99 Attributes of Allah: Al Jaleel - The Majestic

The attribute Al Jaleel or Al Jalīl is expressive of the majesty and might of Allah. He is the One who is great and above all in rank and dignity. Al Jaleel, the One who is above all, superior, independent. The One who is the owner and the source of all attributes of greatness and majesty.

The One whose greatness and majesty are immeasurable and cannot be comprehended by the senses. The One whose glorious nature is indicated by the great things that are created.

The term Jalīl is not specifically mentioned as one of the attributes of Allah in the Qur'ān. But the Attribute "al-Jaleel" is derived from Allah's absolute greatness. He is the Greatest of all Who exhibits his Glory and might in the signs He is made around us. Looking at the towering mountains, their peaks rising above the clouds leave one in awe, wondering how Majestic would be the Being Who created such monumental features which man can never even think of duplicating.

From the root j-l-l which has the following classical Arabic connotations:
  • to be supremely great
  • to be glorious, majestic
  • to be sublime
  • to be high, lofty, far above, independent
The word Jalāl comes from this same root and is translated as greatness, loftiness, sublime, majesty.

The Absolute al-Jaleel is Allah. The Attribute "al-Kabeer" describes the perfection of the Self, whereas "al-Jaleel" describes the perfection of His qualities.

This attribute has been added which clearly explains Allah Majestic Might, who is  Glorious, the Sublime and the Resplendent. The One who is attributed with Greatness of Power and Glory of Status.
