Man laments: I’m Uncomely - Allah replies: We’ve certainly created man in the best make and appearance

Man is never satisfied of the blessings bestowed upon him by the Lord of the universe. He is always lamenting anything he does not have or something that falls short of his expectations. But while doing so, he never counts his blessings, and laments and complains of his shortcoming.

Most of the men, and especially women, generally complain of their outward appearance and complain of their uncomely appearance. And this grievance gets multiplied when those with good posture and outward appearance mock people of lesser appealing appearance. 

It is here that Allah reminds man that Allah created man in the best image and form, standing upright with straight limbs that He beautified as it appears in the 4th verse of Surah 95. At Teen:

لَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا الۡاِنۡسَانَ فِىۡۤ اَحۡسَنِ تَقۡوِيۡمٍ

(95:4) surely, We created man in the best mould;

This is the truth for which the oath has been sworn by the lands of the fig and the olive (i.e. Syria and Palestine) and Mt. Sinai and Makkah, the city of peace. Man's having been created in the most excellent of molds means that he has been given the finest body which no other living being has been given, and he has been blessed with the noblest faculties of thought, knowledge and intellect which no other creature has been blessed with. Then, since the most sublime model these excellencies and. unique merits of mankind's are the Prophets (upon whom be Allah's peace), and no creation can have a higher rank than they, so that Allah may choose it for appointment to the office of Prophethood, an oath has been sworn by the places associated with the Prophets of God to bear testimony to man's having been created in the finest of molds. The land of Syria and Palestine is the land where a large number of Prophets, from the Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) to the Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him), were raised. Mt. Tur is the place where the Prophet Moses was blessed with Prophethood. As for Makkah, it was founded by the Prophets Abraham and Ishmael themselves. It was on account of their association with it that ' it became the holiest central place of Arabia. It was the Prophet Abraham who had prayed: "O my Lord, make this city a city of peace and security." (Al-Baqarah: 126); and it was because of this prayer that in the midst of chaos and confusion prevailing everywhere in Arabia only this city continued to remain an island of peace for some 2500 years or more. Thus, the verse means to say: "We created mankind in such an excellent mold that it produced men who attained to the most sublime rank of Prophethood." 

Asad Ali explanation:

I.e., endowed with all the positive qualities, physical as well as mental, corresponding to the functions which this particular creature is meant to perform. The concept of "the best conformation" is related to the Qur'anic statement that everything which God creates, including the human being or self (nafs), is "formed in accordance with what it is meant to be" (see 91:7, as well as - in a more general sense - 87:2). This statement does not in any way imply that all human beings have the same "best conformation" in respect of their bodily or mental endowments: it implies simply that irrespective of his natural advantages or disadvantages, each human being is endowed with the ability to make the, for him, best possible use of his inborn qualities and of the environment to which he is exposed. (See in this connection 30:30 and the corresponding notes, especially [27] and [28].

Yusuf Ali Explanation:

Taqwim: Mould, symmetry, form, nature, constitution. There is no fault in Allah's creation. To man Allah gave the purest and best nature, and man's duty is to preserve the pattern on which Allah has made him: xxx. 30. But by making him vicegerent, Allah exalted him in posse even higher than the angels, for the angels had to make obeisance to him (ii. 30-34, and n. 48). But man's position as vicegerent also gives him will and discretion, and if he uses them wrongly, he falls even lower than the beasts. 

Qur'an Wiki Explanation:

God has perfected all His creation; and the special emphasis laid here and elsewhere in the Qur’an on man’s being endowed with perfect form shows clearly that man has enjoyed extra divine care. Moreover, God’s care for man, despite his distortion of his upright nature and the corruption he indulges in, suggests that God has given him special rank and special weight in the universe. God’s care is most clearly apparent in the moulding of man’s highly complicated physical structure and his unique spiritual and mental make-up.

My brothers and sisters in Islam, in view of the aforementioned verse and its explanation, let us always be contended with whatever we have been blessed with and let us not feel dejected about our outwardly appearance, especially if one thinks one is not as comely as others are. Remember, Allah's blessings are not only restricted to one's posture, but a lot many inner qualities which if made use of to the best of one's abilities, these outshine one's otherwise uncomely posture he is so worried about. Let us always be thankful to Allah and concentrate more on our character and abilities rather than beautification or otherwise of our faces and bodies. And let us not mock anyone of one's outward appearnce for it is God's creation and this cannot have been created meaningless.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

Dua / supplication " دُعا " to attain trust of Allah - Attributed to Prophet Ibraheem (Abraham, AS)

Today, in our series of posts on Selected Invocations / Dua " دُعا " from Quran, we share an invocation attributed to the Prophet Ibraheem (Abraham, علي السلام) as mentioned in Surah 60. Al Mumtahina (The Woman Under Questioning), verse 4. The invocation is important in a sense that God forbids praying for the non-believers, no matter they may close be with someone, not even one's parents who have not entered into the fold of Islam despite invitation to Islam.

The inevitable demand of the faith in Allah is denial of taghut (Satan): Whoever rejects taghut and believes in Allah has taken a firm support that never gives way. But those who choose to be followers of Satan, need not have a soft corner for they are not one's brethern in faith. 

The detailed explanation / tafseer / exegesis of the invocation being shared is given in our earlier post: Sūrah Al-Mumtaḥanah - The Woman to be Questioned: Exegesis / Tafsir 60th Chapter of Qur'an. Here we would restrict ourselves on the last part of verse 4, which is the invocation made by Prophet Ibraheem (Abraham, علي السلام) and his companions.

The invocation, the highlighted portion, is an excellent prayer which one must make to put trust in none other than Allah for all matters, and surrender all of our affairs to Him, for to Him is the final Return in the Hereafter: 

قَدْ كَانَتْ لَكُمْ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ فِىٓ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَٱلَّذِينَ مَعَهُۥٓ إِذْ قَالُوا۟ لِقَوْمِهِمْ إِنَّا بُرَءَٰٓؤُا۟ مِنكُمْ وَمِمَّا تَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ كَفَرْنَا بِكُمْ وَبَدَا بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَكُمُ ٱلْعَدَٰوَةُ وَٱلْبَغْضَآءُ أَبَدًا حَتَّىٰ تُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَحْدَهُۥٓ إِلَّا قَوْلَ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ لِأَبِيهِ لَأَسْتَغْفِرَنَّ لَكَ وَمَآ أَمْلِكُ لَكَ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ مِن شَىْءٍ ۖ

 رَّبَّنَا عَلَيْكَ تَوَكَّلْنَا وَإِلَيْكَ أَنَبْنَا وَإِلَيْكَ ٱلْمَصِيرُ

(60:4) You have a good example in Abraham and his companions: they said to their people: “We totally dissociate ourselves from you, and from the deities that you worship instead of Allah. We renounce you6 and there has come to be enmity and hatred between us and you until you believe in Allah, the One True God.” (But you may not emulate) Abraham's saying to his father: “Certainly I will ask pardon for you, although I have no power over Allah to obtain anything on your behalf.” (And Abraham and his companions prayed): "Our Lord! In You we put our trust, and to You we turn in repentance, and to You is the final Return."

The above said invocation sets an excellent example for conduct of Prophet Ibraheem (Abraham, علي السلام) in that he expressed disapproval of his pagan people and broke off all connections with them, yet his promise to pray for the forgiveness of his pagan father and then carrying it out practically is not worth following, for the believers should not have even this much relationship of love and sympathy with the disbelievers.

At another place in Qur'an Allah has given a warning for praying for the non-believers. In (Surah 9. At-Taubah, Ayat 113), Allah has clearly warned: It does not behoove the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and those who have believed that they should pray for the forgiveness of the polytheists even though they be near kinsmen. Thus, no Muslim is allowed to pray for the forgiveness of his unbelieving kinsmen on the basis of the argument that the Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) had done so.

The study of this verse makes the principal manifest that only that act of the prophet is worthy of following, which they persistently practiced till the end. As regards to those acts which they themselves gave up or which Allah restrained them from practicing or which were forbidden in the divine Shariah, they are not worth following, and no one showed follow such acts of theirs on the basis of the argument that that was such and such a prophet’s practice.

This prayer indicates what our attitude should be. We must trust to Allah, and not to Allah's enemies to protect and befriend ourselves, our families, or those near and dear to us.

One cannot follow Ibrahim's example as proof in the case mentioned here, as being allowed to ask Allah to forgive those who died on Shirk. 

Therefore, whenever one errs, one must put one's complete trust in Allah and repent in total earnest so as to be forgiven and return to one's Creator on the Day of Resurrection with head high.

Do the Evil Doers suppose that they will escape the Divine Grasp?

The world has ever been more of oppression than justice and peace. The notion of might is right has always been true and the oppressors always dominated. The powerful always find ways and means to punish the meek and weak with their evil machinations.  Those who are oppressed, weary of their oppressed way of life, often think why doesn't God rein in the treacherous beings and bring them to Divine justice.

The world has never changed from stone age to today's so called developed world. Today we see nations and people oppressed while the world conscious sleeps. The oppressor always thinks that he is getting away with his evil doings, for despite their oppressive designs, no lightening from sky bolts on them and wipes them out for world to live in peace. And they continue to live in palatial abodes and utter prosperity. Does that mean that Divine Justice protects the evil? Well this is what the weak and oppressed think.

But men of true faith never lose hope and remain patient for no one is beyond the Divine Grasp and sooner or later the tyrants and the demagogues are holed up and punished so severely that they would have never imagined. They have faith that God permits leases time to the wicked, so that get a chance to repent.  We have recently shared a post "Why does Allah give leverage to the tyrants and demagogues" based on the 45th verse / ayat of Surah 35. Fatir. Today we share another similar verse from Surah 29. Ankabut - The Spider (verse 4):

اَمۡ حَسِبَ الَّذِيۡنَ يَعۡمَلُوۡنَ السَّيِّاٰتِ اَنۡ يَّسۡبِقُوۡنَا​ ؕ سَآءَ مَا يَحۡكُمُوۡنَ‏ 

(29:4) Do the evil-doers suppose that they will get the better of Us? How evil is their judgement! 

This may refer to all those people who disobey Allah's Commands though this was particularly implies those wicked chiefs of the Quraish, who were in the forefront in their antagonism to Islam and persecution of the converts to Islam, e.g. Walid .bin Mughirah, Abu Jahl, `Utbah, Shaibah,`Uqbah bin Abi Mu`ait, Hanzalah bin Wail, etc. Here the context itself requires that after exhorting the Muslims to patience and fortitude against the trials and tests, those people also should be chided and scolded, who were persecuting the believers." 

It may also mean: "...that they will escape Our grasp." The words yasbiquna " يَّسۡبِقُوۡنَا " in the original may have two meanings: (1)`Whatever we will (i.e. the success of the mission of Our Messenger) should meet with failure, and whatever they wish (i.e. to frustrate the mission of Our Messenger) should be accomplished;" and (2) "We may want to seize them for their excesses and they should be able to escape and get out of Our reach.

However, the verse  has relevance even today when all over the world the weak nations are oppressed, kept under tighter control of bigger nations, the demagogues of another kind on the pretext of the safeguard of their interest. Do they think that people of Kashmir, Palestine, Afghanistan and Myanmar can be oppressed forever? In the end everything is ends as planned by  Allah and evil machinations of worldly gods fail and crumble miserably.

Yusuf Ali  Explanation: 

If the enemies of Truth imagine that they will "be first" by destroying Truth before it takes root, they are sadly at fault, for their own persecution may help to plant Allah's Truth more firmly in men's hearts.

Explanation Javed Ahmed Ghamidi:

This is a reference to the people who were targeting the weak Muslims through oppression and persecution.

( [Alas!] how ill are ) Ie., an ill-judgement in every respect. Imām Amīn Aḥsan Iṣlāḥī writes:

… If they think that God is so weak as to not able to seize them, even then this is an entirely incorrect judgement. And if they think that God is unconcerned about their oppression and injustice, then too they have reached a very wrong conclusion. (Amīn Aḥsan Iṣlāḥī, Tadabbur-i Qur’ān, vol. 6, 17)

Explanation Qur'an Wiki:

Those who subject the believers to hardship and act wickedly will not escape God’s punishment, even though they may appear strong and victorious. This is again a true promise made by God. No wicked or evil person should think that he can escape. If he does then his judgement is absolutely erroneous. God, who has made tests a general rule to distinguish true believers from false claimants, is the One who has also made punishment of the perpetrators of evil a general rule that never fails.

To Him is your return - This is Allah's promise that will certainly come true.

Many an infidel in the times of Allah's prophets and even the atheists believe that life in the Hereafter is just a farce and that when they die, that will be the end of their life forever. So whatever enjoyment they can draw out of their life, the must for such good days will end when their life ends. It is for them that Allah has warned at many a places in the Qur'an, and even i the earlier scriptures, that there is a life after this worldly life when every man who died will be resurrected and made to answer for his doings in their wordily life and will be certainly rewarded for their good and bad deed. And for those who denied Allah's commandments and His prophets will suffer a painful chastisement for their denying the truth.

Today we share the 4th verse of Surah 10. Yunus as a warning for those disbelieved in Allah's promise:

اِلَيۡهِ مَرۡجِعُكُمۡ جَمِيۡعًا ​ؕ وَعۡدَ اللّٰهِ حَقًّا​ ؕ اِنَّهٗ يَـبۡدَؤُا الۡخَـلۡقَ ثُمَّ يُعِيۡدُهٗ لِيَجۡزِىَ الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا وَعَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِ بِالۡقِسۡطِ​ؕ وَالَّذِيۡنَ كَفَرُوۡا لَهُمۡ شَرَابٌ مِّنۡ حَمِيۡمٍ وَّعَذَابٌ اَلِيۡمٌۢ بِمَا كَانُوۡا يَكۡفُرُوۡنَ‏ 

(10:4) To Him is your return. This is Allah's promise that will certainly come true. Surely it is He Who brings about the creation of all and He will repeat it so that He may justly reward those who believe and do righteous deeds; and that those who disbelieve may have a draught of boiling water and suffer a painful chastisement for their denying the truth.

(To Him is your return) This is the second basic principle of the teachings of every prophet; “You shall have to return to your Lord and render an account of all you did in this world.” The first principle has been stated in the preceding verse: Allah alone is your Lord: therefore worship only Him.

(This is Allah's promise that will certainly come true. Surely it is He Who brings about the creation of all and He will repeat it)  This sentence contains both a statement and its proof. The statement is, “Allah will again bring to life all human beings,” and the proof is, “This is as easy for Allah as it was to create them the first time.” The one who acknowledges that Allah has originated all creation (and who can deny this except those atheists who accepted the absurd theory of “creation without a creator” merely to get a plea for discarding the religion of the Christian clergy?) cannot consider this as impossible or irrational.

The reason why Allah will again bring the whole mankind to life is to reward the believers and to punish the disbelievers. After showing that this is possible to raise the dead, it is stated that it is absolutely necessary to fulfill the demands of common sense and justice, for full justice cannot be done without this. Common sense and justice demand that those who believe and do righteous deeds should be given their full rewards, and those who disbelieve and reject the truth and do evil deeds, should be duly punished. As every sensible and just person knows that this demand of justice is not fulfilled in its entirety, and cannot be fulfilled, in this world. It is absolutely essential that the entire mankind should again be brought to life for this purpose. 

The last part of the verse quoted above is similar to 11th verse of Surah 11. Hud:

(11:103) Surely in that is a sign for him who fears the chastisement of the Hereafter. That will be a Day when all men shall be mustered together; that will be a Day when whatever happens shall be witnessed by all.  

As for the ungrateful people whose abode will be the hell fire, the 38th verse of Surah 7 Al A'raf also points in the same direction:

(7:38) Allah will say: 'Enter the fire of Hell and join the nations of jinn and men that have gone before You.' As a nation enters Hill, it will curse the one that went before it, and when all are gathered there, the last of them shall say of the first: 'Our Lord! These are the ones who led us astray. Let their torment be doubled in Hell-Fire.' He will answer: 'Each will have a doubled torment; although you do not know.' 

Tafsir Ibn Kathir: The Return of Everything is to Allah - Allah tells us that the return of the creatures on the Day of Resurrection is to Him. He will not leave anyone of them without bringing everyone into being as He brought them in the beginning. Then Allah states that He is going to bring all the creatures into being.

(And He it is Who originates the creation, then He will repeat it (after it has perished); and this is easier for Him.) (30:27),

(that He may reward with justice those who believed and did deeds of righteousness.) meaning, the reward will be with justice and complete recompense.

(But those who disbelieved will have a drink of boiling fluids and painful torment because they used to disbelieve.) meaning, because of their disbelief they will be punished on the Day of Resurrection by different forms of torment, such as fierce hot winds, boiling water, and the shadow of black smoke.

(This is so! Then let them taste it; a boiling fluid and dirty wound discharges. And other (torments) of similar kind all together!) (38: 57-58)

(This is the Hell which the criminals denied. They will go between it (Hell) and the fierce boiling water!) (55:43-44)  

Yusuf Ali Explains that Allah's creation is not a simple act, once done and finished with. It is continuous, and there are many stages, not the least important of which is the Hereafter, when the fruits of our life will be achieved (depending on the positivity or negativity of of our deeds in our earthly life)

May Allah help us understand Qur'ān and help us to act upon the commandments of Allah contained therein. Aameen.

An effort has been made to gather explanation / exegesis of the surahs of the Qur'ān from authentic sources and then present a least possible condensed explanation of the surah. In that:

• The plain translation has been taken from the Qur'ān officially published by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. [1]
• The exegesis of the chapters of the Quran is mainly based on the "Tafhim al-Qur'an - The Meaning of the Qur'an" by one of the most enlightened scholars of the Muslim World Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi. [2]
