Selected verses from Al-Qurʾān about Specific Subject: Man’s Regrets

We all live in a world of fallacies, dreams and ambitions. And to attain our ambitions, most of us can go to any extent, whether adopting right or wrong approaches. While doing so, we wrong and hurt so many people to our advantage, yet do not care for their lamentations and curses. We also enjoy our lives, dancing, drinking, free sex and everything that Satan leads us into.

All such times, most of us forget about the derailment we are suffering, forgetting our end and a life that we have to ultimately live forever when we will be resurrected, whether we believe in resurrection or not. But the reality will unfold one day when we will be made to answer our wrongdoings and sins. Judgement Day will be a day when there will be no turning back to make amends.

It would be then the stark reality of truth will unfold which has been conveyed to us by the Divine Scriptures and the prophets and messengers of Allah. But then, it would be too late, except man doomed with his regrets as mentioned in Qur'an at many a place. Some of these are shared below:
We will add more posts specific to Man's Regrets in our future posts. In the meantime, let us steer our lives to the life as prescribed for us by our Lord, and not as being lead us into by the Satan.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.
وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Note: When we mention God in our posts, we mean One True God, we call Allah in Islam, with no associates. Allah is the Sole Creator of all things, and that Allah is all-powerful and all-knowing. Allah has no offspring, no race, no gender, no body, and is unaffected by the characteristics of human life.

Man's Regrets: Would that we were brought back to life? Then we would not give the lie to the signs of our Lord

Man has always been ungrateful. Whenever Allah sent prophets and messengers to them so that they follow the one true path that would ultimately lead them to eternal prosperity and wellbeing, he has always negated the Divine messages and preferred to live a life of worldly joys and lewdness. And whenever he was told that there would be life after this worldly life is over and that he would be resurrected to answer for the sinful life he had enjoyed, he just mocked the prophets and ridiculed them for they think that worldly life is all that there is and once a man dies and becomes dust, how come he be lifted alive again and made to appear before his Creator.

But when reality would unfold and he would find him standing on the edge of the raging fire of hell, he would cry out to be sent back to worldly life again so as to make amends. For such sinners, the following 27th verse of Surah 6. Al An'am was revealed:

وَلَوۡ تَرٰٓى اِذۡ وُقِفُوۡا عَلَى النَّارِ فَقَالُوۡا يٰلَيۡتَنَا نُرَدُّ وَلَا نُكَذِّبَ بِاٰيٰتِ رَبِّنَا وَنَكُوۡنَ مِنَ الۡمُؤۡمِنِيۡنَ‏
(6:27) If you could but see when they shall be made to stand by the Fire! They will plead: 'Would that we were brought back to life? Then we would not give the lie to the signs of our Lord and would be among the believers.
Then it would be too late and even Allah would tell them that one life wasn't enough when prophets after prophets brought them His warnings? And even if they are given a life again, they would still revert to their worldly enjoyments and set aside any advice of prophets to follow the true path.

Ibn Kathir explains
The above said verse means that they lie when they say they wish to go back to this life so that they can embrace the faith. Allah states that even if they were sent back to the life of this world, they will again commit the disbelief and defiance that they were prohibited.

( وَإِنَّهُمْ لَكَـذِبُونَ and indeed they are liars.) in their statement that ("Would that we were but sent back! Then we would not deny the Ayat of our Lord, and we would be of the believers!' Nay, what they had been concealing before has become manifest to them. But if they were returned, they would certainly revert to that which they were forbidden. And indeed, they are liars. And they said: "There is no (other life) but our (present) life of this world, and never shall we be resurrected.')

Verse By Verse Quran Study Circle Explanation: Wishes and Hopes Do Not Help One When He Sees the Torment - There are three basic principles of Islam: Tawheed [Oneness of Allah], Prophethood and Belief in the Hereafter. All other articles of faith fall under these three. These principles guide human beings regarding who they are and what their purpose in life is; whoever understands these finds guidance.

In this ayah, Allah subhanahu wa ta`ala mentions the condition of the disbelievers when they are made to stand before the Fire on the Day of Resurrection.
If you could see when they will be held over the (Hell) Fire! They will say, “Would that we were but sent back (to the world)! Then we would not deny the Ayat of our Lord, and we would be of the believers!”
The word wuqifu [وُقِفُواْ] is from the root letters wau-qaf-fa [waqf] and it means “to stand, to come to stand or pause”. Such as waqouf-e-Arafah, the standing on the Arafat. The wrongdoers and the deniers of the truth will be detained and forced by the angels to stand by the edges of Hell, and to observe the horrifying punishment far beyond their imagination.

Witnessing the chains and restraints of the Day of Resurrection, along with seeing the horrible, momentous conditions in the Fire they will wish to be sent back to the worldly life in order to perform righteous deeds, refrain from disbelieving in the Signs of their Lord and be among the believers.
In Surah Bani Israeel Ayah 102 Allah subhanahu wa ta`ala narrates a conversation between Prophet Musa `aalyhi salaam and Fir`awn, “Verily, you know that these signs have clearly been sent down by none but the Lord of the heavens and the earth as eye-opening evidence.”
The Signs of Allah are eye-opening evidence yet people deny them. Upon seeing the punishment in the Hereafter, people will wish for another chance.

We have this one chance and there will never be a second chance. So, time is now that we read the holy scriptures and try to follow the truth contained therein, worship one true God, do not associate anyone with Him and stay clear of the path of the evil forces. Time is now to still make amends, repent our wrongdoings and ask forgiveness of One True God before our worldly clock stops and we are made to stand with our conduct sheets handed over to us. Pray we get our conduct sheets in our right hand, for those holding these in their left hands will be ones mentioned in the verse above.
May Allah help us understand Qur'ān and help us to act upon the commandments of Allah contained therein. Aameen.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully.

An effort has been made to gather explanation / exegesis of the surahs of the Qur'ān from authentic sources and then present a least possible condensed explanation of the surah. In that:
  • The plain translation has been taken from the Qur'ān officially published by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. [1]
  • The exegesis of the chapters of the Quran is mainly based on the "Tafhim al-Qur'an - The Meaning of the Qur'an" by one of the most enlightened scholars of the Muslim World Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi. [2]
In order to augment and add more explanation as already provided by [2], additional input has been interjected from following sources:

Man's Regrets: Would that I had not associated anyone with my Lord in His Divinity

In the series of posts on Man's Regret on the Day of Judgment, we share the 42nd verse from Surah Kahf (The Cave) which is part of parable of two men mentioned in verses 32-45.

When man has nothing, he always invokes Allah's many blessings so that he has more and can enjoy the fruits of Allah's blessings. But it is generally seen that when one is gifted many bounties from Allah, he starts to boast him and vert proudly and arrogantly attribute his wealth due to his very own efforts and even forget about his Creator Who helped him attain a status and raised him above many wen he was in rag tags. While intoxicated in the joys of his status and wealth, he completely forgets that the One Who blessed him many bounties, can also take these away if one is ungrateful. And when He does, one is left with nothing but remorse and regrets:

وَاُحِيۡطَ بِثَمَرِهٖ فَاَصۡبَحَ يُقَلِّبُ كَفَّيۡهِ عَلَىٰ مَاۤ اَنۡفَقَ فِيۡهَا وَهِىَ خَاوِيَةٌ عَلٰى عُرُوۡشِهَا وَيَقُوۡلُ يٰلَيۡتَنِىۡ لَمۡ اُشۡرِكۡ بِرَبِّىۡۤ اَحَدًا‏
(18:42) Eventually all his produce was destroyed and he began to wring his hands in sorrow at the loss of what he had spent on it, and on seeing it fallen down upon its trellises, saying: "Would I had not associated anyone with my Lord in His Divinity."

Verses 32-45 of Surah Al Kahf (The Cave) explains the parable of two men both with beautiful gardens and land for cultivation.  Both gardens produced abundantly and there was a river between the two properties.  One man told the other that he was wealthier and had more followers then the other, and he walked into his garden saying that this will never end and the Last Hour will never come and even if it did God would reward him with something even better.  The other man asked, do you disbelieve in the One who created you, for I do not, and you should have said that all is as God willed and no one has power except Him.   Although I have less, God might give me something better and destroy what you have.  And so it was that the first man’s fertile property was destroyed and he wished he had not attributed his prosperity to himself rather than God.  Then he realized that the only real protection comes from God.

This in the above said verse, يَا لَيْتَنِي لَمْ أُشْرِكْ بِرَبِّي أَحَدًا- expresses extreme regret, The ungrateful man wished he was grateful. The word layta cannot be translated in English because there is no equivalent word. Eminent Muslim scholar and teacher Nouman from Bayyinah states that this word would amount to a deep sigh of regret in English. Layta, in easy terms, is to cry over spilled milk.

This parable has many lessons for those who ponder over the verses of Qur'an and learn the appropriate lessons. We must understand that all that we have has nothing to do with our hard work alone. Unless Allah's help and blessings is available, even our hard work will be fruitless. So while one does put his hard work, he must always be looking towards the Divine Help for without the Divine Help, we are as worthless as the man mentioned in above stated parable ended up with.

This parable also tells us that none other than One True God can help us. Those who associate others in His Unchallenged Lordship are utterly mislead and wronged. Those who turn to worldly deities are also doer of a great sin of Shirk - the sin of associating anyone at par with Allah or being sharer of Allah's position. Unfortunately such people are not few but many, even between the believers, beside many non believers. We must be crystal clear about Who is the True Ruler and Giver. Those who do not associate anyone in the Divinity of Allah are the true successful and blessed ones.
May Allah help us understand Qur'ān and help us to act upon the commandments of Allah contained therein. Aameen.

Man's Regrets: Would that we had obeyed Allah and obeyed the Messenger

The worldly life is all about just a few days (compared to the life of the Hereafter) which is given as a test to the man by Allah. Now it is up to the man either to live it off merrily in leisure (the easier way) or try to please His Creator by living the hard way for life of truth is not an easy one.

At many a places in the Qur'an, Allah has warned man about death: (67:2) Who created death and life that He might try you as to which of you is better in deed. He is the Most Mighty, the Most Forgiving;" So man has to choose which path he adopts so that he passes the test he is put through. And the Day of Resurrection would be a day of sorrow for those who did not listen to the message of Allah brought to them by Allah's messengers and prophets, leaving them in utter dismay, repenting for not having obeyed Allah and His Messenger (s):

يَوۡمَ تُقَلَّبُ وُجُوۡهُهُمۡ فِى النَّارِ يَقُوۡلُوۡنَ يٰلَيۡتَـنَاۤ اَطَعۡنَا اللّٰهَ وَاَطَعۡنَا الرَّسُوۡلَا‏
(33:66) On that Day when their faces shall be turned around in the Fire, they will say: “Would that we had obeyed Allah and obeyed the Messenger.”
That day it would be too late to regret as it would be a useless wish that in no wy would be accepted for enough time had been given to the man in his worldly life to men their ways and follow the path that would save them from humiliation on the Day of Resurrection. When they would be given their conduct sheet in their left hand, they would know that now they could only express regret and feel remorse, for hell fire has been made ready for them.

Tafsir Ibn Kathir:
That is they will be dragged into the Fire on their faces and their faces will be contorted in Hell, and in that state they will wish that they had been among those who had obeyed Allah and His Messenger in this world.

Allah describes how they will be in the Hereafter: (And the Day when the wrongdoer will bite at his hands, he will say: "Oh! Would that I had taken a path with the Messenger. Ah! Woe to me! Would that I had never taken so-and-so as an intimate friend! He indeed led me astray from the Reminder after it had come to me. And Shaytan is to man ever a deserter in the hour of need.'') (25:27-29)

(How much would those who disbelieved wish that they had been Muslims.) (15:2) And here too, Allah tells us that when they are in this state, they will wish that they had obeyed Allah and His Messenger in this world:

Muhammad Asad Explanation:
As in several other instances in the Qur'an, the "face", being the noblest and most expressive part of a human person, represents here man's "personality" in its entirety; and its being "tossed about in the fire" is symbolic of the annihilation of the sinner's will and his reduction to utter passivity.

Yusuf Ali Explanation:
The face is the expression of their Personality, their Self; and turning upside down is a sign of degradation and ignominy. When the Retribution comes, the evil ones will be humiliated, and they will wish that they had followed right guidance when they had the chance. They will then fall to accusing their leaders who misled them. But they forget their own personal responsibility.

Now you may listen to eminent Muslim scholar and teacher Nouman Ali Khan explaining the above said verse:
May Allah help us understand Qur'ān and help us to act upon the commandments of Allah contained therein. Aameen.

Man's Regrets: Would that I had stood by the Messenger!

Continuing with our series of selected verses on Man's Regrets on the Day of Resurrection, we share today a very important post in which those who had been denying the message that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) brought to them as the last of the messengers and prophets of Allah will bite their hands and regret for not having listened to the Divine Commandments, the negation of which have brought him to this regretful day.

The purpose of this series of posts is to forewarn those who do not believe in the last messenger and Prophet of Allah and The Qur'an which is the last revealed scripture of Allah till the Day of Resurrection, to still find the ultimate truth before it is too late, for regretting on the Day of Resurrection will bear no escape from the wrath that awaits them for denying Allah's commandments.

This verse is equally applicable to those who though love the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) but do not act upon his Sunnah or the Hadith and finding other wordily deities to follow and revere them more than Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

The following verse is the 27th verse of Surah 25. Al Furqan:

(25:27) a Day when the wrong-doer will bite his hands, saying: "Would that I had stood by the Messenger!

Tafsir Ibn Kathir: Here Allah tells us of the regret felt by the wrongdoer who rejected the path of the Messenger and what he brought from Allah of clear truth concerning which there is no doubt, and followed another path. When the Day of Resurrection comes, he will feel regret but his regret will avail him of nothing, and he will bite on his hands in sorrow and grief.

Whether this Ayah was revealed concerning `Uqbah bin Abi Mu`it or someone else among the doomed, it applies to every wrongdoer, as Allah says: (On the Day when their faces will be turned over in the Fire) as mentioned in those two Ayat [33:66] Every wrongdoer will feel the ultimate regret on the Day of Resurrection, and will bite at his hands, saying: (O! Would that I had taken a path with the Messenger. Ah! Woe to me! Would that I had never taken so-and-so as an intimate friend!) meaning, the one among the propagators of misguidance who diverted him from true guidance and led him to follow the path of misguidance, whether this refers to Umayyah bin Khalaf or his brother Ubayy bin Khalaf, or to someone else.

Muhammad Asad Explanation: Lit., "taken a path with the apostle". The terms "the apostle" and "the evildoer" are here obviously used in their generic sense, applying to all of God's apostles and all who consciously reject their guidance. Similarly, the expression "so-and-so" (fulan) occurring in the next verse circumscribes any person or personified influence responsible for leading a human being astray.

Yusuf Ali Explanation: The words are general, and for us the interest is in a general sense. A man who actually receives the Truth and is on the right path is all the more culpable if he is diverted from that path by the machinations of a worldly friend. The particular person whom some Commentators mention in this connection was one 'Uqba who received the light of Islam, but was misled afterwards by a worldly friend into apostasy and blasphemy. He came to an evil end afterwards.

You may listen to the explanation of the verse 27 (and the following three verse) from eminent Muslim scholar, exegete, teacher and linguist Nouman Ali Khan:

Man's Regrets: Would that I had never been given my Record

Our first post on the series of selected verses wherein man is shown expressing his regret of the Day of Resurrection was “Would that I had sent ahead what would be of avail for this life of mine!” Now comes the time when the distribution of personal records takes place, when all humans born since Prophet Adam (peace be upon him) and Eve will be paraded all together and their records of good conduct or misconduct will be presented.

Those with the good conduct sheet with take sigh of relief and will be eager to enter Jannah or Paradise. But those with misconduct sheet will have their eyes drawn down with shame and would lament:

وَاَمَّا مَنۡ اُوۡتِىَ كِتٰبَهٗ بِشِمَالِهٖ  ۙ فَيَقُوۡلُ يٰلَيۡتَنِىۡ لَمۡ اُوۡتَ كِتٰبِيَهۡۚ‏
As for him whose Record will be given to him in his left hand, he will exclaim: “Would that I had never been given my Record." (Surah 69. Al-Haqqa:25)

In Surah Al-Inshiqaq it has been said: And the one whose record is given to him behind his back. Probably it will be like this: As the culprit would already be knowing that he was a culprit, and would be aware of what his record contained, he would dejectedly extend his left hand forward to receive it, and then would immediately hide it behind his back so that no one else saw what he had received.

That is, I should not have been given this record in the Plain of Assembly and thus publicly disgraced before all mankind, but should have been awarded secretly whatever punishment I deserved.

Yusuf Ali Explanation
This is in contrast to the righteous ones who will receive their record in their right hand. Cf. lxix. 19. The righteous are glad when they remember their past: their memory is itself a precious possession. The unjust are in agony when they remember their past. Their memory is itself a grievous punishment.

Muhammad Asad Explanation:
Thus, signifying that he had been unrighteous in his earthly life, in contrast with those "whose record will be placed in their right hand"
May Allah help us understand Qur'ān and help us to act upon the commandments of Allah contained therein. Aameen.

  • Towards Understanding the Quran
  • Tafsir Ibn Khatir
  • Muhammad Asad Translation
  • Al-Quran, Yusuf Ali Translation
  • Javed Ahmad Ghamidi / Al Mawrid

Man's Regrets: He will say: Would that I had sent ahead what would be of avail for this life of mine!

We have been sharing selected verses from the Quran for the information of our readers. While we continue to doing so, from today onwards we are commencing a sub-series of some of the Man's Regrets as mentioned by Allah in the Qur'an, which specially relate to the Day of Resurrection. This will be the day when those men who have been denying the life of the hereafter and mocking Allah's messengers and prophets of its ever-taking place. It would be the day of regrets for they spent a life in the earthly world worth complete disregard to numerous warnings conveyed to them to by the messengers and prophets of Allah to save something for the life of the hereafter.

While those few who followed the path of truth as shown in the Divine Scriptures and by the prophets, a majority which followed the Satan and evil ways will taste the torture for denying Allah's commandments. On that day they would regret and say Would that I had sent ahead what would be of avail for this life of mine and many such regrets like this one. But then it would be too late for life is a gift of Allah which is granted only one and the losers on that day will be losers forever.

May Allah save us from the torment of that day and days thereafter and help us follow a life that leases Him. Amen.

For the first post in this sub series of verses from the Qur'an on man's regret, we have chosen the 24th verse from Surah 89 Al Fajr:

يَقُوۡلُ يٰلَيۡتَنِىۡ قَدَّمۡتُ لِحَـيَاتِىۚ‏
(89:24) He will say: “Would that I had sent ahead what would be of avail for this life of mine!”

That is when this person remembers all he did he will say over and over (as indicated by yaqool " يَقُوۡلُ ") ‘Oh what destruction has fallen on upon me!’ or ‘What have I done to myself!’. He will then wish that he had invested in his future life by sending forward some good. When this person was sinning, it was for their life in the dunya but they will at that point realize that it was not real life. These are the people who in the dunya, when they see you investing in your akhira, tell you to concentrate on investing in your future, i.e. in your dunya, studies, home, work etc. However, their perspective soon changes when they get to their real future and life but at that point it will be too late. [1]

Ibn Kathir explains this verse as under:
If he was a disobedient person, he would be sorry for the acts of disobedience he committed. If he was an obedient person, he would wish that he performed more acts of obedience. This is similar to what Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal recorded from Muhammad bin Abi `Amirah, who was one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah. He said, "If a servant fell down on his face (in prostration) from the day that he was born until the day he died as an old man, in obedience to Allah, he would scorn this act on the Day of Judgement. He would wish to be returned to this life so that he could earn more reward and compensation.'

Nouman Ali Khan explains this verse in his words: If only I had spent my wealth in obedience to Allah - an investment for the real life of Jannah/Paradise. But instead, he wasn't encouraging to feed the needy, using his wealth to oppress others, while eating up more wealth of the orphan / weak, and still being greedy for more in this life. Wasn't he doing all this for his life? But on this Day, he will know that real life is the one which is everlasting in Paradise. But he cannot mend his ways - it's too late to return. [3]

May Allah help us understand Qur'ān and help us to act upon the commandments of Allah contained therein. Aameen.
