Do not run to the Masjid with dry heels (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

Ablution is a mandatory act before offering one's Salat / prayer, whether at home or in masjid. Sometimes, a man gets late to reach the masjid in time and he finds that the salat behind the imam of the masjid has already started. In order not to miss the salat with others, he hurriedly performs ablution and may not complete the ablution and runs to join the salat.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ once observed a man running to join the salat with incomplete ablution and saw his dry heels. He admonished the act and advised everyone to complete the ablution as is laid down (read our post on How to perform ablution before offering salat) and even if he misses the salat with others, he should not leave the ablution half done.

This Hadith is mentioned in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī  (Book 4 Ablutions (Wudu') كتاب الوضوء/ Chapter 29: The washing of heels during ablution باب غَسْلِ الأَعْقَابِ) as Hadith 165, given herein under:

Narrated by Muhammad Ibn Ziyad:

I heard Abu Huraira saying as he passed by us while the people were performing ablution from a utensil containing water, "Perform ablution perfectly and thoroughly for Abul-Qasim (the Prophet) said, 'Save your heels from the Hell-fire.' "

In another narration also by ‘Abdullaah ibn ‘Amr who said: “The Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) lagged behind us on a journey. We travelled (back) and we took him; and then came the time of the afternoon prayer, and as we were going to wipe our feet, he (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) called out: ‘Woe to the heels because of Hell-fire’.” [Muslim]. So, this is the reason behind the hadeeth, and in the version by Abi Hurayrah, he reported that: “Allaah’s Messenger (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) saw a man who did not wash his heel and he remarked: ‘Woe to the heels because of Hell-Fire’.” [Muslim]. [1]

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ particularized the heels because they are the places of accumulation of filth. That is why there is so much caution on leaving the heels dry in a hurry to join the salat. And this may risk his heels taking him to hell. So much is the importance of performing the ablution in full, ensuring not a single hair is left on parts of the body for which it is ordained to be washed thoroughly.
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.
وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

Note: When we mention God in our posts, we mean One True God, we call Allah in Islam, with no associates. Allah is the Sole Creator of all things, and that Allah is all-powerful and all-knowing. Allah has no offspring, no race, no gender, no body, and is unaffected by the characteristics of human life.
