99 Attributes of Almighty Allah: Al Quddus - The Most Sacred, The Most Holy, The Most Perfect, The Most Pure

The attribute of al-Quddūs describes the unique and unimaginable purity and perfection that is Allāh.

Allah describes Himself as al Quddūs in Surah al Hashr and Surah al-Jumu`ah:

هُوَ اللّٰهُ الَّذِىۡ لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا هُوَۚ اَلۡمَلِكُ الۡقُدُّوۡسُ السَّلٰمُ الۡمُؤۡمِنُ الۡمُهَيۡمِنُ الۡعَزِيۡزُ الۡجَـبَّارُ الۡمُتَكَبِّرُؕ سُبۡحٰنَ اللّٰهِ عَمَّا يُشۡرِكُوۡنَ
He is Allah than Whom there is La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshiped but He) the King, the Holy, the One Free from all defects, the Giver of security, the Watcher over His creatures, the All-Mighty, the Compeller, the Supreme. Glory be to Allah! (High is He) above all that they associate as partners with Him. [Surah al Hashr 59:23]

ُسَبِّحُ لِلَّهِ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ الْمَلِكِ الْقُدُّوسِ الْعَزِيزِ الْحَكِيمِ
Glorifies Allah whatever (is) in the heavens and whatever (is) in the earth, the Sovereign, the Holy, the All-Mighty, the All-Wise. [Surah al Jumu`ah 62:1]

Linguistically, Quddūs is on the intense structure of the attribute of quds, which refers to cleanliness or tahaarah and comes from the verb qadasa. Al-Quddūs is ‘clean’ or free from any partner, spouse, or child, from death, from injustice, lying, forgetfulness, error, poverty, and stinginess.

Quddoos comes from the root qaaf-daal-seen, which points to three main meanings. The first main meaning is to be pure and clean. The second is to be far removed from impurity or imperfection, and the third main meaning is to be sacred or blessed.

The ancient roots of the Arabic word Quddūs, as well as the Hebrew word Kadosh, point toward that which is set apart, different, that which is 'other'. Thus, al-Quddūs is known as the One who is set apart, distinctly different and separate from all worldly imperfections, sins and faults, the One whose perfection and righteousness are so 'other' that they cannot be grasped by mankind, the truly Blessed One.

According to al-Qurturbi, the name al-Quddūs also describes the One who is glorified and revered by the angels.

Thus the Al Quddūs attributes explains The One Who is pure, spotless, without blemish or fault. The One who is far from, and untouched by, worldly imperfections or faults. The One whose essence and attributes are of unimaginable purity and perfection. The One who is beyond all human understanding of purity, perfection and holiness.
