Put your trust in the Ever Living One Who dies not

Faith in One True God is the essence of Islam and all Muslims firmly believe in it. Reason why I am sharing this verse today is for those Muslims with weak faith who approach graves of worldly deities and think they buried ones are listening to them and they in turn will convey their woes to Allah, But this utterly wrong practice for we do not read Qur'an with translation and tafsir / exegesis. 

The following 58th verse of Surah 25. Al Furqan is a great advice from none other than Allah Himself wherein He reassures His servants to have trust in Him for He will always be there and is always listening. If we develop this faith and trust in Allah, we shall never need approaching the worldly deities and asking them to pray for us.

وَتَوَكَّلۡ عَلَى الۡحَـىِّ الَّذِىۡ لَا يَمُوۡتُ وَسَبِّحۡ بِحَمۡدِهٖ​ ؕ وَكَفٰى بِهٖ بِذُنُوۡبِ عِبَادِهٖ خَبِيۡرَ ا​ ۛۚ ۙ‏ 
(25:58) Put your trust in Him Who is Ever-Living, Who will never die, and glorify Him with His praise. He suffices as the Knower of the sins of His servants,

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir
(وَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى الْحَىِّ الَّذِى لاَ يَمُوتُ  And put your trust in the Ever Living One Who dies not,) meaning, in all your affairs, put your trust in Allah, the Ever-Living Who never dies, 
The One Who: (الاٌّوَّلُ وَالاٌّخِرُ وَالظَّـهِرُ وَالْبَـطِنُ وَهُوَ بِكُلِّ شَىْءٍ عَلِيمٌ is the First and the Last, the Most High and the Most Near. And He is the All-Knower of everything) (57:3). 
The Eternal, Ever-Lasting, Ever-Living, Self-Sufficient One, the Lord and Sovereign of all things, the One to Whom you should always turn. Allah is the One in Whom you should put your trust and to Whom you should turn for refuge, He will be sufficient for you and will be your helper and supporter, and will cause you to prevail. 
As Allah says: (O Messenger! Proclaim which has been sent down to you from your Lord. And if you do not, then you have not conveyed His Message. Allah will protect you from mankind) (5:67).
(وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِهِ and glorify His praises,) means, combine praising Him with glorifying Him. 

Hence the Messenger of Allah used to say: (Glory be to You, O Allah, and with Your praise.) So the Ayah means: be sincere in worshipping Him and putting your trust in Him. 
This is like the Ayat: (The Lord of the east and the west; there is no God but He. So take Him as a Trustee.) (73:9)
(So worship Him and put your trust in Him) (11:123).
(Say: "He is the Most Gracious, in Him we believe, and in Him we put our trust.'') (67:29)
(وَكَفَى بِهِ بِذُنُوبِ عِبَادِهِ خَبِيراً and sufficient is He as the All-Knower of the sins of His servants) means, by His perfect knowledge nothing is hidden from Him nor can anything be hidden from Him, not even a speck of dust's weight.

Qur'an Wiki:
To believe in God’s oneness is the cornerstone of the Islamic faith. It is the point where clarity, straightforwardness and simplicity of beliefs is separated from ambiguity, confusion and complexity. Needless to say, no proper system of life can be based on the latter.

Everyone other than God is dead, because life comes to an end with death. The only one that remains is God, the Living One who does not die. 
If we rely on someone whose life comes to an end after a short or long time, then we are only putting our weight against a wall that will eventually collapse, or seeking shade that will inevitably fade away. 
To be truly assured one must rely only on the One who never dies, and place one’s trust solely in Him. “Extol His limitless glory and praise.” The only one worthy of praise is God who grants all favours and blessings. Hence the Prophet is instructed to leave alone those unbelievers who heed no warning and care for no happy news. He should give them up to Him since He knows their sins. Nothing is hidden from Him: “Sufficient is it that He is well aware of his servants’ sins".

Our Lord! Ward off from us the chastisement of Hell, for its chastisement is one that clings


A true believer is always praying and beseeching his Creator, Allah, The Almighty, The Most Forgivable and Most Merciful to invoke His limitless mercy to forgive their sins and save them from those whose final abode will be the chastisement of the painful life of the Hell.  They prostrate in front of their Lord and beg:

وَالَّذِيۡنَ يَقُوۡلُوۡنَ رَبَّنَا اصۡرِفۡ عَنَّا عَذَابَ جَهَـنَّمَ ​ۖ  اِنَّ عَذَابَهَا كَانَ غَرَامًا ​ۖ ‏ 
(25:65) who entreat: "Our Lord! Ward off from us the chastisement of Hell, for its chastisement is one that clings."

This verse from Surah 25 Al Furqan is in fact continuation of description of the true believers that is explained in the previous two verses (63-64), which read:
(25:63) The true servants of the Merciful One are those who walk on the earth gently and when the foolish ones address them, they simply say: "Peace to you"; (25:64) who spend the night prostrating themselves before their Lord and standing;
The above two verses explain the characteristics of a true believer who is fearful of Allah and who avoids the foolish and spend the night standing and prostrating before their Lord and entreating: "Our Lord! Ward off from us the chastisement of Hell, for its chastisement is one that clings." They know that the torment of hell would be ever-present and never ending. Everything that strikes the son of Adam, then disappears, does not constitute an inseparable, permanent punishment. The inseparable, permanent punishment is that which lasts as long as heaven and earth.

The chastisement that clings means a punishment which will be everlasting and the dwellers of Hell will not be able to separate them from the comeuppance for it will never leave them even for a second and will cling to their bodies for ever. They will die and come back to life, again to die and relive and this tormented cycle would continue for ever. 

It is for this reason that this is a prayer of humility: such a person relies, not on any good works which he may have done, but on the Grace and Mercy of Allah; and he shows a lively sense of the Day of Judgment, when every action will weigh for or against a soul.

The verse continues as: 
اِنَّهَا سَآءَتۡ مُسۡتَقَرًّا وَّمُقَامًا‏ 
(25:66) Verily it is a wretched abode and resting place."

The misery which results from sin is not only grievous to live in ("an abode") but also grievous "to rest in" or "to stand in", if it be only for a short time. That is, their worship has not made them vain and proud to presume that they are the beloved ones of Allah and that the Fire of Hell will not touch them. On the other hand, in spite of all their worship and good deeds, they are so filled with the fear of the torment of Hell that they pray to their Lord to save them from it, for they do not depend upon their own work for success in the Hereafter but upon the mercy of Allah.

Our Lord! Ward off from us the chastisement of Hell - Verily it is a wretched abode


The believers are always mindful of their errors and sins that have been committed knowing or unknowingly and are forever repenting and asking for forgiveness so that the chastisement of hell could be warded off from them. The fear of torment of hellfire constantly keeps them at ease and they are all the time praying and supplicating for aversion of this dreadful place. The following two verses from Surah 25. Al Furqan show the way to the believers as how to invoke Allah's countless blessings so that they may be forgiven:

وَالَّذِيۡنَ يَقُوۡلُوۡنَ رَبَّنَا اصۡرِفۡ عَنَّا عَذَابَ جَهَـنَّمَ ​ۖ  اِنَّ عَذَابَهَا كَانَ غَرَامًا ​ۖ ‏ 
اِنَّهَا سَآءَتۡ مُسۡتَقَرًّا وَّمُقَامًا‏ 
(25:65) who entreat: "Our Lord! Ward off from us the chastisement of Hell, for its chastisement is one that clings. (25:66) Verily it is a wretched abode and resting place.

These two verses are in fact continuation of previous two verses which describe the traits of a true believer [(25:63) The true servants of the Merciful One are those who walk on the earth gently and when the foolish ones address them, they simply say: "Peace to you";] and [(25:64) who spend the night prostrating themselves before their Lord and standing;]

And when they [ray to their Lord, they entreat "Our Lord! Ward off from us the chastisement of Hell, for its chastisement is one that clings. (25:66) Verily it is a wretched abode and resting place.

Yusuf Ali interprets this invocation and notes:
This is a prayer of humility: such a person relies, not on any good works which he may have done, but on the Grace and Mercy of Allah; and he shows a lively sense of the Day of Judgment, when every action will weigh for or against a soul. The misery which results from sin is not only grievous to live in ("an abode") but also grievous "to rest in" or "to stand in", if it be only for a short time.

Tafsir Ibn Kathir
(And those who say: "Our Lord! Avert from us the torment of Hell. Verily, its torment is ever an inseparable punishment.'') meaning, ever-present and never ending. 
Al-Hasan said concerning the Ayah, (Verily, its torment is ever an inseparable, permanent punishment.) Everything that strikes the son of Adam, then disappears, does not constitute an inseparable, permanent punishment. The inseparable, permanent punishment is that which lasts as long as heaven and earth. 
This was also the view of Sulayman At-Taymi. (Evil indeed it is as an abode and as a place to rest in.) means, how evil it looks as a place to dwell and how evil it is as a place to rest.
[4] True believers always remember the hereafter and the day of reckoning. They believe that all human deeds will be accounted for on that day, the good will be rewarded multiple times, and the evil will be rewarded accordingly. When they munajat with God at night, it is reflected in their minds how terrible the atmosphere at that time is as if they really saw how ferocious the fire of hell is, which always awaits the disobedient servants of Allah to become its prey and food. At that time their tears fell and they earnestly begged God to be freed from the torments of that painful hellfire.

People who have such strong belief in the hereafter will certainly use the opportunity of living in this world to do as much good as possible and will not do evil deeds because they are sure that their actions will be rewarded with painful torment. No matter how good a regulation is made by humans and how strict supervision is in its implementation, humans who are not aware of Allah's supervision can escape from the bonds of those rules and laws. However, a man who believes, if there are no rules and laws, will not commit a single crime, because he is aware that even though he can be free from punishment in this world, he will not be able to escape the punishment in the hereafter.

This verse explains how a believer is truly afraid of falling into the torments of hell because the torment is so painful and terrible. Hell is the worst place reserved for the servant of Allah who denies and is disobedient. The unbelievers are in it forever, suffering all kinds of torments. Even though their skin has been scorched and the heat of hellfire has penetrated into the flesh and bones, they still live to feel the torment as it is in His words:
Truly, those who disbelieve in Our verses, will be Us. enter into hell. Every time their skin was scorched, We replaced it with another skin, so that they would taste the punishment. Truly, Allah is all-powerful, all-wise. (Surah 4 An-Nisa ': 56).

Our Lord! grant unto us wives and offspring who will be the comfort of our eyes

Many of us more often than not recite the following Surah 25. Al-Furqan verse 74. But perhaps we have not really fathomed the deep meaning of this simple yet powerful dua / supplication, for many of us do not really know what coolness of our eyes really mean. I too have been one of those till today when I heard a lecture by one of the most learned Muslim scholar, exegete and linguist of present times Nouman Ali Khan. 

Before you reach to the end of this post and listen to Nouman Ali Khan, let us first read the exegesis of this powerful dua / supplication by different Muslims scholars:

وَالَّذِيۡنَ يَقُوۡلُوۡنَ رَبَّنَا هَبۡ لَـنَا مِنۡ اَزۡوَاجِنَا وَذُرِّيّٰتِنَا قُرَّةَ اَعۡيُنٍ وَّاجۡعَلۡنَا لِلۡمُتَّقِيۡنَ اِمَامًا‏ 
And those who pray "Our Lord! grant unto us wives and offspring who will be the comfort of our eyes and give us (the grace) to lead the righteous." 

The most distinctive characteristic of the true servants is their eagerness for prayer to Allah. In verse 65 " who entreat: "Our Lord! Ward off from us the chastisement of Hell, for its chastisement is one that clings. " their prayer for their own salvation and in (verse 74 )their prayer for their wives and children have been cited: Our Lord, make our wives and children true believers so that they should practice righteousness and become a source of comfort for us. Their prayer shows that the true servants of Allah are more concerned about the salvation of their beloved ones in the Hereafter than the enjoyment of the world.

Now flash back into time of the advent of Islam, which may now be applicable for those reverts who have though reverted to Islam, but yearn their wives and children also to come under the fold of Islam.
It should be noted that this characteristic has been cited here to show that the true servants had sincerely believed in the message. That is why they were so concerned about the faith of their beloved ones. It should also be kept in mind that many of the near and dear ones of the believers had not as yet embraced Islam. If a husband had embraced Islam, the wife was still an unbeliever, and if a youth had accepted Islam, his parents and brothers and sisters were still involved in disbelief, and vice versa. Therefore, the true servants wept and prayed for them, whenever the picture of their horrible state in Hell came before their eyes.
That is, we should excel in piety, righteousness and good works; nay, we should become the leaders of the pious people so that we may lead them in the propagation of virtue and piety in the world. Incidentally, this characteristic of the true servants was in great contrast to that of the disbelievers, who strove in competition and rivalry with one another for superiority in worldly power and wealth. But it is a pity that some people in our time have misinterpreted this verse as containing sanction for seeking candidature for political leadership. According to them, the verse means: Our Lord, make us rulers over the pious people.

Yusuf Ali Explanation:
We must also pray for the maintenance of Allah's Law after us, through our wives and descendants: in our eyes they should not be mere accidents or play-things, but a real comfort and fulfilment of our spiritual longings. Perhaps, through them, as well through ourselves, we may, by Allah's grace, be able to give a lead for truth and righteousness.

Let us recapitulate the virtues of the true servants of Allah: (1) they are humble and forbearing to those below them in spiritual worth; (2) they are constantly, by adoration, in touch with Allah; (3) they always remember the Judgment in the Hereafter; (4) they are moderate in all things; (5) they avoid treason to Allah, to their fellow-creatures, and to themselves; (6) they give a wide berth not only to falsehood but to futility; (7) they pay attention, both in mind and manner, to the Signs of their Lord; (8) their ambition is to bring up their families in righteousness and to lead in all good. A fine code of individual and social ethics, a ladder of spiritual development, open to all.

One of the most comprehensive verses of the Quran on doctrine of Tawhid

Tawḥīd is the basic essence of Islam. It means "oneness of God."  Tawḥīd  in fact is the indivisible oneness concept of monotheism in Islam. Tawhid is the Islam's central and single-most important concept, upon which a true believer's entire faith rests. It unequivocally holds that God is One (Al-ʾAḥad) and The Manifestation of Unity (Al-Wāḥid).

There are many verses in the Qur'an that explicitly hinge on the concept of Tawḥīd. But one of the most comprehensive verses of the Quran with regard to the doctrine of Tawhid is the second verse of Sūrah Al-Furqān, the 25th Chapter of the Holy Qur'an:

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ 
"In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful"

اۨلَّذِىۡ لَهٗ مُلۡكُ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالۡاَرۡضِ وَلَمۡ يَتَّخِذۡ وَلَدًا وَّلَمۡ يَكُنۡ لَّهٗ شَرِيۡكٌ فِى الۡمُلۡكِ وَخَلَقَ كُلَّ شَىۡءٍ فَقَدَّرَهٗ تَقۡدِيۡرًا‏

"He to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and who has not taken a son and has not had a partner in dominion and has created each thing and determined it with [precise] determination."

“To Him belongs the Sovereignty of the heavens and the earth.” That is, He alone has an exclusive right to it, and no one else has any right to it nor any share in it.

That is, He has neither any relation of direct parenthood to anyone, nor has He taken anyone as a son. Therefore, none else in the universe is entitled to worship. He is Unique and there can be no partner in His Godhead. Thus all those who associate with Him angels or jinns or saints as His offspring, are ignorant. Likewise, those who believe that someone is His son, are also ignorant. They have no true conception of the Greatness of Allah and consider Him to be weak and needy like human beings, who require someone to become their inheritor. It is sheer ignorance and folly. 

The Arabic word mulk means Sovereignty, Supreme Authority, and Kingship. Thus the sentence will mean: Allah is the Absolute Ruler of the whole universe and there is none other who may have any right to authority; therefore He alone is God. For, whenever a man takes anything else as his lord, he does so under the presumption that his deity has the power to do good or bring harm and make or mar his fortune; nobody will like to worship a powerless deity. Now when it is recognized that none but Allah has the real power and authority in the universe, nobody will bow before anyone other than Him in worship, nor will sing anybody else’s hymns, nor commit the folly of bowing in worship before anything else except his real God, or recognize any other as his ruler, because “To Allah belongs the Sovereignty of the heavens and the earth and to Him alone.”

There may be other translations of this also: He has ordained it in due proportion; or He has appointed an exact measure for everything. But no translation can convey its real meaning, which is: Allah has not only created everything in the universe but also determined its shape, size, potentialities, characteristics, term of existence, the limitations and extent of its development and all other things concerning it. Then, He has created the means and provisions to enable it to function properly in its own separate sphere.

According to traditions, the Prophet (peace be upon him) himself taught this verse to every child of his family as soon as it was able to speak and utter a few words. Thus, this verse is the best means of impressing the doctrine of Tawhid on our minds, and every Muslim should use it for educating his children as soon as they develop understanding.

Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Explanation:
( He for Whom is the sovereignty of the heavens and the earth; ) The implication is that no one should think that this Book is a request from a requester. It is the royal decree of the king of the universe that has to be obeyed. If it is denied no one will be able to save people from God’s grasp. 

( He has not made any children for Himself.) Those who have ascribed sons and daughters to God necessarily claim that they will save them from God’s grasp. This a refutation of this false claim.

( No one shares His sovereignty. He has created everything and prescribed a due measure for it.) Stated here is the argument for the oneness of God: when He has created everything and it is He Who has prescribed bounds and limits for the form, body, power, potential, traits and attributes, rise and development and existence and downfall, then how can someone else share His divinity? Is it possible for anyone to even slightly increase or decrease the measure in which God has created a thing?

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir
(He to Whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and Who has begotten no son and for Whom there is no partner in the dominion.) Allah states that He is above having any offspring or partner.

Then He tells us: (He has created everything, and has measured it exactly according to its due measurements.) meaning, everything apart from Him is created and subject to Him. He is the Creator, Lord, Master and God of all things, and everything is subject to His dominion, control and power.

Qur'an Wiki:
The One who revealed to His Messenger this standard is “He to whom belongs the dominion over the heavens and the earth, and who begets no offspring, and has no partner in His dominion. It is He who has created all things and ordained them in due proportions.”

Once more God is not mentioned here by name, but a relative pronoun is used instead to emphasize certain suitable attributes of His: “He to whom belongs the dominion over the heavens and the earth.” He has absolute dominion over the heavens and the earth: a dominion that signifies ownership, control and ability to change and transform.

Who begets no offspring.” Procreation is one of the natural laws God has set in operation to ensure the continuity of life, but God is Eternal and able to accomplish His purpose, whatever that may be.

He “has no partner in His dominion.” Everything in the heavens and the earth testifies to the unity of design, nature, law and control.

It is He who has created all things and ordained them in due proportions.” He determines the size, shape, function, time and place of everything as well as all their interactions and harmonization.

The nature of the universe, its make up and constitution fill us with wonder. It makes nonsense of any suggestion that the universe came into being by chance. It demonstrates the meticulous and detailed proportioning of creation, which human knowledge can hardly manage to fathom even in one area of the vast universe. With every scientific progress made, more aspects of the harmony and balance in the universe and its natural laws are discovered. Consequently, we can better appreciate the meaning of this wonderful statement: “It is He who has created all things and ordained them in due proportions.

Day by day, human knowledge uncovers more and more of the elaborate system that gives every creature their measure, proportion and balance. With such increased knowledge we appreciate even better the significance of the Qur’ānic statement: “It is He who has created all things and ordained them in due proportions.”
