How to develop true Believing (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

One of the most difficult things to practice is true believing. And especially so when something that we believe in does not have proof. Remember the age-old dictum: Seeing is beleiving! Well sometimes even seeing a thing can be deceiving and most of the time unseen things turn out to cement one's faith.

Without confusing the issue of beleiving anymore, we share today a Hadith attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, in which the revered Messenger of Allah teaches us how to develop believing and where true beleiving would lead us to.

This Hadith is mentioned in Sunan Abi Dawud (Book # 43 General Behavior (Kitab Al-Adab) / كتاب الأدب / Chapter # 143 Spreading Salam / باب فِي إِفْشَاءِ السَّلاَمِ ) as Hadith number # 5193, quoted herein under:

Abu Hurairah reported the Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) as saying:
By him in whose hand my soul is, you will not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not believe until you love one another: should I not guide you to something doing which you will love one another: spread out salutation among you.
Grade: Sahih (Al-Albani)

To understand the spirit of the Hadit, instead of reading this Hadith from beginning to end, lets us read it from the end to the beginning. Believing in something cannot be developed unless we develop mutual love for each other. And the best way to induce love among ourselves is to extend salutations much too often.

The best greeting that Muslims can extend to each other is As-salamu alaykum (Arabic: ٱلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ, as-salāmu ʿalaykum, that means 'Peace be upon you'. In fact, the salām (سَلَام, meaning 'peace') has become a religious salutation for Muslims worldwide, and is even emulated by non-Muslims too. (Though, the complete phrase is as-salāmu ʿalaykum wa-raḥmatu -llāhi wa-barakātuhū (ٱلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ ٱللَّٰهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ, 'Peace be upon you, as well as the mercy of God and His blessings'.)

In response to this salutation, the receiver should respond by saying: Wa ʿalaykumu s-salam (وَعَلَيْكُم ٱلسَّلَامُ) meaning "may peace be upon you too". The complete form is "Wa ʿalaykumu s-salāmu wa-raḥmatu -llāhi wa-barakātuhū" (وَعَلَيْكُمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ وَرَحْمَةُ ٱللَّٰهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ, "And upon you be peace, as well as the mercy of God and his blessings").

Now just imagine the love and peace expressed by one beleiving man to another. These salutations are much better than mere Good Morning or Good Afternoon etc. Unlike the latter, the Muslim greeting mean much more than a mere salutation. These convey one's inner sincerity and love for one's fellow believer. Oce this salutation from the very heart becomes a habit, it would induce love for each other, as mentioned in the above quoted hadith. Once this love becomes solidifies, one's belief too becomes strong to understand Islam, which is founded on the main theme of peace. And when every Muslim believes in peace, nothing wrong will accrue from him for his brethren in Islam. If and when such a high standard of love coexists between Muslims, nothing would stop them from entering the Jannah, the ultimate paradise.

So you see, how simple salutation can turn into mutual love for each other and based on this love, one's belief in Islam becomes more stronger, in other words peace, which will lead believers to Paradise, In Sha Allah, one day.
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.
وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

Note: When we mention God in our posts, we mean One True God, we call Allah in Islam, with no associates. Allah is the Sole Creator of all things, and that Allah is all-powerful and all-knowing. Allah has no offspring, no race, no gender, no body, and is unaffected by the characteristics of human life.

Scholars' Viewpoint: Knowing and Believing in Allah are Two Different Things

Almost everyone knows that there is one supreme power that created the universe and controls it irrespective of the kind of faith one follows. That is "knowing" that there is a Supreme Being, we call Allah, others call Him God or any other names. But do we really believe in Him, the Omnipotent and Monotheist being?

Unfortunately, the answer is no. Even most Muslims do not really believe in One True God and are always relying on worldly gods for fulfillment of their needs and aspirations. Many Muslims of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh worship deities in human form and go to their graves and requesting them their prayers and wants be conveyed to Allah.

This mindset occurs due to disbelief in Allah or one true God. In our daily lives, we are more prone to pleasing our bosses to get a raise or finding shortcuts to power avenues rather than working honestly and leaving rewards to Allah, who knows what is best for us and how much.

Please listen to Wahiduddin Khan, known with the honorific Maulana, is an Islamic scholar and peace activist known for having written a commentary on the Quran and having translated it into contemporary English how he differentiates between knowing and believing in Allah:

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is our duty to convey only to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and help us to act upon the commandments of Allah contained therein. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable.
