Etiquette of Supplicating (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

The wants, needs and requirement of man are unlimited. And whenever we are in need, we turn to Allah and supplicate for the fulfillment of our needs. But we must adhere to the etiquette of supplicating for our intentions have to be pure and clean, not aimed at asking to hurt someone for we were hurt by them or cause an evil spell for we have been treated so.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has mentioned the etiquette so that our supplications do not bog down en route to Allah and get rejected. 

Following Hadith has been mentioned in Jami` at-Tirmidhi / Chapters on Supplication - كتاب الدعوات عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم / Hadith 3381 / Chapter (9): What Has Been Related That the Supplication of a Muslim Is Answered (باب مَا جَاءَ أَنَّ دَعْوَةَ الْمُسْلِمِ مُسْتَجَابَةٌ ) / Grade: Sahi

Jabir narrated:

حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ ‏ "‏ مَا مِنْ أَحَدٍ يَدْعُو بِدُعَاءٍ إِلاَّ آتَاهُ اللَّهُ مَا سَأَلَ أَوْ كَفَّ عَنْهُ مِنَ السُّوءِ مِثْلَهُ مَا لَمْ يَدْعُ بِإِثْمٍ أَوْ قَطِيعَةِ رَحِمٍ ‏"‏‏.‏ وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ وَعُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ ‏.‏

The Messenger of Allah said: “There is none who utters a supplication, except that Allah gives him what he asked, or prevents evil from him that is equal to it – as long as he does not supplicate for something evil, or the cutting of ties of the womb.”

The above quoted Hadith clearly defines the etiquette of supplicating and mentions that anything but evil or cutting ties with the relations of the womb, that is brothers and sisters, will be accepted. That is, it is the intent which causes a supplication to be accepted or rejected. So long we adhere to the basic etiquette of doing everything as mentioned in Qur'an or in the Hadith of the Prophet of Allah, we can be rest assured of being blessed rather than returned empty handed on basis of our evil intent.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.  

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.
