Do not make your sins public

Most of the sins are committed in the darkness of the night, perhaps to not to expose one's face to the world for may be the sinner is held in high esteem to others otherwise. But if one commits sins, at night or hidden from the world even during the day, and then boasts of his sins to others during the day? This act is one of the most disliked acts in the eyes of our Lord. For when one's sins had been hidden by the darkness, exposing these to public means one's arrogance and so called triumphant feat to impress others.

In one of his Hadiths, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has conveyed to his companions that many a sins of man may be forgiven, if duly repented, but the one who commits sins in public or makes his committed sins known to others will never be forgiven. This Hadith is mentioned in Sahi al-Bukhārī  (Book 78 - Good Manners and Form (Al-Adab) /  كتاب الأدب / Chapter 60:  A believer should conceal what sins he may commit / باب  سَتْرِ الْمُؤْمِنِ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ) as Hadith 6069, given herein under:

Narrated by Abu Huraira:

I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) saying. "All the sins of my followers will be forgiven except those of the Mujahirin (those who commit a sin openly or disclose their sins to the people). An example of such disclosure is that a person commits a sin at night and though Allah screens it from the public, then he comes in the morning, and says, 'O so-and-so, I did such-and-such (evil) deed yesterday,' though he spent his night screened by his Lord (none knowing about his sin) and in the morning he removes Allah's screen from himself."

Arabic Text:

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَخِي ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ، يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ ‏ "‏ كُلُّ أُمَّتِي مُعَافًى إِلاَّ الْمُجَاهِرِينَ، وَإِنَّ مِنَ الْمَجَانَةِ أَنْ يَعْمَلَ الرَّجُلُ بِاللَّيْلِ عَمَلاً، ثُمَّ يُصْبِحَ وَقَدْ سَتَرَهُ اللَّهُ، فَيَقُولَ يَا فُلاَنُ عَمِلْتُ الْبَارِحَةَ كَذَا 

The essence of above quoted Hadith is that while Allah shields the sin of a man by covering him by the blanket of darkness of the night and expects him to repent and seek forgiveness, or even if he  committed a sin during the day unseen by the others, it is unbecoming of him to boast his evil act even thought his sin was covered by the night. This does not mean that one should commit sins at night or unseen and keep quiet. This means while Allah provides cover for all of us, we must honour the blessing of Allah and DO NOT COMMIT SINS AT ALL. And if at all evil overpowers us to commit a sin or ill deed, we must keep it to us and hide it from others. And immediately repent our bad deed and seek forgiveness of Allah.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. Ramadan: Concessions for travelers and the sick

The sacred month of Ramdan is almost around the corner. This is a month which Muslims all over the world await so eagerly for it is one of the blessed months of Islamic Calander and embodies in itself great rewards and blessings. The sentiments are so high during Ramadan that even children want to keep fast and do not want to deprive them of the blessings that their elders would receive. 

Unlike other religions, wherein the fasting fall in rather cool and hospitable environment on fixed dates, Ramadan falls every year ten days earlier than the last Ramadan of the previous year. This is so because of following the Lunar Calander rather than the Gregorian Calander generally adopted worldwide.

When reading the 185th verses as mentioned below, it must be understood that the regulations are again and again coupled with an insistence on two things: (a) the facilities and concessions given, and (b) the spiritual significance of the fast, without which it is like an empty shell without a kernel. If we realize this, we shall look upon Ramadhan, not as a burden, but as a blessing, and shall be duly grateful for the lead given to us in this matter.

It would be interesting to note that the very first mention of the word 'Qur'an' in the Mushaf is in Surah al-Baqarah 2:185. We also know that the Qur'an was revealed in the month of Ramadan. The word, رمضان Ramadan occurs only once in the Qur'an. So, the very first mention of the Qur'an is in the Ayat of Ramadan, the month in which it was revealed.

شَهۡرُ رَمَضَانَ الَّذِىۡٓ اُنۡزِلَ فِيۡهِ الۡقُرۡاٰنُ هُدًى لِّلنَّاسِ وَ بَيِّنٰتٍ مِّنَ الۡهُدٰى وَالۡفُرۡقَانِۚ فَمَنۡ شَهِدَ مِنۡكُمُ الشَّهۡرَ فَلۡيَـصُمۡهُ ؕ وَمَنۡ کَانَ مَرِيۡضًا اَوۡ عَلٰى سَفَرٍ فَعِدَّةٌ مِّنۡ اَيَّامٍ اُخَرَؕ يُرِيۡدُ اللّٰهُ بِکُمُ الۡيُسۡرَ وَلَا يُرِيۡدُ بِکُمُ الۡعُسۡرَ وَلِتُکۡمِلُوا الۡعِدَّةَ وَلِتُکَبِّرُوا اللّٰهَ عَلٰى مَا هَدٰٮكُمۡ وَلَعَلَّکُمۡ تَشۡكُرُوۡنَ‏ 

(2:185) During the month of Ramadan the Qur'an was sent down as a guidance to the people with Clear Signs of the true guidance and as the Criterion (between right and wrong). So those of you who live to see that month should fast it, and whoever is sick or on a journey should fast the same number of other days instead. Allah wants ease and not hardship for you so that you may complete the number of days required, magnify Allah for what He has guided you to, and give thanks to Him.

It has been left to the option of the individual to observe or not to observe fasts during a journey. Some of the Companions of the Holy Prophet observed fasts and some did not when they were on a journey with him and neither raised any objection against the other. The Holy Prophet himself sometimes observed fasts on a journey and sometimes did not. Once he saw people gathered round a man who had fallen to the ground and asked what was the matter with him. He was told that he had become too weak to stand on account of observing fasts; he remarked that it was no virtue to observe fasts in such a condition.

During war time, he used to issue orders for postponing the fasts. Hadrat 'Umar has related that they did not observe fasts twice during the month of Ramadan when they went to war under the command of the Holy Prophet: on the occasion of the battle of Badr and at the conquest of Makkah. Ibn 'Umar says that on the eve of the conquest of Makkah, the Holy Prophet declared, "As we are going to fight our enemy you should postpone your fasts so that you may conserve your strength to tight." 'There is no clear injunction from the Holy Prophet for the prescription of a minimum standard of distance for postponing the fasts. His Companions also differed in practice with regard to the standard. But it is obvious that the fast may be postponed for that distance which is commonly understood to be a journey and in which one begins to feel like one is on a journey.

There is a difference of opinion as to whether the people of a city, which is attacked by an enemy, can postpone the fast for the sake of Jihad, in spite of being the residents. Some scholars do not allow this. But Imam Ibn Taimiyyah has maintained with strong arguments that postponement of the fast under such circumstances is permissible.  

Allah is so bountiful that He does not want to deprive His servants of the blessings of fasting. Therefore, He has not confined it to the month of Ramadan but has opened another way for its completion for those who fail to complete it during this month for genuine reasons. They should make up the deficiency by observing fast on other days in order to show their gratitude for the revelation of the Qur'an during the month of Ramadan.

It is clear from this verse that fasting in Ramadan has been prescribed not only as a form of worship and a training for piety, but also to show gratitude for the great blessing of the Revelation of the Qur'an during the month of Ramadan. And the best way to show gratitude for a favour is to fulfil the object for which it was bestowed and to prepare oneself for its completion as best as one can. The object for which Allah has bestowed the Qur'an upon us is to reveal His Will so that we may fulfil it ourselves and persuade others to do the same. Fasting provides the best training for the fulfilment of this object and is both a devotion and a sign of gratitude for the favour shown in the form of the Qur'an.

Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:

This verse establishes fasting in Ramadan as obligatory for all healthy non- travelling Muslims, with no concessions except for the elderly, as pointed out above: “Whoever of you is present in that month shall fast throughout the month.” It has thus become binding on all Muslims who either see the new moon of the lunar month of Ramadan themselves or learn of it by any other reliable means, to observe the fast in Ramadan. But as this is a general order applicable to all, a reiteration of the concession given in special cases immediately follows: “But he who is ill or on a journey shall fast instead the same number of days later on.”

The sūrah gives the Muslims yet another incentive to keep the fast: “God desires that you have ease. He does not desire that you be afflicted with hardship.” This statement encapsulates the fundamental principle on which all Islamic religious duties are founded. They are intended to be easy, not arduous. This indicates a generous and realistic outlook on life as a whole. It instils in the Muslim heart a tolerant, easy and agreeable attitude. Religious and social activities and responsibilities are discharged with ease, confidence and assurance, in the happy knowledge that God’s purpose is to enable man to go through life with the minimum of hardship or discomfort.

To complete a whole month, sick people or those who travel in Ramadan and avail themselves of the special concession are required to make up for days missed by fasting an equal number of days at a later date in the year: “You are, however, required to complete the necessary number of days.”

Fasting is an occasion to celebrate God’s guidance, glory and grace. Hence the requirement “to extol and glorify God for having guided you aright and to tender your thanks.” It is a time during which believers can feel and appreciate God’s favours and reciprocate with thanks, submission and gratitude. In so doing, Muslims cultivate the precious and vital quality of taqwā, or God-fearing; a main objective of fasting.

Thus, we can see how evident God’s grace is in the imposition of the duty of fasting which, on the face of it, seems hard and demanding. We can clearly see its educational and disciplinary benefits for a nation being prepared for the leadership of mankind, guided by a genuine fear of God, a keen sense of accountability, and a vigorous conscience.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.

Ramadan: Reward of Fasting in Ramadan (Hadith Qudsi)

Alhamdolillah, the sacred and most blessed and rewarding month of Ramadan for year 2024 is just days away. Muslims around the world await this blessed month eagerly to bag as much blessings and rewards from Allah, for fasting is an act of worship for which Allah is pleased to reward His servants for they undergo restrictions and abstain from all Halal things during the course of fasting.

We share a Hadith Qudsi as attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and shared on the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) who has the singular honour of sharing most of the authentic Hadiths of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has been quoted as saying:

Allah (mighty and sublime be He) says: Fasting is Mine and it is I who give reward for it. [A man] gives up his sexual passion, his food and his drink for my sake. Fasting is like a shield, and he who fasts has two joys: a joy when he breaks his fast and a joy when he meets his Lord. The change in the breath of the mouth of him who fasts is better in Allah's estimation than the smell of musk. 

It was related by al-Bukhari (also by Muslim, Malik, at-Tirmidhi, an-Nasa'i and Ibn Majah).

Arabic Text:

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ، عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: " يَقُولُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: الصَّوْمُ لِي، وَأَنَا أَجْزِي بِهِ، يَدَعُ شَهْوَتَهُ وَأَكْلَهُ وَشُرْبَهُ مِنْ أَجْلِي، وَالصَّوْمُ جُنَّةٌ(1)، وَلِلصَّائِمِ فَرْحَتَانِ: فَرْحَةٌ حِينَ يُفْطِرُ، وَفَرْحَةٌ حِينَ يَلْقَى رَبَّهُ، وَلَخُلُوفُ(2) فَمِ الصَّائِمِ أَطْيَبُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ مِنْ رِيحِ الْمِسْكِ".

رواه البخاري (وكذلك مسلم ومالك والترمذي النسائي وابن ماجه)

How blessed are the Muslims that none other than Allah Himself promises immense rewards for them for fasting during the month of Ramadan. And how unfortunate would we be if we let this month pass by without bagging the bounties it has for us. Let us, then, sisters and brothers in Islam, fast as best as we can during the month, keep our intentions pure of pleasing Allah and no one else. In sha Allah we will be immensely rewarded.

Stern Warning Concerning Debt (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

Being under debt is one of the worst thing that can happen to a respectable man and a true believer. The burden of debt that beyond the reach of a man's financial resources to meet ccan put one's entire life in jeopardy. every knock on the door, or a tinging of the door bell or e-mail from the banks and the people you owe money can be really devastating. The debt can rob you the peace of mind and may as well throw you in a deep state of depression.

But what if instead of the bank men or people whom you owe money, the angel of death knocks at your door. That is you die with a burden of debt still on your head. Unless your children pay off your debt or the man whom you owe the money forgives his money, you are in serious trouble even in the hereafter.

This is the subject of the  Hadith attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as mentioned in mentioned in Sunan Ibn Majah /  Book 15 The Chapters on Charity / باب الصدقات) / Chapter 12: Stern Warning Concerning Debt / باب التَّشْدِيدِ فِي الدَّيْنِ / as Hadith number # 2414 under:

It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

“Whoever dies owing a Dinar or a Dirham, it will be paid back from his good deeds, because then there will be no Dinar or Dirham.”

Arabic Text:‏

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ ثَعْلَبَةَ بْنِ سَوَاءٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَمِّي، مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَوَاءٍ عَنْ حُسَيْنٍ الْمُعَلِّمِ، عَنْ مَطَرٍ الْوَرَّاقِ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ "‏ مَنْ مَاتَ وَعَلَيْهِ دِينَارٌ أَوْ دِرْهَمٌ قُضِيَ مِنْ حَسَنَاتِهِ لَيْسَ ثَمَّ دِينَارٌ وَلاَ دِرْهَمٌ ‏"‏ ‏.‏

Grade: Sahih (Darussalam)

This Hadith in fact is a Stern Warning Concerning Debt for all of us not to leaveeven a penny of debt ever for no one knows when the clock stops and unless one's debts are paid by one's heirs, these can put us in serious trouble in the Hereafter. The judgement will be so simple, yet very tough, to bear for even a Dinar, say even a pence, will be traded with one's good deeds and added to the account of the one whom one owed that money.

Those of us who rob the poor of their hard earned money and property, and then render them helpless and leaving no choice for them but to take a loan, will also stand in the same queue. For forcing someone to take a loan while leaving him no other option, will be equally guilty. May be his good deeds are traded for the debt of the person who could not pay. 

So please make sure to live and manage one's life within the resources one has and one must never raise one's goals so high that one has to take loans which one may not be able to pay thereafter. Live a simple life within resources and avoid greed to have more by taking risks of being under debt.

Ramadan: How can we make Ramadan 2024 more blessed than before

Alhamdolillah, we are the blessed ones who will be fasting during the month of Ramadan 2024. We have been fasting all our lives, or at best most of our lives, and this year too Allah has blessed us the opportunity to fast yet again. We cannot find words to express my gratitude to the favour of Allah of bestowing us yet another opportunity to fast for the love of Allah.

But have ever pondered over how should we live through this Ramadan of our lives? What is something special that we would love and like to concentrate while fasting and making all related worships and prayers specific to Ramadan?

Or in simple words: What is our GOAL for this Ramadan?

I think most of of us do not make a pledge to be different than all previous months of Ramadan. We just begin the month by fasting, going to Taraweeh prayers, reciting Qur'an more than the usual and giving out more in charity. This is what we did last year and the years before. So how do we make this Ramadan different by setting a goal for ourselves?

After listening to this lecture, I hope we will make this Ramadan different from all the previous years and concentrate on one aspect of of our lives and make an endeavour to be better than before. In Sha Allah.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. Ramadan: Immense reward of two acts if undertaken out of sincere Faith with honest intention

Ramadan, the holiest month of Islamic calendar is fast approaching and for year 2024, it is likely to commence in the evening on Sunday, March 10, 2024 and end on Tuesday, April 9, 2024. This month is long awaited by all Muslims around the world for it carries immense Divine blessings for those who keep fast throughout the month, observe all acts of worship including the Taraweeh (تراويح - Romanized: Tarāwīḥ) prayers after the obligatory night prayer (Isha), reciting Qur'an during the day and even after the Fajr prayer (the pre dawn prayer) besides all acts of charity and otherwise good deeds.

However if two acts are undertaken out of sincere Faith with honest intention during the month, to please Allah and hoping for as special reward, Allah promptly responds and elevates them to the status of special servants.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has mentioned a Hadith these tow acts as quoted in Sahi al-Bukhārī  (Book 30 - Fasting /  كتاب الصوم / Chapter 6:  Whoever observed fast in Ramadan out of sincere Faith with honest intention / باب مَنْ صَامَ رَمَضَانَ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا وَنِيَّةً) as Hadith 1901, given herein under:

Narrated by Abu Huraira:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Whoever established prayers on the night of Qadr out of sincere faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven; and whoever fasts in the month of Ramadan out of sincere faith, and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven."

Arabic Text:

حَدَّثَنَا مُسْلِمُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ "‏ مَنْ قَامَ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ، وَمَنْ صَامَ رَمَضَانَ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ ‏"‏‏.‏

That is fasting not to tell the world that they are fasting and pretending to look pious, rather fasting throughout the month out of sincere Faith with honest intention to please Allah alone. And in addition to those who look for the Night of Qadr - (Arabic: لیلة القدر, Romanized: Laylat al-Qadr; also rendered as the Night of Destiny, Night of Decree, Night of Determination, or the Precious Night), that falls on any of the odd days of the last 10 days of the month of Ramadan, and remain busy in offering additional voluntary prayers (Nafil (Arabic: صلاة النفل, ṣalāt al-nafl) or optional prayer, is a type of a non-obligatory prayer.) and recitation of the Qur'an.

Let us not let this month pass away without bagging the special reward by merely our true and honest intentions to please Allah alone, and not as a show off to appear pious.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. Continuation of reward of good deeds (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

Islam is a blessed religion where the reward of good deeds never ceases. Those who make it a habit of doing good deeds or regular acts of worship like voluntary prayers, charity or reading Quran everyday, the reward of these deeds never ceases. It is promise of Allah that even if someone embarks upon a travel and is unable to continue with one's daily routine of worship, the reward continues till one comes back and resumes the previous routine worship. The same has been promised for those who fall sick and are unable to carry on with good deeds.

This glad tiding is mentioned in a Hadith of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, quoted in Sahi al-Bukhārī  (Book 56 - Fighting for the Cause of Allah (Jihaad) /  كتاب الجهاد والسير / Chapter 134:  A traveler is granted reward / باب يُكْتَبُ لِلْمُسَافِرِ مِثْلُ مَا كَانَ يَعْمَلُ فِي الإِقَامَةِ) as Hadith 2996, given herein under:

Narrated Ibrahim Abu Isma`il As-Saksaki: I heard Abu Burda who accompanied Yazid bin Abi Kabsha on a journey. Yazid used to observe fasting on journeys. Abu Burda said to him, "I heard Abu Musa several times saying that Allah's Apostle said, 'When a slave falls ill or travels, then he will get reward similar to that he gets for good deeds practiced at home when in good health."

Arabic Text:

حَدَّثَنَا مَطَرُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، حَدَّثَنَا الْعَوَّامُ، حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ أَبُو إِسْمَاعِيلَ السَّكْسَكِيُّ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا بُرْدَةَ، وَاصْطَحَبَ، هُوَ وَيَزِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي كَبْشَةَ فِي سَفَرٍ، فَكَانَ يَزِيدُ يَصُومُ فِي السَّفَرِ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو بُرْدَةَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا مُوسَى مِرَارًا يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ "‏ إِذَا مَرِضَ الْعَبْدُ أَوْ سَافَرَ، كُتِبَ لَهُ مِثْلُ مَا كَانَ يَعْمَلُ مُقِيمًا صَحِيحًا ‏"‏‏.‏

This is the reason why Islam teaches and encourages us to make the involuntary worship, charity or reading Qur'an part of our daily routine for one never knows about his health and fall sick or have to travel, disrupting one's daily routine of good deeds. It would be better that one decides to offer a number of cycles of involuntary prayer, reading at least one Ruku of the Qur'an, keeping fast on ever Monday and Thursday or even giving away a small amount of money in charity every day or once a week. Whatever routine one continuously observes will become one's continuous source of rewards when the routine is disturbed due to travel or sickness. May Allah's rewards continue to pour on us. Ameen

Beware of the curse of the oppressed (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

The world we live in is unfortunately dominated by the powerful, demagogue  cruel godfathers and men of position. And it is them on whose mercy every weak and meek seek for wherever the former go  they leave behind tales of misery, cruelty and injustice.

These are either men or countries flexing their muscles to dominate the defenseless weak and poor,who cannot stand up to the powerful for fear of severe retribution. But the curse they hurl on the cruel reaches the heavens far earlier than the tales of injustice meted out to them.

Oppression has many a face: It may start from oppression of one's spouse or children at home, oppression by a street gangs of a community, oppression by a tyrant politician to snub and subdue the people, and or oppression of smaller states by powerful countries. Thus, the curse of any people or countries that are oppressed pierce through the heavens and are specially listened to by our Lord.

And it is for those oppressed whom Allah promises lifting the veil between Him and them and always listens to them and promises that every dog has its day and will be accounted for.

This is the subject of the hadith attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ mentioned in Sahi al-Bukhārī  (Book 46 -   Oppressions /  كتاب المظالم / Chapter 0: The curse of the oppressed / باب الاِتِّقَاءِ وَالْحَذَرِ مِنْ دَعْوَةِ الْمَظْلُومِ) as Hadith 1145, given herein under:

Narrated by Ibn `Abbas:

The Prophet (ﷺ) sent Mu`adh to Yemen and said, "Be afraid, from the curse of the oppressed as there is no screen between his invocation and Allah."

Arabic Text:

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ مُوسَى، حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، حَدَّثَنَا زَكَرِيَّاءُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ الْمَكِّيُّ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ صَيْفِيٍّ، عَنْ أَبِي مَعْبَدٍ، مَوْلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم بَعَثَ مُعَاذًا إِلَى الْيَمَنِ، فَقَالَ ‏ "‏ اتَّقِ دَعْوَةَ الْمَظْلُومِ، فَإِنَّهَا لَيْسَ بَيْنَهَا وَبَيْنَ اللَّهِ حِجَابٌ ‏"‏‏.

So my brothers and sisters in Islam, never ever hurt a poor or being unjust to anyone  for wrath of Allah is too severe to be borne

Which is the time when Allah promises responding to invocations of believers

It is obligatory on every adult and sane man and woman to offer prayers As Salat five times a day. And Allah responds to their invocations in His own way. But there is one prayer which is not obligatory, yet it carries far more dividends and blessings for the believers. This is the voluntary prayer of Tahajjad, when a believer breaks his sleep in the night and stand in front of his Creator when everyone else is asleep. This is the prayer that Allah loves the most for a His servant has sacrificed his sleep for the love of his Creator. And this is the time when any invocation made by a believer is personally listened to by Allah and Allah promises to respond to the invocations of His servants. 

In one of his Hadiths, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has mentioned the descending of Allah to the nearest Heaven from earth and is pleased with His servants praying and supplicating. This Hadith is mentioned in Sahi al-Bukhārī  (Book 19 -   Prayer at Night (Tahajjud) /  كتاب التهجد / Chapter 14: Offering Salat (prayer) and invoking Allah in the last hours of the night / باب الدُّعَاءِ وَالصَّلاَةِ مِنْ آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ) as Hadith 1145, given herein under:

Narrated by Abu Huraira: 

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) (p.b.u.h) said, "Our Lord, the Blessed, the Superior, comes every night down on the nearest Heaven to us when the last third of the night remains, saying: "Is there anyone to invoke Me, so that I may respond to invocation? Is there anyone to ask Me, so that I may grant him his request? Is there anyone seeking My forgiveness, so that I may forgive him?"

Arabic Text:

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، وَأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الأَغَرِّ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ "‏ يَنْزِلُ رَبُّنَا تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى كُلَّ لَيْلَةٍ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ الدُّنْيَا حِينَ يَبْقَى ثُلُثُ اللَّيْلِ الآخِرُ يَقُولُ مَنْ يَدْعُونِي فَأَسْتَجِيبَ لَهُ مَنْ يَسْأَلُنِي فَأُعْطِيَهُ مَنْ يَسْتَغْفِرُنِي فَأَغْفِرَ لَهُ ‏"‏‏.‏

Though it is very difficult for men to get up in the last quarter of night for one is already tired of working the whole previous day and resting to get up the next day for the repetition of his daily chores. And if one breaks one's sleep and stand in front of his Rabb voluntary for there is no Adhan for Tahajjad prayer and opens his heart out to Him, hoping his invocations will be heard to. And believe me these are heard and responded.  

This is the time when there is no barrier between the man and his Creator - a time when in the quietness of last quarter of night, a man opens his heart out to his Creator as if he is in direct communication with his Lord. The immense joy of such a time and invocation can be described, but felt. Try it out and once a believer makes it a habit to pray the Tahajjad prayer, there is no stopping then. Try it tonight!

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

Note: When we mention God in our posts, we mean One True God, we call Allah in Islam, with no associates. Allah is the Sole Creator of all things, and that Allah is all-powerful and all-knowing. Allah has no offspring, no race, no gender, no body, and is unaffected by the characteristics of human life.
