How a few actions by a believer on Friday (Youm al Jumu'ah) can immensely reward him

Youm al Jumu'ah assumes a very important a day in the lives of Muslims all over the world, for it is the day when the otherwise noon prayer (Salat al Dhur) is converted in Jumu'ah congregational prayer, which is obligatory to be prayed in a masjid.

We have shared many posts, based on verses from Qur'an and Hadiths / Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ previously. Today we add another important Hadith which spells out a few actions for a believer for on Youm al Jumu'ah which are immensely rewarding. And if we follow these directions of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, we will reap its rewards equal to fasting for the whole year.

This Hadith is mentioned in Sunan Abi Dawud (Book # 1 Purification (Kitab Al-Taharah): كتاب الطهارة / Chapter # 131 Performing Ghusl for the Friday Prayer / باب  فِي الْغُسْلِ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ  ) as Hadith number # 345, quoted herein under:

Narrated by Aws ibn Aws ath-Thaqafi:
I heard the apostle of Allah (ﷺ) say: If anyone makes (his wife) wash and he washes himself on Friday, goes out early (for Friday prayer), attends the sermon from the beginning, walking, not riding, takes his seat near the imam, listens attentively, and does not indulge in idle talk, he will get the reward of a year's fasting and praying at night for every step he takes.

And believe me, these actions are not at all difficult to do and yet the rewards embodied in these are so immense that every believing man and woman would like to reap every Friday for the rest of their lives.
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.
وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

Note: When we mention God in our posts, we mean One True God, we call Allah in Islam, with no associates. Allah is the Sole Creator of all things, and that Allah is all-powerful and all-knowing. Allah has no offspring, no race, no gender, no body, and is unaffected by the characteristics of human life.

Importance of Ṣalāt al-Jumuʿah (The Friday Congregational Prayer)

Last Friday, we shared a post on the desirables before the Ṣalāt al-Jumuʿah ( صَلَاة ٱلْجُمُعَة, ), the Friday prayer or Congregational prayer. Now in this post we are sharing a video in which eminent Muslim scholar and preacher Dr Israr Ahmed (may Allah bless him) dwell on the attendance of the Ṣalāt al-Jumuʿah.

But before we share the video, let us a recap of the 9th verse of Surah 62. Al-Jumuah which states the importance of this obligatory prayer for all Muslims over the world::
( 9 )   O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew.

Now having known the desirables for this specific day, we now turn to the prayer itself and know are exempted from this prayer and who are not excused from it and that they must attend the prayer, with some exceptions.

The Ṣalāt al-Jumuʿah is mandatory for all adult Muslim men. Those exempted from the Ṣalāt al-Jumuʿah include:
  • Slaves, whose masters do not allow them to attend the Ṣalāt al-Jumuʿah (This may also include people employed on jobs wherein company policies do not allow them time out)
  • Women, though they are free to join the Ṣalāt al-Jumuʿah if adequate arrangements for them exist
  • Children
  • Sick who are unable to go to the masjid
Now over to eminent Muslim scholar Dr Israr Ahmed (may Allah be pleased with him) elaborating the obligation of attending the Ṣalāt al-Jumuʿah:

What is Desirable before the Ṣalāt al-Jumuʿah (Friday congregational prayer)

Ṣalāt al-Jumuʿah ( صَلَاة ٱلْجُمُعَة, ), the Friday prayer or Congregational prayer  is the obligatory prayer for all Muslims around the world to be offered in the masjid (mosque). Its importance has been amply highlighted in the Surah 62 Al Jumuʿah:
( 9 )   O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew.
This verse was revealed at a time when salat had been made obligatory, yet people preferred to carryon with their trade for the considered a few pennies more than the prayer itself. The people being negligent in that on hearing the call to the Prayer they would not hasten to it but would remain occupied in their worldly activities and trade and business transactions. Therefore, Allah sent down this verse to make the people realize and appreciate the importance of the call and the Prayer and to exhort them to hasten to perform it as a duty.

* Read exegesis of Al Jumu'ah  (already posted)

Now here are few things that one must keep in mind:
  • The Jumu'ah prayer does not take more than one hour at best, that is taking a bath, wearing appropriate clothes, apply some perfume, and got to the masjid, listen to the Khutba of the prayer leader, offer the prayer in congregation and go home or attend to his business.
  • This means the entire day before the prayer and after the prayer is free for him to continue with his daily chores. This is unlike the Jews sacred day where they restrict them for worship for the entire day and do not do any worldly chores. Thus Muslims should not have an excuse to spare one hour out of the day time for attending the obligation of offering Jumu'ah prayer in congregation in a masjid.
  • Now what about the time before the Jumu'ah prayer? Although, nothing specific has been spelt out but a hadith of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ lays immense stress on certain "desirables" before the Jumu'ah prayer. And these desirables commence from the dawn break till the termination of the Jumu'ah prayer in congregation.
And what are these desirables?

Please listen to the lecture by eminent Muslim scholar Dr Israr Ahmed (may Allah be pleased with him) elaborating the desired things on the Day of Jumuʿah:
