Who / what is Taghut in Islam (Terminologies in Qur'an)

Islam is all about faith and trust in one true God, called Allah in Islam. Anything other than Allah, the One and the Only Being to be worshiped and prayed to is transgressing the limits set by Allah. Thus, in Islam, "Taghut" (Arabic: طاغوت) refers to anything or anyone that is worshipped, followed, or obeyed in place of Allah, representing falsehood, misguidance, and rebellion against the truth, encompassing false idols, misguided beliefs, and corrupt leaders.

In Qur'an, the terminology Taghut is used in several verses of the Qur'an to describe false deities, oppressive rulers, or systems that lead people away from the monotheistic worship of Allah. The terminology Taghut (Arabic: طاغوت, ṭāġūt) comes from the Arabic root word "t-gh-w", which means anything or anyone that exceeds the bounds of proper obedience to Allah.

For example, if one gives away an Attribute of Allah to something or someone, he sees that as a god or partner next to Allah. And that is what Islam strongly prohibits, for that is the major form of Shirk. And verily, We have sent to every nation a Messenger (proclaiming): “Worship Allah and reject the Taghut (idol).

Meaning and mention of the terminology Taghut in the Qur'an
Here are some key references:
  • Surah Al-Baqarah (2:256):
    • "There is no compulsion in religion. Verily, the right path has become distinct from the wrong path. So whoever renounces Taghut and believes in Allah has certainly grasped the most trustworthy, unfailing hand-hold. And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing."
    • This verse highlights that renouncing Taghut is a fundamental aspect of true faith. The person who turns away from Taghut and embraces belief in Allah is said to hold onto the "most trustworthy, unfailing hand-hold," referring to the unwavering faith in Allah.
  • Surah An-Nisa (4:60):
    • "Have you not seen those who claim to have believed in what was revealed to you, O Muhammad, and what was revealed before you? They wish to refer to Taghut for judgment, while they were commanded to reject it; and Satan wishes to lead them far astray."
    • Here, Taghut is associated with any authority or power that leads people to act in opposition to the commands of Allah. The verse emphasizes that those who turn to such authorities for judgment, instead of relying on Allah's commands, are considered misguided.
  • Surah Al-A'raf (7:55):
    • "Call upon your Lord in humility and privately; indeed, He does not like transgressors."
    • In the context of these verses, Taghut can also be seen as anything that hinders people from calling upon Allah directly and sincerely.
Taghut in Sunnah (Hadith)
In the Sunnah, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also warned against worshipping or submitting to Taghut. He made it clear that true belief in Allah entails rejecting all forms of false deities and systems that lead people away from the worship of Allah.
  • Hadith in Sahih Muslim:
    • The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever says: 'There is no god but Allah' and denies what is worshipped besides Allah, his wealth and his blood are sacred, and his judgment is with Allah." (Sahih Muslim)
    • This hadith emphasizes the importance of denying all forms of false worship, including Taghut, and affirming belief in Allah alone. It is an affirmation of Tawhid (the oneness of Allah) and a rejection of all forms of idolatry and false authorities.
  • Hadith in Sahih Bukhari
    • The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The best of what I have said and the Prophets before me have said is: 'There is no god but Allah, alone without partners, to Him belongs the kingdom and to Him belongs the praise, and He is over all things competent.'" (Sahih Bukhari)
    • This statement of the Prophet (peace be upon him) underscores the centrality of Tawhid and the rejection of everything that is in opposition to it, including Taghoot.
Types of Taghut
Taghut is not limited to physical idols; it encompasses any authority or power that usurps the right of Allah alone to be obeyed. And if we really look around, we would find Taghut in abundance wielding power to subdue the weak. Examples include:
  • False gods – Idols or deities worshipped by people, whether in the form of statues, heavenly bodies, or anything that replaces Allah as the object of worship. These gods and idol worshipping abound around the world specially in many Asian countries. People revere men who claim to be friends of Allah but in fact in their hearts they yearn that people should flock around them instead of asking Allah for help.
  • Oppressive Governments or Leaders – Any ruler who demands obedience that contradicts the commands of Allah or who acts in a way that usurps the rights and authority of Allah. This is mostly the case. Governments and leaders exploit their people in the name of democracy or kingship or even religion.
  • Systems and Ideologies – Any system, be it political, legal, or societal, that contradicts the fundamental principles of Islam and leads people away from the path of righteousness as prescribed by Allah.
Conclusion:
In Islam, Taghut refers to any force, authority, or belief system that challenges or opposes the sovereignty and worship of Allah alone. The Qur'an and Sunnah emphasize that true believers must reject all forms of Taghut in their lives, whether they manifest as idols, oppressive rulers, or false ideologies. Rejecting Taghut and submitting to Allah alone is seen as a key tenet of the Islamic faith.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

Note: When we mention God in our posts, we mean One True God, we call Allah in Islam, with no associates. Allah is the Sole Creator of all things, and that Allah is all-powerful and all-knowing. Allah has no offspring, no race, no gender, no body, and is unaffected by the characteristics of human life.

Islam PROHIBITS looking at `Awrah – the Intimate Body Parts of others

Islam is not only a religion to usher its followers how to worship Allah. It in fact it provides a complete code of life that beside emphasis on worshiping and having faith in Allah, also lays down bounds of inter personal relations, intimacy, justice, legal and social.

Talking of inter personal relations, Islam emphasises on respect and honour of both genders and strictly lays  down guidelines about the intimate relations. Unlike what happens in the West, where man and woman freely mix with each other, establish intimate relations without the bound of marriage, even now establishing relations between same gender look at the and exhibiting feelings about each other in the open, Islam strictly prohibits such intimacy and forbids believers to `Awrah – the Intimate Body Parts of others when in private and orders lowering down their gaze when looking at each other - lest the Evil entices them to go beyond the bounds set forth in Islam.

Before we share a Hadith attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ on this very sensitive subject, let us explain in brief the meaning of Awrah:

'Awrah (Arabic: عورة , ستر, satr)  refers to the intimate parts of the human body, which must, according to Islam, be covered by clothing. Most of modern Islamic scholars agree that the 'awrah of a man is the area between the navel and the knees, and the 'awrah of a woman is the entire body except the face, hand; exposing the 'awrah of the body is against Islamic law. It may be seen that the emphasis of covering the 'Awrah of women is more emphasised as it is the unexposed body of the women that is the basis of all evil that gives misleading signals to men for establishment of illegal intimate relations, which in Islam are only restricted between a Husband and wife, and that too in complete privacy.

This Hadith is quoted in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: Book 3 The Book of Menstruation /   كتاب الحيض/  Chapter 17: The prohibition of looking at `awrah / باب تَحْرِيمِ النَّظَرِ إِلَى الْعَوْرَاتِ / as Hadith number # 338a as under:

'Abd al-Rahman, the son of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, reported from his father:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: A man should not see the private parts of another man, and a woman should not see the private parts of another woman, and a man should not lie with another man under one covering, and a woman should not lie with another woman under one covering.

The hadith you referenced emphasizes the principles of modesty and privacy that are integral to Islamic teachings regarding interpersonal conduct and gender interactions. It aligns with similar guidance in the Quran and other Hadiths that stress the importance of maintaining personal boundaries and safeguarding one’s modesty. Here’s a detailed explanation of this hadith in the light of related Quranic verses and similar Hadiths:

Explanation of the Hadith:
  • Prohibition of Seeing the Private Parts: This part of the hadith stresses that both men and women must maintain their privacy by not exposing their private parts (awrah) to others of the same gender. This reinforces the concept of personal modesty and respect for one's body.
  • Prohibition of Sharing Bed Covers: The instruction against two men or two women lying together under the same cover further emphasizes the importance of boundaries and avoiding situations that could lead to immodesty or inappropriate behavior. It serves as a preventive measure against any actions that could compromise modesty.
It is even mentioned that  when brothers and sisters reach the age of ten, their beds must be separated for the Evil machination may even permeate between brothers and sisters and crossing the bounds of legitimate relations - something called incest in the Western world.

Quranic Commandments on Modesty:
  • For Men: "Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do." Surah An-Nur (24:30-31)
  • For Women: "And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap their headcovers over their chests..."
These verses highlight the general command for both men and women to practice modesty by guarding their private parts and lowering their gaze. The hadith complements these verses by specifically outlining situations that must be avoided to protect personal modesty.

Emphasis on Modesty in Other Hadiths:
  • Hadith on Modesty as Part of Faith: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized that modesty is a core aspect of a Muslim's faith. (Sahih Bukhari). This general principle underlines the importance of avoiding any actions that would compromise modesty, including exposing oneself or being in compromising situations.
  • Hadith on the Awrah (Private Parts): Hadith: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Cover your awrah except from your spouse.” (Sunan Abu Dawood). This hadith underscores that the private parts should remain covered except in the specific context of marriage, reinforcing the same boundaries mentioned in the primary hadith.
Key Themes and Lessons:
  • Maintaining Modesty and Privacy: Islam places a high value on personal modesty, considering it a protective barrier against immoral behavior. The hadith warns against situations that could lead to immodesty or temptation, promoting a culture of respect and personal boundaries.
  • Respecting Boundaries: The hadith serves as a guideline for how Muslims should interact with others of the same gender, ensuring that personal boundaries are respected. By not seeing or exposing the private parts and avoiding close physical situations, Muslims are better able to maintain modesty.
  • Preventing Immorality and Impropriety: The prohibition against sharing a cover with another person of the same gender serves as a preventive measure against potential immorality or inappropriate behavior, promoting a safe and respectful environment.
  • Encouraging Conscious Behavior: This hadith and similar teachings in Islam encourage believers to be conscious of their behavior, surroundings, and interactions, always prioritizing modesty and propriety in their conduct.
This hadith reflects a broader Islamic ethic of modesty, respect for privacy, and safeguarding personal boundaries. It aligns closely with the Quranic injunctions that call for guarding one’s private parts and lowering the gaze, as well as with other prophetic traditions that emphasize modesty as a key component of faith. These teachings collectively aim to foster a community where modesty is protected, inappropriate exposure is avoided, and personal dignity is upheld.
Da'wah - The Invitation to Non-Muslims to Islam

Islam is the final Divine religion which was introduced for the entire mankind through Divine revelation to last of the prophets, Muhammad ﷺ. Since Islam is the final Divine Decree, there will be no more religions or prophets till the "Day of Resurrection" of the dead (Yawm al-Qiyāmah), followed by a "Day of Judgment" (Yawm ad-Din) when all human beings who have ever lived will be held accountable for their deeds by being judged by God.

To fill in the void and to continue to extend the invitation of Islam to the mankind, Da'wah has become the religious obligation for each Muslim to first understand the Islam in depth and then extend the invitation to the non Muslims.

“And who is better in speech than he who [says: ‘My Lord is Allah (believes in His Oneness),’ and then stands firm (acts upon His Order), and] invites (men) to Allah’s (Islamic Monotheism), and does righteous deeds, and says: ‘I am one of the Muslims.’”[Fussilat 41:33]

In one of our earlier posts on Da'wah and calling people to do good and refrain from sins, we had quoted the 104th verse of Surah 3. Al Imran:

“Let there arise out of you a group of people inviting to all that is good (Islam), enjoining Al-Ma‘ruf (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do) and forbidding Al-Munkar (polytheism and disbelief and all that Islam has forbidden). And it is they who are the successful'' [Aal 'Imran 3:104]

This explains why we as Muslims need to invite others to Islam for Islam is the purest and unadulterated religion left out of the previous Divine religions as lot of additions have been made by humans to suit the wishes of the pastors and religious scholars. Therefore we as Muslims must present to the world Islam and wrinkle out many alterations and misconceptions about Islam and also the adulterations that have taken place in other religions.

However it should be borne in mind that discussion on religions is a delicate issue and any lose language may hurt the followers of other faiths and leave a bad impression of Islam. Therefore those engaged in Da'wah must have very good knowledge and understanding of Islam, besides having patience, forbearance, gentleness and kindness.

And it is for this reason that Allah had directed the Prophet of Islam, Mohammad ﷺ to:

“Invite (mankind, O Muhammad) to the way of your Lord (i.e. Islam) with wisdom (i.e. with the Divine Revelation and the Quran) and fair preaching, and argue with them in a way that is better. Truly, your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His path, and He is the Best Aware of those who are guided.” [al-Nahl 16:125]

With this small introduction, let us share a number of posts we have already shared on the dynamics of Da'wah and its modalities:

In time we will add more on modalities and concept of Da'wah in Islam to assist brothers and sisters in Islam engaged in this sacred religious duty.

Da'wah: Calling others to Islam - the sacred duty of every Muslim

Calling to the faith and to the Divine way of life has been entrusted to prophets by Allah since the days of Adam and thereafter till the last Prophet of Allah, Muhammad ﷺ. Initially the call to Allah's Divine religions was done on individual basis as the earlier prophets were sent to a particular area or community.

However, once the message of Allah had been sufficiently spread amount many communities through the Divine Scriptures like the Psalms, Torah and Bible, there was a need to consolidate and reveal one last Divine Scripture for the entire mankind till the Day of Resurrection. This last Divine religion is what we call Islam today. If a systematic and thorough analysis of all earlier religions based on Psalms, Torah and Bible and compare their combined message with the Qur'an, the last revealed Divine Scripture, we find immense similarities since the fountain is the same.

Now that there are to be no more prophets after Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the individual responsibility of spreading Islam has been entrusted to the entire Muslims of the world to not only keep their faith solidified based on Divine Commandments contained in the Qur'an and Sunnah (the teachings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ), but also organize the spread of Islam and calling others to the last and the final religion on behalf of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Da'wah (Arabic: دعوة, "invitation", also spelt daawa, dawah, daawah or dakwah) is the act of inviting or calling people to embrace Islam. The plural is da'wāt (دَعْوات) or da'awāt (دَعَوات).
This calling others to Islam, called Dawah in Arabic has been undertaken by scholars all over the world. But we should not restrict this to scholars alone and in fact every Muslim should brace himself with sufficient knowledge about religion so as to answer quires of non-Muslims when extending invitation to Islam to them. For inadequate knowledge on our part may not leave the kind of impact that touches the heart and souls of the non-Muslims and instill an urge in them to join us as Muslims.

Please watch the video below on the issue by eminent revert Muslim scholar Yusuf Estes, in which emphasizes on an institutionalized approach and a proper Da'wah methodology is required to convey to people that their basic rights of Deen (religion), life, intellect, offspring, and wealth will be protected by the Law of Allah (s.w.t.).:
Yusuf Estes (born: Joseph Estes, 1944), is an American from Texas who reverted from Christianity to Islam in 1991. He has served as a Muslim chaplain for the United States Bureau of Prisons during the 1990s, and has served as a delegate to the United Nations World Peace Conference for Religious Leaders held at the UN in September 2000.
