A Small prayer yet Paradise the reward (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

Every word of Qur'an and Hadith / Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is full of blessings for the believers. If we start remembering small verses or prayers from Qur'an and Hadith, our blessing level will increase manifold. We share today a very small prayer attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ which if made in total sincerity, Paradise will be our due, as said by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

This Hadith is mentioned in Sunan Abi Dawud (Book # 43 General Behavior (Kitab Al-Adab) / كتاب الأدب / Chapter # 88 Stern warning regarding lying / باب فِي التَّشْدِيدِ فِي الْكَذِبِ ) as Hadith number # 4989, quoted herein under:

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri reported the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) as saying:

If anyone says "I am pleased with Allah as Lord, with Islam as religion and with Muhammad (ﷺ) as Apostle" Paradise will be his due.

Grade: Sahih (Al-Albani)

Arabic Text:

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رَافِعٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ، زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ شُرَيْحٍ الإِسْكَنْدَرَانِيُّ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو هَانِئٍ الْخَوْلاَنِيُّ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا عَلِيٍّ الْجَنْبِيَّ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيَّ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ "‏ مَنْ قَالَ رَضِيتُ بِاللَّهِ رَبًّا وَبِالإِسْلاَمِ دِينًا وَبِمُحَمَّدٍ رَسُولاً وَجَبَتْ لَهُ الْجَنَّةُ ‏"‏ ‏.‏

This small yet very powerful supplication is easy to remember and should be recited at least once a day. It would be better to recite it after every prayer to accrue its fathomless benefits and blessings. This is how Islam shows the believers ways to remember Allah and His revered Messenger ﷺ to rewards them not only in this world, but in the hereafter too when everyone will be looking for even the smallest amount of good, he had done in his worldly life to be blessed and forgiven.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Which three out of five daily prayers are more rewarding when offered in congregation

After taking Shahada and entering the fold of Islam, Salat (Prayer) is the most important pillar of Islam. During the day and night, offering Salat five times a day is obligatory on every adult Muslim. While one may offer prayer anywhere to one's convenience, offering Salat in a masjid in congregation behind the imam is extremely rewarding, for this allows Muslims to stand side by side to remember Allah. It also provides an opportunity for Muslims to get to know each other and their wellbeing.

Although all prayers in congregation have their status, yet the Fajr (pre-dawn), Dhur (midday, including the Jumu'ah prayer) and Isha (late night) prayer have their own rewards as mentioned by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

This Hadith is mentioned in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī  (Book 10 - Call to Prayers (Adhaan) كتاب الأذان / Chapter 9: To draw lots for pronouncing the Adhan باب الاِسْتِهَامِ فِي الأَذَانِ ) as Hadith 615, given herein under:

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا مَالِكٌ، عَنْ سُمَىٍّ، مَوْلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ "‏ لَوْ يَعْلَمُ النَّاسُ مَا فِي النِّدَاءِ وَالصَّفِّ الأَوَّلِ، ثُمَّ لَمْ يَجِدُوا إِلاَّ أَنْ يَسْتَهِمُوا عَلَيْهِ لاَسْتَهَمُوا، وَلَوْ يَعْلَمُونَ مَا فِي التَّهْجِيرِ لاَسْتَبَقُوا إِلَيْهِ، وَلَوْ يَعْلَمُونَ مَا فِي الْعَتَمَةِ وَالصُّبْحِ لأَتَوْهُمَا وَلَوْ حَبْوًا ‏"‏‏.‏

Narrated by Abu Huraira:

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "If the people knew the reward for pronouncing the Adhan and for standing in the first row (in congregational prayers) and found no other way to get that except by drawing lots they would draw lots, and if they knew the reward of the Zuhr prayer (in the early moments of its stated time) they would race for it (go early) and if they knew the reward of `Isha' and Fajr (morning) prayers in congregation, they would come to offer them even if they had to crawl."

Islam allows us to bag as much rewards in this world which will come handing in settling our scores on a higher scale on the Day of Judgement. Every single act of charity and prayer adds to our rewards. Why not top up our reward account by offering prayers in congregation in the masjids, specially the three mentioned above, which are more rewarding than the remaining two. Time is now to get benefitted from the opportunities provided to us. 

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. A prayer for new year 2023

The first sun of the new year 2023 is about to dawn and expected to bring in new hopes for the next twelve months and many years thereafter. We always have expectations and hopes, though many wither away due to our follies, incompetence and shallow faith in God. The year 2022 has not been well managed by us and looking back is not much too easy. We have had wars, continue to continue from the previous years and no end is foreseen in the new year 2023.

Millions are dying in hunger, while trillions are being spent to kill more and more soldiers and non-soldiers for God knows which national interest of big countries. If somehow, we could harness aggression and stop wars and money spent on wars is diverted to bring peace and feed countless hungry mouths, the world will be a heaven on earth.

Looking back, let us thank God first for the countless blessings He bestowed on us, though we did not deserve at all

Let us thank God for the mercy He has shown on us and not brought His wrath on us despite our follies

To continue into the new year 2023, it is my life's earnest desire and heartfelt invocation that:

May God bless us all

Bless our homes, our children, homes and countries from the clutches of the war mongers

May God bless us happiness, peace and love for each other

May God shield our evil desires, our sins and deceit for others

May God forgive all our past mistakes, sins and wrongdoings and pave way for a error less life

May God save us from being dishonoured and have mercy on us

May God realize our spoken and unspoken invocations and supplications

May all hungry mouths be well fed

May wars and chaos be turned into peace and tranquility

May all our difficulties and problems be eased 

May all those suffering from life threatening diseases be given new lives and be healthy again

May hate and deceit be erased from us

May God instill love in our hearts so that we love each other

May this world become a living heaven for the entire mankind

Let us carry the sweet things that happened to us in the past years

Let us carry these into our hearts and spread love all over in coming days

Let us love each other once again and let the man live in peace forever

Our Lord, grant us what is good in this world and what is good in the World to Come, and protect us from the chastisement of the Fire

Our Lord! We do indeed believe in you alone and no one else, so forgive us our sins and keep us safe from the chastisement of the Fire

Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and do not have mercy on us, we shall surely be among the losers

Our Lord! Grant us Your mercy and provide for us rectitude in our affairs

My Lord, verily we are vanquished; so, come to our aid

My Lord, all those who are reading these lines, please bless them all

My Lord, we have deviated from your path, please show us Your light

And direct us on to the Straight Way - Siraat e Mustaqeem

My Lord! Enable me and my offspring to establish Prayer, and do accept, our Lord, this prayer of mine

My Lord, dispose me that I may give thanks for the bounty that You have bestowed upon me and my parents, and dispose me that I may do righteous deeds that would please You, and also make my descendants righteous. I repent to You, and I am one of those who surrender themselves to You

Ameen

Believers!! Enjoin Prayer (As Salat) on your household

As Salat, the obligatory prayers five times a day, is the first important pillar of Islam after taking the Shahadah and entering into the fold of Islam. For it is As Salat that establishes a one-to-one communication between the Lord of the entire universe and His servants. Except for some laxities, As Salat is obligatory on every adult man and woman in Islam.

No other commandment in Qur'an is so oft repeated except the commandment to enforce As Salat. Importance of praying Salah on time can be understood by these hadith: "Abdullah asked the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) "Which deed is the dearest to Allah?" He replied, "To offer the prayers at their early stated fixed times." (Sahih al-Bukhari 527).

Thus, it is incumbent on every parent to enjoin As Salat on their children as has been commanded in the 132th verse of Surah 20. Ta Ha given below:

وَاۡمُرۡ اَهۡلَكَ بِالصَّلٰوةِ وَاصۡطَبِرۡ عَلَيۡهَا​ ؕ لَا نَسۡـئَلُكَ رِزۡقًا​ ؕ نَحۡنُ نَرۡزُقُكَ​ ؕ وَالۡعَاقِبَةُ لِلتَّقۡوٰى‏ 

(20:132) Enjoin Prayer on your household, and do keep observing it. We do not ask you for any worldly provision; rather, it is We Who provide you, and ultimately the pious will end up the best.

That is, "Teach your children also that lawful provision is much better than the unlawful riches of the wicked people. For this purpose, enjoin them to say their prescribed Prayers, for this will change their attitude, their standard of values, and make them contented with pure provisions and virtuous life in preference to the life of sin and luxury."

"We do not ask you to offer your Prayers for any benefit of Our own. We ask you to do that for your own good, because this will create piety in you which will bring about true success for you in this world and in the Hereafter."

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir: 

(And enjoin the Salah on your family, and be patient in offering them.) This means to save them from the punishment of Allah by the establishment of the prayer, and you also be patient in performing it. 

This is as Allah says, (O you who believe! Ward off yourselves and your families against a Fire (Hell).) [66:6] 

Ibn Abi Hatim recorded that Zayd bin Aslam reported from his father that he and Yarfa' would sometimes spend the night at `Umar bin Al-Khattab's. `Umar had a certain time of night that he would get up and pray. However, sometimes he would not get up for it. Then, we would say, "He is not going to get up like he usually does.' When he would awaken, he would make his family get up as well. He would say, (And enjoin the Salah on your family, and be patient in offering them.)'' 

Allah said; (We ask not of you a provision: We provide for you.) This means that if you establish the prayer, your sustenance will come to you from where you did not expect. This is as Allah says:

(And whosoever has Taqwa of Allah, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty). And He will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine.) [65:2-3]

Allah also says, (And I (Allah) created not the Jinn and mankind except that they should worship Me (Alone).) until, (Verily, Allah is the All-Provider, Owner of Power, the Most Strong.) [51:56-58] 

Thus, Allah says, (We ask not of you a provision: We provide for you.) 

Verily, At-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah recorded that Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of Allah said, (Allah, the Exalted, says, "O son of Adam, perform My worship and I will fill your chest with wealth and fulfill your needs. If you do not do so, then I will fill your chest with toil and I will not fulfill your needs.') It is also reported from Zayd bin Thabit that he heard the Messenger of Allah saying:

(Whoever makes worldly life his major concern, then Allah will scatter his situation for him (i.e. make it difficult) and his poverty will be placed between his eyes. He will not get from this world anything except that which has already been written for him. Whoever makes the Hereafter his intention, then his situation will be gathered for him (i.e. made easy) and his wealth will be placed in his heart. The worldly life will come to him anyway (in spite of his not seeking it).) 

Concerning Allah's statement, (وَالْعَـقِبَةُ لِلتَّقْوَى and the good end is for those who have Taqwa.) This means the good end to this life and in the Hereafter. In the Hereafter the good end will be Paradise for whoever feared Allah. 

Muhammad Asad Explanation:

(And bid thy people to pray, and persevere therein. [But remember:] We do not ask thee to provide sustenance [for Us] :) My interpolation of the words "for Us" is based on Razi’s interpretation of the above sentence: "God makes it clear that He has enjoined this [i.e., prayer] upon men for their own benefit alone, inasmuch as He Himself is sublimely exalted above any [need of] benefits." In other words, prayer must not be conceived as a kind of tribute to a "jealous God" - as the Old Testament, in its present corrupted form, frequently describes Him - but solely as a spiritual benefit for the person who prays.

(It is We who provide sustenance for thee. And the future belongs to the God-conscious.) Lit., "to God-consciousness".

Yusuf Ali Explanation:  

Sustenance, in the sense of the ordinary needs of life, the man of Allah does not worry about. That is provided by Allah for all, the just and the unjust. But the special provision, the Real Sustenance, the spiritual fruit, is for a righteous life in the service of Allah.

Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Explanation:

(Urge your people) The actual word is: اَهْلَكَ. It refers to all those people who until that time had accepted faith. The word اَهْل in Arabic has this vastness in it. Here the eloquence found in its usage is that the status of the poor and the needy is raised such that they have become members of the Prophet’s (sws) family.

(To the prayer and adhere to it yourself also. We do not ask for any sustenance from you [for them so that for it you may need to look at the means and resources of anyone].) The implication is that the Prophet (sws) should not think that if these people do not accept faith, then the message of God and the poor and needy who come forward to accept it will be left helpless in this land. He should not think along any of these lines. The Prophet (sws) does not require the help of these ingrates for his followers and for furthering his message. He has God with him and He is sufficient to help and strengthen him and his companions.  

(It is We Who shall provide sustenance to you.) Ie., to him and to those who will become his associates in his preaching mission. It is God’s responsibility to provide it to them and when He assigns some task to someone, He takes upon Himself the responsibility of providing for him. Hence the Prophet (sws) should do God’s work and be diligent in the prayer. The rest is God’s responsibility and he should leave it to Him and not be worried about it. If he is fulfilling his duty, then in the words of Jesus (sws), he deserves his remuneration.

([We require piety from you) Ie., piety both in knowledge and in deeds and also in the task God has assigned him.

Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:

We must not understand this verse as encouraging self-denial or disdain for the comforts of this life. It is rather an encouragement to hold on to true and lasting values, to maintain one’s ties with God and be contented. This is the best way to resist the temptation of the splendour and attractions of this life. When we maintain such values, we are free to rise above the lure of false temptations, splendid as they may appear. “Enjoin prayer on your people.” (Verse 132) The first duty of a Muslim is to make his home a Muslim home, enjoining his family to attend to their prayers so that they all maintain their ties with God. Thus, they are united in their approach to life. Life in a home where all members turn to God for worship is certainly a happy one. “And be diligent in its observance.” (Verse 132) Be diligent so that you offer your prayers completely and its effect becomes a reality. Prayer restrains man from loathsome deeds and indecency. This is its true effect. To attain the level where prayer provides such restraint requires diligence in its observance. Unless we reach the stage that our prayer yields this fruit, it remains a mere sequence of phrases and movements. Prayer and worship generally are duties assigned to the Prophet and believers. God does not gain anything by them. He is in need of no one: “We do not ask you for any provisions. It is We who provide for you.” (Verse 132) Worship nurtures God- consciousness within the worshipper. Hence, “the future belongs to the God-fearing.” (Verse 132) It is man who benefits by prayer, both in this life and in the life to come. He offers his worship to God and he enjoys, as a result, a state of contentment. He is comfortable and reassured. Furthermore, he ultimately receives a much greater reward in the hereafter. As for God, He needs nothing from anyone.

An effort has been made to gather explanation / exegesis of the surahs of the Qur'ān from authentic sources and then present a least possible condensed explanation of the surah. Prophetic Prayer While in Prostration (Sunnah Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

As Salat / Prayer is a one-to-one means of communication between a servant and his Lord. It is the time when a servant must invoke many blessings of his Lord and seek forgiveness for his past sins and misdeeds. Although prophets of God are above sins or misdeed for which they should be sorry for and seek forgiveness of their Lord, yet they would still supplicate for maybe they could have hurt someone unknowingly or said something that could have meant something different what actually means and could annoy someone.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ always supplicated for his blessing and blessing of the entire Ummah, whether alone or in company so that others too learn these supplications and often recite these for their forgiveness. The Hadith being shared today covers the same theme as mentioned in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (Book # 4 The book of prayers كتاب الإيمان / Chapter (What Is to Be Said While Bowing and Prostrating)) as Hadith number # 1084:

وَحَدَّثَنِى أَبُو الطَّاهِرِ وَيُونُسُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الأَعْلَى قَالاَ أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ أَخْبَرَنِى يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ عَنْ عُمَارَةَ بْنِ غَزِيَّةَ عَنْ سُمَىٍّ مَوْلَى أَبِى بَكْرٍ عَنْ أَبِى صَالِحٍ عَنْ أَبِى هُرَيْرَةَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- كَانَ يَقُولُ فِى سُجُودِهِ « اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِى ذَنْبِى كُلَّهُ دِقَّهُ وَجِلَّهُ وَأَوَّلَهُ وَآخِرَهُ وَعَلاَنِيَتَهُ وَسِرَّهُ ».

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that when he prostrated, the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) used to say: "Allahummaghfirli dhanbi kullahu diqqahu wa jillahu, wa awwalahu wa akhirahu, wa 'alaniyatahu wa sirrahu (O Allah, forgive me all my sins, great and small, first and last, open and secret.)"

A simple yet very well-meaning prayer which covers all kinds of sins one may have committed in his life. We may remember this supplication by heart and may recite while prostrating or even otherwise to be saved of the punishment of our committed sins.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.  

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

Verily I am Allah. So, establish Prayers to remember Me

As Salat (Prayer), the second pillar of Islam, assumes a great importance in the lives of the Muslims fro it established one to one communication between a servant and the Lord of the both worlds. Unless a Muslim offers five obligatory prayers every day, his faith in Allah can never be strong. 

We have posted many verses from Qur'an on importance of As Salat (You may refer to our previous posts on As Salt from our reference Page: As Salat and the second reference page on Compiled verses from Qur'an on specific subjects; As Salat). Herein under, we share the 14th verse of Surah 20 Ta Ha that spells out in very plain words what As Salat is, that is solely to remember Allah!!

اِنَّنِىۡۤ اَنَا اللّٰهُ لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّاۤ اَنَا فَاعۡبُدۡنِىۡ ۙ وَاَقِمِ الصَّلٰوةَ لِذِكۡرِىۡ‏ 

(20:14) Verily I am Allah. There is no god beside Me. So, serve Me and establish Prayers to remember Me.

This is the real object of Salat. It has been prescribed to remind people that they should not become neglectful of Allah by worldly diversions and that they should remember that man is not an unbridled free being but a servant of Allah. Salat has been prescribed five times a day to remind man of Allah's presence.

Some people are of the opinion that it means: "Establish Salat, so that I may remember you."

Incidentally, according to this verse, if one forgets to offer a prayer in time, one should offer it when one recollects it. This is also supported by a tradition related by Hadrat Anas: "If one forgets to offer a certain prayer at the proper time, he should offer it whenever he recollects this; for there is no other explanation for this omission." (Bukhari, Muslim, Ahmed). There is another tradition related by Abu Hurairah to the same effect. It was inquired from the Holy Prophet: "What should we do if we remained asleep during the time of prayer?" The Holy Prophet said, "There is no sin if one remains asleep. The sin is that one should neglect one's prayer intentionally while awake. Therefore, if one forgets to offer a prayer or remains asleep one should offer that prayer on remembering it or on awaking." (Tirmizi, Nasa'i, Abu Da'ud).

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir: 

(Verily, I am Allah! There is no God but Me,) This is the first obligation upon all responsible people of age, that they know that there is no God worthy of worship except Allah alone, who has no partners. 

Concerning Allah's statement, (so worship Me,) This means, "Single Me out alone for worship, and establish My worship without associating anything with Me.''

(and perform Salah for My remembrance.) It has been said that this means, "Pray in order to remember Me.' It has also been said that it means, "And establish the prayer whenever you remember Me.'' 

There is supporting evidence for this second statement in a Hadith recorded by Imam Ahmad from Anas, who said that the Messenger of Allah said, (Whenever one of you sleeps past the prayer, or he forgets to pray, then let him pray when he remembers it. For verily, Allah said, (And perform Salah for My remembrance.)) In the Two Sahihs it is reported from Anas that the Messenger of Allah said, (Whoever slept past the prayer, or forgot it, then his expiation is that he prays it when he remembers it. There is no explanation for it other than that.) 

Muhammad Asad Explanation:

Thus, conscious remembrance of God and of His oneness and uniqueness is declared to be the innermost purpose, as well as the intellectual justification of all true prayer.

Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Explanation:

This is the first teaching lesson given to every prophet because the whole religion is based on this belief.

After belief in monotheism, this is the first directive of religion: when there is no deity except God, only He should be worshipped. About worship, I have explained at various instances in this book that the essence of worship (‘ibādah) is humility and servility. The first manifestation of this essence is serving the Almighty. Since a person also has a practical life in this world, this servitude relates to this practical life as well and in this manner becomes inclusive of obedience. The manifestations in the first case are glorifying Him and singing His praises, praying to him and supplicating before Him, kneeling and prostrating before Him, making vows (to please Him), offering animal sacrifice and doing i‘tikāf. In the second case, a person, after regarding someone as an independent law giver and ruler, considers that he has the authority to give directives of what is forbidden and what is not and what is allowed and what is not and submits before all his directives. It is the verdict of God Almighty that none of the above-mentioned things can be reserved for someone other than Him.

The status monotheism occupies in beliefs is exactly the same as the prayer occupies in deeds. It is evident from the Qur’ān that the prayer is the foremost consequence of the comprehension of God which one gets after being reminded by His revelations and, as a result of this comprehension, of the emotions of love and gratitude that appear for the Almighty in a person or should appear in him.

Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:

This brief revelation sums up three crucial aspects of the divine faith: belief in God’s oneness, addressing all worship to Him alone, and belief in the Last Hour. These are the foundation of God’s message that remained the same throughout human history.

God’s oneness is the cornerstone of faith. In His address to Moses, God emphasizes it in different forms: first in a statement bearing a strong emphasis, “Indeed, I alone am God.” (Verse 14) Then Godhead is clearly stated as applicable to no one else: “There is no deity other than Me.” (Verse 14) When Godhead is thus established, worship follows. Worship means that every activity should aim to please God. Singled out among all human activity is prayer: “Establish regular prayer to celebrate My praise.” (Verse 14) Prayer is the most complete and perfect of all types of worship celebrating God’s praise. In fact, its sole purpose is such. It discards everything else. Thus, in prayer we are prepared for contact with God.

Between a slave of Allah and disbelief is abandoning the Salat (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

Prayer (As Salat) is the second pillar of Islam, the first being Shahada to enter the fold of Islam. There are countless verses in Qur'an which caution the Muslims to guard their Obligatory prayers five times a day. The As Salat takes so much of importance that even during travel and war, one is not absolved of this obligation.  

One of the many verses from Qur'an on importance of Salat (and charity) is the 31st verse of Surah 14. Ibraheem (Abrham) as under:

قُلْ لِّـعِبَادِىَ الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا يُقِيۡمُوا الصَّلٰوةَ وَيُنۡفِقُوۡا مِمَّا رَزَقۡنٰهُمۡ سِرًّا وَّعَلَانِيَةً مِّنۡ قَبۡلِ اَنۡ يَّاۡتِىَ يَوۡمٌ لَّا بَيۡعٌ فِيۡهِ وَلَا خِلٰلٌ‏ 

(14:31) (O Prophet), tell those of My servants who believe that they should establish Prayer and spend out of what We have provided them with, both secretly and openly, before there arrives the Day when there will be no bargaining, nor any mutual befriending.

Likewise, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ had always stressed on his companions to establish and guard their prayers, lest their faith becomes questionable for offering Salat is obligatory and there is no exception to it, except if someone is not adult or is lunatic. 

Today we share a Hadith as mentioned in Jami` at-Tirmidhi as Hadith: 2620

حَدَّثَنَا هَنَّادٌ، حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ "‏ بَيْنَ الْعَبْدِ وَبَيْنَ الْكُفْرِ تَرْكُ الصَّلاَةِ ‏"‏‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ وَأَبُو الزُّبَيْرِ اسْمُهُ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمِ بْنِ تَدْرُسَ ‏.‏

Narrated Jabir: that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Between a slave of Allah and disbelief is abandoning the Salat."

In another it is mentioned that Abdullah asked the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) "Which deed is the dearest to Allah?" He replied, "To offer the prayers at their early stated fixed times." (Sahih al-Bukhari 527)

Since As Salat is an obligation and mandatory act of worship, it can never be abandoned or avoided. That is why it is said that the difference between faith in Allah and disbelief is the abandonment of As Salat. It has become a routine for many to leave this mandatory worship on one pretext or the other and cause cracks in their faith. Let us make a concerted effort to guard our mandatory prayers and be not the ones whose faith becomes to waver.

The Divine Command to establish Prayer and Charity

Qur'an lays excessive importance to As Salat (Prayer) and Charity (both obligatory and voluntary) for prayers establish a one-to-one communication of man with Allah without any need for an intermediary and charity allows help to those who have been given less than the others. There are numerous Ayats in Qur'an where both As Salat and Zakat come together, thus the importance of these acts for a believer.

Today we share the 31st verse of Surah 14. Ibraheem (Abrham) based on the same theme:

قُلْ لِّـعِبَادِىَ الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا يُقِيۡمُوا الصَّلٰوةَ وَيُنۡفِقُوۡا مِمَّا رَزَقۡنٰهُمۡ سِرًّا وَّعَلَانِيَةً مِّنۡ قَبۡلِ اَنۡ يَّاۡتِىَ يَوۡمٌ لَّا بَيۡعٌ فِيۡهِ وَلَا خِلٰلٌ‏ 

(14:31) (O Prophet), tell those of My servants who believe that they should establish Prayer and spend out of what We have provided them with, both secretly and openly, before there arrives the Day when there will be no bargaining, nor any mutual befriending.

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir: 

Allah orders His servants to obey Him, fulfill His rights and be kind to His creatures. He ordained the prayer, which affirms the worship of Allah alone, without partners, and to spend from the provisions that He has granted them, by paying the due Zakah, spending on relatives and being kind to all others. Establishing the prayer requires performing it on time, perfectly, preserving its act of bowing having humility during it, and preserving its prostrations. Allah has ordained spending from what He granted, in secret and public, so that the people save themselves:

(Before the coming of a Day), the Day of Resurrection, (on which there will be neither mutual bargaining nor befriending.) on which no ransom will be accepted from anyone, if he seeks to buy himself. 

Allah said in another Ayah, (So this Day no ransom shall be taken from you, nor of those who disbelieved.) [57:15] 

Allah said here, (nor befriending.) Ibn Jarir commented, "Allah says that on that Day, there will be no friendship between friends that might save those deserving punishment from it. Rather, on that Day, there will be fairness and justice.' Qatadah said, "Allah knows that in this life, there is mutual bargaining and there are friendships which people benefit from. A man chooses his friends and the reasons behind befriending them; if it was for Allah's sake, their friendship should be maintained, but if it was for other than Allah, their friendship is bound to be cutoff.'' I say that the meaning of this, is that Allah the Exalted is declaring that on that Day, no mutual bargaining or ransom will avail anyone, even if he ransoms himself with the earth's fill of gold if he could find that amount! No friendship or intercession shall avail one if he meets Allah while a disbeliever. 

Allah the Exalted also said:

 (And fear the Day when no person shall avail another, nor shall compensation be accepted from him, nor shall intercession be of use to him, nor shall they be helped.) [2:123] and,

O you believe! Spend of that with which We have provided for you, before a Day comes when there will be no bargaining, nor friendship, nor intercession. And it is the disbelievers who are the wrongdoers.) [2:254]

Yusuf Ali Explanation:

Putting ourselves back in the position in which the Muslim community found themselves in Makkah just before the Hijrat, we can imagine how much encouragement and consolation they needed from the preaching, the Faith, and the steadfast character of Al-Mustafa. Intolerant persecution was the order of the day; neither the life nor the property or reputation of the Muslims was safe. They are asked to find strength and tranquility in prayer and in helping each other according to their needs and resources.

Here, as elsewhere, "Sustenance" is to be taken in the literal as well as the metaphorical sense. There were many among the Muslims who were poor, or slaves, or depressed, because they were deprived of the means of livelihood on account of their Faith. They were to be fed, clothed, and sheltered, by those who had means. Charity was to be ordinarily secret, so as to cut out all show or parade, and perhaps also lest the enemy should dry up those sources by unprincipled violence; but there must be much that had to be open and organized, so that all the needy could know where to go to be relieved.

The great Day of Reckoning would be one on which all values would be changed. Wealth, as understood in this world, would no longer count. Should we not therefore use any wealth we have in this life, to give here and receive there? Bai includes all bargaining, -barter, purchase and sale, etc. In this world, where wealth has some value, let us spend it and get for ourselves "treasures in heaven." In the next life each man will stand on his merits and personal responsibility. One man cannot help another. Let us here help each other to become true and righteous, so that our personal account may be favourable there.

Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:

In this verse, the Prophet ﷺ is asked to address God’s servants who have accepted the faith. These are the people who will take heed when they are warned against evil. They accept God’s blessings and appreciate them, and will never exchange them for disbelief. The Prophet is to address these people and teach them how to be grateful for God’s blessings. They should express their gratitude through worship, obedience to God and kindness to His servants.

God commands His Messenger to say to those who have attained to faith that they should express their gratitude to God by establishing regular prayer, for prayer is the most express form of gratitude to God. They should also spend in charity out of the sustenance God provides for them, and make such spending both in secret and in public. Secret charity protects the dignity of the taker and enhances the virtue of the giver. This ensures that charity does not become a source of pride and arrogance. Charitable spending in public serves to demonstrate obedience to God’s orders, and provides a good example to others in the community. Both ways are left to the discretion and sensitivities of every believer.

The believers are told to spend on others now so that their balance which is preserved for them increases through gains they make by charitable spending. This they have to do before a day comes when there is no longer any possibility for wealth to grow, or friendship to bring any benefit. What is of benefit to people is only the good works they have already done, for their reward is stored.

May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Note: When we mention God in our posts, we mean One True God, we call Allah in Islam, with no associates. Allah is the Sole Creator of all things, and that Allah is all-powerful and all-knowing. Allah has no offspring, no race, no gender, no body, and is unaffected by the characteristics of human life.

An effort has been made to gather explanation / exegesis of the surahs of the Qur'ān from authentic sources and then present a least possible condensed explanation of the surah. In that the exegesis of the chapters of the Quran is mainly based on the "Tafhim al-Qur'an - The Meaning of the Qur'an" by one of the most enlightened scholars of the Muslim World Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi.
