Fate of the People who sinned and defied the Divine Commandments as mentioned in Qur'an

Defying divine commandments and continue to live a life of wickedness and wrongdoings is considered a serious matter, not only in Islam but all Divine faiths. The consequence of defying the Divine commandments conveyed to the people through prophets and messengers often resulted into severe Divine wrath and many a people perished, leaving behind the remains of their glory, obsessed with which they refused to obey God and continued to live a life of wickedness and sin. The punishments for defying Allah's commandments not only robbed the defiant of their glory in this world but also earned them a life of utter misery in the life of Hereafter.

Let us have a run down of the potential consequences of defying God, we Muslims call Allah - these should be read in the backdrop of historical references of some of the highly placed people and civilizations and their refusal to obey Allah :

Worldly Consequences:
  • Hardships and Trials:
    • Defying Allah's commandments can lead to hardships, trials, or difficulties in this life as a consequence of one’s actions. The Qur'an often speaks of the consequences that befell past nations when they turned away from divine guidance.
    • "And fear a trial which will not strike those who have wronged among you exclusively, and know that Allah is severe in penalty." Surah Al-Anfal (8:25):
    • This verse suggests that disobedience can lead to collective trials or punishments, affecting entire communities or nations.
  • Loss of Blessings: Persistently defying Allah's commandments can result in the loss of blessings such as health, wealth, peace, and contentment. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) mentioned that sins can deprive a person of sustenance or bring about hardships.
Spiritual Consequences:
  • Distance from Allah:
    • Sinning and defying Allah’s commandments can lead to a person becoming spiritually distant from Allah. This can result in a loss of inner peace, increased anxiety, and a sense of emptiness.
    • "Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned." Surah Al-Baqarah (2:286):
    • This verse reminds us that each person is accountable for their actions, and persistent sinning can weigh heavily on the soul.
  • Hardened Heart:
    • Persistently defying Allah can harden a person’s heart, making it more difficult for them to repent or return to righteousness. A hardened heart becomes less receptive to guidance and more inclined towards evil.
    • "No! Rather, the stain has covered their hearts of that which they were earning." Surah Al-Mutaffifin (83:14):
Punishment in the Hereafter:
  • Hellfire:
    • The ultimate punishment for those who defy Allah’s commandments without repentance is the punishment of Hellfire. The Qur'an vividly describes the torment of Hell for those who reject faith or persist in grave sins.
    • "And for those who disbelieved in their Lord is the punishment of Hell, and wretched is the destination. When they are thrown into it, they hear from it a [dreadful] inhaling while it boils up." Surah Al-Mulk (67:6-7)
    • Sins like shirk (associating partners with Allah) are considered the gravest and are warned to lead to eternal punishment in Hell unless repented for.
  • Standing Before Allah for Judgment:
    • On the Day of Judgment, every person will stand before Allah and be judged according to their deeds. Those who defied His commandments without seeking forgiveness will be held accountable and punished accordingly.
    • Surah Al-Zalzalah (99:7-8): "So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it."
    • This verse emphasizes that every deed, no matter how small, will be accounted for on the Day of Judgment.
  • Loss of Paradise
    • One of the gravest consequences of defying Allah’s commandments is being deprived of Paradise. The Qur'an describes Paradise as a place of eternal bliss, reserved for those who obey Allah and live righteously.
    • Surah Al-Baqarah (2:81): "Yes, whoever earns evil and his sin has encompassed him - those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally."
In the Qur'an, a mention is made of such people of the past at a number of places. Some of these mentions are listed herein under. In due course, we would take the case of such people separately in the light of the verses of Qur'an to let our readers draw pertinent lessons and to shape their lives in accordance with the Divine Commandments so as not to be subjected to the Divine Wrath:
  • People of Ad and Thamud: For disobeying the prophets sent to them and for continue to live a life of idolatry, wickedness and sin, these were struck with the Divine wrath as mentioned in Qur'an:  (7:73-79, 11:61-69, 25:38)
  • The people of Noah (Nuh عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ):
    • They were drowned into biggest flood ever in the history for disbelieving in the message brought to them by the revered prophet. Even one of the sins of Nuh عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ was drowned for not following the invitation to worship One True God as preached by his father. (7:64, 11:49, 23:23-30)
    • The word(s) "noah" appears 47 time(s) in 47 verse(s) in Quran in Abdullah Yusuf Ali translation (References)
    • Read our earlier post: Prophet Nuh (Noah) and the Great Flood
  • People of Lot (Lut عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ):
    • His people were subjected to wrath of Allah in the form of shower of burning rocks for defying the Divine Commandment of refraining from ills like homosexuality. Even wife of Nuh عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ fell prey to the Divine wrath for aiding her people against her husband. (Qur'an 7:80-84, 11:77-83, 26:160-173)
    • Read our earlier post: Prophet Lut (Lot) and Allah's Wrath on his People
  • Pharaoh and his followers for the wicked and harsh rule and defying the Divine Commandments brought to him by Prophet Moses (Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) - (Qur'an 2:49-50, 7:103-137, 10:75-83)
  • People of Jonah (Yunis عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ )
    • Prophet Yunis عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ and his mention assumes special attention for him being swallowed by a giant fish and when he repented, the Divine mercy prevailed and was delivered on shore.
    • His people initially defied the Divine Commandments brought to them by the revered prophet, but were forgiven for repenting their defiance. (Qur'an 10:98, 37:139-148)
    • Read our earlier post: Prophet Younis (Jonah) and Allah's Displeasure
  • The people of Al-Aikah or the People of the Wood were the community of Prophet Shuaib عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ They were also  called Midianites after the name of their capital city and their territory. As regards Al-Aikah, it was the ancient name of Tabuk and literally means a thick forest. They were punished for refusing to give up idolatry and life of sin and wickedness (Qur'an 15:78-79, 26:176-189)
  •  People of the Ditch who persecuted the believing men and women and then did not repent. They will certainly suffer the punishment of Hell and the torment of burning. (Qur'an 85:4-11)
  • People of the Elephant (Ashab al feel)
  • People who were sent three prophets - yet they rejected them all (Qur'an 36: 13-32)
  • People of Tubba as mentioned in (Qur'an 44:37-50) for being disbelievers and sinful
* More being added

We need to ponder over these mentions and realise that defying divine commandments in Islam can lead to serious consequences both in this life and the Hereafter. These include worldly hardships, spiritual decline, and potentially severe punishment in the Hereafter. However, Islam also provides a path to redemption through sincere repentance, which can erase sins and bring a person back into Allah’s mercy. Therefore, believers are encouraged to constantly seek Allah's forgiveness and strive to live according to His guidance.

It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Note: When we mention God in our posts, we mean One True God, we call Allah in Islam, with no associates. Allah is the Sole Creator of all things, and that Allah is all-powerful and all-knowing. Utter losers worship others than Allah with lame excuse of being closer to Allah

Faith defines clear lines and directions of worship and devotion. That is it gives the clear direction that leads to  Allah, the One and Only One Creator of the entire universe, and the Ultimate Truth. Despite clear instructions in Qur'an to worship Allah alone and not to take humans as His associates or to find in them a way to reach Allah, for Allah is nearer to one's jugular vein and is always listening to those calling upon him.

It is utterly disturbing to see that a large section of believers, specially in some Asian countries, are misled by the pseudo religious scholars and imams not to approach Allah directly and tell them to find those who know Qur'an better to "route through them their grievances" to Allah for Allah listens to the pious and knowledgeable. This utterly tangent to the teachings of Qur'an and falls into the realm of Shirk. In fact this is what the disbelievers of Makkah did in the formatting days of Islam and would tell Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

We share today the third verse of Surah Az-Zumar which warns the disbelievers and everyone who takes protectors beside Allah with the lame excuse of getting close to Allah. This verse reinforces the importance of exclusive devotion to Allah and warns against associating partners with Him or relying on intermediaries for spiritual closeness. It serves as a reminder that only Allah has the authority to accept or reject worship and that He will decisively address any deviations from the true path.

Surah Az-Zumar (The Troops) is the 39th chapter of the Quran. Verse 3 of this surah reads:

Indeed, sincere devotion is due ˹only˺ to Allah. As for those who take take protectors besides Allah, ˹saying,˺ “We worship them only so they may bring us closer to Allah,” surely Allah will judge between all1 regarding what they differed about. Allah certainly does not guide whoever persists in lying and disbelief.

In this verse, several important concepts are highlighted:
  • Pure Monotheism: The verse emphasizes that worship should be dedicated solely to Allah, the One God. It stresses that true devotion and religious practice should be centered on the exclusive worship of Allah.
  • False Intermediaries: The verse criticizes those who worship other deities or take protectors (such as idols or other beings) besides Allah. These people believe that these intermediaries will help them get closer to Allah, which is a misunderstanding of the concept of monotheism.
  • Divine Judgment: The verse assures that Allah will ultimately judge between those who adhere to pure monotheism and those who deviate by worshiping intermediaries. This judgment will clarify the truth and address any discrepancies in religious practices.
As explained above, this verse highlights key themes of monotheism and the exclusive worship of Allah, and these themes are echoed throughout the Quran. Here’s a deeper look at this verse with references to similar verses:

Key Themes and Similar Verses in Qur'an
  • Exclusive Worship of Allah
    • Surah Al-Baqarah 2:163:
      • "And your God is one God. There is no deity except Him, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate."
      • This verse affirms the oneness of God and emphasizes that He alone deserves worship, aligning with the notion of pure monotheism in Surah Az-Zumar.
    • Surah Al-Ikhlas 112:1-4:
      • "Say, 'He is Allah, [who is] One, Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent.'"
      • This surah reinforces the concept of Allah's unique oneness and His exclusivity in being worshiped.
  • Rejection of Intermediaries
    • Surah Al-Ankabut 29:17:
      • "You worship instead of Allah only idols, and you only invent falsehood. Indeed, those whom you worship instead of Allah have no power to provide for you. So seek from Allah provision and worship Him and be grateful to Him. To Him you will be returned."
      • This verse condemns the worship of idols and emphasizes that only Allah has the power to provide and deserves worship.
    • Surah Al-Zumar 39:7:
      • "If you disbelieve – indeed, Allah is Free from need of you. He does not approve for His servants disbelief. And if you are grateful, He approves it for you. No bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. Then to your Lord is your return, and He will inform you concerning that in which you used to differ."
      • This verse highlights Allah’s independence from His creation and asserts that He alone is worthy of gratitude and worship.
  • Divine Judgment
    • Surah Al-Baqarah 2:281:
    • "And fear the Day when you will be returned to Allah. Then every soul will be compensated for what it earned, and they will not be treated unjustly."
    • This verse speaks about the Day of Judgment when Allah will judge people according to their deeds, resonating with the assurance in Surah Az-Zumar that Allah will judge those who have deviated from true monotheism.
    • Surah Al-Ankabut 29:69:
      • "And those who strive for Us – We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allah is with the doers of good."
      • This verse underscores that Allah will guide those who sincerely strive towards Him and will be the ultimate judge of their intentions and actions.
Hadiths attributed to Prophet on the same theme:
  • Hadith on Monotheism:
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the importance of monotheism in numerous hadiths. For instance, he said, “Whoever says ‘There is no god but Allah’ and dies on that, will enter Paradise”. This hadith underscores the centrality of declaring Allah’s oneness and worshiping Him alone.
  • Hadith on Shirk (Associating Partners with Allah):
The Prophet Muhammad said, “The most grievous sin is to associate partners with Allah, to kill a soul which Allah has forbidden except for a just cause, and to be disobedient to one's parents”. This highlights the severity of shirk (associating partners with Allah) and aligns with the Quranic teaching in Surah Az-Zumar 39:3 about the exclusive right of Allah to be worshiped.
  • Hadith on Intercessors:
The Prophet Muhammad clarified that no one can intercede on behalf of another without Allah’s permission. He said, “No one can intercede with Allah except with His permission”. This aligns with the Quranic verse which addresses the false belief that intermediaries can bring people closer to Allah. In Islam, intercession is only possible with Allah’s permission, and it does not contradict the fundamental belief in Allah’s sole right to be worshiped.
  • Hadith on Idolatry and Intermediaries:
In a hadith recorded in Sahih Muslim, the Prophet Muhammad said, “Avoid the seven destructive sins.” The companions asked, “O Messenger of Allah, what are they?” He replied, “Shirk (associating partners with Allah), magic, killing a soul which Allah has forbidden except in justice, consuming interest, consuming the property of an orphan, fleeing from the battlefield, and slandering chaste, innocent women” (Sahih Muslim 89). This hadith reinforces the rejection of any practice that involves associating partners with Allah or relying on intermediaries for worship.
  • Hadith on Judgment Day:
The Prophet Muhammad taught that on the Day of Judgment, Allah will judge every individual based on their deeds. He said, “Allah will keep His servant under His shade on the Day when there is no shade but His”. This reinforces the idea that Allah alone will judge people and will address any deviations in worship or belief, consistent with Surah Az-Zumar 39:3.
  • Hadith on Accountability:
The Prophet Muhammad also said, “The first matter that the servant will be questioned about on the Day of Judgment is the prayer. If it is correct, then the rest of his actions will be correct; and if it is defective, then the rest of his actions will be defective”. This hadith emphasizes personal accountability and aligns with the Quranic principle that Allah will judge the sincerity and correctness of worship.

The verse of Surah Az-Zumar stated above in the light of other shared verses from Qur'an and Hadiths thus emphasizes the importance of worshiping Allah alone and condemns the use of intermediaries in religious practice. Similar verses throughout the Quran reinforce these concepts by affirming Allah’s exclusive right to worship, rejecting the worship of false deities, and assuring divine judgment on the Day of Resurrection.

Let us not derail us from the Sirat al-Mustaqim "الصراط المستقيم"  (the Straight Path) as shown to us through Qur'an and many a Hadith of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Let us not fall into the trap of the Satan and evil forces that takes us away from Allah and then urging us to protectors other than Allah to reach Him. This is pure shirk and has no place in Islam. We worship only and only One True God, we call Allah in Islam.
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. Who are the Utter Losers (in worldly life and the Hereafter) in the light of Qur'an

We much too often eye successful people around us, the executives, thriving businessmen or flashy models, and wish to be like them. We feel low when wealthy and people of power squander money and buy the luxuries of life, while the majority of the people of the world cannot buy a decent meal or clothe themselves.

This in general terms our perception and definition of success and of the successful. But, the Divine perception of success is something altogether different.

''And when it is said to them, 'Believe as other people have believed,' they say, 'Shall we believe as the fools have believed?' Remember! it is surely they that are fools, but they do not know.' (Surah 2. Al Baqarah: Verse 13)

The real success comes from believing in One True God and following His directives as mentioned in all Divine Scriptures and advocated by the prophets and the messengers. We may be living a life in utter poverty, yet we may finally succeed in the end. But those who think they have succeeded may ultimately end up being the utter losers.

We have already shared traits of the blessed and the successful. Today, we share the verses from Qur'an that lays down the criteria for those who will fall from grace not only in this world but in the life of the Hereafter. By comparing this criterion with those who will attain true success, we may see a very thin line between the two. Yet crossing over this thin line from success to being losers is too big.

Read now how Qur'an defines these losers and warns us not to be like them, for there awaits an unimaginable chastisement for the losers in the life of Hereafter:
We will add more posts specific to Man's Regrets in our future posts. In the meantime, let us steer our lives to the life as prescribed for us by our Lord, and not as being the ones who will be the ultimate losers and failures.

In the meantime, please listen to eminent Muslim scholar Nauman Ali Khan delivering a eye opening lecture on the signs of a loser generation:
