Every Muslim should remember this Hadith as it sums up definition and meaning of Islam

It is the psyche of the man to go for summarized solutions and answers as lengthy answers are seldom read in complete. Today we shar e a hadith attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ which sums up the definition of Islam, faith, and an indication to the signs of the end days. I read it (and also watched the video given at the end of the post) and found it extremely informative and am sharing it so that Muslims should read this hadith time and again so that meaning of Islam and faith is crystal clear to them and may come handy when explaining Islam to non Muslims in just few words, words that were carefully chosen by our revered Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

This Hadith is quoted in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: The Book of Faith (#1) / كتاب الإيمان  / Chapter # 1 Explaining Al-Iman (Faith), Al-Islam, and Al-Ihsan, and The Obligations of Al-Iman With Affirmation of The Qadar of Allah, Glorious And Most High is He. And Explaining The Evidence For Declaring One's Innocence Of One Who Does Not Believe In Al-Qadar, And Having A Harsh View Of His Case / باب بيان الإيمان والإسلام والإحسان ووجوب الإيمان بإثبات قدر الله سبحانه وتعالى وبيان الدليل على التبري ممن لا يؤمن بالقدر وإغلاظ القول في حقه‏‏‏) as Hadith number # 8a as under:

It is narrated on the authority of Yahya b. Ya'mur that the first man who discussed qadr (Divine Decree) in Basra was Ma'bad al-Juhani. I along with Humaid b. 'Abdur-Rahman Himyari set out for pilgrimage or for 'Umrah and said:

Should it so happen that we come into contact with one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) we shall ask him about what is talked about taqdir (Divine Decree). Accidentally we came across Abdullah ibn Umar ibn al-Khattab, while he was entering the mosque. My companion and I surrounded him. One of us (stood) on his right and the other stood on his left. I expected that my companion would authorize me to speak. I therefore said: Abu Abdur Rahman! There have appeared some people in our land who recite the Qur'an and pursue knowledge. And then after talking about their affairs, added: They (such people) claim that there is no such thing as Divine Decree and events are not predestined. He (Abdullah ibn Umar) said: When you happen to meet such people tell them that I have nothing to do with them and they have nothing to do with me. And verily they are in no way responsible for my (belief). Abdullah ibn Umar swore by Him (the Lord) (and said): If any one of them (who does not believe in the Divine Decree) had with him gold equal to the bulk of (the mountain) Uhud and spent it (in the way of Allah), Allah would not accept it unless he affirmed his faith in Divine Decree. 

He further said: My father, Umar ibn al-Khattab, told me: One day we were sitting in the company of Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) when there appeared before us a man dressed in pure white clothes, his hair extraordinarily black. There were no signs of travel on him. None amongst us recognized him. At last he sat with the Apostle (peace be upon him) He knelt before him placed his palms on his thighs and said: Muhammad, inform me about al-Islam. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Al-Islam implies that you testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah, and you establish prayer, pay Zakat, observe the fast of Ramadan, and perform pilgrimage to the (House) if you are solvent enough (to bear the expense of) the journey. He (the inquirer) said: You have told the truth. He (Umar ibn al-Khattab) said: It amazed us that he would put the question and then he would himself verify the truth. He (the inquirer) said: Inform me about Iman (faith). He (the Holy Prophet) replied: That you affirm your faith in Allah, in His angels, in His Books, in His Apostles, in the Day of Judgment, and you affirm your faith in the Divine Decree about good and evil. He (the inquirer) said: You have told the truth. He (the inquirer) again said: Inform me about al-Ihsan (performance of good deeds). He (the Holy Prophet) said: That you worship Allah as if you are seeing Him, for though you don't see Him, He, verily, sees you. He (the enquirer) again said: Inform me about the hour (of the Doom). He (the Holy Prophet) remarked: One who is asked knows no more than the one who is inquiring (about it). He (the inquirer) said: Tell me some of its indications. He (the Holy Prophet) said: That the slave-girl will give birth to her mistress and master, that you will find barefooted, destitute goat-herds vying with one another in the construction of magnificent buildings. He (the narrator, Umar ibn al-Khattab) said: Then he (the inquirer) went on his way but I stayed with him (the Holy Prophet) for a long while. He then, said to me: Umar, do you know who this inquirer was? I replied: Allah and His Apostle knows best. He (the Holy Prophet) remarked: He was Gabriel (the angel). He came to you in order to instruct you in matters of religion.

حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ، زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، عَنْ كَهْمَسٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ يَعْمَرَ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ الْعَنْبَرِيُّ، - وَهَذَا حَدِيثُهُ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، حَدَّثَنَا كَهْمَسٌ، عَنِ ابْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ يَعْمَرَ، قَالَ كَانَ أَوَّلَ مَنْ قَالَ فِي الْقَدَرِ بِالْبَصْرَةِ مَعْبَدٌ الْجُهَنِيُّ فَانْطَلَقْتُ أَنَا وَحُمَيْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْحِمْيَرِيُّ حَاجَّيْنِ أَوْ مُعْتَمِرَيْنِ فَقُلْنَا لَوْ لَقِينَا أَحَدًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَسَأَلْنَاهُ عَمَّا يَقُولُ هَؤُلاَءِ فِي الْقَدَرِ فَوُفِّقَ لَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ دَاخِلاً الْمَسْجِدَ فَاكْتَنَفْتُهُ أَنَا وَصَاحِبِي أَحَدُنَا عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَالآخَرُ عَنْ شِمَالِهِ فَظَنَنْتُ أَنَّ صَاحِبِي سَيَكِلُ الْكَلاَمَ إِلَىَّ فَقُلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ إِنَّهُ قَدْ ظَهَرَ قِبَلَنَا نَاسٌ يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ وَيَتَقَفَّرُونَ الْعِلْمَ - وَذَكَرَ مِنْ شَأْنِهِمْ - وَأَنَّهُمْ يَزْعُمُونَ أَنْ لاَ قَدَرَ وَأَنَّ الأَمْرَ أُنُفٌ ‏.‏ قَالَ فَإِذَا لَقِيتَ أُولَئِكَ فَأَخْبِرْهُمْ أَنِّي بَرِيءٌ مِنْهُمْ وَأَنَّهُمْ بُرَآءُ مِنِّي وَالَّذِي يَحْلِفُ بِهِ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ لَوْ أَنَّ لأَحَدِهِمْ مِثْلَ أُحُدٍ ذَهَبًا فَأَنْفَقَهُ مَا قَبِلَ اللَّهُ مِنْهُ حَتَّى يُؤْمِنَ بِالْقَدَرِ ثُمَّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ قَالَ بَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ إِذْ طَلَعَ عَلَيْنَا رَجُلٌ شَدِيدُ بَيَاضِ الثِّيَابِ شَدِيدُ سَوَادِ الشَّعَرِ لاَ يُرَى عَلَيْهِ أَثَرُ السَّفَرِ وَلاَ يَعْرِفُهُ مِنَّا أَحَدٌ حَتَّى جَلَسَ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَأَسْنَدَ رُكْبَتَيْهِ إِلَى رُكْبَتَيْهِ وَوَضَعَ كَفَّيْهِ عَلَى فَخِذَيْهِ وَقَالَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ أَخْبِرْنِي عَنِ الإِسْلاَمِ ‏.‏ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏"‏ الإِسْلاَمُ أَنْ تَشْهَدَ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ وَتُقِيمَ الصَّلاَةَ وَتُؤْتِيَ الزَّكَاةَ وَتَصُومَ رَمَضَانَ وَتَحُجَّ الْبَيْتَ إِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلاً ‏.‏ قَالَ صَدَقْتَ ‏.‏ قَالَ فَعَجِبْنَا لَهُ يَسْأَلُهُ وَيُصَدِّقُهُ ‏.‏ قَالَ فَأَخْبِرْنِي عَنِ الإِيمَانِ ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏"‏ أَنْ تُؤْمِنَ بِاللَّهِ وَمَلاَئِكَتِهِ وَكُتُبِهِ وَرُسُلِهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ وَتُؤْمِنَ بِالْقَدَرِ خَيْرِهِ وَشَرِّهِ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ صَدَقْتَ ‏.‏ قَالَ فَأَخْبِرْنِي عَنِ الإِحْسَانِ ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏"‏ أَنْ تَعْبُدَ اللَّهَ كَأَنَّكَ تَرَاهُ فَإِنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ تَرَاهُ فَإِنَّهُ يَرَاكَ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ فَأَخْبِرْنِي عَنِ السَّاعَةِ ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏"‏ مَا الْمَسْئُولُ عَنْهَا بِأَعْلَمَ مِنَ السَّائِلِ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ فَأَخْبِرْنِي عَنْ أَمَارَتِهَا ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏"‏ أَنْ تَلِدَ الأَمَةُ رَبَّتَهَا وَأَنْ تَرَى الْحُفَاةَ الْعُرَاةَ الْعَالَةَ رِعَاءَ الشَّاءِ يَتَطَاوَلُونَ فِي الْبُنْيَانِ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ ثُمَّ انْطَلَقَ فَلَبِثْتُ مَلِيًّا ثُمَّ قَالَ لِي ‏"‏ يَا عُمَرُ أَتَدْرِي مَنِ 
السَّائِلُ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قُلْتُ اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏"‏ فَإِنَّهُ جِبْرِيلُ أَتَاكُمْ يُعَلِّمُكُمْ دِينَكُمْ ‏"‏ ‏.‏

Dear brothers and sisters in Islam, read this (or listen to the video) time and again and let our children also read it time and again until the meaning of Islam and faith becomes crystal clear to us, In sha Allah.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 
وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

How the world view Islam as the fastest growing religion

I started writing my blog back in 2018 to know why non Muslims embrace Islam and since my first post, everyday is a new day for me to get an answer to my question. Every single revert experience is so absorbing and meaningful that solidifies my faith in Islam more than yesterday. 

There have been many surveys that have been carried out in the past and are still being carried out to find why Islam is getting a firm foothold in every non Muslim country around the world and why the Muslim population is on the increase in the recent years. Muslims were a billion plus some twenty years ago, but the rapid reversion of non Muslims of every faith has made the Muslim population swell to more than 2.5 billion. Every year, more than 400o-5000 Americans revert to Islam, and the ratio is no less in other non Muslim countries. In Russia alone the Muslim population is around 23 million, despite the ruthless clamping of the Muslims in the communist era. Mind you the growth of Islam is undeterred by the general conception of Islamophobia and considering Muslims as terrorists and illiterate vagabonds. Many around the world believe that by the present growth size of Muslims, Islam will become the dominating religion in the world by year 2050, surpassing Christianity.

One of the amazing find of the surveys is that despite a general hatred for Hijab, the ratio of women embracing Islam is more than the men.  Many interview reveal that women wearing Hijab feel more confident of themselves, more precious that before when they wore revealing clothes and men stared on the bodies rather than finding more about character. The separate identity that Hijab gives to Muslim women is much more valuable to them rather than when they were out there in open, playing in the hands of lust of the men.

Today, I share an exhaustive video on what drives people to embrace Islam - a video that is a must watch for all Muslims and non Muslims, mulling to enter the fold of Islam.  In this video, despite the general prejudice about Islam, non Muslims are forced to confess Islam as the most peaceful religion that answers many a unanswered queries of the non Muslims about all prophets that have lived before the  last of the prophets, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, difference between God and Allah, and the concept of Trinity. In fact Qur'an, the last of the Divine Scripturas after Psalms, Torah and the Bible, talks more about Prophet Eesa (Jesus, peace be upon him) than Bible as some Christians think.

Please take out time and watch the video. If you are running short of time, then don't fast forward it, rather read in short lengths to understand the true growth of Islam around the world.  I for myself feel proud of living in a time when more and more access is available to Islam and people are willingly reading Qur'an, and Hadith / Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and taking Shahadah. Even priests, monks and bishops too are among those who are reverting to Islam, for they know where the truth lies.

I feel happy for being a part of the Da'wah (invitation to Islam) drive by writing about Islam and sharing information, like the one in the above shared video, with firm belief that these efforts will not go waste. And all my posts in my blog will be read over from every corner of the world, and if even one non Muslim takes Shahadah after reading my post, I will say I have achieved my mission to introduce Islam to the world, though my effort is like a drop of water dropped into the ocean of knowledge being shared around the world by scholars, imams and preachers.
May Allah (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us have unflinching faith and trust in Divine Wisdom and decisions and should never lament for we do not know that something better has been planned for us by our most caring Lord. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 
وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏

Noble status that Islam grants to women leads a Sikh to Islam (Revert Experiences)

Reading and listening to revert experiences is really soul searching, specially for the born Muslims. These experiences are so unique that one can go on and on listening to the revert experiences of once non Muslims. In fact, to my reckoning, these are far better than reading a book of fiction or any other books for merely passing time.

I have shared a number of revert experiences in my previous posts, yet my quest to know more about reverted Muslims and know why they did take the ultimate decision of their lives to leave behind their previous faith they have been practicing since their childhood and  to accepting Islam. The decision is certainly not easy for the immediate reaction is the detachment of friends and family and almost struggling and braving the world, defending their decision. And when it comes to women, the change over is much harder than men for they enter into a new form of attire which generally raises eye brows of many when out of one's house.

Today we share a revert experience of brave young Sikh woman who inspired by the noble status Islam grants to women in Islam.

Interconnection between Qur'an and Bible leads a Bishop to Islam

Truth has always been so powerful that no matter how much effort is applied to suppress it, it remain the truth and one day despite all odds and resistance it comes to forth. The absolute truth is that there is no god(s) but One True God - a truth that all prophets preached since Adam to last of the prophets Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Qur'an, the Divinely revealed book of Islam is the truest Divine Book that pronounces the Oneness of God without any associates and assistants. This testimony alone is sufficient for many to find the truth and embrace Islam.

And this testimony does not only move the hearts of the common non Muslims, but also forces the priests, bishops, monks and all holy men of their own faith to ponder of the truth that Qur'an contains about Oneness of God and enter the fold of Islam.

Today, in our series of posts on Revert Experiences, share the revert experience of a Bishop from Philippines, who found a connection between the two verses of Qur'an and that of John 17:3 and found the reconnection an eye opener to shun the concept of Trinity and embrace Islam. 

Bishop Kleopas Daclan has been one of the most important bishops in the Philippine Orthodox Church. He had served in this Church for over 21 years. He is a scholar who has studied the Bible extensively in three different languages; Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic which is the original language of the Bible. He was considered a Bible expert.

The verses from Qur'an are the 116th and 117th verses form Surah 5. Al Maidah (The Table Spread) as mentioned below. In fact the verses 116-120 are about the Testimony of Jesus on the Day of Judgement about the Christians:

(5:116) And imagine when thereafter Allah will say: 'Jesus, son of Mary, did you say to people: "Take me and my mother for gods beside Allah?"130 and he will answer: "Glory to You! It was not for me to say what I had no right to. Had I said so, You would surely have known it. You know all what is within my mind whereas I do not know what is within Yours. You, indeed You, know fully all that is beyond the reach of human perception.

(5:117) I said to them nothing except what You commanded me, that is: 'Serve Allah, my Lord and your Lord.' I watched over them as long as I remained among them; and when You did recall me, then You Yourself became the Watcher over them. Indeed, You are Witness over everything.

When the Bishop read these two verses, he was suddenly reminded of John 17:3 which said:  Jesus defined eternal life saying, “This is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.”

He then read Qur'an extensively to find the truth, until he reached the 112th Surah / Chapter  of Qur'an which very clearly and explicitly define Oneness of God in very simplified manner:

1. Say (O' Muhammad), “He is Allah, (the) One (Ahad - In Arabic Ahad means One).   
2. Allah, the Absolute. 
3. He begets not, nor was He begotten;
4. And there is none co-equal or comparable unto Him.”

This clarified Bishop's misconception about Trinity that he has been struggling all along to find an answer for the concept really did not fit the definition of God. Now watch the video below and see how Bishop Kleopas Daclan finally found the truth and reverted to Islam:

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

Painful punishment for those who tyrannize upon the earth

The world was created for a harmonious living for everyone. Yet we see some of us flexing their muscle, due to their position of authority, wealth and mere physical strength to subdue the others. Such behavior starts from a tyrant parent at home to communities and nations. If we look around we see powerful countries waging or assisting in waging wars for their own interests and destroying the world peace. 

How ironic, that wars and tyranny is spread in the name of peace, while millions perish in the process, and still no peace could be established. The plight of Palestinians and Kashmiris is a point in case. Major powers play a big role in not resolving the disputes, rather they fuel the issues and keep these remain unsolved in the name of their interests.

However, history is replete with tales of the once powerful empires which vanished due to Divine wrath when they tyrannized others to achieve more power and dominance. Such are the people who not only see their utter fate in this world, but will also be subjected to painful punishment when the Divine court will be established on the Judgment Day. Such people have been forewarned of the Divine chastisement in the 42nd verse of Surah 42. Ash- Ash-Shura as appended below, in the backdrop of the 41st verse which reassures men who who avenges himself after he has been wronged.

اِنَّمَا السَّبِيۡلُ عَلَى الَّذِيۡنَ يَظۡلِمُوۡنَ النَّاسَ وَ يَبۡغُوۡنَ فِى الۡاَرۡضِ بِغَيۡرِ الۡحَقِّ​ؕ اُولٰٓـئِكَ لَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ اَلِيۡمٌ‏ 
The way [of blame] is only against the ones who wrong the people and tyrannize upon the earth without right. Those will have a painful punishment.

Tafsir Wiki Qur'an:
No blame attaches to those who defend themselves after having been wronged. Blame attaches only to those who oppress other people and transgress in the land against all right. For such, there is painful suffering in store." (Verses 41-42) A wronged person who retaliates against injustice, repays an evil act with its like, and who makes sure not to transgress his limits, is simply exercising his legitimate right. Hence, no blame attaches to him. No one should prevent him from exacting justice. The ones to be stopped are those who oppress and encroach on others. Human life cannot be set on a right basis while injustice continues unchecked and its perpetrators go about freely, fearing no consequence. God warns all perpetrators of injustice that they will be severely punished, but people must also rise against those responsible and prevent them from committing further injustice.

Tafsir Ibn e Kathir:
(Blame is only against those who oppress men and rebel in the earth without justification;) means, those who initiate wrongful actions against others, as it says in the Sahih Hadith:

(When two persons indulge in abusing each other, the one who initiated the wrongful action is to blame, unless the one who was wronged oversteps the mark in retaliation.)

(for such there will be a painful torment.) means, intense and agonizing. It was reported that Muhammad bin Wasi' said, "I came to Makkah and there was a security out post over the trench whose guards took me to Marwan bin Al-Muhallab, who was the governor of Basrah. He said, 'What do you need, O Abu 'Abdullah' I said, 'If you can do it, I need you to be like the brother of Banu 'Adiy.' He said, 'Who is the brother of Banu 'Adiy' He said, 'Al-'Ala' bin Ziyad; he once appointed a friend of his to a position of authority, and he wrote to him: If you can, only go to sleep after you make sure that there is nothing on your back [i.e., you do not owe anything to anyone], your stomach is empty and your hands are untainted by the blood or wealth of the Muslims. If you do that, then there will be no way (of blame) against you

إِنَّمَا السَّبِيلُ عَلَى الَّذِينَ يَظْلِمُونَ النَّاسَ وَيَبْغُونَ فِي الْأَرْضِ بِغَيْرِ الْحَقِّ ۚ أُولَٰئِكَ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ
(The way is only against those who oppress men and rebel in the earth without justification; for such there will be a painful torment.)' Marwan said, 'He spoke the truth, by Allah, and gave sincere advice. ' Then he said, 'What do you need, O Abu 'Abdullah' I said, 'I need you to let me join my family.' He said, 'Yes [I will do that].'" This was recorded by Ibn Abi Hatim. When Allah condemned wrongdoing and the people who do it, and prescribed Al-Qisas, He encouraged forgiveness.

May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. How to talk to Allah

Today we touch upon an aspect which is generally set aside and more often than not when someone is in distress, he starts to find some holy man to forward his request to Allah, for he thinks it is too holy or forbidden to approach directly to Allah. This happens when our scholars, mentors and imams who discourage someone talking directly to Allah and ask them to find some Wali who could forward their request to Allah, for they are thought to be pure and 'more closer to Allah.'

Well to my reckoning, this mindset is totally misleading. Allah is always close to His servants and is on the lookout for someone turning to him and make a request. In fact we have been told to memorize a few supplications and repeating these time and again to forward our case to Allah. Whereas, Allah wants us to talk to Him, in any words, any language or even in any state or place. He wants us to really talk to  Him as a child makes a request to his mother again and again till his mother gives in.

In this backdrop, we share a very enlightening lecture which is based on the following verse from Qur'an:

وَاِذَا سَاَلَـكَ عِبَادِىۡ عَنِّىۡ فَاِنِّىۡ قَرِيۡبٌؕ اُجِيۡبُ دَعۡوَةَ الدَّاعِ اِذَا دَعَانِ فَلۡيَسۡتَجِيۡبُوۡا لِىۡ وَلۡيُؤۡمِنُوۡا بِىۡ لَعَلَّهُمۡ يَرۡشُدُوۡنَ
“And when My servants ask you (O Muhammad concerning Me, then answer them), I am indeed near (to them by My knowledge). I respond to the invocations of the supplicant when he calls on Me (without any mediator or intercessor). So let them obey Me and believe in Me, so that they may be led aright.“ Surah Al-Baqarah (2:186)

Even though people can neither see God nor subject Him to any other form of sense perception this should not make them feel that God is remote from them. On the contrary, He is so close to each and every person that whenever any person so wishes he can communicate with his Lord. So much so that God hears and responds even to the prayers which remain within the innermost recesses of the heart.

People exhaust themselves by approaching false and powerless beings whom they foolishly fancy to be their deities but who have neither the power to hear nor to grant their prayers. But God, the omnipotent Lord and the absolute Master of this vast universe, Who wields all power and authority, is so close to human beings that they can always approach Him without the intercession of any intermediaries, and can put to Him their prayers and requests.

This announcement of God's closeness to man may open his eyes to the Truth, may turn him to the right way wherein lies his success and well-being.

You may now listen to one of the most eminent scholars of present times, Nouman Ali Khan, explaining how to connect to Allah by really talking to Him:
Nouman Ali Khan, born to a Pakistani family, is an American Muslim speaker and Arabic instructor who founded the Bayyinah Institute for Arabic and Qur’anic Studies, after serving as an instructor of Arabic at Nassau Community College. He has been named one of the 500 most influential Muslims in the world by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre of Jordan.

Imam Ahmad reported that Abu Musa Al-Ash`ari said, “We were in the company of Allah’s Messenger during a battle. Whenever we climbed a high place, went up a hill or went down a valley, we used to say, `Allah is the Most Great,’ raising our voices. The Prophet came by us and said: “O people! Be merciful to yourselves (i.e., don’t raise your voices), for you are not calling a deaf or an absent one, but One Who is All-Hearer, All-Seer. The One Whom you call is closer to one of you than the neck of his animal. O `Abdullah bin Qais (Abu Musa’s name) should I teach you a statement that is a treasure of Paradise: `La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah (there is no power or strength except from Allah).” This Hadith was also recorded in the Two Sahihs, and Abu Dawud, An-Nasa’i, At-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah recorded similar wordings.

Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: The supplication of the servant is granted in case he does not supplicate for sin or for severing the ties of blood, or he does not become impatient. It was said: Allah’s Messenger, what does:” If he does not grow impatient” imply? He said: That he should say like this: I supplicated and I supplicated but I did not find it being responded. and thus he becomes frustrated and abandons supplication. (Muslim :: Book 35 : Hadith 6595) 

So let us talk to Allah, specially when all alone. In fact Tahajjad is the best time when man is all alone, sitting in remote corner of his house and crying his heart out to all. One doesn't have to have any set format to talking to Allah. Say what you wan to say in any language, not necessarily Arabic and take time in doing so. Don't hurry it up. And talk to Allah with a conviction that He will fulfill His promise to listen to you and would grant you something which is best for you, not what you think what is best for you.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and help us to act upon the commandments of Allah contained therein. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.

Men of understanding! Know that good and bad cannot be equal, though bad often pleases you

All our life is spent playing the tug of war game - pushing and pulling the bad away and pulling the good. Yet the evil is so powerful that often get pulled away to the evil camp for evil is always pleasing, tempting and inciting. However, state keeps us feeling guilty much too often, for as long as the light of truth keeps burning in our hearts. Those who continue to be pulled away from the righteous path, one day become so burdensome with the evil that it becomes difficult for them to turn back.

And this phenomenon is not restricted to evil and good. This happens in every sphere of life: Deceit remains tempting and a top priority for many, by harming others for own pleasures. No Divine Faith encourages adopting the evil or the bad. Yet we always get carried away for evil  

With this premise, now let us read the 100th verse of Surah 3. Al Maidah, in which Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has been asked to warn the people to sway away from bad and do good, for these two cannot be equated, even though the former looks pleasing:

قُلْ لَّا يَسۡتَوِى الۡخَبِيۡثُ وَالطَّيِّبُ وَلَوۡ اَعۡجَبَكَ كَثۡرَةُ الۡخَبِيۡثِ​ ۚ فَاتَّقُوا اللّٰهَ يٰۤاُولِى الۡاَ لۡبَابِ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تُفۡلِحُوۡنَ
(5:100) (O Messenger!) Say to them: "The bad things and the good things are not equal, even though the abundance of the bad things might make you pleased with them. Men of understanding, beware of disobeying Allah; then maybe you will attain true success.'

This verse sets up a new standard of values, which is quite different from the standard of those who look only at the outward aspect of things. Such people usually judge things by their quantity and not by their quality. For instance, one hundred rupees are always considered greater in value than five rupees by one who does not attach any value to the means by which these might have been obtained. But contrary to this evaluation, this verse declares that if these one hundred rupees have been obtained by unfair means and those five rupees earned by fair means, then the former are less in worth because of their impurity than the latter because of their purity. According to this standard, it is not the number or the quantity of a thing that increases or decreases its true worth but the question whether it has been obtained by fair means or foul. Obviously, a drop of rose scent has greater value than a heap of filth and a cup of pure water is tar greater in worth than a cistern full of impure urine. Therefore one who is really wise will always remain content with the lawful, though it may appear to be very insignificant and worthless, and will never try to grab the unlawful, though it might appear to be very alluring and grand.

Tafsir Ibn e Kathir: Tayyab and Khabeeth are Not Equal
In this ayah, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala commands the Prophet salAllahu aalyhi wa sallam to convey us that there is no comparison between the pure and the impure. We may be surrounded by the impure but this abundance doesn’t make it lawful for consumption.

He says: (قُل لاَّ يَسْتَوِى الْخَبِيثُ وَالطَّيِّبُ وَلَوْ أَعْجَبَكَ كَثْرَةُ الْخَبِيثِ فَاتَّقُواْ اللَّهَ يأُوْلِى الاٌّلْبَـبِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ - “Say: ‘Not equal are the bad things and the good things, even though the abundance of the bad may please you.’ So have Taqwa of Allah, O men of understanding in order that you may be successful.”

The word yastawa يَسْتَوِى is from the root letters seen-wau-ya which means equivalent.

The word tayyab طَّيِّب  refers to that which is pure while khabeeth خَبِيثُ is impure or bad. It is the Law of Allah that decides what is impure and what is pure. For example, apparently a thing may seem clean but it will spiritually impure. Similarly, we may see a dirty object but spiritually it may be clean. So, this includes both spiritual purity and spiritual impurity as well as physically purity and physical impurity.

A spiritually impure person will be one who has hypocrisy in his heart. He does shirk or his akhlaq is awful. He may be physically clean though. On the other hand, there is a person who doesn’t appear physically clean but he is a sincere believer with good akhlaq.

Physical impurity can include an action that’s bad such as yelling at someone, giving someone a dirty look, not doing something in time, disobeying and hurting others.

Remembering Allah, doing dhikr can never be equal to backbiting. Reciting Qur’an and reading that which arouses sexual desire cannot be same. Tayyab food is that which is halal while khabeeth is that which is haram and unclean.

Therefore, tayyab and khabeeth can never be same even if there is abundance of evil and impurity. For example, everyone is uttering a bad word, we tell our nafs, “It’s okay to say it because everyone else is doing so.” We are surrounded by alcohol. We see a lot of variety. Yet we cannot opt for it. It is khabeeth for us.

If we have Taqwa of Allah, His fear and consciousness we will stay away from the khabeeth even if everyone is running after it. People of Taqwa have sound minds. They avoid and abandon the impermissible, and let the permissible be sufficient for them.


Yusuf Ali Explanation
People often judge by quantity rather than quality. They are dazzled by numbers: their hearts are captured by what they see everywhere around them. But the man of understanding and discrimination judges by a different standard. He knows that good and bad things are not to be lumped together, and carefully chooses the best, which may be the scarcest, and avoids the bad, though evil may meet him at every step.

Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Explanation:
This style of an admonition after another is meant to explain that God knows everything and people should be aware that none of their deeds are hidden from Him, and just as He is Forgiving and Merciful, He is also stern in retribution. The Prophet of God has explained this fact to them. It is now their responsibility. They should remember that God is absolute good and an embodiment of truth and justice. He cannot deal with good and evil in the same manner. It is possible that the abundance of evil attract people, but this abundance carries no weight before God. He only accepts what is pure, and only those who adopt piety and virtue will succeed before Him. In His sight, contaminated concepts and deeds and impure things will result in nothing but Hell.

Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:
At the concluding part of this passage God provides us with a standard so that we may give correct judgement of all things. In these scales, only what is good and wholesome is weighty, while that which is foul and evil carries no weight. This prevents a Muslim from being deceived when he finds that the foul is plentiful and the evil too numerous. Evil and good are mentioned here within the context of elaborating which food and game are permissible and which are forbidden. What is forbidden is evil, while everything that is permissible is good. Certainly the good and the evil cannot be equal, even though the evil may come in such plenty that it attracts and tempts people. That which is good provides enjoyment that is not followed by foul consequences, such as regret, waste, pain or disease. The pleasure gained out of evil things cannot be matched even by a modicum of the good things in life. What is more is that with the good things, man enjoys safety in this life and in the life to come. When the human mind is free of the shackles of desire as a result of its being God-fearing and when it has attained a keen watchfulness, it will inevitably prefer good to evil. This is bound to end in success and triumph, both in this world and in the Hereafter: “Have fear of God, you who are endowed with understanding, so that you may triumph.” This verse especially suits the present occasion, but it has a much wider implication. It looks to a broad horizon, encompassing life in its totality.

LESSONS from this verse:
  • Tayyab and Khabeeth are not the same in the Sight of Allah and in the sight of those who have aqal. When people know pure and impure are not the same, only then we are going to stay away from the khabeeth. Otherwise yelling at someone and speaking politely will become equal. We need to develop in ourselves the knowledge that good and bad cannot be equal.
  • Since Tayyab and Khabeeth are not the same, we should like the Tayyab and leave the Khabeeth. Generally, we choose whatever is “in” or famous even if it goes against the Deen. We wear clothing which is in trend even if it doesn’t cover the aura. When it comes to clothing, eating and talking we do that which is common. Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala tells us don’t go for Khabeeth even if you are surrounded by it. Khabeeth makes us negligent of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala.
  • We are taught our focus should not be on the “quantity” but the quality. For example, we go to the grocery and we see a box of strawberries which is being offered at a discounted price but has fungus growing over it, are we going to buy it? No. Then why when it comes to the Deen we don’t look at the Tayyab but blindly follow the crowd.
We learn from a hadeeth when a person gives something as small as a date earned from halal income it has more value than a mountain of wealth earned from haram means.
  • When sisters adopt the Hijab they wear it in such a manner that it doesn’t cover the aura. A fancy headscarf with tight-fitted garment is not hijab. Similarly, brothers have invented their own “designs” of beard that is not the Sunnah of the Prophet salAllahu aalyhi wa sallam.
Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says in Surah Sa’d ayah 28, “Or should we treat those who believe and do righteous deeds like corrupters in the land? Or should We treat those who fear Allah like the wicked?”

People of intellect do not follow the crowd. They don’t look at Hijab “models” and see how they are dressed up. They don’t look at different “designs” of beard and adopt them. They study the Shariah and follow it.

Abdullah ibn Mubarak said, “Keeping myself clean from consuming a doubtful dirham is more charitable to me than giving 100,000 dirhams in charity.” 
  • The abundance and variety of the Khabeeth is also a test. We see haram everywhere and we become desensitize. People are not particular about what they are watching on TV or the Internet, what kind of books or literature they are reading, what kind of food they are consuming. This is a test from Allah to determine who fears Him without seeing Him.
  • Fear of Allah is in our hearts. A person cannot stay away from the evil unless he has dislike for it in his heart. If he likes something he will accept it even if it means going against the commands of Allah. Are we that impressed with the Khabeeth?
  • People who have intellect they will differentiate between the Tayyab and Khabeeth that is the key to their success.
In the light of the above quoted verse, let us be armed with adequate wisdom and understanding to fight back when evil seems to be overpower us or when worldly things start to please us more than the life of the Hereafter. Those who have form faith, do not let their hearts waver and continue to follow the Siraat al Mustaqeem.
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 
وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.
