The reward of calling for prayers (Adhan - الأذان) and attending prayers (As salat - الصلاة)

As salat - الصلاة is a very important pillar of Islam, obligatory for all adult male and female Muslims five times a day. The five cycle prayer time commences every morning before the break of the dawn, and continues at noon, afternoon, just after the sunset and late at night. The As salat - الصلاة in fact is one to one communication between a servant and His Lord, Allah without the need of any intermediaries.

Men are encouraged to offer As salat - الصلاة in the masjids. A prayer caller, called Moazzan " مؤذن " calls the Adhan - الأذان which alerts the worshippers and they proceed to the masjid to offer the As Salat in congregation. This caller of the Adhan assumes a very rewarding position among the Muslims as will be seen in the Hadith being shared today. The hadith attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ alos makes a mention of importance of some of the As Salat over other and hurrying to the masjid to be in the front rows.

This Hadith is mentioned in Sahi al-Bukhārī  (Book 53 Witnesses /  كتاب الشهادات / Chapter 30:  Drawing lots to solve problems / بَابُ الْقُرْعَةِ فِي الْمُشْكِلاَتِ‏ ) as Hadith 2689, given herein under:

Narrated byAbu Huraira:

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "If the people knew what is the reward of making the call (for the prayer) and (of being in) the first row (in the prayer), and if they found no other way to get this privilege except by casting lots, they would certainly cast lots for it. If they knew the reward of the noon prayer, they would race for it, and if they knew the reward of the morning (i.e. Fajr) and `Isha prayers, they would present themselves for the prayer even if they had to crawl to reach there.

This hadith narrated by Abu Huraira highlights the immense spiritual rewards associated with various aspects of the Islamic practice of Salat (prayer). The hadith emphasizes the importance of the Adhan (call to prayer), the significance of praying in the first row, and the great value of specific prayers, particularly the Fajr (dawn) and Isha (night) prayers. Let us explain each aspect of the Hadith separately:

The Call to Prayer (Adhan):
  • The Adhan is the call to prayer that announces the time for the five daily prayers. The hadith emphasizes that if people truly understood the immense reward for making the Adhan, they would be so eager to perform it that they would cast lots for the privilege.
  • Related Hadith: The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: "The Mu'adhdhinun (those who call the Adhan) will have the longest necks on the Day of Resurrection." (Sahih Muslim 387)
  • Implication: The phrase "longest necks" is understood metaphorically to mean that the Mu'adhdhinun will have a special status or honor on the Day of Judgment. This shows the high value placed on those who call others to worship Allah.
Praying in the First Row:
  • The first row in the congregation holds a special status due to its proximity to the Imam and because those in the first row are seen as being foremost in their eagerness to worship Allah.
  • Related Hadith: The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: "The best rows for men are the first rows, and the worst rows for men are the last rows." (Sahih Muslim 440a)
  • Implication: Being in the first row is highly meritorious because it reflects a person’s zeal to be closest to the Imam and to gain the greatest reward in communal prayer.
Importance of the Prayers
  • The Noon Prayer (Dhuhr):
    • The Dhuhr prayer, offered in the middle of the day, is significant in the routine of daily prayers. The hadith indicates that if people truly knew its reward, they would hasten to perform it.
    • Related Hadith: The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: "The prayer offered in the middle of the day (i.e., Dhuhr) is the most beloved prayer to Allah." (Sunan al-Nasa'i 504)
    • Implication: Dhuhr prayer, despite being in the middle of the day when people might be busy, holds great spiritual value, and Muslims should strive to perform it promptly.
  • Fajr and Isha Prayers:
    • Fajr and Isha prayers are particularly emphasized due to the difficulty associated with them—Fajr is at dawn when people are typically asleep, and Isha is late at night. The hadith stresses that the reward for these prayers is so great that people would attend them even if they had to crawl to reach the mosque.
    • Related Hadith on Fajr and Isha:
      • The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: "Whoever prays the Fajr prayer in congregation, it is as if he has prayed the whole night." (Sahih Muslim 656a)
      • The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) also said: "The most burdensome prayers for the hypocrites are the Isha and Fajr prayers, but if they knew what (reward) there is in them, they would come even if they had to crawl." (Sahih al-Bukhari 657)
    • Implication: Both prayers are challenging due to the timing, but the spiritual reward is immense. This shows the importance of overcoming personal comfort to maintain a strong connection with Allah.
Connection to the Quran
The emphasis on Salat in this hadith aligns with the Quranic teachings about the importance of prayer. The Quran frequently emphasizes the need to establish regular prayers and to be mindful of them.
  • Consistency and Commitment:
    • Quranic Reference: "And establish prayer and give zakah and bow with those who bow [in worship and obedience]." (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:43)
    • Implication: The Quran underscores the importance of regular and committed prayer, which is echoed in the hadith’s emphasis on the rewards for specific prayers.
  • Spiritual Awareness:
    • The hadith encourages believers to be aware of the spiritual rewards of their actions, which aligns with the Quran’s emphasis on conscious and mindful worship.
    • Quranic Reference: "Indeed, the prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do." (Surah Al-Ankabut 29:45)
    • Implication: Many a non Muslim label prayer as a ritual and not a form of worship. It is for their information that Prayer is not just a ritual; it is a means to connect with Allah and to cultivate a life free of immorality. The rewards mentioned in the hadith serve to motivate believers to perform prayers with sincerity and dedication.
The hadith narrated by Abu Huraira highlights the tremendous rewards associated with various aspects of prayer, such as making the Adhan, praying in the first row, and performing the Dhuhr, Fajr, and Isha prayers. It underscores the idea that if believers truly understood these rewards, they would go to great lengths to attain them.

In light of other hadiths and the Quran, this hadith encourages Muslims to maintain consistency and dedication in their prayers, to appreciate the spiritual benefits of their worship, and to strive for excellence in their relationship with Allah. The rewards mentioned serve as a powerful motivation to prioritize Salat and engage with it wholeheartedly, knowing that the effort is highly valued by Allah.

Who is Muslim to Allah

We have written a number of posts on defining Muslims, yet many a reader keep asking to define a person who is a Muslim to Allah. Generally speaking, a Muslim is someone who submits to the will of Allah, believes in the oneness of God (Tawhid), and follows the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as conveyed in the Quran and Hadith. The identity of a Muslim is defined by their faith (Iman), their actions (Amal), and their adherence to the principles of Islam.

At many a places in Qur'an, Allah has laid down the conditions for someone to be a Muslim. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has also explained these verses to educate the non Muslims to know these pre-conditions before entering the fold of Islam. Most people do not know the truth of the Qur'an of Allah, and comment on Islam without knowing what actually Allah, Qur'an and Islam is. Thus it is the responsibility of everyone wanting to know about Islam to read Qur'an once in own language, then the canvass of confusion, mistrust and  ambiguity will start to clear and answer many a lies about Islam.

" .... And We have sent down to you the Book as clarification for all things and as guidance and mercy and good tidings for the Muslims." (Surah Al Nahl 16:89)

That is Qur'an clarifies all doubts and answers questions to tell the world who is a Muslim to Allah and those who understand and follow the Divine Commandments contained in Qur'an are true Muslims. Let us know these pre-conditions for being a Muslim is to Allah, based on the Quran and Hadith.

Submission to Allah (Islam):
Let us first understand what Islam is, for the word Muslim takes its roots from the very word Islam. The word "Muslim" comes from the Arabic root "S-L-M," which means submission or surrender. A Muslim is one who submits to the will of Allah.

Surah Al-Imran (3:19): "Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allah is Islam. And those who were given the Scripture did not differ except after knowledge had come to them - out of jealous animosity between themselves. And whoever disbelieves in the verses of Allah, then indeed, Allah is swift in [taking] account."

Surah Al-Imran (3:85): "And whoever desires other than Islam as religion - never will it be accepted from him, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers."

These verses highlight that being a Muslim means submitting to the will of Allah, which is the essence of the faith.

Belief in the Oneness of Allah (Tawhid):
Tawhid is the foundation of a Muslim's faith, emphasizing the absolute monotheism that is central to Islam. Thus, a Muslim is someone who believes in the oneness of Allah, acknowledging Him as the sole creator and sustainer of the universe.

Surah Al-Ikhlas (112:1-4): "Say, 'He is Allah, [who is] One, Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, Nor is there to Him any equivalent.'"

Surah Al-Baqarah (2:163):

Your God is ˹only˺ One God. There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him—the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful

The above verses make it clear that anyone who claims to be a Muslim must have firm belief in the Oneness of Allah. Anyone who has a doubt about oneness of Allah and tend to follow and route his grievances to worldly deities or even associating someone to share the powers of Allah is surely misled and cannot claim himself to be a Muslim.

Following the Guidance of the Quran and Sunnah:
A Muslim is one who follows the guidance provided by the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Surah Al-Ahzab (33:36): "It is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decreed a matter, that they should [thereafter] have any choice about their affair. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly strayed into clear error."

Surah Al-Imran (3:31): "Say, [O Muhammad], 'If you should love Allah, then follow me, so Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.'"

These verses emphasize the importance of adhering to the teachings of the Quran and the Sunnah (the practices and sayings of the Prophet).

Righteous Actions (Amal Saleh):
Merely proclaiming to be a Muslim is not enough. One has to show by his actions, his dealings with others and being a righteous, for a Muslim is not only defined by his belief but also by his righteous actions.

Surah Al-Asr (103:1-3): "By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience."

Surah Al-Baqarah (2:277): "Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds and establish prayer and give zakah will have their reward with their Lord, and there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve."

These verses show that true faith (Iman) is coupled with good deeds, such as prayer, charity, and other acts of kindness and justice.

Sincerity (Ikhlas) and Intention (Niyyah):
The sincerity of a Muslim's heart and their intentions are crucial to their identity as a Muslim. The sincerity in belief and faith draws a thin line between the Muslims and the hypocrites (Munafiqun المنافقون). In the early days of Islam, many pretended to be Muslims outwardly, but in their hearts they remained disbelievers. A Muslim thus has to have a clear understanding of what he beleives and have sincere intentions in what he does.

Surah Al-Bayyinah (98:5): "And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakah. And that is the correct religion."

Hadith (Sahih Bukhari, 1): The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended."

These teachings highlight the importance of performing actions with sincerity and pure intention for the sake of Allah.

Brotherhood and Community (Ummah):
A Muslim is part of a global brotherhood, united by faith and mutual support. A true Muslim is a brother to the other Muslim and this bondage should be supreme over all other wordily pledges and bondages.

Surah Al-Hujurat (49:10): "The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy."

Hadith (Sahih Muslim, 2586): The Prophet said, "The believers, in their mutual kindness, compassion, and sympathy are just like one body. When one of the limbs suffers, the whole body responds to it with wakefulness and fever."

Muslims are encouraged to support one another, fostering a sense of unity and brotherhood. It is this bondage which ensure co-existence specially in times of distress, aggression and subjugation.

Devotion to Worship:
Worship is central to the life of a Muslim, as it is the means through which they connect with Allah and seek His guidance and mercy. A Muslim is devoted to worshipping Allah through various acts such as prayer (Salah), fasting (Sawm), charity (Zakah), and pilgrimage (Hajj).

Surah Al-Baqarah (2:21): "O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become righteous."

Surah Al-Ankabut (29:45): "Recite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do."

In the light of the Quran and Hadith, a Muslim is someone who submits to Allah's will, believes in His oneness, follows the guidance of the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, performs righteous deeds with sincerity, and is part of a global brotherhood. A Muslim is devoted to worship and seeks to live a life of piety, modesty, and righteousness in accordance with the teachings of Islam. This identity is defined by both faith and action, with the ultimate goal of earning the pleasure of Allah and attaining success in this life and the Hereafter.

Isn't it time to carryout a reappraisal of our faith and ascertain our level of faith in Allah and be the Muslims Allah wants us to be??

Please read our previous posts to grasp the theme in totality:
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. Fate of the People who sinned and defied the Divine Commandments as mentioned in Qur'an

Defying divine commandments and continue to live a life of wickedness and wrongdoings is considered a serious matter, not only in Islam but all Divine faiths. The consequence of defying the Divine commandments conveyed to the people through prophets and messengers often resulted into severe Divine wrath and many a people perished, leaving behind the remains of their glory, obsessed with which they refused to obey God and continued to live a life of wickedness and sin. The punishments for defying Allah's commandments not only robbed the defiant of their glory in this world but also earned them a life of utter misery in the life of Hereafter.

Let us have a run down of the potential consequences of defying God, we Muslims call Allah - these should be read in the backdrop of historical references of some of the highly placed people and civilizations and their refusal to obey Allah :

Worldly Consequences:
  • Hardships and Trials:
    • Defying Allah's commandments can lead to hardships, trials, or difficulties in this life as a consequence of one’s actions. The Qur'an often speaks of the consequences that befell past nations when they turned away from divine guidance.
    • "And fear a trial which will not strike those who have wronged among you exclusively, and know that Allah is severe in penalty." Surah Al-Anfal (8:25):
    • This verse suggests that disobedience can lead to collective trials or punishments, affecting entire communities or nations.
  • Loss of Blessings: Persistently defying Allah's commandments can result in the loss of blessings such as health, wealth, peace, and contentment. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) mentioned that sins can deprive a person of sustenance or bring about hardships.
Spiritual Consequences:
  • Distance from Allah:
    • Sinning and defying Allah’s commandments can lead to a person becoming spiritually distant from Allah. This can result in a loss of inner peace, increased anxiety, and a sense of emptiness.
    • "Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned." Surah Al-Baqarah (2:286):
    • This verse reminds us that each person is accountable for their actions, and persistent sinning can weigh heavily on the soul.
  • Hardened Heart:
    • Persistently defying Allah can harden a person’s heart, making it more difficult for them to repent or return to righteousness. A hardened heart becomes less receptive to guidance and more inclined towards evil.
    • "No! Rather, the stain has covered their hearts of that which they were earning." Surah Al-Mutaffifin (83:14):
Punishment in the Hereafter:
  • Hellfire:
    • The ultimate punishment for those who defy Allah’s commandments without repentance is the punishment of Hellfire. The Qur'an vividly describes the torment of Hell for those who reject faith or persist in grave sins.
    • "And for those who disbelieved in their Lord is the punishment of Hell, and wretched is the destination. When they are thrown into it, they hear from it a [dreadful] inhaling while it boils up." Surah Al-Mulk (67:6-7)
    • Sins like shirk (associating partners with Allah) are considered the gravest and are warned to lead to eternal punishment in Hell unless repented for.
  • Standing Before Allah for Judgment:
    • On the Day of Judgment, every person will stand before Allah and be judged according to their deeds. Those who defied His commandments without seeking forgiveness will be held accountable and punished accordingly.
    • Surah Al-Zalzalah (99:7-8): "So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it."
    • This verse emphasizes that every deed, no matter how small, will be accounted for on the Day of Judgment.
  • Loss of Paradise
    • One of the gravest consequences of defying Allah’s commandments is being deprived of Paradise. The Qur'an describes Paradise as a place of eternal bliss, reserved for those who obey Allah and live righteously.
    • Surah Al-Baqarah (2:81): "Yes, whoever earns evil and his sin has encompassed him - those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally."
In the Qur'an, a mention is made of such people of the past at a number of places. Some of these mentions are listed herein under. In due course, we would take the case of such people separately in the light of the verses of Qur'an to let our readers draw pertinent lessons and to shape their lives in accordance with the Divine Commandments so as not to be subjected to the Divine Wrath:
  • People of Ad and Thamud: For disobeying the prophets sent to them and for continue to live a life of idolatry, wickedness and sin, these were struck with the Divine wrath as mentioned in Qur'an:  (7:73-79, 11:61-69, 25:38)
  • The people of Noah (Nuh
    • They were drowned into biggest flood ever in the history for disbelieving in the message brought to them by the revered prophet. Even one of the sins of Nuh عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ was drowned for not following the invitation to worship One True God as preached by his father. (7:64, 11:49, 23:23-30)
    • The word(s) "noah" appears 47 time(s) in 47 verse(s) in Quran in Abdullah Yusuf Ali translation (References)
    • Read our earlier post: Prophet Nuh (Noah) and the Great Flood
  • People of Lot (Lut
    • His people were subjected to wrath of Allah in the form of shower of burning rocks for defying the Divine Commandment of refraining from ills like homosexuality. Even wife of Nuh عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ fell prey to the Divine wrath for aiding her people against her husband. (Qur'an 7:80-84, 11:77-83, 26:160-173)
    • Read our earlier post: Prophet Lut (Lot) and Allah's Wrath on his People
  • Pharaoh and his followers for the wicked and harsh rule and defying the Divine Commandments brought to him by Prophet Moses (Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) - (Qur'an 2:49-50, 7:103-137, 10:75-83)
  • People of Jonah (Yunis
    • Prophet Yunis عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ and his mention assumes special attention for him being swallowed by a giant fish and when he repented, the Divine mercy prevailed and was delivered on shore.
    • His people initially defied the Divine Commandments brought to them by the revered prophet, but were forgiven for repenting their defiance. (Qur'an 10:98, 37:139-148)
    • Read our earlier post: Prophet Younis (Jonah) and Allah's Displeasure
  • The people of Al-Aikah or the People of the Wood were the community of Prophet Shuaib عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ They were also  called Midianites after the name of their capital city and their territory. As regards Al-Aikah, it was the ancient name of Tabuk and literally means a thick forest. They were punished for refusing to give up idolatry and life of sin and wickedness (Qur'an 15:78-79, 26:176-189)
  •  People of the Ditch who persecuted the believing men and women and then did not repent. They will certainly suffer the punishment of Hell and the torment of burning. (Qur'an 85:4-11)
  • People of the Elephant (Ashab al feel)
  • People who were sent three prophets - yet they rejected them all (Qur'an 36: 13-32)
  • People of Tubba as mentioned in (Qur'an 44:37-50) for being disbelievers and sinful
* More being added

We need to ponder over these mentions and realise that defying divine commandments in Islam can lead to serious consequences both in this life and the Hereafter. These include worldly hardships, spiritual decline, and potentially severe punishment in the Hereafter. However, Islam also provides a path to redemption through sincere repentance, which can erase sins and bring a person back into Allah’s mercy. Therefore, believers are encouraged to constantly seek Allah's forgiveness and strive to live according to His guidance.

What pre-sleep actions at night Prophet Muhammad ﷺ prescribed before making a Supplication

Supplications, known as Du'a in Islam, hold immense significance as these are considered a direct means of communication between a believer and Allah. Du'a is an act of worship that reflects the believer's humility, dependence on Allah, and recognition of His sovereignty. It is a way to express needs, seek guidance, forgiveness, and blessings, and to draw closer to Allah.

Today, in our series of posts regarding supplications attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, we share a beautiful supplication and set of instructions given by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ regarding what a believer should do before going to sleep. It encourages a practice that not only prepares one physically and spiritually for sleep but also aligns the believer's heart and mind with faith in Allah.

This Hadith is mentioned in Sahi al-Bukhārī  (Book 80 Invocations /  كتاب الدعوات / Chapter 6:  To sleep with ablution / بَابُ إِذَا بَاتَ طَاهِرًا‏ ) as Hadith 6311.

NoteThis version is commonly referenced in various collections, including Sahih Muslim. The supplication is part of the Prophet’s nightly routine before sleep, emphasizing reliance on Allah for both life and death.

Let us read the Hadith as Narrated by Al-Bara bin `Azib:

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said to me, "When you want to go to bed, perform ablution as you do for prayer, then lie down on your right side and say: "O Allah, I submit my face (myself) to You, and I entrust my affairs to You, and I turn my back to You (for support), out of desire (for Your reward) and fear (of Your punishment) of You. There is no refuge and no escape from You except to You. I believe in Your Book which You have revealed and in Your Prophet whom You have sent."  If you should die then (after reciting this) you will die on the religion of Islam (i.e., as a Muslim); so let these words be the last you say (before going to bed)" While I was memorizing it, I said, "Wa birasulika al-ladhi arsalta (in Your Apostle whom You have sent).' The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "No, but say: Wa binabiyyika al-ladhi arsalta (in Your Prophet whom You have sent).

Let’s explore the pre-supplication actions desired by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ:
  • Performing Wudu Before Sleep
    • Spiritual Cleanliness: The Prophet (peace be upon him) instructs the believer to perform Wudu (ablution) before going to bed, which is the same Wudu one performs before prayer. This act of purification symbolizes spiritual cleanliness and prepares the soul for rest, aligning it with a state of purity before meeting Allah, whether in sleep or in death.
    • Protection: Wudu is known to protect a believer from evil influences during sleep, as it puts one in a state of ritual purity.
  • Lying on the Right Side:
    • Following the Sunnah: Lying on the right side is a Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). This practice is not just a physical posture but a symbol of aligning oneself with the Prophet's way in all aspects of life.
    • Health Benefits: While the primary reason is spiritual, modern studies have suggested that sleeping on the right side may have health benefits, including aiding in digestion and reducing pressure on the heart.
The Supplication:
  • Submission to Allah: The supplication begins with a declaration of complete submission to Allah: "I have submitted my face (i.e., myself) to You." This reflects a believer’s total surrender and trust in Allah, acknowledging that everything is in His control.
  • Entrusting Affairs to Allah: By saying "I have entrusted my affairs to You," the believer acknowledges that all matters, whether big or small, are under Allah’s control, and one must rely on Him alone.
  • Seeking Refuge in Allah: The phrase "There is no refuge and no escape from You except with You" highlights the understanding that only Allah can provide true refuge and protection, and that one cannot escape from His power or decree.
  • Affirmation of Faith: The believer affirms their faith in Allah’s revelation and His Prophet, reinforcing the core tenets of Islamic belief just before sleep.
  • Dying Upon the Fitrah:
    • Natural State of Belief: The Prophet (peace be upon him) assures that if one dies after reciting this supplication, they will die upon the Fitrah, which is the natural state of belief in Allah. This emphasizes the importance of ending the day with a heart full of faith, ensuring that the last thoughts and words before sleep are dedicated to Allah.
  • Making it the Last Words
    • Mindful Sleeping: The instruction to make these words the last before sleep ensures that a believer's day ends in a state of remembrance and submission to Allah. It sets a mindful and spiritual tone for the night, guarding the believer's heart and mind even in their unconscious state.
This Hadith provides a comprehensive guide to a nightly routine that purifies, aligns, and secures the believer's heart and mind before sleep. By performing Wudu, lying on the right side, and reciting this profound supplication, a Muslim is reminded of their complete reliance on Allah, their faith in His guidance, and their alignment with the prophetic way of life. The ultimate wisdom lies in ending the day in a state of purity, submission, and remembrance of Allah, ensuring that if one were to die in their sleep, they would meet Allah in a state of pure faith.

The purpose of sharing these supplications is to provide our readers formats that are prophetic and none can be better than these supplication in perfect words for our revered Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to supplicate in these very words. We should try to memories these supplications or at least keep these by our bedside to read before sleeping.
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

Note: When we mention God in our posts, we mean One True God, we call Allah in Islam, with no associates. Allah is the Sole Creator of all things, and that Allah is all-powerful and all-knowing. Allah has no offspring, no race, no gender, no body, and is unaffected by the characteristics of human life.

Prophetic prediction and warning about the present times (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

All prophets and messengers of Allah had been given an insight about the events to happen in future and these had been shared by them as forewarning of what is to come. The initial Muslims established a strong foothold right from times of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ which continued in big military achievements with the defeat of the Byzantines, Spain including ruling Spain over 800 years and almost the entire year during the Ottoman Empire till the end of World War I. Likewise, the Muslims scientists dominated the initial research work and scientific discoveries.

Many today may not know the achievements of some of the leading Muslim scholars and scientists whose significant scientific achievements encompassed a wide range of subject areas, especially medicine, mathematics, astronomy, agriculture as well as physics, economics, engineering and optics. Muslim scientists contributed significantly to science and civilization in the Islamic Golden Age (i.e. from the 8th century to the 14th century).

Some of these included:
  • Ibn Sina, commonly known in the West as Avicenna, was a preeminent philosopher and physician of the Muslim world, flourishing during the Islamic Golden Age, serving in the courts of various Iranian rulers. He is often described as the father of early modern medicine.
  • Al-Hassan ibn al-Haytham (mathematician, astronomer, and physicist),
  • Muhammad bin Musa al-Khwarizmi (a polymath who produced vastly influential Arabic-language works in mathematics, astronomy, and geography.) ,
  • And others like Ghiyath al-Din al- Kashani, Abu Wafa Muhammad al-Buzanji, Abu Abdullah al- Battani, Mohammad Bin Ahmed. In fact the list is too long of the enterprising Muslims who laid the foundation of many scientific discoveries to be taken over by the non Muslims, while there was no follow up by the Muslims.  You may like to see the List of scientists in medieval Islamic world (Wikipedia)
However when the printing press was invented, Muslims failed to take advantage of this new invention to publish books based on the research work of Muslims scientists and Muslim generals who subdued armies much larger than theirs and conquered vast lands.

People know about Alexander the Great and his conquests, but very few know of Khalid ibn al-Walid who never lost a battle against the armies of the Byzantine Empire and defeated them in Battle of Yarmuk with only 40,00 soldiers while the opposing forces far far too many and too strong. The result of the battle was a crushing Muslim victory that ended Roman rule in Syria after about seven centuries. The Battle of the Yarmuk is regarded as one of the most decisive battles in military history.

Likewise the successive generals of the Ottoman Empire conquered almost the entire present day Europe. But with the unity of the West and exploitation of technology in the art of warfare including tacit diplomacy (like role of people like the Lawrence of Arabia) Muslims lost their once strong foothold on the ground and by the end of WW-I Muslims were vanquished. And since then they have not been able to rise - something that the Prophet of Allah predicted.

This prediction attributed to P rophet Muhammad ﷺ in a Hadith mentioned in Sunan Abi Dawud (Book # 39  Battles (Kitab Al-Malahim) / كتاب    الملاحم / Chapter # 1591 Nations Summoning One Another To Attack Muslims / باب فِي تَدَاعِي الأُمَمِ عَلَى الإِسْلاَمِ / as Hadith number # 4297, quoted herein under:

Narrated by Thawban:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: The people will soon summon one another to attack you as people when eating invite others to share their dish. Someone asked: Will that be because of our small numbers at that time? He replied: No, you will be numerous at that time: but you will be scum and rubbish like that carried down by a torrent, and Allah will take fear of you from the breasts of your enemy and last enervation into your hearts. Someone asked: What is wahn (enervation). Messenger of Allah (ﷺ): He replied: Love of the world and dislike of death.

Grade: Sahih (Al-Albani)

This provides a prophetic insight into a future condition of the Muslim Ummah (community). It describes a time when Muslims, despite being large in number, will find themselves weak and vulnerable, like "scum and rubbish" carried by a torrent. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) explains the underlying reasons for this condition, which are the love of the world and the dislike of death. and today the plight of Muslims exactly matches the prophetic prediction as Muslims are more engrossed in the wordily pleasures and least concerned about their death.

Moreover, the dominance of science and technology which once the prime focus of Muslim scholars and their research work which laid the foundation of modern science has since gone into the hands of the non Muslims and we have digressed from the knowledge to mundane issues that have made us stand still in what we once know for which the others envied us. Now the entire research and development in science and technology is domain of the West while Muslims envy them for their developmental work as once the others envied us. Today, instead of spending money on research and development sponsor their young brains, while there is colossal brain drain to the West where these young Muslims have made major scientific discoveries to the benefit of the West, the rich Muslims are more concerned about building palaces, buying expensive cars and merry making, which is exactly as predicted by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ more than fifteen centuries before.

Wisdom Behind the Hadith:
  • Prophetic Insight into Future Conditions:
    • Warning of Future Weakness: The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ foretells a time when the Muslim community will be large in number but will lack strength, unity, and influence. This condition is not due to external factors like their numbers but rather due to internal spiritual and moral weaknesses.
    • Historical and Contemporary Relevance: This Hadith can be seen as relevant throughout history and even today, where despite the large population of Muslims worldwide, the community often faces challenges due to a lack of unity, internal divisions, and a weakening of spiritual and moral values.
  • Metaphor of "Scum and Rubbish":
    • Lack of Substance: The comparison to "scum and rubbish" carried by a torrent suggests a lack of substance, direction, and significance. Just as scum on a torrent is easily swept away and lacks weight, the Ummah will become easily manipulated and influenced by others if it loses its core values and principles.
    • Loss of Influence: This metaphor reflects a loss of influence and respect in the world, where the Muslim community might be numerous but fails to exert positive influence or defend its interests effectively.
  • Concept of Wahn (Weakness or Enervation):
    • Love of the World: The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ identifies "love of the world" as a key factor in the weakening of the Ummah. This refers to an excessive attachment to worldly pleasures, material wealth, and comfort at the expense of spiritual and moral obligations.
    • Dislike of Death: The "dislike of death" reflects a fear of the hereafter and an attachment to life in this world. It indicates a lack of readiness to sacrifice for higher principles, such as justice, truth, and the defense of the faith. This fear weakens the resolve and courage of the community.
  • Spiritual and Moral Decline
    • Internal Weakness: The Hadith highlights that the root cause of the community's vulnerability is internal—a decline in spiritual strength, moral values, and commitment to the principles of Islam. When love for the temporary world overrides commitment to the eternal hereafter, the community becomes weak and susceptible to external threats.
    • Importance of Spiritual Revival: The Hadith serves as a call to self-reflection and spiritual revival. It urges Muslims to reassess their priorities, renew their commitment to their faith, and cultivate a balanced relationship with the world—using it as a means to achieve the hereafter rather than an end in itself.
  • Impact on the Enemy
    • Loss of Fear: Prophet Muhammad ﷺ mentions that Allah will take the fear of Muslims out of the hearts of their enemies. This implies that when Muslims are spiritually and morally weak, they lose the respect and fear that once protected them from their enemies.
    • Strategic Vulnerability: Without spiritual strength and unity, the community becomes strategically vulnerable, inviting others to exploit and harm them, much like people are invited to share in a dish.
    • Losing what early Muslims strived for: The work of many Muslim scholars, scientists and mathematicians, astronomers and geographers, whose significant scientific achievements encompassed a wide range of subject areas, especially medicine, mathematics, astronomy, agriculture as well as physics, economics, engineering and optics. Muslim scientists contributed significantly to science and civilization in the Islamic Golden Age (i.e. from the 8th century to the 14th century).
The Present Times
Now if we look at the present times in the backdrop of above referred Hadith, we will see it perfectly correlated. Unfortunately, Muslims have lost the real faith and are more afraid of death and being subdued by the non Muslims. The plight and aggression against the Palestinians and Kashmiri Muslims is case in point. Despite some of the richest  Muslim countries with large armies, have the guts to bring an end to the miseries of Muslims. Not even condemnation in plain words is sounded subjected to aggression too and  any Muslim countries who seemingly fear of being perhaps losing their fortunes or even die if they supported the weak Muslims. This is the time that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ predicted and warned off.

This Hadith thus provides a profound warning about the spiritual, moral and intellectual decline of the Muslims, even when it is numerous in number. The root cause of this decline is identified as wahn, which is characterized by an excessive love of the world and a fear of death. These attitudes lead to a loss of substance, unity, and influence, making the community vulnerable to external threats. The Hadith serves as a reminder to Muslims to prioritize their faith, spiritual strength, and moral integrity, ensuring that their attachment to the world does not overshadow their commitment to the hereafter.
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān.
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
