New Year Resolve: Believers!! Do not quarrel among your ranks, lest your unity withers away

New Year each year ushers in new aspirations, raised goal posts and many new resolves. These new resolves stem from personal to companies and even national level. However, lack of unity remains unresolved despite tall claims, especially when it comes to larger communities or groups of communities. 

The Muslim Ummah is one such community which has always lacked unity and many Muslim countries remain at daggers drawn with other Muslim countries due to associations with blocs, alignment on sectarian basis and many other dividing factors. Unfortunately, this is not something new. The disunity has been there even in the early days of Islam and still continues. It is sad to see Muslims fighting each other and the stake holders who do not let unity be forged into Muslim countries, add fuel to fire by creating mistrust. 

We, in our series of posts on Selected verses from Qur'an, share the 46th verse from Surah 8. Al Anfaal, which cautions Muslims not to quarrel among their ranks for it may weaken them and take courage out of them, needed to face the onslaught of their enemies. although, this caution was intended for the believers to stand in Unisom when fighting with their enemies, it still stands true today, as even before battles are fought, new strategies and tactics in the form of fifth generation warfare are let lose to weaken the morale and feed in disarray among the ranks of the believers.

Such verses must continue to be shared or even reshared as many times as possible so as to keep cautioning the believers not to fall into trap of disunity:

وَاَطِيۡعُوا اللّٰهَ وَرَسُوۡلَهٗ وَلَا تَنَازَعُوۡا فَتَفۡشَلُوۡا وَتَذۡهَبَ رِيۡحُكُمۡ​ وَاصۡبِرُوۡا​ ؕ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ مَعَ الصّٰبِرِيۡنَ​ۚ‏ 
(8:46) And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not quarrel with one another lest you lose courage and your power depart. Be steadfast, surely Allah is with those who remain steadfast.
As the Arabic word (sabr) which has been translated into fortitude is very comprehensive in meaning, 'practice fortitude' implies: "Keep your feelings and passions under control; avoid rashness, bewilderment, despair, and greediness: keep cool and calm and make considered decisions; remain firm and steadfast in the face of dangers and difficulties; don't take any wrong step even under the greatest provocations; don't lose your senses even when you are attacked by afflictions and are in a sad plight; don't take any hasty action in your impatience to achieve your objective without delay with the help of some seeming effective device and don't be enticed by the temptation of some worldly interest or gain or lust" . Allah helps those who practice fortitude (sabr) in accordance with the above implications.

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir: (The Command for Endurance when the Enemy Engaging)
Allah commands endurance upon meeting the enemy in battle and ordains patience while fighting them. Muslims are not allowed to run or shy away, or show cowardice in battle. They are commanded to remember Allah while in that condition and never neglect His remembrance. They should rather invoke Him for support, trust in Him and seek victory over their enemies from Him. They are required to obey Allah and His Messenger in such circumstances adhering to what He commanded them, and abstaining from what He forbade them. They are required to avoid disputing with each other, for this might lead to their defeat and failure, 

(Lest your strength departs), so that your strength, endurance and courage do not depart from you,

(And be patient. Surely, Allah is with the patients.)

In their courage, and obedience to Allah and His Messenger, the Companions reached a level never seen before by any nation or generation before them, or any nation that will ever come. Through the blessing of the Messenger and their obedience to what he commanded, the Companions were able to open the hearts, as well as, the various eastern and western parts of the world in a rather short time. This occurred even though they were few, compared to the armies of the various nations at that time. For example, the Romans, Persians, Turks, Slavs, Berbers, Ethiopians, Sudanese tribes, the Copts and the rest of the Children of Adam. They defeated all of these nations, until Allah's Word became the highest and His religion became dominant above all religions. The Islamic state spread over the eastern and western parts of the world in less than thirty years. May Allah grant them His pleasure, as well as, be pleased with them all, and may He gather us among them, for He is the Most Generous, and Giving.

Muhammad Asad Explanation:
The relevant word is rih, which literally signifies "wind"; it is used metaphorically to denote "spirit" or "moral strength".

Yusuf Ali Explanation
A fine description of the Muslim virtues which make for success and whose loss brings about humiliation and failure. "Power": literally, "wind", -the favourable wind for a sailing ship.

Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Explanation:
A special meaning of obeying God and His Messenger is also understood here that while combating the enemy full discipline is shown in following the directives of God and His Messenger. This is because just as lack of God’s remembrance causes disruption in the mind and heart of a person, lack of discipline disturbs the order and system of a group.

(..Remain steadfast because God is with those who are steadfast) This statement was given earlier with relation to individuals. Here it has been given with relation to collectivities. Imām Amīn Aḥsan Iṣlāḥī writes:
... The implication is that if they want God’s help and close association, they should prove themselves worthy by their collective character. God does not help an ill-disciplined mob. He helps those who fight for His cause in a united and orderly way. (Amīn Aḥsan Iṣlāḥī, Tadabbur-i Qur’ān, vol. 3, 488)
Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:
Obedience to God and His Messenger ensures that the believers go into the battle submitting themselves totally to God. There will be no room for any cause of conflict or dispute: “Do not dispute with one another, lest you lose heart and your moral strength.” People fall into dispute when they have different authorities which they look to for leadership and guidance, or when desire is the ultimate factor that shapes people’s views and ideas. When people obey only God and His Messenger, the main cause of dispute between them disappears, no matter how much their views differ over the question under discussion. Having different views is never a cause of dispute and conflict.

What causes conflict is desire, making everyone insist that his view is the one to follow, even when it appears to be wrong. Desire causes ‘self’ to be placed in opposition to ‘right’ and attaching more importance to self in the first place. For this reason, Muslims are given this directive to obey God and His Messenger at the time of battle. It is a question of discipline that is essential in battle. It is an obedience to the High Command which reflects itself in a genuine obedience to the leader in command of the Muslim forces. Steadfastness and patience in adversity are also essential, whether internal within oneself, or on the battlefield: “Be patient, for God is with those who are patient.” Being with God will certainly ensure success and victory for those who are steadfast.

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

A prayer for new year 2023

The first sun of the new year 2023 is about to dawn and expected to bring in new hopes for the next twelve months and many years thereafter. We always have expectations and hopes, though many wither away due to our follies, incompetence and shallow faith in God. The year 2022 has not been well managed by us and looking back is not much too easy. We have had wars, continue to continue from the previous years and no end is foreseen in the new year 2023.

Millions are dying in hunger, while trillions are being spent to kill more and more soldiers and non-soldiers for God knows which national interest of big countries. If somehow, we could harness aggression and stop wars and money spent on wars is diverted to bring peace and feed countless hungry mouths, the world will be a heaven on earth.

Looking back, let us thank God first for the countless blessings He bestowed on us, though we did not deserve at all
Let us thank God for the mercy He has shown on us and not brought His wrath on us despite our follies

To continue into the new year 2023, it is my life's earnest desire and heartfelt invocation that:
May God bless us all
Bless our homes, our children, homes and countries from the clutches of the war mongers
May God bless us happiness, peace and love for each other
May God shield our evil desires, our sins and deceit for others
May God forgive all our past mistakes, sins and wrongdoings and pave way for a error less life
May God save us from being dishonoured and have mercy on us
May God realize our spoken and unspoken invocations and supplications
May all hungry mouths be well fed
May wars and chaos be turned into peace and tranquility
May all our difficulties and problems be eased 
May all those suffering from life threatening diseases be given new lives and be healthy again
May hate and deceit be erased from us
May God instill love in our hearts so that we love each other
May this world become a living heaven for the entire mankind

Let us carry the sweet things that happened to us in the past years
Let us carry these into our hearts and spread love all over in coming days
Let us love each other once again and let the man live in peace forever

Our Lord, grant us what is good in this world and what is good in the World to Come, and protect us from the chastisement of the Fire
Our Lord! We do indeed believe in you alone and no one else, so forgive us our sins and keep us safe from the chastisement of the Fire
Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and do not have mercy on us, we shall surely be among the losers
Our Lord! Grant us Your mercy and provide for us rectitude in our affairs
My Lord, verily we are vanquished; so, come to our aid
My Lord, all those who are reading these lines, please bless them all
My Lord, we have deviated from your path, please show us Your light
And direct us on to the Straight Way - Siraat e Mustaqeem
My Lord! Enable me and my offspring to establish Prayer, and do accept, our Lord, this prayer of mine
My Lord, dispose me that I may give thanks for the bounty that You have bestowed upon me and my parents, and dispose me that I may do righteous deeds that would please You, and also make my descendants righteous. I repent to You, and I am one of those who surrender themselves to You

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

Prophetic Supplication for Protection from trials of Fire and evils of richness and poverty

The trial of the Fire, on the Day of the Resurrection, will be the most painful trial of the man. No matter how pious one may be, yet he does not know that he may have committed a sin, though not knowingly, which may become a hurdle for him when the balance will be set in place and even good and bad deeds will be weighed even to the size of an atom of the desert sand.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was always found supplicating for protection against all evils, especially the evils of richness and poverty, not only for himself but as a caution for his companions so that they too should seek refuge from all trials, so that we may be forgiven, 

Today's selected supplication as it appears in Sunan Abi Dawud (Book # 8 Prayer (Kitab Al-Salat): Detailed Injunctions about Witr كتاب الوتر / Chapter # 32 Regarding Seeking Refuge باب فِي الاِسْتِعَاذَةِ ) as Hadith number # 1543, is yet another Prophetic Supplication which we must emulate and seeks Allah's pardon and forgiveness while we are still alive:

'Aishah narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) would supplicate with the following words:

حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُوسَى الرَّازِيُّ، أَخْبَرَنَا عِيسَى، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، رضى الله عنها أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ يَدْعُو بِهَؤُلاَءِ الْكَلِمَاتِ ‏ "‏ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ النَّارِ وَعَذَابِ النَّارِ وَمِنْ شَرِّ الْغِنَى وَالْفَقْرِ ‏"‏‏.‏
"O Allah! I seek refuge in You from the trials of the Fire, and the punishment of the Fire, and from the evils of richness and poverty."

It may be seen that the supplication is against evils of richness and poverty. While it is understood that riches take us away from remembrance of Allah and invite in the evil, the life of poverty too is a life of tests and trials. One tends to commit crimes and sins when he is hit against the wall, which may hold him accountable and may take him near the punishment of the Fire. So, time is now to supplicate and invoke many mercies of Allah so that we may be forgiven before our worldly life ends.

Overview: Sūrah Fāṭir (The Originator) - 35th Chapter of Qur'an

Sūrah Fāṭir (The Originator) is the thirty fifth Sürah with 45 āyāt and five rukus, is part of the 22nd Juzʼ  of the Qur'ān. The Sūrah derives its title from the word Fāṭir which is mentioned in the very first verse, in which God’s power of creation is affirmed. It is also known as Sūrat al-Malāʼikah (سورة ﺍﻟملائكة - The Angels). for the word al-Malāʼikah (سورة ﺍﻟملائكة - The Angels) which also occurs in the first verse, where God mentions the wings of the angels.  God’s power is confirmed and contrasted with the powerlessness of idols.  The idolaters receive a warning and the Prophet is comforted.

The internal evidence of the style shows that the period of the revelation of this Sarah is probably the middle Makkan period, and especially that part of it, when antagonism had grown quite strong and every sort of mischief was being adopted to frustrate the mission of the Holy Prophet.

The Sūrah has been divided into five Ruku as under:
  • Ruku One: Verses 1- 7: None can withhold or award blessings besides Allah and Shaitan is your enemy, so take him as your enemy. 
  • Ruku Two: Verses 8-14: (8-9) That person who considers his evil deeds to be good cannot be guided to the Right Path.  (10-11) Let all those who are seeking honor know that real honor is in the obedience of Allah. (12-14 Allah) has created water, day, night, sun and moon for man's benefit and Deities besides Allah can neither hear, nor response nor yet own even a thread of a date-stone
  • Ruku Three: Verses 15-26: (15-18) Mankind is in need of Allah, while He is not in need of anyone. (19-26) Living and dead are not alike You cannot make those who are buried in the grave hear you
  • Ruku Four: Verses 27-37: Those who recite Al Qur'an, establish Salah and give charity may hope for Allah's blessings and rewards and Those who disbelieve shall have a painful punishment in the Hell-Fire forever.
  • Ruku One: Verses 38-45: (38-41) Allah has not sent any Book which has a provision of Shirk (worshipping anyone else besides Allah). (42-45) Plotting evil recoil none but the author of it and If Allah was to punish people for their wrong doings, He would have not left even and animal around.
Herein we present an overview of the Sūrah. بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ 
"In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful"

اَ لۡحَمۡدُ لِلّٰهِ فَاطِرِ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالۡاَرۡضِ جَاعِلِ الۡمَلٰٓـئِكَةِ رُسُلًا اُولِىۡۤ اَجۡنِحَةٍ مَّثۡنٰى وَثُلٰثَ وَرُبٰعَ ؕ يَزِيۡدُ فِى الۡخَـلۡقِ مَا يَشَآءُ ؕ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ عَلٰى كُلِّ شَىۡءٍ قَدِيۡرٌ‏ 
(35:1) All praise be to Allah, the Fashioner of the heavens and earth, Who appointed angels as His message bearers, having two, three, four wings. He adds to His creation whatever He pleases. Verily, Allah has power over everything.

The discourse is meant to warn and reprove the people of Makkah and their chiefs for their antagonistic attitude that they had then adopted towards the Holy Prophet's message of Tauhid, like a well-wisher, and also to admonish them like a teacher, as if to say: "O foolish people, the way to which this Prophet is calling you is to your own advantage. Your anger, your tricks and machinations against it and your conspiracies and designs to frustrate it are not directed against him but against your own selves. If you do not listen to him, you will be harming your own selves, not him. Just consider and ponder over what he says : there is nothing wrong in it. He repudiates shirk. If you look around carefully, you will realize that there is no basis for shirk in the world. He presents the doctrine of Tauhid. If you use your common sense, you will come to the conclusion that there is no being, beside Allah, Creator of the Universe, which might possess divine attributes and powers and authority. He tells you that you have not been created to be irresponsible in this world, but you have to render an account of your deeds before your God, and that there is life after the life of this world when everyone will meet the consequences of what he has done here. If you think a little you will see that your doubts and your astonishment about it are absolutely baseless. Don't you see the phenomenon of the reproduction of creation day and night? How can then your own recreation be impossible for that God Who created you from an insignificant sperm drop? Doesn't your own intellect testify that the good and the evil cannot be alike? Then think and judge for yourselves as to what is reasonable, should the good and the evil meet with the same fate and end up in the dust, or should the good be requited with good and the evil with evil? Now, if you do not admit and acknowledge these rational and reasonable things and do not abandon your false gods, and wish to continue living only as irresponsible people in the world, the Prophet will not lose anything. It is you yourselves who will suffer the consequences. The Prophet's only responsibility was to make the truth plain to you, which he has done."

In this connection, the Holy Prophet has been consoled again and again, as if to say: "When you are doing full justice to the preaching of your mission, you do not incur any responsibility for those who persist in their error and do not accept and follow the right way." Furthermore, he has also been consoled to the effect "You should neither grieve on account of those who do not want to believe, nor consume yourself with the thought of how to bring them to the rights path. Instead of this, you should pay your full attention to those who are inclined to listen to you."

The believers also, in this connection, have been given the good news so that they may feel strengthened and encouraged and remain steadfast on the path of the truth with full faith in the promises made by Allah.

An evil scheme [ultimately] besieges the person who contrives it

There are many in world who have evil residing in them and they are all the time ready to contrive evil designs against others. This stems from individual to level of nations. And this is not an unusual thing for it has always been so since worldly life began. The prophets chosen by God were the most hit and were most of their lives surrounded by evil designs of the people who did not believe in them and wanted to harm them so as to 'preserve' their ancestorial beliefs and way of life.

But the time showed that all such evil schemes utterly failed and those who hatched the schemes were devastated and destroyed. Today, we can only see their remnants, while those who preached the word of God succeeded and we still see Divine order prevailing over the utterly disgusting fate of those who tried to stopped them.

When Prophet Muhammad ﷺ proclaimed Islam, he too was physically, mentally and morally harmed so to stop him from propagating the world of God. But despite all evil efforts, he succeeded and a day came when he entered Makkah, the stronghold of the pagans of Makkah with no resistance. And theen Islam spread to the entire world, as we can see it today, despite all hurdles and schemes. Today, Islam is the most thriving, yet threatened religion and schemes after schemes have been and still being made to arrest its spread. But it continues and those who are plotting against it see their schemes falling back on them as Islam is said to be the leading religion of the world by 2050.

The following verse selected for our series of posts on Selected Verses from Qur'an, is a Divine Warning for those who hatch schemes against Islam, the last of the Godly religion, or even against others, and tells them that no matter what schemes they may hatch, those will besiege them and mock them for having failed.

اۨسۡتِكۡبَارًا فِى الۡاَرۡضِ وَمَكۡرَ السَّيّیٴِؕ وَلَا يَحِيۡقُ الۡمَكۡرُ السَّيِّـئُ اِلَّا بِاَهۡلِهٖ ؕ فَهَلۡ يَنۡظُرُوۡنَ اِلَّا سُنَّتَ الۡاَوَّلِيۡنَ ۚ فَلَنۡ تَجِدَ لِسُنَّتِ اللّٰهِ تَبۡدِيۡلًا ۚ وَلَنۡ تَجِدَ لِسُنَّتِ اللّٰهِ تَحۡوِيۡلًا‏ 
(35:43) They began to wax even more proud on earth and contrived evil designs although the contriving of evil designs only overtakes their authors. Are they waiting, then, for anything except what happened to the nations before them? You shall not find any change in the Way of Allah; and you shall not find anything that can ever alter the Way of Allah.

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir
((They took to flight because of their) arrogance in the land) means, they were too arrogant to follow the signs of Allah.

(and their plotting of evil.) means, they plotted to prevent people from following the path of Allah.

(But the evil plot encompasses only him who makes it.) means, the evil consequences of that will come back upon them and not on others.

(Then, can they expect anything (else) but the Sunnah (way of dealing) of the peoples of old) meaning, the punishment of Allah for disbelieving in His Messengers and going against His command.

(and no turning off will you find in Allah's Sunnah.) means, it does not change or alter, and this is what happens to every disbeliever.

(and no turning off will you find in Allah's Sunnah.) means, (But when Allah wills a people's punishment, there can be no turning back of it) (13:11). This means, no one can remove that from them or ward it off from them. And Allah knows best.

Yusuf Ali Explanation
Two reasons are mentioned why the Truth is refused acceptance. (1) Unregenerate man is arrogant, and Truth and Righteousness expose all his pretenses. (2) He hopes, by underhand plots, to undermine Truth and destroy it; but he is caught in his own snares, while Truth marches forward triumphant.

In all history, men who followed evil were dealt with in three stages by Allah: (1) He was forbearing and merciful, and gave them respite; (2) He sent them admonition through His Messengers, or His Signs, or His revelation; (3) He dealt out justice and punishment. At any given moment, those given to iniquity may well be asked: "Are you going to wait through all these stages or are you going at once to repent, obtain forgiveness, and walk in the ways of righteousness?"

Allah's Laws are fixed, and His ways of dealing with those who follow iniquity are the same in all ages. Our human will may falter or turn away from its course, but Allah's Will ever follows its course and cannot be turned away by any cause whatever.

Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:
Needless to say, only foul people would swear so strongly and then behave with such arrogance and evil. The sūrah exposes them, recording their behaviour, before adding to their disgrace a warning to all who emulate such actions: “Yet such evil scheming will engulf none but its authors.” Thus, their evil will harm no one but themselves. It will engulf and ruin them.

This being the case, what are they waiting for? They cannot wait for anything other than the fate that engulfed those who rejected the truth in the past. They are well aware of that fate. Hence, they can wait for nothing other than the operation of God’s law which will never change: “Can they expect anything but the way of those unbelievers of old times? No change will you ever find in God’s ways; no deviation will you ever find there.”

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 
وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

Prophetic Supplication for protection against Grief, Incapacity and Cowardice (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has been an excellent role model for his companions of his time and for the rest of the humanity till the end of this earthly world. His every word and gesture were a means of guidance for his followers, his every supplication to emulate. In our series of posts on prophetic supplications attributed to him, today we share yet another prayer which the revered Prophet of Allah made himself much too often so that others too could invoke Allah's countless mercies. The supplication is especially to be made in times when a believer is in low spirits due to grief or incapacity.

This Hadith is mentioned in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī  (Book 80 Invocations كتاب الدعوات/ Chapter 40: To seek refuge with Allah from cowardice and laziness باب الاِسْتِعَاذَةِ مِنَ الْجُبْنِ وَالْكَسَلِ‏) as Hadith 6369, given herein under:

Narrated by Anas bin Malik:

حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ أَبِي عَمْرٍو، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَنَسًا، قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ ‏ "‏ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْهَمِّ وَالْحَزَنِ، وَالْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ، وَالْجُبْنِ وَالْبُخْلِ، وَضَلَعِ الدَّيْنِ، وَغَلَبَةِ الرِّجَالِ ‏"‏‏.

The Prophet (ﷺ) used to say, "O Allah! I seek refuge with You from worry and grief, from incapacity and laziness, from cowardice and miserliness, from being heavily in debt and from being overpowered by (other) men." 

as can be seen it is a wholesome prayer to be made specially in times of grief and incapacity. It is also to be made to save oneself from cowardice, to stand for one's rights and to prevent being overtaken by others. It is also to be made when a man is under debt and no other way seems to be helping him. Let us always turn to Allah and supplicate the way Prophet Muhammad ﷺ did, for his words are the most balanced and wholesome, and we do hope Allah will accept our supplications.

How Qur'an describes miraculous birth of Messiah, Eesa (Jesus), the son of Mary

25th December enlightens up the Christian world for the celebrate the birth of a God in human flesh. The history and the Divine Scriptures have been so much twisted and modified to turn a Prophet of God into a human God, something that is against the teachings of Injeel (Bible) wherein Jesus proclaims himself as a servant of God and proclaims whatever he says has been from the Lord. Herein under are some verses from Bible that proclaim Jesus as son of God:
And when Jesus is baptized the Father speaks from heaven and says: “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased” (Mark 1:11).

“The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God” (Mark 1:1). 

God, our Father in Heaven, loves us immensely. His greatest gift to humankind, His Son, Jesus Christ, reflects that love. John 3:16 in the Bible describes God’s love and His plan for the happiness of His children. 

And this wrong perception angered the Jews who ultimately had him crucified:
“This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God” (John 5:18). 

The Qur'an too mentions the miraculous birth of Prophet Eesa (Jesus, may peace be upon him) and calls him Son of Mary, for the miraculous birth of Jesus should not equate him as son of God and even make him as par with God. Instead of bowing to God for showing the people of Israel a Divine Miracle, terming a prophet into God is extremely misleading. And it is for this reason that more and more Christians are embracing Islam for Qur'an explicitly removes any misconception about the Prophet Eesa. 

Before we share the verses related to birth of Prophet Eesa, let us just share another verse from Surah Maryam, in which those who say that God has had a son are warned for their blasphemous allegations:

  • (19:36) (Jesus had said): "Indeed Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so serve Him alone. This is the Straight Way
  • (19:88) They claim: "The Most Compassionate Lord has taken a son to Himself."
  • (19:89) Surely you have made a monstrous statement.
  • (19:90) It is such a monstrosity that heavens might well-nigh burst forth at it, the earth might be cleaved, and the mountains fall
  • (19:91) at their ascribing a son to the Most Compassionate Lord.
  • (19:92) It does not befit the Most Compassionate Lord that He should take a son.
  • (19:93) There is no one in the heavens and the earth but he shall come to the Most Compassionate Lord as His servant.

Now, we share a few verses from Surah 3. Al-i'Imran (The Family of Imran), which too mention the miraculous birth of Prophet Eesa from the time angels approached Mary, mother of Jesus to give her glad tidings of a son:

اِذۡ قَالَتِ الۡمَلٰٓـئِكَةُ يٰمَرۡيَمُ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ يُبَشِّرُكِ بِكَلِمَةٍ مِّنۡهُ ۖ اسۡمُهُ الۡمَسِيۡحُ عِيۡسَى ابۡنُ مَرۡيَمَ وَجِيۡهًا فِى الدُّنۡيَا وَالۡاٰخِرَةِ وَمِنَ الۡمُقَرَّبِيۡنَۙ‏ 
(3:45) And when the angels said: 'O Mary! Allah gives you the glad tidings of a command from Him: his name shall be Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary. He shall be highly honoured in this world and in the Next, and shall be one of those near stationed to Allah.
وَيُكَلِّمُ النَّاسَ فِى الۡمَهۡدِ وَكَهۡلًا وَّمِنَ الصّٰلِحِيۡنَ‏ 
(3:46) And he shall speak to men in the cradle and also later when he grows to maturity and shall indeed be among the righteous.'
قَالَتۡ رَبِّ اَنّٰى يَكُوۡنُ لِىۡ وَلَدٌ وَّلَمۡ يَمۡسَسۡنِىۡ بَشَرٌ ​ؕ قَالَ كَذٰلِكِ اللّٰهُ يَخۡلُقُ مَا يَشَآءُ​ ؕ اِذَا قَضٰٓى اَمۡرًا فَاِنَّمَا يَقُوۡلُ لَهٗ كُنۡ فَيَكُوۡنُ‏ 
(3:47) She said: 'O my Lord! How shall I have a son when no man has ever touched me?' The angel answered: Thus, shall it be. Allah creates whatever He wills. When He decides something, He merely says: "Be" and it is.
وَيُعَلِّمُهُ الۡكِتٰبَ وَالۡحِكۡمَةَ وَالتَّوۡرٰٮةَ وَالۡاِنۡجِيۡلَ​ۚ‏ 
(3:48) And He will teach him the Book, the Wisdom, the Torah, the Gospel,
وَمُصَدِّقًا لِّمَا بَيۡنَ يَدَىَّ مِنَ التَّوۡرٰٮةِ وَلِاُحِلَّ لَـكُمۡ بَعۡضَ الَّذِىۡ حُرِّمَ عَلَيۡكُمۡ​وَجِئۡتُكُمۡ بِاٰيَةٍ مِّنۡ رَّبِّكُمۡ فَاتَّقُوۡا اللّٰهَ وَاَطِيۡعُوۡنِ‏ 
(3:50) And I have come to confirm the truth of whatever there still remains of the Torah, and to make lawful to you some of the things which had been forbidden to you. have come to you with a sign from your Lord; so have fear of Allah and obey me
(Verse 47) That is, "Although no man has touched you, yet a son shall be born to you." It should be noted that the same word "kazalika, "meaning "so shall it be," had been used in response to Zacharias' prayer. It, therefore, carries the same sense here. Moreover, the whole context here corroborates the story that Mary was given the glad tidings of the birth of a son without any sexual intercourse, and the birth of Christ, in actual fact, took place in that unusual way. If a son was to be born to her in the normal known way, and if the event of the birth of Jesus had taker. place in a natural way, then the whole discourse starting from verse 33 and ending with verse 63 would become absolutely pointless. Not only that but all other references to the unusual birth of Jesus in the Qur'an would lose their significance and meaning. The Christians had made Jesus the Son of God and worthy of worship simply because of his unusual birth without a father and the Jews had accused Mary because they had witnessed that she had given birth to a child, though she was not married. Had it been otherwise, then the two groups could have been told plainly that the girl was married to such and such a man and that Jesus was from his seed. In that case, one fails to see the reason why such a long introduction and a series of arguments should have been necessary to remove all doubts about his miraculous birth. Then Jesus could have been called the son of a particular man, instead of being called "the son of Mary". The position of those people who, on the one hand, profess to believe the Holy Qur'an to be the Word of Allah and on the other hand try to prove that Jesus was born after the natural coming together of a husband and wife, really try to show that Allah is not able to express Himself as clearly as these people. (May God protect us from blasphemy!) 

Muhammad Asad Explanation:
Lit., "whose name shall be 'the Anointed' (al-masih)". The designation al-masih is the Arabicized form of the Aramaic meshiha which, in turn, is derived from the Hebrew mahsiah, "the anointed" - a term frequently applied in the Bible to the Hebrew kings, whose accession to power used to be consecrated by a touch with holy oil taken from the Temple. This anointment appears to have been so important a rite among the Hebrews that the term "the anointed" became in the course of time more or less synonymous with "king". Its application to Jesus may have been due to the widespread conviction among his contemporaries (references to which are found in several places in the Synoptic Gospels) that he was descended in direct - and obviously legitimate - line from the royal House of David. (It is to be noted that this could not have related to his mother's side, because Mary belonged to the priestly class descending from Aaron, and thus to the tribe of Levi, while David descended from the tribe of Judah.) Whatever may have been the historical circumstances, it is evident that the honorific "the Anointed" was applied to Jesus in his own lifetime. In the Greek version of the Gospels - which is undoubtedly based on a now-lost Aramaic original - this designation is correctly translated as Christos (a noun derived from the Greek verb chriein, "to anoint"): and since it is in this form - "the Christ" - that the designation al-masih has achieved currency in all Western languages, I am using it throughout in my translation.

Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Explanation:
These are glad tidings for Mary about the birth of a child without any role by a male. However, these glad tidings have been given by commencing them only with the word “command” so that the nature of the whole matter remains evident to her and a lady who is a virgin and an embodiment of chastity and modesty is, in the first place, even prepared to listen to what is intended to be said to her.

(His name will be Messiah) This is a title of Jesus (sws). There was a tradition among the Israelites according to which prophets and kings were declared so after a type of sacred oil was rubbed on their heads. For Jesus (sws), it was as if this declaration was made right after his birth in his cradle directly by the Almighty Himself. Thus, this title of Messiah became specific for him. In the Gospels, he is called the Messiah of God for this very reason.

(Jesus, son of Mary) Ie., he will not be the son of a father. In the opinion of Imām Amīn Aḥsan Iṣlāḥī by calling Jesus (sws) as son of Mary (sws), the Qur’ān has left no possibility for people who through weak interpretations wanted to alter its clear directives. His words are:
… If Jesus (sws) was the son of a father, then what was the hindrance for the Qur’ān to call him after his father’s name instead of calling him son of Mary (sws)? The Qur’ān could also have called him Messiah son of Joseph, but it did not. Why after all? (Amīn Aḥsan Iṣlāḥī, Tadabbur-i Qur’ān, vol. 2, 93)
(He shall be noble) The nobility mentioned is the same as the one which is mentioned earlier in relation to John (sws). Imām Amīn Aḥsan Iṣlāḥī has shed light on various aspects of this nobility thus:
… It is evident from the narration in Luke that it was at the age of twelve that Jesus (sws) gave instruction for the first time in the temple; however, even in this tender age such was the nature of the wisdom of his words, the eloquence of his speech and the grandeur of his style that the jurists, the Pharisees, the chief soothsayer (kāhin) and all the staff of the temple became dumbfounded. In utter astonishment, they would inquire after the identity of the person who would speak with such majesty as if he was speaking on behalf of God. When he started to preach in the settlements of Judea, it had a great impact all over. People would come to listen to him in multitudes. Both the jurists and the Pharisees were dumbstruck. In order to corner him and reduce his fame among the masses, they would pose different questions to him. Jesus (sws) would answer them in a few words in such a convincing manner that they would have nothing to say in return and would dare not open their mouths. Not much time elapsed before the fame of his nobility spread so much that the masses started to call him the king of Israel and would be full of praise for him. Matters reached such an extent that this issue came before the Roman authorities: Herodotus and Pilatus as a critical issue. However, they too in spite of their power and authority were awe-stricken before the greatness and fame of Jesus (sws).
The second aspect of the nobility of Jesus (sws) is that in spite of the fact that he was born without a father and in general circumstances, it cannot be imagined that a child who does not have a father seldom would be respected and honoured – the case of Jesus (sws) was just the opposite: since he was born as a result of the word kun, such was the nature of this miraculous command that from the very day he was born he was regarded as noble in the eyes of the masses to such an extent that no one was invested with it in those times. All his life he was surrounded by enemies who were after his life; however, no one could dare call him a child born out of wedlock. If a group from among the Jews were bold enough to make this allegation, it was in later times; no one had the courage to do it in his times. The glad tidings of this nobility were given to Mary (sws) together with the glad ridings of his birth for the reason that she is assured that not being born from a father will not affect the nobility of the child or that of her own.
The third aspect of this is that it negates the nonsensical incidents recorded in the Gospels that the Jews, God forbid, slapped Jesus (sws), made fun of him, abused him and spate on his face. Most of these absurd tales are incorrect, as we shall explain later. The enemies of the messengers of God do dare to disparage them and for this they are even granted an opportunity by the Almighty to some extent; however, they cannot exceed a certain limit; if a nation tries to cross it, the Almighty protects His messenger Himself and such wretched people are destroyed. (Amīn Aḥsan Iṣlāḥī, Tadabbur-i Qur’ān, vol. 2, 92)

(Surely, God alone is my Lord and yours also; hence, serve Him only. This alone is the straight path.”) The Qur’ān here has corrected the expression “my father” and “your father” which occurs at numerous places in the Gospels. This is what Jesus (sws) had actually said; however, since in Hebrew the word for father and God is the same (ie اب) and so is the word for son and servant (ie ابن), when the Christians invented the belief of divinity of Jesus (sws) they used this similarity of words to their advantage. 

Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:
To the human mind, Jesus’s birth remains the greatest of all miracles. According to God’s will, which is free of all restrictions, it is nothing out of the ordinary.
 
We are told that Mary qualified, through purification, devotion and sincere worship, to receive this honour and to be chosen for this great event. Here she is receiving the news for the first time through the angels in this world and in the life to come, and shall be: “The angels said: Mary, God sends you the happy news, through a word from Him, [of a son] whose name is the Christ, Jesus, son of Mary, honour among those who are favoured by God.’” It is a complete piece of news which tells of the whole affair. She receives the news in a word from God, namely the Christ, Jesus, son of Mary. In the construction of the sentence, the name “the Christ” is a substitute for the term “a word”. Yet, he is indeed the “Word”. What does this expression actually mean?
 
This and similar statements are of those matters which lie beyond our human perception. There is no way to determine what they precisely mean. They may be part of what God referred to in His earlier statement in the sūrah: “He it is Who has sent down to you the Book, containing verses which are clear and precise — and these are the essence of the Book — and others are allegorical. Those whose hearts have swerved from the truth pursue that part of it which is allegorical, seeking to create dissension and trying to give it an arbitrary meaning.” The matter, however, appears to be much simpler if our purpose is to understand this fact in such a way which keeps our hearts in direct contact with God and His perfect creation, His limitless ability and unrestricted will. It was God’s will that human life should start with the creation of Adam from clay. Whether He has made Adam directly from clay or He made from clay an earlier species which continued to develop until the humankind came into existence has no bearing whatsoever on the nature of the secret which remains known only to God. That is, the secret of life which was given to the first living creature, or given to Adam if he was created directly out of lifeless clay. Both are the same in relation to God’s work. Neither should be considered preferable to the other in explaining existence.
 
Where has this life come from, and how? It is certainly something different from dust and different from all the lifeless materials available on the earth. It is something extra, something different. It is something which brings about certain aspects which can never be found in dust, clay or in any lifeless material whatsoever. How has this secret come about? The fact that we do not know does not justify our denial of its existence or our indulging in petty arguments as those who believe only in matter do.
 
They pursue their arguments with a narrow-mindedness which cannot be respected by any man of reason, let alone any scientist. The fact remains that we do not know. All the attempts which we human beings have made with our limited means to determine the origin of life, or to initiate life from something which is lifeless, have achieved nothing.
 
We do not know, but God, Who has given life, knows. He tells us that life is the breathing of His spirit into something. He further tells us that giving it is achieved by a word from Him: “Be, and it is.” What is this spiritual breathing? How is the spirit blown into something lifeless so as to bring it into existence? This is a secret which remains incomprehensible to human reason. We cannot achieve that understanding because it is not part of our business. To know these answers does not benefit man in the discharge of his mission for which God has created him, namely, to be in charge of the earth. He will never need to create life from death. Hence, what is the value to him of knowing the nature of life, or the nature of the breathing of the Divine spirit, or how it has been given to Adam or to the first creature in the chain of living beings?
 
God tells us that the breathing of His spirit in Adam is what gave Adam his honourable place and distinction, even above the angels. It must be, then, something different from that mere “life” given to worms and germs. This leads us to consider man as a kind of creation with a separate existence. He has a special place in the general order of the universe which is not shared by any other creature. This, however, is not our immediate subject. We have only made this brief reference to it in order to warn the reader against any doubts which may arise as a result of arguments surrounding the advent of man.
 
What is important here is that God is telling us about the initiation of life. It does not matter that we remain unable to comprehend the nature of this secret or understand how life is breathed into something lifeless.
 
It was God’s will, after Adam came into existence in that direct way, to establish a certain procedure for the regeneration of human life. This procedure requires that a male and a female come together and that the female egg be fertilized by a male sperm for conception to take place. Neither the egg nor the sperm is lifeless.
 
People were familiar with this process for countless generations until God chose to make an exception to it in the case of an individual human being. He made his birth similar to the very first beginning, although not exactly the same. In this case, a female on her own receives the Divine spirit which initiates life, and the process is completed.
 
Was this breathing of the spirit what is described as the word? Or, was the word the line God’s will has taken? Or, does the word mean the command “be”, which may be taken as it is or may express that God’s will has chosen something in particular? Was the word Jesus, or is his existence derived from it? The pursuit of all such questions can only result in creating doubts. The only true conclusion is that God willed to initiate life in a manner which had no parallel. His unrestricted will accomplished such an initiation of life through a breathing of His spirit, the nature of which remains unknown to us while we understand its effects. There is no reason for us to understand its nature because such an understanding does not add to our ability to discharge our mission on earth, since to initiate life is not part of our appointed task. Viewed in this manner, the whole question becomes easy to understand and raises no doubts in our minds.
 
The angels gave Mary the happy news of a word from God whose name was the Christ, Jesus, son of Mary. That piece of news included his sex, name and lineage which revealed that he descended from his mother. It also included his qualities as well as his position with his Lord: “Honoured in this world and in the life to come, and shall be among those who are favoured by God.” As given by the angels, that piece of news refers to a miraculous aspect associated with his birth, “He shall speak to people in his cradle,” a glimpse of his future, “and as a grown man,” his character and the type of people to whom he belongs: “and shall be of the righteous.”

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 
وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.
