Linguistic Miracle of Ayat ul Kursi - Scholars' Viewpoint

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has been quoted as saying: "Everything has its pinnacle and the pinnacle of the Quran is Surah al-Baqarah. In it there is an ayah which is the greatest in the Qur'an: Ayat al-Kursi" [at-Tirmidhi]

And for this emphasis by none other than the last of the Prophets of Allah that most of the Muslims around the world have memorized this ayat and can be seen hung in the houses, markets or even engraved in  almost all masjids / mosques around the world.

While it is being called the ayah which is the greatest in the Qur'an, for many linguistic scholars, it is also a linguistic miracle from Allah for its every word is meaningful and so rich in its substance. One of the miracles of Ayat ul Kursi is that it is concentric. The ayah is made up of nine sentences, and each sentence is paired with the one concentrically opposite to it, with the fifth sentence being at the centre of the circle.

Here is the Arabic text of the Ayat ul Kursi with English translation:

Allah, the Ever-Living, the Self-Subsisting by Whom all subsist, there is no god but He. Neither slumber seizes Him, nor sleep; to Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth.280 Who is there who might intercede with Him save with His leave? He knows what lies before them and what is hidden from them, whereas they cannot attain anything of His knowledge save what He wills them to attain. His Dominion overspreads the heavens and the earth, and their upholding wearies Him not. He is All-High, All-Glorious.

Coming over to the wisdom contained in these verses. One of the miracles of Ayat ul Kursi is that it is concentric. The ayah is made up of nine sentences, and each sentence is paired with the one concentrically opposite to it, with the fifth sentence being at the centre of the circle. Here is how it is:

Two sentences contain two names of Allah.
Allah – there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence.
And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

Following two sentences deny human attributes from Allah:
لَا تَأْخُذُهُ سِنَةٌ وَلَا نَوْمٌ
Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep.
and their preservation tires Him not.

In the two sentences below, the first verse affirms Allah’s ownership over the heavens and the earth, the second affirms Allah’s kingship over the heavens and the earth:
لَّهُ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ
To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth
His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth,

Next two verses mention something impossible by humans with an exception that depends on His will/permission:
مَن ذَا الَّذِي يَشْفَعُ عِندَهُ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِ
Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission?
and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills.

He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them.
In fact, He knows what is before this sentence and what is after it.

Now watch the video below on the Linguistic Miracle of Ayat ul Kursi as explained by Nouman Ali Khan, born to a Pakistani family, is an American Muslim speaker and Arabic instructor who founded the Bayyinah Institute for Arabic and Qur’anic Studies, after serving as an instructor of Arabic at Nassau Community College. He has been named one of the 500 most influential Muslims in the world by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre of Jordan.
We have shared this video for our readers to go deeper inside what has been explained. For Qur'an was revealed in a grammar of Arabic which was not even known to even the Arabs of the time. Even today, the linguistic of Qur'an has not been understood by scholars in its totality. The Divine Message that the Qur'an contains thus needs to be very carefully read, understood and acted upon over and over again as after every reading new vista will be opened for us.

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is our duty to convey only to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and help us to act upon the commandments of Allah contained therein. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Most powerful Ayat of the Quran: Āyat al-Kursī (The Throne Verse)

The Holy Qur'an encloses in itself the complete Deen or creed of Islam for those who care to listen to Allah and His commandments. Allah, God as per Jews and "partly" as per Christians as their concept of God also includes Jesus and the Holy Spirit, is the omnipotent, the only one that is to be revered and prayed to.

There are many mentions of oneness of Allah, but the most powerful ayat of Holy Qur'an that stresses on the oneness of Allah is Āyat al-Kursī (Surah 2:255), in the second chapter of Holy Qur'an in Surah Al Baqarah (The Cow). In fact this ayat is the most comprehensive statement of the belief in one God. "A believer declares his conviction that the Almighty is the sole owner of all the power and sovereignty and declares that he is pure of any attributes, which do not match his mighty place."

The ayat is so powerful that on a number of occasions the Prophet has stressed the importance of its recitation.
Abu Umamah Al-Bahili (radi Allahu anhu) has been quoted as saying: The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ): said: “Whoever recites Āyat al-Kursī  immediately after each prescribed Prayer, there will be nothing standing between him and his entering Paradise except death.” [an-Nasa’i, Ibn Hibban, ibn Sunni, at-Tabarani, ibn Hibban – Sahih]
The Prophet (S) also said: ‘When you are about to sleep recite Āyat al-Kursī  till the end of the verse for there will remain over you a protection from Allah and no devil will draw near to you until morning.’ (Hisnul Muslim)
Herein under is the Arabic text of Āyat al-Kursī  and its English translation:

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful:
"Āyat al-Kursī is considered to be the widely memorized ayat by the Muslims. And is often seen displayed in Muslim households, masjids and even the place of business to bring prosperity to family and business.." Beside the above two references, there are many attributes attached to the recitation of this most powerful ayat of the Holy Qur'an. Some of these are listed:
  • Reciting  Āyat al-Kursī  and then blowing it upon food and drink brings blessings and abundance.
  • Whosoever reads  Āyat al-Kursī  upon entering the home, Satan runs away from there.
  • The reciter, his children, home, wealth, property and the homes of his neighbours are safe.
  • Whosoever reads  Āyat al-Kursī  together with the last ayats of Surah Baqarah, Devil (s) "Shaitaan" do not enter his home for three days.
  • The Jinn cannot open any utensil upon which  Āyat al-Kursī is read.
  • The thief does not come near it’s reciter.
  • When reciting it whilst retiring to one’s sleeping place, one is protected until the morning. Two angels are deputed to protect him.
  • When recited with the last ayat of Surah Baqarah then the plea of the reciter will not go unattended.
Allâh burdens not a person beyond his scope. He gets reward for that (good) which he has earned, and he is punished for that (evil) which he has earned. “Our Lord! Punish us not if we forget or fall into error, our Lord! Lay not on us a burden like that which You did lay on those before us (Jews and Christians); our Lord! Put not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear. Pardon us and grant us Forgiveness. Have mercy on us. You are our Maulâ (Patron, Supporter and Protector) and give us victory over the disbelieving people.” (Al-Baqarah 2:286)

Now listen to a beautiful recitation of   Āyat al-Kursī  along with its English translation:

An effort has been made to gather explanation of the surahs of the Holy Qur'an from authentic souses and then present a least possible condensed explanation of the surah. However, those wanting detailed explanations and tafsir (exegesis), may refer to sites the references of which are given above.
