Verily I am Allah. So, establish Prayers to remember Me

As Salat (Prayer), the second pillar of Islam, assumes a great importance in the lives of the Muslims fro it established one to one communication between a servant and the Lord of the both worlds. Unless a Muslim offers five obligatory prayers every day, his faith in Allah can never be strong.

We have posted many verses from Qur'an on importance of As Salat (You may refer to our previous posts on As Salt from our reference Page: As Salat and the second reference page on Compiled verses from Qur'an on specific subjects; As Salat). Herein under, we share the 14th verse of Surah 20 Ta Ha that spells out in very plain words what As Salat is, that is solely to remember Allah!!

(20:14) Verily I am Allah. There is no god beside Me. So, serve Me and establish Prayers to remember Me.
This is the real object of Salat. It has been prescribed to remind people that they should not become neglectful of Allah by worldly diversions and that they should remember that man is not an unbridled free being but a servant of Allah. Salat has been prescribed five times a day to remind man of Allah's presence.

Some people are of the opinion that it means: "Establish Salat, so that I may remember you."

Incidentally, according to this verse, if one forgets to offer a prayer in time, one should offer it when one recollects it. This is also supported by a tradition related by Hadrat Anas: "If one forgets to offer a certain prayer at the proper time, he should offer it whenever he recollects this; for there is no other explanation for this omission." (Bukhari, Muslim, Ahmed). There is another tradition related by Abu Hurairah to the same effect. It was inquired from the Holy Prophet: "What should we do if we remained asleep during the time of prayer?" The Holy Prophet said, "There is no sin if one remains asleep. The sin is that one should neglect one's prayer intentionally while awake. Therefore, if one forgets to offer a prayer or remains asleep one should offer that prayer on remembering it or on awaking." (Tirmizi, Nasa'i, Abu Da'ud).

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir
(Verily, I am Allah! There is no God but Me,) This is the first obligation upon all responsible people of age, that they know that there is no God worthy of worship except Allah alone, who has no partners.

Concerning Allah's statement, (so worship Me,) This means, "Single Me out alone for worship, and establish My worship without associating anything with Me.''

(and perform Salah for My remembrance.) It has been said that this means, "Pray in order to remember Me.' It has also been said that it means, "And establish the prayer whenever you remember Me.''

There is supporting evidence for this second statement in a Hadith recorded by Imam Ahmad from Anas, who said that the Messenger of Allah said, (Whenever one of you sleeps past the prayer, or he forgets to pray, then let him pray when he remembers it. For verily, Allah said, (And perform Salah for My remembrance.)) In the Two Sahihs it is reported from Anas that the Messenger of Allah said, (Whoever slept past the prayer, or forgot it, then his expiation is that he prays it when he remembers it. There is no explanation for it other than that.)

Muhammad Asad Explanation:
Thus, conscious remembrance of God and of His oneness and uniqueness is declared to be the innermost purpose, as well as the intellectual justification of all true prayer.

Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Explanation:
This is the first teaching lesson given to every prophet because the whole religion is based on this belief.

After belief in monotheism, this is the first directive of religion: when there is no deity except God, only He should be worshipped. About worship, I have explained at various instances in this book that the essence of worship (‘ibādah) is humility and servility. The first manifestation of this essence is serving the Almighty. Since a person also has a practical life in this world, this servitude relates to this practical life as well and in this manner becomes inclusive of obedience. The manifestations in the first case are glorifying Him and singing His praises, praying to him and supplicating before Him, kneeling and prostrating before Him, making vows (to please Him), offering animal sacrifice and doing i‘tikāf. In the second case, a person, after regarding someone as an independent law giver and ruler, considers that he has the authority to give directives of what is forbidden and what is not and what is allowed and what is not and submits before all his directives. It is the verdict of God Almighty that none of the above-mentioned things can be reserved for someone other than Him.

The status monotheism occupies in beliefs is exactly the same as the prayer occupies in deeds. It is evident from the Qur’ān that the prayer is the foremost consequence of the comprehension of God which one gets after being reminded by His revelations and, as a result of this comprehension, of the emotions of love and gratitude that appear for the Almighty in a person or should appear in him.

Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:
This brief revelation sums up three crucial aspects of the divine faith: belief in God’s oneness, addressing all worship to Him alone, and belief in the Last Hour. These are the foundation of God’s message that remained the same throughout human history.

God’s oneness is the cornerstone of faith. In His address to Moses, God emphasizes it in different forms: first in a statement bearing a strong emphasis, “Indeed, I alone am God.” (Verse 14) Then Godhead is clearly stated as applicable to no one else: “There is no deity other than Me.” (Verse 14) When Godhead is thus established, worship follows. Worship means that every activity should aim to please God. Singled out among all human activity is prayer: “Establish regular prayer to celebrate My praise.” (Verse 14) Prayer is the most complete and perfect of all types of worship celebrating God’s praise. In fact, its sole purpose is such. It discards everything else. Thus, in prayer we are prepared for contact with God.

Now you may listen to the following short clipped video to explanation of the aforesaid Ayat by eminent Muslim scholar Nouman Ali Khan:
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.
وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Note: When we mention God in our posts, we mean One True God, we call Allah in Islam, with no associates. Allah is the Sole Creator of all things, and that Allah is all-powerful and all-knowing. Allah has no offspring, no race, no gender, no body, and is unaffected by the characteristics of human life.

An effort has been made to gather explanation / exegesis of the surahs of the Qur'ān from authentic sources and then present a least possible condensed explanation of the surah. In that the exegesis of the chapters of the Quran is mainly based on the "Tafhim al-Qur'an - The Meaning of the Qur'an" by one of the most enlightened scholars of the Muslim World Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi.
In order to augment and add more explanation as already provided, additional input has been interjected from the following sources:
  • Tafsir Ibn Khatir
  • Muhammad Asad Translation
  • Yusuf Ali Translation
  • Translation Javed Ahmad Ghamidi / Al Mawrid

Compiled verses from Qur'an on Specific Subjects: As Salat (Prayers)

After one pronounces the Shahada, the declaration to become a Muslim, the first obligation imposed on him is to offer five obligatory prayers between pre-dawn to later after dusk timeframe. This highlights the importance of As Salat, without observing which one's faith in Allah cannot be cemented.
The observance of Salat is the key to other acts of worship. The Muslim worshipper, who observes the Salat at the right time and in the manner in which it has been stipulated or prescribed, positions himself for a series of blessings from Almighty Allah. In fact, Salat provides an excellent means of communication between a believer and God. Each word of Salat is in fact a form of a supplication to invoke countless blessings of Allah. During Salt, a believer opens up his heart to Allah and can make any legitimate request to Allah for realization. However, care must be taken not to address Allah during Salat to ask for anything which is not legitimate or calls for harming someone.

Thus, the goal of Salat is to bring the Muslims closer to Allah. By attending prayers in the masjid, one also gets closer to other members of the community which furthers add up to building of a bondage between believers and make them a useful member of community. By getting together, one can share each other's happiness and grief, and may come to know of suffering of someone who can then be helped through obligatory and voluntary charity, that is Zakat and alms.

The importance of Salat can be known from the fact that even during war believers are asked to make two groups: While one group offers Salat, the other guards them against any surprise by the enemy. And when one group finishes, they replace their positions so that the second group too gets to offer their prayers.

Even during travel, one is not absolved of this obligatory act. However, due to discomfort of travel, the even number cycles of the prayer are cut to half.

Throughout Qur'an, the emphasis on observing Salat, followed by Zakat, is in abundance. It has been amply highlighted that those who do not guard their prayers slowly and gradually drift away from remembrance and evil overshadows him from whose shackles it becomes difficult to free oneself. Thus, it is only adherence to Salat regularly five times a day that one can avert the enticement of the Evil and remain steadfast.

We have already compiled all matters related to As Salat in our Reference Page: As Salat (Prayers), which contains reference to posts already published on all queries regarding Salat and general information.

This reference page is a compilation of verses from Qur'an on the subject of As Salat. This is just the beginning and in time we add more verses to make it a comprehensive compilation and to serve as a ready reckoner:
We will keep adding more verses so as to make this collection wholesome.

What is Salat-ut-Tahajjud - The Night Prayer

Day and night are the signs of creation of Allah. While the day takes all humans and creatures from their slumber to work, the cycle reverses by nightfall when all go back to their abodes and a silence sets in till the next dawn. For many, night symbolism describes death, darkness, secrets, and intuition. Often, it’s used to portray death and horror, while in the Bible, night represents a lack of faith in God.

But in Islam, night is the time of peace "( وَالَّيۡلِ اِذَا سَجٰىۙ‏  ) and by the night when it covers the world with peace, (93:2)" and to be near to God while everyone is asleep, a true believer gets up from his sleep and sits in secluded corner of his house and prays and talks his heart to his Creator. And Allah promises that He listens. In fact Islam considers sleep to be one of the great signs of Allāh and asks followers to explore this sign. One Qur'anic verse says, “And among His signs is your sleep by night and by day and your seeking of His bounty, verily in that are signs for those who hearken” (30.23)

Other than the five obligatory prayers that every believer must offer from dawn to late evening, the rising of one's sleep in the last quarter of life before the time of pre dawn prayer (Fajr) begins, the sixth salat / prayer is performed and called Salat-ut-Tahajjud - The Night Prayer  (صلاة التهجد / قِيَامِ اللَّيْلِ). Although this salat was mandatory for the Prophet Muhammad صَلِّ عَلٰی سَيِدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ وَّعَلٰٓی اٰلِہٖ وَسَلِمُ, his companions also picked up this salat and followed the suit of their beloved Prophet صَلِّ عَلٰی سَيِدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ وَّعَلٰٓی اٰلِہٖ وَسَلِمُ.
And during a part of the night, keep awake by the prayer. It is beyond what is incumbent on you; maybe your Lord will raise you to a position of great glory.(Quran 17:79)
The theme of one complete surah, Surah 73. Al-Muzzammil, is dedicated to press upon Prophet Muhammad  ﷺ wherein the Prophet of Allah has been asked to "Stand up in Prayer by night, all but a small part of it (73:2)" . It is further added:
Surely getting up at night is the best means of subduing the self and is more suitable for uprightness in speech. (73:6)
A question arises as to why the Prophet of Allah was ordained for the night prayer. The following verse give out the answer:
(73:7) You are indeed much occupied during the day with the affairs of the world.
(73:8) So remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with exclusive devotion
That is the Prophet of Allah who would remain busy in the task of spreading Allah's commandments and other daily chores and attending to his personal matters being a husband and father,  may not get time to devote time with exclusive devotion to thank his Creator.

Mindful of the stress on His Prophet, Allah adds concessions so that His Prophet does not get over loaded or burdened in his duties of prophethood, Allah adds:
(73:20) (O Prophet), your Lord knows that you sometimes stand up in Prayer nearly two-thirds of the night, and sometimes half or one-third of it, and so does a party of those with you; Allah measures the night and the day. He knows that you cannot keep an accurate count of it, so He has shown mercy to you. So now recite as much of the Qur'an as you can. He knows that there are among you those who are sick and others who are journeying in the land in quest of Allah's bounty, and still others who are fighting in the cause of Allah. So recite as much of the Qur'an as you easily can, and establish Prayer, and pay Zakah, and give Allah a goodly loan. Whatever good you send forth for yourselves, you shall find it with Allah. That is better and its reward is greater.26 And ask for Allah's forgiveness; surely He is Most Forgiving, Most Compassionate.

The Tahajjud prayer is a Nafl prayer, implying that it is optional and missing it isn’t counted as a sin. The Tahajjud prayer is usually performed after Isha (which is the compulsory nightly prayer) and before performing Fajr (the mandatory morning prayer). Tahajjud means to give up sleep, which is why this prayer is preferably performed during the last third of the night. It is believed with firm faith by the believers that Allah comes down to the lowest heaven during this part of the night to see who is dedicatedly worshipping and leaving their sleep in the middle of the night.

Once a believer gets into the habit of rising from his sleep at night and starts to offer Salat ut Tahajjud, the whole complexion of his life changes. In fact once  a believer develops the habit of offering this night prayer, he can never be at rest in his sleep. Rather he automatically gets up and offers salat ut Tahajjud in a  manner that that while ends up with his prayer and offering Dua/supplications, the time of pre dawn prayer (Fajr) would have almost reached. Such believers are sure to earn many blessings of Allah, and brings them closer to Allah and are always on the Straight Path forever.

“And they who pass the night prostrating themselves before their Lord and standing.” (Quran, 25:64)

Prophet of Allah has been quoted as saying: “The Lord descends every night to the lowest heaven when one-third of the night remains and says: ‘Who will call upon Me, that I may answer Him? Who will ask of Me, that I may give him? Who will seek My forgiveness that I may forgive him?’” (Bukhari, Muslim)

The closest that a servant comes to his Lord is during the middle of the latter portion of the night. If you can be among those who remember Allah the Exalted One at that time, then do so. — At-Tirmidhi

It has been narrated by Narrated Ibn `Abbas that When the Prophet (ﷺ) got up at night to offer the Tahajjud prayer, he used to say:

Allahumma lakal-hamd. Anta qaiyyimus-samawati wal-ard wa man fihinna. Walakal-hamd, Laka mulkus-samawati wal-ard wa man fihinna. Walakal-hamd, anta nurus-samawati wal-ard. Wa lakal-hamd, anta-l-haq wa wa'duka-lhaq, wa liqa'uka Haq, wa qauluka Haq, wal-jannatu Han wan-naru Haq wannabiyuna Haq. Wa Muhammadun, sallal-lahu'alaihi wasallam, Haq, was-sa'atu Haq. Allahumma aslamtu Laka wabika amantu, wa 'Alaika tawakkaltu, wa ilaika anabtu wa bika khasamtu, wa ilaika hakamtu faghfir li ma qaddamtu wama akh-khartu wama as-rartu wama'a lantu, anta-l-muqaddim wa anta-l-mu akh-khir, la ilaha illa anta (or la ilaha ghairuka).

(O Allah! All the praises are for you, You are the Holder of the Heavens and the Earth, And whatever is in them. All the praises are for You; You have the possession of the Heavens and the Earth And whatever is in them. All the praises are for You; You are the Light of the Heavens and the Earth And all the praises are for You; You are the King of the Heavens and the Earth; And all the praises are for You; You are the Truth and Your Promise is the truth, And to meet You is true, Your Word is the truth And Paradise is true And Hell is true And all the Prophets (Peace be upon them) are true; And Muhammad is true, And the Day of Resurrection is true. O Allah ! I surrender (my will) to You; I believe in You and depend on You. And repent to You, And with Your help I argue (with my opponents, the non-believers) And I take You as a judge (to judge between us). Please forgive me my previous And future sins; And whatever I concealed or revealed And You are the One who make (some people) forward And (some) backward. There is none to be worshipped but you.

Sufyan said that `Abdul Karim Abu Umaiya added to the above, 'Wala haula Wala quwata illa billah' (There is neither might nor power except with Allah). [Sahi Bukhari - (1)Chapter: The Tahajjud Prayer at night][4]

Many a Muslim complain that they do not get up at the time of night prayer and feel sad for missing it altogether. The reason is that we are generally in the habit of sleeping late, whiling away our time by going out with friends and family or get our selves busy in many forms of entertainment for which we get time only at night. Surfing our mobile phones aimlessly and spending time in chatting with friends makes us so tired that we hardly get any time to sleep to get up in time for the pre dawn prayer.

It is up to us to set right our priorities as the Prophet of Allah had been asked to offer this night prayer as he used to be busy during day time. We should offer our Isha prayer (the last of the five obligatory prayers) and should try to sleep as early as possible so that have a rest of at least two to three hours before time for Salat-ut-Tahajjud commences.

We will explain the modalities of offering Salt ut Tahajjud in one of our next posts. You may also consult the posts given at the reference below.

Note: The explanation of above quoted verses has been avoided. However those desirous of their explanation/tafsir/exegesis, may please read our exclusive post on Surah:  Surah Al-Muzzammil (The Enfolded One): Exegesis/Tafsir of 73rd Chapter of Qur'an.

How to develop Khushoo (Humility / focused concentration) when offering Salat

Most of us offer prayer in one form of the other and talk to God, our Creator as He has ordained us so. Muslims too, like followers of all Divine Religions, offer prayer called As Salt in Arabic. They offer As Salat five times a day as against weekly prayers by Jews and Christians. Although we carry out the drill every day, but are we really praying for usually many thoughts plague our minds while we are praying and more often than not we lose concentration and aren't humble in our prayer.

Since we are talking to Allah, though we do not see Him, but we are certain sure that He is seeing us praying and listening to us. Therefore we must show the best of our humility so that we are listened to. Unless we empty our mind and concentrate solely on our prayer, we could not have been talking to Allah. In all humility, our sole focused attention and concentration should on talking to Allah. And at this time, no foul thinking should ingress our mind to take away our attention. So how do we achieve Khushoo " خشوع " ( humility  /  focused concentration ) when offering Salat?  Allah says ab

Let us understand what Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) says about Khushoo in the second verse of Surah 23. Al-Muminun:
قَدۡ اَفۡلَحَ الۡمُؤۡمِنُوۡنَۙ‏
(23:1) The believers have indeed attained true success
الَّذِيۡنَ هُمۡ فِىۡ صَلَاتِهِمۡ خَاشِعُوۡنَ ۙ‏
(23:2) those who, in their Prayers, humble themselves;
That is those believers who are humble in their prayers have attained true success for unless we show humility to our Creator in every walk of our life, specially the As Salat, how can our arrogance win us success.

Khashiun " " خَاشِعُوۡنَ " " in the text is from khushu " خشوع " (to bow down, to express humility) which is a condition of the heart as well as of the body. Khushu of the heart is to fear and stand in awe of a powerful person and khushu of the body is to bow his head and lower his gaze and voice in his presence. In Salat one is required to show khushu both of the heart and of the body, and this is the essence of the Prayer. It has been reported that when the Prophet (peace be upon him) once saw a person offering his Prayer as well as playing with his beard, he remarked: If he had khushu in his heart, his body would have manifested it.

Explaining the second verse, Ibn e Kathir notes that "(Khashi`un " خَاشِعُوۡنَ ") means those with fear and with tranquility.'' It was reported from `Ali bin Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, that Khushu` means the Khushu` of the heart. Al-Hasan Al-Basri said, "Their Khushu` was in their hearts.'' So they lowered their gaze and were humble towards others. Khushu` in prayer is only attained by the one who has emptied his heart totally, who does not pay attention to anything else besides it, and who prefers it above all else.

Yusuf Ali  puts it this way: Humility in prayer as regards (1) their estimate of their own worth in Allah's presence, (2) as regards their estimate of their own powers or strength unless they are helped by Allah, and (3) as regards the petitions they offer to Allah.

Qur'an Wiki explanation: “Who humble themselves in their prayer.” They feel the reverence associated with prayer, as they stand up to address God, and their hearts are thus filled with awe, which is, in turn, reflected in their features and movements. Their spirits feel God’s majesty as they realize that they stand in His presence. Thus, all their preoccupations and distractions disappear. Their thoughts and feelings are all concentrated on their discourse with Him. In His sublime presence, they are heedless of all their surroundings. They see and feel nothing but His majesty. Their minds and hearts are purged of even the slightest alien thought or feeling. In such a situation, a stray atom is reunited with its source, a wandering spirit finds its way, and a heart that has been long in isolation finds its company. Thus, all values, concerns and considerations diminish, except for the ones that are related to God in some way.

Please listen to an enlightening lecture by eminent Muslim scholar Nouman Ali Khan on how to develop Khushoo when offering salat:
About the scholar: Nouman Ali Khan, born to a Pakistani family, is an American Muslim speaker and Arabic instructor who founded the Bayyinah Institute for Arabic and Qur’anic Studies, after serving as an instructor of Arabic at Nassau Community College. He has been named one of the 500 most influential Muslims in the world by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre of Jordan.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us develop Khushoo and induce in us humility so that we offer our salat with complete focused concentration and be listened to. Ameen

How to Offer Salah (Prayers): Obligatory and Voluntary Rakats / Cycles / Units

Salah or prayer is the second pillar of Islam and has been made obligatory on all adult Muslims five times a day. It is thus better to understand how many rakats / cycles / unit each prayer has for better performance of one's obligations. Although, the commandment to offer five daily prayers has been given in the Holy Qur'an, the rakats / units / cycles were told by the Prophet of Allah himself and he also demonstrated how these are performed.

Salah is a physical, mental, and spiritual act of worship that is observed five times every day at prescribed times. When Muslims offer prayers, they must face Ka'abah located in Makkah, the Saudi city for uniformity of direction from all over the world.

The number of obligatory and voluntary rakats / units / cycles of five daily salah / prayer are as under:

Fajar The dawn prayer:
  • 2 rakats voluntary (Sunnah Moaqqada)
  • 2 rakat Obligatory (Fard)
Dhuhr - The midday or afternoon prayer:
  • 4 rakats voluntary (Sunnah Moaqqada)
  • 4 rakat Obligatory (Fard)
  • 2 rakat voluntary (Sunnah Moaqqada)
  • 2 rakat optional (Nafl)
Asr  - The late afternoon prayer
  • 4 rakats voluntary (Sunnah Non Moaqqada)
  • 4 rakat Obligatory (Fard)
Maghrib - Te dusk prayer
  • 3 rakat Obligatory (Fard)
  • 2 rakat voluntary (Sunnah Moaqqada)
  • 2 rakat optional (Nafl)
Isha - The night prayer
  • 4 rakats voluntary (Sunnah Non Moaqqada)
  • 4 rakat Obligatory (Fard)
  • 2 rakat voluntary (Sunnah Moaqqada)
  • 2 rakat optional (Nafl)
  • 3 rakat voluntary (Witr)
  • 2 rakat optional (Nafl)
However, we need to understand certain basic rules for offering salah / prayers:
  • Salah has been made obligatory for all adult Muslims.
  • The Obligatory rakats / cycles / units in each prayer are the actual cycles / rakats of salah. If these are offered, one will be rewarded for these are Fard / Obligatory. And if someone does not offer these, he will be questioned on the Day of Judgement for not fulfilling the commandment of Allah.
  • The fard / obligatory rakats are offered in the mosque behind the Imam in the form of congregation.
  • While offering fard / obligatory rakats in the mosque behind the Imam, the first two rakats of the Fajr, first two rakats of the Maghrib and first two rakats of Isha prayers are spoken aloud by the Imam. All four rakats of fard / obligatory prayers of Dhuhr and Asr are offered silently.
  • All other voluntary rakats are offered individually.
  • Other than the Obligatory prayers, all other rakats/cycles/units are voluntary. If one offers these, he will be rewarded. But if one does not offer these, he will not be asked
  • In the voluntary rakats, there are two types: Sunnah Moaqqada and Sunnah Non Moaqqada.
  • Sunnah Moaqqada are those voluntary rakats which the Prophet of Allah never skipped or missed. So these are known as Sunnah Moaqqada and normally it is stressed to offer these as respect to the Sunnah of the Prophet of Allah. Some even stress that these are as compulsory as Fard/Obligatory rakats.
  • Sunnah Non Moaqqada are those voluntary rakats which the Prophet of Allah sometimes offered or sometimes skipped. Some call these  as essential, if not compulsory.
  • The three rakats known as Witr are in fact the obligatory late night rakats for the Prophet of Allah which he offered after getting up late at night. Seeing the Prophet of Allah offering these three rakats, companions of the Prophet also started to offer these. However, some complained that they were unable to get up late night to offer these Witr rakats, to which the Prophet said that these can be offered after the Isha prayers. So normally these are offered after Isha prayer.
  • The optional Nafl rakats are additional rakats which Prophet too offered but never stressed over his companions.
In order to better understand these rakats and he obligatory / voluntary rakats, please listen to the following commentary by Professor Javed Ahmad Ghamidi, a Pakistani Muslim theologian, Quran scholar, Islamic modernist, exegete and educationist, on the subject. The video is in Urdu, but has English subtitles for those who cannot understand Urdu: :

May Allah bless us for any mistake that we may make in offering our salah and make us regular in offering at least our obligatory rakats in each prayer.
