Surah Al-Furqān 25:45 explains the deeper meaning of the moving shadow as a sign

The Qur’an is, above all, guidance for all mankind—showing humanity how to know its Creator, distinguish truth from falsehood, and live with faith, justice, mercy and responsibility. Yet its guidance is not exhausted by a superficial reading. Again and again, the Qur’an invites people to reflect, ponder and use reason. For those who approach its verses thoughtfully, its words unfold layers of divine wisdom about human nature, morality, history, creation and the purpose of life. Thus, the Qur’an is not merely a book to be recited; it is a book to be understood, contemplated and lived, with deeper reflection continually revealing lessons that shape both the mind and the heart.

For those seeking deeper meaning of Divine wisdom, Surah Al-Furqān 25:45 draws their attention to the simple but profound phenomenon of the moving shadow as a sign of Allah’s power and order in creation. The shadow lengthens, shortens, and changes direction according to the Sun, showing that even ordinary natural events follow precise laws and patterns. The verse invites us not merely to see nature, but to reflect on it: what seems commonplace is actually part of a finely ordered universe. Scientifically, the changing shadow corresponds to the Sun’s apparent movement across the sky due to Earth’s rotation, but the verse’s deeper purpose is spiritual—to awaken wonder, observation, humility, and recognition of the Creator behind the order of creation.

Let us try to explain the wisdom behind this single verse which could be understood more with a scientific mind or are the students of physics or are those lucky ones who try to reflect deeply on every verse of Qur'an to ponder over Divine wisdom.

THE QUR'AN SAYS

Actual verse (Surah Al-Furqān 25:45). The verse says:

أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ كَيْفَ مَدَّ ٱلظِّلَّ وَلَوْ شَآءَ لَجَعَلَهُۥ سَاكِنًا ثُمَّ جَعَلْنَا ٱلشَّمْسَ عَلَيْهِ دَلِيلًا

“Have you not seen how your Lord extends the shadow? Had He willed, He could have made it stationary. Then We made the sun its guide.” — Al-Furqān 25:45

This verse becomes even clearer when read with the next verse:

ثُمَّ قَبَضْنَاهُ إِلَيْنَا قَبْضًا يَسِيرًا “Then We withdraw it towards Us, a gradual withdrawal.” — 25:46

The Qur’an is asking us to stop before an everyday phenomenon most people scarcely notice: a shadow is never random. Its position, direction and length are governed by the position of the Sun.

What does the verse mean? - CLASSICAL TAFSIR

Classical commentators understood the verse primarily as a sign of Allah's creative power and ordering of nature, rather than as a technical astronomy lesson. Ibn Kathīr records the explanation of Ibn Abbas and several early authorities that the “extended shadow” particularly refers to the broad shade between dawn and sunrise. As sunlight rises, that shade is progressively withdrawn. He explains “We made the sun its guide” to mean that the Sun reveals and determines the shadow: the phenomenon becomes perceptible through the contrast between light and shade.

This is part of a larger sequence in 25:45–49 where the Qur’an directs attention away from argument and toward observable creation: shadow and sunlight, night and sleep, day and activity, winds, clouds and life-giving rain. The argument is essentially:

The Striking Scientific relevance

Look carefully at the ordinary world. Its regularity itself is extraordinary. Modern physics and astronomy explain precisely why a shadow behaves as the verse describes.

• A shadow is determined by three things: light source → obstructing object → receiving surface.
• With the Sun as the light source, the direction and length of a terrestrial shadow depend directly on the Sun's apparent position in the sky.
• If a vertical object has height h, and the Sun's elevation above the horizon is α, its approximate shadow length is: L=h/tan(α)
• So:
• when the Sun is low, the shadow is long;
• as the Sun rises, the shadow gradually shortens;
• near local solar noon it reaches its daily minimum;
• as the Sun descends, the shadow lengthens again.
• This makes the expression: “We made the Sun its guide”
• Remarkably apt from an observational standpoint. Knowing the Sun's position tells you where the shadow will be; observing the shadow can conversely tell you something about the Sun's position.
• That principle is exactly what underlies a sundial.

But what makes the shadow move?

The Sun appears to travel across the sky from east to west. Modern astronomy tells us that this daily apparent movement results mainly from Earth rotating on its axis. NASA describes Earth's rotation as producing the approximately 24-hour solar day and explains that the Sun's changing position in our sky is related to Earth's rotation, revolution and axial tilt.

Therefore there is a beautiful chain:

Earth rotates

↓

Sun's apparent position changes

↓

angle of sunlight changes

↓

shadow changes direction and length

↓

shadow is gradually extended and withdrawn

That is exactly the kind of observable phenomenon 25:45–46 asks the reader to contemplate.

Does “If He willed, He could have made it stationary” refer to Earth's rotation?

This requires some care. 

• It is tempting to say, “The Qur’an is explicitly talking about Earth's rotation.” That goes further than the text itself.
• Classical scholars did not interpret the verse as a technical declaration that Earth rotates. They understood سَاكِنًا — sākinan as fixed, unmoving or permanent: Allah could have made the condition of shade remain unchanged.

Modern astronomy helps us understand one physical mechanism responsible for changing shadows—Earth's rotation—but the Qur’an does not explicitly say here, “Earth rotates.” 

So the stronger and more intellectually responsible formulation is:

The verse is fully compatible with the astronomical mechanism discovered through science, while its primary purpose is theological and reflective rather than to teach celestial mechanics.

That distinction is important when discussing the Qur’an with scientifically minded non-Muslims.

There is another fascinating scientific detail

The shadow does not suddenly jump from long to short. Rather, its position changes continuously and progressively.

Verse 46 says: قَبْضًا يَسِيرًا — qabḍan yasīrā meaning approximately a gentle/gradual withdrawal.

Ibn Kathīr cites the early explanation “little by little.” That is exactly what observation shows. Because Earth's rotation is continuous, the Sun's apparent angular position changes continuously and consequently the geometry of the shadow changes continuously.

NASA similarly explains that Earth's rotation causes the Sun's daily apparent movement across the sky.

Shadows also allowed humans to measure the world

This simple phenomenon became extraordinarily important scientifically. By studying the Sun and shadows, humans learned to determine:

• time of day, through sundials;
• direction, including the solar meridian;
• solar altitude, from shadow length;
• seasonal changes, from changing solar paths;
• and even aspects of Earth's geometry.

So when the Qur’an says: “We made the Sun a guide to it” there is a profound observational truth embedded in that wording: a shadow contains information about its source of illumination.

A deeper reflection

There is something beautiful about Allah choosing a shadow as an āyah (sign). A shadow has no independent existence. It changes because something greater than itself—the source of light—changes its relationship to it.

We usually notice the Sun. But the Qur’an asks us to notice what the Sun does.

Morning comes. Shadows stretch enormously across the ground. They shrink almost imperceptibly. At noon they gather close to objects. In the afternoon they begin extending in the opposite direction.

And this happens every day with mathematical regularity while most human beings walk through it without thinking. That is precisely the Qur’anic method of awakening consciousness: أَلَمْ تَرَ — “Have you not seen?”

The phenomenon was always before your eyes. The Qur’an simply asks you to look again.

The scientific lesson and spiritual lesson meet

Science answers: How does the shadow move? Earth rotates; the Sun's apparent altitude and azimuth change; therefore the direction and length of shadows change predictably.

The Qur’an asks a different question: Why do you pass through such an exquisitely ordered world without reflecting upon the One who established its order?

Thus I would summarize 25:45–46 as:

The moving shadow is not presented as a scientific miracle to replace astronomy; it is presented as an invitation to astronomy-like observation. Look carefully at a familiar phenomenon, discover the extraordinary order behind it, and allow knowledge of creation to lead you toward reflection upon the Creator.

This makes Al-Furqān 25:45–46 particularly valuable when speaking with a scientifically minded non-Muslim: the Qur’an is not asking the person to stop questioning nature, but to begin observing it more deeply. Although Qur'an is not a science book, yet it leave footprints that science later discovered to be true and relevant to our times. This is the Divine wisdom many of us are unaware of.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. Qur'an, Creation and Modern Science: Every living being made out of water

Al-Qurʾān, the Gospel like Psalms, Torah and the Gospel, is Divine Scripture for the guidance of man. Yet those who do not believe in Al-Qurʾān and Islam, often try to question the validity of Al-Qurʾān and want to correlate it with scientific discoveries in order to accept it as a Divine Scripture. Although, no one has ever questioned the other three former Scriptures nor ever tried to pitch these against the science, they are always trying to shoot down Al-Qurʾān for not being validated by science.

Although, this comparison is simply absurd and illogical for Divine Scriptures are meant for guidance and not being text books of science, yet Al-Qurʾān contains many a mentions which has only been validated by science more than centuries after its revelation. We have already mentioned many verses from Al-Qurʾān which have been shared in our reference page: Divine Revelations in Qur'an validated by Scientific Discoveries. Today we share two scientific discoveries mentioned in one verse of Al-Qurʾān, mentioned in the 30th verse of Surah 21.Al-Anbiyaa given herein under:

اَوَلَمۡ يَرَ الَّذِيۡنَ كَفَرُوۡۤا اَنَّ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالۡاَرۡضَ كَانَـتَا رَتۡقًا فَفَتَقۡنٰهُمَا​ ؕ وَجَعَلۡنَا مِنَ الۡمَآءِ كُلَّ شَىۡءٍ حَىٍّ​ ؕ اَفَلَا يُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ‏ 

(21:30) Did the unbelievers (who do not accept the teaching of the Prophet) not realize that the heavens and the earth were one solid mass, then We tore them apart, and We made every living being out of water? Will they, then, not believe (that We created all this)?

From the wording of the text, it appears that at first the whole universe was a single mass of matter; then it was split into different parts and the earth and the other heavenly bodies were formed and that Allah made water the cause and origin of life. 

Explanation

This verse contains two major cosmic statements:

• The heavens and earth were once joined, then separated.
• All living things were made from water.
• Let’s examine both in light of modern scientific discovery.

 “The heavens and the earth were joined together, then We separated them”

The Arabic Key Words in this verse are:

• Ratqan (رَتْقًا) something that is fused, closed up, joined together
• Fataqnāhumā (فَفَتَقْنَاهُمَا) means We split them apart, tore them asunder

Let us find out the modern day scientific Perspective of these two key words:

• The Big Bang Theory
• According to modern cosmology: The universe began about 13.8 billion years ago and that all matter, energy, space, and time were compressed into a single unified state. Then a massive expansion occurred — known as the Big Bang. And the universe has been expanding ever since.
• This theory was supported by:
• Edwin Hubble (discovery of expanding universe)
• Detection of Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation
• Mathematical models from general relativity
• The idea that the heavens and earth were once a single joined entity aligns conceptually with the modern understanding of a unified early cosmos.
• Important note: 
• The Qur’an is not a physics textbook. It speaks in accessible language — but its description remarkably corresponds to later scientific discoveries.
• The Qur’ān may refer to some universal facts, like the one stated here: “The heaven and the earth were once one single entity, which We then parted asunder.” We accept this as an absolute certainty simply because it is stated in the Qur’ān. We certainly do not know how the heavens and the earth were parted, or ripped one from the other. We accept astronomical theories which are not in conflict with this general fact mentioned in the Qur’ān. What we will not do however is take up the Qur’ānic text and try to fit it to any astronomical theory. We do not seek an endorsement of the Qur’ān through human theories, because the Qur’ān states only what is certain. The most we can say is that the astronomical theory accepted today is not in conflict with the general import of this Qur’ānic statement revealed many generations prior to it.
• “We made from water every living thing”
• This short sentence states a great and crucial fact. Indeed, scientists shower praise on Darwin for having identified that water was the first environment where life began. It is indeed a fact that should capture all our attentions. That it is mentioned in the Qur’ān neither fills us with wonder nor increases our belief in the truth of the Qur’ān. Our belief in the absolute truth of everything it states is based on our unshakeable belief that it is God’s revelation, not on its being confirmed by scientific discoveries or theories. The most that can be said here is that on this particular point, Darwin’s evolutionary theory is not in conflict with what the Qur’ān states.
• Modern Biological Research describes the Composition of Living Organisms of Human body being 60–70% water. The cells in human body require water for: Metabolism, DNA stability, Protein folding and Nutrient transport. That is Water is not just supportive — it is structurally essential.
• Origin of Life in Water
• The dominant scientific view is that (1) Life began in the ancient oceans, (2) Early biochemical reactions occurred in aqueous environments
• The first cells were aquatic microorganisms.
• Astrobiology today operates on one principle: Where there is water, there may be life.
• That is why scientists search for water on Mars, Europa (moon of Jupiter), and Enceladus (moon of Saturn).

Deeper Reflection

This verse connects:

• Cosmic Origin: Physical separation and Biological Origin: Life began in water
• Cosmic Origin: Universe began unified and Biological Origin: Biological emergence
• Cosmic Origin: Cosmic expansion and Biological Origin: Organic development

It ends with: “Will they not then believe?” - That is this verse invites reflection, not blind acceptance.

Important Balance

Scholars caution that Al Qur’an is primarily a book of guidance, not science. It speaks in universal language understandable across centuries. Thus while scientific discoveries may deepen appreciation, yet faith is not dependent solely on scientific confirmation.

Why This Is Remarkable

One last word of explanation: This verse was revealed in the 7th-century Arabia when there was no telescopes or microscopes and no cosmological mathematics. Yet the Qur’an speaks of a unified cosmic origin and life emerging from water. These are discoveries confirmed more than a millennium later.

This how our Creator shows us the immense depth of His wisdom which man has only recently has started to understand. Yet man a atheists still not believe as did the polytheists of Makkah when Al Qur’an was revelated. They did not believe then and the atheists still do not. That is why this verse ends with “Will they not then believe?” - That is this verse invites reflection, not blind acceptance.

For fourteen centuries, the Qur’ān has drawn the attention of unbelievers to the great marvels God has placed in the universe, wondering how they could deny what they see everywhere: “Will they not, then, believe?” How could they persist in their disbelief when everything around them in this universe inevitably leads to faith in God, the Creator, the Wise who conducts all affairs?

Qur'an, Creation and Modern Science: Why does Allah make a special mention of finger tips in Al Qur'an

Many non Muslims mock Qur'an, the fourth and the final Divine Scripture, to be a book written by Islamic Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم). And a lot of arguments have been presented to press upon others the "basis" of their accusation. Unfortunately, many such critics of Al Qur'an have never tried to view Qur'an with an open and rationale mind. Because only an unbiased researcher can find the wisdom contained in each word of Qur'an, which even the people of Arabia of more than 1400 years ago in particular, and religious scholars of other religion could decipher. In fact it was very late in the 18th-19th centuries that men of wisdom started to understand some, if not all, of the Divine wisdom of Qur'an.

Today, in this post of our, we will present the fourth verse from Surah 75. Al-Qiyamat (The Resurrection) and try to understand "Why does Allah make a special mention of finger tips" specially with regard to the Day of Resurrection. 

The Verse:

بَلَىٰ قَادِرِينَ عَلَىٰ أَن نُّسَوِّيَ بَنَانَهُ

“Yes indeed! We are able to restore even his very fingertips.”

Let’s unpack why “finger-tips (banānah)” are specifically mentioned — both theologically and scientifically — and how classical and modern scholars have understood this verse.

Context of the Verse

This verse comes in the passage (75:1–6) that addresses those who deny resurrection and mock the idea that humans can be re-created after death:

“Does man think We will not assemble his bones? Yes indeed! We are able to restore even his very fingertips.”

So the verse is a response to skeptics — those who thought that once a person’s bones had decayed, resurrection was impossible.

Meaning of “banānah” (بَنَانَ)

Arabic linguists like Ibn Fāris and Al-Rāghib al-Asfahānī define banān as: “The tips of fingers — the ends of the hands where the prints are.”

This refers to the fine extremities of the hand, the most detailed, delicate, and distinctive parts of the body.

Classical Tafsīr explanations

• Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr: Ibn Kathīr highlights precision — that if Allah can reproduce the most minute and unique part of you, then reassembling the rest of your body is even easier.
• Tafsīr al-Ṭabarī: So, it’s a symbol of divine precision — God won’t just re-create your body vaguely, but exactly as it was, even in the smallest particulars.
• Al-Rāzī (Mafātīḥ al-Ghayb):  Al-Rāzī explains that: “The fingers and their tips are among the most subtle and complex parts of the human body, used in writing, craftsmanship, and distinction. Mentioning them is to show that Allah’s power covers even the most intricate details.”

As can be seen that from the 14th century exegetes to later centuries, the Muslims scholars too started to refine their findings about this verse and uniqueness of the very thin lines engraved on the finger tips of every human being.

Scientific dimension (Modern reflection)

Though the Qur’an is not a science book, many modern scholars see a remarkable harmony here with modern discovery of fingerprints:

• Every fingertip has a unique pattern
• In 1823 -  Jan Purkinje, a Czech physiologist and professor of anatomy at the University of Breslau, published a thesis discussing nine fingerprint patterns.
• In 1858 – William Herschel, alluded to the fact that fingerprints are different from one person to another. This makes the fingerprint an exclusive characteristic of each person. 
• Science finally came to know of this hidden wisdom of Qur'an and concluded that Fingerprints are unique to each individual — even identical twins differ. And that these remain unchanged throughout life.

Hence, when Allah says: 

“We are able to restore even his fingertips,” it may allude to Recreating a person’s exact identity — down to their unique fingerprint.

This was unknown to humankind at the time of the revelation of Al Qur'an on Prophet Muhammad ﷺ which is a subtle reflection of Divine omniscience.

• Symbolic significance: Fingertips symbolize individuality and identity.

So, Allah is saying: “Do you think We cannot reassemble you? We can even reconstruct the tiny lines that distinguish you from all others.”

Thus, the verse emphasizes: (1) Perfect precision in resurrection, and (2) Individual accountability — you will rise as you, not someone else.

Broader Qur’anic consistency

The recreation and resurrection of man is not limited to this verse alone. There are other verses in other that reinforce this:

• “Does man think We shall not assemble his bones?” (75:3)
• “He will call them, and they will answer Him with praise.” (17:52)
• “He who created them the first time will bring them back.” (36:79)

So, Qur’an 75:4 is not isolated — it complements the broader Qur’anic assertion that resurrection is both logical and within Allah’s power.

Spiritual and moral message

• For the believer: It deepens faith in Allah’s absolute knowledge and creative power.
• For the denier: It removes all excuses — you will return exactly as you were.
• For all humans: It reminds us that every detail of our being — and every deed — is recorded and known to Allah.

Thus, through His revelations, Allah mentions the finger-tips to highlight His perfect creative precision —  that even the most minute, individual, and unique detail of every human being will be recreated exactly as before on the Day of Resurrection.

In fact the mention of fingertips to demonstrate Allah's omnipotence and ability to perfectly recreate every part of a human body, including the most intricate and unique details, to challenge the disbelief of those who doubt resurrection. This verse also serves as a testament to Allah's infinite knowledge and power, as modern science has recognized that each person's fingerprints are unique identifiers. 

This verse has been shared to apprise the Divine Wisdom to rejecters of Qur'an as a Divine Scripture and show them how Divine Wisdom came to be deciphered  some 11-12 centuries after the revelation of Qur'an. Only an arrogant and stubborn would still hold on to his accusation after reading this single verse from Qur'an. This is not the only verse that shuns any notion of Qur'an being man written.

Mathematical correlation in Qur'an baffle those who claim that Qur'an has been written by man

Ever since the advent of Islam and revelation of Qur'an on the last of the prophets, Muhammad ﷺ, Qur'an and its contents have been debated, contested or even claimed that it is a man written document borrowing information from the earlier Divine scriptures. At the time of its revelation, the pagan of Makkah were very good at poetry and they dismissed Muhammad ﷺ being a poet and Qur'an as his collection of poetic thoughts. 

Even at that time, to rebut the rejecters of Qur'an, Allah asked them to produce one single verse like that of Qur'an or even near to it and despite their best efforts the pagan poets and intellectual could not do so. The question thus arises why is it not humanly possible to replicate Qur'an. The plain answer is that Qur'an is a well packed document where each verse perfectly fits into its place and interconnects it to other verses, same as mathematical complexities are bounded together.

And it is for this reason that men of wisdom, intellect and critical thinking have started to understand the mathematical correlation between verses of Qur'an, the numerical indicators that perfectly match the scientific knowledge of day, something that was amiss at the time of revelation of Qur'an. 

It is for this reason that Qur'an is revered as the word of Allah by Muslims, and its authenticity and miraculous nature are fundamental aspects of Islamic belief. While mathematics or scientific methods cannot "prove" religious truths in a direct, empirical way, there are aspects of the Quran that many scholars, both Muslim and non-Muslim, have pointed to as signs of its divine origin, including some aspects that appear to be linked to mathematical structures. 

Here are some ways in which mathematics is thought to be associated with the Quran:

Numerical Patterns in the Quran

• The Frequency of Certain Words: Some scholars have observed that certain words in the Quran appear in specific frequencies that may hold mathematical significance. For instance, the word "day" ("yawm") appears 365 times in various forms, which some scholars suggest could be a symbolic reflection of the number of days in a year. Similarly, the word "month" ("shahr") appears 12 times, which correlates with the number of months in a year.
• The Use of the Number 7: The number 7 appears frequently in the Quran. There are seven heavens (Quran 67:3), seven days of the week, seven verses in the opening chapter (Al-Fatiha), and seven circumambulations around the Ka'bah during Hajj. This recurrent usage of 7 could be seen as a reflection of a divine mathematical structure.

The Mathematical Miracle of the Quran's Structure

• Symmetry in the Quranic Text: One of the key mathematical features often pointed out is the symmetry between the number of times certain phrases or concepts appear. For example:
• The word "believers" ("mu’minun") appears 79 times in the Quran, and the word "disbelievers" ("kafirun") also appears 79 times.
• The word "angel" ("mala'ika") appears 88 times, and the word "devil" ("shayatin") also appears 88 times.
• Such symmetry is seen by many as an indication of the divine organization of the Quranic text.

The Mathematical Concept of Miraculous Numerical Structure

• The Number 19: One of the most well-known mathematical patterns discussed by some scholars is the number 19. The Quran’s chapter (Surah) 74 is called Al-Muddathir and contains 56 verses, but it is particularly significant because many Muslims have pointed to a series of mathematical properties of the number 19:
• Bismillah: The phrase “Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim” ("In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful") appears 114 times in the Quran, and when divided by 19, the number of occurrences of this phrase has specific mathematical significance.
• Scholars such as Rashad Khalifa have explored the idea that the number 19 plays a key role in the Quran’s structure, as the Quran’s length, the repetition of certain phrases, and the arrangement of verses are said to correspond to multiples of 19 in various ways.

Mathematical Coding and the Quranic Text

• Gematria (Abjad Numerology): This ancient Arabic numerical system, similar to Hebrew gematria, assigns numerical values to Arabic letters. When words are analyzed based on this system, some claim to find a mathematical structure or hidden codes within the Quran. For example, the numerical value of the word "Quran" (in Arabic: القرآن) can be explored and compared to other related words, revealing numerical relationships that some interpret as evidence of divine design.
• The Abjad System: The Abjad system, in which each Arabic letter has a specific numerical value, is sometimes used to draw connections between words or verses based on their numerical values. Some see patterns when words with the same numerical values appear in related contexts.

The Fibonacci Sequence and Quranic Verses: The Fibonacci sequence is a series of numbers where each number is the sum of the two preceding ones (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, etc.). Some proponents suggest that certain structures in the Quran's verses, surah lengths, and even word frequencies may correspond to Fibonacci numbers. However, these claims are often debated and may not always hold up under rigorous mathematical scrutiny.

The Concept of Equilibrium: The Quran reflects a deep sense of balance and equilibrium in nature and creation, which can be linked to mathematical principles. For example, in Surah Ar-Rahman (55:7), Allah mentions that He "has raised the sky and established the balance (mizan)," referring to a divine order in nature that is in harmony, which resonates with the laws of physics, chemistry, and mathematics that govern the universe.

Cosmic Order and Mathematical Laws

• The Quran speaks of the creation of the universe, the balance in nature, the movement of celestial bodies, and the mathematical precision of the natural world. In Surah Al-Anbiya (21:33), it states: "It is He who created the night and the day, and the sun and the moon, each floating in an orbit." This aligns with modern scientific understanding of celestial mechanics, which relies heavily on mathematics.
• Order in Creation: Numerous references in the Quran (such as in Surah Al-Mulk, 67:3) talk about the perfection of the created world, which can be interpreted as a reference to the mathematical order present in nature.

The Uniqueness of the Quran’s Linguistic Structure: The Arabic language of the Quran is unique in its structure and rhythm, with some experts suggesting that it contains linguistic and mathematical patterns that enhance the poetic and rhetorical beauty of the text. The balance and rhythm of verses (known as Saj') also point to an underlying structure that some link to mathematical principles of harmony and proportion.

Limitations of Mathematical Proofs

While these numerical patterns and structures are intriguing, it's important to note that mathematics alone cannot serve as definitive proof of the Quran's divine origin. Mathematical patterns may point to a higher level of order or design, but the ultimate proof of the Quran’s truthfulness lies in its theological and spiritual messages, the consistency of its teachings, and the profound impact it has had on the lives of millions of people for over 1,400 years.

The Isra (Night Journey) and The Miraj (Ascension to the Heavens) of Prophet Muhammad in the light of modern science

The entire universe is a stroke of Divine miracle to which science has yet to conclude a unanimous framework. And science may never know how was the universe created and how big it really is. Why, because these are Divine miracles which can not be explained by scientific discoveries and research so far developed till date. Yet, humans due their inborn curiosity continue to question these miracles to reach closer to the why to such creations and happenings.

The Isra and Miraj, two miraculous events in Islamic tradition that occurred during the life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, are profound and often discussed from a spiritual, theological, and historical perspective. The events are described in the Qur'an and Hadith. However, many people attempt to understand these events in light of modern scientific knowledge, though it is important to recognize that these events are of a miraculous nature, beyond the natural laws we understand today.

Before we proceed with a possible answer in the light of scientific knowledge of today, let us briefly explain what really is the Night Journey and Ascension to the Heaves by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ:

• The Isra refers to the journey of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from the Kaaba in Mecca to the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem in a single night. The Qur'an mentions this event in Surah Al-Isra (17:1): "Glory be to the One who took His servant on a journey by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque, whose surroundings We have blessed..."
• The Miraj describes the Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) ascent from Jerusalem to the heavens, where he met various prophets and ultimately stood before Allah. This event is often associated with the Prophet's spiritual purification and the establishment of the five daily prayers (Salah). This journey is described in both the Qur'an and Hadith. The Qur'an references the ascent in Surah Al-Najm (53:13-18), where it mentions that the Prophet was taken to the highest point in the universe.

We have already written a detailed post on The Miraculous Journey of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) to Jerusalem (Israa) and Heavens (Mairaj), therefore we are omitting details of this Divine miracle here.

In light of modern knowledge, some scholars suggest that the Isra and Miraj could be understood metaphorically or allegorically. For instance:

• Metaphysical Interpretation: The events may represent a deeply spiritual journey rather than a literal, physical journey, emphasizing the Prophet's spiritual elevation and nearness to Allah.
• Quantum or Multidimensional Theories: Some modern thinkers, particularly those interested in reconciling religion and science, have speculated that concepts like "other dimensions" or parallel universes might provide a framework where such extraordinary events could happen. However, these ideas remain speculative and aren't definitive explanations.

Students of science may ponder over it for further study and research. But remember, Divine Miracles have no explanations and are to be accepted as these happened.

The mention of fingerprints in Qur'an led me to Islam (Revert Experiences)

Qur'an, the fourth and last Divine Scripture, is perhaps the easiest Divine religion of all. The six hundred plus pages of Qur'an, as against other books of faith with attached dozens of additional volumes, sums up the guidelines for the mankind to know what Islam is and how to enter into its fold. Putting in the most simple words it is book by our Creator, Allah, addressed to His creations, the mankind. It is this simplistic approach as against of multiple gods, that attracts non-Muslims from around the world to Islam.

I have shared the revert experience of many a non-Muslims, who Alhamdollilah, took their Shahadah previously. And each revert experience has a different start point from which the journey to reversion began. Today, I share an amazing revert experience of a born Catholic who could not come to turns with the notion of many gods and a God with associates. So this Italian sister Federica Tomassi faced with such dilemma, started her inclination towards Islam. Though she had made a mind to embrace Islam, she was still looking for something that could give her the final push into Islam, the most amazing and heartwarming religion, where while reading Qur'an one feels likes if Allah is speaking to its reader in most understandable and simple words. 

Although she read the first few pages of the Qur'an and the second Chapter, Surah 2. Al Baqarah (The Cow), she needed something that could lead her to Islam. While she was already wearing Hijab for it made her felt graceful and holy, she need something that could make her take her ultimate decision to revert to Islam. One day, she randomly opened the Qur'an, a copy of which has been keeping for long, she came to the verses 3-4 of Surah 75. Al Qiyamah (The Doomsday):

"Does man think that We cannot assemble his bones?", "Nay, We are able to put together in perfect order the very tips of his fingers." 

The mention of fingerprints in book that was revealed more than 1400 years ago really surprised her. How could someone know of this scientific fact which has only been recently discovered. Naturally no man could say  this on his own fourteen centuries ago. This revelation could only come the Creator who created the universe and His creations.

Herein under watch the video in which sister in Islam Federica Tomassi explains so eloquently her solo journey to Islam. And amazingly, she mentions Tahajjad (the late night voluntary prayer) as something which is the best of all forms of worship.

I do not know whether she would ever come across this post, but I really commend her for literally doing the whole thing of reversion on her own. Perhaps it for such truth seekers that in Qur'an Allah says: It is a book of guidance who have the foresight to find the wisdom in it.  Looks like Allah really chosen her, guided her. Subhan Allah. May after watch this video, other non-Muslims still mulling over to revert to Islam, get encouraged and take their Shahadah, which according to our sister really made her proud and honour to accept Allah as the Only God without any associates and assistants.

Qur'an, Creation and Modern Science (Reference Page)

Qur'an is the last of the four Divine Scriptures that were revealed unto selected and revered prophets of God. However, it is the most criticized "Book" by the followers of the previous Book holders. It is generally claimed that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ "wrote" the Qur'an by taking excerpts from other Divine Scriptures when he used to go out with his trade caravans and getting to extract Divine knowledge from people of other religions. Further, the Qur'an is often ditched against science and questioned as to why it lacks scientific orientation, as if all three earlier scriptures are based on science.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was an unlettered man upon whom Qur'an was revealed with Divine Wisdom that did not have answers by the most learned religious and other scholars of the time. Can you imagine an unlettered man predicting continuous expansion of the universe fifteen centuries ago or telling the balanced celestial movement of sun and moon and other stars? Or how could he know that there is something about the finger tips or the theory of Big Bang? In fact, most of the people look for "miracles" in Qur'an rather than interpreting the wisdom hidden in the revelations, which in itself are more than miracles.

There are umpteen number of debates that abound the social media on pitching Qur'an against science. But no one tries to clarify that like all Divine Scriptures, Qur'an too is a Book of Divine Wisdom, and not a book of science or fiction. One has to have a grasp of Qur'anic Arabic language to really understand Qur'an and get to know the wisdom hidden in each word of Qur'an. Why Qur'anic Arabic language? Because the commonly spoken Arabic language greatly differs from the Qur'anic language and one may go astray or misunderstood the Divine Wisdom. More often than not, critics of Islam and Qur'an read a translation and subject "their findings" to criticism. The difference between spoken and literary Arabic as the same as spoken and Shakespearean English.

In fact, all debates center on prophets and their lives but not on the Divine Wisdom contained in the Holy Scriptures. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ could listen to anecdotes of earlier prophets from others and insert in Qur'an, but how could he add things the knowledge of which was nonexistent during his times? The unanswered questions which are being answered now make Qur'an unique and full of Divine Wisdom.

We have made an endeavour to dig out knowledge and explanation of Divine Wisdom in number of our earlier posts. To add interest to those who need scientific explanation of Qur'an or to find scientific miracles in Qur'an, we have already published a few posts on the correlation between the Divine Revelations and Scientific Discoveries, so that those who want scientific answers could come to an ease and see how Divine Wisdom. And they would then understand that the Divine Wisdom that remained hidden and unanswered for more than last fourteen hundred years, when Qur'an was revelaed unto Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, has started to be validated as more and more research is carried out and more scintific discoveries unearthed.

Let us start calling a spade a spade and do not contest Qur'an and start to read it objectively, correlating with latest scientific developments. And start to agree that Qur'an is a word of God as no human being could ever write a single line worth that in the Qur'an.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.
