Supplications of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ before going to bed and after getting up

Sleep is a state of reduced mental and physical activity in which consciousness is altered and sensory activity is inhibited to a certain extent. During sleep, there is a decrease in muscle activity, and interactions with the surrounding environment. 

That is in a quiet environment, in which a man is not disturbed to break his sleep, remains cut off from the world and then gets up in the morning, thinking it is was just a few minutes before that he had dozed off. But do you know that most deaths occur during the nighttime while one is asleep? As per study, about 1 in 8 people who die from heart disease will die in their sleep. Similarly, 25% of strokes occur during sleep. If one has obstructive sleep apnea, he may be at higher risk of dying in your sleep.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was cognizant of this fact and would make a special supplication before going to bed for no one knows whether he would get up from his sleep or not. Similarly, the revered Prophet ﷺ would immediately thank Allah for giving him another day to live.

This Hadith is mentioned in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī  (Book 80 - Invocations /  كتاب الأدب / Chapter 16: What to say when one gets up in the morning /  باب مَا يَقُولُ إِذَا أَصْبَحَ) as Hadith 6324, given herein under:

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ، عَنْ رِبْعِيِّ بْنِ حِرَاشٍ، عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ، قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم إِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَنَامَ قَالَ ‏"‏ بِاسْمِكَ اللَّهُمَّ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا ‏"‏‏.‏ وَإِذَا اسْتَيْقَظَ مِنْ مَنَامِهِ قَالَ ‏"‏ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا، وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ ‏"‏‏.

Narrated by Hudhaifa:

• Whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) intended to go to bed, he would recite: "Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya (With Your name, O Allah, I die and I live). [ بِاسْمِكَ اللَّهُمَّ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا ]" 
• And when he woke up from his sleep, he would say: "Al-hamdu lil-lahil-ladhi ahyana ba'da ma amatana; wa ilaihi an-nushur (All the Praises are for Allah Who has made us alive after He made us die (sleep) and unto Him is the Resurrection). [الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا، وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ]"

So, my brothers and sisters in Islam, make it a habit to make the above-mentioned supplications before going to bed and upon getting up, so that we remain in Divine protection. And if our final hour is during the night, let us have taken the name of Allah for whether we die or live again. And also, do not forget to thank Allah for raising us alive from our sleep and giving us another day to live.‏

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Prophetic Supplication (attributed to Prophet Abraham) for protection against Evil and Envious Eye

Evil surrounds us in many forms to harm us or to mislead us and take us to paths that plunge us into depths of its machinations. We should therefore be on the lookout for anything that apparently looks attractive yet shrouded in evil. 

The main theme of the last two ending chapters / Surahs of Qur'an is also protection against evil, both within and without. Read our earlier post on Striking resemblance between Surahs Al Falaq and An Naas.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ too has supplicated for protection against evil in its many forms as mentioned in one of Hadiths as mentioned in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī  (Book 60 - Prophets كتاب أحاديث الأنبياء / Chapter 10) as Hadith 3371, given herein under:

حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ، عَنِ الْمِنْهَالِ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم يُعَوِّذُ الْحَسَنَ وَالْحُسَيْنَ وَيَقُولُ ‏ "‏ إِنَّ أَبَاكُمَا كَانَ يُعَوِّذُ بِهَا إِسْمَاعِيلَ وَإِسْحَاقَ،

  أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّةِ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ وَهَامَّةٍ، وَمِنْ كُلِّ عَيْنٍ لاَمَّةٍ ‏"‏‏.‏

Narrated Ibn `Abbas: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to seek Refuge with Allah for Al-Hasan and Al-Husain and say: "Your forefather (i.e. Abraham) used to seek Refuge with Allah for Ishmael and Isaac by reciting the following: 'O Allah! I seek Refuge with Your Perfect Words from every devil and from poisonous pests and from every evil, harmful, envious eye.' "

No matter how faithful believers may be and fearful of Allah, yet we cannot escape evil, for evil targets believers more in faith so as to derail them from the true path. Let us keep reciting the above quoted supplication much too often, especially for our children, so that they do not fall into the trap of evil and are harmed. 

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. Prophetic Supplication when leaving the house

Islam is nothing but always seeking love and protection of Allah. And for this reason, there are numerous supplications both in Qur'an and in the Hadiths of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. In fact, for every feat or task that a believer intends to undertake, he must invoke the fathomless blessings of Allah so that the will of Allah is included in his intentions and feats he is about to undertake. However, the will and protection of Allah can only be sought if the intentions are pure, noble and not aimed at harming another human being.

In continuing with many Prophetic Supplications, we have already shared, we add another important supplication which must be made when one is leaving one's house so that his house in his absence remains protected and safe from all evils. This supplication is mentioned in Sunan Abi Dawud (Book # General Behavior (Kitab Al-Adab) كتاب الأدب/ Chapter # 112 What to say when leaving one's home باب مَا يَقُولُ الرَّجُلُ إِذَا خَرَجَ مِنْ بَيْتِهِ ) as Hadith number # 5095 as under:

حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْخَثْعَمِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، عَنْ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏"‏ إِذَا خَرَجَ الرَّجُلُ مِنْ بَيْتِهِ فَقَالَ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ لاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللَّهِ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏"‏ يُقَالُ حِينَئِذٍ هُدِيتَ وَكُفِيتَ وَوُقِيتَ فَتَتَنَحَّى لَهُ الشَّيَاطِينُ فَيَقُولُ لَهُ شَيْطَانٌ آخَرُ كَيْفَ لَكَ بِرَجُلٍ قَدْ هُدِيَ وَكُفِيَ وَوُقِيَ ‏"‏ ‏.‏

Narrated by Anas ibn Malik:  The Prophet (ﷺ) said: When a man goes out of his house and says: "In the name of Allah, I trust in Allah; there is no might and no power but in Allah," the following will be said to him at that time: "You are guided, defended and protected." The devils will go far from him and another devil will say: How can you deal with a man who has been guided, defended and protected?

Grade: Sahih (Al-Albani)

As can be seen from the above said supplication, when a believer makes this supplication, Allah responds by saying: "You are guided, defended and protected." And when Divine protection is sought, how can Devil and his aids harm the one who is seeking Divine protection? And the devils will go far from him and another devil will say: How can you deal with a man who has been guided, defended and protected?

Prophetic Supplication: What to say when waking up

The life of a Muslim is nothing but worship of Allah and seeking forgiveness at all the times for one never knows how long one has to live - may be one never sees the second for the angel of death may appear unannounced giving no time to say one's final supplications. Likewise, when one goes to sleep, he is not sure whether he would wake up alive in the morning or not, because many deaths occur during the night. 

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ had always asked his companions to be thankful to Allah when going to sleep and when waking up in the morning. We share a Hadith attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ which is to prayed when waking up in the morning, or even at other times. This should also be prayed at night before going to sleep as well. 

This Hadith is mentioned in Sunan Abi Dawud (Book # 43 General Behavior (Kitab Al-Adab) كتاب الأدب / Chapter # 110 What to say when waking up باب مَا يَقُولُ إِذَا أَصْبَحَ ) as Hadith number # 5077, given herein under:

حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ، وَوُهَيْبٌ، نَحْوَهُ عَنْ سُهَيْلٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عَائِشٍ، - وَقَالَ حَمَّادٌ عَنْ أَبِي عَيَّاشٍ، - أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏"‏ مَنْ قَالَ إِذَا أَصْبَحَ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَىْءٍ قَدِيرٌ كَانَ لَهُ عِدْلُ رَقَبَةٍ مِنْ وَلَدِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ وَكُتِبَ لَهُ عَشْرُ حَسَنَاتٍ وَحُطَّ عَنْهُ عَشْرُ سَيِّئَاتٍ وَرُفِعَ لَهُ عَشْرُ دَرَجَاتٍ وَكَانَ فِي حِرْزٍ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ حَتَّى يُمْسِيَ وَإِنْ قَالَهَا إِذَا أَمْسَى كَانَ لَهُ مِثْلُ ذَلِكَ حَتَّى يُصْبِحَ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ فِي حَدِيثِ حَمَّادٍ فَرَأَى رَجُلٌ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فِيمَا يَرَى النَّائِمُ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ أَبَا عَيَّاشٍ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْكَ بِكَذَا وَكَذَا قَالَ ‏"‏ صَدَقَ أَبُو عَيَّاشٍ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ رَوَاهُ إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ وَمُوسَى الزَّمْعِيُّ وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ عَنْ سُهَيْلٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ عَائِشٍ ‏.‏

Narrated AbuAyyash:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: If anyone says in the morning: "There is no god but Allah alone Who has no partner; to Him belong the dominions, to Him praise is due, and He is Omnipotent," he will have a reward equivalent to that for setting free a slave from among the descendants of Isma'il. He will have ten good deeds recorded for him, ten evil deeds deducted from him, he will be advanced ten degrees, and will be guarded from the Devil till the evening. If he says them in the evening, he will have a similar recompense till the morning.

Grade: Sahih (Al-Albani) 

Imagine the power this Dua embodies in itself that by just thanking Allah when waking up and praying the dua mentioned above, how much blessings one bags in, that is:

• Reward equivalent to that for setting free a slave from among the descendants of Isma'il. 
• He will have ten good deeds recorded for him, 
• Ten evil deeds deducted from him, 
• He will be advanced ten degrees, 
• And will be guarded from the Devil till the evening. 
• If he says them in the evening, he will have a similar recompense till the morning.

Let us then not deprive us of the bounties of Allah by thanking Him saying: لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَىْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

Prophetic Supplication for Night of Al Qadr

The month of Ramadan brings countless blessings for the believers who fast during the month only to please Allah, for Allah has promised that the reward of fasting is something that is between Him and His servant. And certainly, every fasting believer should expect a special reward for him for the love of his Creator, imposes upon himself strict restrictions and stays away from everything which is otherwise Halal / permissible to him. 

However, the rewards and blessings are multiplied manifold during the last ten days of Ramadan for in it falls a night which better than a thousand months - the Night of Qadr. We have already shared the importance of this night in our earlier posts (link given below). Today we share a special supplication which Prophet Muhammad ﷺ recommended to be recited during the last ten days of the sacred month.

This Hadith is mentioned Jami` at-Tirmidhi  (Book # 48 Chapters on Supplication كتاب الدعوات عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم / Chapter # 84 Concerning "The Virtue of Asking for Al-Afiyah and Al-Mu’afah")s Hadith number # 3513:

حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ الضُّبَعِيُّ، عَنْ كَهْمَسِ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ عَلِمْتُ أَىُّ لَيْلَةٍ لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ مَا أَقُولُ فِيهَا قَالَ ‏ "‏ قُولِي اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ كَرِيمٌ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي ‏"‏‏.‏ قَالَ هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ ‏.‏

Narrated by Aishah:

“I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, what is your view if I know when the Night of Al-Qadr is, then what should I say in it?” He said: ‘Say: “O Allah, indeed You are Pardoning, [Generous,] You love pardon, so pardon me (Allāhumma innaka `Afuwwun [Karīmun], tuḥibbul-`afwa fa`fu `annī).’”

It is a small yet very powerful Dua which can be easily remembered and recited. Let us my brothers and sisters of Islam stay awake during the odd nights of the last days of the Ramadan and recite the above quoted supplication as much as we can, for who know our supplication coincides with the blessed hour on the night of Al Qadr and we are rewarded profusely by our Lord.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Comprehensive Prophetic Supplication (attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

We have been sharing supplications both from Qur'an as well as Hadiths of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Each supplication is well worded for these have been taken verbatim from the words of Allah as well as Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Continuing with our series of Prophetic Supplications, we share today a comprehensive supplication which has been narrated by Hadart 'Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her.

This supplication has been mentioned in Sunan Ibn Majah (The Book of Supplication كتاب الدعاء / Chapter # 4 Comprehensive Supplications باب الْجَوَامِعِ مِنَ الدُّعَاءِ ) as Hadith number # 3846, shared herein under:

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، أَخْبَرَنِي جَبْرُ بْنُ حَبِيبٍ، عَنْ أُمِّ كُلْثُومٍ بِنْتِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ عَلَّمَهَا هَذَا الدُّعَاءَ

 ‏ "‏ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنَ الْخَيْرِ كُلِّهِ عَاجِلِهِ وَآجِلِهِ مَا عَلِمْتُ مِنْهُ وَمَا لَمْ أَعْلَمْ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الشَّرِّ كُلِّهِ عَاجِلِهِ وَآجِلِهِ مَا عَلِمْتُ مِنْهُ وَمَا لَمْ أَعْلَمْ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ خَيْرِ مَا سَأَلَكَ عَبْدُكَ وَنَبِيُّكَ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا عَاذَ بِهِ عَبْدُكَ وَنَبِيُّكَ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْجَنَّةَ وَمَا قَرَّبَ إِلَيْهَا مِنْ قَوْلٍ أَوْ عَمَلٍ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ النَّارِ وَمَا قَرَّبَ إِلَيْهَا مِنْ قَوْلٍ أَوْ عَمَلٍ وَأَسْأَلُكَ أَنْ تَجْعَلَ كُلَّ قَضَاءٍ قَضَيْتَهُ لِي خَيْرًا ‏"‏‏.

(Romanized: "Allahumma inni as'aluka minal-khayri kullihi, 'ajilihi wa ajilihi, ma 'alimtu minhu wa ma la a'lam. Wa a'udhu bika minash-sharri kullihi, 'ajilihi wa ajilihi, ma 'alimtu minhu wa ma la a'lam. Allahumma inni as'aluka min khayri ma sa'alaka 'abduka wa nabiyyuka, wa a'udhu bika min sharri ma 'adha bihi 'abduka wa nabiyyuka. Allahumma inni as'alukal-jannatah wa ma qarrab ilayha min qawlin aw 'amalin, wa a'udhu bika minan-nari wa ma qarraba ilayha min qawlin aw 'amalin, wa as'aluka an taj'al kulla qada'in qadaytahuli khayran)

It was narrated from 'Aishah that: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) taught her this supplication:

"(O Allah, I ask You for all that is good, in this world and in the Hereafter, what I know and what I do not know. O Allah, I seek refuge with You from all evil, in this world and in the Hereafter, what I know and what I do not know. O Allah, I ask You for the good that Your slave and Prophet has asked You for, and I seek refuge with You from the evil from which Your slave and Prophet sought refuge. O Allah, I ask You for Paradise and for that which brings one closer to it, in word and deed, and I seek refuge in You from Hell and from that which brings one closer to it, in word and deed. And I ask You to make every decree that You decree concerning me good)."‏

Grade: Sahih (Darussalam)

The above quoted supplication should be recited much too often as on one hand it seeks refuge from evil and hell, while on the other hand it asks for Paradise. 

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. Prophetic Supplication (Attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) for Forgiveness of sins

Sins have many faces: Hidden, open, obscured, intentional and unintentional. Man being so fragile in controlling his emotions, falls prey to the evil and commits sins of varying degrees. And once he has passed the stage, the good in him compels him to repent. If his consciousness is still alive, he will immediately prostrate in front of his Lord, repent his sin and seek forgiveness, for seeking forgiveness is the best tool Allah has provided to the believers so that their acts otherwise unbecoming may be forgiven.

There are many a supplication attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ wherein he has provided us the best of the well worded supplications should we faulter. Even otherwise, we should be seeking forgiveness from our Lord for one may never know has he hurt someone unknowingly.

This Hadith is quoted in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (The Book (#4) of Prayers كتاب الصلاة  / Chapter # 42 What Is To be Said While Bowing and Prostrating / باب باب مَا يُقَالُ فِي الرُّكُوعِ وَالسُّجُودِ ‏) as Hadith number # 483 appended as under:

وَحَدَّثَنِي أَبُو الطَّاهِرِ، وَيُونُسُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الأَعْلَى، قَالاَ أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ عُمَارَةَ بْنِ غَزِيَّةَ، عَنْ سُمَىٍّ، مَوْلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ يَقُولُ فِي سُجُودِهِ

 ‏ "‏ اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي ذَنْبِي كُلَّهُ دِقَّهُ وَجِلَّهُ وَأَوَّلَهُ وَآخِرَهُ وَعَلاَنِيَتَهُ وَسِرَّهُ ‏"‏‏.‏

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to say while prostrating himself: O Lord, forgive me all my sins, small and great, first and last, open and secret.

To my mind, though very short, this is one of the best worded supplications that comprehensively covers all kinds of sins and one must find time every day to use this supplication so that he may be forgiven.

Prophetic Supplication (attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) to invoke the very Mercy of Allah

Man has always been the focus of the evil and is so fragile that more often than not, he succumbs to the temptations of the evil. But when the act of evil is over, one is left morose and extremely lamenting at one's fouling. For such believers, Allah has never closed His doors of forgiveness, provided the sinner or the wrongdoers sincerely repent their action and seek Divine forgiveness.

We share a hadith attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ today in which a meaningful invocation is mentioned to move Allah's countless blessings and seeking forgiveness. This Hadith is mentioned in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī (Book 10 - Call to Prayers (Adhaan) كتاب الأذان / Chapter (149): Invocation before the Taslim باب الدُّعَاءِ قَبْلَ السَّلاَمِ) as Hadith 834, given herein under:

حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الْخَيْرِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقِ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ‏.‏ أَنَّهُ قَالَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم عَلِّمْنِي دُعَاءً أَدْعُو بِهِ فِي صَلاَتِي‏.‏ قَالَ ‏ "‏ قُلِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي ظُلْمًا كَثِيرًا وَلاَ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ، فَاغْفِرْ لِي مَغْفِرَةً مِنْ عِنْدِكَ، وَارْحَمْنِي إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ ‏"‏‏.‏

Narrated by Abu Bakr As-Siddiq:

I asked Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) to teach me an invocation so that I may invoke Allah with it in my prayer. He told me to say, "Allahumma inni zalumtu nafsi zulman kathiran, Wala yaghfiru dh-dhunuba illa anta, fa ghfir li maghfiratan min `indika, wa r-hamni, innaka anta l-ghafuru r-rahim (O Allah! I have done great injustice to myself and none except You forgives sins, so bestow on me a forgiveness from You, and Have Mercy on me, You are the Forgiver, the Merciful).

Let us first of all try our best not to fall prey to evil, for temptations to sin are always very lucrative. But if God forbids one does fall under the evil influence, one must immediately repent and seek Allah's forgiveness. Rest assured Allah is oft forgiving and extremely merciful.

Supplication of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ seeking Refuge from Evil and Evil Desires

Since the day Adam fell prey to the Satanic machination and disobeyed his Lord, the tug of war between good and evil continues. The pushes and pulls get weaker in favour of righteousness and since the luring in by evil forces is more lucrative. Even the very pious are afraid of falling prey to evil forces and have always been supplicating for seeking refuge from them.

Although prophets are Divinely shielded from Satan and its machination, yet they have always been invoking the blessing of Divine protection from the menace of evil. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ too has been seeking protection from evil.

A supplication of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has been mentioned in Jami` at-Tirmidhi  (Book # 48 Chapters on Supplication كتاب الدعوات عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم / Chapter # 126 The Supplication of Umm Salamah باب دُعَاءِ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ ) as Hadith number # 3591 wherein he is been reported have made a supplication to seek refuge from evil as appended below: 

حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ وَكِيعٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ بَشِيرٍ، وَأَبُو أُسَامَةَ عَنْ مِسْعَرٍ، عَنْ زِيَادِ بْنِ عِلاَقَةَ، عَنْ عَمِّهِ، قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ ‏ "‏ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ مُنْكَرَاتِ الأَخْلاَقِ وَالأَعْمَالِ وَالأَهْوَاءِ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ ‏.‏ وَعَمُّ زِيَادِ بْنِ عِلاَقَةَ هُوَ قُطْبَةُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ صَاحِبُ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏

Ziyad bin `Ilaqah narrated from his uncle, that he said: “[The Prophet (ﷺ)] used to say: ‘O Allah, I seek refuge in You from evil character, evil actions, and evil desires (Allāhumma innī a`ūdhu bika min munkarātil-akhlāqi wal-a`māli wal-ahwā’).’”

Special supplication for Reverts after embracing Islam (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

Embracing Islam is one of the most blessed things that can ever happen to a man. Certainly, leaving one's faith of birth and taking the Ultimate Decision to enter the fold of Islam is one of the most difficult, yet most rewarding decision that unfolds a life full of blessings of Allah. This Hadith is quoted in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (The Book (#48) Pertaining to the Remembrance of Allah, Supplication, Repentance and Seeking Forgiveness - كتاب الذكر والدعاء والتوبة والاستغفار   / Chapter # 10 The Virtue of Tahlil (Saying La Ilaha Ill-Allah), Tasbih (Saying Subhan Allah) And (Du'a) Supplication / باب فَضْلِ التَّهْلِيلِ وَالتَّسْبِيحِ وَالدُّعَاءِ ‏‏ ) as Hadith number # 2697a:

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كَامِلٍ الْجَحْدَرِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَاحِدِ، - يَعْنِي ابْنَ زِيَادٍ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مَالِكٍ الأَشْجَعِيُّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يُعَلِّمُ مَنْ أَسْلَمَ يَقُولُ ‏ "‏ اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَارْحَمْنِي وَاهْدِنِي وَارْزُقْنِي ‏"‏‏.‏

 

Abu Malik Ashaja'i reported on the authority of his father that whenever a person embraced Islam, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) instructed him to recite: " O Allah, grant me pardon, have mercy upon me, direct me to the path of righteousness and provide me sustenance."

Since one's life before embracing Islam was a life lived in the darkness and without any direction, one should thank Allah and beseech Him to forgive his past life and shower upon him His mercy and keep him on the righteous path forever. From now on, one must sustain oneself on Halal means of sustenance and abstain from the lewdness of the past life.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also on another occasion recommended this supplication to a person who had come to the Prophet of Allah and asked him how should he beg his Lord in appropriate words so that his supplication is heard and responded to.

Just ponder over each of the four things mentioned in the supplication: One must begin by confessing his sins and pleading for pardon, and then asking for continued mercy of Allah Almighty. He should then seek protection from all the evils that surround him so that he is not deterred from walking on Sirat e Mustaqeem. And then in the last comes request for means of sustenance. This simple yet very powerful supplication provides us with a format as to plead to our Lord and ask for His countless favours on us.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

Prophetic Supplication which was dearer to him than anything over which the sun rises

Allah, the Lord of the Universe, listens to us provided we address Him with attributes befitting His Greatness and Magnanimity. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ always advised his companions that while making a supplication, they must first acknowledge Allah's greatness and his many attributes. 

We share a Prophetic Supplication, which dearer to him, as quoted in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (The Book (#48) Pertaining to the Remembrance of Allah, Supplication, Repentance and Seeking Forgiveness - كتاب الذكر والدعاء والتوبة والاستغفار   / Chapter # 10 The Virtue of Tahlil (Saying La Ilaha Ill-Allah), Tasbih (Saying Subhan Allah) And (Du'a) Supplication / باب فَضْلِ التَّهْلِيلِ وَالتَّسْبِيحِ وَالدُّعَاءِ ‏‏ ) as Hadith number # 2695:

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَأَبُو كُرَيْبٍ قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ "‏ لأَنْ أَقُولَ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَلاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ أَحَبُّ إِلَىَّ مِمَّا طَلَعَتْ عَلَيْهِ الشَّمْسُ ‏"‏ ‏.‏

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:

The uttering of (these words):" Hallowed be Allah; all praise is due to Allah, there is no god but Allah and Allah is the Greatest," is dearer to me than anything over which the sun rises.

Prophetic supplications provide us with the best worded supplications to invoke the countless mercies of Allah. We should to remember these by heart or at least recite these by reading so many prophetic supplications that are mentioned in the Hadith books.
