How can daughters lead parents to Jannah (Paradise) - Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Women in Islam assume a great significance in terms of respect and dignity. While many non-Muslims see Muslim women dressed in complete body covering in a lose over garment as a sign of oppression and violation of human rights, they fail to understand how much respect the Muslim women get from their menfolk both inside and outside of their household. Our last post was about "The higher pedestal for women as MOTHERS in Islam," as a premise to write more about status of women in Islam.

Today, we will talk of the blessings that daughters bring to their parents and how they would pave their way to Jannah / Paradise on the Day of judgement, as mentioned by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. This post is even applicable for parents today who dislike the birth of daughters and even are ashamed to break the news to their relatives that they have been blessed with a daughter.

Those interested in history would know that the era before advent of Islam in Arabia was the worst as far women were concerned. The girl babies used to be buried alive right upon their birth and the women in general were nothing but means of amusement and satisfaction of sex of their men. Even they paraded around the Kaabah during the annual rituals.

It was after the advent of Islam, that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ strictly disallowed burial of girls born to Muslim parents and later when Islam prevailed over the entire Arab, this unholy and gruesome practice was abolished altogether. Please refer to our earlier post "When the girl-child buried alive shall be asked for what offence was she killed" that explains these gruesome traditions and its abolishment.

Today we share a hadith attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as mentioned in This Hadith is mentioned in Sunan Ibn Majah / Book (33) of Etiquette كتاب الفتن / Chapter # 3 Honoring one's father and being kind to daughters /باب بِرِّ الْوَالِدِ وَالإِحْسَانِ إِلَى الْبَنَاتِ) as Hadith number # 3669. Besides references are also given to other hadiths that hinge on the same theme.

Uqbah bin Amir said, I heard the Messenger of Allah(ﷺ) say:
"Whoever has three daughters and is patient towards them, and feeds them, gives them to drink, and clothes them from his wealth; they will be a shield for him from the Fire on the Day of Resurrection.'"
Grade: Sahih (Darussalam)

Imagine when baby girls were deemed a source of shame and buried alive, the Prophet came to rectify this grave wrong and brought relief and solace to mothers who had to part within their baby girls they had taken pains to bear them in their wombs for nine months and then bid them farewell forever.

As for the number of daughters, someone asked the Prophet, what if they are two daughters only. He replied, “[He gets that reward,] even if they are [only] two. “Some of those present believed that had the Prophet been asked about only one daughter, he would have answered that the reward was applicable too. (Authenticated by Al-Albani)

In another hadith, Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (pbuh) said: If anyone has a female child, and does not bury her alive, or slight her, or prefer his male children to her, Allah will bring him into Paradise.

The last hadith is specially for parents who prefer sons over daughters. In fact, it should be the other way around. Daughters bring blessings to their parents and blessed are those parents who welcome the baby girls, bring them up well and marry them off. Such are the parents who can be rest assured of being shielded from the hell fire and entered into Jannah.

The higher pedestal for women as MOTHERS in Islam (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

Mothers have always been special in all religions and societies for their exclusive role in bearing and rearing their children - a commendable and matchless feat for which every child revers his / her mother for the rest of their lives. It will not be wrong to say that a mother is the heartbeat of every house. Without her, the heartbeat stops. In fact, a mother thinks more of her children and family rather than her own comfort and happiness.

Islam places special emphasis on showing respect and care to one's parents, especially the mother, who undergoes infinite struggles to bear a child in herself and undergoes tremendous ordeal during the childbirth by putting her life at stake.

"Your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him and that you be kind to parents. Whether one or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of contempt, nor repel them, but address them in terms of honor. And out of kindness, lower them the wing of humility and say, "My Lord! Bestow on them Your Mercy even as they cherished me in childhood." [Quran 17:23-24]

“We have commanded people to honour their parents. Their mothers bore them in hardship and delivered them in hardship. Their period of bearing and weaning is thirty months.” [Quran 46:15]

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ always respected women, especially mothers. A person came to Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and asked, “O Messenger of Allah! Who is most deserving of my fine treatment?” He (ﷺ) said, “Your mother” He again asked,” Who next?” “Your mother”, the Prophet (ﷺ) replied again. He asked, “Who next?” He (ﷺ) said again, “Your mother” He again asked, “Then who?” Thereupon he (ﷺ) said, “Then your father.” (Riyad as-Salihin 316)

The above said Hadith makes it immense clear that of both parents, mothers assume a higher status than a father does. Although this does not mean that a father should be less respected, it shows how a woman in her role as a mother be respected for her inherent closeness to her children.

In another oft quoted Hadith, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has been quoted as saying, ‘Paradise lies at the feet of your mother.’

This, however, does not mean that one should cling to the feet of her mother. What it implies is that one should treat one's mother with utmost respect and humility, and give her due honour she is worthy of.  Likewise, one should never raise one's voice in front of one's mother, even if she is harsh and cruel, for one cannot repay the pain she has undergone in bringing him to this world and sacrificing her own needs in favour of her children. One must respect and obey the parents, especially mothers, and execute what is one ordered to do by them with the only exception of something which Allah has forbidden

Let us, brothers and sisters in Islam, look after our parents, especially our mothers for those who do so, will secure a better place in Jannah, in sha Allah.
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. Beware! Allah is watching you very closely (Selected verses from Qur'an)

Man, aways performs well when being watched or supervised. Likewise, drivers drive very carefully when being aware of speed cameras on the road. Imagine the chaos if speed cameras were not there or if there were no checks and balances in the offices to judge the performance of the employees.

The same is true for the presence of Divine Surveillance.

Yes, our Creator, fully cognizant of our inborn habit of cheating, stealing and laziness, has an overwatch over every one of us. Those who please Him by following His path, whether being watched or otherwise, are the ones who will ultimately succeed. But those who disregard the Divine Surveillance and continue to violate Divine as well as man-made laws, should know that their every move is being watch and recorded and they will be asked and punished for the violations they commit.

This has been repeated at many a place in Qur'an and man has been cautioned to take stock of his actions lest his violative attitude makes him liable to be penalized. A violator may escape the justice of the world, but he will be held accountable for every single act of violation of Divine Laws and will be duly persecuted.

Herein under we share the very first verse of Surah 4. An Nisa (The Women) about the Divine Caution to abstain from every wrong and evil thing for they are ever been watched:

[Surah 4 An Nisa (The Women):1] O mankind, fear your Lord, Who created you of a single soul, and of the same created his mate, and from that pair spread countless men and women over the earth;1 fear that Allah in Whose name you demand your rights from one another, and abstain from violating relations between kinsfolk; note it well that Allah is watching you very closely.

It means that this world has not come into existence of its own accord; it has been created by God Who is the Creator as well as the Lord of all. It is therefore unseemly for a person to regard this world to be a wandering herd which has no shepherd to attend to it and make it a target of his oppression and tyranny; on the contrary, it is his obligation to adhere to justice and clemency in its affairs; for he should know that God is very powerful, mighty and just. Those who oppress His creation will not escape His anger and wrath. He is watching over everything.

Allah calls Himself Ar-Raqeeb (الرقيب) — The Watchful, The All-Observing, The Witness — on three occasions in the Quran. Ar-Raqeeb is the One Who sees what is hidden in the hearts and He is the One Who charges your soul for what it has earned. He is the All-and-Ever-Watchful, observing everyone’s actions, thoughts, and feelings. Ar-Raqeeb is also The Controller; preserving and organizing the affairs of creation with perfect planning!
A beautiful example of belief in Ar-Raqeeb. Narrated `Abdullah ibn Zayd ibn Aslam, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: When I was accompanying `Umar ibn al-Khattab on his patrol of Madinah at night, he felt tired, so he leant against a wall. It was the middle of the night, and (we heard) a woman say to her daughter, “O my daughter, get up and mix that milk with some water.” The girl said, “O Mother, did you not hear the decree of Amir al-Mu’minin (chief of the believers) today?” The mother said, “What was that?” The girl said, “He ordered someone to announce in a loud voice that milk should not be mixed with water.” The mother said, “Get up and mix the milk with water; you are in a place where `Umar cannot see you.” The girl told her mother, “I cannot obey Him (Allah) in public and disobey him in private.” [Sifat al-Safwah and Wafiyat al-A’yan and cited by Ibn al-Jawzi in Ahkam Al-Nisa’]

Imagine how a poor girl understood the meaning of everyone being watched by Allah, and we continue to commit sins of every nature blatantly, from hurting people, hiding truth so that it does not against our favour and harming others by injustice or supporting those who do injustice.

Now let us take an unbiased personal appraisal and see how many times a day we violate the Divine Commandments and shrug off the consequences. If everyone inculcates just this small part of the complete verse: " إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَلَيْكُمْ رَقِيبًا note it well that Allah is watching you very closely" how much change can come into our inner and outer behaviour and mindset. For this, always listen to your conscious, if it rings a bell, stop whatever you intend or about to do, for our conscious is part of the mechanism installed in our body to prevent us from doing something not allowed.

So, my brothers and sisters, let us be cognizant of the Divine Eye and let us keep ourselves away from actions and thoughts that may be observed and recorded for which we will be questioned on the Day of Judgement. May Allah forgive us all. Ameen
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. An effort has been made to gather explanation / exegesis of the surahs of the Qur'ān from authentic sources and then present a least possible condensed explanation of the surah. In that the exegesis of the chapters of the Quran is mainly based on the "Tafhim al-Qur'an - The Meaning of the Qur'an" by one of the most enlightened scholars of the Muslim World Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi.
In order to augment and add more explanation as already provided, additional input has been interjected from the following sources:
  • Tafsir Ibn Khatir
  • Muhammad Asad Translation
  • Yusuf Ali Translation
  • Translation Javed Ahmad Ghamidi / Al Mawrid

Hadiths of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ related to Muslim Women

Generally, the hijab observing Muslim women are sympathized by the non-Muslims and branded as symbol of oppression and cruelty. But if one tries to read Islamic history, both prior to the advent of Islam and thereafter, the critics of Hijab wearing women will be bewildered to know the status Islam accords to women in Islam.

Prior to Islam, baby girls used to be buried right after their birth and the women folk were treated as a symbol of sex and nothing else. They were paraded naked around the Kaabah and put under extreme repression by the pagans of Makkah. The slave girls were treated worse than humans like the male slave. This was the time when two earlier Divine religions, that is Jewism and Christianity, were thriving both in Arab lands and beyond. Yet the Jew and Christian women were deprived of rights of inheritance and were also subject to repression and treated not at par with men.

In such deploring conditions meted to women, Islam came to their salvation and there are umpteen number of verses in Qur'an that address the rights of women and restored their status as respectable beings. There are numerous Islamic laws that spell out share of women in the share of property of inheritance and even that from their husbands. Many non-Muslims may now recall that this status was given to women only recently in the history lane. This speaks of void in their religious books and their indifferent attitude towards their women. In fact, Qur'an completes the inadequacies which were not addressed in the earlier scriptures. That is why it is said that Qur'an completes the last stage of completion of Divine Commandments.

Even the women were granted protection against pre-Islamic period of divorce and also granted the right to seek divorce from their husbands. A complete chapter of Qur'an was revealed as an answer to the redress of grievance by a woman, besides a complete chapter named after women and explains their rights and obligations.

Please read our previous posts on issues related to women, as mentioned in Qur'an:
While Qur'an speaks extensively about women, there are number of Hadiths attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ about status, respect of Muslim women, in addition to many cautions so that they do not deviate from their stated role and importance as enunciated in Qur'an. This post is primarily means to share these Hadiths.

We have just started developing this page and will add Hadiths related to women in Islam in time. Please do follow our later posts. All these Hadiths will clarify the mis norm being spread about Muslim women by non-Muslims on social media to belittle Islam and its "treatment " of women.

Some of the Hadiths about women / daughters are as under:
This is just the beginning. We will add explanation of the Hadiths mentioned above and more to these in time, In Sha Allah.

Etiquettes of Greeting (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

The word "Islam" literary means peace. That is religion is embodiment of peace and Allah commands its servants not only to be peaceful but also exhibits peace to others so that entire surroundings beam with a feeling of tranquility, love for others in the overall ambit of peace. That is another thing that the media in general portrays an otherwise face of Islam in the garb of Islamophobia and terrorism.

We have shared many a reference s from Qur'an and Hadiths attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that ask believers to exhibit peace by respecting and loving others. And how do we do it? The very greeting of Muslims "As-salām u ʿalaykum (ٱلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ)", instead of mere good morning or simply Hi, means peace be upon you. The complete phrase is as-salāmu ʿalaykum wa-raḥmatu -llāhi wa-barakātuhū (ٱلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ ٱللَّٰهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ, that is 'Peace be upon you, as well as the mercy of God and His blessings'.

And once someone has been greeted, he is bound to reply: Wa ʿalaykumu as-salam (وَعَلَيْكُم ٱلسَّلَامُ), that is "peace be upon you - too."  Rather it is much better to pronounce the complete return greeting as "Wa ʿalaykumu as-salāmu wa-raḥmatu -llāhi wa-barakātuhū" (وَعَلَيْكُمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ وَرَحْمَةُ ٱللَّٰهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ, "And upon you be peace, as well as the mercy of God and his blessings").

Now who should take the lead to greet another person? The etiquette is mentioned in a Hadith as mentioned in Sahi al-Bukhārī  (Book 79 - Asking Permission /  كتاب الاستئذان / Chapter 78: The younger person should greet the older one / باب  تَسْلِيمِ الصَّغِيرِ عَلَى الْكَبِيرِ) as Hadith 6234, given herein under:

Narrated by Abu Huraira:
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "The younger person should greet the older one, and the walking person should greet the sitting one, and the small number of persons should greet the large number of persons."

The Prophetic explanation of the etiquette of greeting makes it simple and prevents any doubt in the mind of anyone as to how to greet the other. We should try to emulate the Prophetic guidance and greet others, even if the person greeted upon is a non-Muslim, for it would yield a positive effect on the recipient. In fact, the term "ٱلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ ٱللَّٰهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ" has become so common around the world that even many non-Muslims too greet the Muslims with this Islamic phrase.
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable.
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

Reward of remembering 99 Attributes of Allah (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

Allah, the Creator of the entire universe can be remembered by His 99 attributes. In fact, each of His attribute is unique and explains one particular quality of our Creator, which no one else can share or qualify to possess, even the best of the prophets and messengers that Allah specially chose to convey His Divine wisdom to the mankind.

While about 35 attributes of Allah have been mentioned directly by Allah in the Qur'an, the remaining attributes have been derived from various verses from Qur'an and qualities of Allah by Muslim scholars over a period of time. These attributes are generally used while making a supplication and selecting a particular attribute which goes by the need of a supplicatory. For example, if someone seeks repentance and forgiveness, he supplicates using attribute Al-Ghafur (الغفور) - The Forgiving, The Pardoner and Ar Rahim (الرحيم) - The Most Merciful.

Our readers may visit our post: 99 Attributes of Allah, to get to know the entire list of 99 Attributes of Allah and their meaning/explanation.

Even otherwise, many Muslim scholars believe that reciting the 99 Names can bring peace and spiritual fulfillment, while also helping to build a stronger relationship between believers and their creator. Therefore, it is important for Muslims to understand their meanings and significance when engaging in prayer or contemplation. And this is the very theme of a Hadith attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is mentioned in This Hadith is mentioned in Sahi al-Bukhārī  (Book 80 - Invocations /  كتاب الدعوات / Chapter 68: Allah has one hundred Names less one / باب لِلَّهِ مِائَةُ اسْمٍ غَيْرَ وَاحِدٍ ) as Hadith 6410, given herein under:

Narrated by Abu Huraira: Allah has ninety-nine Names, i.e., one hundred minus one, and whoever believes in their meanings and acts accordingly, will enter Paradise; and Allah is witr (one) and loves 'the witr' (i.e., odd numbers).

Thus, by reflecting on the attributes attributed to Allah through these Names, we, our dear brothers and sisters in Islam, can draw closer to Him and further appreciate His mercy, love and wisdom.

In fact, these 99 Attributes of Allah provide us with insights into Allah’s divine qualities and how these effect our lives. And as advised by the Prophet in above quoted Hadith, one should not only remember these 99 attributes, but also understand the meaning of each attribute. This would solidify our faith in Allah by knowing His immense grasp over our lives which is exhibited by each of His attributes.
May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Argue not with the People of the Book except in the fairest manner

The purpose of the Divine religions has always been to put the people, who had otherwise directionless, to a straight path as envisioned for them by their Creator: The One and Only One True God, we call Allah in Islam. However, instead of keeping focused on the Divine framework of unity, there seems to be complete disharmony among the people of the Book. And every effort is made by the priests, pastors and Imams to prove their own view point right while outrightly negating what others have to say.

This disharmony among the people of the Book often leads to heated arguments which further widen the gap rather coming closer to each other. It is in this regard we share a few verses from Surah 29. Al Ankabut (The Spider) which instruct the Muslim scholars and Imams not to get into arguments with the people of the Book except in the fairest manner so as not to vent animosity between different Divine religions.

However, before we do that, let us understand the difference between a debate and an argument:
A debate is formal, deliberate, executed according to an agreed upon set of rules, and a decision is made at the end of the debate to ascertain WHAT is right, based on rational thinking by well-read scholars. Debates use arguments, but an argument itself is informal, usually unplanned, can get heated, and doesn't always end in a decision. The arguments on the other hand are generally a display of emotional outburst of one's conviction and those involved in an argument tend to press upon their focused stand to press upon WHO is right. Those who get into argumentation about religion generally have a shallow language about theirs as well as others religions and their only intention is to prove their viewpoint right rather than striving WHAT is right, for they are not equipped with requisite knowledge to do that.

Therefore, when it comes to discussion on religions, the stress should be on kindness and tact and, hence, on the use of reason alone with adherents of other creeds, fully in tune with the basic, categorical injunction, "There shall be no coercion in matters of faith."

(29:46) Argue not with the People of the Book except in the fairest manner, unless it be those of them that are utterly unjust. Say to them: “We believe in what was revealed to us and what was revealed to you. One is our God and your God; and we are those who submit ourselves to Him.”
That is, "The discussion should be conducted rationally, in a civilized and decent language, so that the ideas of the other person may be reformed. The preacher's chief aim should be to appeal to the addressee's heart, convey the truth to him and bring him to the right path. He should not fight like a wrestler whose only object is to defeat his opponent. He should rather conduct himself like a physician who is ever cautious not to cause the patient's ailment to worsen by any of his own mistakes, and tries to cure him with the least possible trouble. This instruction bas been given here especially in connection with the conduct of a discussion with the people of the Book, but is a general instruction pertaining to the preaching of the religion and it has been given at several places in the Qur'an. For example, "O Prophet, invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and excellent admonition and discuss things with the people in the best manner." (AnNahl: 125). "O Prophet, goodness and evil are not alike. Repel evil with what is best. You will see that he. with whom you had enmity, has become your closest friend. ' (Ha Mim As-Sajdah: 34). "O Prophet, repel evil with what is best: We are fully aware of what they utter against you." (Al-Mu'minun: 96) "O Prophet, adopt the way of leniency and forbearance; enjoin what is good and avoid useless discussions with the ignorant people. If Satan ever excites you to anger, seek refuge in Allah."

(unless it be those of them that are utterly unjust) That is, "With those who adopt an attitude of wickedness a different attitude may also be adopted according to the nature and extent of their wickedness. In other words, one cannot, and should not adopt a soft and gentle attitude towards all sorts of people under all circumstances at all time, which might be mistaken for the weakness and meekness of the inviter to the Truth. Islam does teach its followers to be polite, gentle and reasonable, but it does not teach them to be unduly humble and meek so that they are not taken for granted by every cruel and wicked person."

(Say to them: “We believe in what was revealed to us and what was revealed to you. One is our God and your God; and we are those who submit) In these sentences Allah Himself has provided guidance to the best method of discussion, which the inviters to the Truth should adopt. The method is this: "Do not make the error or deviation of the other person the basis and starting point of the discussion, but begin the discussion with those points of truth and justice which are common between you and your opponent. That is, the discussion should start' from the points of agreement and not from the points of difference. Then, arguing froth the agreed points, the addressee should be made to understand that, in the matter of the things in which you differ, your stand is in conformity with the agreed points whereas his stand is contradictory to them

In this connection, one should bear in mind the fact that the people of the Book did not deny Revelation, Prophethood and Tauhid, like the polytheists of Arabia, but believed in these realities just like the Muslims. After agreement on these basic things, the main thing that could become the basis of difference Between them could be that the Muslim would not believe in the Divine Scriptures sent down to them and would invite them to believe in the Divine Book sent down to themselves, and would declare them disbelievers if they did not believe in it. This would have been a strong basis of their conflict. But the Muslims had a different stand. They believed as true all those Books that were with the people of the Book, and then also had believed in the Revelation that had been sent down to the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Allah's peace be upon him). After this it was for the people of the Book to tell the rational ground for which they believed in one Book sent by Allah and rejected the other. That is why Allah here has instructed the Muslims that whenever they have to deal with the people of the Book, they should first of all present before them this very point of view in a positive manner. Say to them: "We believe in the same God in Whom you believe and we are obedient to Him. We have submitted ourselves to all those Commands and injunctions and teachings that have come from Him, whether they were sent down to you, or to us. We are obedient servants of God and not of a country or a community or a race, that we should submit to God's Command when it is sent down in one place and reject it when it is sent down in another place. This thing has been repeated at several places in the Qur'an and particularly in relation to the people of the Book, it has been presented forcefully. For this, see AI-Baqarah: 4, 136, 177, 285; Al-i-`Imran: 84; An-Nisa': 136, 150 to 152, 162 to 164; Ash Shu'araa: 13.

Ibn e Kathir explains:
That while Arguing with the People of the Book and wanting to know about religion from them should argue with them in a manner that is better, as this will be more effective.

For Allah says: (Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and fair preaching...) (16:125) And Allah said to Musa and Harun when he sent them to Pharoah: (And speak to him mildly, perhaps he may accept admonition or fear.) (20:44)

(and say (to them): "We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you;) means, `if they tell you something which you do not know to be true or false, say to them: We do not hasten to say it is a lie, because it may be true, and we do not hasten to say it is true because it may be false. We believe in it in general, under the condition that it has been revealed and has not been altered or deliberately misinterpreted.'

Imam Al-Bukhari, may Allah have mercy on him, recorded that Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, said, "The People of the Book used to read the Tawrah in Hebrew and explain it in Arabic to the Muslims. The Messenger of Allah said: (Do not believe the People of the Book and do not deny them. Say: "We believe in Allah and what has been revealed to us and what has been revealed to you. Our God and your God is One, and to Him we have submitted.'')'' This Hadith was narrated only by Al-Bukhari. Al-Bukhari recorded that Ibn `Abbas said: "How can you ask the People of the Book about anything, when your Book that was revealed to the Messenger of Allah is more recent, you read it pure and uncontaminated, it tells you that the People of the Book altered and changed the Book, that they write the Book with their own hands and then say, `This is from Allah,' to purchace with it a small price Should not the knowledge that you have, prevent you from asking them No, by Allah, we have never seen any of them asking you about what was sent down to you.'' Al-Bukhari recorded that Humayd bin `Abdur-Rahman heard Mu`awiyah talking to a group of Quraysh in Al-Madinah. He mentioned Ka`b Al-Ahbar, and said: "He was one of the most truthful of those who narrated from the People of the Book, even though we found that some of what he said might be lies.'' I say, this means that some of what he said could be classified linguistically as lies, but he did not intend to lie, because he was narrating from manuscripts which he thought were good, but they contained fabricated material, because they did not have people who were so conscientious in memorizing the Scriptures by heart as the people of this great Ummah.

Yusuf Ali is of the opinion that mere disputations are futile. In order to achieve our purpose as true standard-bearers for Allah, we shall have to find true common grounds of belief, as stated in the latter part of this verse, and also to show by our urbanity, kindness, sincerity, truth, and genuine anxiety, for the good of others, that we are not cranks or merely seeking selfish or questionable aims. However, those who are deliberately trying to wrong or injure others will have to be treated firmly, as we are guardians of each other. With them there is little question of finding common ground or exercising patience, until the injury is prevented or stopped.

Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Explanation:
This is explained ahead: the first common things should be presented to them. After that, their attention should be directed to the consequences and implications of the common things that can become a cause of dispute. These should be presented in decent and polite language, with cogent arguments and with the spirit of earnestly making them understand a point. Instead of a dominating style, wisdom and sagacity should be held on to. This is because this style does not hurt the ego of a person and if the addressee is an upright person, he is even prepared to reflect on what is presented.

If the people of the Book are mischievous, indulge in baseless rhetoric and engage in debates meant to humiliate others, then in other instances in the Qur’ān, it is directed that instead of engaging with such people, one should ignore them. It is not proper for the preacher of the truth to respond to an allegation by a counter allegation or answer an insult by a bigger insult. The right attitude in such a case is to say salām and go one’s way.

(Tell them: We believe in what is revealed to us and that also which had been revealed to you.) The implication is that they are not inflicted with any bias or prejudice. They accept the truth because it is the truth and attest to it wherever they find it. Their book and the book of their addresses do not primarily differ from one another. Both have the same source and origin and both call to the same religion. Hence if their addressees also reflect while disregarding prejudices, they too will say like them that they believe in what is revealed to them and also in what is revealed to their addressees.

(Our God and your God is the same and we are obedient to Him alone.)  Ie., since God is one, they are not asking their addressees to profess faith in some other god; rather they are only asking them to believe in Him and like them solely obey Him by devoting themselves to Him and submitting to Him and leave aside

Having advised the believers how to deal with the people of the Book, the next verse tells that those who do not believe in Qur'an are utter unbelievers:

(29:47) (O Prophet), thus have We bestowed the Book on you.84 So those on whom We had bestowed the Book before believe in it, and of these (Arabs) too a good many believe in it. It is none but the utter unbelievers who deny Our Signs.

((O Prophet), thus have We bestowed the Book on you) This can have two meanings:
  • (1) "Just as We had sent down the Books to the former Prophets, so We have sent down this Book to you"; and
  • (2) "We have sent down this Book with the teaching that it should be believed in not by rejecting Our former Books but by affirming faith in all of them. "
(So those on whom We had bestowed the Book before believe in it) The context itself shows that this does not imply all the people of the Book but only those who were blessed with the right understanding and the knowledge of the Divine Scriptures, and were "the people of the Book ' in the we sense. When this last Book of Allah came before them, confirming His earlier Books, they did not show any stubbornness or obstinacy but accepted it sincerely as they had accepted the previous Books.

(and of these (Arabs) too a good many believe in it) "These people": the people of Arabia. What it means to say is: The truth-loving people, whether they already possess a Divine Book or do not possess any, are affirming faith in it everywhere.

(It is none but the utter unbelievers who deny Our Signs.) Here, "the disbelievers" imply those people who are not prepared to give up their prejudices and accept the truth, or those who reject the truth because they do not want their lusts and their unbridled freedom to be subjected to restrictions.

So, my brothers and sisters in Islam, while Da'wah (calling others to Islam) is the duty of every Muslim, care must be taken that Da'wah be organized with Muslims who have extensive study of other Divine Books as well as Qur'an and Sunnah. If this is done, one may never get into arguments with anyone and will lead a healthy discussion about inter faith harmony and removal of doubts. But even if the opposing sides ridicule Allah, Islam, Qur'an and the very personality of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, one should deal the situation firmly so that the opposing side should not prevail upon the Da'wah team for being otherwise courteous and friendly.  It is better to disengage from such people who instead of a healthy discussion, ridicule and make mockery of Islam, the same way Pagan of Makkah did. To such people, one should simply recite the Surah 109. Al-Kafirun to part ways happy clinging to own faith and mindset.
