَلَـكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ النَّاسِ لاَ يَشْكُرُونَ but most men thank not.) as they do not thank Allah for what He has given them in their worldly life and religious affairs.

The story of the dead people (2:244) also indicates that no caution can ever avert destiny and that there is no refuge from Allah, but to Allah Himself. These people departed from their land fleeing the epidemic and seeking to enjoy a long life. What they earned was the opposite of what they sought, as death came quickly and instantaneously and seized them all.

There is an authentic Hadith that Imam Ahmad reported that `Abdullah bin `Abbas said that `Umar bin Al-Khattab once went to Ash-Sham (Syria). When he reached the area of Sargh, he was met by the commanders of the army: Abu `Ubaydah bin Jarrah and his companions. They told him that the plague had broken out in Ash-Sham. The Hadith then mentioned that `Abdur-Rahman bin `Awf, who was away attending to some of his affairs, came and said, "I have knowledge regarding this matter. I heard Allah's Messenger say: (If it (the plague) breaks out in a land that you are in, do not leave that land to escape from it. If you hear about it in a land, do not enter it.)

`Umar then thanked Allah and went back. This Hadith is also reported in the Sahihayn.

Muhammad Asad Explanation:
After the conclusion of the injunctions relating to marital life, the Qur'an returns here to the problem of warfare in a just cause by alluding to people who - obviously under a hostile attack - "forsook their homelands for fear of death". Now, neither the Qur'an nor any authentic Tradition offers any indication as to who the people referred to in this verse may have been. The "historical" explanations given by some of the commentators are most contradictory; they seem to have been derived from Talmudic stories current at the time, and cannot be used in this context with any justification. We must, therefore, assume (as Muhammad 'Abduh does in Manar II. 455 ff.) that the above allusion is parabolically connected with the subsequent call to the faithful to be ready to lay down their lives in God's cause: an illustration of the fact that fear of physical death leads to the moral death of nations and communities, just as their regeneration (or "coming back to life") depends on their regaining their moral status through overcoming the fear of death. This is undoubtedly the purport of the elliptic story of Samuel, Saul and David told in verses {246-251}.

Yusuf Ali Explanation
We now return to the subject of Jihad. We are to be under no illusion about it. If we are not prepared to fight for our faith, with our lives and all our resources, both our lives and our resources will be wiped out by our enemies. As to life, God gave it, and a coward is not likely to save it. It has happened again and again in history that men who tamely submitted to be driven from their homes although they were more numerous than their enemies had the sentence of death pronounced on them for their cowardice, and they deserved it. But God gives further and further chances in His mercy. This is a lesson for every generation. The Commentators differ as to the exact episode referred to, but the wording is perfectly general, and so is the lesson to be learnt from it.

Qur'an Wiki Explanation:
The aim of this verse is simply to establish that life and death are determined by the will of God, and that human beings should fulfil their obligations in life with complete trust in God’s will and total reassurance that what befalls them is an integral part of God’s order of things.

No precautions could ever prevent death or impede God’s will, nor could fear or despair prolong life. Life and death are entirely in God’s hands. He dispenses them according to reasons known only to Him, and His grace and mercy are evident in both. “Surely, God grants limitless bounty to mankind, but most people are ungrateful.”

Such a mass exodus, with thousands of people fleeing at the same time, whether from a hostile attack or the outbreak of disease, could only occur in a state of total panic. Nevertheless, running away could not save those people from meeting their death, for “God said to them; ‘Die.’“

No details are given as to the manner in which God spoke to those or how they met their death, because these bear no relevance to the objective of the story, which is that their despairing desertion of their homes did not change the destiny God had already willed for those panic-stricken people. They needed to persevere, be patient and freely put their trust in God.

Nor are we given any details of how God brought those people back to life, or on whether this is a reference to a later generation of the same community who did not panic or despair, and who accepted what God had chosen for them. There would be no point in speculating over these matters; nor can we accept the various unsubstantiated accounts of some commentaries. The essential message here is that God gave those people life, and their own efforts could not prevent their death. Life is a gift from God which He bestows on human beings with no effort or reason on their part. They, on the other hand, can do nothing to prevent what God has predestined.

The anecdotes mentioned by each exegete mentioned above differ in place and people. However, despite the difference since documented history of such old anecdotes are scarce and not available. Yet the lesson from the verse 243 remains the same: Most Men being ungrateful in returning thanks to Allah after a favour has been received and are often destroyed or taste the divine wrath in form of plagues and diseases or natural calamities.  May we be never ungrateful to Allah for we have been blessed much more than we truly deserve.

Death from which you flee will certainly overtake you

Of all the words in vocabularies, the most feared word is Death. No one, even suffering from any serious ailment, hopes to die. But whether one likes or not, death befalls on any living being that is created. Wikipedia describes death as an inevitable process that eventually occurs in all organisms. It is an irreversible cessation of all biological functions that sustain an organism. For organisms with a brain, death can also be defined as the irreversible cessation of functioning of the whole brain, including the brainstem, and brain death is sometimes used as a legal definition of death. The remains of a former organism normally begin to decompose shortly after death. As of 2022, a total of 109 billion humans have died, or roughly 93.8% of all humans to ever live.

Man can attain any age, yet his final call comes despite his urge to live another day. Even some of prophets who lived for many centuries, too have to taste the death. Methusaleh, an Arab prophet sent to the people of Thamud who lived in an area known as Al-Hijr between Hijaz and Tabuk. He was grandfather of Noah (عليه السلام) and son of Enoch (idrees عليه السلام). He is said to have lived at an age of 969, making him the longest living person in the Bible.

No matter where a man could be, he will be taken to his place of death beyond his imagination. The recent death of five adventurous men who paid millions of dollars to go as deep as to the bed of the sea in a small sub called Titan, something like 3500 meters or may be more, to see the wreckage of the ill-fated ship Titanic. They never knew that their death is calling them in that desolate place under the seabed and they were paying for it. 

At many a place in Qur'an, there is mention of death and man has been warned that he will be resurrected at an appointed time to answer for his actions, good or bad, which he took during his worldly life. We have already shared tow verse about death in our previous posts, shared herein under:
Today, we share another verse from Qur'an, the eighth verse of Surah 62. Al-Jumu'ah warning men of the impending death which can strike anytime, even the next second from hence. The purpose of sharing death related posts in not to scare away our readers, but to caution them of its imminence so that we pay attention to our deeds and if we are following our evil desires and the path of the Satan, time is now to repent what have we done and seek forgiveness from Allah before time for seeking forgiveness from Allah runs out.

قُلۡ اِنَّ الۡمَوۡتَ الَّذِىۡ تَفِرُّوۡنَ مِنۡهُ فَاِنَّهٗ مُلٰقِيۡكُمۡ​ ثُمَّ تُرَدُّوۡنَ اِلٰى عٰلِمِ الۡغَيۡبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ فَيُنَبِّئُكُمۡ بِمَا كُنۡتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُوۡنَ
(62:8) Tell them: “The death from which you flee will certainly overtake you. Then you will be returned to Him Who fully knows what is hidden and what is manifest. Thereupon He will let you know all that you used to do.”

At another place (Surah 2. Al Baqarah, verse 96) it is said: And you will surely find them the greediest of people for life – [even] more than those who associate others with Allah. One of them wishes that he could be granted life a thousand years, but it would not remove him in the least from the [coming] punishment that he should be granted life. And Allah is Seeing of what they do.

Yusuf Ali Explanation
Before Allah's Judgment-Seat, when Judgment is established, we shall see the full inwardness of all deeds in this world. The veil of illusion and delusion will be torn off. All our secret motives will be laid bare. The results of all our little plots and plans and their reactions on our eternal welfare will be clearly visible to us. All make-believe will disappear.

Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:
A statement follows that establishes the nature of death and what comes after it. It shows them that their attempts to escape from death are of little use. It will inevitably overtake them. After death, all will return to God where they will have their deeds reckoned and where they will face the consequences of the same.

So, my brothers and sisters in Islam, be ready for the inevitable that may knock at your door any time from hence. Make arrangements for the Day when you will be presented in front of Allah and asked to explain your actions in worldly life, especially the evil ones. Repent now and seek forgiveness from Allah of your bad / misdeeds, for this opportunity will never come again.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Note: When we mention God in our posts, we mean One True God, we call Allah in Islam, with no associates. Allah is the Sole Creator of all things, and that Allah is all-powerful and all-knowing. Allah has no offspring, no race, no gender, no body, and is unaffected by the characteristics of human life.

An effort has been made to gather explanation / exegesis of the surahs of the Qur'ān from authentic sources and then present a least possible condensed explanation of the surah. In that the exegesis of the chapters of the Quran is mainly based on the "Tafhim al-Qur'an - The Meaning of the Qur'an" by one of the most enlightened scholars of the Muslim World Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi.  
In order to augment and add more explanation as already provided, additional input has been interjected from the following sources:
