Da'wah - The Invitation to Non-Muslims to Islam (Reference Page)

Islam is the final Divine religion which was introduced for the entire mankind through Divine revelation to last of the prophets, Muhammad ﷺ. Since Islam is the final Divine Decree, there will be no more religions or prophets till the "Day of Resurrection" of the dead (Yawm al-Qiyāmah), followed by a "Day of Judgment" (Yawm ad-Din) when all human beings who have ever lived will be held accountable for their deeds by being judged by God. 

To fill in the void and to continue to extend the invitation of Islam to the mankind, Da'wah has become the religious obligation for each Muslim to first understand the Islam in depth and then extend the invitation to the non Muslims.

“And who is better in speech than he who [says: ‘My Lord is Allah (believes in His Oneness),’ and then stands firm (acts upon His Order), and] invites (men) to Allah’s (Islamic Monotheism), and does righteous deeds, and says: ‘I am one of the Muslims.’”[Fussilat 41:33]

In one of our earlier posts on Da'wah and calling people to do good and refrain from sins, we had quoted the 104th verse of Surah 3. Al Imran:

“Let there arise out of you a group of people inviting to all that is good (Islam), enjoining Al-Ma‘ruf (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do) and forbidding Al-Munkar (polytheism and disbelief and all that Islam has forbidden). And it is they who are the successful'' [Aal 'Imran 3:104] 

This explains why we as Muslims need to invite others to Islam for Islam is the purest and unadulterated religion left out of the previous Divine religions as lot of additions have been made by humans to suit the wishes of the pastors and religious scholars. Therefore we as Muslims must present to the world Islam and wrinkle out many alterations and misconceptions about Islam and also the adulterations that have taken place in other religions.

However it should be borne in mind that discussion on religions is a delicate issue and any lose language may hurt the followers of other faiths and leave a bad impression of Islam. Therefore those engaged in Da'wah must have very good knowledge and understanding of Islam, besides having patience, forbearance, gentleness and kindness. 

And it is for this reason that Allah had directed the Prophet of Islam, Mohammad ﷺ to:

“Invite (mankind, O Muhammad) to the way of your Lord (i.e. Islam) with wisdom (i.e. with the Divine Revelation and the Quran) and fair preaching, and argue with them in a way that is better. Truly, your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His path, and He is the Best Aware of those who are guided.” [al-Nahl 16:125]

Before we share links to our posts on Da'wah, let us in few words understand what Da'wah is and how it should be extended:

Da'wah in Islam refers to the act of inviting others to understand and embrace Islam. The Arabic word da'wah (الدعوة) literally means "invitation" or "call," and in a religious context, it means calling people to Allah — sharing the message of Islam with both Muslims and non-Muslims.

Purpose of Da'wah
  • To spread the message of Islam — belief in one God (Allah), following the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and living a righteous life.
  • To encourage good and forbid evil (amr bil ma'ruf wa nahi 'anil munkar).
  • To help others find truth and peace through Islam.
Who Should Do Da'wah?
  • Every Muslim has a responsibility to do da'wah in some capacity. 
  • The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “Convey from me, even if it is one verse.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
How Should Da'wah Be Done?
  • With Wisdom and Good Character:  
    • Quran (Surah An-Nahl 16:125): 
    • "Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has strayed from His way, and He is most knowing of who is [rightly] guided."
    • This is one of the clearest commands to do Da’wah with wisdom, gentleness, and good manners.
  • Lead by Example: Actions speak louder than words. Demonstrate Islam through honesty, kindness, humility, and patience. The Prophet ﷺ was described in the Quran as having excellent character (Quran 68:4): "And you are truly ˹a man˺ of outstanding character".
  • Speak Clearly and Truthfully
    • Avoid exaggerations or pressure.
    • Use authentic Islamic sources (Quran and Sunnah)
    • Answer questions honestly, and if you don’t know, say so respectfully.
  • Know Your Audience
    • Understand the beliefs, concerns, or misunderstandings people might have.
    • Tailor your message in a way that’s relevant and respectful to the listener’s background.
  • Avoid Arguing or Forcing
    • Quran (2:256): "There is no compulsion in religion..."
    • The goal is not to "win" an argument, but to convey the truth with compassion.
    • Many non Muslims blame Islam that it spread by the sword. Had it been so, then during the 800 years long rule of Muslims in Spaon, there would have been no Christian left in Spain. 
  • Be Patient and Sincere: Change takes time, and guidance is ultimately from Allah. The aim of those involved in Da'wah should be to convey, not convert.
Methods of Da'wah Today
  • Personal conversations.
  • Social media, podcasts, blogs.
  • Community events and open mosque days.
  • Charity work and service projects.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ faced many challenges in calling people to Islam but remained steadfast, kind, and patient. Muslims are encouraged to follow his example and remember that success in da'wah is not in numbers, but in sincerity and effort.

May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 
وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

Let there be a group to invite people to enjoin doing that is right and forbid doing that is wrong

Islam is a very simple, yet very practical and wholesome religion and it is for this purpose it is called Deen, not merely a religion. That means that every Muslim should be embodiment of the entire Divine commandments contained in Qur'an, augmented by Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad and this should radiate from his character and his dealing with others in life. 

And one of the most sacred duty of every Muslim is to invite people to enjoin doing that is right and forbid them from doing what is wrong. This not an easy thing to do for lone voices are normally lost in the loudness of the crowd. And if this duty is entrusted to a well read group of people, the results would not only be encouraging for a combined voice is always heeded to. It is just like Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) who felt afraid of facing the Pharaoh and asked God to allow his brother to accompany him as moral support.

The same has been Divinely asked in Qur'an for Muslims to form groups so that they are heard and can explain to the people the rewards of doing good and otherwise of doing what is wrong. Let us read the 104th verse of Surah 3 Al-i'Imran:

وَلۡتَكُنۡ مِّنۡكُمۡ اُمَّةٌ يَّدۡعُوۡنَ اِلَى الۡخَيۡرِ وَيَاۡمُرُوۡنَ بِالۡمَعۡرُوۡفِ وَيَنۡهَوۡنَ عَنِ الۡمُنۡكَرِ​ؕ وَاُولٰٓـئِكَ هُمُ الۡمُفۡلِحُوۡنَ‏ 
(3:104) And from among you there must be a party who invite people to all that is good and enjoin the doing of all that is right and forbid the doing of all that is wrong. It is they who will attain true success.

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir
The objective of this Ayah is that there should be a segment of this Muslim Ummah fulfilling this task, even though it is also an obligation on every member of this Ummah, each according to his ability. Muslim recorded that Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of Allah said,

( «مَنْ رَأَى مِنْكُمْ مُنْكَرًا فَلْيُغَيِّرْهُ بِيَدِهِ، فَإِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ فَبِلِسَانِهِ، فَإِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِع فَبِقَلْبِهِ، وَذلِكَ أَضْعَفُ الْإِيمَان» Whoever among you witnesses an evil, let him change it with his hand. If he is unable, then let him change it with his tongue. If he is unable, then let him change it with his heart, and this is the weakest faith.) 

Imam Ahmad recorded that Hudhayfah bin Al-Yaman said that the Prophet said, (By He in Whose Hand is my soul! You will enjoin righteousness and forbid evil, or Allah shall send down a punishment from Him to you. Then, you will supplicate to Him, but He will not accept your supplication.)

Yusuf Ali Explanation
Muflih, aflaha, falah: the root idea is attainment of desires; happiness, in this world and the next; success; prosperity; freedom from anxiety, care, or a disturbed state of mind;-the opposite of 'azab in the next verse, which includes: failure; misery; punishment or penalty; agony or anguish. The ideal Muslim community is happy, untroubled by conflicts or doubts, sure of itself, strong, united, and prosperous: because it invites to all that is good; enjoins the right; and forbids the wrong,-a master-stroke of description in three clauses.

Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Explanation:
This directive is given to the Muslims in their collective capacity: in order to hold steadfast to this directive of the Qur’ān, they must depute some people from among themselves to enjoin good and forbid evil. It is in this capacity that glad tidings of success are given. It is evident from this that this directive relates to those in authority. Consequently, in an Islamic state, the pulpit of the Friday prayer and the department of police serve this very purpose. Through the Friday sermon, those in authority call them towards righteousness and urge them to refrain from wrongdoings while the police holds people accountable who perpetrate acts which are considered as crimes as per law.

Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:
The task of the Muslim community is to implement the Divine method in human society, and to help truth to triumph over falsehood, goodness over evil. This task is stated in the following verse: “Let there become of you a nation that invites to all that is good, enjoin the doing of what is right and forbid what is wrong. Such are they who shall prosper.”
 
It is imperative for this community to come into existence so as to invite all to that which is good, and to enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong. The Qur’ānic statement imparts that this must be done through a real authority which can invite, enjoin and forbid. Anyone may be able to invite to what is good, but no one can enjoin and forbid unless he is equipped with real authority.

This is the proper Islamic view of the matter. It is essential that there should be an authority to undertake the task of advocating what is good and removing what is evil. The units which constitute this authority must combine together, hold fast to their bond with God, and translate their brotherhood into a reality. The prerequisites enabling this authority to implement the Divine method in life are faith and brotherhood. The Divine method cannot be put into practice without “inviting” others to every good so that people realise the true nature of this Divine method. It also requires an active authority to “enjoin” what is right and “forbid” what is wrong. Such an authority must be obeyed. God says: “We have sent every messenger in order to be obeyed with God’s leave.” (Al-Nisā’ 4:64) Hence, God’s method is not merely preaching and verbal explanation. This is only one part of it. The other part is an active and sustained effort to promote every right thing in human life and to reduce to a minimum every wrong. In this way, the traditions of the good Muslim community will be protected against the whims of anyone who has the power to impose his own interests on the community. It also protects these traditions against all abuse or subservience to personal desire or interest.

The task of enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong is not an easy one, especially when we consider that it inevitably conflicts with people’s desires, interests and pride. There are in this world of ours tyrants who impose their authority by force, people who are interested only in carnal desires and who do not wish to be elevated to a nobler standard. There are also the lazy who hate to be asked to be serious, the unfair who hate justice, the deviant who do not for a moment contemplate a straightforward attitude, as well as those who think wrong of every right thing and consider every wrong thing to be right. No nation, let alone humanity as a whole, can prosper unless goodness prevails, right is upheld and wrong is thrown out. Hence, the need for an authority to promote goodness and right and to combat evil. What is more, this authority must be obeyed.
 
This leads us back to the point where we started: a community must be built on the two essential qualities of faith and brotherhood. It is only such a community that can undertake this difficult task, equipped with the power of faith and the seriousness it derives from fearing God as well as the strength of love and brotherhood. It is only through the fulfilment of this role that this community can prosper. Hence, God describes those who fulfil it as prosperous: “Such are they who shall prosper.”
 
The existence of such a community is essential for the Divine method itself. It is indeed the environment in which it can breathe and become a practical reality. It is a good, healthy environment where people co-operate to promote goodness. In such a community, right is synonymous with goodness, virtue and justice, whereas wrong means evil, vice and injustice. To do good in such a community is easier than to do evil, virtue is simpler than vice, right stronger than wrong, justice more common and beneficial than injustice. A person who wants to do good will find help while the one who wants to do evil will meet resistance. It is this fact that gives this community its greatest value. It provides an environment where goodness and right can prosper without the need for any great effort, because everything in this environment lends them support. Wrong and evil can only grow with difficulty because of the all-round resistance which neglects it.
 
The concept Islam formulates of life, actions, events, values and people is essentially different from all other concepts. Hence, a special environment, which is totally different from that state of ignorance which prevails in unreligious communities, is needed to enable this unique concept, with all its unique values, to flourish. This environment must be conditioned by the Islamic concept of human life and must serve it so that it may live, breathe freely and grow in it, without encountering any internal hindrances to its development. Should it encounter any obstacles, then the essential qualities of the Muslim community, to advocate all that is good and to enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, are certain to remove them. Should an oppressive force attempt to turn people away from God, then it will inevitably encounter those who are prepared to defend and protect the Divine method of life.
 
This environment is embodied in the Muslim community which is built on the twin pillars of faith and brotherhood. Its faith in God brings conformity to its concept of life, events, actions, values and people and gives it a single standard with which to evaluate everything in life. It conducts all its affairs according to the same Divine law and pledges all its loyalty to the leadership which takes upon itself the task of implementing God’s method in human life. The brotherhood of faith provides this community with bonds of love and mutual care. These ties ensure the absence of selfishness in the community and help its members care for one another without pressure or ill feeling.

Our Lord! forgive us our sins, wipe out our evil deeds and make us die with the truly pious

Blessed are those who listened to the call of the prophets of Allah and bring faith on the Divine commandments.  And how ungrateful are those who did not pay any attention to what prophets of Allah were saying or calling them to the path of ultimate truth. And even more ungrateful are those who listened to the call of the prophets but then drifted away from the guidance given to them by Allah and made innovations in the Holy Scriptures to suit their own requirements and lust. 

Here in this verse from Surah 3. Al-i'Imran, is the expression of gratitude by those believers who not only listened to the call of Prophet of Allah and believed in him too.

رَبَّنَاۤ اِنَّنَا سَمِعۡنَا مُنَادِيًا يُّنَادِىۡ لِلۡاِيۡمَانِ اَنۡ اٰمِنُوۡا بِرَبِّكُمۡ فَاٰمَنَّا  ۖ رَبَّنَا فَاغۡفِرۡ لَنَا ذُنُوۡبَنَا وَكَفِّرۡ عَنَّا سَيِّاٰتِنَا وَتَوَفَّنَا مَعَ الۡاَبۡرَارِ​ۚ‏ 
"Our Lord! Indeed we heard a crier calling to the faith saying: "Believe in your Lord"; so we did believe. Our Lord, forgive us our sins, and wipe out our evil deeds and make us die with the truly pious.'" (Surah 3 Al-i'Imran: 193) 

These believers are those who, unlike the pagans and disbelievers of Makkah, did not demand miracles nor did insist on silly arguments and in fact the mere person of the prophet was no less than a miracle in their eyes; so when they saw that this call of professing faith in Allah and the Hereafter is the call of their own hearts and inner self, they bear witness to it and knowledge and intellect also demand it, and accepted it without any hesitation.

Such are the believers who call on to their Lord, and pray that they be wiped of any remnants of evil that reside in them and that they be forgiven and live a life as taught by the Prophet of Allah in the light of Divine Commandments. And their ultimate is to die as truly pious and blessed servants of Allah.

Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:
These hearts are open. They only need to receive the message in order to respond to it. Their sensitivity is enhanced. The first thing impressed on their minds is the fact that they commit sins and may be guilty of disobedience. Hence, they turn to their Lord, praying for His forgiveness and for their bad deeds to be effaced. They also pray to be grouped with the righteous when they die.
 
The message of this verses fits in with the message of the rest of the sūrah. The believers pray to God to forgive them their sins so that they can win their continuous battle against desire and temptation. Achieving victory in this battle is akin to victory in a military battle against the enemies of God and the enemies of faith. Thus the sūrah is a whole unit, each part complementing the other, and delivering a complete and harmonious message.

We need to take a self appraisal and lookout for signs of ungratefulness or evil residing in us and let these me thrown out to have  pure and clean heart so that our supplications are heeded to and our repentance accepted and our sins, misdeeds and evil doings forgiven before death begets us. Let us always make this innovation that our heavenly abode is with the forgiven and most pious. Ameen

    Remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with exclusive devotion

    Surah Al Muzzammil, the 73rd chapter of Qur'an is exclusively themed at remembrance and worship of Allah. In this Surah, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has been instructed to offer Tahajjad prayer in the last quarter of the night "Arise during the night and worship Allah" when one is  free from worldly affairs and concentrate on his worship. Besides, a Command has been given to read the Qur'an in the Tahajjud Prayer. when one reaches such level of devotion that one forgoes part of one's sleep to the worship of Allah, one moves closer and closer to one's Creator to know Him more and learns to rely on the Creator of the universe, rather than being afraid of the worldly lords and demagogues.

    The direction to devote oneself to Allah and remembering Him as much as one can is the theme of the 8th verse of Surah Al Muzzammil being shared today in our series of posts on selected verses from Qur'an. Although, this entire Surah is exclusively addressed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, yet it is equally applicable to all Muslims to follow what has been commanded to be close to Allah and to express our exclusive devotion to Allah.

    وَاذۡكُرِ اسۡمَ رَبِّكَ وَتَبَتَّلۡ اِلَيۡهِ تَبۡتِيۡلًا ؕ‏ 
    (73:8) So remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with exclusive devotion.
    After making mention of the occupation of the daytime, the exhortation to remember the name of your Lord by itself gives the meaning: Never be heedless of the remembrance of your Lord even when you are deeply involved in your worldly occupations, and continue to commemorate His name in one way or another at all times. 

    Same is the theme of the last part of the 35th verse / ayat of Surah Al Ahzab wherein Allah promises great reward for those who remember Allah much and that Allah has prepared forgiveness and mighty reward:

    وَالذّٰكِرِيۡنَ اللّٰهَ كَثِيۡرًا وَّ الذّٰكِرٰتِ ۙ اَعَدَّ اللّٰهُ لَهُمۡ مَّغۡفِرَةً وَّاَجۡرًا عَظِيۡمًا‏
    (33:35) ... the men who remember Allah much and the women who remember Allah much: for them has Allah prepared forgiveness and a mighty reward.
    "Remember Allah much" means that one should mention Allah's name in one way or other at all times in every business of life. Man cannot develop such a state of the mind unless the thought of God becomes deeply embedded in his heart. When this idea has passed beyond his conscious mind and settled deep in his subconscious and unconscious mind, then only he will remember and mention God's name in whatever he does and in whatever he says. 
    • He will begin with bismillah (Bi-smi llāh; بِسْمِ ٱللَّٰهِ, "In the name of Allah") when he eats and say al-hamdu lillah (Arabic: ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّٰهِ, al-Ḥamdu lillāh) when he finishes; 
    • He will remember Allah when he goes to bed, and mention Allah's name when he gets up. 
    One of the supplication as has been the practice of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is appended below:
    "الْحَمْدُ للهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ".
    (Alhamdu lillaahil-lathee 'ahyaanaa ba'da maa 'amaatanaa wa'ilayhin-nushoor.)
    Praise is to Allah Who gives us life after He has caused us to die and to Him is the return.
    • In his conversation also he will again and again pronounce bismillah, al-hamdu-lillalh, in sha-Allah (Arabic: إِنْ شَاءَ ٱللَّٰهُ, meaning if Allah wills), ma sha Allah (Arabic: مَا شَاءَ ٱللَّٰهُ, 'God has willed it'), etc. 
    • And ask for Allah's help in every matter, and thank Him for every blessing. 
    • He will seek His mercy in every affliction, and turn to Him in every trouble. 
    • He will fear Him on encountering every evil, and ask for His forgiveness when he happens to have committed an error and will pray to Him for fulfillment of every need. 
    In short, in every state and in every business of life his function will be to remember Allah.

    This. In fact, is the essence of the Islamic life. For all other acts of worship there is a prescribed time when they are performed, and one is free when one has performed them. But this is the worship which has no special time; it has to be performed constantly so that it links up the man's life with Allah and His service permanently. The other worships and religious acts themselves also become meaningful only when the heart of man remains inclined to Allah not only at the time when the act is actually being carried out but at all times when the tongue is uttering Allah's name constantly. In such a state as this worship and religious acts develop and flourish in a man's life precisely in the same manner as a plant grows in a congenial climate and environment. Contrary to this, the example of the religious services and worships which are carried out only on special times and occasions in the life which is devoid of this constant remembrance of Allah is of the plant which has been planted in an un-congenial climate, and which is growing only due to the special attention and care of the gardener. This very thing has been explained by the Holy Prophet in a Hadith, thus:

    "Mu'adh bin Anas Juhani relates that a person asked the Holy Prophet of Allah. who among those who fight in the way of Allah will get the highest reward? He replied: The one who remembers Allah the most. The man asked: Who among the observers of the fast will get the highest reward? He replied: The one who remembers Allah the most. The man then asked the same question about the offerer of the Prayer, the payer of the Zakat and charities and the performer of Hajj and the Holy Prophet in every case gave the same answer, saying: He who remembers Allah the most." (Musnad Ahmad)

    Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Explanation:
    It has been commanded that the Prophet (sws) must always bear in mind God’s attributes while remembering Him in abundance in his heart and submerging his tongue in celebrating His praises and extolling Him. This is because all the names of God actually signify His attributes. These attributes are the basis of our faith and religion. It is this remembrance of God by him which will protect his faith and determination to meet the demands of his exacting mission. Imām Amīn Aḥsan Iṣlāḥī writes:

    … Just as for the material life of man, breathing is essential, for his spiritual life, remembering God is essential. The body dies if breathing stops. Similarly, if a person becomes indifferent to God, his soul becomes lifeless. It is God’s remembrance that keeps it fresh and alive, and the life of the heart is real life. (Amīn Aḥsan Iṣlāḥī, Tadabbur-i Qur’ān, vol. 9, 27)

    And that he should disassociate himself from everything and devote all his attention to God alone and spend his time in remembering Him. Evident from this is the importance of the tahajjud prayer, the recital of the Qur’ān in it and remembering God in order to acquire steadfastness and perseverance in the effort to preach the religion of God.

    Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:
    Remembering God's name does not mean repeating His honoured name verbally, counting with a bead of one hundred or a thousand pieces. Rather, this is a heart-felt remembrance along with verbal mention, or it means prayer and reading the Qur'an while praying. Wholehearted devotion means concentrating all one's attention on God, addressing one's worship to Him, discarding all thoughts and feelings other than the bond with Him.
    May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 
    وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 
    (36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
    That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

    Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

    May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

    Why does Allah subject the believers to tests?

    When we enter the fold of Islam, we have to enter in wholesome. That is we must have an unflinching trust and faith in our Creator and act upon all His commandments without asking the reason why.  It is generally seen people start to question the Divine wisdom and try to find loopholes in these to tailor these to their mindset. for instance, eating pork is prohibited, yet there are some who argue that by reciting Bismillah (in the name of Allah) it becomes halal. This is simply absurd and stark negation of the Divine commandments given in Qur'an.

    In fact, believers who have entered the fold of Islam are put to severe tests more than the non Muslims. The tests are to ascertain who have accepted the truth from their hearts or just to show to the world that they have believed. But they cannot hoodwink Allah who is cognizant of everything that we hide in our inner selves.

    This is the theme of very second verse of Surah 29. An Kabut (The Spider) being shared today. Although, this verse was more relevant to the times when Islam was taking its roots, it is equally applicable to Muslims today who though apparently exhibit their faith in Allah and Islam, have a tainted heart and do not follow the Islam in true letter and spirit. The eat pork, drink wines, gamble and follow every kind of amusement, yet attend prayers openly to show their allegiance to Islam.

    اَحَسِبَ النَّاسُ اَنۡ يُّتۡرَكُوۡۤا اَنۡ يَّقُوۡلُوۡۤا اٰمَنَّا وَهُمۡ لَا يُفۡتَـنُوۡنَ‏ 
    (29:2) Do people think that they will be let go merely by saying: “We believe,” and that they will not be tested?
    When this thing was said, the conditions prevailing in Makkah were extremely trying. Whoever accepted Islam was made a target of tyranny and humiliation and persecution. If he was a slave or a poor person, he was beaten and subjected to unbearable tortures; if he was a shopkeeper or artisan, he was made to suffer economic hardships, even starvation; if he was a member of an influential family, his own people would tease and harass him in different ways and make life difficult for him. This had created an atmosphere of fear and fright in Makkah, due to . which most people were afraid of believing in the Holy Prophet although they acknowledged him to be a true Prophet in their hearts; and some others who believed would lose heart soon afterwards and would submit and yield to the disbelievers when they confronted dreadful persecutions. Though these trying circumstances could not shake the determination of the strong-willed Companions, naturally they also were sometimes overwhelmed by an intense feeling of anxiety and distraction. An instance of this is found in the tradition of Hadrat Khabbab bin Arat, which has been related by Bukhari, Abu Da'ud and Nasa'i. He says, "During the time when we had become sick of our persecution by the mushriks, one day I saw the Holy Prophet sitting in the shade of the wall of the Ka`bah. I wen up to him and said, `O Messenger of Allah, don't you pray for us !' Hearing this his face became red with feeling and emotion, and he said, `The believers who have gone before you had been subjected to even greater persecutions. Some one of them was made to sit in a ditch in the earth and was sawed into two pieces from head to foot. Someone's joints were rubbed with iron combs so as to withhold him from the Faith. By God, this Mission will be accomplished and the time is not far when a person will travel without apprehension from San`a' to Hadramaut and there will be none but Allah Whom he will fear."

    In order to change this state of agitation into forbearance, Allah tells the believers, "How one can become worthy of Our promises of success in the world and the Hereafter merely by verbal profession of the Faith, but every claimant to the Faith will have to pass through trials and tribulations so as to furnish proof of The truth of his claim. Our Paradise is not so cheap, nor Our special favors in the world so low-priced, that We should bless you with all these as soon as you proclaim verbal faith in Us. The vial is a pre-requisite for them. You will have to undergo hardships for Our sake, suffer losses of life and property, face dangers, misfortunes and difficulties; you will be tried both with fear and with greed; you will have to sacrifice everything that you hold dear for Our pleasure, and bear every discomfort in Our way. Then only will it become manifest whether your claim to faith in Us was true or false. This thing has been said at every such place in the Qur'an where the Muslims have been found placed in hardships and difficulties and obsessed by fear and consternation. In the initial stage of life at Madinah, after the migration, when the Muslims were in great trouble on account of economic hardships, external dangers and internal villainy of the Jews and the hypocrites, Allah said:

    "Do you think that you will enter Paradise without undergoing such trials as were experienced by the believers before you? They met with adversity and affliction and were so shaken by trials that the Prophet of the time and his followers cried out, `when will Allah's help come?' (Then only they were comforted with the good tidings:) "Yes, Allah's help is near!"' (Al-Baqarah: 214).

    Likewise, when after the Battle of Uhud, the Muslims again confronted a period of afflictions, it was said: "Do you think that you will enter Paradise without undergoing any trial? whereas Allah has not yet tried you to see who among you are ready to lay down their lives in His way and who will show fortitude for His sake." (Al-i-`Imran: 142).

    Almost the same thing has been said in Al-i-'Imran: 179, Taubah: 16 and Surah Muhammad: 31. Allah in these verses has impressed on the Muslims that trial is the touchstone by which the pure and the impure are judged. The impure is turned aside by Allah and the pure is selected so that Allah may honor them with His favors which the sincere believers only deserve.

    Tafsir Ibn-Kathir
    (Do people think that they will be left alone because they say: "We believe,'' and will not be tested.) This is a rebuke in the form of a question, meaning that Allah will inevitably test His believing servants according to their level of faith, as it recorded in the authentic Hadith:

    (The people most severely tested are the Prophets, then the righteous, then the next best and the next best. A man will be tested in accordance with the degree of his religious commitment; the stronger his religious commitment, the stronger his test.) 

    This Ayah is like the Ayah, (Do you think that you will enter Paradise without Allah knowing those of you who fought (in His cause) and knowing those who are the patient) (3:142)

    There is a similar Ayah in Surat At-Tawbah. And Allah says: (Or think you that you will enter Paradise without such (trials) as came to those who passed away before you They were afflicted with severe poverty and ailments and were so shaken that even the Messenger and those who believed along with him said, "When (will come) the help of Allah'' Yes! Certainly, the help of Allah is near!) (2:214) 

    Yusuf Ali Explanation
    Mere lip profession of Faith is not enough. It must be tried and tested in the real turmoil of life. The test will be applied in all kinds of circumstances, in individual life and in relation to the environment around us, to see whether we can strive constantly and put Allah above Self. Much pain, sorrow, and self-sacrifice may be necessary, not because they are good in themselves, but because they will purify us, like fire applied to a goldsmith's crucible to burn out the dross.

    Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:
    Immediately after the opening, the sūrah begins speaking about faith and the hard test believers are subjected to in order to make their belief a reality. It mentions that it is through such testing that true believers are distinguished from liars. This is the first strong note made in the sūrah, given in the form of a rhetorical question about people’s concept of faith. They often imagine that it is merely a word they utter: “Do people think that once they say: ‘We are believers’, they will be left alone?” Belief is not a mere word we say; it is a reality that imposes duties, a trust that carries requirements and a struggle that demands patience and perseverance. It is not enough that people should claim to believe.

    When they make this claim they are not left alone. They are subjected to tests so as to prove their sincerity and true metal, just as gold is tested with fire so as to separate it from any cheap elements. The Arabic word used here for test derives from the root fitnah, which imparts exactly this sense of being subjected to a test with all that this implies.

    Now let us take a self appraisal and see the truthfulness of our faith and resolve to live a life as described in the Qur'an and Sunnah. Let us not fil in our tests.

    [0 men!] Follow what has been revealed to you from your Lord and follow no masters other than Him

    Surah Al A'raf is the seventh chapter of the Qur'an. The principal subject of this surah is "invitation to the Divine Message sent down to Muhammad" (Allah's peace be upon him), which is couched in a warning. This is because the Messenger had spent a long time admonishing the people of Makkah without any tangible effect on them. Nay, they had turned a deaf ear to his message and become so obdurate and antagonistic that, in accordance with the Divine Design, the Messenger was going to be commanded to leave them and turn to other people, That is why they are being admonished to accept the Message but, at the same time, they are being warned in strong terms of the consequences that followed the wrong attitude of the former people towards their Messengers. Thus, it begins with the caution from our Creator that:

    "(7:2) This is a Book (The Qur'an) revealed to you. Let there be no impediment in your heart about it. (It has been revealed to you) that you may thereby warn [the unbelievers], that it may be a reminder to the believers."

    Thereafter, the third verse comes with the strict warning to worship only One Master, Allah, and none should follow any other masters other than Him for He is the sole Creator of the universe and to whom we shall all return. Let us now read the third verse and its explanation by eminent Muslims exegetes and scholars:

    اِتَّبِعُوۡا مَاۤ اُنۡزِلَ اِلَيۡكُمۡ مِّنۡ رَّبِّكُمۡ وَلَا تَتَّبِعُوۡا مِنۡ دُوۡنِهٖۤ اَوۡلِيَآءَ​ ؕ قَلِيۡلًا مَّا تَذَكَّرُوۡنَ‏ 
    (7:3) [0 men!] Follow what has been revealed to you from your Lord and follow no masters other than Him. Little are you admonished.
    This is the main theme of this Surah. It invites the people to accept the Guidance that has been sent down by Allah through His Messengers, for this alone can impart the true knowledge to man about himself and the universe, and tell him the aim and object of his life and teach him the principles on which to build his morality, social life, culture and civilization. Man should acknowledge Allah alone as his Guide and follow only His Guidance that has been sent down through His Messengers. 'The discourse warns that it is basically wrong to turn to anyone other than Allah for guidance, for this has always resulted in utter ruin and will inevitably lead to ruin.

    Tafsir Ibn-Kathir
    (Follow what has been sent down unto you from your Lord) meaning, follow and imitate the unlettered Prophet, who brought you a Book that was revealed for you, from the Lord and master of everything.

    (and follow not any Awliya', besides Him (Allah)) meaning, do not disregard what the Messenger brought you and follow something else, for in this case, you will be deviating from Allah's judgment to the decision of someone else. 

    Allah's statement, (Little do you remember!) is similar to: 
    (And most of mankind will not believe even if you desire it eagerly) [12:103], and;
    (And if you obey most of those on the earth, they will mislead you far away from Allah's path) [6:116], and,
    (And most of them believe not in Allah except that they attribute partners unto Him) [12:106].

    Muhammad Asad Explanation:
    Some of the great Muslim thinkers, and particularly Ibn Hazm and Ibn Taymiyyah, maintain that the expression awliya' (here rendered as "masters") denotes, in this context "authorities" in the religious sense of the word, implying a prohibition of attributing legal validity - side by side with Qur'anic ordinances - to the subjective opinions of any person below the Prophet.

    This is added in order that men might not be puffed up with such little knowledge as they possessed, for there are great heights to be scaled in the spiritual kingdom.

    Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:
    It should be noted here that when the Prophet was addressed in person, the hook is described as having been sent down to him personally: “This is a book that has been bestowed on you from on high.” (Verse 2) At the same time, when all mankind is addressed, the book is described as having been sent down to them from their Lord: “Follow what has been sent down to you by your Lord.” (Verse 3) In the case of the Prophet (peace be upon him), the book is revealed to him so that he believes in it and warns people and reminds them of its message. In the case of other human beings, the book is revealed to them so that they believe in it and follow it to the exclusion of any other source. In both cases, honour is made by this revelation. A human being to whom God sends down a book, choosing him for this task and bestowing on him all this bounty and blessings, should remember and should be thankful. He must also address himself to the task with strength and resolution.
     
    The task is great. It aims to bring about a total change in human communities, encompassing their concepts, ideals, values, moral standards, traditions, social systems, economic set-ups as well as their relationships with God, the universe and other human beings. Hence, the sūrah seeks to strongly shake people’s consciences so that they wake up to the task and start examining their situation. This is achieved by portraying the destinies of past communities who denied the divine message, how they were destroyed in this life and the sort of destiny awaiting them in the life to come.

    Concluding remarks: The message is very clear - Follow what is been given in true letters and spirit and follow the Divine revelations only. No man-made laws are to be made superior to the laws given out in the Qur'an. Anyone who negates these laws or makes amends to suit the own or interest of a community is liable to severe punishment.
    May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 
    وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 
    (36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
    That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

    Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.
