Compiled verses on specific subjects from Qur'an: Repentance and Seeking Divine Forgiveness

Man is born to err and make mistakes. Even prophets, who were chosen ones at times erred, the example of Adam and Eve to quote one of many such incidents. The momentarily derailment from the Straight Path as spelt out by Lord of the Universe is more often than not is immediately felt by those whose hearts kindles with Divine light.

The Qur'an and Hadith abound in verses and directives for making amends no sooner any deviation from Divine Path takes place. God has on guided His servants time and again, and again to return to him immediately after making a mistake, or committing a sin or hurting someone, and repent and seek the Divine forgiveness.

(3:133) And hasten to the forgiveness of your Lord and to a Paradise as vast as the heavens and the earth, prepared for the God-fearing.

The above quoted verse is one of the many verses in Qur'an wherein Allah encourages His servants to come to him repenting his sin or misdeed and seek His forgiveness. And the Lord, so merciful and kind, promises that He will forgive His servants provided they truly repent not to repeat their evil act and seek forgiveness.

We have already shared many compiled verses on specific subjects so that our readers have easy access to these for instant reference. This new page is being added on the subject of Repentance and Seeking Divine Forgiveness. The verses from Qur;an so far compiled are as under:

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Note: When we mention God in our posts, we mean One True God, we call Allah in Islam, with no associates. Allah is the Sole Creator of all things, and that Allah is all-powerful and all-knowing. Prophetic Supplication (Dua / دُعا) - attributed to Prophet Zechariah for Goodly and Pious Offspring

One of the greatest blessings of Allah is pious and goodly offspring, something that is the earnest desire of every parent. The pious and obedient offspring act as the light of their parents' eyes, especially as they age. But if the offspring turn out to be rude, arrogant and disrespectful, the whole life of parents turns into misery and living becomes a bane.

Even prophets have been mentioned in Qur'an and other Divine Scriptures supplicating for goodly offspring. Today we share the 38th verse of Surah 3. Al-i'Imran: 38 in which Prophet Zechariah (زَكَرِيَّا علي السلام) has been mentioned supplicating to the Lord of the universe for grant of goodly offspring.

It may be mentioned here that the birth of Mariam (Mary, the mother of Jesus), of Yahya (John the Baptist), the precursor of Jesus, and of Jesus, the prophet of Israel, whom Israel rejected, occurred in that order chronologically, and are told in that order. They are all inter-connected. Zakariya prayed for no ordinary son. He and his wife were past the age of parenthood. Seeing the growth of Mary, he prayed for some child from Allah, - "from Thee, a progeny that is pure". To his surprise, he is given a son in the flesh, ushered in by a special Sign. Details in the explanation of the verse below:

هُنَالِكَ دَعَا زَكَرِيَّا رَبَّهٗ ۚ قَالَ رَبِّ هَبۡ لِىۡ مِنۡ لَّدُنۡكَ ذُرِّيَّةً طَيِّبَةً  ۚ اِنَّكَ سَمِيۡعُ الدُّعَآءِ‏
(3:38) Then Zechariah prayed to his Lord: 'O Lord! Grant me from Yourself out of Your grace the gift of a goodly offspring, for indeed You alone heed all Prayers.'

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir: (The Supplication of Zakariyya, and the Good News of Yahya's Birth):
When Zechariah, also spelt Zakariyya, who had Maryam (Mary, mother of Jesus) under his care, saw that Allah provided sustenance for Maryam, when he visited her in her seclusion, by giving her the fruits of winter in summer and the fruits of summer in winter, he was eager to have a child of his own. By then, Zakariyya had become an old man, his bones feeble and his head full of gray hair. His wife was an old woman who was barren. Yet, he still supplicated to Allah and called Him in secret.

Since Zechariah was special to God, his supplication was immediately accepted and an angel appeared right there at the place of his supplication and broke him the good news of a son being born to him. This mentioned right in the next verse:

(3:39) As he stood praying in the sanctuary, the angels called out to him: 'Allah gives you good tidings of Yahya (later John the Baptist), who shall confirm a command of Allah, shall be outstanding among men, utterly chaste, and a Prophet from among the righteous.'

(3:40) Zechariah (flabbergasted by such news and) exclaimed: 'My Lord! How shall I have a son when old age has overtaken me and my wife is barren?' He said: Thus, shall it be; Allah does what He wills.' and thus God granted Zechariah a son despite his old age and despite the barrenness of his wife. Thus, Yahya was born just six months before Jesus (peace be upon him). Yahya was born a son, destined to be a chaste leader and Prophet.

The purpose of sharing this supplication is for those who married people who for some reason lose hope of having an offspring born to them. If one sincerely prays with complete faith in Allah, the supplication never goes unanswered. And as is evident from the verses stated above, the most appropriate time to draw near the angels and to invoke and supplicate before the Almighty is that of the prayer.

We must never lose hope and get dejected if our supplications do not materialize for Allah knows the best for us. Waiting is just part of the Divine tests that are given to gauge the firmness of faith of His servants. Pray that we are never put to test and that Allah grants our wishes for us to be ever grateful to Him.
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. The grave consequences of committing suicide (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

Death by suicide, that is the act of intentionally causing one's own death, is one of the leading attempts to end one's life. As per a report published by the World Health Organization [1], more than 700 000 people die due to suicide every year. Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death among 15–29-year-olds. As per Wikipedia [2], the reasons of committing suicide are many, some of which may be due to:
Mental disorders (including depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, personality disorders, anxiety disorders), physical disorders (such as chronic fatigue syndrome), and substance abuse (including alcoholism and the use of and withdrawal from benzodiazepines) are risk factors. Some suicides are impulsive acts due to stress (such as from financial or academic difficulties), relationship problems (such as breakups or divorces), or harassment and bullying.
Every suicide is a tragedy that affects families, communities and entire countries and has long-lasting effects on the people left behind. However, no matter what the reason for ending one's life may be, Islam strictly prohibits such acts for life is a gift of Allah and it is only He Who has the right to take it away, for every man is born fir a reason. And when that reason is accomplished, the natural death occurs. Thus, any attempt on one's life with an intention of ending is strictly forbidden.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has also warned believers from taking their lives and has spelt the consequences of such an act. This Hadith is mentioned in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī  (Book 76 - Medicine كتاب الطب / Chapter 56: The taking of poison and treating with it باب شُرْبِ السُّمِّ، وَالدَّوَاءِ بِهِ، وَبِمَا يُخَافُ مِنْهُ وَالْخَبِيثِ ) as Hadith 5778, given herein under:

Narrated by Abu Huraira:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Whoever purposely throws himself from a mountain and kills himself, will be in the (Hell) Fire falling down into it and abiding therein perpetually forever; and whoever drinks poison and kills himself with it, he will be carrying his poison in his hand and drinking it in the (Hell) Fire wherein he will abide eternally forever; and whoever kills himself with an iron weapon, will be carrying that weapon in his hand and stabbing his `Abdomen with it in the (Hell) Fire wherein he will abide eternally forever."
Although ones who commit suicide are generally seem to be so depressed and for many other reasons as mentioned above, yet the main reason for any believer to attempt ending his life is lack of faith in his Creator. No life is perfect - it has its ups and down, but that does not mean that when is confronted with situations that rob him of his comfort, wealth and health, one should decide to end his life. In fact, such grave situations in one's life are the Divine tests to see whether one has unflinching faith in one's Creator or otherwise. Those with weak faith and heart often fall prey to the desire to commit suicide, while those who are hit against the wall for any reason but remain steadfast, come out of their bad days and find a meaning to their existence and life.
“And do not kill yourselves,” declares Quran (nor kill one another). “Allah is, without a doubt, most merciful to you” (Surah al‐Nisa, 4:29).
There is another Hadith in which Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has been quoted as saying:
"Amongst the nations before you there was a man who got a wound, and growing impatient (with its pain), he took a knife and cut his hand with it and the blood did not stop till he died. Allah said, 'My Slave hurried to bring death upon himself so I have forbidden him (to enter) Paradise.' " (Sahih Bukhari: 3469)

The crime of committing suicide is so grave that the Prophet of Allah even refrained from attending the funeral of a person who ended his life. It is mentioned that the Prophet (S.A.W.) refrained from offering the Janazah (funeral prayer) for one who had committed suicide, as a punishment to him and so as to discourage others from doing what he had done. But he gave the people permission to offer the Janazah for him.

‘(The dead body) of a person who had killed himself with a broad-headed arrow was brought before the Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.), but he did not offer prayers for him.’ (Sahih Muslim: 978)

However, this does not mean that we should not pray and make Dua for the mercy and forgiveness of the person who committed suicide. We must make prayers because the person who committed suicide highly needs it as it is a major sin, though this does not take him outside of Islam. It is subject to the will of Allah on the Day of Resurrection, if He wills, He will forgive it, and if He wills, He will punish for it.  Remember, when we do commit suicide, we are leaving it without permission from Allah. This is why it is haram in Islam.[3]

So let us, brothers and sisters in Islam, be steadfast in every adverse circumstance and have faith in Allah for one never knows when one is relieved of his bad times, provided he qualifies the test, and his bad days are replaced with happiness and blessings. Let our lives be respected and protected from our hurried decisions

Allah accepts repentance soon after committing a sin - but not so late when angel of death arrives

Every maker of a machine knows what faults it inherently possesses and how these are to be rectified as faults occur in the due course of its usage. Likewise, when Lord of the universe created man, He was cognizance of the inherent weakness of His creation - falling prey to evil. And this ability was soon demonstrated when Adm and Eve disobeyed the Divine Command of not eating the fruit of a forbidden tree enticed by the Devil.

And Allah had fixed a chip inside to instantly recognize their folly of committing a sin and immediately, not waiting a second later for one never knows when the angel of death may arrive. And so did Adam and Eve did and immediately repented and were forgiven. In the backdrop of this inherent weakness of man, Qur'an abounds in verse in which Allah promises man to repent their sins no sooner these are committed and seek Divine forgiveness, so that they may be forgiven. Many of these verses are shared under the heading: Forgiveness/Repentance in our series of posts on Selected verses from Qur'an.

Today we share another verse from Qur'an, the 17th verse of Surah 4. An Nisa (The Women), with a add on verse that makes the two verses complimenting.

(4:17) Allah accepts only the repentance of those who do evil in ignorance and foolishness and repent soon afterwards; it is they to whom Allah will forgive and Allah is Ever All-Knower, All-Wise.

Muhammad Asad is of the view that the expression min qarib, which here implies nearness in time, could also be rendered as "soon", i.e., soon after having committed the evil deed; most of the classical commentators however, hold that in this context it denotes the time before the actual approach of death. This interpretation is borne out by the next verse.

Javed Ahmad Ghamidi explains that the actual word is: جَهَالَة. Though it also means “ignorance” it is predominantly used to mean committing a sin or some mischief while being overwhelmed by emotions. Thus, in Arabic it generally occurs as an opposite of self-control (ḥilm) instead of knowledge (‘ilm).

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir: (Repentance is accepted until one faces death)

Allah states that He accepts repentance of the servant who commits an error in ignorance and then repents, even just before he sees the angel who captures the soul, before his soul reaches his throat. Mujahid and others said, "Every person who disobeys Allah by mistake, or intentionally is ignorant, until he refrains from sin.' Qatadah said that Abu Al-`Aliyah narrated that the Companions of the Messenger of Allah used to say, "Every sin that the servant commits, he commits out of ignorance.' `Abdur-Razzaq narrated that, Ma`mar said that Qatadah said that, the Companions of the Messenger of Allah agreed that every sin that is committed by intention or otherwise, is committed in ignorance.' Ibn Jurayj said, "Abdullah bin Kathir narrated to me that Mujahid said, `Every person who disobeys Allah (even willfully), is ignorant while committing the act of disobedience.'' Ibn Jurayj said, "`Ata' bin Abi Rabah told me something similar.' Abu Salih said that Ibn `Abbas commented, "It is because of one's ignorance that he commits the error.'
`Ali bin Abi Talhah reported that Ibn `Abbas said about the Ayah, (ثُمَّ يَتُوبُونَ مِن قَرِيبٍ and repent soon (afterwards)), "Until just before he (or she) looks at the angel of death.''
Ad-Dahhak said, "Everything before death is `soon (afterwards).'''
Al-Hasan Al-Basri said about the Ayah, (ثُمَّ يَتُوبُونَ مِن قَرِيبٍ and repent soon afterwards), "Just before his last breath leaves his throat.'' `Ikrimah said, "All of this life is `soon (afterwards).''

Imam Ahmad recorded that Ibn `Umar said that the Messenger said, Allah accepts the repentance of the servant as long as the soul does not reach the throat.) This Hadith was also collected by At-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah, and At-Tirmidhi said, "Hasan Gharib''. By mistake, Ibn Majah mentioned that this Hadith was narrated through `Abdullah bin `Amr.

However, what is correct is that `Abdullah bin `Umar bin Al-Khattab was the narrator. It is they to whom Allah will forgive and Allah is Ever All-Knower, All-Wise.) Surely, when hope in continued living diminishes, the angel of death comes forth and the soul reaches the throat, approaches the chest and arrives at the state where it is being gradually pulled out, then there is no accepted repentance, nor a way out of that certain end.

Hence Allah's statements (the 18th verse):

وَلَيْسَتِ التَّوْبَةُ لِلَّذِينَ يَعْمَلُونَ السَّيِّئَـتِ حَتَّى إِذَا حَضَرَ أَحَدَهُمُ الْمَوْتُ قَالَ إِنِّى تُبْتُ الاٌّنَ
(And of no effect is the repentance of those who continue to do evil deeds until death faces one of them and he says: "Now I repent,'')
As also:
(So, when they saw Our punishment, they said: "We believe in Allah Alone...'') [40:84]
Allah decided that repentance shall not be accepted from the people of the earth when the sun rises from the west, as Allah said,

(The day that some of the signs of your Lord do come, no good will it do to a person to believe then, if he believed not before, nor earned good through his faith.) [6:158]
Allah said, (وَلاَ الَّذِينَ يَمُوتُونَ وَهُمْ كُفَّارٌ nor of those who die while they are disbelievers.) Consequently, when the disbeliever dies while still a disbeliever and polytheist, his sorrow and repentance shall not avail him. If he were to ransom himself, even with the earth's fill of gold, it would not be accepted by him.
Ibn `Abbas, Abu Al-`Aliyah and Ar-Rabi` bin Anas said that the Ayah: (وَلاَ الَّذِينَ يَمُوتُونَ وَهُمْ كُفَّارٌ nor of those who die while they are disbelievers), was revealed about the people of Shirk.
Imam Ahmad recorded that Usamah bin Salman said that Abu Dharr said that the Messenger of Allah said, Allah accepts the repentance of His servant, or forgives His servant, as long as the veil does not drop.) They asked, "And what does the drop of the veil mean '' He said, (أَنْ تَخْرُجَ النَّفْسُ وَهِيَ مُشْرِكَة When the soul is removed while one is a polytheist.)
Allah then said, (أُوْلَـئِكَ أَعْتَدْنَا لَهُمْ عَذَاباً أَلِيماً (For them We have prepared a painful torment), torment that is severe, eternal and enormous.

The purpose of sharing the 17th and the 18th verses of Surah An Nisa is to stress upon the need of committing a sin, and then repenting AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE for no one knows when his time is up in this world. The warning is stern that when when the time of death arrives then no repentance shall be accepted and from then on one will plunge into darkness and finally the hellfire.
A treasure from the treasures of Paradise (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

It is human nature to praise someone superior either out of love or to obtain attention and rewards in return. But how unfortunate of us Muslims that we seldom remember the Lord of the universe in words or attributes befitting Allah's self. At many a place in Qur'an and even Hadiths of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ the need to remember Allah with all its attributes to show our love and faith in Him.

Today, we share a Hadith of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in which he emphasizes the need to remember Allah in words that the revered prophet of Allah said that these words are treasure from the treasure of Paradise.

This Hadith is mentioned Jami` at-Tirmidhi  (Book # 48 Chapters on Supplication كتاب الدعوات عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم / Chapter # 130 The Virtue Of: “There Is No Might or Power Except by Allah” باب فَضْلِ لاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللَّهِ ) as Hadith number # 3601, given herein under:

Abu Hurairah said:
“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to me: ‘Be frequent in saying: “There is no might or power except by Allah, (Lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh).” For verily, it is a treasure from the treasures of Paradise.’”

And verily, these words, in the form of a supplication, show our firm faith that there is no power mightier than Allah and none can overstep His unchallengeable status. We should, more often than not, repeat this supplication as much as we can for Allah loves those who praise Him in words worthy of His status. This supplication also instills in our faith the conviction that none other than Allah can help or harm us. Therefore, we must never bow in front of the worldly masters for they too are nothing but the blessings bestowed upon them by Allah.
May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

The Power of true faith induces strength to face demagogues without fear of retribution

The power of true faith solidifies one's heart and braves to face even the worst consequences for the reward of their steadfastness rests with none other than our true Lord. Prophet Moses (Musa, peace be upon him) like all many other prophets was faced with the anger and wrath of the Pharoah when the revered prophet called the arrogant king to the true path. Yet, despite his machination, not only Prophet Moses, but others around him who saw power of true faith oozing out of him, accepted the faith without caring from the retribution of Pharoah.

Verses 109-126 of Surah 7. Al A'raf tells us the story of Moses' confrontation with the magicians of Pharaoh and when their magic could not tame Prophet Moses, they fell in prostration, saying: 'We believe in the Lord of the universe. Such is the strength that true faith induces in a man to face even the worst demagogues and tyrant rulers. We have already explained the exegesis of these verses in Part III of the exegesis of Surah Al A'raf.

Herein under, we share the 126th verse of the Surah in which the magicians supplicated to Allah to shower of them the Divine perseverance and to cause them to die as those who have submitted to one true Lord of the world. Although, the explanation of the verse mainly hinges on the part of the story of the the magicians, the purpose of sharing this verse is to let our brothers and sisters in Islam know the strength of the true faith and how it laces with them conviction and strength to face the tyrants without caring for the retribution. If such strength of character is developed, no one can harm us no matter how powerful, mighty and resourceful our adversary may be.

(7:126) Will you punish us just because we believed in the signs of our Lord when they came to us? Our Lord! Shower us with perseverance and cause us to die as those who have submitted [to You].'
When Pharaoh saw the tables turning on himself, he thought out another device. He declared that the whole show was the outcome of the plot that Moses and the magicians had devised. Then he threatened the magicians with a severe chastisement and death so that they should confess that his accusation was true. But this move also turned against him. As the magicians remained firm in their new Faith, and were prepared to undergo any torture for its sake, it became evident that their belief in the Truth presented by Moses was a genuine confession of faith and not the pretense of any plot. That is why he had to give up the pretense of truth and justice and resort to open tyranny.

In this connection it should also be noted that in a few moments, their Faith had brought about a wonderful change in the character of the magicians. The same people who had left their homes for the sake of helping the religion of their forefathers and had, a few minutes before, very humbly requested Pharaoh to give them rewards if they came out successful in the conflict with Moses, were now filled with the courage of conviction of the true Faith. They had become so bold and brave that they were now defying the same king, before whom they were meekly bowing, and begging a reward for their encounter. But now they had become so convinced of the truth of their Faith that they were not ready to give it up for the fear of the worst torture with which they were being threatened.

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir:
The magicians said (verse 125), ( إِنَّآ إِلَى رَبِّنَا مُنقَلِبُونَ ("Verily, we are returning to our Lord.'') They said, `We are now sure that we will go back to Allah. Certainly, Allah's punishment is more severe than your punishment and His torment for what you are calling us to, this day, and the magic you forced us to practice, is greater than your torment. Therefore, we will observe patience in the face of your punishment today, so that we are saved from Allah's torment.'

They continued, (رَبَّنَآ أَفْرِغْ عَلَيْنَا صَبْرًا ("Our Lord! pour out on us patience''), with your religion and being firm in it, (وَتَوَفَّنَا مُسْلِمِينَ "and cause us to die as Muslims.''), as followers of Your Prophet Musa, peace be upon him. They also said to Fir`awn,

("So, decide whatever you desire to decree, for you can only decide for the life of this world. Verily, we have believed in our Lord, that He may forgive us our faults, and the magic to which you did compel us. And Allah is better ﴿to reward﴾ and more lasting ﴿in punishment﴾. Verily, whoever comes to his Lord as a criminal, then surely, for him is Hell, wherein he will neither die nor live. But whoever comes to Him (Allah) as a believer, and has done righteous good deeds, for such are the high ranks (in the Hereafter).) [20:72-75]

The magicians started the day as sorcerers and ended as honorable martyrs! Ibn `Abbas, `Ubayd bin `Umayr, Qatadah and Ibn Jurayj commented, "They started the day as sorcerers and ended it as martyrs.'

Yusuf Ali Explanation:
These Egyptians, by their patience and constancy, show that their repentance was true. Thus, in their case the mission of Moses was fulfilled directly, and their number must have amounted to a considerable figure. They were martyrs to their faith, and their martyrdom affected their nation in two ways. In the first place, as they were the pick of those who practised magic in Egypt, their conversion and disappearance dealt a staggering blow to the whole system. Secondly, the indirect effect of their martyrdom on the commonalty of Egypt must have been far greater than can be measured by numbers. The banner of Allah was planted, and the silent spiritual fight must have gone on ever since, though history, in recording outward events, is silent on the slow and gradual processes of transformation undergone by Egyptian religion. From a chaotic pantheon of animals and animal gods, the worship of the sun and the heavenly bodies, and the worship of the Pharaoh as the embodiment of power, they gradually came to realise the oneness and mercy of the true God. After many glimpses of Monotheism on Egyptian soil itself, the (gospel of Jesus reached them, and eventually Islam.)

Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Explanation:
It can be gauged from these words what true faith can do: how it can make a person rise high in the blink of an eye. Imām Amīn Aḥsan Iṣlāḥī writes:

... These are the same magicians whose meanness and faintheartedness were such that just a few minutes before, for displaying their skill, they requested for a handsome reward from the Pharaoh like jesters and mimmicers. And now as soon as faith entered their hearts, every portion of their inner self started to dazzle in such a manner that it seems that darkness never enveloped their hearts and that they are not ordinary mortals but are actually paragons of steadfastness and determination and as noble and pure as the angels. One can see how big a threat the Pharaoh sounded; but their answer was that they are not the slightest bothered if the Pharaoh has their hands and feet severed and crucifies them as this will only take them to God. They challenged the Pharaoh to do whatever he likes since his wrath on them is because of their crime of believing in their Lords signs when they have come to them. If this was the punishment of this crime, they would welcome it. (Amīn Aḥsan Iṣlāḥī, Tadabbur-i Qur’ān, vol. 3, 348)

Etiquettes of collective life

It has been emphasized many a times before in our posts that Islam is not only a mere religion, but it is a Deen - that it is a complete code of life. Besides guidance to walk on the straight path, a path that leads to the ultimate salvation, it also teaches man ethics and etiquettes to live a life by caring for others first than meeting one's own requirements and priorities. Islam also teaches man how his behaviour should be when he is in the company of elders and society or community as a whole.

The 11th verse of Surah 58. Al-Mujadila (The Pleading Woman) is one such Divine Commandment stressing upon the etiquettes of sitting in a gathering. Many scholars are also of the view that this etiquette should also be applied to our collective life in every sphere.

(58:11) Believers, when you are told: “Make room for one another in your assemblies,” then make room; Allah will bestow amplitude on you. And when it is said: “Rise up,” then rise up; Allah will raise to high ranks those of you who believe and are endowed with knowledge. Allah is well aware of all that you do.

The explanation of the abovesaid verse by one of the most competent Muslim scholars Ibn Kathir is very elaborate. For this very reason, it is not being shared here as readers may find this post to be very lengthy. Those interested to consult Ibn Kathir explanation may open the reference page: Ibn-Kathir Al-Qur'an Tafsir, Surah 58. Al-Mujadila . Ayah 11.

Muhammad Asad Explanation:
(O YOU who have attained faith! When you are told, "Make room for one another in your collective life") Lit., "in the assemblies (al-majalis)". Although it is frequently assumed that this refers to the assemblies held by the Prophet, when his followers would throng around him in their eagerness the better to hear what he had to say, or - more generally - to congregations in mosques, etc., in later times, I am (with Razi) of the opinion that the plural noun majalis is used here in a tropical or metaphorical sense, denoting the totality of men's social life. Taken in this sense, "making room for one another" implies the mutual providing of opportunities for a decent life to all - and especially to the needy or handicapped - members of the community. See also the next note.

(Do make room: [and in return,] God will make room for you [in His grace].) Commenting on this passage, Razi says: "This verse indicates that if one widens the means (abwab) of happiness and well-being of God's creatures ('ibad), God will widen for him all that is good in this life and in the hereafter. Hence, no reasonable person (al-'aqil) could ever restrict [the purport of] this verse to merely making room for one another in an [actual] assembly."

(And whenever you are told, "Rise up [for a good deed]", do rise up;) The interpretation implied in the words "for a good deed" interpolated by me above is analogous to that offered by most of the classical commentators, and most explicitly by Tabari; in the words of Qatadah (ibid.), "Whenever you are called upon to do a good deed, respond to this call."

([and] God will exalt by [many] degrees those of you who have attained to faith and, [above all,] such as have been vouchsafed [true] knowledge:) Cf. the saying of the Prophet: "The superiority of a learned man ('alim) over a [mere] worshipper ('abid) is like the superiority of the moon on the night when it is full over all other stars" (Ibn Hanbal, Abu Da'ud, Tirmidhi, Nasa'i, Ibn Majah and Darimi).

Explaining the meaning of the abose said verse, Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi is of the opinion:
This has been explained in the Introduction to the Surah above. Some commentators regard this Command as restricted to the assemblies of the Holy Prophet (upon whom be Allah's peace). But as pointed out by Imam Malik, the correct view is that this is a general instruction for the assemblies held by the Muslims. One of the rules of etiquette taught by Allah and His Messenger to the Muslims is that when they are sitting in an assembly and some more people arrive, they should have the courtesy to accommodate the new-comers and should squeeze in together as far as possible to make room for them to sit. The newcomers also should have the courtesy not to press in forcibly and make others rise up in order to take their place. In the Hadith Hadrat 'Abdullah bin 'Umar and Hadrat Abu Hurairah have reported that the Holy Prophet said: Nobody should make another person rise up so as to take his place, but you should yourself make room for others. " (Musnad Ahmad Bukhari Muslim). And Hadrat `Abdullah bin `Amr bin 'As reports that the Holy Prophet said: "It is not lawful for a person that he should forcibly press in between two men except by their leave." (Musnad Ahmad, Abu Da 'ud, Tirmidhi).
'Abdur Rahman bin Zaid bin Aslam stated that the people used to prolong their sitting in the Holy Prophet's assemblies and tried to sit till the end. This caused him inconvenience and discomfort as well as hindrance in his daily chores. At this Allah sent down this Command, teaching the people the etiquette: `When you are told to rise up froth the assembly, you should rise up and disperse." (Ibn Jarir, Ibn Kathir).
"You should not think that if in the Holy Prophet's assembly, you had to sit a little farther away from him for the sake of making room for others, you would be reduced in rank or if you were asked to rise up and disperse from the assembly, you were disgraced. The real means of exaltation of ranks is faith and knowledge, and not an opportunity to sit nearest to the Holy Prophet (upon whom be Allah's peace) in his assembly and sit the longest. If a person happened to sit nearer to him, it does not mean that he became exalted in rank, for the high ranks belong only to those who have attained the wealth of knowledge and faith. Likewise, the person who prolonged his sitting with the Holy Prophet only to cause him inconvenience and discomfort, in fact, displayed a lack of good manners. His sitting near him for a long; time will not exalt him in rank in any way. Far higher and exalted in rank in the sight of Allah is he who attained to taste faith and knowledge and imbibed the morals that should belong to a believer.
Yusuf Ali Explanation
Even when a great man or a Leader comes into an Assembly, we are not to press forward without discipline, as it causes inconvenience to him and detriment to public business. Nor are we to shut out other people who have equal rights to be in the Assembly. We must spread out, for Allah's earth is spacious, and so are our opportunities.

"Rise up" here may imply: 'when the Assembly is dismissed, do not loiter about'.

Faith makes all people equal in the Kingdom of Allah, as regards the essentials of citizenship in the Kingdom. But there is leadership, and rank and degree, joined with greater or less responsibility, and that depends on true knowledge and insight.
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān.
