Visiting the Sick (Sunnah Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

A man is prone to ailments and diseases, many of which are due to one's own negligence while some befall due to some epidemic or otherwise due to seasonal changes. No matter whatever the cause, the sickness is worrisome, specially when it gets aggravated. However, we must have faith that these ailment come as a test and we must remain steadfast no matter how hard hit we may be. Remember the anecdote of Prophet Ayyub (Job, AS) who fell ill so badly that wounds and blisters spread all over his body. Yet he remained steadfast and did not complain for he knew he was being tested. And surely these ailments are means of purification, and bringing a servant of God closer to Him.

While the dear and near ones take care of the ailing person, it is incumbent upon relatives and friends to visit the patient to lift up his spirits and invigorate his energies. It has been sunnah of  Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to visit whosever fell sick in the community and make special supplication for his early recovery.

It has been narrated by Ibn `Abbas that:

حَدَّثَنَا مُعَلَّى بْنُ أَسَدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ مُخْتَارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدٌ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم دَخَلَ عَلَى أَعْرَابِيٍّ ـ يَعُودُهُ ـ قَالَ وَكَانَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم إِذَا دَخَلَ عَلَى مَرِيضٍ يَعُودُهُ قَالَ لاَ بَأْسَ طَهُورٌ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ‏.‏ فَقَالَ لَهُ ‏"‏ لاَ بَأْسَ طَهُورٌ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ ‏"‏‏.‏ قَالَ قُلْتَ طَهُورٌ كَلاَّ بَلْ هِيَ حُمَّى تَفُورُ ـ أَوْ تَثُورُ ـ عَلَى شَيْخٍ كَبِيرٍ، تُزِيرُهُ الْقُبُورَ‏.‏ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏"‏ فَنَعَمْ إِذًا ‏"‏‏.‏

The Prophet (ﷺ) paid a visit to a sick Bedouin. The Prophet (ﷺ) when visiting a patient used to say, "No harm will befall you! May Allah cure you! May Allah cure you!" So the Prophet (ﷺ) said to the Bedouin. "Do not worry, it will be purification (for you) [that is No harm will befall you.] Allah willing!" The Bedouin said, "You say, may Allah cure me? No, for it is a fever which boils in (the body of) an old man, and will lead him to the grave." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Yes, then may it be as you say."

We too should follow this Sunnah of our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and whenever we visit a patient, we must console him and reassure him that No harm will befall you. May Allah cure you!

That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible to make you accept it forcibly, And if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, You will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Etiquettes of eating (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

 

Every man has his capacities to absorb food and drinks. No matter how many dishes one may have on the buffet tables, he simply cannot eat more than his body can absorb and digest. Those who out of greed try eating more than what they can digest often regret doing so after stuffing their stomach as heart burns and indigestion.

The revered Prophet Muhammad ﷺ forbade over eating and advised eating only a limited food for healthy living. In the 29th Chapters on Food ( كتاب الأطعمة ) of  Sunan Ibn Majah (Hadith 3349) Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has been quoted as saying as narrated by Miqdam bin Madikarib:

حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ الْحِمْصِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، حَدَّثَتْنِي أُمِّي، عَنْ أُمِّهَا، أَنَّهَا سَمِعَتِ الْمِقْدَامَ بْنَ مَعْدِيكَرِبَ، يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ يَقُولُ ‏ "‏ مَا مَلأَ آدَمِيٌّ وِعَاءً شَرًّا مِنْ بَطْنٍ حَسْبُ الآدَمِيِّ لُقَيْمَاتٌ يُقِمْنَ صُلْبَهُ فَإِنْ غَلَبَتِ الآدَمِيَّ نَفْسُهُ فَثُلُثٌ لِلطَّعَامِ وَثُلُثٌ لِلشَّرَابِ وَثُلُثٌ لِلنَّفَسِ ‏"‏

“I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: ‘A human being fills no worse vessel than his stomach. It is sufficient for a human being to eat a few mouthfuls to keep his spine straight. But if he must (fill it), then one third of food, one third for drink and one third for air.’”

If we analyze the above quoted Hadith, we would know that many ills in our bodies are attributed to overeating and eating more than what we actually need to live. If this Hadith is followed in true letter and spirit, we will feel a lighter and healthy body. This will lead to happier life as eating in proportion may ward of many a ailments.

The medical science has analyzed effects of human body lately and herein under are some of the harmful effects of overeating on one's body and overall health state (read detailed report here):

• May promote excess body fat
• May disrupt hunger regulation
• May increase disease risk
• May impair brain function
• May make you nauseous
• May cause excessive gas and bloating
• May make you sleepy

So let us live a simple and healthy life by eating less in the light of hadith quoted above.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the  Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others life miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏

Charity: The Virtue of Visiting the Sick (Hadith Qudsi)

Charity is one of the most noble things that a believer can do and help his brethren to ease their lives. Normally we take charity in terms of food, money or any means of sustenance to the poor and needy. But charity has a vast context in Islam.

Today we share a Hadith Qudsi, a collection of about forty hadiths the source of which is none other Allah Almighty Himself.  A question arises if the revelation is from Allah, why isn't it included in the Qur'an. So let us understand what is a Hadith a Qudsi really is: 

Hadith Qudsi or Hadith Qudse (Arabic: الحديث القدسي, meaning "pure" or "holy Hadith") is a special category of Hadith, the compendium of sayings attributed to the Islamic prophet Muhammad. It is stated these Hadiths are unique because their content is attributed to God but the actual wording was credited to Muhammad. This may be one of the reasons they are not included in the Quranic revelations, which are considered to be the verbatim word of God but rather are given a special category, thus occupying a status between Quran and normal Hadith text.

With this description and differentiation between Hadith Qudsi and a Prophetic Hadith, let us share one of the forty Hadith Qudsi on the subject of charity. By going through the Hadith, the reader will automatically know the language in a directive form, the source of which can be no one else by Allah Almighty Himself: 

This Hadith Qudsi is mentioned in the Sahi Bokhari volume: The Book of Virtue, Enjoining Good Manners, and Joining of the Ties of Kinship ( كتاب البر والصلة والآداب ) in the 13th Chapter: The Virtue of Visiting the Sick ( باب فَضْلِ عِيَادَةِ الْمَرِيضِ ) Hadith 2569:

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:

حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَاتِمِ بْنِ مَيْمُونٍ، حَدَّثَنَا بَهْزٌ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ أَبِي رَافِعٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ "‏ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يَقُولُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ يَا ابْنَ آدَمَ مَرِضْتُ فَلَمْ تَعُدْنِي ‏.‏ قَالَ يَا رَبِّ كَيْفَ أَعُودُكَ وَأَنْتَ رَبُّ الْعَالَمِينَ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَمَا عَلِمْتَ أَنَّ عَبْدِي فُلاَنًا مَرِضَ فَلَمْ تَعُدْهُ أَمَا عَلِمْتَ أَنَّكَ لَوْ عُدْتَهُ لَوَجَدْتَنِي عِنْدَهُ يَا ابْنَ آدَمَ اسْتَطْعَمْتُكَ فَلَمْ تُطْعِمْنِي ‏.‏ قَالَ يَا رَبِّ وَكَيْفَ أُطْعِمُكَ وَأَنْتَ رَبُّ الْعَالَمِينَ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَمَا عَلِمْتَ أَنَّهُ اسْتَطْعَمَكَ عَبْدِي فُلاَنٌ فَلَمْ تُطْعِمْهُ أَمَا عَلِمْتَ أَنَّكَ لَوْ أَطْعَمْتَهُ لَوَجَدْتَ ذَلِكَ عِنْدِي يَا ابْنَ آدَمَ اسْتَسْقَيْتُكَ فَلَمْ تَسْقِنِي ‏.‏ قَالَ يَا رَبِّ كَيْفَ أَسْقِيكَ وَأَنْتَ رَبُّ الْعَالَمِينَ قَالَ اسْتَسْقَاكَ عَبْدِي فُلاَنٌ فَلَمْ تَسْقِهِ أَمَا إِنَّكَ لَوْ سَقَيْتَهُ وَجَدْتَ ذَلِكَ عِنْدِي ‏"‏ .‏

"Verily, Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, would say on the Day of Resurrection: O son of Adam, I was sick but you did not visit Me. He would say: O my Lord; how could I visit Thee whereas Thou art the Lord of the worlds? Thereupon He would say: Didn't you know that such and such servant of Mine was sick but you did not visit him and were you not aware of this that if you had visited him, you would have found Me by him? O son of Adam, I asked food from you but you did not feed Me. He would say: My Lord, how could I feed Thee whereas Thou art the Lord of the worlds? He said: Didn't you know that such and such servant of Mine asked food from you but you did not feed him, and were you not aware that if you had fed him you would have found him by My side? (The Lord would again say: ) O son of Adam, I asked drink from you but you did not provide Me. He would say: My Lord, how could I provide Thee whereas Thou art the Lord of the worlds? Thereupon He would say: Such and such of servant of Mine asked you for a drink but you did not provide him, and had you provided him drink you would have found him near Me."

This Hadith carries a special significance on the subject of Charity wherein Allah clearly spells out the importance of Charity which we more often than not relegate for our own needs. Here even visiting a sick amount to charity, an action we more often than not skip and do not visit the sick. In addition to this kind of charity, feeding the hungry and providing drink to the thirsty also fall under the ambit of charity.

Let us be mindful of our duty in respect to the sick, hungry and the thirsty and help them as much as we can.

Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ : Prostration out of Gratitude

Man is nothing of his own. Whatever he owns or has or achieves in one's life is a blessing from Allah. No one can boast of one's own capacities and capabilities for one's achievements in life. Those who are grateful have their Rizq and sustenance multiplied to unknown limits. But those who boast of their achievements and credit themselves and do not thank Allah are often seen deprived of their achievements and position.

The anecdote of Karun in Qur'an is just but one example. He was so wealthy that it is said the keys of his coffers were carried by seventy camels. He was boastful of his wealth and ungrateful to Allah for whatever he had. So as a punishment his entire wealth was buried inside the sand and was left with nothing. 

Therefore, whenever one is blessed or hears a good news, he must instantly prostrate out of gratitude to thank Allah. This has been Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ all along his life. This act of his is recorded in Sunan Abi Dawud: (Kitab Al-Jihad) - كتاب الجهاد » Hadith 2774 as under:

حَدَّثَنَا مَخْلَدُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ، بَكَّارِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ أَخْبَرَنِي أَبِي عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَنَّهُ كَانَ إِذَا جَاءَهُ أَمْرُ سُرُورٍ أَوْ بُشِّرَ بِهِ خَرَّ سَاجِدًا شَاكِرًا لِلَّهِ ‏.‏

Narrated by Abu Bakrah: When anything came to the Prophet (ﷺ) which caused pleasure (or, by which he was made glad), he prostrated himself in gratitude to Allah.

 (Grade: Sahih (Al-Albani))

Let us adopt this Sunnah and whenever we receive good news or an addition is made in our blessings, we should immediately prostrate as an act of gratitude so that we are continued to be blessed,

Reference Page: Sunnah, Hadith and Prophetic Supplications of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

My dear readers, and brothers and sisters! We at Islam: My Ultimate Decision have made an earnest effort to convey the true word of Islam. While we have made many sections of our site so that our readers can easily go to the section of knowledge about Islam they may be seeking.  Today we add yet another sub section to our site which is about the Sunnah and Hadith of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

We have already written a detailed introductory post on Sunnah and Hadith of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and many other posts on the subject. We now feel a need to compile all such posts so that anyone looking for knowing more on Sunnah and Hadith of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ may be able to find these in this reference page.

However, it is just the beginning and tip of the iceberg as this a very large segment of our religion and volumes have been written by many Hadith compilers like:

• Sahih Bukhari by Muhammad al-Bukhari (194-256 AH)
• Sahih Muslim: a 9th-century hadith and sunnah compiled by the Persian scholar Muslim ibn al-Ḥajjāj (815–875). The Sahih of Muslim collection contains nearly 12,000 hadiths but again given repetitions and multiple versions of the same report, the actual number of Prophetic traditions is estimated at around 4000.
• Sunan Abu Dawood by Abu Dawud al-Sijistani (d.889)
• Sunan al-Tirmidhi by Al-Tirmidhi.[1] He began compiling it after the year 250 A.H. (A.D. 864/5) and completed it on the 10 Dhu-al-Hijjah 270 A.H. (A.D. 884, June 9).
• Sunan al-Nasa'i by al-Nasa'i (214 – 303 AH; c. 829 – 915 CE).
• Sunan ibn Majah by Ibn Mājah (born 824 CE, died 887CE).

There are many other eminent scholars and Hadith collectors who took upon them the sacred task of preserving the Hadith of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Bu the ones referred above are considered more authentic and whole encompassing. But we would restrict our compilations of the above quoted six compilations for most of the Hadiths are authentic based on credible linkages.

Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: Sleep Early to Wake up for Night Prayer (Tahajjad)

After a hard day's night, one is exceptionally tired and wants to hit the bed to get a nigh-tful of sleep. That is what most of us do. But ever thought of breaking your sleep when you have yet to recover from your day's tiredness and offer night prayer?

Yes very difficult - but not impossible. If one knows the reward of breaking sleep and offering the night prayer, called Tahajjad, one would never think of his tiredness and would get up to pray a few cycles of night prayer (any sets of two cycles ending with the Witr prayer).

Sleeping early and offering the night prayer was one of the never missed activity and he advised his companions to follow the suit for it is the night prayer when man can talk to one's Creator one to one in the quietness of the dark night when no one can see tears rolling down from one's eyes when earnestly pleading for help and forgiveness of one's sins.

The Sunnah is mentioned in the  Sahih al-Bukhari - Prayer at Night (Tahajjud) - Hadith 1146 as under:

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ،‏.‏ وَحَدَّثَنِي سُلَيْمَانُ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنِ الأَسْوَدِ، قَالَ سَأَلْتُ عَائِشَةَ ـ رضى الله عنها ـ كَيْفَ صَلاَةُ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم بِاللَّيْلِ قَالَتْ كَانَ يَنَامُ أَوَّلَهُ وَيَقُومُ آخِرَهُ، فَيُصَلِّي ثُمَّ يَرْجِعُ إِلَى فِرَاشِهِ، فَإِذَا أَذَّنَ الْمُؤَذِّنُ وَثَبَ، فَإِنْ كَانَ بِهِ حَاجَةٌ اغْتَسَلَ، وَإِلاَّ تَوَضَّأَ وَخَرَجَ‏.‏

It is narrated Al-Aswad: I asked `Aisha (wife of the Prophet of Allah) "How is the night prayer of the Prophet?" She replied, "He used to sleep early at night, and get up in its last part to pray, and then return to his bed. When the Mu'adh-dhin pronounced the Adhan, he would get up. If he was in need of a bath he would take it; otherwise he would perform ablution and then go out (for the prayer)."

So let us follow this great Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ of sleeping early and not watching late night TV shows or chatting on social media, and get up any time before the Fajr (Pre Dawn) prayer and offer at least 2 cycles of night prayers. Supplication in times of Distress (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

Life is never easy. It has its ups and downs and distress falls even when one's life is going smoothly and without worries. When in distress one always turns to Allah for redressal of one's pain of distress. But in such agony, one finds him at loss of words to make a supplication.

The following Hadith provides a format for making a supplication when in distress for Prophet of Allah advised his companions to make this supplication to invoke mercifulness of Allah:

عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ عِنْدَ الْكَرْبِ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ الْعَلِيمُ الْحَلِيمُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ رَبُّ السَّمَوَاتِ وَرَبُّ الْأَرْضِ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْكَرِيمِ

Ibn Abbas reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would say at a time of distress, “There is no God but Allah, the Knowing, the Forbearing. There is no God but Allah, Lord of the Great Throne. There is no God but Allah, Lord of the heavens, the earth, and the Noble Throne.”

By praising Allah with as good names as appear in the supplication, one can forward one's distress to Allah and be rest assured Allah is Al-`Alim (العليم) - The All-Knowing, The Omniscient, Al-Mujib (المجيب) - The Fulfiller of Prayers, The Responsive, Ar Rahman (الرحمن) - The Beneficent, Most Kind and Gracious and As-Samad (الصمد) - The Satisfier of All Needs.

Divine Forgiveness - For Whom?

No matter how strong faith one may have, in some point in time of his life, one is likely to fall pray to the Evil and commit sins that places one's conciousness in extreme stress. And at that time except God, no one can offer solace and satisfaction to a lamenting heart. Mindful of such condition of His servants, God has at many places in the Qur'an asked His servants to return to Him for He is most Merciful and Forgiving.

Likewise, the servants of God are promised forgiveness if they are resentful and oft seeking forgiveness. The following 9th verse from Surah 5. Al Maida is based on a similar theme to give glad tidings to Allah's servants:

وَعَدَ اللّٰهُ الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا وَعَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِ​ ۙ لَهُمۡ مَّغۡفِرَةٌ وَّاَجۡرٌ عَظِيۡمٌ‏ 

(5:9) Allah has promised those who believe and do righteous deeds forgiveness from sins and a great reward.

Eminent 14th century Muslim scholar Ibn-Kathir explains this verse in following words:

(Allah has promised those who believe and do deeds of righteousness, that for them there is forgiveness) for their sins,

(and a great reward.) which is Paradise, that is part of Allah's mercy for His servants. They will not earn Paradise on account of their good actions, but rather on account of His mercy and favor, even though they will qualify to earn this mercy on account of their good actions. Allah has made these actions the cause and path that lead to His mercy, favor, pardon and acceptance. Therefore, all this is from Allah Alone and all thanks are due to Him.

Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:

There must be a reward given by God to the believers, who deal with Him alone. This reward is needed to give encouragement to people to fulfil their obligations and to discharge their trust. The end of those who disbelieve and deny God’s revelations must be different from that of those who believe and do well. The 'great reward' is a reward to compensate good believers for what they miss of the luxuries and riches of this life when they fulfil their trust. It is a reward that reduces to insignificance all the hardship faced by the believers as they face up to human obstinacy and determined denial of the truth. It is only fair that Divine justice will not deliver to the good and the bad the same treatment.

Believers need to look up to this Divine system of justice and reward, so that they are able to overcome all temptations and impediments when they deal with God. Certain people only need to feel that God is pleased with them to appreciate its value, as well as the value of discharging their trust. But the Divine system deals with all people and with human nature itself. God knows that by nature man needs this promise of forgiveness and rich reward and needs to know the end of the disbelievers and their punishment. This reassures the believers and enables them to face up to the schemes of the evil ones, especially since they are commanded to deal justly with those whom they hate because of all the hardship they may have suffered at their hands.

Just a simple worse but have very far fetched meaning, for those fear Allah and surely Allah is well aware of what you do. Here we just been asked to have do righteous deeds and always be seeking forgiveness of Allah by repenting even for the slightest of sin lest these become too heavy on the Day of Resurrection.

Sunnah and Hadith of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Qur'an. a compilations of all revelations from Allah to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ through arch angel Jibraeel (Gabriel). Qur'an, the last of the four Divine Scriptures, is the main pillar of guidance for all mankind for there would be no more prophets and no more Divine Revelations.  Qur'an in fact is conglomeration of Divine Instructions, Directives and Commandments for the guidance of the man.

However, there are many instructions which are mentioned in Qur'an giving no details or verses for these need to be physically demonstrated for explanation and further elaboration. It has been commanded in the 59th verse of Surah 4. An Nisa that whenever believers dispute on something they should refer to Allah (for prophets) and Qur'an for ordinary Muslims and the Messenger of Allah:

(4:59) Believers! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger, and those from among you who are invested with authority; and then if you were to dispute among yourselves about anything refer it to Allah and the Messenger if you indeed believe in Allah and the Last Day; that is better and more commendable in the end.

Here comes then the importance of Sunnah and Hadith of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. These Sunnah and Hadith do not add anything more to Qur'an but add modalities which have been left out in Qur'an for Qur'an only provides guidance and instructions for undertaking actions and adopting our lives as per the Divine Wishes.

It is therefore incumbent upon us to understand what Sunnah and Hadith mean and how they are clarifying means for practical manifestation of instructions, commandments of Allah. 

Sunnah

Let us begin with Sunnah first. Sunnah shows how the Islam should be practiced and it completely voids all those arguments which challenge the practicality of the teachings of Quran. Sunnah according to the Arabic means a conduct, a way of life or a manner in which someone acts. According to the science of Hadith, it terms as whatever acts, statements, and a physical conduct or a physical action done by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ during his prophethood is specifically and exclusively termed as Sunnah. According to the legal side of the Fiqh the recommended actions are termed as Sunnah.

Thus in short, Sunnah are the physical actions of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to elaborate the instructions contained therein the Qur'an. For example, believers are commanded to perform Salat / Prayer five times a day. But how to perform the Salat, it is not mentioned in the Qur'an. Therefore Angel Gabriel was sent don to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and he demonstrated the Prophet of Allah as how to perform Salat. In return, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ demonstrated the performance of Salat physically to his companions and as long as he lived, he led the prayers in congregation so that his followers should continue to pray Salat as demonstrated by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.  The Prophet of Allah has been quoted as saying:

“Pray as you saw me pray,”[ Sahih Al-Bukhari, vol. 1, no. 604.] and he specified that surplus wealth, unused for a year, should be given as zakat

Thus the revered  Prophet ﷺ also showed how may cycles each Salat should have. And also what is to be recited in various positions of Salat, like Standing (Qiyam), Bowing (Ruku) , Prostration (Sajda) and Jalsa (Sitting position till the end of the Salat)

From left to right: (1) Qiyaam, (2) رکـــــــوع Ruku  (3) سجـــــــدہ Sajdah (4) Jalsa

For example, Malik b. Huwairith reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) raised his hands apposite his ears at the time of reciting the takbir (i. e. at the time of beginning the prayer) and then again raised his hands apposite the ears at the time of bowing and when he lifted his head after bowing he said: Allah listened to him who praised Him, and did like it (raised his hands up to the ears).  (Muslim 4:762)

This is but one example of Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ which provides practical manifestation of how to offer Salat. We will in due course add on more Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for guidance of Muslims, specially the reverts - that is those who have recently embraced Islam.

Hadith

Side by Sunnah of Prophet of Allah, Hadith also form an important part of belief of the believers. What do we mean by  Hadith? Hadith are the wise sayings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ which he has been telling his companions and audience in explanation of Quranic verses.

There are two types of Hadith:

• The sacred called Hadith e Qudsi- these are sacred sayings in which Muhammad quotes words from Allah which are not included in the Qur’an.
• The prophetic - these are wise sayings which the Prophet himself gave. They do not have the same authority as the Qur’an as they are not direct revelation from Allah, but are inspired sayings.

Like Sunnah, all wise sayings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ are by and large interpretation and elaboration of divine Commandments as contained in the Qur'an and matters that require more deliberation. This is as said in the Qur'an:

(We sent them) with Clear Signs and Books of dark prophecies; and We have sent down unto thee [Muhammad (ﷺ)] the Message; that thou mayest explain clearly to men what is sent for them, and that they may give thought. [Qur’an 16:44]

The above said verse clearly indicates that whenever there is a dispute, it should be referred to the Messenger of Allah, who would resolve the issue based on the instructions contained in the Qur'an.  These add ons become wise sayings of the Prophet of Allah and are known as the Hadith. 

Thus it may be said that the Sunnah and Hadith define the  moral conduct in Islam for these have been manifested in the very personal conduct of the Prophet of Allah and thus become a role model for all Muslims till the end of the world. 

Surely there is for all of you a good example (of conduct) in the way of Allah’s Messenger [Qur’an 33:21]

Since many Muslims have not understood the importance of Sunnah and Hadith of  Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, they are often at loss in correctly interpreting the meaning of verses of Qur'an. In fact a segment of Muslims believe that only Qur'an is to be understood and consulted for they find Sunnah and Hadith at tangent with the teachings of Islam. Whereas the opposite is true. The mere procedure of conducting Salat is but one example of many explanatory Sunnah and Hadith of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that provide practical implementation of Salat. In fact Qur’an is the message, and the Hadith is the explanation of the message by the Messenger himself.

In this regard the following verse of Qur'an clarifies the ambiguity:

It is not fitting for a Believer, man or woman, when a matter has been decided by Allah and His Messenger to have any option about their decision: if any one disobeys Allah and His Messenger, he is indeed on a clearly wrong Path.(33:36 Quran)

The Farewell Sermon (Arabic: خطبة الوداع, Khuṭbatu l-Widāʿ ) also known as Muhammad's Final Sermon or the Last Sermon, is a religious speech, delivered by the Prophet Muhammad on Friday the 9th of Dhu al-Hijjah, 10 AH (6 March 632[1]) in the Uranah valley of Mount Arafat, during the Hajj. The entire sermon is in fact a summing up of all important things that he wanted to impress upon so that no  one goes astray after him. In fact the sermon itself can be summed as many wise things he wanted to say. And at the end, he cautioned all those present in these very words:

O people. I have conveyed the Message, and have left you with something which, if you hold fast to it, you will never go astray: that is, the Book of God and the sunnah of His Prophet. 

So brothers and sisters, let us not leave Qur'an and Sunnah of the revered Prophetof Allah so that we do not get astray and understand Islam in its true spirit and meaning. Ameen. 

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the  Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others life miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.  

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible to make you accept it forcibly, And if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, You will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so  that they are able to discuss issues with Non Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

Note: When we mention God in our posts, we mean One True God, we call Allah in Islam, with no associates. Allah is the Sole Creator of all things, and that Allah is all-powerful and all-knowing. Allah has no offspring, no race, no gender, no body, and is unaffected by the characteristics of human life.
