99 Attributes of Allāh: Al-Muʿmin - the Bestower of Security

Al-Muʿmin " ٱلْمُؤْمِنُ " - the Bestower of Security, the Source of Faith, the Remover of Fear is on of the 99 attributes of Allah. This attribute is mentioned in 23rd verse of Surah 59. Hashr along with many other attributes of Allah:

هُوَ اللّٰهُ الَّذِىۡ لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا هُوَۚ اَلۡمَلِكُ الۡقُدُّوۡسُ السَّلٰمُ الۡمُؤۡمِنُ الۡمُهَيۡمِنُ الۡعَزِيۡزُ الۡجَـبَّارُ الۡمُتَكَبِّرُؕ سُبۡحٰنَ اللّٰهِ عَمَّا يُشۡرِكُوۡنَ‏
He is Allah: there is no god but He: the King, the Holy, the All-Peace, the Giver of security, the Overseer, the Most Mighty, the Overpowering, the All-Great. Exalted be He from whatever they associate with Him.
The word Al-Mu'min is derived from amun, which means to secure from fear, and Mu'min is one who provides security to others. Allah has been called Al-Mu'min in the sense that He provides security to His creatures. His creatures are secure from the fear that He would ever wrong them, or deprive them of their rights, or allow their rewards to go to waste, or would violate the promises He has made with them. Then, since no object has been mentioned with this subject, but the epithet of Al-Mu'min has been used absolutely, it automatically gives the meaning that His security comprehends the entire universe and all that it contains. [6]
Mu'min or Mo'min is an Arabic Islamic term, frequently referenced in the Quran, meaning "believer". It denotes a person who has complete submission to the Will of Allah and has faith firmly established in his heart, i.e. a "faithful Muslim". Also, it is used as a name and one of the names of God in Islam. So when Allah says He is Al Mu'min, it means it is He alone who instills faith in the believers and guides them to the righteous path.

The Messenger of Allah has said, "Anyone who believes in Allah and the Last Day should bring security to his neighbor against his own misdeeds."

Please listen to the meaning of Al Mu'min attribute of Allah, very eloquently explained by Sheikh Shady Alsuleiman:

99 Attributes of Allah: Al-Hafīz - The Preserver, the All Watching

One of the 99 attributes of Allah is Al Ḥafīẓ " ٱلْحَفِيظُ " (pronounced Al Hafeez), which means The Preserver, the Protector, the Guardian, the Oft-Conservator and the All Watching.

"And he has no authority over them, but so that We may distinguish the one who believes in the hereafter from the one who is in doubt concerning it, and your Lord preserves all things" (Quran, 34:21)

The above verse from Surah Saba explains the attribute of Allah wherein it is being said that Allah is the One whose power preserves the heavens and the earth. The One who is the guardian and preserver of all the worlds.

Al Ḥafīẓ  comes from the verb ‘hifz – to preserve’ and literally means ‘to preserve, to guard and to protect’. In Surah 11 Hud, verse 57, it is said:

"If you, then, turn away (from the truth), know that I have delivered the message with which I was sent to you. Now my Lord will set up another people in place of you and you shall in no way be able to harm Him. Surely my Lord keeps a watch over everything."

"Those who have taken others than Him as their protectors beside Him, it is Allah Who oversees them; you are no guardian over them." (Surah 42. Ash-Shura: 6)

Al-Hafīz is the One who protects that which He has created, and Whose knowledge encompasses that which He has brought into existence. He protects His servants from falling into sin and disaster, and He takes care of them in all situations. He records the deeds of His slaves and the reward or punishment for that.

Al-Hafīz has two meanings: One is the opposite of oversight or forgetfulness, and its meaning is derived from knowing. When we say that the Almighty safeguards things, we mean that He knows them in all their quantities and intricacies, and that such knowledge is not altered by diminution, oversight, negligence, or forgetfulness. The other is that al-Hafeez safeguards things against loss: He guards them, and all His characteristics and perfection are above extinction. He has also said: "Attend constantly to prayers and to the middle prayers, and stand up truly obedient to Allah" (Quran, 2:238), and, "His Dominion overspreads the heavens and the earth, and their upholding wearies Him not. He is All-High, All-Glorious." (Quran, 2:255).

Related names:
  • Raqīb refers to the One who has the attribute of watchfulness.
  • Wakīl refers to the One who is the trusted administrator.
  • Māni' - the One who protects and defends against harmful situations.
  • Muhaymin refers to the One who is the ever-watchful guardian and protector.
Thus one who contemplates on the meanings of al-Hafeez and eagerly longs for Him with all his heart is one in whose heart the love for His Lord is borne; the Lord Who protects His servant even when the latter is disobedient to Him, falling short of worshiping Him, lagging behind in adoring Him.

He reawakens his heart from its inattentiveness. It is then that Allah makes his heart like a preserved treasure of secrets, so he takes courageous stands, safeguarding his senses against committing sins, protecting his heart against spiritually harmful insinuations.

99 Attributes of Allah: Al Ghaffar - The Repeatedly Forgiving

Allah is Al-Ghaffār " ٱلْغَفَّارُ " The Repeatedly Forgiving, Absolute Forgiver, Pardoner, Condoner [He Who is Ready to Pardon and Forgive].

One of the many attributes of Allah is that He is the Most Forgiving and Repeatedly Forgiving, for as long as a believers realizes his bad acts or sins, repents and asks forgiveness of Allah. This attributes is repeated many a times in the Qur'an to reassure believers that He is there to forgive their sins as long as they continue turn to him:

وَاِنِّىۡ لَـغَفَّارٌ لِّمَنۡ تَابَ وَاٰمَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحًـا ثُمَّ اهۡتَدٰى‏

(Surah 20 Ta Ha: 82) "But I am indeed Most Forgiving to him who repents and believes and does righteous works and keeps to the Right Way."

Allah exhibits his attribute of Perpetual Forgiver in the above said verse and reassures all believers that He will forgive all those who repent and thereafter do righteous things. Here one must remember that repentance has four stages: (1) Repentance: to refrain from rebellion, disobedience, shirk or disbelief, (2) Faith: sincere belief in Allah and the Messenger and the Book and the Hereafter, (3) Righteous works: to do good deeds according to the instructions of Allah and His Messenger, (4) Guidance: to follow the right way steadfastly and to refrain from straying into any wrong path.

And:

(Surah 71 Nuh: 10) I said to them: “Ask forgiveness from your Lord; surely He is Most Forgiving.

We must always be repenting and asking forgiveness f Allah. You never know He likes your true repentance and forgives all your sins. But asking Al Ghaffar is the first step. If one shies away and does not ask for forgiveness, how would he be forgiven. One has to invoke Allah's mercy for being forgiven.

Al Ghaffar stems from the root gh-f-r which means (1) to cover, veil, conceal, hide (2) to pardon, to forgive, to set aright (3) to cover a thing to protect it from dirt.

In Qastalānī's commentary on Bukhārī, it is said that the root gh-f-r means a covering or protection which is either between man and the commission of sin [protecting, or watching over], or between sin and the effects of that sin [forgiving, veiling or concealing].

Here we must also remember that Allah veils and shields most of the sins and keeps our honour intact. Had it not been Allah's countless bounties and being oft forgiving attribute, most of us would stand naked and exposed of our sins we commit everyday. He does so that being grateful for this great favour of His, we may repent and earnestly request Him to condone our sins and misdeeds, which may otherwise lead us to the Hell Fire.

It may be added here that the root gh-f-r has given rise to three Beautiful Names that are all used in the Qur'ān: Ghaffār, Ghafūr and Ghāfir. We have already written about the attribute Al GhafūrHowever, only Ghaffār and Ghafūr were included in the list of 99 Names narrated by Tirmidhi. In al-Nihāyah (a dictionary of hadīth), it is said that Ghāfir refers to the One who protects us from the commission of sins, and that Ghafūr refers to the One who forgives our sins and faults.

The word "Ghāfir" appears in the Quran as under:

غَافِرِ الذَّنۡۢبِ وَقَابِلِ التَّوۡبِ شَدِيۡدِ الۡعِقَابِ ذِى الطَّوۡلِؕ لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا هُوَؕ اِلَيۡهِ الۡمَصِيۡرُ‏

(40:3) the Forgiver of sins, the Accepter of repentance, the Stern in retribution, the Bountiful. There is no god but He. To Him are all destined to return.

One of the companions of the Messenger of Allah was asked once, "What did you hear the Messenger of Allah say with regard to one's silent supplication?" He answered by saying that he had heard the Messenger of Allah say, "Allah, the most Honored, the Most Great, will touch His servant who believes in Him with His mercy by veiling his sin from the public in the life of this world, and in the life hereafter He will ask him about each and every sin and fault he had committed. Once he admits all of them and realizes that he is going to perish on their account, the Almighty will say, `I have veiled your sins in the past short life, and in this one I am going to forgive them.' Then he will be handed the book of his good deeds."

In view of Allah's attribute of Repeatedly Forgiving, we must not hesitate to ask forgiveness umpteen number of times for it is Allah's promise that He would forgive each repenting believer till death finally starts knocking on his door. So never be disappointed and dejected in case you sin, for the doors of repentance is always open.

99 Attributes of Allah: Al Badi' - The Originator

Allah is Al-Badiʿ "ٱلْبَدِيعُ" - (pronounced Al Badee) The Originator, The Incomparable, The Unattainable, The Beautiful.

"The Originator of the heavens and the earth. When He decrees a matter, He only says to it: "Be!" - and it is". (Al-Baqarah 2:117)

A similar description of this attribute of Allah appears in Surah 6 Al An'am:101:

بَدِيعُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ أَنَّى يَكُونُ لَهُ وَلَدٌ وَلَمْ تَكُنْ لَهُ صَاحِبَةٌ وَخَلَقَ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ وَهُوَ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمٌ

"[He is] Originator of the heavens and the earth. How could He have a son when He does not have a companion and He created all things? And He is, of all things, Knowing."

Allah, All Mighty, is the Innovator of the heavens and the earth and the One Who created the heavens and the earth according to no former example and with no helper or teacher. It is He, Glory to Him, Who innovated the essences, properties, qualities, sizes, shapes, forms, colors, movements, …etc, of all things, including mankind, animals and plants. In other words, everything in the entire universe shows clearly that Allah, All Mighty, is the “Badee’” (Innovator) of the heavens and the earth, that He, Glory to Him, is “Badee’” (Unique) in Himself, i.e. nothing is the like of Him, whether in His Divine Self, Attributes, Acts, or Creativity.

Allah is The Originator, One who originates, commences, invents and creates all that exists, from something that never existed before and according to no former example and without getting help or information from anyone.. Those who associate others with Allah should be questioned: Can their deities originate anything that never existed before. If no, which certainly will be, then their deity can not be god, but a mere fallacy of mind.

Linguistically speaking, the word “Badee’” is derived from the verb “Abda’a” (to innovate), i.e. “to do or create something unprecedented”.

Dr. Muhammad Ratib An-Nabulsi, while explaining the meaning of the attribute Al Badi' writes [5]:
The best airplane a man has ever made is by no means comparable to a bird. Not only that, but also all man-made things are mere imitations or copies of things existing in the universe, which is nothing but one of the countless creatures of Allah, All Mighty. It is only Allah, All Mighty, Alone, Who created the whole universe according to no former example. Who said that the Earth should be round? Who said that the earth should go round itself and round the Sun?
Who created light? Who made the Sun a source of light and warmth? Who gave water its properties? Who gave the air its properties? Who gave each and every element its properties? If all solids melted at the same temperature, and if all substances had the same properties, the whole universe would be a gigantic mass of gas, liquid or solid. In the whole universe, with all its stars, planets, galaxies, and other heavenly objects, with their movements and distances among them: the entire universe with all the things therein and the earth with all things thereon; no two leaves are like each other. This means that Allah, All Mighty is All-Embracing and All-Sufficient for His creatures’ needs, and His Creativity is Infinite. Also, no human being can imagine or draw a leaf that does not exist in the world, simply because there are innumerable kinds, forms, shapes and colors of leaves of trees.
That is why one of the knowledgeable religious scholars, said, “If two leaves were similar to each other, Allah’s Creativity would not be Infinite.”

99 Attributes of Allah: As Salam - The Giver of Peace

As-Salām " ٱلْسَّلَامُ " The Giver of Peace, The Ever-Tranquil is He, Allāh, the Almighty, The Source of Peace, The Flawless, The Source of Wholeness and Well-Being.

Everyone wishes to be in peace and let others be in peace too. All greetings around the world begin with peace and Who else would be better giver and wisher of peace can be other than the Creator of the world? Allah, the As-Salām is the ultimate source of giving peace and tranquility to the entire mankind.

The Arabic word Salām (pronounced Salaam) comes from the root letters seen-laam-meem (S - L - M) that is salama which denotes safety, security, freedom and immunity. From the same root originates the Muslim greeting “salaam”. In Surah al-Furqan Ayah 63, it is said, “and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace,” meaning they don’t want anything to do with their conversation.

As Salām as an attribute of Allah appears, along with many other attributes of Allah, in the 23rd verse of Surah 59. Al-Hashr:

(59:23) He is Allah: there is no god but He: the King, the Holy, the All-Peace, the Giver of security, the Overseer, the Most Mighty, the Overpowering, the All-Great. Exalted be He from whatever they associate with Him.

Here in this verse above, the attribute As Salām as used in the original means peace and Secure, Allah’s being called As Salām means that He is peace and safety personified. He is far exalted that some calamity or weakness or defect should befall Him, or His Perfection should suffer a decline or blemish.

Many seek peace by struggling, battling and trying to impose their will on others, yet external peace will only prevail as a reflection of inner peace. The only path to outer peace is awareness of the tranquil depths of  inner peace, and the only source of such inner peace is the One known as as-Salām.

When Muslims greet each other and say “Asalaam o Alaykum (السلام عليكم),” we mean, “You’re safe from me and you’ll not receive any sharr [evil] from me.” Therefore, it is incumbent upon the other Muslim an appropriate response to such a greeting is "and upon you be peace" (wa-ʻalaykum as-salām).

The Hebrew greeting shālôm ʻalêḵem, (שלום עליכם) is the equivalent of the Arabic expression "Asalaam o Alaykum (السلام عليكم)", the response being עליכם שלום ʻalêḵem shālôm, 'upon you be peace'.

(Surah 10. Yunus: 25) (You are being lured by this ephemeral world) although Allah calls you to the abode of peace and guides whomsoever He wills to a straightway.

In the verse above, Jannah has been called Dar-us-Salām because it will be free of all grief, death, worries, tensions, fatigues, enmities, hatred, and will be a place of safety and tranquility.

From the root word S-L-M, following words are derived, which all mainly mean peace:
  • سلام salām 'Peace'
  • السلام عليكم as-salāmu ʿalaykum 'Peace be upon you'
Islām 'Acceptance, entrusting one's wholeness to God'
Muslim 'One who Accepts'
  • تسليم taslīm – 'delivering SLM – to give a salutation or a submission'
Istislām –'the act of submission'
  • مستسلم mustaslim – One who submits – no longer seeking opposition/conflict, the one who has submitted
  • سالم sālim – 'subject of SLM' – its SLM, 'the vase is SLM', 'the vase is whole, unbroken'
  • مُسَلَّم musallam – 'undisputed'
The most precarious situations to which human beings are exposed are three: The time of birth, the time of death, and the time of resurrection. So Allah honored Prophet Yahya (peace be upon him) in all these three situations, granting him peace, safety and security against their woes. He saved him from the perils of all these three situations and granted him security against fear.

Muslims are repeatedly enjoined by the Holy Quran to disseminate peace and to be receptive to those who offer it:

O you who believe! Enter into peace one and all... (2:208) And if they incline to peace, do incline to it too and trust in Allah. (8:61) And the servants of al-Rahman are the ones who walk on earth humbly, and when the ignorant ones address them, they say: Salam (Peace)! (25:63) And when those who believe in Our Signs come to you, say: Peace be on you! Your Lord has ordained mercy on Himself... (6:54) So turn away from them and say, Peace! For they shall soon come to know. (43:89)

The greeting of peace is an integral part of the creed of Islam. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would quite often enjoin the Muslims to disseminate the greeting of peace among them. The Prophet of Allah has been quoted as saying at many a instance:

"Disseminate the greeting of peace among you so you may achieve peace and security. Whoever upholds three things will have combined in him the meaning of conviction: (1) fairness to his own self, (2) disseminating of the greeting of peace to everyone, and (3) spending wisely out of what he saves." Afshu al Salama baynakum: Disseminate the greeting of peace among you.

In one of his supplications, the Messenger of Allah used to say, "Lord! Make us harbingers of peace to Your friends!" The Holy Quran tells us that the name of Paradise is "Dar al Salam," the abode of peace; He, Glory and Exaltation to Him, says,

(Surah 6. Al-An'am:127) Theirs shall be an abode of peace with their Lord - their Protector - in recompense for all they have done.

We must therefore always be seeking peace, security and safety from none other than Allah, the As Salām, for there is no safety in the whole universe except that which is attributed to Allah for He is the Creator Who designs and controls all things. If you are afraid, remember Him, and He will fill your heart with peace. If you get connected with Him, He purifies you from all defects and faults. He guides you to peaceful ways in your business, in your marriage and in your relationships. If you adhere to His commands and enjoinments in the Qur’an, He will guide you in everything and every issue, (work, provision, health, marriage and children) in peaceful ways. He invites you to the Home of peace that is Jannah.

99 Attributes of Allah: Al Haqq - The Truth

Allah, the Creator of the entire Universe is The Truth, " ٱلْحَقُّ " The Only One Certainly Sound and Genuine in Truth, The Ultimate Reality.

Then all are restored to Allah, their True Lord. Behold, His is the judgement. He is the swiftest of those who take account.(Surah 6 Al-An'am: 62)

The only Reality: Al-Haqq, the Truth, the only True One. The point is that our illusions of the life of this lower world now vanish, when we are rendered back to God, from Whom we came. And now we find that so far from the results of our actions being delayed, they follow more swiftly than we can express in terms of Time. Here is the answer to the taunt of those who were impatient of the working of God's Plans (Surah 6 Al-An'am: 57-58).

There is no reality or truth except the Ultimate Reality and the Truth, that is One True God, with no associates, no helpers or assistants. This is the Reality, this is The Truth. The One who acts in accord with the needs of every situation. The One through whom all righteousness, justice, and truth are revealed.

In fact His existence is undeniable and nothing else can exist except through Him.

"Allah is the Truth, and He gives life to the dead, and He has power over all things." (Surah 22 Al-Hajj:6)

The verse clearly means three things: (1) Allah is telling the truth and you are wrong in presuming that there is no possibility of life-after-death. (2) Allah’s existence is not merely a supposition but it is a reality. He is not only the first cause but has supreme authority, and is conducting every affair in the universe according to His Will, Knowledge and Wisdom. (3) All His designs and works are based on truth and are, therefore, serious, meaningful and full of wisdom.

Haqq comes from the root haa-qaaf-qaaf, which points to three main meanings. (1) To be true, genuine, substantial and real. (2) To be right and to be suitable to the requirements of wisdom and justice. (3) To be established as fact, to be unavoidable and to happen without doubt. The forth main meaning is to be proper and to be in accord with the needs of the situation.

This root appears 287  times in the Quran in seven derived forms. Examples of these forms include haqqa (“proved true”), ahaqqu  (“more right”), al haqq (“the truth”) and al haqqatu (“the inevitable reality”).

So, exalted be Allah, the True King! There is no god but He, the Lord of the Great Throne. (Surah 23. Al-Muminun: 116)

That is Allah is The Only True King. He is above this that He should create you without any purpose and that you may associate partners with Him with impunity. His words are the truth, His actions are the truth, meeting Him (in the Hereafter) is the truth, His messengers were sent in truth, His scriptures are the truth and His religion is the truth. Worshiping only Him alone, without taking partners, is the truth, and everything related to Him is the truth. &"That is because Allah is the Truth, and that which they call upon other than Him is falsehood, and because Allah is the Most High, the Grand.

Allah asks in Surah 10 Yunus verse 31: "Ask them: 'Who provides you with sustenance out of the heavens and the earth? Who holds mastery over your hearing and sight? Who brings forth the living from the dead and the dead from the living? Who governs all affairs of the universe?' They will surely say: 'Allah.' Tell them: 'Will you, then, not shun (going against reality)?"

And then replies for the ignorant who find no answer for they know the reality and the truth but due to their stubborn are not ready to confess:

فَذٰلِكُمُ اللّٰهُ رَبُّكُمُ الۡحَـقُّ ۚ فَمَاذَا بَعۡدَ الۡحَـقِّ اِلَّا الضَّلٰلُ ۚ فَاَنّٰى تُصۡرَفُوۡنَ‏

"Such, then, is Allah, your true Lord. And what is there after truth but error? How, then, are you being turned away?" (Surah 10 Yunus :32)

That is, as you yourselves admit that Allah alone is your real Provider, Owner and Master, He alone is your true Lord, and, therefore, entitled to your servitude and worship. How have you, then, made others as partners with Him? This question has been posed at many places in the Quran to bring home the truth to the common people, but at every place the passive voice has been employed in order to keep back the names of the misguiding ones so that their followers should consider the matter coolly and objectively. This also contains a valuable piece of advice for those engaged in propagation work. By avoiding the names of the misguiding ones, the Quran has taken away a very strong weapon from the hands of those, who could otherwise incite the followers that their revered leaders were being made the target of ridicule and criticism.

"Al-Haqq" is the antithesis of falsehood. According to one tradition, the Messenger of Allah has said, "Labbayka Haqqan Haqqa!" that is, "Here I am, O Truth, O Truthful One, here I am, in obedience to You! Here I am, O antithesis of falsehood!" Surely He is the truth beyond any doubt. Allah has said, "Then are they sent back to Allah, their Master, the true One" (Quran, 6:62). He has also said, This is so because Allah is the Truth, and that which they call upon besides Him is falsehood. (31:30) And Allah will show the truth to be true by His words. (10:82)

Know this attribute of Allah, each Muslim and believer should embed this essence of this attribute of Allah in his personality. And should ooze out in his words and actions when dealing with others for a true believer does not hoodwink other for his personal gains. Even if by speaking the truth, a believer is suffering personal loss, he should be truthful for his reward for his truthfulness lies with Allah who may even bless him much more than the loss so suffered that may not be in his wild imagination.

99 Attributes of Allah: Al Aẓīm - The Most Supreme

Al Aẓīm " ٱلْعَظِيمُ " (pronounced "Al-Az`eem" )- The Most Supreme, The Most Great, Ever-Magnificent, The Most Exalted and The Absolute Dignified.

Al Aẓīm is one of those attributes of Allah that describe His Absolute Dignity and Magnificence for none is worthy of praises other than One Allah:
فَسَبِّحْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الْعَظِيمِ
" So glorify the name of your Lord, the Most Supreme." (Quran, Surah 56 Al-Waqi'a: 96)

In the verse above, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has been asked to mention Allah's blessed attribute and proclaim that He is free from and far above the defects and faults and weaknesses that the pagans and polytheists ascribe to Him, and which underlie every creed of disbelief and every argument that is presented by the deniers of the Hereafter.

Uqbah bin Amir Juhni relates that when this verse was sent down the Prophet (peace be upon him) commanded that the people put it in their ruku, i.e. they should recite Subhana-Rabbi-yal-Azim in the position of ruku in the Prayer. And when the verse Sabbi-hismi-Rabbi-kal-Aala was sent down, he enjoined that they put it in their sajdah, i.e. they should recite Subhana-Rabbi-yal-Aala in sajdah. (Musnad Ahmad, Abu Daud, Ibn Majah, Ibn Hibban, Hakim). This show that even the most minor details of the procedure enjoined by the Prophet (peace be upon him) for the Prayer are derived from the allusions given in the Quran.

ٱلْعَظِيمُ is from the root 'a-z-m which in classical Arabic means (1) to be great, large, big, (2) to be vast, huge, enormous, (3) to be great in rank, importance or dignity, (4) to be imposing, powerful, superior, (5) to be magnificent, honored, revered, sublime, (6) to be immense, stupendous, lofty, and (7) to be above imperfection.

The famous verse 255 of Surah Al Baqarah, known as the Ayat ul Kursi describes this vert attribute of Allah in the most befitting words:

"Allah, the Ever-Living, the Self-Subsisting by Whom all subsist, there is no god but He. Neither slumber seizes Him, nor sleep; to Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. Who is there who might intercede with Him save with His leave? He knows what lies before them and what is hidden from them, whereas they cannot attain to anything of His knowledge save what He wills them to attain. His Dominion overspreads the heavens and the earth, and their upholding wearies Him not.
He is All-High, The Most Supreme

In fact Al Aẓīm is the One whose greatness cannot be grasped by vision; it is beyond all limits, so much so that no human intellect can ever absorb it. If we consider the greatness of Al-Az`eem, we will realize that anyone besides Him is insignificant. The human being, no matter how knowledgeable, is limited in the scope and content of his knowledge. How can you compare such a limited amount of knowledge with that of the Almighty?

99 Attributes of Allah: Al-Ghafur - The Ever Forgiving

Al Ghafūr (الغفور) - The Ever Forgiving, The Pardoner: This attribute of Allah is a fresh breeze for those who err and sin and are ever repentant for their dark deeds. And if they are sincere in realizing their mistakes and are truly repentant, they should be rest assured that Allah is The Forgiver of Sins and Faults. He is the Ever Forgiving and Ultimate Pardoner.

"Tell them, (O Prophet): “My servants who have committed excesses against themselves, do not despair of Allah's Mercy. Surely Allah forgives all sins. He is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.”  [Surah 39. Az-Zumar: 53]

In Surah 40. Al-Mu'min: verse 3, the same attribute of Allah has been explained:

غَافِرِ الذَّنۡۢبِ وَقَابِلِ التَّوۡبِ شَدِيۡدِ الۡعِقَابِ ذِى الطَّوۡلِؕ لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا هُوَؕ اِلَيۡهِ الۡمَصِيۡرُ‏

"the Forgiver of sins, the Accepter of repentance, the Stern in retribution, the Bountiful. There is no god but He. To Him are all destined to return."

In this verse the attribute brings hope and causes inducement, which has been mentioned so that the people who have led lives of sin, should not despair but should reform themselves with the hope that if they refrained from their behavior even now, they could still be redeemed by Allah’s mercy. Here, one should understand well that forgiving of sins and accepting of repentance are not necessarily one and the same thing, but in most cases Allah forgives sins even without the repentance. For example, a person commits errors as well as does good and his good acts become the means of forgiveness for his mistakes, whether or not he had opportunity to show repentance for the errors, but might even have forgotten them. Likewise, all the troubles and hardships and diseases and calamities that afflict man and cause him grief in the world, serve as penance for his mistakes. That is why mention of forgiveness of sins has been made separately from the acceptance of repentance. But one should remember that the concession of forgiveness of errors without repentance only refers to those believers, who are free from defiance and who committed sins due to human weakness and not persistence in pride and sin.

Allah is the Creator of all His Creations. He bestows upon them His countless bounties without any differentiation of who believe in Him or do not , who all worship Him as One True God, or those who add associates with Him. For He in His infinite ability to forgive, doesn't punish those who do not believe in Him. But for believers, He places restrictions to test their firmness in belief and faith and restricts them from eating some of His own creations:

فَكُلُوۡا مِمَّا غَنِمۡتُمۡ حَلٰلاً طَيِّبًا ۖ  وَّاتَّقُوا اللّٰهَ ؕ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ غَفُوۡرٌ رَّحِيۡمٌ
"So eat that which you have obtained - for it is lawful and clean--and fear Allah. Surely Allah is Ever Forgiving, Most Merciful." [Surah 8. Al-Anfal: 69]

For believers, Allah forbids meat of pigs and swines while all others devour on their meat. But for true believers, these are forbidden and believers restrain from eating swines and pigs willingly, with no questions asked for it has been so ordained by Allah.

The word Ghafur " غَفُوۡرٍ "is from the root gh-f-r which in classical Arabic mean (1) to cover, veil, conceal, hide, (2) to pardon, to forgive, to set aright, and (3) to cover a thing to protect it from dirt. It may be however noted that the root gh-f-r has given rise to three Beautiful Names that are all used in the Qur'ān: Ghaffār, Ghafūr and Ghāfir. However, only Ghaffār and Ghafūr were included in the list of 99 Names narrated by Tirmidhi.

Sheikh Tosun Bayrak portrays the differences between Ghaffār, Ghafūr and Ghāfir as: [2]
... al-Ghāfir, the veiler of our faults from the eyes of other men; al-Ghafūr, who keeps the knowledge of our faults even from the angels; and al-Ghaffār who relieves us from the suffering of continual remembrance of our faults.
"This is by way of accommodation from Him Who is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.” [Surah 41. Ha-Meem: 32]

Al Ghafur also means to cover, conceal, and shield. When Allah forgives a sin, it means that He covers it and conceals it. Al-Ghafoor is the One who does not expose the sins of His Slaves. He shields and protects His Slaves from the consequences of their sins and still forgives even though He is All-Aware of the wrong they committed.

The attribute Al Ghafur is synonymous to yet another attribute of Allah: Al-'Afūw, which also means the One Who erases sins and disregards acts of disobedience. This concept approximates the sense of Al-Ghafur, (the One Who forgives much. Al-Ghufran indicates a veiling (of the sin) whereas Al-'Afūw indicates an erasing, and the erasing (of sin) is more far-reaching (than the simple veiling of it).

The last part of the last verse (286) of Surah 2. Al Baqarah is an all encompassing prayer for the believers which they must recite much to often to seek forgiveness of their sins for it is Allah, the Al Ghafur' alone Who can rid us of the burden of our sins and forgive us:

ۚرَبَّنَا وَلَا تُحَمِّلۡنَا مَا لَا طَاقَةَ لَنَا بِهٖ ۚ وَاعۡفُ عَنَّا وَاغۡفِرۡ لَنَا وَارۡحَمۡنَا اَنۡتَ مَوۡلٰٮنَا فَانۡصُرۡنَا عَلَى الۡقَوۡمِ الۡكٰفِرِيۡنَ

"Our Lord! Lay not on us burdens which we do not have the power to bear. And overlook our faults, and forgive us, and have mercy upon us. You are our Guardian; so grant us victory against the unbelieving folk.”

This is an excellent example of The Ever Forgiving attribute of Allah as He Himself is telling them how to present their request for forgiveness and the granting of the request becomes virtually assured. Hence, this prayer greatly strengthened the hearts of the Muslims. Moreover, this prayer implicitly taught the Muslims not to allow their feelings to flow along undesirable channels. They should instead mould them into a prayer to their Lord.

In the verse above, it is also amply highlighted that mere forgiveness is not enough; we also need mercy so that we will not be humiliated and embarrassed. This mercy, which we want, is the manifestation of the name al-Ghafur and bears a meaning beyond pardoning.

The Arabic word astaghfirullāh  (sometimes written as astghfrallāh, estagfurullāh or estaferallāh) is from this same gh-f-r root, and is an invocation of Divine Protection having a range of possible connotations that include Allāh please forgive me, Allāh please hide away my faults, Allāh please watch over me and protect me from faults. [2]

May Allah forgive us of all of our sins and mistakes, committed knowingly or unknowingly and also help us to forgive those who have wronged us. For it is of no use asking forgiveness from Allah, but not forgiving those who expect mercy from us.
