99 Attributes of Allah: Al Majid - The Glorious and Majestic

Allah is Al-Majīd " ٱلْمَجِيدُ " (pronounced Al Majeed), ,  The Glorious and Majestic, The Most Honorable and Praiseworthy, The All-Glorious.

No matter we praise Allah, our praises will always pint towards Allah's infinite Majesty and Glory for none other than He is worthy of such praises in superlative form, and the greatest honor, vast bounty and goodness belongs to Him.

Allah calls Himself Al-Majeed— The Glorious, The Most Honorable – on two occasions in the Quran:
قَالُوا أَتَعْجَبِينَ مِنْ أَمْرِ اللَّهِ ۖ رَحْمَتُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ عَلَيْكُمْ أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ ۚ إِنَّهُ حَمِيدٌ مَّجِيدٌ

"They said: 'Do you wonder at Allah's decree? Allah's mercy and His blessings be upon you, O people of the house. Surely, He is Praiseworthy, Glorified" (Surah 11. Hud: 73)

This verse is addressed to Prophet Abraham and his wife when they were given the blessed news of having a son at the age of almost 100 years. This little episode of Abraham's life comes in fitly as one of the illustrations of Allah's wonderful providence in His dealings with man. Abraham had had a tussle with his father on behalf of Truth and Unity (vi. 74); he had passed through the fire unscathed (xxi. 68-69); he had traveled to far countries, and was now ready to receive his great mission as the fountain-head of prophets in his old age. Humanly speaking it seemed impossible that he should have a son at his age, and yet it came to pass and became a corner-stone of sacred history.

Allah in all his infinite blessings and glory may grant any wish, which though may seem impossible, to His blessed and selected prophets and messengers, for it is essential nature of Al-Majīd to give liberally and bountifully

In Arabic language, Majeed comes from the root meem-jeem-daal, which points out to the attribute of glory and honor (majd). Majd refers to a complete authority and sovereignty. This root includes the meanings of being glorious, dignified, majestic and exceedingly generous. Thus Al-Majīd indicates the One whose essential nature is glorious, dignified, noble and honorable.

Abū Hāmid al-Ghazālī says that the name Al-Majīd expresses the combined meanings of al-Jalīl (the majestic), al-Wahhāb (the bestower) and al-Karīm (the generous).

Allah has also described the Holy Quran as majīd, saying, "Qaf. I swear by al-Quran al-majīd..." (Quran, 50:1). The Holy Quran is majīd because of the abundance of wealth of knowledge, ethics, and sublime objectives it contains and due to the benefits it contains; so, it is beneficial for man both in the life of this world and in the life to come.

99 Attributes of Allah: Al Jaleel - The Majestic

The attribute Al Jaleel or Al Jalīl is expressive of the majesty and might of Allah. He is the One who is great and above all in rank and dignity. Al Jaleel, the One who is above all, superior, independent. The One who is the owner and the source of all attributes of greatness and majesty.

The One whose greatness and majesty are immeasurable and cannot be comprehended by the senses. The One whose glorious nature is indicated by the great things that are created.

The term Jalīl is not specifically mentioned as one of the attributes of Allah in the Qur'ān. But the Attribute "al-Jaleel" is derived from Allah's absolute greatness. He is the Greatest of all Who exhibits his Glory and might in the signs He is made around us. Looking at the towering mountains, their peaks rising above the clouds leave one in awe, wondering how Majestic would be the Being Who created such monumental features which man can never even think of duplicating.

From the root j-l-l which has the following classical Arabic connotations:
  • to be supremely great
  • to be glorious, majestic
  • to be sublime
  • to be high, lofty, far above, independent
The word Jalāl comes from this same root and is translated as greatness, loftiness, sublime, majesty.

The Absolute al-Jaleel is Allah. The Attribute "al-Kabeer" describes the perfection of the Self, whereas "al-Jaleel" describes the perfection of His qualities.

This attribute has been added which clearly explains Allah Majestic Might, who is  Glorious, the Sublime and the Resplendent. The One who is attributed with Greatness of Power and Glory of Status.
