Eminent Companions of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him)

A large number of early Muslims who embraced Islam during life of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and had the privilege of seeing and interacting with him are known as the "Sahaba" (plural of Sahabi - the companion).  The Companions, being eyewitnesses, have been the most authentic sources of Ḥadīth, the record of Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ sayings and activities.

We are starting a series of posts from today on to talk about the life and achievements of some of these blessed Muslims who had the privilege of being very close to the Prophet of Allah and contributed tremendously to the cause and spread of Islam, besides rendering exclusive company to the Prophet of Allah. Attributing his great admiration to his companions, the Prophet of Allah once remarked: “My companions are like the stars. Whichever one you follow, you’ll be guided.”

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) spoke very high of his companions and the believers who embraced Islam. "The best of my nation is my generation then those who follow them and then those who follow them."

Scroll down for list of the revered companions

Thus the companions are considered the best generation of the Islamic nation. And by knowing them more, we learn about the Prophet of Allah and the times of difficulties they braved to spread Islam with an extreme devotion to the religion of Islam. So we need to know them more and their services to Islam and love for the Prophet of Allah. The Companions of the Holy Prophet were indeed the best of all people. Ibn Masood, one of the Companions, said: "Indeed Allah, the Exalted, chose Muhammad ﷺ  as His Prophet, for he was the most pious of His slaves, and Allah sent him with the Message. Allah then chose the Companions of the Prophet to be with the Prophet as they were the best of all people after him." [2]

Since list of these blessed Muslims is very long, we will try to present the life and achievements of some of the most eminent and revered companions. These would also include the first four caliphs, who are the ṣaḥābah held in highest esteem among Sunnite Muslims and are part of a group of 10 Companions, known as the Ashra Mubashra,  to whom prophet Muhammad ﷺ promised paradise.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) named ten of his companions which he said would be blessed with paradise in the hereafter.  The Prophet of Allah named "Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali (the first four caliphs) , Talhah, Al-Zubayr,  Abdul-Rahman ibn Awf,   Sa`d ibn Abi Waqqas,  Sa`id ibn Zayd and Abu `Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah ."
We will also include some very close companions in the series under this heading which though not named in the ten blessed ones, but were still very close and dear to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)

Court rules Insulting Prophet Muhammad not covered by freedom of expression

Freedom of speech and expression are good to air one's inner self so long these do not hurt a person,  a group or a community. It is often seen in the West, however, that this liberty has been misused when it comes to one's personal beliefs, faith and religion. And when it comes to religion, Islam is the most targeted religion around the world. The making of caricatures in France a few years ago, though had a protection of freedom of speech and expression ruling, it did hurt the Muslims all over the world,  but their protests were never registered, for the people of other faiths other than Islam find in convenient to take their inborn revenge against Islam under the protection of this ruling.

However, there has been a breeze of fresh air as a court has recently ruled that Insulting Prophet Muhammad not covered by freedom of expression and it is liable to punishment. And how so true this is as Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is more dearer to the Muslims than even their families. While the Christians and Jews may mock their prophets, the Muslims would never allow this at any cost.

The court ruling came in a case in which an Austrian national identified as Mrs. S. held two seminars in 2009, entitled “Basic Information on Islam,” in which she defamed the Prophet Muhammad’s marriage.

According to a statement released by the court on Thursday, the Vienna Regional Criminal Court found that these statements implied that Muhammad had pedophilic tendencies, and in February 2011 convicted Mrs. S. for disparaging religious doctrines.

A panel of seven-judges of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) on Thursday, 25th October 2018,  ruled that: "Defaming the Prophet Muhammad “goes beyond the permissible limits of an objective debate" and "could stir up prejudice and put at risk religious peace” and thus exceeds the permissible limits of freedom of expression" and upheld the decision of a lower court decision. [1]

The court’s decision follows common sense and decency, yet will undoubtedly upset many on the far-right and so-called “liberals” that routinely appeal to “free speech” to spread falsehoods and attack disadvantaged minorities—ironically the very objectives for the introduction of free speech laws in the first place. [2]

It may be added that Austria is considered to be one of the most Islamophobic countries in Europe at present. The right-wing coalition came to power by promising to deal with the migrant crisis and stirring up anti-Muslim sentiment. And only in June this year, the chancellor Sebastian Kurz shut down seven mosques and expelled up to 60 imams, invoking the usual racist dog whistles of “parallel societies, political Islam and radicalization”. The Miracle of Moon Split

One of the miracles attributed to the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) is the splitting of the moon. although the subject has been supported and criticized by both Muslims and Non Muslims,. but the fact remains that heavenly and prophetic miracles cannot be proved or supported by science or any logical explanation. The miracles happen through prophets as by these Allah sends messages to the non believers of his absolute power and ability to do wonders or miracles much beyond the comprehension or wisdom of man.

Talking of miracles, no science or mathematical calculations prove the making of a giant boat by Prophet Noah that carried pair of each existing animals of the time beside his own people. Nor has science been ale to prove the magnitude of the flood that followed and drowned the entire world under its enormous amount of water.

Likewise, the ability given to Prophet Eesa (Jesus, peace be upon him) to cure the lepers and blind and raising of the dead. No one has ever questioned these miracles ever as these suit some of the religions earlier than Islam. Since Islam is seen as a threat to their faith, many non Muslims authors, scholars and religious men have taken upon them to negate and mock the miracles attributed to Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).

However, the purpose of this post is not to open a debate forum to prove who and what is right. Instead this post is only to describe the miracle of splitting of the moon attributed to Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). However, since the miracle has been mentioned in the Holy Qur'an, we Muslims believe it to be absolute true as nothing in the Qur'an has ever been proven wrong.

The incident is mentioned in the Holy Qur'an as under:
The Hour has come near, and the moon has split [in two]. And if they see a miracle, they turn away and say, "Passing magic." And they denied and followed their inclinations. But for every matter is a [time of] settlement. (Al Qur'an 54: Surah Al Qamar Verses 1-3)
It so happened that one night when Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) was out of the city of Makkah in an open area of Mina in the company of the non believers, the latter demanded of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) to show that a miracle as a proof of his prophet-hood, like splitting of the moon. The moon shone above as bright and full as it was the 14th of the moon rise day.

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) silently prayed to Allah (subḥānahu wa ta'āla - glorified and exalted be He) and asked to bestow upon him the miracle demanded to split the moon. A short while later, Angel Jibraeel (Gabriel) informed the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) that Allah had accepted his prayer. Then the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) raised his index finger and made of gesture sideways and the moon was seen split into two and seen cleft asunderOn seeing the moon split, the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)  said to his companions, 'Bear witness (to this). This how Allah saves His chosen ones, prophets and messengers from humiliation in front of pagans and the non believers.

Those who do not believe in the word of Qur'an or the commandment of Allah may know that it was foretold in the Qur'an about the victory of the Rome against the Persians which a prophet, what a to say even a false prophet, could not have predicted. And as predicted in the Qur'an, the Rome did rise and avenged their humiliating defeat. And if this is not all, there are many references and revelations that science later proved to be right and some still remain which someday will find answers.

The Miraculous Journey of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) to Jerusalem (Israa) and Heavens (Mairaj)

Just a year before migration (Hijrah) of Prophet Muhammad (peace by upon him - ﷺ) from Makkah to Medina, a miracle took place when Allah had the prophet toured Masjid Al Aqsa in Jerusalem and from their his accession to the seven skies and Heavens when Allah spoke to Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)  with a hijab in between. His flight at night from Makkah to Jerusalem is called as "Israa (In Arabic Israa means walking or traveling at night)" and his accession to Heavens is known as Mairaj (in Arabic Mairaj means ladder, rising or accession). This miraculous journey happened on the night of 27 Rajab, 621 CE.

The event is described in the Holy Qur'an as under:
Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al- Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing." (Al Qur'an Surah Al Israa 17:1)
As later revealed by Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) himself to his companions, he was taken on a heavenly steed called "Buraq" brought by Angel Jibraeel (Gabriel) from Makkah to the farthest mosque in Jerusalem. The mosque is quoted to be the Masjid Al Aqsa, the first Qibla or the direction in which Muslims were asked to offer their prayers. From here Angel Jibraeel and Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) ascended to the Heavens and had the honour of speaking directly to Allah Almighty.

The event of Mairaj is mentioned in Qur'an not directly but those who can correlate the events can best understand the Heavenly language:
"And [remember, O Muhammad], when We told you, "Indeed, your Lord has encompassed the people." And We did not make the sight which We showed you except as a trial for the people, as was the accursed tree [mentioned] in the Qur'an. And We threaten them, but it increases them not except in great transgression." (Al Quran Surah Al Israa 17:60)
And he certainly saw him in another descent,
At the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary -
Near it is the Garden of Refuge -
When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered [it].
The sight [of the Prophet] did not swerve, nor did it transgress [its limit].
He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord.
(Al Qur'an Surah Al Najm 53:13–18)
Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) offed prayers at a place of Prophet Musa (Moses) and then Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) lead a prayer at Masjid al Aqsa which was attended by a number of exalted prophets like Prophets Ibraheem (Abraham), Musa (Moses) and Eesa (Jesus), peace be upon them all.

From the same place, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) was taken up to the Heavens by Angel Jibraeel and shown the seven levels of the sky and Heavens. At each level Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) met the most revered prophets:  At the first level he met the father of all prophets Adam, followed by Prophet Zackariah (John the Baptist and Prophet Eesa (Jesus), Prophet Yousaf (Joseph), Prophet Idris, Prophet Haroun (Aaron), Prophet Musa (Moses) and last Prophet Ibraheem (Abraham).

After the prayer, Angel Jibraeel (Gabriel) brought two bowls; one of had wine and the other had milk, and asked to “Have either of them!" Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) chose the milk. Angel Jibraeel said to the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), "You chose the natural one; if you had chosen the wine, your ummah would have gone astray after you. You were led to the natural state by choosing the milk; your ummah was led to the natural state, too. Wine was rendered haram (forbidden) for you!”

Thereafter, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) visited Bayt al Mamoor (the much frequented house), which seventy thousand angels visited every day. This was followed by visit to to Sidra al-Muntaha (Lote Tree of the Extremity). Sidra al-Muntaha is a tree the roots of which are on the sixth level with branches all over the seventh level, thus providing a shadow that covers the whole sky and Paradise; its leaves are like elephant ears and its fruits are like large jars.

Form thereafter, Angel Jibraeel told the prophet that from then on he was to travel alone to the seventh level as his wings would burn from the Noor (Light) of the Allah Almighty. There on the seventh level, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)  met his Creator Allah the Almighty with a hijab in between, though at some places it is mentioned that Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)  met Allah face to face. This seems a little exaggeration as Allah is not a human form but a source of immense light as was witnessed by Prophet Musa (Moses) at Jabl e Toor when he received the famous Ten Commandments.

Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)  is also said to have toured the Heaven and Hell and was shown how the blessed and the cursed will live their lives in hereafter. Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)  was also asked by Allah that all Muslims should pray for 50 times a day. When he descended and Prophet Mus asked him what he brought for his followers, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)  replied: 50 prayers. To this Prophet Musa asked Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)  to go back as his followers will not able to pray 50 times a day. Prophet Muhammad (?) went and had the prayers reduced to 45 times. Once again Prophet Musa showed his reservation and asked to Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)  to have the number reduced. This continued till the number was finally reduced to five. Although Prophet Musa still insisted for a further reduction, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)  replied that he would fell embarrassed for any more request. Thus Muslims since then offer prayers five times a day, though some still not completing the total count as appreciated by Prophet Musa.

Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) then descended to place of Masjid Al Aqsa where he had tied the heavenly steed Buraq at the gate of the masjid, mounted on Buraq and returned to Makkah. The entire journey took place between the the night prayer and the morning prayer. This is just a shortened description of Israa and Mairaj. For complete details you may consult the sites given in reference.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH): Migration to Medina (Hijrah) and Miracle of Allah

A major milestone in the history of Islam is the decision by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him - ) to migrate from Makkah to Media, then called Yathrib. The decision was not easy or entirely by the prophet himself, but it was rather forced upon him due to the ever increasing treacheries of the non believers of Makkah since the open proclamation of Islam by the prophet. The poor newly converted Muslims were the main target of the non believers who where and when found were subjected to extreme torture and their house ransacked.

In the meantime, there was a parallel development taking place in the city of Yathrib in the form of power politics. The state of unrest was mainly due to a long ongoing dispute between the local Arabs and the Jews, which had resulted into many bloody clashes costing precious lives. Thus a delegation from Yathrib elders visited Prophet Muhammad ()  in Makkah and requested him to be their arbitrator to bring peace to the community.

Prophet Muhammad ()  thus decided to migrate to Yathrib to find him a breathing space away from the hostile non believers of Makkah and thus asked his followers to slowly and gradually to head for Yathrib.

The non believers came to know of plan of migration of Prophet Muhammad () and decided to assassinate him before he too left. They thus planned the raid on the night before move of Prophet Muhammad (). Sensing the danger, Prophet Muhammad () had already left his cousin Ali ibn Talib and surreptitiously left Makkah along with his trusted friend and companion Abu Bakr. The presence of Ali in the house of the prophet frustrated the non believers and they sent out armed horsemen to follow Prophet Muhammad ()  and his companion on the route to Yathrib.

By dawn Prophet Muhammad () and Abu Bakr had reached a cave called Thawr and decided to take shelter in there to avoid detection. They stayed there for three days. One day one of the armed teams reached the mouth of the cave and both Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)  and his companions could hear their voices outside. This rather scared Abu Bakr, but at that time Prophet Muhammad ()  assured him of Allah's protection and said: “How can you be apprehensive about two with whom is a third, especially when the third one is Allah (ﷻ)?” And true to assurance of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) the team after some time retracted and went back.

Unknown to both, Allah (ﷻ) had sent a spider that built its web on the mouth of the cave and a pair of doves came and made a nest near the cave mouth and laid eggs. The armed team when saw these two signs thought no one could have entered the cave from the intact web and disturbing the doves. The miracle of Allah thus saved the two.

The episode of Thawr is mentioned in Qur'an as under:
If ye help not (your leader), (it is no matter): for Allah did indeed help him, when the Unbelievers drove him out: he had no more than one companion; they two were in the cave, and he said to his companion, “Have no fear, for Allah is with us”: then Allah sent down His peace upon him, and strengthened him with forces which ye saw not, and humbled to the depths the word of the Unbelievers. But the word of Allah is exalted to the heights: for Allah is Exalted in might, Wise.“ [Surah Al Taubah 9:40]
Once reassured of their safety, the prophet and his companion left of Yathrib on the fourth day. Back in Yathrib, the Muslims who had earlier migrated from Makkah along with locals eagerly waited for the prophet. They would queue up at the mouth of Makkah - Yathrib route awaiting for their revered guests.

Upon their arrival, they were greeted by the locals and everyone wanted the Prophet Muhammad () to stay with them. The Prophet Muhammad ()  who was riding his white camel "Qiswa" said that whereever her camel stops, he would stay with that household. The camel kept wandering in the streets followed by the crowd wanting to know who the blessed host of Prophet Muhammad () would be. Finally the camel sat in front of the house one Abu Ayub Ansaari. Prophet Muhammad () stayed with his host till his abode was ready and shifted there. The house of Abu Ayub Ansaari is part of Masjid e Quba.

The life at Yathrib and the later part of life of Prophet Muhammad () will be covered in the next post.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) : Open Proclamation of Islam

For three years Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) spread the word of Allah surreptitiously and quietly. The newly converted Muslims also kept low as most of them were hesitant to reveal their new identity as they could have attracted a strong reaction from the non believers of Makkah.

The population of Muslims increased slowly and by 613, three years since 610 when the first verses of Qur'an were revealed onto Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) Allah commanded the prophet to openly spread the word of Allah. That was the day of great joy for the Muslims as they following the prophet came out of their houses loudly speaking the first kalima, "There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is messenger of Allah."

Naturally this infuriated the non believers as except for a modest community which believed in oneness of God, all believed in countless gods and worshiped their idols placed in and around the Ka'ba, once built by Prophet Ibraheem (Abraham, peace be upon him) with the aid of his son Prophet Ismail (Ishmael, peace be upon him) to be the home of Allah.

The emergence of a new religion started ringing bells of alarm in he rank and file of big merchants of Makkah as any unrest in Makkah was a direct threat to their trade and relations with other non Muslims tribes near and far.

But the real strong reaction came from the non believers or infidels as they are mostly called when the prophet proclaimed that worshiping of the idols was an unforgivable sin and that polytheism they had been practicing was against the spirit of Islam and oneness of Allah.

Initially, the rich and famous of Makkah politely requested Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) not to denounce the religion and faith of his forefathers and even his own tribe Bani Hashim, which was entrusted with the upkeep and maintenance of Ka'aba and looking after the trade caravans coming to Makkah. But Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) flatly refused and continued with his Godly mission. They then try to bribe him with wealth, a place in the elite of Makkah and even asked him to pick up any woman he wanted from the women of Makkah. But these wordily gifts were nothing against the benefits Allah had promised for the Muslims both during this world and hereafter.

The non believers then approached Abu Talib, the ailing and very old uncle of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and requested him to persuade his nephew from propagating his new religion. When Abu Talib called his nephew and conveyed him the message of the non believers, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: Even if they place sun on my one hand the moon on the other, I would not fall back from what he was commanded to do by Allah.

With this open negation of their request, the non believers joined hands and become extremely hostile to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his followers. And everyday there would be open scenes of torture of Muslims to scare away other potential followers of Islam. The earliest martyrs of Islam were a very old couple who were slaves of a rich merchant of Makkah, Abu Jahal. The wife Sumayyah bint Khayyat was stretched on burning sand of Makkah with her hands and legs stretched out bound. When she still refused to denounce Islam, Abu Jahal killed her with his spear. Her husband too was tortured and killed, both right in front of their son.

Bilal was a African slave, whose master Umayyah ibn Khalaf when came to know of Bilal's acceptance of Islam, he too was laid down on the burning sands with only a short cloth covering his lower half and a heavy stone placed on his chest. Despite the pain and burning, Bilal continued to call "Ahad (meaning Allah is one)." The ritual continued for many days till his master left him for being no use to him.

Following increased hostility of the people of Makkah, the prophet allowed a group of Muslims to Ethiopian Kingdom of Aksum, which was then ruled by a just and kind Christian king Najashi. The non believers sent a contingent to Najashi to persuade hm to return the Muslims but when Najashi asked them to tell him what Muslims thought of Jesus, they narrated the entire episode of how Jesus was born as a miracle of Allah and how he was chosen to be a prophet. Listening to these divine verses, the King found truth in the Quranic verses and allowed them to live peacefully in his country.

Hoping no turning back of Muslims to their original faith, the notables of  Makhzum and Banu Abd-Shams tribes boycotted the Banu Hashim tribe, to which the prophet belonged to and were denied of all food and water for almost three years. This was the worst time for the Muslims of Makkah and the cries of women and children due to hunger and thirst could be heard in Makkah but the non believers were unmoved. It was only after three years that the boycott ended and the Muslims were allowed back in Makkah.

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was to suffer yet a fatal blow of events in 619 when one after the other his uncle Abu Talib, who even though had not accepted Islam continued to support and protect his nephew against the powerful elite of Makkah, and prophets wife Khadija passed away.  The year is thus known as the "Year of Sorrow" in Muslim history.

After Abu Talib, his brother Abu Lahab took over the reins of Banu Hashim. Lahab was a staunch infidel and deadly against his nephew. With him at the head of the tribe, Lahab served all links with Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). This left him in extreme danger and made him vulnerable to the treacherous attitude of the infidels. He thus tried to seek refuge and protection from other tribes and even traveled to Taif, a hilly and pleasant place of Arabia. But there too the non believers treated him unjustly and stoned him and he was wounded to an extent that Angel Jibraeel (Gabriel) came to him and asked his permission to destroy the town and people of Taif. But the prophet exercised extreme restraint and came back to Makkah.

Since the life in Makkah had become very difficult at the hands of the non believers, the prophet finally decided to migrate to Yathrib (now called Madina), his ancestral town. And in 620, All Muslims of Makkah left for Yathrib in groups though still being chased by the infidels but all made it safely to Yathrib. This left the prophet and a few companions back in Makkah till they also migrated to Yathrib.

During the last days of stay in Makkah, two miracles happened that still mystifies the world: The splitting of the moon and The Miraculous Journey of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) to Jerusalem (Israa) and Heavens (Mairaj). Read details about these two and many other important events by clicking on MORE (the last heading on the blue bar) and click on Major Events in History on the drop down menu.

A detailed account of prophet's migration will be posted in our next post.

Jewish perception of Islam as Idolatrous

I have written a few posts as to how Islam and other faiths differ. Today I just thought to find out how other faiths view Islam. And I was appalled to come across some Jewish sites which gave out a view point of the Jews about Islam and labeling it as Idolatrous.

This was something that came as a total surprise as we as Muslim while believing in the total absoluteness of Allah, God as understood by Jews and to an extent by Christians in their overall concept of Trinity, also dispel any notion of bowing in front of idols of any kind. In fact, upon conquest of Makkah, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) cleansed the Ka'aba of all idols placed in there by the infidels.

But then another revelation still amazed me that speaks of the total ignorance of the Jew scholars about who we bow in front of when praying. Read the following excerpts, with special reference to the lines highlighted in bold italics:
I mentioned earlier that almost all authorities accepted Maimonides’ view of Islam. There is, however, one authority, who, while most cryptic, appears to be leaning in the opposite direction. In a medieval commentary erroneously attributed to the famous sage, Rabbi Nissim Gerondi (c.1310‑1375), but actually written by an unknown later scholar, one finds a shocking opinion, in the course of “R. Nissim’s” discussion, of Christians bowing to holy objects and Muslims bowing to Muhammad[!] Although the comment is not entirely clear, it appears to be saying that even though the Muslims do not turn Muhammad into a God, one must regard their (supposed) action of bowing down to him as idolatry, thus putting them in the category of idolaters.
Now here comes the ignorance of the Jew scholars. We Muslims while regard Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in extremely high, revered and exalted position as the last of all the prophets chosen by Allah and blessed him with the last of the holy scriptures The Holy Qur'an, we never pretend or mean to be bowing in front of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) while prostate in our prayers for he was just a human being chosen by Allah to be His last prophet.
Say (O Muhammad), "I am only a man like you, to whom has been revealed that your god is one God. So, whoever would hope for the meeting with his Lord - let him do righteous work and not associate in the worship of his Lord anyone." (Qur'an Surah Al Kahf 18:110)
Equating someone to Allah is the biggest sin in Islam:
In Islam, shirk (Arabic: شرك‎ šhirk) is the sin of practicing idolatry or polytheism, i.e. the deification or worship of anyone or anything besides the singular God, i.e. Allah. Literally, it means ascribing or the establishment of "partners" placed beside God.
In the Holy Qur'an, Allah the Almighty at many places warn the people against equating anyone with Him, for He alone is worthy of worship, is the master of the universe and master of the Day of Judgment:
Yet there are men who take (for worship) others besides Allah, as equal (with Allah.: They love them as they should love Allah. But those of Faith are overflowing in their love for Allah. If only the unrighteous could see, behold, they would see the penalty: that to Allah belongs all power, and Allah will strongly enforce the penalty. (Surah Al-Baqara, 165)
Say: "O People of the Book! come to common terms as between us and you: That we worship none but Allah. That we associate no partners with him; that we erect not, from among ourselves, Lords and patrons other than Allah." If then they turn back, say ye: "Bear witness that we (at least) are Muslims (bowing to Allah's Will). (Surah Al-Imran, 64)
Surely Allah does not forgive that anything should be associated with him, and forgives what is besides that to whomsoever He pleases, and whoever associates anything with Allah, he devises indeed a great sin.” (Surah an-Nisā’ 4:48)
In the light of above commandments of Allah in the Holy Quran, we as Muslims cannot think of bowing or prostrating in front of anyone except Allah alone. We revere Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) the same way Jews revere Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) and Christians who revere Prophet Eesa (Jesus, peace be upon him). No one bows in front of prophets, so do we Muslims too. It is only Christians who consider Jesus as one of the Gods when they talk of Trinity. In that sense Christianity could be labelled as Idolatrous, not Islam.

Thus, calling us idolatrous is extremely absurd, highly preposterous, objectionable and detesting. I wonder how come the so called learned Jewish scholars could ever label us idolatrous, thinking we bow and prostrate in front of a human being and not in front of the Almighty Allah, the creator of this universe who has no parallel. In fact, equating someone with Allah is considered as the most unforgivable sin.

I wonder how come Jews could think or interpret Islam Idolatrous by saying that Muslims prostrate in front of a prophet who was human like all of us. In this age of technology and availability of instant and detailed knowledge about religions and faiths, one can easily find the truth. Gone are the days when religious preachers, in this case rabbis, could mislead their people through their sermons.

However, there are some Jewish scholars who view the above mindset as incorrect. Read the following views:
This is a dramatic deviation from Maimonides’ view, and it is shocking that “R. Nissim” does not even refer to his predecessor. In any event, the authentic R. Nissim did not hold to this view, and we are in possession of a *responsum of his in which he declares unambiguously that Islam is not a form of idolatry.
a written reply by a rabbi or Talmudic scholar to an inquiry on some matter of Jewish law
In fact, some scholars believe that:
Hardly any attempt is made in the classical Jewish sources to distinguish between different kinds of pagan or primitive worship such as animism, fetishism, and polytheism. All forms of worship that are not purely monotheistic are treated together as idolatry and severely condemned.
I hope I have tried to put across the view point of us Muslims and that of those who think that Islam has been misunderstood and being followers of a monotheist Allah, we cannot be labeled as Idolatrous.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

Note: When we mention God in our posts, we mean One True God, we call Allah in Islam, with no associates. Allah is the Sole Creator of all things, and that Allah is all-powerful and all-knowing. Allah has no offspring, no race, no gender, no body, and is unaffected by the characteristics of human life.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) - The Dawn of Prophethood

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) before the first revelation unto him, beside being a thriving businessman, was a restless man too. The injustices around him, the treatment of the poor at the hands of the wealthy merchants of Makkah, the never ending tribal feuds and moral degeneration of the society concerned him the most. Finding no solution to the misgivings around him, he started to spend his extra time in seclusion and praying endlessly. He would often go out of Makkah and take solace in a cave, called Hira in Mount Jabal e Noor some three miles out of the city.

He would many days in the cave praying to some divine power he had no idea of. Then as the time went by, he started seeing bright light in his dreams and he often wondered what that light could be. He did not know that it was the divine light perhaps testing him for the last time for award of the prophet hood.

And then night it finally happened. While he was engrossed in his prayers, Angel Gabriel came, a sight which terribly frightened him. The Angel asked him to READ. To which he replied that he could not read. The angel came forward and embraced him so tightly that could feel his bones cracking. The Angel released him and then asked him again to READ. He again said that he could not and the Angel again embraced him tightly and asked him to READ for the third time. When he still gave the same reply, the Angel embraced him for the third time and then said:
“Read in the name of thy Lord Who created: Created man from a clot of blood. Recite! Thy Lord is the Most Beneficent, Who taught man by the pen, taught him what he knew not”
(Later these verses became the opening verses of Surah Alaq (Clot) 96:2-6)
When he repeated the words as commanded, he started to swat profusely as these heavenly commands were to heavy to bear. He therefore rushed home and asked his wife Khadija to cover him. After a while when he gained control over him, he narrated the entire episode to his wife.

Next morning his wife Khadija took him to one of his cousins Waraqa ibn Nawafal, who was a devout Christian and had was a wise man. Though very old and blind, he was able to listen to what had happened to Muhammad (peace be upon him) and said: You must have been visited by Namoos (that was how Angel Gabriel called in old scriptures) who also visited Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him), but feared that one day his own people will drive him out. This really surprised Muhammad (peace be upon him) and asked why would his people drive him out? Nawafal said that in the past whenever such tidings were brought from heaven to a person, people never believed him and was treated unjustly. Nawafal wished he were alive to that day and would have supported him and his truth.

Although Waraqa ibn Nawafal passed away shortly thereafter, his prediction were to come true in letter and spirit as Muhammad (peace be upon him) from then was to live a difficult life and the non believers of Makkah made his life miserable and difficult. But for prophets such are the hostilities they had to face as did Moses and Jesus and many others.

Among the first few people who embraced Islam at the hand of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in the very first instant they heard of his heavenly revelation included his wife Khadija, his cousin Ali, then aged 10 years), Zaid bin Haritha (Prophet's adopted son) and Abu Baker (Prophet's best friend and companion). Khadijah was thus the first woman to embrace Islam and the first woman to pray with him.

The life of Muhammad (peace be upon him) as last of the prophets will be discussed in the next post.

Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him): Early Life

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), is the last of the prophets of Allah in the long lineage of prophets that Allah sent to the mankind to show them the righteous path chosen by Allah for the guidance of mankind and save them from the fire of hell. Those who believe in words of Allah have been following Allah's divine message and commandments and carrying on to obey Allah's continued guidance for they may be forgiven.

Allah revealed His commandments in four holy scriptures to prophets Dawood (David), Musa (Moses), Eesa (Jesus) and last of all to Muhammad (may peace be upon them all) and accordingly followers of Allah's divine messages, the believers continued to follow each new message for all messengers and prophets carried the same message, improving upon the previous revelations. Thus we as Muslims not only believe in all the prophets before Muhammad (peace be upon him), but also the previous scriptures too.

However, people of scriptures before the holy Qur'an, the fourth and the last holy scriptures more often than not tend to believe in the finality of their scriptures and refuse to accept the scripture that followed theirs, even when there are clear indications that the final word from Allah is still to come. And Alhamdo Lillah more and more people are embracing Islam for it shows the ultimate truth and guides the mankind to the final word of Allah.

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was chosen from the land of barren and rugged mountains and deserts of Arabia to be the last of the prophets to receive the last of the holy scriptures, the Holy Qur'an, for the ultimate guidance of mankind till the day of judgment. Now in a series of posts, I will deliberate on the life of Prophet (peace be upon him) in the various phases of his life till the revelation of Qur'an finally completed. In this post, I will concentrate on the early life of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) till the dawn of prophet hood when he turned forty.

The landscape of Arabia around 570 AD was quite hostile, both weather and tribal enmity wise. The scorching heat of deserts of Arabia restricted the population near oases or mountain folds. Makkah and Yathrib were the two thriving cities; the former being a trade hub and the latter being a farming paradise. Those were the times when tribal rivalries were at their peak and Makkah was the certain of idol worshipers. Around 360 idols were placed inside and outside of the Ka'ba, a holy place built by prophet Ibraheem (Abraham) ad his son Ismail (Ishmael), peace be upon them, as a home of Allah. But by and by it became a hose of world gods as Allah's messages and guidance faded from the bitter and stubborn hearts of the nomad Arabs. Those were the times when infant girls were buried alive as the families felt ashamed of having girls born to them.

With Allah's divine messages almost lost and the people of Arabia had digressed from what Allah had revealed for their guidance through His early prophets and Messengers, a boy was born around 570 AD in Makkah to the house of Abd Allah bin Al Muttalib of the noble clan of Banu Hashim. The father had died six months before the birth of his son and his grandfather Muttalib named his grandson as Muhammad, meaning "to praise, to glorify," and took over his responsibility. Muhammad's mother Amna sent her son to a wet nurse Halima to outskirts of Makkah, as the norm was, to be raised in the openness of nomad areas. This allowed young Muhammad to the rigours of nomad life right from his early days.

Muhammad was six when his mother died and he was then placed in the custody of his grandfather. His grandfather was then the custodian of Ka'ba and was held in high esteem. From here on in the patronage of his grandfather, he met signatories and merchants who to Ka'aba and was educated in the company of the elite and those who mattered in business. But his grandfather was not to live long and passed away in 578. His further upbringing thus fell on his uncle Abu Talib, a merchant by trade. While he accompanied his uncle on trade tours, he also reared herds of sheep, something which all prophets did before him. His tours with trade caravans made him interested in trade and soon became part of this profession. Right from the outset, his integrity and character and fair dealing earned him a respectable position was started to be called Al Ameen, a person that can be trusted.

As his repetition spread,  a wealthy widow Khadija of Makkah, a distant cousins of his, asked him to carry her good for trade. His fair dealings brought profits to Khadija beyond her expectations and impressed by his honesty, she sent a proposal of marriage to him through his uncle. Thus they both were married when he was 25 and Khadija was 40. They both had six off springs, two male and four female. However both sons died in their very early age.

The place Muhammad enjoyed as just and an honest man was amply demonstrated when the Black Stone of Ka'aba was to be placed back after it was removed for the renovation of the Ka'aba structure, this was somewhere in 605 CE. Since it was a sacred stone, a clash arose between the chieftains of Makkah as to who would place the stone back to its place. When they could not come to a solution, they decided that first person that enters Ka'aba the next morning would be entrusted with the task. It so happened that young Muhammad, aged 35, walked in and was asked for the solution agreed by all. Muhammad (peace be upon him) asked them to place the stone on a piece of cloth and lifted by all chieftains till the stone is brought to its place. When it was done so, he picked the black stone and placed it at its exact position.

Although Muhammad was a thriving businessman, he had some emptiness deep inside him and thus would take time out and go out on the mountains overlooking Makkah and prayed, sometimes for days altogether. The cave of Hira in the mountain of Jabal-e-Noor was his favourite place to find solace and mediation. And it was here at the age of forty that he received the first revelation from Allah through Angel Gabriel and his journey of prophet hood began.

To be continued in separate posts on his life from hereafter as Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him.

Prophet Muhammad's Guidelines on How to Attend to One's Daily Chores

Islam is not only a religion but it also is a complete code of conduct of one's life. It not only tells its followers how to pray to Allah and ask forgiveness from Him alone for one's sins, but also tells the Muslims how to live a life and attend to their daily chores.

Thus beside conveying the Godly commands to the fellow Muslims, the life of Prophet Muhammad (may peace be upon him) and His simple advices as to one has to attend to one's life individually and as a group so that peace and love oozes out all around and the world becomes a peaceful place to live. The Prophet not only advised to others to live a life in accordance with the instructions from Allah, but also lived a life a Himself which thus became a model for other Muslims to emulate and follow.

Herein under is a list of some Dos and Dont's the Prophet wanted Muslims to follow and adhere to.
  • Refrain from sleeping in between the dawn and after sunrise voluntary prayers, afternoon and sunset prayers and sunset and late night prayers.
  • Don’t sleep too much - it causes forgetfulness.
  • Don’t look at the sky while offering prayers.
  • Don’t be proud of yourself for pride and vanity leads to the downfall of a man.
  • Don’t boast of your knowledge or wealth and health - for Allah does not like those who are boastful.
  • Don’t look behind frequently while walking.
  • Don’t spit in the toilet.
  • Don’t clean your teeth with charcoal.
  • Don’t break tough things with your teeth.
  • Don’t look for faults of others.
  • Don’t speak in the toilet.
  • Don’t chase the beggars.
  • Don’t speak tales about your friends.
  • Don’t antagonize your friends.
  • Don’t be suspicious about your friends.
  • Don’t stamp your feet while walking.
  • Don’t break your knuckles.
  • Don’t speak lies.
  • Don’t decide on your own but do consult others who know.
Food is a blessing from Allah. Therefore one should be very thankful and be mindful of the following:
  • Don’t be show distaste of food or dislike a particular food.
  • Don’t smell the food while you eat.
  • Don’t blow on your food when it’s hot - however you may fan it.
  • Don’t eat and drink with your left hand.
  • Don’t eat the food that is taken out from your teeth.
  • Don’t eat in darkness.
  • Don’t eat mouth-full.
  • Don't eat to your full, leave one third of your hunger unsatisfied as a full stomach leads to many diseases and ills.
Here are some more guidelines for Muslims:
  • Avoid traveling alone.
  • Check your shoes before wearing it.
  • Treat your guests well with good heart.
  • Be patient when in poverty.
  • Assist a good cause.
  • Do good to those who do bad to you.
  • Be satisfied with what you have.
  • Speak clearly so others can understand.
  • Think of your faults and repent - in fact repent at least 100 times a day so that you may be forgiven.
Each one of the above advises are points to ponder upon - the wisdom behind each would automatically be raveled. Some are even self explanatory as checking one's shoes before wearing for some deadly insect or even a scorpion may have slipped inside and may harm you when you put your foot inside.

We will talk of some of the above in detail and the philosophy behind such guidelines in posts to follow.
