99 Attributes of Allah: Al-Warith - The Inheritor, The One whose Existence remains

It is Allah, the Creator of the Universe, who has caused everything to be alive and living and after a stipulated period of time it will be only He Who will cause all living things to cease to exist. And He alone will be the owner of what is left - He alone is The Heir, The Inheritor of All "The Al-Wārith".

Allah in Surah Al Hijr, Chapter 15, verse 23 proclaims:

وَ اِنَّا لَـنَحۡنُ نُحۡىٖ وَنُمِيۡتُ وَنَحۡنُ الۡوٰرِثُوۡنَ‏

It is indeed We Who grant life and cause death and it is We who shall be the sole Inheritors of all

That is to say that your worldly life and all you possess are transitory and temporary, and Allah alone is Eternal. Your end shall come sooner or later, and you shall leave everything behind in this world, which will again become a part of Our treasure.

Likewise at the end of verse 180 of Surah Al-i'Imran Allah proclaims:

ؕ وَ لِلّٰهِ مِيۡرَاثُ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالۡاَرۡضِؕ وَاللّٰهُ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُوۡنَ خَبِيۡرٌ

To Allah belongs the inheritance of the heavens and the earth; and Allah is well aware of what you do.

That is Everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to Allah alone. Hence the possession and use of anything by man is purely transient. For everyone will be dispossessed of his temporary belongings, and everything will ultimately return to and abide with Allah. If anyone therefore spends with open heart in the way of Allah out of his temporary possessions he does so from property which, ultimately, belongs to Allah alone. Anyone who hoards his possessions and fails to spend them in the way of Allah is indeed a loser in the Hereafter.

The root word of the Attribute "al-Warith" is "waratha," inherited: He will inherit all beings after their extinction. Therefore He is the only One Who remains after those who used to think that they possessed wares and items, the things which He had given them, will be gone; their existence, as well as that of what He has given them, is dependent on Him, and on none else.

Allah in Surah Maryam, Chapter 19, verse 40 once again reminds the man that whatever he possesses is time bound and will be no more his after that:

اِنَّا نَحۡنُ نَرِثُ الۡاَرۡضَ وَمَنۡ عَلَيۡهَا وَاِلَـيۡنَا يُرۡجَعُوۡنَ‏

Ultimately, We shall inherit the earth and whatever is on it; to Us shall they be returned.

And Prophet Zechariah cried out to his Lord to bless him with a son, Allah listened to his cry:

وَزَكَرِيَّاۤ اِذۡ نَادٰى رَبَّهٗ رَبِّ لَا تَذَرۡنِىۡ فَرۡدًا وَّاَنۡتَ خَيۡرُ الۡوٰرِثِيۡنَ ۖۚ‏

And We bestowed favour upon Zechariah, when he cried to his Lord: "Lord! Leave me not solitary (without any issue). You are the Best Inheritor." [Surah Al Anbiya 21:89]

Thus it may be seen that  that throughout their lives, many people are obsessed with the accumulation of wealth. This goal takes over their lives and leaves them with little time to contemplate the meaning of their existence. Indeed, until their last breath, they strive for a vain purpose. And yet, one day, at a totally unexpected moment, they will face the angel of death. Their bodies will be wrapped, and they will be buried in the ground, leaving everything else behind. And then everything that remains will return to its Owner, the Almighty Allah, the Ultimate Inheritor.

And one last word for the wealthy and the miser: Seeing people amassing their treasure in coffers and not spending in the name of Allah to help the poor and needy, Allah asks them: And why do you not spend in the cause of Allah while to Allah belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth?  [Surat Al-Hadid 57:10]

So what is the inheritance of man that he leaves behind?  It is his good deeds that are the best things he can leave behind, because that is the true inheritance that actually remains. The Prophet ﷺ (peace be upon him) gave us some examples of those things that remain:
“The good deeds that will reach a believer after his death are: knowledge which he learned and then spread; a righteous child whom he leaves behind; a copy of the Qur’an that he leaves as a legacy; a mosque that he built; a house that he built for wayfarers; a canal that he dug; or charity that he gave during his lifetime when he was in good health. These deeds will reach him after his death.” [Ibn Majah]
So spend what you have over and above your needs to help out others before your time is up in this world. Do not leave behind your coffers unspent for they will be of no avail to you in the Hereafter. But if you spend in the name of Allah, they will become blessings for you and come to your rescue when your deed will found short for your elevation to Jannah. May Allah help us in helping ourselves. Aameen
