Listening to (and understanding) religious scriptures is always refreshing and soul inspiring. And when it comes to listening to Qur'an, even non-Muslims have acknowledged its impact on their soul and a strange sense of satisfaction even when they do not understand a bit of Arabic in which Qur'an was revealed and recited.
Something that many Muslims forget is that it is necessary to understand Qur'an and mere recitation is not enough. For every word of Qur'an has a meaning hidden into it and only those ponder over these can feel their soul being nourished and the whole body feeling its effect.
I am witness to a miracle wherein a family friend suddenly went blind and for five years he could not see. Having nothing to do, he kept reciting verses from Qur'an and after five years, the healing effect of Qur'an, as promised by Allah, worked and he got his eyesight back.
Those who feel physically and spiritually hollow more often than not look up to their Creator, Allah the Almighty, for healing. Allah replies to reassure them of healing that Qur'an contains, as mentioned in the 82nd verse of Surah 17. Al Israa (The Ascent) as reproduced herein under:
وَنُنَزِّلُ مِنَ الۡـقُرۡاٰنِ مَا هُوَ شِفَآءٌ وَّرَحۡمَةٌ لِّـلۡمُؤۡمِنِيۡنَۙ وَلَا يَزِيۡدُ الظّٰلِمِيۡنَ اِلَّا خَسَارًا
(17:82) What We are sending down in the course of revealing the Qur'an is a healing and a grace for those who have faith; but it adds only to the ruin of the wrong-doers.
That is, "Those people who make the Qur'an their guide and their book of law, are favored with the blessing of Allah and arc cured of all their mental, psychological, moral. and cultural diseases. On the other hand, those wicked people who reject this and turn their back on its guidance, in fact, are unjust to themselves. Therefore, the Qur'an does not allow them to remain even in that bad condition in which they were before its revelation or its knowledge but involves them in a greater loss than before. This is because before the revelation of the Qur'an or their acquaintance with it, they suffered from ignorance alone but when the Qur'an came before them and made distinct the difference between Truth and falsehood, no excuse was left with them to remain in their previous condition of. ignorance. After this, if they reject its guidance and persist in their deviation, it is a clear proof that they are not ignorant but workers of iniquity and worshipers of falsehood, which are averse to the Truth. For then their position is of the one who, when presented with both poison and elixir, makes a choice of poison. Therefore, they themselves are in that cast fully responsible for their deviation and whatever crimes they commit after that, shall incur their full punishment. It is obvious that the consequent loss of wickedness must be far greater than the loss of ignorance. The Holy Prophet has summed this up in this concise and comprehensive sentence: "The Qur'an is either an argument in your favor or against you."
Tafsir Ibn-Kathir: (The Qur'an is a Cure and a Mercy)
Allah tells us that His Book, which He has revealed to His Messenger Muhammad, the Qur'an to which falsehood cannot come, from before it or behind it, (it is) sent down by the All-Wise, Worthy of all praise, is a cure and a mercy for the believers, meaning that it takes away whatever is in their hearts of doubt, hypocrisy, Shirk, confusion and inclination towards falsehood. The Qur'an cures all of that. It is also a mercy through which one attains faith and wisdom and seeks goodness. This is only for those who believe in it and accept it as truthful, it is a cure and a mercy only for such people. As for the disbeliever who is wronging himself by his disbelief, when he hears the Qur'an, it only makes him further from the truth and increases him in his disbelief. The problem lies with the disbeliever himself, not with the Qur'an, as Allah says:
(قُلْ هُوَ لِلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ هُدًى وَشِفَآءٌ وَالَّذِينَ لاَ يُؤْمِنُونَ فِى ءَاذَانِهِمْ وَقْرٌ وَهُوَ عَلَيْهِمْ عَمًى أُوْلَـئِكَ يُنَادَوْنَ مِن مَّكَانٍ بَعِيدٍ Say: "It is for those who believe, a guide and a cure. And as for those who disbelieve, there is heaviness in their ears, and it is blindness for them. They are those who are called from a place far away (so they neither listen nor understand).'') ﴿41:44﴾
And whenever there comes down a Surah, some of them (hypocrites) say: "Which of you has had his faith increased by it'' As for those who believe, it has increased their faith, and they rejoice. But as for those whose hearts is a disease, it will add suspicion and doubt to their suspicion, disbelief and doubt; and they die while they are disbelievers.) (9:124-125) And there are many other similar Ayat.
And We send down of the Qur'an that which is a cure and a mercy to the believers,) Qatadah said, "When the believer hears it, he benefits from it and memorizes it and understands it.''
(وَلاَ يَزِيدُ الظَّـلِمِينَ إَلاَّ خَسَارًا and it increases the wrongdoers in nothing but loss.) They do not benefit from it or memorize it or understand it, for Allah has made this Qur'an a cure and a mercy for the believers.
Yusuf Ali Explanation:
In Allah's revelation there is healing for our broken spirits, hope for our spiritual future, and joy in the forgiveness of our sins. All who work in faith will share in these privileges. It is only the rebels against Allah's Law who will suffer loss. The more they oppose Truth, the deeper down will they go into the mire-the state of sin and Wrath, which is worse than destruction.
Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:
“We bestow of the Qur’ān do from on high what serves as a healing and a blessing to true believers.” (Verse 82) There is certainly a cure and a blessing for those whose hearts are full of faith. Such hearts brighten up and become ready to receive what the Qur’ān imparts of grace, reassurance and security. There is in the Qur’ān a healing power that cures obsession, anxiety and hesitation. It establishes a bond between the believer’s heart and God. This bond imparts inner peace to the believer as he experiences a feeling of security in God’s protection. He is happy and satisfied with what he receives from God and contented with his lot in life. Anxiety, hesitation and obsession are all terrible to experience. As the Qur’ān dispels all these, it is indeed a blessing for true believers.
In the Qur’ān we have a cure from carnal desires, greed, envy and evil thoughts. All these cause sicknesses of the heart and mind, leading to debility and utter ruin. As the Qur’ān cures these, it is a tool of grace bestowed by God on those who truly believe in Him.
The Qur’ān also provides a cure from deviant thoughts and feelings. It protects the mind from going far astray, while allowing it complete freedom within its fruitful pursuits. It stops the mind from wasting its energy over what is devoid of use. It lays down for it a sound approach that ensures good and useful results. The same principle applies to the human body, ensuring that its resources are utilized for what is useful and fruitful, steering human beings away from the suppression of natural desires or indulgence without restraint. Thus, it ensures a healthy body. In this again we see that the Qur’ān is a means of God’s grace that is bestowed on believers.
There is also in the Qur’ān a cure for social ailments that weaken the structure of society and destroy its peace and security. Under the social system established by the Qur’ān society enjoys perfect justice in peace and security. This is again a further aspect of grace bestowed through the Qur’ān.
However, the Qur’ān “only adds to the ruin of the evildoers.” (Verse 82) They make no use of the cure it provides or the blessings it brings about. They look with dismay at the believers as they feel proud to be among the followers of the Qur’ān. In their stubborn arrogance, the evildoers persist with their corrupt and unjust methods. Yet in this life, they are defeated by the followers of the Qur’ān, which makes them losers. In the life to come, they suffer for their arrogant disbelief and tyranny, and thus they lose again. Hence the Qur’ān adds to their ruin.
Concluding remarks:

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.
Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.
May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.
Note: When we mention God in our posts, we mean One True God, we call Allah in Islam, with no associates. Allah is the Sole Creator of all things, and that Allah is all-powerful and all-knowing. Allah has no offspring, no race, no gender, no body, and is unaffected by the characteristics of human life.
