Rules of the Divine Court: The Day when the man will be asked to read Book of his own Deeds

In one of our previous posts, we shared a rule of the Divine Ourt, which will be established on the Day of Judgement/Resurrection about "A Day when man's scroll (Book of Deeds) will be produced to him." That post was based on the 13th verse of Surah 17. Al Israa. Today we share the continuing post, the 14th verse, in which it is being said that man will be asked to read his scroll or the Book of his Deeds.

اِقۡرَاۡ كِتٰبَك َؕ كَفٰى بِنَفۡسِكَ الۡيَوۡمَ عَلَيۡكَ حَسِيۡبًا ؕ‏ 

(17:14) "Read your scroll; this Day you suffice to take account of yourself."

No matter how much a man hoodwinks others in the world of his true ugly face hidden behind his artificial face or no matter how much he deceives others by obscuring his bad deeds, dishonesty and corruption, he shall be ready to face the consequences on the Day of Resurrection when his scroll, which being updated each and every second by the two guardian angels, will be presented to him, un edited so that his true personality is presented in the Divine Court for Divine Justice. That day, the man will know how even small things which perhaps he many not remember will be seen written in his scroll. It will be the day when his worldly wealth, position, status or even his so-called intercessors will be of no help to him and he shall stand alone to finally be punished for his bad deeds.

Let us now see how renowned Musim exegetes have interpreted this verse:

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir: 

(On that Day man will be informed of what (deeds) he sent forward, and what (deeds) he left behind. Nay! Man will be a witness against himself, though he may put forth his excuses.) Allah says:

(اقْرَأْ كَتَـبَكَ كَفَى بِنَفْسِكَ الْيَوْمَ عَلَيْكَ حَسِيبًا (It will be said to him): "Read your Book. You yourself are sufficient as a reckoner against you this Day.') meaning, you have not been treated unjustly and nothing has been recorded against you except what you have done, because you remember everything that you have done, and no one will forget anything that he did. Everyone will be able to read his Book, whether he is literate or illiterate.

[And he said;] "O son of Adam, your Book has been opened for you, and two noble angels have been entrusted to accompany you, one on your right and one on your left. 

(عَنِ الْيَمِينِ وَعَنِ الشِّمَالِ قَعِيدٌ one sitting on the right and one on the left. ) [50:17] (recording man's deeds)

The one who is on your right records your good deeds, and the one who is on your left records your bad deeds. `So do whatever you want, a lot or a little, until you die, then I will fold up your Book and tie it to your neck with you in your grave. Then when you come out on the Day of Resurrection, you will find the Book wide open, so read your Book.' By Allah, the One Who makes you accountable for your own deeds is being perfectly just.' These are some of the best words Al-Hasan ever spoke, may Allah have mercy on him.

Muhammad Asad Explanation:

The "record" and the subsequent "account" represent man's total comprehension, on Judgment Day, of all his past life (Razi). This allegory occurs in the Qur'an in many formulations, e.g., in 37:19 or 39:68, and perhaps most incisively in {50:22} - "now We have lifted from thee thy veil, and sharp is thy sight today!"

Yusuf Ali Explanation:

Our true accusers are our own deeds. Why not look to them instead of vainly prying into something superstitious which we call a book of fortune or a book of omens?

So, my dear brother and sister in Islam, know that we will be held accountable for every bad deed that we commit here in the world and will be rewarded for every good deed. So let our scroll weigh heavily because of our good and noble deeds rather than deeds that will lead us to the torment of Jahannam - Hell.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

Prophetic Supplication attributed to Prophet Nuh (Noah) in Qur'an

Prophets of Allah had been the chosen people who were kind, considerate and humane. While conveying the Divine Commandments to their people, they have always tried their level best that wrath of Allah may not befall on them for their rejection of the Divine Commandments. Yet many people disobeyed and were subjected to severe Heavenly punishment, as was witnessed during the great flood in the time of Prophet Nuh (Noah, may peace be upon him). 

Noah prayed that God not leave any of the disbelievers on the earth as they will lead His servants astray and beget only sinners and disbelievers.  Noah also prayed for forgiveness for himself, his parents, and whoever entered his house as a believer.  Noah’s prayer extended to all believers, asking for their forgiveness as well!

It appears from Noah’s prayer that, in his own times, evil had reached its final limit.  Misguided beliefs and thoughts had become so prevalent in society that any child born and brought up in this society would have gone astray.  When this stage had been reached, Noah’s people were destined to face nothing less than destruction by Noah’s flood.  They were drowned and sent to Hell for their evildoings.  They found no one to help them against God.

Herein under we share the supplication by Prophet Noah (may peace be upon him) which he made after the great flood was over and he then wanted all his people to be protected from any other torment. This supplication appears in the 28th verse of Surah 71. Nuh in Qur'an as under:

رَبِّ اغۡفِرۡلِىۡ وَلِـوَالِدَىَّ وَلِمَنۡ دَخَلَ بَيۡتِىَ مُؤۡمِنًا وَّلِلۡمُؤۡمِنِيۡنَ وَالۡمُؤۡمِنٰتِؕ وَلَا تَزِدِ الظّٰلِمِيۡنَ اِلَّا تَبَارًا

(71:28) My Lord, forgive me and my parents, and whoever enters my house as a believer, and forgive all believers, both men and women, and do not increase the wrong-doers in anything except perdition.”

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir: 

(رَّبِّ اغْفِرْ لِى وَلِوَلِدَىَّ وَلِمَن دَخَلَ بَيْتِىَ مُؤْمِناً My Lord! Forgive me, and my parents, and him who enters my home as a believer,) Ad-Dahhak said, "This means, my Masjid.'' However, there is no harm in understanding the Ayah according to its apparent meaning, which would be that he (Nuh) supplicated for every person who entered his house who was a believer. 

Then he said, (وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَـتِ and all the believing men and women.) He supplicated for all of the believing men and women, and that includes those of them who were living and those of them who were dead. For this reason, it is recommended to supplicate like this, in following the example of Nuh, and that which has been reported in the narrations and well-known, legislated supplications. 

Then, he said,(وَلاَ تَزِدِ الظَّـلِمِينَ إِلاَّ تَبَاراً And to the wrongdoers, grant You no increase but destruction!) As-Suddi said, "But destruction.' Mujahid said, "But loss.'' This means in both this life and in the Hereafter.This is the end of the Tafsir of Surat Nuh. And all praise and thanks are due to Allah.

Yusuf Ali Explanation:

Indeed, he prays for himself, his parents, his guests, and all who in earnest faith turn to Allah, in all ages and in all places. Praying for their forgiveness is also praying for the destruction of sin.

Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Explanation:

 It is evident from this that in this phase of declaring his acquittal from his people, Noah (sws) had proclaimed that whoever wants to protect himself from punishment should take refuge in his house before its arrival.

Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:

Noah made his sweeping appeal to God, and God answered his prayer, washing that evil of the face of the earth. Noah ended his appeal against the unbelievers by a request to God to increase their ruin.

His prayer that God forgives him his sins is an aspect of the good manners all prophets maintain when addressing God. Noah knows that he is only a human being appealing to God. He knows that no matter how diligent he is in his obedience and worship, he makes mistakes and remains short of the high standard believers should try to attain. He also realises the truth the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) later expressed when he said that no human being, not even a prophet, is admitted into heaven on the basis of his actions only, unless God bestows His grace on him. This appeal for forgiveness is exactly what he called upon his people to do, but they were too arrogant to take heed. Yet Noah, God's noble messenger who has untiringly sought to advocate God's message, seeks God's forgiveness at the moment he presents his account.

In this way does the surah conclude after having given us a bright picture of Noah's struggle, as contrasted with the unbelievers' stubborn rejection. It leaves us with feelings of love towards this great prophet, and admiration for his hard struggle. It strengthens our resolve to follow the same route no matter what hardship we have to endure and no matter what sacrifices we are called upon to make. It is the only route that ensures mankind attains the highest standard possible in their life on earth.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. Rules of the Divine Court: A Day when Man's scroll (book of Deeds) will be produced for him

Man is the most foolish of the species that the Lord of the worlds has ever been made. Although he is very intelligent in his worldly life, he is utterly foolish and naive when it comes to preparing himself for the Divine Court which will be established on the Day of Resurrection. He thinks that he is intelligent enough and will be able to tackle the affairs of the Divine Court and may even hoodwink the rules of the Divine Court or will be able to take shield from his worldly intercessors and get away from his bad deeds.

For such people, here comes a Divine Warning which cautions the man that every action of his being recorded by the two angel guardians and being inscribed in the scroll which will be compiled and produced for him to show him his dossier and asked" "Read your scroll; this Day you suffice to take account of yourself."

This caution is contained in the 13th verse of Surah 17 Al Israa (The Ascend - The Night Journey) given herein under

وَكُلَّ اِنۡسَانٍ اَلۡزَمۡنٰهُ طٰۤـئِرَهٗ فِىۡ عُنُقِهٖ​ؕ وَنُخۡرِجُ لَهٗ يَوۡمَ الۡقِيٰمَةِ كِتٰبًا يَّلۡقٰٮهُ مَنۡشُوۡرًا‏

(17:13) We have fastened every man's omen to his neck. On the Day of Resurrection, We shall produce for him his scroll in the shape of a wide-open book, (saying):

اِقۡرَاۡ كِتٰبَك َؕ كَفٰى بِنَفۡسِكَ الۡيَوۡمَ عَلَيۡكَ حَسِيۡبًا ؕ‏ 

(17:14) "Read your scroll; this Day you suffice to take account of yourself."

"We have fastened the augury of every man to his own neck": therefore, one does not need to take omens from a bird. : This is to remove the superstition of the disbelievers who used to take omens from birds etc., as if to say, "The causes and consequences of good fortune or bad fate exist in man's own person. He merits good fortune because of his own good conduct and good judgment, and likewise, suffers the consequences of evil fate by the lack of these". This was necessitated because foolish people always try to attribute their misfortunes to external causes, when in fact our fate depends on our own deeds, good or bad. If they probe into the causes, they will find that their fate was decided by their own good or bad qualities and judgments.

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir: 

(And We have fastened every man's Ta'irah (deeds) to his neck,) The word Ta'irah (lit. something that flies) refers to man's deeds which fly from him, as Ibn `Abbas, Mujahid and others said. It includes both good deeds and bad deeds, he will be forced to acknowledge them and will be rewarded or punished accordingly.

In this regard, Allah says elsewhere in Qur'an:

(So, whosoever does good equal to the weight of a speck of dust shall see it. And whosoever does evil equal to the weight of a speck of dust shall see it.) (99:7-8). 

((Remember) that the two receivers (recording angels) receive (each human being), one sitting on the right and one on the left (to note his or her actions). Not a word does he (or she) utter but there is a watcher by him ready (to record it).) (50:17-18)

(But verily, over you (are appointed angels in charge of mankind) to watch you, Kiraman (Honorable) Katibin - writing down (your deeds), they know all that you do.) (82:10-12)

(You are only being requited for what you used to do.) (52:16)

(Whosoever works evil, will have the recompense thereof.) (4:123)

The meaning is that the deeds of the sons of Adam are preserved, whether they are great or small, and they are recorded night and day, morning and evening.

(وَنُخْرِجُ لَهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَـمَةِ كِتَابًا يَلْقَـهُ مَنْشُوراً and on the Day of Resurrection, We shall bring out for him a Book which he will find wide open.) meaning, `We will collect all of his deeds for him in a Book which will be given to him on the Day of Resurrection, either in his right hand, if he is one of the blessed, or in his left hand if he is one of the wretched.'

(مَنْشُوراً wide open) means, it will be open for him and others to read all of his deeds, from the beginning of his life until the end.

(On that Day man will be informed of what (deeds) he sent forward, and what (deeds) he left behind. Nay! Man will be a witness against himself, though he may put forth his excuses.) (75:13-15) 

Allah then says: ((It will be said to him): اقْرَأْ كَتَـبَكَ كَفَى بِنَفْسِكَ الْيَوْمَ عَلَيْكَ حَسِيبًا  "Read your Book. You yourself are sufficient as a reckoner against you this Day.') meaning, you have not been treated unjustly and nothing has been recorded against you except what you have done, because you remember everything that you have done, and no one will forget anything that he did. Everyone will be able to read his Book, whether he is literate or illiterate.

(And We have fastened every man's Ta'irah (deeds) to his neck,) The neck is mentioned because it is a part of the body that has no counterpart, and when one is restrained by it, he has no escape. Ma`mar narrated from Qatadah, "His deeds,

Muhammad Asad Explanation:

The word ta'ir literally signifies a "bird" or, more properly, a "flying creature". Since the pre-Islamic Arabs often endeavoured to establish a good or bad omen and, in general, to foretell the future from the manner and direction in which birds would fly, the term ta'ir came to be tropically used in the sense of "fortune", both good and evil, or "destiny". (See in this connection surah {3}, verse [49], and surah {7}, verse [131].) It should, however, be borne in mind that the Qur'anic concept of "destiny" relates not so much to the external circumstances of and events in man's life as, rather, to the direction which this life takes in result of one's moral choices: in other words, it relates to man's spiritual fate - and this, in its turn, depends - as the Qur'an so often points out - on a person's inclinations, attitudes and conscious actions (including self-restraint from morally bad actions or, alternatively, a deliberate omission of good actions). Hence, man's spiritual fate depends on himself and is inseparably linked with the whole tenor of his personality; and since it is God who has made man responsible for his behaviour on earth, He speaks of Himself as having "tied every human being's destiny to his neck".

Yusuf Ali Explanation:

Tair, literally a bird, hence an omen, an evil omen, fate. Cf. xxxvi. 19. The Arabs, like the ancient Romans, sought to read the mysteries of human fate from the flight of birds. And many of us in our own day seek to read our future fortunes by similar superstitions. We read in the previous verse that there are Signs of Allah, but they are not meant to subserve the vulgar purpose of disclosing our future destiny in a worldly sense. 

(17:12) We have made night and day as two signs. We made the sign of the night devoid of light, and made the sign of the day radiant that you may seek the bounty of your Lord and know the computation of years and numbers. Thus, We have expounded everything in detail to keep everything distinct from the other.

They are meant for quite a lot of other purposes, as we have explained. Our real fate does not depend upon birds or omens or stars. It depends on our deeds; good or evil, and they hang round our necks.

 These deeds, good or evil, will be embodied in a scroll which will be quite open to us in the light of the Day of Judgment, however much we may affect to be ignorant of it now or waste our energies in prying into mysteries that do not concern us.

Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Explanation:

This expression means that whatever is going to befall a person will be a consequence of his deeds. Hence it is tied to his neck in this world. He reaches the presence of God after acquiring his Hell or Paradise in this very world. Nothing is going to happen to him in the Hereafter of which the seeds he does not sow in this world. Hence, instead of making haste in demanding punishment, he should reflect on the arrangement he has made to secure himself from it.

Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:

The Arabic phraseology of this verse provides a highly graphic description which uses the word, ‘bird’, in place of ‘action’, as used in the translated text. Thus, we have here a metaphor referring to what flies of a person’s actions and becomes tied around his neck, so that it never parts from him. Thus does the Qur’ān in graphically describing things in order to emphasize its point. A person’s actions do not leave him, and he cannot disown them. The same applies to the wide-open record of all his actions. Thus, whatever he has done in life is laid bare. He cannot hide, ignore or disown it. Both descriptions, of the bird denoting action and the record thrown open, produce a very strong effect that adds to the fears experienced on that very difficult day when nothing remains hidden. Everyone is told to read their own records because, “Sufficient it is for you today that your own soul should make out your account.” (Verse 14)

Let us then be prepared to face our scroll one day. and time is still now that our scroll is written well as is desired by our Lord, and not what the Evil tells us to do, for on Day of Resurrection the Evil will clearly absolve him of his part in derailing man in his worldly life and blame him for listening to him and following his tricks.

Believers!! Beware of the Rules of the Divine Court on the Day of Judgement

We have been sharing selected verses from Qur'an and their explanation so as to provide easy access to our readers to refer to selected subjects. We have even shared reference pages on selected subjects from within the selected verses to present a consolidated list of verses of Qur'an so that our readers can conveniently view and read verses of Qur'an on a desired subject.

Continuing with our efforts for selective verses on selected subjects, we add yet another reference page which is exclusively dedicated to verses about the Rule of Divine Court which will be established on the Day of Judgement. 

Herein under are the verses that depict the Day of Judgement:

• Fear the Day when no intercession will be accepted and no one will be ransomed (Surah 2. Al-Baqara:48)
• Fear the Day when Every Soul will Be Fully Repaid for his Deeds - good or evil (Surah 2. Al-Baqara:281)
• Beware of a Day when there will be no barter exchange of sins with worldly wealth  (Surah 10. Yunus:54)
• Divine Chastisement (Surah 13. Ar-Ra'd:11)
• Do not think Allah is heedless of the acts of the unjust (Surah 14. Ibraheem: 42)
• Blindness to Truth in this world will lead to Utter Blindness in the Hereafter  (Surah 17. Al Israa:72)
• Who shall be raised BLIND on the Day of Resurrection (Surah 21 Al-Anbiyaa (The Prophets):1)
• They Day every man who ever lived will be gathered before his Lord (Surah 36. Ya-Sin: 32)
• The day when even the mightiest will surrender (Surah 37. As-Saffat: 26)
• Whom would Allah procure freshness and joy on Day of Resurrection (Surah 76. Ad Dahr: 11)
• Beware of The Day of Matter Adequate (Surah 80. Abasa:37)

Herein under are the specific Divine Commands on how a man will be presented with his dossiers and how things will proceed to give rewards and awards to the good and the bad:

• A Day when Man's scroll (book of Deeds) will be produced for him (17. Surah Al Isra - also known as Surah Bani Israil: 13)
• The Day when every individual will be asked to read his scroll and be answerable himself with no one to plead for him (17. Surah Al Isra - also known as Surah Bani Israil: 14)
• The scale set on the Day will take into account deeds even if it be the weight of a grain of mustard seed (Surah 21. Al Anbiya: 47)
• The Day when nothing will avail, neither wealth nor offspring (Surah 26. Ash-Shu'ara': 88)
• The Day when hands will speak and feet shall bear witness to their evil deeds (Surah 36. Ya-Sin:65)
• The Evil Doers and the Righteous WILL NOT be Equated (Surah 45 Al Jathia:21)
• Everyone will be attended by one who will drive him on, and another who will bear witness (Surah 50 Qaaf:21) 
• The Day no order will change but no one will be wronged (Surah 50 Qaaf:29)
• Verily those who oppose Allah and His Messenger shall be brought low (Surah 58. Al-Mujadila:5) 
• Every deed will be presented even if these have forgotten it. Allah is a witness to everything. (Surah 58. Al-Mujadila:6)
• The Fate of those whose conduct sheet will be handed over in their Left Hand (Surah 69. Al-Haqqa: 25-37)
• Know when the girl-child buried alive shall be asked for what offence was she killed (Surah 81. At-Takwir:8-9)

These are clear warnings to the man who is busy in the goodies and entertainment of life and lewdness to which evil is always pulling them to such sinful acts. Beware Believers!! This life to too short to the life of the Hereafter. Those who will taste the Divine Chastisement will be the most miserable and condemned, who will stay in a place of brazing fire and boiling water besides chastisement of unimaginable bounds. Time is now, my brothers and sisters in Islam and pray we do not have to feel ashamed of when we are paraded and presented before the Lord.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Prophetic Supplication: What to say when waking up

The life of a Muslim is nothing but worship of Allah and seeking forgiveness at all the times for one never knows how long one has to live - may be one never sees the second for the angel of death may appear unannounced giving no time to say one's final supplications. Likewise, when one goes to sleep, he is not sure whether he would wake up alive in the morning or not, because many deaths occur during the night. 

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ had always asked his companions to be thankful to Allah when going to sleep and when waking up in the morning. We share a Hadith attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ which is to prayed when waking up in the morning, or even at other times. This should also be prayed at night before going to sleep as well. 

This Hadith is mentioned in Sunan Abi Dawud (Book # 43 General Behavior (Kitab Al-Adab) كتاب الأدب / Chapter # 110 What to say when waking up باب مَا يَقُولُ إِذَا أَصْبَحَ ) as Hadith number # 5077, given herein under:

حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ، وَوُهَيْبٌ، نَحْوَهُ عَنْ سُهَيْلٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عَائِشٍ، - وَقَالَ حَمَّادٌ عَنْ أَبِي عَيَّاشٍ، - أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏"‏ مَنْ قَالَ إِذَا أَصْبَحَ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَىْءٍ قَدِيرٌ كَانَ لَهُ عِدْلُ رَقَبَةٍ مِنْ وَلَدِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ وَكُتِبَ لَهُ عَشْرُ حَسَنَاتٍ وَحُطَّ عَنْهُ عَشْرُ سَيِّئَاتٍ وَرُفِعَ لَهُ عَشْرُ دَرَجَاتٍ وَكَانَ فِي حِرْزٍ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ حَتَّى يُمْسِيَ وَإِنْ قَالَهَا إِذَا أَمْسَى كَانَ لَهُ مِثْلُ ذَلِكَ حَتَّى يُصْبِحَ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ فِي حَدِيثِ حَمَّادٍ فَرَأَى رَجُلٌ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فِيمَا يَرَى النَّائِمُ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ أَبَا عَيَّاشٍ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْكَ بِكَذَا وَكَذَا قَالَ ‏"‏ صَدَقَ أَبُو عَيَّاشٍ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ رَوَاهُ إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ وَمُوسَى الزَّمْعِيُّ وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ عَنْ سُهَيْلٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ عَائِشٍ ‏.‏

Narrated AbuAyyash:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: If anyone says in the morning: "There is no god but Allah alone Who has no partner; to Him belong the dominions, to Him praise is due, and He is Omnipotent," he will have a reward equivalent to that for setting free a slave from among the descendants of Isma'il. He will have ten good deeds recorded for him, ten evil deeds deducted from him, he will be advanced ten degrees, and will be guarded from the Devil till the evening. If he says them in the evening, he will have a similar recompense till the morning.

Grade: Sahih (Al-Albani) 

Imagine the power this Dua embodies in itself that by just thanking Allah when waking up and praying the dua mentioned above, how much blessings one bags in, that is:

• Reward equivalent to that for setting free a slave from among the descendants of Isma'il. 
• He will have ten good deeds recorded for him, 
• Ten evil deeds deducted from him, 
• He will be advanced ten degrees, 
• And will be guarded from the Devil till the evening. 
• If he says them in the evening, he will have a similar recompense till the morning.

May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

The easiest way to memorize Al Qurʾān القرآن

Reciting and learning Al Qurʾān القرآن is central to faith of Muslims all over the world. However, there are many who go a step forward in memorizing Al Qurʾān and enlightening their souls for the word of Allah then resides into their hearts. There are a large number of Muslims around the world who have memorized the entire Al Qurʾān while many others long to do so.

However, memorizing the Al Qurʾān is not easy for believers spend months in memorizing it and one has to attend regular classes to undertake this gigantic task. However, for those who have yearning to memorize Al Qurʾān, but do not have access to teachers or are so committed in their lives that it becomes difficult for them to find time for formal education of memorizing Al Qurʾān.

I too am one of such people and have always been trying to memorize Al Qurʾān on my own which of course is a long process. For example, while I have memorized about twenty chapters / surahs, and recently I had been struggling to memorize Surah Ash Sharh, the ninety-fourth chapter of Al Qurʾān. But somehow, I simply couldn't. But then last night Allah opened a door for me for easy learning of Al Qurʾān. While waiting for my family in the car, I started surfing short videos on Facebook and came across a video in which a revert had shared his experience of how he is memorizing Al Qurʾān slowly and gradually.

So right away I applied his methodology and withing half an hour, I was able to memorize Surah As Sharh and can now recite it from my memory. I therefore decided to share my experience with my readers for maybe it helps them and some may follow the suit to memorize Al Qurʾān. Here we go:

• To memorize Al Qurʾān, one should start from the last surah / chapter and move on backward once the last one has been memorized. The last surahs of Al Qurʾān are shorter and easy to memorize.
• The first step is to memorize the first verse and when one can easily recite it from memory, one should move to the second verse. And once the second verse is memorized, recall both the first and second verse and repeat several times till perfectly memorized. Then move to the third one and then recite all three together. And slowly and gradually one is able to memorize the entire surah.

Now how to memorize the first verse?

• The first step is to listen to the first verse from a video / audio at least three times.
• The second step is to read from Al Qurʾān the same verse at least three times. Those who cannot read Arabic text, should get a copy of Qurʾān which has Romanized script.
• When one's tongue can easily recite the first verse, then one should close one's eyes and try to recall the verse from the memory. 
• It may require 3-4 repetitions of the three steps, and one will find that one has perfectly memorized the first verse.
• Then one can move on to the second verse, and gradually repeating the steps mentioned above, move on to memorize the entire chapter. 
• And it should not be difficult as Surah An Nas, the last chapter/surah, has only six verses.
• When the entire surah has been memorized, one must continue to recite/re-recite it throughout the day and also recite it in the daily prayers / salat in place of Surah 112. Al ikhlāṣ (the four-verse surah which is normally remembered by heart bay all Muslims) after Surah Al Fateha. By repeatedly reciting the memorized surah, one will solidify its remembering easily. 

Try this method, and I am sure you will find it perfectly easy to slowly and gradually build up your Al Qurʾān reservoir. My target today is to memorize Surah Al-Humazah, the 104th chapter with nine verses. Please which me well and I wish you well too in your quest to memorize Al Qurʾān.

The Eid ul Fitr Rituals - based on Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Alhamdolillah, the month of Ramadan has come to an end for many countries in the world. Those Muslims who had observed the month with religious zeal and fervor, kept all fasts during the month and recited Qur'an and attended Traweeh prayers, the siting of the new moon brings them a sense of satisfaction that they observed the month to the best of their abilities and now look forward for the festivities of Eid ul Fitr which takes place on the first day of the Islamic month of Shawaal.

Our best wishes to all believers on this happy day, a day they we all Muslims should celebrate for Allah has blessed us to be festive for we kept fast throughout the month of Ramadan only to please Allah, and we now look forward to the countless blessings Allah has promised us for Fasting is the only religious obligation which is solely between the servant and the Master.

Now let us have a quick look at the rituals of the Eid ul Fitr which commences early in the morning. But remember, before the day, we should have given our Zakatul Fitr to the poor and needy so that they too could join in the Eid festivities. These rituals are based on Sunnah of Muhammad ﷺ as these appear in various authentic Hadith books:

• It is mustahabb to recite takbeer during the night of Eid from sunset on the last day of Ramadaan until the imam comes to lead the prayer. The format of the takbeer is: Allaahu akbar, Allaahu akbar, laa ilaaha ill-Allah, Allaahu akbar, Allaahu akbar, wa Lillaahi’l-hamd (Allah is Most Great, Allah is Most Great, there is no god except Allah, Allaah is Most Great, Allah is Most Great, and all praise be to Allah). 
• It is Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that he would take a bath before going out for the Eid prayers.
• After taking the bath, it is recommended to wear new or the best pair of clothes one may have. There is a Hadith narrated by ‘Abd-Allah ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) who said that: `Umar bought a silk cloak from the market, took it to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Take it and adorn yourself with it during the `Id and when the delegations visit you." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) replied, "This dress is for those who have no share (in the Hereafter)." After a long period, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) sent to `Umar a cloak of silk brocade. `Umar came to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) with the cloak and said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! You said that this dress was for those who had no share (in the Hereafter); yet you have sent me this cloak." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said to him, "Sell it and fulfill your needs by it." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 948) That is the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) agreed with ‘Umar on the idea of adorning oneself for ‘Eid, but he denounced him for choosing this cloak because it was made of silk. 
• With regard to women, they should not wear beautiful clothes when they go out to the Eid prayer-place, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Let them go out looking decent” i.e., in regular clothes that are not fancy. Though, they should go out without wearing perfume and makeup. 
• Apply fragrance/perfume so that one should have a pleasing smell around him when he meets others and greets them.
• Then eat something before leaving the house. It was the Sunnah of Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) that he would not leave his house without eating a few dates. A hadith informs us that normally the number of dates were in odd numbers. Eating is an indication that one is not fasting on Eid day.

It is Narrated Anas bin Malik: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) never proceeded (for the prayer) on the Day of `Id-ul-Fitr unless he had eaten some dates. Anas also narrated: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to eat odd number of dates. (Sahi Bokhari: Hadith 953)

• It is recommended that one should go to the prayer by one route and return by another. 
• Jabir ibn ‘Abd-Allah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “On the day of ‘Eid, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to vary his route.” (Narrated by al-Bukhari, 986) It was said that the reason for that was so that the two routes would testify for him on the Day of Resurrection, for the earth will speak on the Day of Resurrection and say what was done on it, both good and bad. 
• It is generally recommended that one goes to a place where a large number of people have gathered for the Eid congregation. This ensures meeting with each other and joining hands together to begin the Eid festivities by thanking Allah for having brought us this blessed day. 
• After the Eid prayer has been offered, everyone should greet as many people as one can, congratulate them. Men should embrace each other three times after the Eid prayers. Some say that we should say to each other: "Taqabbala Allah minna wa minkum (May Allah accept (good deeds) from us and from you” or “‘Eid mubaarak” and other permissible expressions of congratulations.

Back home, the children await their elders for "Eidi", a monetary gift specific to Eid ul Fitr. I remember having received such Eidi in my childhood, not only from my parents but also from relatives visiting our home on Eid day. These treasured monetary gifts would make our day as we would go out, buy a toy or have a cold drink and buy sweets and other eateries being sold on make shift arrangements for the day.

On this day, ladies prepare special dishes, especially sweet dishes, which are devoured after the Eid prayers and are also served to guests coming in to convey their Eid greetings. Small girls, and big ones alike' buy bangles and wear specially stitched clothes with adorable laces and buttons. Prior to Eid day, they have their hands decorated with beautiful designs made with Henna.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

Note: When we mention God in our posts, we mean One True God, we call Allah in Islam, with no associates. Allah is the Sole Creator of all things, and that Allah is all-powerful and all-knowing. The minimum scale of Zakatul Fitr

In one of our previous posts, we talked of Zakatul Fitr: What it is, why, when and to whom it is to be given. In this post we will share a Hadith attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ about the minimum scale of Zakatul Fitr, based on a quantity of barely or dates, as these were the two most common means of subsistence in the times of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. 

This Hadith is mentioned in Sahih al-Bukhari (Book # 24 Obligatory Charity Tax (Zakat) كتاب الزكاة / Chapter # 70 Obligation of Sadaqat-ul-Fitr باب فَرْضِ صَدَقَةِ الْفِطْرِ ) as Hadith number # 1503 given herein under:

 

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ السَّكَنِ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَهْضَمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ نَافِعٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ قَالَ فَرَضَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم زَكَاةَ الْفِطْرِ صَاعًا مِنْ تَمْرٍ، أَوْ صَاعًا مِنْ شَعِيرٍ عَلَى الْعَبْدِ وَالْحُرِّ، وَالذَّكَرِ وَالأُنْثَى، وَالصَّغِيرِ وَالْكَبِيرِ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ، وَأَمَرَ بِهَا أَنْ تُؤَدَّى قَبْلَ خُرُوجِ النَّاسِ إِلَى الصَّلاَةِ‏.‏

Narrated by Ibn `Umar:

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) enjoined the payment of one Sa' of dates or one Sa' of barley as Zakat-ul-Fitr on every Muslim slave or free, male or female, young or old, and he ordered that it be paid before the people went out to offer the `Id prayer. 

(One Sa' = 3 Kilograms approx.)

The scale given above is the minimum scale. However, those who can afford to give more, they should do so to help the poor and make Eid day a day of festivity for them and their children.

Some interpreters of this hadith are of the opinion that Zakatul-Fitr be only given in kind of the two eatable barley and dates. But majority opines that cash can also be given in lieu equivalent to price of barley and dates as per the given scale.

It is better to give Zakatul-Fitr 2-3 days before Eid ul Fitr so that the receiepient of Zakatul-Fitr could buy clothes for family or buy other eatables as may be required by them. 

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.
