Fasting in Ramadan: A chance to reformat our sinful memory (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

Man has always been susceptible to the enticement of the Satan to commit sin, harm others and become arrogant of one's achievements rather than attributing them to Allah. The pleasure of committing is so intense that even the most pious sometimes fall into the Satanic trap, only to be left with shame, sorrow and regret.

Cognizant of man's weakness to give into the Satanic machination, Allah provides fasting specially in the month of Ramadan, or even otherwise throughout the year for the man to come clean out of his sinful past or acts and reformat his dark memory. Fasting, thus of done with complete and sincere faith faith in Allah can help us out from continuing to live with our bad or dark memory.

The hadith of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ being shared today carries this glad tidings for the believers for a chance to reformat their bad memory. This Hadith is mentioned in Sahi al-Bukhārī  (Book 30 - Fasting /  كتاب الصوم / Chapter 6:  Whoever observed fast in Ramadan out of sincere Faith with honest intention / باب مَنْ صَامَ رَمَضَانَ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا وَنِيَّةً نَاسِيًا) as Hadith 1901, given herein under:

Narrated by Abu Huraira:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Whoever established prayers on the night of Qadr out of sincere faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven; and whoever fasts in the month of Ramadan out of sincere faith, and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven."

Arabic Text:

حَدَّثَنَا مُسْلِمُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ "‏ مَنْ قَامَ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ، وَمَنْ صَامَ رَمَضَانَ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ ‏"‏‏.‏

Let us, in the light of the above quoted Hadith, make our fasting a way out of our darker past and reformat our part of the memory, that contains terabytes of porn stuff, sins, mistakes and actions that harmed others for the sake of taking self benefits, and start over yet again afresh never to commit sins again. In sha Allah!

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

A comprehensive Hadith about virtues of Remembering Allah, helping others, learning and teaching Qur'an

Today, in our series of posts on Hadiths attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, we share a very comprehensive Hadith which provides guidelines on How to remember Allah, and repenting one's sins and seeking forgiveness. The Hadiths also sheds light on the virtue of helping the Muslim brethren and concealing others' faults.  We must ponder over every word of this Hadith, for it may bring about a phenomenal change in our lives and help us becoming a better Muslim and servant of Allah. In short, it is said that Allah is at the back of a servant so long as the servant is at the back of his brother.

This Hadith is quoted in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: Book 48 The Book Pertaining to the Remembrance of Allah, Supplication, Repentance and Seeking Forgiveness - كتاب الذكر والدعاء والتوبة والاستغفار / Chapter # 11 The Virtue Of Gathering To Read Quran And To Remember Allah / باب  فَضْلِ الاِجْتِمَاعِ عَلَى تِلاَوَةِ الْقُرْآنِ وَعَلَى الذِّكْرِ ‏‏‏) as Hadith number # 2669a as under:

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:

He who alleviates the suffering of a brother out of the sufferings of the world, Allah would alleviate his suffering from the sufferings of the Day of Resurrection, and he who finds relief for one who is hard-pressed, Allah would make things easy for him in the Hereafter, and he who conceals (the faults) of a Muslim, Allah would conceal his faults in the world and in the Hereafter. Allah is at the back of a servant so long as the servant is at the back of his brother, and he who treads the path in search of knowledge, Allah would make that path easy, leading to Paradise for him and those persons who assemble in the house among the houses of Allah (mosques) and recite the Book of Allah and they learn and teach the Qur'an (among themselves) there would descend upon them tranquility and mercy would cover them and the angels would surround them and Allah mentions them in the presence of those near Him, and he who is slow-paced in doing good deeds, his (high) lineage does not make him go ahead.

Arabic Text:

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى التَّمِيمِيُّ، وَأَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَلاَءِ الْهَمْدَانِيُّ - وَاللَّفْظُ لِيَحْيَى - قَالَ يَحْيَى أَخْبَرَنَا وَقَالَ الآخَرَانِ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ "‏ مَنْ نَفَّسَ عَنْ مُؤْمِنٍ كُرْبَةً مِنْ كُرَبِ الدُّنْيَا نَفَّسَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ كُرْبَةً مِنْ كُرَبِ يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ وَمَنْ يَسَّرَ عَلَى مُعْسِرٍ يَسَّرَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالآخِرَةِ وَمَنْ سَتَرَ مُسْلِمًا سَتَرَهُ اللَّهُ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالآخِرَةِ وَاللَّهُ فِي عَوْنِ الْعَبْدِ مَا كَانَ الْعَبْدُ فِي عَوْنِ أَخِيهِ وَمَنْ سَلَكَ طَرِيقًا يَلْتَمِسُ فِيهِ عِلْمًا سَهَّلَ اللَّهُ لَهُ بِهِ طَرِيقًا إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ وَمَا اجْتَمَعَ قَوْمٌ فِي بَيْتٍ مِنْ بُيُوتِ اللَّهِ يَتْلُونَ كِتَابَ اللَّهِ وَيَتَدَارَسُونَهُ بَيْنَهُمْ إِلاَّ نَزَلَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ السَّكِينَةُ وَغَشِيَتْهُمُ الرَّحْمَةُ وَحَفَّتْهُمُ الْمَلاَئِكَةُ وَذَكَرَهُمُ اللَّهُ فِيمَنْ عِنْدَهُ وَمَنْ بَطَّأَ بِهِ عَمَلُهُ لَمْ يُسْرِعْ بِهِ نَسَبُهُ ‏"‏ ‏.

The emphasis of this Hadith is on three four: Helping Muslims brethren and concealing their fault, seeking knowledge even if one has to travel far off places, remembering Allah, and learning and teaching Qur'an.

If we concentrate and try to go into the depth of what has been said, we can really reform ourselves to be a better and well read Muslim, always ready to help others for Allah promises that He will be at the back of a servant so long as the servant is at the back of his brother. This is a big message for all Muslims that tells us to be there always when another Muslim brother is in need of f every Muslim. Likewise, seeking knowledge is an obligation on every Muslim for without knowledge neither one can understand Islam nor can understand the Divine wisdom and guidance as mentioned in Qur'an.

Remembering Allah, it is being said, should be more than often. Muslims should gather in places of worship or even otherwise and remember Allah much to often. However, it does not mean doing Dhikar collectively, but sitting together and sharing knowledge of Qur'an and what and how Allah directs us to be better Muslims.

And blessed are those who not only learn Qur'an but also teach Qur'an to others so that spread of words of Allah never stops.  Here the teaching of Qur'an not merely means just remembering the text, but also its meaning with reference to the context so that we know what Allah wants us to be.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. Ramadan: Eating forgetfully does not Invalidate the Fast (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

Ramadan is a month of enforcing self discipline on self and refrain from eating and drinking and many other  aspects as have already mentioned in number of our earlier posts. Today we take a very important aspect of fasting which often misinterpreted by many. This is regarding eating and drinking forgetfully and when one realizes that he has violated the basics of fasting, he is confused and does not know what to do.

We share a hadith of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ which clarifies the issue and makes things very clear. This Hadith is mentioned in Sahi al-Bukhārī  (Book 30 - Fasting /  كتاب الصوم / Chapter 26:  If a person observing Saum ate or drank forgetfully / باب الصَّائِمِ إِذَا أَكَلَ أَوْ شَرِبَ نَاسِيًا) as Hadith 1993, given herein under:

Narrated by Abu Huraira:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "If somebody eats or drinks forgetfully then he should complete his fast, for what he has eaten or drunk, has been given to him by Allah."

Arabic Text:

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدَانُ، أَخْبَرَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ سِيرِينَ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ "‏ إِذَا نَسِيَ فَأَكَلَ وَشَرِبَ فَلْيُتِمَّ صَوْمَهُ، فَإِنَّمَا أَطْعَمَهُ اللَّهُ وَسَقَاهُ ‏"‏‏.‏

Explanation:

• Unintentional Actions: The hadith clarifies that if a person eats or drinks by mistake or forgets that they are fasting, their fast is still valid, and they are not required to make up for that part of the fast later. This shows the mercy and understanding of Allah toward His servants.
• Allah’s Will: The phrase "for what he has eaten or drunk, has been given to him by Allah" highlights that the food or drink that was consumed during forgetfulness is not considered a violation of the fast, because it happened due to Allah’s will. In essence, it is as if Allah allowed this action to happen for the individual’s benefit, and thus, there is no sin attached to it.
• Completing the Fast: Despite the accidental consumption, the person should continue fasting for the rest of the day, as the fast is still valid. This encourages a person to stay committed to their fast even if something unintended happens.
• Mercy of Allah: The hadith demonstrates Allah’s mercy and kindness. If someone makes an honest mistake, He does not penalize them, and instead, they are to complete their fast with no further obligations. This is a reassurance for people that Allah understands human nature and doesn’t hold us accountable for actions that are beyond our control, such as forgetfulness.

In conclusion, this hadith teaches that forgetfulness does not break the fast, and the person should continue to observe the fast, knowing that Allah is merciful and understanding. It emphasizes the importance of intention in Islamic acts of worship, and that accidental actions without intent to break the fast are forgiven by Allah. This also applies to all acts that are otherwise restricted or not allowed while fasting. He should then seek forgiveness while repenting is forgetful act. Allah in all His mercy will forgive him. In sha Allah

The Benevolent treatment of daughters would protect parents against Hell-Fire (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

Women in Islam assume a very elevated status and at many a places in Qur'an, believers have been commanded to be extra courteous and respectful towards women. Whereas many critics of Islam accuse Islam for being unjust to women and restricting their independence confining them to homes and forcing them to drape themselves in Hijab. There is  a long list of such accusation about women and their ill treatment. Such negative attitude stems from ignorance or base propaganda. Whereas more and more non-Muslims are entering fold of Islam, a majority of which is women. Non-Muslim women get attracted to Islam for the very elevated status Islam accords to women.

There is two complete chapters, namely Surah 4. An Nisa (The Women) and Surah 58. Al Mujadilah (The Pleading Woman) dedicated to women and their special status in Islam. In times when Islam was taking its roots among the pagans of Arabia, there was an abhorring tradition of burying the newly born baby girls alive as the pagans of Arabia considered them a too lowly creature and against their honour. This tradition was strictly abolished upon proclamation of Islam. We have already published a post based on the inhuman treatment to newly born baby girls. With this premise in the backdrop, let us today share a n important Hadith of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in which he specifically talks on how the Benevolent treatment of daughters would protect parents against Hell-Fire. 

This Hadith is quoted in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: Book 45 The Book of Virtue, Enjoining Good Manners, and Joining of the Ties of Kinship - كتاب البر والصلة والآداب / Chapter # 46 The Virtue Of Treating Daughters Well / باب فَضْلِ الإِحْسَانِ إِلَى الْبَنَاتِ ‏‏‏) as Hadith number # 2629 as under:

'A'isha, the wife of Allah's Apostle (ﷺ), said:

A woman came to me along with her two daughters. She asked me for (charity) but she found nothing with me except one date, so I gave her that. She accepted it and then divided it between her two daughters and herself ate nothing out of that. She then got up and went out, and so did her two daughters. (In the meanwhile) Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) visited me and I narrated to him her story. Thereupon Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) said: He who is involved (in the responsibility) of (bringing up) daughters, and he accords benevolent treatment towards them, there would be protection for him against Hell-Fire.

Arabic Text:

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ قُهْزَاذَ، حَدَّثَنَا سَلَمَةُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ حَزْمٍ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، ح

وَحَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ بَهْرَامَ، وَأَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ - وَاللَّفْظُ لَهُمَا - قَالاَ أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْيَمَانِ، أَخْبَرَنَا شُعَيْبٌ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ، أَنَّأَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجَ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَتْ جَاءَتْنِي امْرَأَةٌ وَمَعَهَا ابْنَتَانِ لَهَا فَسَأَلَتْنِي فَلَمْ تَجِدْ عِنْدِي شَيْئًا غَيْرَ تَمْرَةٍ وَاحِدَةٍ فَأَعْطَيْتُهَا إِيَّاهَا فَأَخَذَتْهَا فَقَسَمَتْهَا بَيْنَ ابْنَتَيْهَا وَلَمْ تَأْكُلْ مِنْهَا شَيْئًا ثُمَّ قَامَتْ فَخَرَجَتْ وَابْنَتَاهَا فَدَخَلَ عَلَىَّ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَحَدَّثْتُهُ حَدِيثَهَا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ "‏ مَنِ ابْتُلِيَ مِنَ الْبَنَاتِ بِشَىْءٍ فَأَحْسَنَ إِلَيْهِنَّ كُنَّ لَهُ سِتْرًا مِنَ 

النَّارِ ‏"‏ ‏.‏

This is how Islam accords a very high status for the parents of daughters for on the Day of Judgment,  lovingly, well groomed and raised daughters will become a shield for their parents against the fire of Hell. Let all those parents blessed with daughters be mindful of the blessings of Allah they have been blessed with in the form of their daughters. While sons too are a blessing of Allah, nonetheless, the raising of daughters take precedence over them for they are guests in their parent's' house and would leave one day after marriage. A better trained girl when becomes a mother, she continues to transform the preferential treatment meted out to her by her parents so that her daughters to learn the same and the cycle should continue.

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

Believers! Do not raise your voice when calling thy Lord

Or religion Islam teaches us etiquettes when addressing our elders or when in the company of others. This is essential to establish a healthy and loving company even if there are only two people sitting together. It is also taught to us that wen addressing or even talking to each other, we must never raise our voice for the worst raised voice is that of a braying donkey.

And if so much emphasis is laid on the mode and volume of the inter personal communication, shouldn't we be careful when addressing Allah, the unchallenged Lord of the worlds? It is genially seen lamenting women raising their voice and trying to put across their grievance to Allah. This is something against the very etiquette of addressing our Lord, for neither He is deaf, nor absent, for He is always very near to us and always listening and hearing.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is quoted to have talked on this very irritant aspect of man's behaviour and has warned to be merciful to our souls and learn the etiquette of addressing Allah with respect, diginity and lower our tone for He is not be yelled at all. 

This Hadith is mentioned in Sahi al-Bukhārī  (Book 56 - Fighting for the Cause of Allah (Jihaad) /  كتاب الجهاد والسير / Chapter 131:  Raising the voice when saying Takbir / باب مَا يُكْرَهُ مِنْ رَفْعِ الصَّوْتِ فِي التَّكْبِيرِ) as Hadith 2992, given herein under:

Narrated by Abu Musa Al-Ash`ari: We were in the company of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) (during Hajj). Whenever we went up a high place we used to say: "None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and Allah is Greater," and our voices used to rise, so the Prophet (ﷺ) said, 

"O people! Be merciful to yourselves (i.e. don't raise your voice), for you are not calling a deaf or an absent one, but One Who is with you, no doubt He is All-Hearer, ever Near (to all things).

Arabic Text:

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى الأَشْعَرِيِّ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ قَالَ كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم، فَكُنَّا إِذَا أَشْرَفْنَا عَلَى وَادٍ هَلَّلْنَا وَكَبَّرْنَا ارْتَفَعَتْ أَصْوَاتُنَا، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ "‏ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ، ارْبَعُوا عَلَى أَنْفُسِكُمْ، فَإِنَّكُمْ لاَ تَدْعُونَ أَصَمَّ وَلاَ غَائِبًا، إِنَّهُ مَعَكُمْ، إِنَّهُ سَمِيعٌ قَرِيبٌ، تَبَارَكَ اسْمُهُ وَتَعَالَى جَدُّهُ ‏"‏‏.‏

Let us, thus, be always mindful of our tone and volume trying to  when addressing Allah and be very humble and respectful to speak to Allah, even when trying to put across our grievances. May Allah help us to be merciful to ourselves and know the etiquette of addressing the Lord of the worlds.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.

Ramadan: Fasting is a shield (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

The month of Ramadan assumes special significance for the Muslims for fasting during the month is one of the most pleasing acts of a believer in the eyes of Allah. It is a month full of blessings of Allah for His servants. Any good act during this month has far more rewarding than the months other than the Ramadan.

It is the month in which the fast acts as a deterrent for the evil to come close to the fasting men and women. For this very reason Prophet Muhammad ﷺ called fasting as a shield for the fasting men. 

I first heard this Hadith in my childhood and since then it is ingrained in my memory. 

This Hadith is mentioned in Sahi al-Bukhārī  (Book 30 - Fasting /  كتاب االصوم / Chapter 2:  The superiority of As-Saum (the fasting) / باب فَضْلِ الصَّوْمِ) as Hadith 1894, given herein under:

Narrated by Abu Huraira:

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Fasting is a shield (or a screen or a shelter). So, the person observing fasting should avoid sexual relation with his wife and should not behave foolishly and impudently, and if somebody fights with him or abuses him, he should tell him twice, 'I am fasting." The Prophet (ﷺ) added, "By Him in Whose Hands my soul is, the smell coming out from the mouth of a fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the smell of musk. (Allah says about the fasting person), 'He has left his food, drink and desires for My sake. The fast is for Me. So I will reward (the fasting person) for it and the reward of good deeds is multiplied ten times."

Arabic Text:

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ، عَنِ الأَعْرَجِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ "‏ الصِّيَامُ جُنَّةٌ، فَلاَ يَرْفُثْ وَلاَ يَجْهَلْ، وَإِنِ امْرُؤٌ قَاتَلَهُ أَوْ شَاتَمَهُ فَلْيَقُلْ إِنِّي صَائِمٌ‏.‏ مَرَّتَيْنِ، وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَخُلُوفُ فَمِ الصَّائِمِ أَطْيَبُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى مِنْ رِيحِ الْمِسْكِ، يَتْرُكُ طَعَامَهُ وَشَرَابَهُ وَشَهْوَتَهُ مِنْ أَجْلِي، الصِّيَامُ لِي، وَأَنَا أَجْزِي بِهِ، وَالْحَسَنَةُ بِعَشْرِ أَمْثَالِهَا ‏"‏‏.‏

As we know a shield is protective gear for the soldiers which is used to shield / protect oneself from the incoming arrows or lances or even bullets. This is the artful use of the shield by which a soldier can protect himself from any harm to him. Likewise, fast or saum has been referred to as shield or screen by the revered Prophet Muhammad ﷺ which means that a fasting man must use his fast as a shield against all attempts of the evil which may invalidate his saum. Thus, the fasting must guard his fast by adopting a good attitude and avoiding a bad one, so that fasting will produce the expected results and thus he will earn the forgiveness that is promised in return.

Responding to Objections about Islam: Why Muslims starve themselves by during month of Ramadan?

There is general ignorance and resultant misconception about Islam, its basic pillars, form of worship, rituals and festivals among the non Muslims around the world. Thus most of the objections raised against Islam are generally because of ignorance and insuffient knowledge. We have been trying to address these objections, misinformation and disinformation, beside naked criticism about Islam in our series of posts, which have been combined in our reference page: The Rebuttal: Countering disinformation being spread about Islam.

Today we share an objection which basically stems from the ignorance of one's own faith for many even do not know what their faith directs and expects of them. And one of the objection is about fasting by Muslims in the month of Ramadan. In one of many posts on Ramadan, one non Muslim objected: Why Muslims starve themselves by during month of Ramadan?

We start answering this question from a verse from Qur'an in which its is said that fasting is made obligatory to all Muslims as was made for the previous people:

O you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may develop God-consciousness. — Quran 2:183

The first thing that we make it clear that fasting is not exclusive to Muslims only. In fact fasting has been observed by the Jews and Christians as ordained by the Holy Scriptures they follow. It is another thing that by and by Jews and Christians (mostly) have distanced them from the teachings of their Holy Books and drifted away from the obligation made upon them of fasting. Muslims have firm faith that when they fast, they fast exclusively to please Allah, and in return Allah has promised special rewards for them for they have abstained all pleasures otherwise Halal for them for sake of Allah.

Let us see how fasting is observed by the Jews and Christians, traditionally and not practically as very few adhere to fasting being a Divine obligation:

Fasting in Judaism: There are six days in a year when observant Jews fast. Two “Major Fasts” call for a fast from sundown on the day before to sundown on the day itself, and four “Minor Fasts” call for a fast from sunrise to sundown. Jews have many fast days, most famously Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. Unlike the days of Ramadan, that is a full-day fast, from sunset one evening before to nightfall the following evening. Fasting in Judaism requires a strong commitment. While some contemporary fasts may involve choosing specific items to abstain from, traditional Jewish fasting entails refraining from everything. It goes beyond abstaining from food and includes restrictions on water consumption, extending to activities like brushing teeth and bathing.

Fasting by Christians: Fasting is a practice in several Christian denominations and is done both collectively during certain seasons of the liturgical calendar, or individually as a believer feels led by the Holy Spirit. Many Christians also fast before receiving Holy Communion. This is known as the Eucharistic Fast. The Teaching of the Twelve Apostles, written in the first century A.D., directed Christians to fast on both Wednesdays, in remembrance of the betrayal of Christ by Judas on Spy Wednesday, and Fridays, in mourning of the crucifixion of Jesus on Good Friday.[17] Historically, the Orthodox, Catholic, Anglican and Methodist denominations of Christianity have emphasized the importance of the Friday fast, which has traditionally involved fasting and abstinence from meat, lacticinia and alcohol. In Western Christianity, fasting is observed during the forty-day season of Lent by many communicants of the Catholic Church, Lutheran Churches, Anglican Communion, Moravian Church, Methodist Churches, Western Orthodox Churches, United Protestant Churches and certain Reformed Churches, to commemorate the fast observed by Christ during his temptation in the desert.

Therefore, it should not come as a surprise for people of other faiths why Muslims "starve" themselves during the month of Ramadan. In fact fasting has many health benefits, And for this very reason, the concept of intermittent fasting is getting popular around the world.  Besides it is regarded principally as a method of self purification. By cutting oneself off from worldly comforts, even for a short time, a fasting person gains true sympathy with those who go hungry as well as growth in one's spiritual life.

• The first object of fasting in Islam is that it has been Divinely ordained for us to fast, for the sole pleasure of our Creator. We leave what is otherwise Halal for us during the period of fasting, that commences from pre-dawn to sunset. 
• Secondly, fasting is prescribed only for the able bodied, adult and healthy men and women. Even there are concessions given for the travelers to abstain from fasting and make up for the missed fasts during travel when back from journey.
• (Fasting) for a fixed number of days; but if any of you is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed number (Should be made up) from days later. For those who can do it (With hardship), is a ransom, the feeding of one that is indigent. But he that will give more, of his own free will,- it is better for him. And it is better for you that ye fast, if ye only knew. - Surah 2 Al Baqarah (The Cow):184
• Ramadhan is the (month) in which was sent down the Qur'an, as a guide to mankind, also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (Between right and wrong). So every one of you who is present (at his home) during that month should spend it in fasting, but if any one is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed period (Should be made up) by days later. Allah intends every facility for you; He does not want to put to difficulties. (He wants you) to complete the prescribed period, and to glorify Him in that He has guided you; and perchance ye shall be grateful. - Surah 2 Al Baqarah (The Cow):185
• In one of his Hadiths, Allah's Messenger Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, "Allah said, 'All the deeds of Adam's sons (people) are for them, except fasting which is for Me, and I will give the reward for it.' Fasting is a shield or protection from the fire and from committing sins. If one of you is fasting, he should avoid sexual relation with his wife and quarreling, and if somebody should fight or quarrel with him, he should say, 'I am fasting.' By Him in Whose Hands my soul is' The unpleasant smell coming out from the mouth of a fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the smell of musk. There are two pleasures for the fasting person, one at the time of breaking his fast, and the other at the time when he will meet his Lord; then he will be pleased because of his fasting." - Sahi al-Bukhārī Hadith 1904
• The fasting also creates a feeling of affection and love for people who are less blessed, for both the rich and poor feel the same amount of thirst and hunger when they are fasting.
• Since Islamic calendar is based on lunar movement rather than sun, the month of Ramadan keeps advancing by ten days every year. This means one will be fasting in severe winters to severe summers and men fasting would know how the poor brave their fasts during the extreme weather, specially the summers.

No matter how one fasts, it has numerous health, spiritual and social benefits. 

Spiritually, it cleans one inner self and removes the bugs left behind evil and ill thoughts. The spiritual discipline that can help you draw closer to God, humble yourself before Him, resist temptation, seek His guidance, and show solidarity with others. By fasting and praying, you can grow in our relationship with God and become more obedient to His will.

Fasting has pleasant effects of one's health and body.  It can can slow down aging, prevent the development of diabetes, thyroid disorders, hypertension and heart disease and increase the chances of a long and healthy life. It also promotes weight loss. A healthy body weight automatically translates to healthier joints and a great body image. The concept of intermittent fasting which has lately become very popular and is widely adopted is based on the fasting which is applicable to people of the varying faiths.

Fasting also has its social dimension. Since the basic purpose of fasting is to discipline oneself, A fasting man is not allowed to use foul language and be harsh to others for it is against the spirit of fasting. It aids in preventing quarrels, backbiting and lies and fighting. This sudden change can have healthy effects on the society for everyone would be making an endeavour to be good to others to take full benefits of fasting as promised by Allah.

Thus, Fasting is not merely starving oneself, but is primarily an exercise of devotion to willingly renounce oneself, for a definite period of time, from all bodily appetites in order to form spiritual discipline and self-control.  And Muslims with for this month of 30 days fasting to observe fasting to please Allah and be rewarded.

Since the basic purpose of fasting is to discipline oneself, A fasting man is not allowed to use foul language and be harsh to others for it is against the spirit of fasting. It aids in preventing quarrels, backbiting and lies and fighting. This sudden change can have healthy effects on the society for everyone would be making an endeavour to be good to others to take full benefits of fasting as promised by Allah.

We share today a wholesome Hadith attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ which lays down the basic guidelines for fasting which please Allah and thus the reciprocal reward. At the end of two pleasures of a fasting person are mentioned. We will explain these after you read the hadith.

This Hadith is mentioned in Sahi al-Bukhārī  (Book 30 - Fasting /  كتاب االصوم / Chapter 9:  Should one say, "I am observing Saum (fast)" on being abused? / باب هَلْ يَقُولُ إِنِّي صَائِمٌ إِذَا شُتِمَ) as Hadith 1904, given herein under:

Narrated by Abu Huraira:

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Allah said, 'All the deeds of Adam's sons (people) are for them, except fasting which is for Me, and I will give the reward for it.' Fasting is a shield or protection from the fire and from committing sins. If one of you is fasting, he should avoid sexual relation with his wife and quarreling, and if somebody should fight or quarrel with him, he should say, 'I am fasting.' By Him in Whose Hands my soul is' The unpleasant smell coming out from the mouth of a fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the smell of musk. There are two pleasures for the fasting person, one at the time of breaking his fast, and the other at the time when he will meet his Lord; then he will be pleased because of his fasting."

Arabic Text:

حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُوسَى، أَخْبَرَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي عَطَاءٌ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ الزَّيَّاتِ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ "‏ قَالَ اللَّهُ كُلُّ عَمَلِ ابْنِ آدَمَ لَهُ إِلاَّ الصِّيَامَ، فَإِنَّهُ لِي، وَأَنَا أَجْزِي بِهِ‏.‏ وَالصِّيَامُ جُنَّةٌ، وَإِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ صَوْمِ أَحَدِكُمْ، فَلاَ يَرْفُثْ وَلاَ يَصْخَبْ، فَإِنْ سَابَّهُ أَحَدٌ، أَوْ قَاتَلَهُ فَلْيَقُلْ إِنِّي امْرُؤٌ صَائِمٌ‏.‏ وَالَّذِي نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ لَخُلُوفُ فَمِ الصَّائِمِ أَطْيَبُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ مِنْ رِيحِ الْمِسْكِ، لِلصَّائِمِ فَرْحَتَانِ يَفْرَحُهُمَا إِذَا أَفْطَرَ فَرِحَ، وَإِذَا لَقِيَ رَبَّهُ فَرِحَ بِصَوْمِهِ ‏"‏‏.‏

In the above quoted Hadith, it is Allah Who is telling His servants what He expects of us while we fast. We will not repeat what is mentioned in the Hadith. However, we will discuss the very last part which mentions the two pleasures of a fasting person:

Pleasure of breaking the fast: After a day of avoidance of food and drink, there can be no pleasure better than opening the fast. The pinching thirst during the day, specially in scorching summers is really a great test for a fasting man. I remember my fasting in days of June inn one of the hottest place in my country, Pakistan. The temperature would soar to 50 degrees Celsius during day and we being in the field work would get the worst brunt of the scorching sun overhead. And I cannot explain the pleasure of drinking water, which we drank in gallons, to hydrate our bodies. We used be more attracted towards water than the food. This is the pleasure which is being mentioned here.

Pleasure of meeting Allah: The second the more pronounced pleasure would be when believers fasting for the love of Allah will meet their Creator. That day will be special day for the blessed men of fasting for they will be treated like state guest for the abstained from what is otherwise Halal for the love of their Creator. And Allah will exclusively reward them for fasting.

SO my dear sister and brothers in Islam, let us not waste away our fasting by doing acts which are forbidden during the period of fasting, so that our fasts are accepted and we are duly rewarded.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

Note: When we mention God in our posts, we mean One True God, we call Allah in Islam, with no associates. Allah is the Sole Creator of all things, and that Allah is all-powerful and all-knowing. Allah has no offspring, no race, no gender, no body, and is unaffected by the characteristics of human life.
