Salat al-Istikharah - a Prayer of seeking counsel from Allah

Life is full of challenges, most of the time requiring help from others. But many forget that the best help is the Divine help if properly sought from Allah. Generally, when confronted with a situation where one is faced with a difficult decision and is uncertain of taking a right decision.

While we always redress our grievances to Allah, there is a specific prayer, known as Salat al-Istikharah (صلاة الاستخارة) for making one's decision making easy by involving Allah in it. Istikharah simply translated means a Prayer of Seeking Counsel. Salat al-Istikharah is performed in two units of prayer or raka'ah followed by the supplication of Salat al-Istikharah.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to guide his companions and advise: 'If any one of you is concerned about a decision he has to make or wants to take an action then let him pray two units raka'ah of voluntary salah prayer.

What is to prayed in  Salat al-Istikhaara is mentioned in Sahi al-Bukhārī  (Book 19 - Prayer at Night (Tahajjud) /  كتاب التهجد / Chapter 28:  What is recited in the two Rak'a (Sunna) of the Fajr / باب مَا جَاءَ فِي التَّطَوُّعِ مَثْنَى مَثْنَى) as Hadith 1166, given herein under:

Narrated by Jabir bin `Abdullah:
The Prophet ﷺ used to teach us the way of doing Istikharah (Istikharah means to ask Allah to guide one to the right sort of action concerning any job or a deed), in all matters as he taught us the Surahs of the Qur'an. He said, "If anyone of you thinks of doing any job he should offer a two rak`at prayer other than the compulsory ones and say (after the prayer):

(O Allah! I ask guidance from Your knowledge, And Power from Your Might and I ask for Your great blessings. You are capable and I am not. You know and I do not and You know the unseen. O Allah! If You know that this job is good for my religion and my subsistence and in my Hereafter--(or said: If it is better for my present and later needs)--Then You ordain it for me and make it easy for me to get, And then bless me in it, and if You know that this job is harmful to me In my religion and subsistence and in the Hereafter--(or said: If it is worse for my present and later needs)--Then keep it away from me and let me be away from it. And ordain for me whatever is good for me, And make me satisfied with it). The Prophet (ﷺ) added that then the person should name (mention) his need.

Romanized Pronunciation:
"-- 'Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi'ilmika, Wa astaqdiruka bi-qudratika, Wa as'alaka min fadlika Al-`azlm Fa-innaka taqdiru Wala aqdiru, Wa ta'lamu Wala a'lamu, Wa anta 'allamu l-ghuyub. Allahumma, in kunta ta'lam anna hadha-lamra Khairun li fi dini wa ma'ashi wa'aqibati `Amri (or 'ajili `Amri wa'ajilihi) Faqdirhu wa yas-sirhu li thumma barik li Fihi, Wa in kunta ta'lamu anna hadha-lamra shar-run li fi dini wa ma'ashi wa'aqibati `Amri (or fi'ajili `Amri wa ajilihi) Fasrifhu anni was-rifni anhu. Waqdir li al-khaira haithu kana Thumma ardini bihi.'"

It may be mentioned that all communication between a servant and his Master, Allah Almighty, is always one to one with no intermediaries as is in the case of five obligatory prayers and Tahajjud prayer. Likewise Salat al-Istikharah too should be directly prayed by the one who is in need of Divine counseling.

However, in some Muslim countries, due to illiteracy of Muslims, professionals come into play and conduct Salat al-Istikharah on the behalf of a person needing ease in his decision making. And for this, they charge handsome money, which strictly against the spirit of seeking Divine counselling. Since majority of Muslims, despite being otherwise illiterate, can recite Qur'an, reading the supplication mentioned above should not be a problem. So let us offer our own Salat al-Istikharah of two cycles and then make the supplication as taught by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ mentioned above. May Allah ease our problems and help us take the right decisions. Ameen
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

Note: When we mention God in our posts, we mean One True God, we call Allah in Islam, with no associates. Allah is the Sole Creator of all things, and that Allah is all-powerful and all-knowing. Allah has no offspring, no race, no gender, no body, and is unaffected by the characteristics of human life.

What should a person supplicate after the Taslim (Supplication attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

Taslim (تسليم) is the concluding portion of the prayer (salat), where one recites السلام عليكم ورحمة الله As-salāmu ʿalaikum wa-raḥmatu-llah ("Peace and blessings of God be unto you") once while facing the right, and once while facing the left. Generally, many believers are in a hurry to get up and leave masjid or the prayer mat if praying at home. But Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would usually, after making the Taslim, sit at the same place and make a special supplication to bring an end to his salat covering a number of aspects that one would like to convey to his Creator, thanking Him for His blessings and seeking protection.

One such supplication is mentioned in Sunan Abi Dawud (Book # 8  Prayer (Kitab Al-Salat): Detailed Injunctions about Witr / كتاب  الوتر / Chapter # 511 What A Person Should Say When He Says The Taslim / باب مَا يَقُولُ الرَّجُلُ إِذَا سَلَّمَ as Hadith number # 1510, quoted herein under:

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas:

The Prophet (ﷺ) used to supplicate Allah: "My Lord, help me and do not give help against me; grant me victory, and do not grant victory over me; plan on my behalf and do not plan against me; guide me, and make my right guidance easy for me; grant me victory over those who act wrongfully towards me; O Allah, make me grateful to Thee, mindful of Thee, full of fear towards Thee, devoted to Thy obedience, humble before Thee, or penitent. My Lord, accept my repentance, wash away my sin, answer my supplication, clearly establish my evidence, guide my heart, make true my tongue and draw out malice in my breast."

Although a bit longer supplication, yet nothing could be wholesome than this. Let us start making this supplication, first by reading, and by and by one would remember it by heart, In Sha Allah.
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. Supplication to relieve pain (even from a sting of a scorpion) attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

The pain caused by the sting of insects and arachnids, like scorpions, bees, wasps, hornets, ants and likes is sometimes unbearable – sometimes these cause deaths too. While antidote may not be handily available, one can forestall such hazards by supplicating and invoking protection form Allah – and if one has true faith in Allah, one can be assured of Divine protection.

One such supplication attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is quoted in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: Book 49 The Book Pertaining To The Remembrance of Allah, Supplication, Repentance And Seeking Forgiveness - كتاب الذكر والدعاء والتوبة والاستغفار / Chapter Zikr E Ilahi, Dua, Tauba Aur Astaghfar / as Hadith number # 6880 as under:

Abu Huraira reported that a person came to Allah's Messenger ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم  ) and said: Allah's Messenger, I was stung by a scorpion during the night. Thereupon he said: Had you recited these words in the evening: I seek refuge in the Perfect Word of Allah from the evil of what He hath created, it would not have done any harm to you.

At another place, this supplication is derived from a hadith narrated by Khawla bint Hakim, who narrated:

I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) say: "Whoever stops at a place and says, 'I seek refuge in the Perfect Words of Allah from the evil of what He has created,' nothing will harm him until he moves from that place." (Sahih Muslim 2708)

Meaning of the supplication:
  • Seeking Refuge (A'udhu): The phrase "I seek refuge" indicates a plea for protection and safety. It shows the supplicant's recognition of their vulnerability and their trust in Allah as the ultimate protector.
  • In the Perfect Words of Allah (bikalimatillahi at-tammati)
    • "Perfect Words of Allah" refers to the Quran and Allah's divine commands, which are flawless, complete, and free from any deficiency. The words of Allah are considered the ultimate source of guidance, power, and protection.
    • This implies that by invoking Allah’s perfect words, the supplicant is seeking the most comprehensive and powerful form of protection.
  • From the Evil (min sharri)
    • "From the evil" encompasses all forms of harm, danger, and malevolence, whether they are physical, spiritual, visible, or hidden.
    • This part of the supplication highlights the recognition that evil exists and that humans need protection from its potential harms.
  • Of What He Has Created (ma khalaq):
    • This phrase acknowledges that Allah is the Creator of everything in existence. It includes seeking protection from all creatures, both animate and inanimate, that could potentially cause harm.
    • It also implies a belief that although Allah has created everything, some of His creations can pose a threat or harm, whether through intention or nature.
Significance in Islamic Practice
  • Protection and Safety: This supplication is commonly recited for protection against various forms of evil, including physical harm, spiritual dangers, and harmful entities.
  • Trust in Allah: By seeking refuge in Allah's words, the supplicant expresses their reliance on Allah's power and acknowledges that ultimate protection can only come from Him.
  • Usage in Daily Life: This supplication can be recited at any time, particularly when a person feels threatened or fears harm. It is also recommended to recite it when entering a new place, facing uncertain situations, or when feeling anxious or afraid.
The supplication "I seek refuge in the Perfect Words of Allah from the evil of what He has created" is a concise yet profound prayer that encapsulates a believer's reliance on Allah for protection from all forms of evil. By invoking Allah's perfect words, the supplicant seeks a divine shield against potential harms, demonstrating faith in Allah's supreme power and mercy. This supplication is a valuable part of a Muslim’s spiritual toolkit, offering reassurance and safety in the face of life's uncertainties and dangers.

It is a small supplication, easy to remember, yet it can relive one from the agony of pain if stung by any harmful insects or arachnids. It is better to recite this supplication much too often, especially if one is outdoors, camping or sleeping on bare earth to avoid chances of being stung by these harmful creatures. Special care should be taken against the family of arachnids which abound in the deserts.

A supplication that outweighs many other supplications

We Muslims are grateful to Allah for having had us into the fold of Islam. We should, therefore, all the time remembering Allah by using His attributes and thanking Him for the wonderful world He has created for man and supplied with abundant means of sustenance.

While we offer our obligatory prayers everyday as a means to remember Allah and continuously seek His forgiveness and protection, we should also remember Him much too often while we are not asleep. And when we go to sleep at night, we must thank Allah for having blessed a wonderful day and do the same when we get up early morning to offer Tahajjad and the pre-dawn prayer (Fajr).

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has taught us a four worded supplication, which is weightier than many other forms of supplications and worship. This supplication has been quoted in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (The Book (#48) Pertaining to the Remembrance of Allah, Supplication, Repentance and Seeking Forgiveness -كتاب الذكر والدعاء والتوبة والاستغفار  / Chapter # 19 The Tasbih at the Beginning of the Day and When Going to Sleep / باب التَّسْبِيحِ أَوَّلَ النَّهَارِ وَعِنْدَ النَّوْمِ ) as Hadith number # 2726 a:

Juwairiya reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) came out from (her apartment) in the morning as she was busy in observing her dawn

prayer in her place of worship. He came back in the forenoon and she was still sitting there. He (the Holy Prophet) said to her: You have been in the same seat since I left you. She said: Yes. Thereupon Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) said: I recited four words three times after I left you and if these are to be weighed against what you have recited since morning these would outweigh them and (these words) are:" Hallowed be Allah and praise is due to Him according to the number of His creation and according to the pleasure of His Self and according to the weight of His Throne and according to the ink (used in recording) words (for His Praise)."

This supplication recognizes the vastness of Allah's creation, His immense pleasure, the grandeur of His Throne, and the limitless scope of His words. Let's break down its components for a deeper understanding.

Meaning
  • Hallowed be Allah and praise is due to Him (Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi):
    • Subhanallah means "Glory be to Allah" or "Hallowed be Allah." It signifies declaring Allah's perfection and transcendence above any imperfection.
    • Wa bihamdihi means "and praise is due to Him." It signifies acknowledging and expressing gratitude for Allah’s bounties and blessings.
  • According to the number of His creation (‘adada khalqihi): This phrase acknowledges the vastness of Allah’s creation. It means praising Allah as much as the number of all things He has created, which are beyond human comprehension in their multitude.
  • According to the pleasure of His Self (wa rida nafsihi): This phrase reflects the desire to praise Allah in a manner that is most pleasing to Him. It signifies the aim to meet the highest standards of divine satisfaction and acceptance.
  • According to the weight of His Throne (wa zinata ‘arshihi): The Throne of Allah (Arsh) is described as immensely great and magnificent. Praising Allah according to the weight of His Throne signifies offering praise that matches the grandeur and majesty of Allah's supreme authority and dominion.
  • According to the ink (used in recording) words for His Praise (wa midada kalimatihi): This phrase refers to the infinite nature of Allah’s words and knowledge. The metaphor of ink used to write Allah’s words signifies endlessness and eternity. Praising Allah in this manner recognizes that His words, decrees, and knowledge are limitless.
Significance of the Supplication
  • Comprehensive Praise: This supplication is a comprehensive and profound way to praise Allah, covering various dimensions of His creation, pleasure, and majesty.
  • Spiritual Reflection: It encourages deep reflection on the vastness of Allah’s creation, His supreme authority, and the boundless nature of His words and knowledge.
  • Efficient and Powerful Dhikr: The Prophet (ﷺ) highlighted the immense value and weight of this supplication, indicating its effectiveness in gaining divine favor and spiritual reward.
The supplication is a powerful form of dhikr (remembrance of Allah) that encapsulates the vastness and grandeur of Allah's creation, pleasure, authority, and knowledge. It serves as a reminder of the infinite ways in which Allah can be praised and glorified, encouraging believers to engage in comprehensive and heartfelt worship.

We should try to remember by heart the Prophetic Supplications by heart and recite these as much as we can for the wordings are so beautifully composed none other than the last Prophet of Allah, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

What to supplicate when mounting an animal or any means of transportation (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

Embarking upon a journey is an act which entail many a unforeseen hurdles and events. Therefore, when embarking upon any means of transportation, one must ask help from Allah for a safe journey and return. Awhile ago, we shared a supplication mentioned in the the 13th verse Surah 43. Az-Zukhruf of Qur'an for embarking upon a journey:

لِتَسۡتَوٗا عَلٰى ظُهُوۡرِهٖ ثُمَّ تَذۡكُرُوۡا نِعۡمَةَ رَبِّكُمۡ اِذَا اسۡتَوَيۡتُمۡ عَلَيۡهِ وَتَقُوۡلُوۡا سُبۡحٰنَ الَّذِىۡ سَخَّرَ لَنَا هٰذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهٗ مُقۡرِنِيۡنَۙ‏
(43:13) so that when you are mounted upon them you may remember the bounty of your Lord, and say: “Glory be to Him Who has subjected this to Us whereas we did not have the strength to subdue it."

Today we share a supplication attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ which he used to make when mounting an animal. This Hadith is mentioned Jami` at-Tirmidhi  (48 -  Chapters on Supplication / كتاب الدعوات عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم / Chapter # 46 What Has Been Related About What One Says When Riding An Animal / باب مَا يَقُولُ إِذَا رَكِبَ النَّاقَةَ  ) as Hadith number # 3446:

Ali bin Rabi’ah said:
“I witnessed Ali having an animal brought to him to ride. When he placed his foot in the stirrup he said: ‘In the Name of Allah,’ (Bismillāh) [three times]. So then, once he had ascended upon its back, he said: ‘All praise is due to Allah.’ (Al-ḥamdulillāh) then he said: Glory is to Him Who has subjected this to us, and we were not able to do it. And, surely, to our Lord are we returning (Subḥān alladhī sakh-khara lanā hādhā wa mā kunnā lahū muqrinīn. Wa innā ilā rabbinā lamunqalibūn). Then he said: ‘All praise is due to Allah (Al-ḥamdulillāh)’ – three times – and ‘Allah is the Greatest (Allāhu Akbar)’ – three times – ‘Glory is to You, indeed I have wronged myself, so forgive me, for indeed none forgives sins except You (Subḥānaka innī qad ẓalamtu nafsī faghfirlī fa-innahū lā yaghfirudh-dhunūba illā ant).’ Then he laughed. So I said: ‘O Commander of the Believer! What caused you to laugh?’ He said: ‘I saw the Messenger of Allah do as I did, then he (ﷺ) laughed, so I said, ‘What cause you to laugh?’ Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘Indeed, your Lord is very pleased with His worshipper when he says: “O my Lord, forgive me my sins, indeed, no one other than You forgives sins.

GradeSahih (Darussalam)

This is a very useful supplication which we must make too when mounting on an animal or any means of transportation, for it is the help of Allah alone which can make our journey safe, free of any hazards, and bring us back in safety too.

This supplication reminds man that God has placed him in charge of the earth, putting at his disposal its considerable and varied power and potential. It also invites man to show gratitude for God's choice and blessings, reminds him of the One who grants blessings every time such a blessing is enjoyed. Such expressions of gratitude for God's blessings is sure to keep our hearts alive to their bond with God at every turn in life: "So that when you are seated on their backs you remember your Lord's blessings and say: 'Limitless in His glory is He who has made all this subservient to our use. We could not have done it by ourselves." [Qur'an Wiki - in explanation of Qur'anic verse mentioned in the beginning of the post. Since both the verse from Qur'an and the Hadith mentioned in this post carry the same theme, it has been mentioned here.]

While making the above mentioned supplication, one must also seek forgiveness for all sins and invoke the blessings and mercy of Allah. And the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "Indeed, your Lord is very pleased with His worshipper when he says: “O my Lord, forgive me my sins, indeed, no one other than You forgives sins."

A Supplication for forgiveness repeated 100 times by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Whenever we need to make a request to our company head or a superior, we rehearsed chosen words several times so that what ever we speak, every words is expressive of our earnest desire for request be accepted. In fact, it is the words that always matter. Carefully chosen words can eve melt a stubborn and least responsive boss.

Likewise, we should carefully select words when making a supplication to our Creator, the Lord of the universe. Some may ask why? The answer is that no one likes a ill worded request which really cannot be understood. Therefore, when we ask forgiveness from Allah, we should phrase our supplication in a way that not only we we put across our request for pardoning, but also we appreciate our Lord that He alone is the pardoner and no one else.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would often make supplications in the presence of others so that they should remember the well worded supplications for nothing could be better phrased by the revered Prophet of Allah.

This supplication is mentioned in Sunan Abi Dawud (Book # 8  Prayer (Kitab Al-Salat): Detailed Injunctions about Witr / كتاب  الاستسقاء / Chapter # 512 About Seeking Forgiveness / باب فِي الاِسْتِغْفَارِ
as Hadith number # 1515, quoted herein under:

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar:

We counted that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would say a hundred times during a meeting: "My Lord, forgive me and pardon me; Thou art the Pardoning and forgiving One".

Prophetic Supplication for protection against Dangerous Diseases (Supplication Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

Everyone wishes to be healthy and hearty. Yet, the menace of diseases, specially the generally incurable dangerous diseases is vast spreading. The threat of AIDS, cancer, MS and many other diseases for which a credible medicine or antidote has yet to be found. We see our people around us succumbing to these deadly and dangerous disease at the hands of helpless of science of medicine and even the best doctors in the field.

We also know that these diseases strike us as a test by Allah to see who remains steadfast despite the suffering from the dangerous ailment. Remember Prophet Ayūb "أيوب" (Job, may peace be upon him) fell ill to an extent that his whole body was covered with  painful boils throughout his entire body. Yet despite the extreme pain and discomfort and painful ordeal and at a very later stage of his life, some say he was seventy years of age, the revered prophet displayed an extreme sense of faith and patience and never stopped invoking the mercy of his Lord.

And [mention] Job, when he called to his Lord, "Indeed, adversity has touched me, and you are the Most Merciful of the merciful." — Quran, Surah 21 (The Prophets), Ayah 83

It is said that after many years of suffering, God ordered Job to "Strike with thy foot!".[6] At once, Job struck the ground with his foot and God caused a cool spring of water to gush forth from the Earth, from which Job could replenish himself. The Quran states that it was then that God removed his pain and suffering.

I am personal witness to a brother who lost his eyesight. But he never left his faith and trust in Allah and continue to supplicate for almost five years when miraculously his eyesight was restored by the will of Allah

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is said to have taught a supplication to his companions for refuge against deadly diseases. This supplication is mentioned in Sunan Abi Dawud (Book # 8  Prayer (Kitab Al-Salat): Detailed Injunctions about Witr / كتاب  الوتر / Chapter # 518 Regarding Seeking Refuge / باب  فِي الاِسْتِعَاذَةِ as Hadith number # 1554, quoted herein under:

Narrated  by Anas ibn Malik: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to say: "O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from leprosy, madness, elephantiasis, and evil diseases."

Grade: Sahih (Al-Albani)

Remember, every person is faced with trials and tribulations at one point or another in their lives. It is patience that helps the believer cope. When calamity befalls a patient believer, it does not crush him. Instead, the believer endures, persists, and has hope in the mercy of Allah and the rewards that are awaiting him on the Day of Judgment.

We too therefore remain steadfast in all tests and tribulations of our lives and make it a habit of repeating the afore mentioned supplication to seek protection from the listed and even otherwise dangerous and incurable diseases that have emerged rather lately.
Prophetic Supplication (attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) for Rain

All living creatures and plantation need water to survive. The lands become dry and parched if sufficient if not sufficiently watered. For lands to be "living" and alive, sufficient rains must fall to provide fresh water for the barren lands to be productive and living creatures to survive. The need for rains is far more for areas that are no reservoirs of waters like lakes or aquifers or running rivers and streams.

Sometimes it so happens that due to less or no rains, the once fertile lands get dried and living becomes difficult and ultimately extinct. That is why all older civilizations thrived around the banks of rivers and once rivers changed courses or sufficient rains did not fall, people slowly and gradually shifted to other places, leaving behind the tales of their sustenance.

In such hard times, we must bow to Allah and invoke His mercy to shower on us rains so as us to live. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is said to have supplicated for people who had been suffering from less or no rains. And Allah did honour His prophet and Allah honoured His prophet's supplication and it rained.

This Hadith is mentioned in Sunan Abi Dawud (Book # 3  Of The Prayer For Rain (Kitab al-Istisqa') / كتاب  الاستسقاء / Chapter # 3 Raising The Hands During Istisqa' / باب رَفْعِ الْيَدَيْنِ فِي الاِسْتِسْقَاءِ as Hadith number # 1169, quoted herein under:

Narrated Jabir ibn Abdullah:
The people came to the Prophet (ﷺ) weeping (due to drought). He said (making supplication): O Allah! give us rain which will replenish us, abundant, fertilizing and profitable, not injurious, granting it now without delay. He (the narrator) said: Thereupon the sky became overcast.

Grade: Sahih (Al-Albani)

This supplication is often read in prayers specially organized for the rains, called Salaat al-istisqa'. Istisqa' prayer is a means of seeking rain from Allah, Exalted be He, during times of drought. The Salaat al-istisqa' includes two cycles / rakah and is prayed in times other than for the time of the obligatory prayers.
