99 Attributes of Allah: Al 'Ali - The Sublimely Exalted, The Most High

Al 'Alī " الۡعَلِىُّ" The One Who is the Sublimely Exalted, the Most High. The One Who is above and exceeds all others, above whom there is nothing higher. The One whose rank and station are the Most High. The One who is above and surpasses all that has ever been, all that there now is, and all that shall ever be.

In the Holy Qur'an, the attribute Al 'Ali has been used as:

ۚ وَلَا يَـُٔوۡدُهٗ حِفۡظُهُمَا ۚ وَ هُوَ الۡعَلِىُّ الۡعَظِيۡمُ‏

... and their upholding wearies Him not. He is All-High, All-Glorious.
[Al Quran Surah A Baqarah 2:255]

The above verse is part of the famous Ayat ul Kursi, a unique ayat of the Holy Qur'an which describes the might of Allah Almighty and closes with these two attributes of Allah: Al 'Ali and Al Azeem, meaning the All High, All Gracious.

In Surah Hajj, the Al 'Ali attributes comes with yet another attribute of Allah, Al Khabīr:

ذٰ لِكَ بِاَنَّ اللّٰهَ هُوَ الۡحَـقُّ وَاَنَّ مَا يَدۡعُوۡنَ مِنۡ دُوۡنِهٖ هُوَ الۡبَاطِلُ وَاَنَّ اللّٰهَ هُوَ الۡعَلِىُّ الۡكَبِيۡرُ‏

"So shall it be because Allah, He is the Truth, and all whom they invoke instead of Him are false. Allah is Most High, All-Great."[Al Quran Surah Hajj 22:62]

"Al 'Alī" is derived from uluww, height, sublimity, or loftiness versus lowliness. The height referred to here is that of status. Al 'Alī is thus so high in status that He can never be conceived or visualized. Minds are at a loss regarding His Sublime Exaltation. In fact no words can describe this attribute of Allah.

According to Al-Asma' wal sifat, where a qudsi tradition is quoted, the Messenger of Allah heard during the Night of Isra (the night journey to Jerusalem) a praising in the high heavens saying: Subhan al-`Aliyy al-A`la, Subnahu wa Ta`ala, that is, "Glory to the Most High, Glory to Him and Exaltation." Iyas ibn Salmah has quoted his father saying that he had heard the Messenger of Allah starting every supplication by saying, "Subhana al-A`la al-Wahhab," "Glory to the Most High, the ever- Giving."
