In this regard, a Hadith attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ comes as a beacon of hope to enter the Paradise. The revered Prophet Muhammad ﷺ once indicated that 70,000 of his ummah will enter Paradise without rendering their account. When I read this part of the Hadith, I thought why only 70,000 as there have been millions and millions of Muslims who lived and died and almost two billion presently alive?
Today I came across the full text of the Hadith and found the answer. This Hadith is mentioned in in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: Book of Faith as Hadith number # 525 as under:
Imran b. Husain reported:
Verily the Messenger of Allah ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) said: Seventy thousand men of my Ummah would enter Paradise without rendering account. They (the companions of the Holy Prophet) said: Who would be those, Messenger of Allah? He (the Holy Prophet) said: They would be those who neither practice charm, not take omens, nor do they cauterise, but they repose their trust in their Lord.
Arabic Text:
حَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَارِثِ، حَدَّثَنَا حَاجِبُ بْنُ عُمَرَ أَبُو خُشَيْنَةَ الثَّقَفِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا الْحَكَمُ بْنُ الْأَعْرَجِ، عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ مِنْ أُمَّتِي سَبْعُونَ أَلْفًا بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ»، قَالُوا: مَنْ هُمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ: «هُمُ الَّذِينَ لَا يَسْتَرْقُونَ، وَلَا يَتَطَيَّرُونَ، وَلَا يَكْتَوُونَ، وَعَلَى رَبِّهِمْ يَتَوَكَّلُونَ»
Today, I am much wiser about who those lucky 70,000 would be as hinted by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. In fact these small acts, which we more than usual resort to almost throughout our lives, yet remain oblivious of their negative fallout on our forgiveness on the day of judgement.
Let us take a rundown of these lucky believers - as mentioned in the Hadith above, these will be those who never indulged in the following three things and reposed their trust in their Lord:
- Practicing charm:
- A charm is a magical spell or an object that brings luck: it's also a quality of being attractive and pleasing. To charm someone is to attract them. There are several types of charms, but they mostly relate to attraction and good luck. A lucky coin is a charm. The spell of a witch that entrances you is a charm.
- Magic or charms are strictly forbidden in Islam and those who indulge in such activities, the one who practices it and those who got such people to have their desires fulfilled, mostly by hurting other by way of magic.
- Taking omens:
- An omen is an event or happening that you take as sign of something to come. It's believed to be a bad omen if a black cat crosses your path or if it rains on your wedding day. Omens generally get a bad rap — that's probably because a lot of them predict bad stuff, at least according to superstition.
- We as believers must know that nothing that we see is an indicative of a coming event nor we should believe in superstitions that mostly women believe in like passing of that proverbial black cat, sitting of a crow on the roof of the house or attaching a bad women to a bride if someone suddenly dies or there is a loss in the business.
- As Muslims we must have a firm belief in Allah and whatever comes our way should be taken as a Divine test rather than as a bad omen. For who knows behind the veil of something bad hides something very rewarding and good for us.
- Cauterizing:
- Cauterization (or cauterization, or cautery) is a medical practice or technique of burning a part of a body to remove or close off a part of it. We see such practices in some of the Turkish dramas used as a normal method of stopping bloods sustained in battles. In some countries, such practice is still on going.
- It is reported that Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said, "There is healing in three: in the cutting of a vein, in cauterizing with fire, and in the application of a cupping glass, but I do not endorse cauterizing." This hadith acknowledges cauterization as a valid method of treatment, but it should be avoided altogether.
- The Holy Prophet allowed this method, but did not encourage it to be used frequently, or it was not preferred by him. In the above hadith, cauterization is also approved but not with fire.
- Other than cauterization, the Holy Prophet teaches about how to stop bleeding with some traditional remedies. In the battle of Uhud, the Holy Prophet sustained facial wounds and a broken tooth. It is said that ash from a mat of palm leaves that had been burned and inserted into his wounds stopped his bleeding. In this manner, wound bleeding was stopped. Inserting the ash of a burned mat of palm leaves is a method to stop bleeding in Islam. The ashes of burnt palm leaves are very effective in stopping bleeding, because it is a durable drying agent and because it has the slightest burning effect (on the exposed skin). Other robust drying medications have a burning effect on the skin and cause the blood to be disturbed and the bleeding to increase (Al-Jauziyah 2003). According to research in modern science, the healing of wounds in the skin relies on the availability of trace elements or enzymes which increase the structural components in the repair of tissues. Ashes contain all the required elements for the healing of wounds. Ashes also have the combination of metals which are needed to heal wounds quickly (Shaikh and Shaikh 2008).
- Applying black cumin to wounds or utilizing it in other ways is the most effective method for treating wounds. In various hadith, the Holy Prophet emphasized the significance of black cumin and regarded it as the best remedy for almost all diseases, excluding death. Black cumin is the most effective healer, recuperative agent, and immune booster. According to The Holy Prophet of Islam, five or seven black cumin seeds should be crushed and combined with oil. The mixture should then be placed in each nostril (Muhammad b. Isma’il al-Bukhari 2020).
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.
وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.
May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.
Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.
