What is said and believed AND what is said and NOT believed

All Divine religions have the same fountainhead, that is one true God. All along since Adam, through chain of prophets including Noah, Abraham and Moses, the status of one true God remained unchanged. But then with the miraculous birth of prophet Eesa (Jesus) things changed, not by Divine decree but by human interpretations.  Now we have three Gods instead of one. This is despite the fact that what has been said is not believed and what has not been said is believed.

When Islam, the last and final Divine religion came to us, we were categorically asked to believe in one true God, as has been decreed through all previous prophets by God, for the word of one true God never changes and has been accepted by followers of all previous prophets, except followers of Jesus. And instead of following what has been practiced by the previous prophets and the last of the prophets after Jesus, the followers of Jesus today believe in three gods. Some even go a step forward and proclaim Jesus to be the bigger god than the rest two and it is he who will salvage the people on the end day.

The purpose of this post is not to get into any unnecessary debate or argument, but just to share a few references from Bible to show that what is said is not believed and what is not said and yet believed:
  • Hear O  Jews! Our God is One (Mark 12:29), but what is believed is: God is THREE in one
  • No man never heard God voice nor seen His form (John 5:37), but what is believed is Jesus if part of God, thus Jesus is God.
  • My Father and your Father (John 20:17), but what is believed is that Jesus is the only son of God, while others are not.
  • By myself I can do nothing (John 5:30), but the belief says Jesus is the Almighty.
  • Little children are without any sins (Matt 18:3, 19:14), but the belief is all children are born carrying sins of Adam and must be baptized to be washed of the sins they carry.
Now whenever there is a debate between God of Jesus followers and God of Muslims, called Allah, the dispute comes to three gods vs one true God, as the God has been before the birth of Jesus. To the Jesus followers, One God that is Allah of Muslims is not acceptable but they never object to the same one God of Moses, Abraham and Noah. This is despite the fact that Jews out rightly reject Jesus as a prophet

The above few examples show that followers of Jesus believe what is written by men like Paul, John etc about trinity, but at the same time they do not believe that Jesus was a man, a prophet and obeyed One God of Jews. why the dichotomy in belief and faith?

We Muslims believe in the God of Moses and Abraham, the same God that we call Allah.  There is no dichotomy about the status of Allah throughout the Qur'an, which strengthens our faith in Allah, the same God that has since existed and will continue to exist forever. So what is said in Qur'an and earlier scriptures about one true God is BELIEVED and what is said by men is certainly not to be believed.

We will continue to add more to this post so that this simple question is answered for those who have doubts about Allah, the one true God.
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Note: When we mention God in our posts, we mean One True God, we call Allah in Islam, with no associates. Allah is the Sole Creator of all things, and that Allah is all-powerful and all-knowing. Beware of Times when Vile and Base men will control the affairs of the people (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

Although no one other than Allah know what is unseen by men or what is going to happen in the futures, prophets are given a limited insight into the things to happen in future. And the prophets in turn warn the people of the time to be watchful of times when something bad is likely to  happen.

We share such a warning by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and if we look around we would find same thing prevalent in our times of which the revered prophet warned us of.

This warning is mentioned in Sunan Ibn Majah /  Book 36 on Tribulations كتاب الفتن / Chapter # 24 Hard times/ باب شِدَّةِ الزَّمَانِ) as Hadith number # 4036 under:

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
There will come to the people years of treachery, when the liar will be regarded as honest, and the honest man will be regarded as a liar; the traitor will be regarded as faithful, and the faithful man will be regarded as a traitor; and the Ruwaibidah will decide matters.’ It was said: ‘Who are the Ruwaibidah?’ He said: ‘Vile and base men who control the affairs of the people.’”

Although this hadith is graded as Hasan (Darussalam), yet we are sharing it for the its contents perfectly match with the character traits of men of position of our present times. We witness people of treacherous nature in corridors of position and sycophant replacing the faithful who support the vile and base people holding positions of deciding fate of people. We see opportunists making their way sidelining the honest and faithful.

We are unlucky to be seeing the times of which  Prophet Muhammad ﷺ warned us more than fourteen centuries ago. Let us not fall into the trap of these people and keep our faith strong and continue to steer our lives as per dictates of Islam.
Responding to Lies about Islam: The Qur'an was revealed to Muhammad (ﷺ) by the Satan

I started writing my blog in 2018 and since then I have been receiving some absurd and baseless comments on my posts. Mostly, these comments have been repeated from the history of early days of Islam when the pagans of Makkah accused Prophet Muhammad ﷺ of being visited by Satan to reveal Qur'an. And non Muslims of today still quote these lies without reading Qur'an to know what has been the Divine answer to all these concocted lies.

Since more and more non Muslims are accepting the reality and truth that Islam provides and embracing Islam, the priests, monks and pastors are hellbent to make look Qur'an doubtful so as to arrest exodus of non Muslims to Islam. In doing so, they forget that it is only Qur'an which remains unadulterated and changed from the days of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ while there are diffent versions of other Divine scriptures

I will start by one of the most laughable and absurd lies against Islam which is about revelation of Qur'an. Since non Muslims, specially those who are also followers of Divine scriptures, do not want to accept the reality of Islam, they continue to spread the lies and those who read these lies straightaway believe and spit venom against Islam and Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

The lie against Islam selected for my post today is:  The Qur'an was revealed to Muhammad (ﷺ) by the Satan.

The most interesting thing about this lie is that all earlier three scriptures mention throwing out of Satan from the Court of God, the One true God Muslims call Allah, and was sent to earth along with Adam and Eve.  So obviously Satan could not have by any means any access to the Divine Court and be entrusted with the task of conveying the Divine Revelations to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. This fact alone is a strong rebuttal for those who concocted such a  lie.

Now, coming over the earlier days of Islam when the pagans of Makkah also invented such lies which were subjected to a very strong Divine rebuttal, as mentioned in Surah 26. Ash-Shu'araa, verses 210 and 212 reproduced herein under:

وَمَا تَنَزَّلَتۡ بِهِ الشَّيٰطِيۡنُ‏
(26:210) The satans did not bring down this (Clear Book),
After the positive aspect as stated in vv. 192-193, the negative aspect is being stated that the Qur'an has not been brought down by satans as the enemies of the Truth allege.

The verses 192 and 193 are about the truth about revelation of the Qur'an, wherein it is made clear that Qur'an has been sent to By Allah through the revered spirit (Angel Gabriel) to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ:
(26:192) Indeed this is a revelation from the Lord of the Universe;
(26:193) which the truthful spirit has carried down

During the early years of his prophetic mission, some of Muhammad's Meccan opponents tried to explain the rhetorical beauty and persuasiveness of the Qur'an by insinuating that he was a soothsayer (kahin) in communion with all manner of dark forces and evil spirits (shayatin).

The unbelieving Quraish in their campaign to spread lies and slander against the Holy Prophet were facing a real difficulty. They did not know how to account for the wonderful discourses which were being presented before the people in the form of the Qur'an and which were moving their hearts deeply. They could not stop the Qur'an from reaching the people. The only thing they could do to counteract its effect and influence was to create doubts and suspicions about it in their minds and hearts. Therefore, in their desperation they charged that Muhammad (Allah's peace be upon him) was a sorcerer, who was being inspired by the satans, and they considered this charge of theirs to be the most effective because it could neither be easily verified nor refuted.

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir: (The Qur'an was brought down by Jibril, not Shaytan) Allah tells us about His Book, which falsehood cannot approach from before or behind it, sent down by the All-Wise, Worthy of all praise. He states that it has been brought down by the trustworthy Ruh (i.e., Jibril) who is helped by Allah.

(And it is not the Shayatin who have brought it down.) Then He tells us that it could not be the case for three reasons that the Shayatin brought it down. One is that it would not suit them, i.e., they have no desire to do so and they do not want to, because their nature is to corrupt and misguide people, but this contains words enjoining what is right and forbidding what is evil, and light, guidance and mighty proofs.

There is a big difference between this and the Shayatin, Allah says: (Neither would it suit them) (nor are they able.) meaning, even if they wanted to, they could not do it.

Allah says: (Had We sent down this Qur'an on a mountain, you would surely have seen it humbling itself and rent asunder by the fear of Allah) (59:21). Then Allah explains that even if they wanted to and were able to bear it and convey it, they still would not be able to achieve that, because they were prevented from hearing the Qur'an when it was brought down, for the heavens were filled with guardians and shooting stars at the time when the Qur'an was being revealed to the Messenger of Allah , so none of the Shayatin could hear even one letter of it, lest there be any confusion in the matter. This is a part of Allah's mercy towards His servants, protection of His Laws, and support for His Book and His Messenger .

Yusuf Ali Explanation
When anything extraordinary happens, there are always people desirous of putting the worst construction on it, and saying that it is the work of Satans. So when the Qur'an came with its Message in wondrous Arabic, its enemies could only account for its power by attributing it to evil spirits! Such a beneficent message can never suit the purposes of Satans, nor would it be in their power to produce it. In fact Good and Evil are poles asunder, and Evil cannot even hear words of Good, of tender Pity for sinners and Forgiveness for the penitent!

(26:211) nor does it behove them, nor does it lie in their power.
That is, these revelations and themes do not at all suit the satans. Any person who has a little common sense can well understand that the sublime discourses being presented in the Qur'an cannot be inspired by the satans. Never has it happened that the satans might have taught the people through the sorcerers to worship God and fear Him, or forbidden them from shirk and idol-worship, or warned them of the accountability of the Hereafter, or prohibited them from tyranny and sexual and moral evils, and exhorted them instead to act righteously and do good to others. Such works cannot behoove the satans. Their only pastime can be to sow the seeds of discord among the people and to arouse them to mischief and vice. The common observation is that people visit the sorcerers to find out whether they will succeed in their love affairs or not, what move would suit them in gambling, what trick and stratagem would be helpful against the enemy, or who had stolen the camel of so and so. Apart from such affairs and problems, the sorcerers and their patron-saints cannot be expected to worry themselves about matters like reforming the people, teaching them morals and cleansing their lives of vice and evil.

Even if the satans wanted they could not impart Truth and Goodness to the people like a true teacher and reformer as the Qur'an does. Even if to deceive the people, they came out under the guise of a benefactor, their work would not be tree from blemishes, which would betray their ignorance and their hidden satanic nature. Similarly the life and the teachings of a person who poses to be a religious guide, under the influence and inspiration of satans, would inevitably reflect the wickedness of intention and design. Thus the satans can neither inspire others with piety and goodness, nor can those, who have any relation with the satans, become pious and righteous themselves. Then in addition to its high and noble teachings, the Qur'an is a lucid and eloquent Book, which contains the knowledge of Reality. That is why it has over and over again put forward the challenge that human beings and jinns would never be able to produce a book like the Qur'an even if they collaborated with all their energies and capacities. "Declare this: Even if human beings and jinns should cooperate with one another to bring forth a book like the Qur'an, they will never be able to bring anything like it, even though all of them help one another" (Bani Isra'il: 88).

"Tell them: if what you say be true, then produce one Surah like this, and you may call to your assistance anyone you can other than Allah." (Yunus: 38).

(26:212) Indeed they are debarred from even hearing it.
That is, "Not to speak of interfering with the revelation of the Qur'an, the satans are not even given a chance to hear the Qur'an any moment from the time Angel Gabriel receives it from Allah till he reveals it to the heart of the Holy Prophet. They are so kept out of its hearing that they cannot get any hint as to its words and contents so as to tell their friends that the Holy Prophet was going to give such and such a message to his followers, or that his address would contain such and such a thing that day. For further details explanation to verse 12 of Al-Hijr, verse 7 of As -Saffat and verses 8-9, 27 of Surah Jinn.

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir:
Allah says: (Verily, they have been removed far from hearing it.) This is like what Allah tells us about the Jinn: (And we have sought to reach the heaven; but found it filled with stern guards and flaming fires. And verily, we used to sit there in stations, to (steal) a hearing, but any who listens now will find a flaming fire watching him in ambush.) until; (or whether their Lord intends for them a right path) ﴿72:8-10﴾.

Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Explanation:
Ie., such pure words, such noble and exalted teachings and such profound knowledge and that too in a very eloquent and moving style can neither emanate from a devil nor can devils snatch it away from its pure origin and bring it down. This is because all paths which reach to the other side of the world were cordoned off as soon as the revelation of the Qur’ān began. At another instance, the Qur’ān has cited this confession from the tongues of the jinn that earlier they were able to find some stations in the heavens to eavesdrop but now with the revelation of the Qur’ān if anyone of them tries to do so, a shooting star pursues him. In other words, the purport is that the content of the Qur’ān itself is negating this silly allegation and they also are negating it with whose reference this allegation is being made.

This should be enough for those priests and pastors spreading misinformation about Islam to protect their religion which is already finding cracks due to man made insertions and amendments. Let us npt be caught unaware by such misinformation and should be laced with information contained i Qur'an to counter their baseless arguments and lies.
The Command to remember Allah during Spare Time

Today, we share a set of two very meaningful verses taken from Surah 94. Al Sharh, also spelt as Al Inshirah (The Opening Up) which though was a command from Allah to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to remember Allah in his spare time, this is equally applicable to all believers even today.

We can well imagine how much tiring the pre-occupation of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ were every day  to disseminate the Divine Commandments as revealed to him to spread Islam and also attend to delegations visiting him from other places to know about the new found religion. And yet, he was commanded by Allah to remember Him in his spare time. And he did too, for except for a few hours sleep at night, he would get for Tahajjad prayers and spend the later part of the night inn remembrance of Allah till it was time for the pre-dawn prayer, the Fajr.

The purpose of sharing these verses is to impress upon the need to remember Allah when we are free from our daily chores and do not let go Tahajjad prayer at night.

(94: 7-8) So, whenever you are free, strive in devotion,  turn to your Lord with longing
When you are free,” When you are free from other occupations, whether occupations in connection with the preaching of Divine message, or teaching and training of the new converts, or domestic occupations of mundane nature." The commandment means: "When you are no more occupied, you should spend your time in the labor and toil of Allah's worship and turn all your attention exclusively to your Lord."

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir
( So when you have finished, devote yourself to Allah's worship. And to your Lord turn intentions and hopes. )

Meaning, 'when you have completed your worldly affairs and its tasks, and you have broken away from its routine, then get up to perform the worship, and stand for it with zeal, complete devotion and purify your intention and desire for your lord.'

Similar to this is the Prophet's statement in a hadith that is agreed-upon to be authentic, "There is no prayer when the food is served, nor when the two foul things (excrement and urine) are pressing a person."

The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) also said, "When the prayer has started and the dinner has been served, then begin with dinner."

Mujahid said concerning this Ayah, "When you are free from the worldly affairs, and you have stood to pray, then stand up for your Lord."

Yusuf Ali Explanation
(Therefore when thou art free (from thine immediate task) still labor hard) When thou art free: or when thou art relieved. The words understood may be: from thy immediate task, that of preaching to men, denouncing sin, and encouraging righteousness; or, from the difficulties that confronted thee. When that happens, that does not finish the labours of the man of Allah. It is only one step to them. He has constantly and insistently to go on. When there is rest from the task of instructing the world, the contact with the spiritual kingdom continues, and indeed it becomes more intimate and concentrated.

(And to thy Lord turn (all) thy attention) The kingdom of Allah is everything. Other things are incidental, and really do not matter. Worldly greatness or success may be a means to an end, but it may also be a hindrance to true spiritual greatness. Allah is the goal of the righteous man's whole attention and desire.

Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Explanation:
(So, when you are free from this task,  labour hard in worship) Ie., once he is free from the duties of the mission assigned to him. It is evident from other verses of the Qur’ān that this mission was to bring about a worldly reward and retribution in Arabia for its inhabitants and as a result achieve the sovereignty of the truth in this land. Found in the word فَرَغْتَ are the glad tidings that he would be able to successfully complete this mission after surmounting all the impediments that came his way.

(and remain attached to your Lord with all fervour) Ie., when the phase of divine support and victory arrived and he fulfilled his responsibility, he should fully devote himself to worshipping the Almighty because it is only this effort and devotion which would reap rewards for him when he meets his Lord.

Imām Amīn Aḥsan Iṣlāḥī writes: In complying with this final directive, the Prophet (sws) began to spend more and more time in worship. Such was the extent of his involvement that some people even inquired from him the reason for taking so many pains in worship when all his sins had been forgiven. The Prophet (sws) is said to have replied: افلا اكون عبدا شكورا  (Should not I become a grateful servant of my Lord.) (Amīn Aḥsan Iṣlāḥī, Tadabbur-i Qur’ān, vol. 9, 429)

Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:
Seek Him alone and let nothing whatsoever distract you. Do not ever think of the people you call on to believe in Him. A traveller must have his food with him, and this is the real food for your journey. A fighter for a cause needs to have his equipment, and this is the equipment necessary for you. This will provide you with ease in every difficulty you may encounter, and with comfort against every kind of affliction you may suffer.

The surah ends on the same note as the preceding surah, The Morning Hours. It leaves us with two intertwined feelings. The first is a realisation of the great affection shown to the Prophet, which overwhelmed him because it was the love of his Lord, the Compassionate, the Merciful. The other feeling is one of sympathy shown to his noble self. We can almost feel what was going on in his blessed heart at that time which required this reminder of delightful affection. It is this mission of Islam: a grave trust and a burden which weighs him down. It is nevertheless the rising of the divine light, the link between mortality and eternity, existence and non-existence.

An effort has been made to gather explanation / exegesis of the surahs of the Qur'ān from authentic sources and then present a least possible condensed explanation of the surah. In that the exegesis of the chapters of the Quran is mainly based on the "Tafhim al-Qur'an - The Meaning of the Qur'an" by one of the most enlightened scholars of the Muslim World Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi.
In order to augment and add more explanation as already provided, additional input has been interjected from the following sources:
  • Tafsir Ibn Khatir
  • Muhammad Asad Translation
  • Yusuf Ali Translation
  • Translation Javed Ahmad Ghamidi / Al Mawrid
  • Qur'an Wiki
  • Verse by Verse Qur'an Study Circle
  • Towards Understanding the Quran
In addition, references of other sources which have been explored have also been given above. Those desirous of detailed explanations and tafsir (exegesis), may refer to these sites.

Supplication if something overwhelms you (Attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

Life is never too easy for anyone, even the rich besides the poor. The earth suddenly slips from one's feet and many an utterly rich fall to the ground losing everything they had.  These are the trying times of a man and he just doesn't know what to do and whom to turn to.  But blessed are the true believers who when inflicted with any loss that is so overwhelming to bear, they always turn to Allah for help.

We share a supplication attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ which is mentioned in Sunan Ibn Majah /  Book 37 on Zuhd كتاب الزهد / Chapter # 14 Reliance and certain faith / باب التَّوَكُّلِ وَالْيَقِينِ ) as Hadith number # 4168 as under:

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said, attributing it to the Prophet (ﷺ):
“The stronger believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, although both are good. Strive to seek that which will benefit you and do not feel helpless. If something overwhelms you, then say: Qaddarallah, wa ma sha'a fa’al (It is the decree of Allah and what He wills He does). And beware of (saying) ‘If only,’ for ‘If only’ opens the door to Satan.

Grade: Sahih (Darussalam)

Whenever making a supplication, one must never use words that leave any ambiguity when invoking the mercy of Allah. For any hesitation as any "if" opens door to Satan to make one doubtful whether Allah will heed to his request or not. Be firm and outright in invoking Allah's mercy and then leave the outcome to Allah. This is what true faith is.

Beware of Charlatans (Warning by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

Prophets and messengers of Allah were blessed with special insight into some of the happenings that would take place after them and they always warned their people to be beware of times when the lies will be twisted in such words that these will be taken as true. Those will be the times when people will lose sight of the truth and will follow the charlatans who would become their pied pipers, leading them to chaos and leaving them disarray and confused.

A charlatan is one who pretends to possess knowledge he or she lacks. From the 16th century Italian ciarlatano "a quack," the usage of charlatan has not shifted much. Other words for charlatan are impostor, cheat, or pretender. Charlatans often make grandiose claims without evidence, use high-pressure tactics to get people to act quickly, and avoid scrutiny or verification of their claims. They may also lack credentials or qualifications in the areas they claim expertise.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, like all other prophets, warned of presence of charlatan in ranks of believers who would mislead them with their sugar quoted eloquence, though they themselves be devoid of any true knowledge.

This Hadith is quoted in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: Introduction/Chapter(#4) The Weak Narrators, Liars, and Those Whose Hadith are Avoided - باب النَّهْىِ عَنِ الرِّوَايَةِ، عَنِ الضُّعَفَاءِ، وَالاِحْتِيَاطِ، فِي تَحَمُّلِهَا   as Hadith number # 7 quoted herein under:

Harmalah bin Yahyā bin Abd Allah bin Harmalah bin Imrān at-Tujībī narrated to me, he said Ibn Wahb narrated to us, he said Abū Shurayh narrated to me that he heard Sharāhīl bin Yazīd saying ‘Muslim bin Yasār informed me that he heard Abā Hurayrah saying, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah upon him, said:
There will be in the end of time charlatan liars coming to you with narrations that you nor your fathers heard, so beware of them lest they misguide you and cause you tribulations’.’

Today, if we look around their hoard of information is uploaded on social media which in fact is misinformation and disinformation which is utterly false and misleading. Yet the use of social media, the graphics and references to Islamic literature which when tried to be traced out are never found. Or words are twisted to give them entirely new meanings to mislead the believers. Already there are some Muslims who have fallen to the machination of the charlatans and have started to doubt even their own faith.

There are many imams and pseudo scholars, specially in Indian sub continent who are source of spreading false and misleading information about Islam. And instead of teaching them to follow teachings of Qur'an and Sunnah, they have made some long dead scholars and Muslim preachers as their role models and asking their followers to follow their role models rather than Allah and His Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. They have also made many false hadiths to mislead people and make them believe what they want them to.

So, my dear readers, please check and recheck the authenticity of any information related to Islam and hadiths / sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ before accepting these as true. Already a lot of weak / daif hadiths are quoted to mislead others. I come across many such hadiths and unless the authenticity is ensured, I do not post. May Allah help us to judge and differentiate between the truth and the lie. Ameen.
What is Shariah “الشريعة“ ? (Understanding Islam)

The word Shariah (Arabic “الشريعة“, spelt as sharīʿah) is one of the most misinterpreted and misused word by non Muslims around the world. It is usually understood that Shariah is to behead non Muslims and cutting their hands and is this mocked and ridiculed. Such misunderstanding and misinterpretations occur when one has not really tried to know what Shariah means and what are its dynamics. Instead it has just become a jargon to ridicule Muslims and image of Islam.

We at Islam: My Ultimate Decision, would try to define Shariah in very simple terms, since the overall concept requires books to really understand its actual meaning and scope.

There is no denying the fact that no community or comity of people can function smoothly and peacefully without a justice system to enforce laws to be abided by to ensure peaceful coexistence and smooth functioning. Communities, where men take law in their hands and interpret laws according to their own wishes and mindset, chaos is ultimately the end result. Therefore every civilized country has constituted justice system based on set of laws to administer governments and affairs of the people.

Since Islam is not merely a religion, but a complete code of conduct, called Deen, the Qur'an while guiding believers how to live a life as dictated by Allah, it also lays down laws for the smooth conduct of affairs of Muslims. These laws have been further elaborated through Sunnah (practical manifestation of Divine commandments and laws) of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. These laws are plainly called Shariah. Thus the term Shariah refers to the values, code of conduct, and religious commandments or Divine Laws which provide the Muslims with the guidance in every aspect of their lives.  Shariah is often translated as the Islamic Law, but in Arabic and Islamic understanding, Islamic Law is called Fiqh - practical application of sharia in a sense, elaborated over the centuries by legal opinions issued by qualified jurists.

Shariah is not a new concept. Other Divine religions too have sacred laws as well. For examples, Jews have Halakhah, which is similar to Shariah in method and content. Christian Catholics have teaching authority, called Magisterium, which deals with aspects like marriage, social justice or even business ethics.

Shariah represents how practicing Muslims can best lead their daily lives in accordance with God's divine guidance. It may be generally defined as the Islamic law revealed by God to the Prophet Muhammad. That divine law was then interpreted by Muslim scholars over the centuries.

In the Quran the term “Shariah” occurs in Surah al-Jathiah (Quran 45: 18): “And now, We have set you (O Muhammad, and sent you) to help establish a way of religion (complete) constituting rules of religion; so you follow that way and do not yield to the desires of those who are ignorant (of the truth).”

Since the interpretation of Islamic Laws is very complex and intricate, as is any laws the interpretation which is not possible without expert lawyers, Shariah too is not be left to the ordinary imams or prayer leaders and scholars with inadequate religious knowledge for any wrong and inaccurate interpretation may lead to chaos and misunderstandings. Therefore, the interpretation of Sharia remains the domain of well read and qualified scholars who base their interoperation by qiyas (reasoning by analogy) and Ijma (scholarly consensus). More often than not they also base their decisions on precedent.

Shariah is the whole divine law and values as given by Allah i Qur'an. Fiqh is the laws extracted by Muslim jurists from the sources of Islamic law.

The applicability of Islamic laws to various situations and various areas differs to conform to conform to the culture and traditions of a particular people. However, the interpretation of Shariah sometimes differs from scholar to scholar, and to arrive at a consensus, many central bodies function around the world so as not to allow application of laws which are tangent to the spirit of Islam.

Generally, the application of Shariah is divided into two main areas, given herein under:
  • Laws and guidance related to Worship (عبادات Ibadaat), both at personal and collective level.
  • Guidance in worldly matters (معاملات Mu'amalat). This is the main stay of Islamic Shariah and caters for a very large number of areas just like the public laws anywhere in the world. These include matters related to marriages, inheritance, investments, business and justice.
The guiding Shariah rule: Sharia law is a religious law that lays down governing principles for spiritual, mental, and physical behavior that must be followed by Muslims. It categorizes all man's acts into five distinct categories: obligatory, recommended, permitted, discouraged, and forbidden.

Presently, there are two Muslim countries, Iran and Afghanistan, where Shariah is enforced in its true form. In many other Islamic countries, Shariah is implemented mostly in private domain as Islamic laws are generally follow the general laws prevailing in the world.

However, clashes do arise when Muslims living in non Muslim countries observe Shariah directions in their public life. One of the most glaring example is that of wearing Hijab which is mostly banned in some of the non Muslim countries and more often than not untoward incidents are noticed and wearers of Hijab fined for violating local laws. However, despite bans and restrictions, Muslims are pushing their way forward to at least allow them observing Shariah laws that are applicable at personal and individual level.

More will be added to this post.
