Great reward awaits those who fear Allah without seeing Him

Belief in anything is the most difficult to achieve, especially when it comes to Allah, the unseen but reality. It is not necessary to see the creator of anything to believe, like a chair or a car which we see and yet we do not need to know who designed these and who made and manufactured them.  But when it comes to believing in our Creator, we do not need to physically see Him but look at His creations. And His creations are such that could not have been work of a human. 

This is the dilemma the atheists face. They want to see the Creator believe in Him. Despite advancement in science, which is still not able to answer many a mystery of our life. Then how can an ordinary person find the answers to the unseen? Yet there are many, especially Muslims, who believe in One True God, we call Allah, without ever questioning His presence or existence. This what true faith is and for such believers who have an unflinching faith in Allah that Allah promises a great reward for them. 

This is the theme of 12th verse of Surah 67. Al Mulk (The Kingdom):

اِنَّ الَّذِيۡنَ يَخۡشَوۡنَ رَبَّهُمۡ بِالۡغَيۡبِ لَهُمۡ مَّغۡفِرَةٌ وَّاَجۡرٌ كَبِيۡرٌ‏ 
(67:12) Surely forgiveness and a great reward await those who fear Allah without seeing Him.
(Surely forgiveness and a great reward await those) That is, there are two inevitable results of fearing God unseen:

(1) That whatever errors and sins one will have committed because of human weaknesses, will be forgiven provided these were not committed because of fearlessness of God; and

(2) that whatever good acts a man performs on the basis of this belief, he will be rewarded richly for them.

(who fear Allah without seeing Him) The address is to all human beings, whether they are believers or unbelievers. For the believer it contains the admonition that while living his life in the world he should always remember that not only his open and hidden deeds but even his secret intentions and innermost thoughts are not hidden from Allah; and for the unbeliever the warning that he may do whatever he may please fearless of God, but nothing that he does can remain un-noticed and unseen by Him.

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir: The Reward of those Who fear their Lord unseen
Allah informs of he who fears standing before his Lord, being frightened about matters between himself and Allah when he is not in the presence of other people. So he refrains from disobedience and he performs acts of obedience when no one sees him except Allah. Allah mentions that this person will have forgiveness and a great reward. This means that his sins will be remitted and he will be rewarded abundantly. 

This is similar to what has been confirmed in the Two Sahihs:
(There are seven people whom Allah the Exalted will shade in the shade of His Throne on the Day when there will be no shade except its shade.) Then he mentioned that among those people are: (A man who is tempted by a beautiful woman of high social status, but he says: `Verily, I fear Allah.' Another person from among them is a man who gives charity and he conceals it so that his left hand does not know what his right hand spent.) 

Muhammad Asad Explanation:
This is same as the opening of verse 3 of Surah Al Baqarah, wherein it is said: "who believe in [the existence of] that which is beyond the reach of human perception". 

That is Al-ghayb (commonly, and erroneously, translated as "the Unseen") is used in the Qur'an to denote all those sectors or phases of reality which lie beyond the range of human perception and cannot, therefore, be proved or disproved by scientific observation or even adequately comprised within the accepted categories of speculative thought: as, for instance, the existence of God and of a definite purpose underlying the universe, life after death, the real nature of time, the existence of spiritual forces and their inter-action, and so forth. Only a person who is convinced that the ultimate reality comprises far more than our observable environment can attain to belief in God and, thus, to a belief that life has meaning and purpose. By pointing out that it is "a guidance for those who believe in the existence of that which is beyond human perception", the Qur'an says, in effect, that it will - of necessity - remain a closed book to all whose minds cannot accept this fundamental premise.

Yusuf Ali Explanation
Read "unseen" adverbially. To fear the Lord is to love Him so intensely that you fear to do anything which is against His Will, and you do it because you realise Him intensely in your hearts, though you do not see Him with your bodily senses. Nor is it of any consequences whether other people see your love or the consequences that flow from your love, for your good deeds are for the love of Allah and not for show in the eyes of men. Such intensity of love obtains forgiveness for any past, and is indeed rewarded with Allah's love, which is immeasurably precious beyond any merits you may possess.

Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Explanation:
The implication is that these people comprehend their Lord through their vision and intellect and fear Him on this very basis. They do not insist on seeing Him and then believing in Him. 

Imām Amīn Aḥsan Iṣlāḥī writes: … The real test of a person in this world is that by using his intellect and reasoning, he professes belief in what the Almighty has informed him through His prophets. He who succeeded in this test deserves every reward of God, and he who failed in it is like an animal or even worse even though he might be a great philosopher and a scientist. (Amīn Aḥsan Iṣlāḥī, Tadabbur-i Qur’ān, vol. 8, 495)

Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:  
The phrase ' beyond the reach of human perception' expresses the meaning of the Qur'anic word ghayb. In its use in this verse, it includes their fear of God whom they have never seen, as well as their fear of Him when they are alone, unseen by any human eye. Both are fine qualities, reflecting a pure feeling and a profound understanding which together qualify a person to receive what the verse expresses in general terms as "forgiveness and a rich reward." To watch God when one is alone, unseen by any other human being is the gauge of a heart's sensitivity and the quality that keeps conscience alive.

Concluding remarks: In the light of the above quoted verse and its explanation by eminent scholars, it must be understood that the presence of One True God, we call Allah, falls beyond the realm of human perception. Yet His signs are ample proof of His existence, which are far more adequate for us to have firm belief in Him without the need to see Him. Those who deny His existence, like the atheists, also from withing their hearts may have doubts on their rather ill-founded belief. And it is because of this false belief, many of them have embraced Islam for Islam answers all questions regarding the existence of Allah.
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 
وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

Seek forgiveness from whom you have wronged for its requital on Judgement Day may be very heavy

Our worldly life is awesome for here we do not feel the pain we have caused on others by our words, actions or attitude. And not everyone is in a position to repay the same coin to make good the loss incurred on him.

But then those who are least forgiving when harming others are generally unaware of the requital they may have to undergo when the most superior of Allah will be established on the Judgment Day and none will be let go unless he pays the full compensation for the harm, he did to others in one's worldly life. 

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in one of his Hadiths have warned such fearless sinners of the requital they will have to undergo on the Judgement Day. This Hadith is mentioned Jami` at-Tirmidhi  (37 - Chapters on the description of the Day of Judgement / كتاب صفة القيامة والرقائق والورع عن رسول الله صلى الله / Chapter # 2 What Has Been Related About the Matter of the Reckoning and Requital / باب مَا جَاءَ فِي شَأْنِ الْحِسَابِ وَالْقِصَاصِ  ) as Hadith number # 2419:

Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said:
"May Allah have mercy upon a servant who has wronged his brother in his honor or his wealth, then he comes to him to seek his pardon before (his right) is taken, when he has no Dinar nor Dirham. Then if he has any rewards, it will be taken from his rewards, and if he has no rewards, then some of his (brothers) bad deeds will be levied upon him."

[Abu 'Eisa said:] This Hadith is Sahih [Gharib as a narration of Sa'eed Al-Maqburi]. Malik bin Anas also reported it from Sa'eed A]-Maqburl, from Abu Hurairah from the Prophet SAW, and it is similar in meaning.

Arabic Text:
حَدَّثَنَا هَنَّادٌ، وَنَصْرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْكُوفِيُّ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا الْمُحَارِبِيُّ، عَنْ أَبِي خَالِدٍ، يَزِيدَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَبِي أُنَيْسَةَ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ "‏ رَحِمَ اللَّهُ عَبْدًا كَانَتْ لأَخِيهِ عِنْدَهُ مَظْلَمَةٌ فِي عِرْضٍ أَوْ مَالٍ فَجَاءَهُ فَاسْتَحَلَّهُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُؤْخَذَ وَلَيْسَ ثَمَّ دِينَارٌ وَلاَ دِرْهَمٌ فَإِنْ كَانَتْ لَهُ حَسَنَاتٌ أُخِذَ مِنْ حَسَنَاتِهِ وَإِنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ لَهُ حَسَنَاتٌ حَمَّلُوا عَلَيْهِ مِنْ سَيِّئَاتِهِمْ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ غَرِيبٌ مِنْ حَدِيثِ سَعِيدٍ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ ‏.‏ وَقَدْ رَوَاهُ مَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ عَنْ سَعِيدٍ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم نَحْوَهُ ‏.‏
Grade:  Sahih (Darussalam)

This Hadith gives out a clear warning to all of us who have wronged someone in this life to go and seek forgiveness and make the damages good before angel of death gets us. For if we do not do this, on the Day of Judgement, we will not be robbed of our goodies (if any) to make the requital possible. And if our goodies fall short, then the sins of the aggrieved will be taken away and added into our account to balance out the balance sheet. So, time is now, which is running fast, to seek forgiveness from all those whom we have wronged, lest we are left with nothing good on Judgement Day - and our punishment will be very severe. May Allah help us do this now before time runs out. Ameen.

Woe to every scandal-monger and backbiter

One of the evilest things that a man can do is talk ill of someone in his absences or always being on the lookout of finding some fault in one's character to defame or bring bad name to him. Such heinous acts are detested at a lot many places in Qur'an and Divine warnings and cautions have been pronounced for anyone indulging in fault finding or backbiting.

But despite these Divine warnings and the punishment for such acts, we find many of our brethren always on the lookout for some character failing in others and using these for their own benefit by degrading the others in the eyes of the people. Although it is good to apprise someone of his weak points individually, exposing these publicly is not only morally or ethically correct but also against the Divine commandments.

We have already shared a number of such Divine warnings from Qur'an in our earlier posts (links to these given at the end of this post). And today we share yet another verse, in fact the very first verse of Surah. 104 Humazah, which means The One who Slanders, to stress upon the gravity and severity of this act to caution our readers to refrain from backbiting, slandering and fault finding. This verse is specially for those who maliciously try to uncover real or imaginary faults in others.

The meaning and explanation of the following verse would reveal that this way of making fun of others and demeaning them through gestures is the same as what can even be witnessed today in caricatures and cartoons depicted in the newspapers of today as well as in the statements of leaders.

While we have already posted a number of posts on the same theme, the ever-increasing use of social and print media to debase one's opponent has necessitated to continue reminding those involved in social blackmailing through unearthing scandals. In fact, now a days, slandering and character bashing has become so common that these are not taken or considered as something bad for their proponents believe that it is fair to use such tactics to subdue one's opponents. And by doing so, every form of lie and underground black world is mobilized to such a great extent that the mind of ordinary people starts to accept the lie. 

Such scandal monger and backbiters fail to realize the gravity of their offence which is strictly forbidden in Islam and grave consequences for such actions and tactics have been promised for the sinners. Rember it is said in one of the Hadiths of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: A true Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hands another Muslim is safe. 

This post is also applicable for all those non-Muslims who are engaged in passing slanders on Islam and Prophet Muhammad and debasing his revered personality just to outshine their own beliefs, most of which are tangent to earlier scriptures and that of Islam.

Now in this backdrop, read the selected verse of today:

وَيْلٌ لِّكُلِّ هُمَزَةٍ لُّمَزَةٍ
(104:1) (Woe to every (kind of) scandal-monger and backbiter)
The words used in the original are "هُمَزَةٍ لُّمَزَةٍ" humazat il-lumazah. In Arabic hamz and lamz are so close in meaning that they are sometimes used as synonyms and sometimes with a little difference in the shade of meaning. But this difference is not definite and clear, for the meaning given to lamz by some Arabic speaking people themselves is given to lamz by other Arabic speaking peoples. On the contrary, the meaning given to harm by some people is given to hamz by others. Here, since both the words appear together and the words humazat il-lumazat have been used, they give the meaning that it has become a practice with the slanderer that he insults and holds others in contempt habitually. He raises his finger and winks at one man, finds fault with the lineage and person of another, taunts one in the face and backbites another; creates differences between friends and stirs up divisions between brothers; calls the people names and satirizes and defames them. 

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir
Al-Hammaz refers to (slander) by speech, and Al-Lammaz refers to (slander) by action. This means that the person finds fault with people and belittles them. 

An explanation of this has already preceded in the discussion of Allah's statement, (هَمَّازٍ مَّشَّآءِ بِنَمِيمٍ Hammaz, going about with slander) (68:11) Ibn `Abbas said, "Humazah Lumazah means one who reviles and disgraces (others).'' Mujahid said, "Al-Humazah is with the hand and the eye, and Al-Lumazah is with the tongue.'

Yusuf Ali Explanation (Woe to every (kind of) scandal-monger and backbiter)
Three vices are here condemned in the strongest terms: (1) scandal-mongering, talking or suggesting evil of men or women by word or innuendo, or behaviour, or mimicry, or sarcasm, or insult; (2) detracting from their character behind their backs, even if the things suggested are true, where the motive is evil; (3) piling up wealth, not for use and service to those who need it, but in miserly hoards, as if such hoards can prolong the miser's life or give him immortality: miserliness is itself a kind of scandal.

Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Explanation:
The first of these relates to gestures and actions and the second to the tongue. Imām Amīn Aḥsan Iṣlāḥī writes:

… Making evil gestures and slandering others are two aspects of the same character. When the purpose is to make fun of others and to degrade and ridicule them, both are employed. At times, ridiculing and demeaning others through gestures can prove sharper and more effective than the tongue, and perhaps this is the reason for placing هُمَزَة before لُمَزَة . (Amīn Aḥsan Iṣlāḥī, Tadabbur-i Qur’ān, vol. 9, 548)

Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:
Islam despises this type of person whose characteristics are diametrically opposed to its own high standards of morality. Islam emphatically forbids mockery and ridicule of other people as well as deliberate fault-finding. But in this case the Qur’an describes these actions as sordid and ugly, delivering a stern warning to anyone who indulges in them. This suggests that the surah is referring to an actual case of some unbelievers subjecting the Prophet and the believers to their taunts and slander. The reply to these actions comes in the form of a strong prohibition and awesome warning. There are some reports which name specific individuals as being the slanderers meant here, but these are not authentic, so we will not discuss them, but instead content ourselves with general observations.

Post burial etiquette as taught by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Except for one's own death, man is always in a hurry - impatient to get over things as soon as possible. This impatience is observed more often than not in the burial of one's acquaintances. No sooner the dead body is lowered down and the grave closed, men become restless to leave the graveyard as early as possible, what they do not realize that the person being left behind in the grave will be subjected to questioning by the angels, called Munkar and Nakirr (in Islam) and will undergo unimaginable test unknown to the living. 

Munkar and Nakir (Arabic: منكر ونكير) (English translation: "The Denied and The Denier") in Islamic eschatology, are angels who test the faith of the dead in their graves. If the deceased answers correctly, the time spent awaiting the resurrection is pleasant and may enter heaven. Those who do not answer as described above are chastised until the day of judgment.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ had always warned and cautioned his companions to the torment of the grave and whenever he accompanied a dead to its grave, would stay back and pray for its forgiveness and advised his companions to follow the suit too.

One of the Hadiths of the revered Prophet about post burial etiquette is mentioned in Sunan Abi Dawud (Book # 21 Funerals (Kitab Al-Jana'iz) / كتاب الجنائز / Chapter # 1202 Praying for Forgiveness for the Deceased by the Grave at the Time of Departing (Burial) / باب الاِسْتِغْفَارِ عِنْدَ الْقَبْرِ لِلْمَيِّتِ فِي وَقْتِ الاِنْصِرَافِ ) as Hadith number # 3221, quoted herein under:

Narrated by thman ibn Affan: Whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) became free from burying the dead, he used to stay at him (i.e. his grave) and say: Seek forgiveness for your brother, and beg steadfastness for him, for he will be questioned now.

Arabic Text:
حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُوسَى الرَّازِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ بَحِيرٍ، عَنْ هَانِئٍ، مَوْلَى عُثْمَانَ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ، قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم إِذَا فَرَغَ مِنْ دَفْنِ الْمَيِّتِ وَقَفَ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ ‏ "‏ اسْتَغْفِرُوا لأَخِيكُمْ وَسَلُوا لَهُ التَّثْبِيتَ فَإِنَّهُ الآنَ يُسْأَلُ ‏"‏‏.‏ 
Grade: Sahih (Al-Albani)

One does not know how terrible would be the end game be in the grave, but once Prophet Muhammad ﷺ passed by a grave, he stood by it with anguished face and uprooted a small plant and planted on the grave. His companions asked the reason why. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ replied that he could hear the cries of the dead from inside the grave who was being subjected to torture for he did not care his urine falling on his clothes while urinating. This is but one example - the way we lived our life will have a reciprocating treatment in the grave. So, beware of our actions now before we face the torment of the grave.

Also, stay for a while when the grave is closed and supplicate as much as possible for the forgiveness of the dead of his sins and specially pray so that his stay in the grave is eased and is saved off the torment of the grave. 
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 
وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Whoever guards against the unclear matters, will protect his religion and his honor

The Divine Commandments are very clear and explicit. One is either told to do a thing or refrain from doing it. For example, it is made very clear flesh of which animal is allowed and which is not allowed. In this case, the flesh of swine/pig is strictly prohibited. Now if someone tries to misinterpret the Quranic verses to suit what he wishes to do, he is going against the will and commandment of God.

We must therefore be very clear what is lawful and what is not lawful and never ever try to find a middle approach which makes our actions doubtful and against the Islamic laws. 

This is the very theme of Hadith of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ being shared today which stresses on following the commandments of what is evident: That is the DO and DON'T.  Anything in between these two is doubtful and one must refrain from doing it.

This Hadith is quoted in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: Book (#22) of Musaqah - كتاب المساقاة   / Chapter # 20 Taking that which is lawful and leaving that which is unclear / باب أَخْذِ الْحَلاَلِ وَتَرْكِ الشُّبُهَاتِ ‏‏‏) as Hadith number # 1599 a as under:

Nu'man b. Bashir (Allah be pleased with him) reported:

I heard Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as having said this (and Nu'man) pointed towards his ears with his fingers): What is lawful is evident and what is unlawful is evident, and in between them are the things doubtful which many people do not know. So, he who guards against doubtful things keeps his religion and honour blameless, and he who indulges in doubtful things indulges in fact in unlawful things, just as a shepherd who pastures his animals round a preserve will soon pasture them in it. Beware, every king has a preserve, and the things God his decaled unlawful are His preserves. Beware, in the body there is a piece of flesh; if it is sound, the whole body is sound and if it is corrupt the whole body is corrupt, and hearken it is the heart.

Arabic Text:
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ نُمَيْرٍ الْهَمْدَانِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، حَدَّثَنَا زَكَرِيَّاءُ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ، عَنِ النُّعْمَانِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ وَأَهْوَى النُّعْمَانُ بِإِصْبَعَيْهِ إِلَى أُذُنَيْهِ ‏ "‏ إِنَّ الْحَلاَلَ بَيِّنٌ وَإِنَّ الْحَرَامَ بَيِّنٌ وَبَيْنَهُمَا مُشْتَبِهَاتٌ لاَ يَعْلَمُهُنَّ كَثِيرٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ فَمَنِ اتَّقَى الشُّبُهَاتِ اسْتَبْرَأَ لِدِينِهِ وَعِرْضِهِ وَمَنْ وَقَعَ فِي الشُّبُهَاتِ وَقَعَ فِي الْحَرَامِ كَالرَّاعِي يَرْعَى حَوْلَ الْحِمَى يُوشِكُ أَنْ يَرْتَعَ فِيهِ أَلاَ وَإِنَّ لِكُلِّ مَلِكٍ حِمًى أَلاَ وَإِنَّ حِمَى اللَّهِ مَحَارِمُهُ أَلاَ وَإِنَّ فِي الْجَسَدِ مُضْغَةً إِذَا صَلَحَتْ صَلَحَ الْجَسَدُ كُلُّهُ وَإِذَا فَسَدَتْ فَسَدَ الْجَسَدُ كُلُّهُ أَلاَ وَهِيَ الْقَلْبُ ‏"‏ ‏.‏

The above quoted Hadith draws the battlelines and explicitly disallows the no man's land between the lawful and the unlawful. There are no ambiguities in Divine Commandments, every command must be followed in true letter and spirit.  Let us never try to follow a thing which is doubtful for it may lead to violation of laws and rules of Allah. The best course of action should be to leave the doubtful straightaway and restrict oneself to what is allowed and what is not allowed.

Qur’an provides guidance to those who believe in the "Ghaib"

Belief in the unseen is one of the most difficult things to perceive. Yet, men since time immemorial have BELIEVED that there is Deity mightier than all that created this universe and controls the movement of everything in it. How do we develop this understanding, otherwise called Belief and Faith? For one thing, Divine revelations were passed on to some of the most pious and character strong men, we know as prophets and messengers. 

When these Divine revelations came to be known to the man, many believed while many did not. Those who believed found the relevance of what was said and what they saw around them. The celestial world above, the dawn of day and night, change of weather and growth of plants and all living beings all started to make sense that all that was seen was being managed and controlled by a power mightier than all, matchless to any earthly being. We thus came to know that there exists One Supreme Being, as mentioned in the successive Divine Scriptures, that is the Master of the entire universe.

On the contrary, there were many who did not believe in there being a Super Power because it was not seen anywhere. The present-day atheists are this branch of people who want scientific proof of everything. In fact, they "rubbish" the divine Scriptures for these do not prove anything scientifically. But what they fail to understand is that Divine Scriptures are not books of sciences but books of SIGNS. However, those with wisdom read the Godly signs and realize the reality of One Singular Deity that controls the world. We also come to know the reality of angels, heavens, and fate of earlier people who believed and those who did not. Through these Divine Books we come to know creation of man, their enticement by Satan and expulsion thereof to the earth.

Here one thing more emerges that is sometimes questioned: What is Ghaib and is it Ghaib for the Creator of the universe as well?  The 3rd verse of Surah 2. Al Baqarah (The Cow) answers this question. First read the verse and its explanation and then we conclude with a plausible answer. In fact, this verse is continuation of the second verse of the Surah which says: This is the Book (Qur'an)about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah. Now connect this verse with the 3rd verse:

الَّذِيۡنَ يُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ بِالۡغَيۡبِ وَ يُقِيۡمُوۡنَ الصَّلٰوةَ وَمِمَّا رَزَقۡنٰهُمۡ يُنۡفِقُوۡنَۙ‏ 
(2:3) for those who believe in the existence of that which is beyond the reach of perception, who establish Prayer and spend out of what We have provided them,
(For those who believe in the existence of that which is beyond the reach of perception) The second condition for obtaining guidance from the Qur'an is that one must believe in the "unseen" -- those realities which cannot be perceived by the senses and which do not come within human experience and observation, e.g. the essence and attributes of Allah, Angels, Revelation, Heaven, Hell, etc. These things must be taken on trust from the experts (Prophets) just as we do in many cases in the physical world. Therefore, only such a person, who believes in the "unseen", can benefit from the Guidance of the Qur'an. As for the one who believes only in those things which can be seen, tasted and smelt, or can be measured and weighed, cannot get any guidance from this Book. 

(who establish Prayer) The third condition to benefit from the Qur'an is that one should be willing and ready to put into practice the teachings of the Qur'an. As the Salat (Prayer) is the first and foremost obligatory duty enjoined by the Qur'an, it is the practical proof and permanent test of the sincerity of one's Faith. Therefore, after a person's profession of Islam, the moment he hears the call to the Prayer (which sounds regularly five times a day from every mosque in the Muslim world), he should join the congregation for the Salat, because this determines whether he is sincere in his profession or not. If he does not attend to the call and join the congregation, it is an indication that he is not sincere in his profession. It must also be noted that "iqama-tus-Salat¦(the establishment of Prayer is the comprehensive term. It means that Salat should be performed in congregation and that permanent arrangements should be made for it in every habitation; otherwise, Salat will not be considered to have been established, even if every inhabitant of a place offers the Salat individually.

(and spend out of what We have provided them) The fourth condition to benefit from the Qur' an is that one should be willing to part with one's money according to the instructions of the Book in order to render the rights of Allah and Man and should make monetary sacrifices for the cause of Islam which he has accepted.

Muhammad Asad Explanation:
Al-ghayb (commonly, and erroneously, translated as "the Unseen") is used in the Qur'an to denote all those sectors or phases of reality which lie beyond the range of human perception and cannot, therefore, be proved or disproved by scientific observation or even adequately comprised within the accepted categories of speculative thought: as, for instance, the existence of God and of a definite purpose underlying the universe, life after death, the real nature of time, the existence of spiritual forces and their inter-action, and so forth. Only a person who is convinced that the ultimate reality comprises far more than our observable environment can attain to belief in God and, thus, to a belief that life has meaning and purpose. By pointing out that it is "a guidance for those who believe in the existence of that which is beyond human perception", the Qur'an says, in effect, that it will - of necessity - remain a closed book to all whose minds cannot accept this fundamental premise.

Ar-rizq ("provision of sustenance") applies to all that may be of benefit to man, whether it be concrete (like food, property, offspring, etc.) or abstract (like knowledge, piety, etc.). The "spending on others" is mentioned here in one breath with God-consciousness and prayer because it is precisely in such selfless acts that true piety comes to its full fruition. It should be borne in mind that the verb anfaqa (lit., "he spent") is always used in the Qur'an to denote spending freely on, or as a gift to, others, whatever the motive may be.

Yusuf Ali Explanation
All bounties proceed from God. They may be physical gifts, e.g., food, clothing, houses, gardens, wealth, etc. or intangible gifts, e.g., influence, power, birth and the opportunities flowing from it, health, talents, etc. or spiritual gifts, e.g, insight into good and evil, understanding of men, the capacity for love, etc. We are to use all in humility and moderation. But we are also to give out of every one of them something that contributes to the well-being of others. We are to be neither ascetics nor luxurious sybarites, neither selfish misers nor thoughless prodigals.

Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Explanation:
The actual words are: يُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ بِالۡغَيۡبِ. In the opinion of this writer, the particle ب denotes a ظرف (nomen locus). The implication is that they profess belief while remaining in الْغَيْبِ. This means that they are not slaves to what can be observed or is tangible; they have a spiritual and intellectual existence and hence do not insist that they will only accept those facts which they can behold. They tread their way in the light of their intellect and they accept all those things to which their intellect testifies or nature points to and in order to fulfil the obligations entailed by professing faith in these realities are also ready to go as far as to sacrifice their material needs to fulfil them.

Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:
The most essential quality of the God-fearing believers is their conscious, active moral unity that enriches their souls with profound belief in the imperceptible, or ghayb, dedication to their religious obligations, recognition of all God’s messengers, and unshakeable certainty in the hereafter. Such are the ingredients that make the Muslim faith a complete whole and distinguishes believers from unbelievers. Such a thorough outlook is worthy of God’s final message to man, which was intended as a focus and a guide for all human endeavour on this earth. Man is called upon to adopt this message and lead a complete and wholesome life, guided by its light which shapes man’s feelings, actions, beliefs and ways of living and behaviour.

Concluding remarks: It may be added here that some question the word "Ghaib" and ask is there anything which beyond the perception of even God? Nay, it is not. In fact, whenever the word Ghaib is used in Qur'an, it means things hidden from man or from his perception. Nothing can be hidden from the Deity Who creates everything. So, the realm of Ghaib is from the perspective of man and not God.

After having read this verse, and connecting it with the previous verse, it can be concluded that Qur'an provides guidance to those who are:
  • Conscious of Allah
  • Believe in the existence of that which is beyond the reach of perception
  • Establish Prayer
  • And spend out of what We have provided them

General rule of Intercession in Qur'an

In our series of posts on Selected verses from Qur'an, we share the general rule of intercession as mentioned in the 85th verse of Surah 4. An Nisa (The Women). This rule applies to the effort put in by a person to attract others to good, which leaves a positive and pleasing impact not on people but on society as a whole. At this same time, there are others, who are obsessed with evil within, and try to entice others to follow the evil ways. 

That is, different people behave differently and with different results. Some urge others to exert themselves for the cause of Allah and to exalt His Word and they get its reward. There are others who spread misunderstandings among the people about Allah's cause, discourage the Muslims and try to dissuade them from exalting the Word of Allah and thus incur punishment.

In fact, there is more evil that is being spread than good for it suits many who want chaos and disharmony among the Muslims. The spread of Islamophobia is in fact a step in this direction to mislead Muslims and derail them from their faith and encourage them to fall into their trap to suit their interests and harm that of the Muslims. Let us read the selected verse of today and see how scholars of Islam interpret it:

مَنۡ يَّشۡفَعۡ شَفَاعَةً حَسَنَةً يَّكُنۡ لَّهٗ نَصِيۡبٌ مِّنۡهَا​ ۚ وَمَنۡ يَّشۡفَعۡ شَفَاعَةً سَيِّئَةً يَّكُنۡ لَّهٗ كِفۡلٌ مِّنۡهَا​ ؕ وَكَانَ اللّٰهُ عَلٰى كُلِّ شَىۡءٍ مُّقِيۡتًا‏ 
(4:85) He who intercedes in a good cause shall share in its good result, and he who intercedes in an evil cause shall share in its burden. Allah watches over everything.

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir
(Whosoever intercedes for a good cause, will have the reward thereof;) meaning, whoever intercedes in a matter that produces good results, will acquire a share in that good.

(And whosoever intercedes for an evil cause, will have a share in its burden.) meaning, he will carry a burden due to what resulted from his intercession and intention. For instance, it is recorded in the Sahih that the Prophet said, (Intercede and you will gain a reward for it. Yet, Allah shall decide whatever He wills by the words of His Prophet.) Mujahid bin Jabr said, "This Ayah was revealed about the intercession of people on behalf of each other.'

Yusuf Ali Explanation
In this fleeting world's chances Allah's providence and justice may not always appear plain to our eyes. But we are asked to believe that if we help and support a good cause, we share in all its credit and in its eventual victory. And conversely, we cannot support a bad cause without sharing in all its evil consequences. If appearances seem against this faith, let us not be deceived by appearances. For Allah has power over all things.

Qur'an Wiki Explanation:
In the context of God’s Messenger’s exhortation to the believers to fight, towards the end of the passage, and the reference to those who discourage and dampen the spirit to fight, at its beginning, the sūrah states a general rule regarding intercession. The statement implies instruction, advice and co-operation. “Whoever rallies to a good cause shall have a share in its [benefit], and whoever rallies to an evil cause shall have a share in its [burden]. God watches over everything.” (Verse 85)
 
Whoever participates in mobilizing and encouraging and supporting others to fight for the cause of God will receive his due share of the reward for the fighting and its consequences. But those who promote demoralization and discouragement will bear responsibility for the outcome of their exhortations. The Arabic term kill chosen in this context suggests liability for the consequences as well as the actions themselves.
 
This is a universal principle, which applies to intercession for good or for evil. The
 
Qur’ān often establishes a general principle through the discussion of a particular issue or event, linking the two together and referring the whole question to God Almighty. He is the source of everything and the source of all power, as the Arabic word used in commenting on the verse indicates: “God watches over everything.” (Verse 85)

Let us join hands with those whose intentions are pure and clean, who intend to do good for others. At the same time, we should be on the lookout for those wanting harm to spread by the easily fooled straight Muslims. If we look around more evil is being injected through social media that is adversely affecting the Muslim youth and taking them away from the teachings of Islam. Beware, especially parents and elders, and educate your children to look for good rather than evil, for consequences of good are rewards and blessings, and consequences of bad and evil are adverse on morals and life.
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 
وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.
