A true believer observes zakah (Traits of Believers who attain true success)

One of the many characteristics of a believer which are central to the teachings of Islam is Purity. Islam lays immense emphasis on observance of purity both physical, that is the bodily purity, as well as the spiritual purity. For bodily purity, the best action of a believer is the ablution before each prayer, five times a day. In addition, it is obligatory for every husband and wife to take a full bath after mating. Why I mentioned husband and wife is for the reason that in Islam there is no concept of intimate relation between man and woman unless they are married. 

Likewise, for spiritual cleansing and purity, one has to establish prayer and abstain from what is vain and frivolous. These two characteristics of a believer save him from any evil thoughts and keep on the straight path, as envisioned for him by Allah and spelt out in Qur'an. 

There is yet another kind of purity which a beleiver must ensure is to pay a laid down amount deducted from his annual income and harvest and dole it out to the poor and needy. 

All three types of purities mention above are called Zakah in Islam. This is the third characteristic of a beleiver which if abided by wholeheartedly and with complete sincerity will attain success for him. This is mentioned in the fourth verse of Surah 23. Al-Muminun الۡمُؤۡمِنُوۡنَۙ (The Believers), explained in detail herein under:

وَالَّذِيۡنَ هُمۡ لِلزَّكٰوةِ فَاعِلُوۡنَۙ‏ 
(23:4) And they who are observant of zakāh;
The word Zakat literally means purification and development-to help something grow tip smoothly and develop without obstruction. As an Islamic term, it implies both the portion of wealth taken out for the purpose of purifying the rest of wealth and the act of purification itself. The words of the original Text mean that the Believer constantly practices purification. Thus, the meaning is not confined to the paying off of Zakat dues only but it is extended to self-purification which includes purification of morals as well as wealth, property and life in general. Then it does not mean purification of one's own self, but includes the purification of the lives of other people as well. So, the verse means: "The Believers are the people who purify themselves as well as others." This thing has been stated at other places in the Qur'an -also, for instance: "Successful is he who practiced -purification and remembered his Lord and prayed." (LXXXVII: 1415), and: "Successful is he who purified himself and failure is he who corrupted it." (XCI: 9-10). But this verse is more comprehensive in meaning because it stresses the purification of both society and one's own person.

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir
(And those who pay the Zakah.) Most commentators say that the meaning here is the Zakah that is paid on wealth, even though this Ayah was revealed in Makkah, and Zakah was ordained in Al-Madinah in the year 2 H. The apparent meaning is that the Zakah that was instituted in Al-Madinah is the one based upon the Nusub and the specific amounts, apart from which it seems that the basic principle of Zakah was enjoined in Makkah. As Allah says in Surat Al-An`am, which was also revealed in Makkah:

(وَءَاتُواْ حَقَّهُ يَوْمَ حَصَادِهِ But pay the due thereof on the day of their harvest,) [6:141] It could be that what is meant here by Zakah is purification of the soul from Shirk and filth, as in the Ayah:

(قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّـهَا - وَقَدْ خَابَ مَن دَسَّـهَا Indeed he succeeds who purifies himself (Zakkaha). And indeed, he fails who corrupts himself.) [91:9-10] It could be that both meanings are intended, purification of the soul and of one's wealth, because that is part of the purification of the soul, and the true believer is one who pays attention to both matters. And Allah knows best.

Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Explanation:
Zakāh refers to that wealth which is given to meet the needs of the collectivity at God’s behest to please Him. Like prayer, it has always existed in the religion of the prophets. Thus, the addressees of the Qur’ān knew what it meant. It was not something alien to them so that its rates and exemptions were stated. They knew all these things just as they were aware of the rituals and utterances of the prayer. It is evident from the Qur’ān that it forms a pair with zakāh. While the prayer links a person to God, zakāh links him to his fellow human beings. Both these things are necessary for the success mentioned in this verse.

Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:
Having come forward to declare their submission to God and demonstrate this in their prayer, and having turned away from all that is frivolous, true believers complement this by being active in charity. The term used in Arabic for charity is zakāt, but this word is often used in a wider sense that goes far beyond the obligatory financial worship with which it is normally associated. Such charity purifies man’s heart and money. It purges hearts of selfishness and greed, and overcomes Satan’s whispers of discouragement as he raises before us the specter of poverty, and demonstrates our trust in God. It also makes our money, or what is left of it, pure and good, free of all obligations and doubts concerning its being lawful. Furthermore, charity protects the Muslim community against the imbalance that results from the extremes of poverty on the one side and affluence on the other. It provides social security for all individuals in the Muslim community, particularly the weaker elements, and it protects the community against disintegration.

So, my brothers and sisters in Islam, ensure observance of humbleness in your prayers, abstain from what is vain and frivolous and observe zakah of all three categories mentioned in the premise and explained thereafter. May Allah help us attain the promised success by adhering to the requirements as mentioned above and others that we will share in due course. Ameen.
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 
وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

A true believer avoids whatever is vain and frivolous (Traits of Believers who attain true success)

This is our third post on the series of Posts: "Traits of believers who attain Success."  In one of our previous posts, we mentioned the first trait, that is humbleness in prayers, of the believers who attain success. It is the humbleness and humility in prayers that brings a beleiver closer to Allah and the connection between the Master and the servant by and by becomes so strong and solidified that the mind of the servant gradually clears of the vain and frivolous thoughts. That is, he becomes a worshipper of God and bows down before Him in submission.  His sincerity and seriousness increase to the extent that wasting time in useless pursuits appears fatal to him.

And this is the trait of the beleiver mentioned in the third verse of Surah 23. Al-Muminun الۡمُؤۡمِنُوۡنَۙ (The Believers) being discussed today in this post:

وَالَّذِيۡنَ هُمۡ عَنِ اللَّغۡوِ مُعۡرِضُوۡنَۙ‏ 
(23:3) who avoid whatever is vain and frivolous;
Literally, laghv is anything nonsensical, meaningless and vain, which is in no way conducive to achieving one's goal and purpose in life. The Believers pay no heed to such useless things and they show no inclination or interest in them. If by chance they see such things being indulged in, they keep away and avoid them scrupulously, or treat them with utmost indifference. This attitude has been described in Al-Furqan (XXV): 72, thus: " ... if they have to pass by what is vain, they pass by like dignified people."

This is indeed one of the outstanding characteristics of the Believer. He is a person who feels the burden of responsibility at all times; he regards the world as a place of test, and life as the limited time allowed for the test. This feeling makes him behave seriously and responsibly throughout life just like the student who is taking an examination paper with his whole mind and body and soul absorbed in it. Just as the student knows and feels that each moment of the limited time at his disposal is important and decisive for his future life, and is not inclined to waste it, so the Believer also spends each moment of his life on works which are useful and productive in their ultimate results. So much so that even in matters of recreation and sport, he makes a choice of only those things which prepare him for higher ends in life and do not result in mere wastage of time. For him time is not something to be killed but used profitably and productively.

Besides this, the Believer is a person who possesses a right-thinking mind, pure nature and fine taste: he has no inclination to indecent things: he can talk useful and healthy things but cannot indulge in idle talk: he has a fine taste of humor, but is not given to jesting, joking, ridicule, etc. nor can he endure dirty jokes and fun. For him a society in which the ears are never immune from abusive language, back-biting, slander, lying, dirty songs and indecent talk is a source of torture and agony. A characteristic of the promised Paradise is: "therein you will not hear anything vain or useless."  

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir
(And those who turn away from Al-Laghw.) refers to falsehood, which includes Shirk and sin, and any words or deeds that are of no benefit. 

As Allah says: (وَإِذَا مَرُّواْ بِاللَّغْوِ مَرُّواْ كِراماً And if they pass by Al-Laghw, they pass by it with dignity) [25:72]. Qatadah said: "By Allah, there came to them from Allah that which kept them away from that (evil).'

Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Explanation:
The word is: اللَّغْو. It is used for every act that is nonsensical, silly and purposeless. The implication is that believers abstain from things that have no objective and which have no consequence in the life of a person, not to speak of big sins. This, in a passing way, also refers to those frivolous acts which emanated from the disbelievers against Islam and the Muslims. Thus, at another instance it is said that when believers hear something nonsensical, they ignore it and tell their addresses that for their own selves are their deeds and for them their deeds. In other words, they neither indulge in ridiculous things nor engage with those who indulge in them.

Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:
This includes all frivolity, in words, actions, or concerns. A believer’s heart has its own preoccupations which steer it away from frivolity. It is full with the remembrance of God and with reflection on His majesty and His signs that we see everywhere in the universe and within ourselves. Indeed, every scene in the universe fills our minds with wonder and gives a clear message to our hearts. Moreover, the duties required by faith keep a believer preoccupied with maintaining the purity of his or her heart, soul and conscience. Believers’ duties include those of behaviour which aim at maintaining the very high standards required by faith. Moreover, the task of enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong aims at preventing any deviation in the life of the Muslim community.

This does not preclude relaxation and seeking comfort when it is needed. But this is totally different from indulging in frivolous and idle pursuits.

In view of the above quoted verse, my brothers and sisters in Islam, let us review our daily routine and see for ourselves how much time we waste away in things that are non-essential or are of least benefit to us. Take for example time spent on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and all other forms of social media and quantify the benefit vs wastage of time. And in many cases, we will find that we waste time by surfing through social media and gain no substantial benefit. If instead we devote time on sites that educate us on various facets of life as spelt out in Qur'an and Hadiths/Sunnah, imagine the benefit we gain both by enhancing our knowledge base of Islam but also equipping us with knowledge to educate others. 

Why not share this post to groups you have joined on social media so that others are educated not to waste time and spend time usefully which is beneficial not for us but others as well.

Allah promises great reward for believers backing and helping another believer (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

Islam lays immense emphasis on helping each other's, especially when one brother is in distress and needs a shoulder to lean on. The concept of all forms of charities, obligatory and voluntary, aim at helping those who are destitute and blessed lesser than others in means of sustenance. In one of his Hadiths, already, shared earlier, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasized the need of helping the specially the widows and the poor, saying: "The one who looks after a widow or a poor person is like a Mujahid (warrior) who fights for Allah's Cause, or like him who performs prayers all the night and fasts all the day."

In the same context, we share another, rather long, hadith of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in which he conveys the Divine promise for helping and backing others in difficult times. 

This Hadith is quoted in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: Book (#48) Pertaining to the Remembrance of Allah, Supplication, Repentance and Seeking Forgiveness - كتاب الذكر والدعاء والتوبة والاستغفار   / Chapter # 11 The Virtue of Gathering to Read Quran and To Remember Allah /(11)باب فَضْلِ الاِجْتِمَاعِ عَلَى تِلاَوَةِ الْقُرْآنِ وَعَلَى الذِّكْرِ‏‏‏) as Hadith number # 2699a as under:

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى التَّمِيمِيُّ، وَأَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَلاَءِ الْهَمْدَانِيُّ - وَاللَّفْظُ لِيَحْيَى - قَالَ يَحْيَى أَخْبَرَنَا وَقَالَ الآخَرَانِ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ "‏ مَنْ نَفَّسَ عَنْ مُؤْمِنٍ كُرْبَةً مِنْ كُرَبِ الدُّنْيَا نَفَّسَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ كُرْبَةً مِنْ كُرَبِ يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ وَمَنْ يَسَّرَ عَلَى مُعْسِرٍ يَسَّرَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالآخِرَةِ وَمَنْ سَتَرَ مُسْلِمًا سَتَرَهُ اللَّهُ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالآخِرَةِ وَاللَّهُ فِي عَوْنِ الْعَبْدِ مَا كَانَ الْعَبْدُ فِي عَوْنِ أَخِيهِ وَمَنْ سَلَكَ طَرِيقًا يَلْتَمِسُ فِيهِ عِلْمًا سَهَّلَ اللَّهُ لَهُ بِهِ طَرِيقًا إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ وَمَا اجْتَمَعَ قَوْمٌ فِي بَيْتٍ مِنْ بُيُوتِ اللَّهِ يَتْلُونَ كِتَابَ اللَّهِ وَيَتَدَارَسُونَهُ بَيْنَهُمْ إِلاَّ نَزَلَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ السَّكِينَةُ وَغَشِيَتْهُمُ الرَّحْمَةُ وَحَفَّتْهُمُ الْمَلاَئِكَةُ وَذَكَرَهُمُ اللَّهُ فِيمَنْ عِنْدَهُ وَمَنْ بَطَّأَ بِهِ عَمَلُهُ لَمْ يُسْرِعْ بِهِ نَسَبُهُ ‏"‏ ‏.

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:
"He who alleviates the suffering of a brother out of the sufferings of the world, Allah would alleviate his suffering from the sufferings of the Day of Resurrection, and he who finds relief for one who is hard-pressed, Allah would make things easy for him in the Hereafter, and he who conceals (the faults) of a Muslim, Allah would conceal his faults in the world and in the Hereafter. Allah is at the back of a servant so long as the servant is at the back of his brother, and he who treads the path in search of knowledge, Allah would make that path easy, leading to Paradise for him and those persons who assemble in the house among the houses of Allah (mosques) and recite the Book of Allah and they learn and teach the Qur'an (among themselves) there would descend upon them tranquility and mercy would cover them and the angels would surround them and Allah mentions them in the presence of those near Him, and he who is slow-paced in doing good deeds, his (high) lineage does not make him go ahead.‏"

Just note how much Allah rewards those who help others and promises "Allah is at the back of a servant so long as the servant is at the back of his brother." This is a great promise and a great reward that Allah has made. This is the essence of all teachings of Islam: Peace and helping others. Those who help others are the blessed ones. But those who have the means to help others and yet keep their hands tight are losers not only in this world but the Hereafter as well.

A true believer humbles himself in his prayers (Traits of Believers who attain true success)

In our previous post we described "Traits of believers who attain success," as explained in the first verse of Surah 23. Al-Muminun الۡمُؤۡمِنُوۡنَۙ (The Believers). It was also mentioned that following verses, from verses 2-9, describe the characteristics of these successful believers. Now from this post onward, we will take each characteristic one by one and see how a believer can achieve success.

We share today the second verse of Surah 23. Al-Muminun in which it is said that those who humble themselves in their prayers are one of those who are promised success not only in this world, but in the Hereafter too:

الَّذِيۡنَ هُمۡ فِىۡ صَلَاتِهِمۡ خَاشِعُوۡنَ ۙ‏ 
(23:2) those who, in their Prayers, humble themselves;
Khashi`un (خَاشِعُوۡنَ) in the Text is from khushu (to bow down, to express humility) which is a condition of the heart as well as of the body. Khushu' of the heart is to fear and stand in awe of a powerful person, and khushu ` of the body is to bow one's head and lower one's gaze and voice in his presence. In Salat one is required to show khushu ` both of the heart and of the body, and this is the essence of the Prayer. It has been reported that when the Holy Prophet once saw a person offering his Prayer as well as playing with his beard, he remarked: "Had he khushu ` in his heart, his body would have manifested it. "
Though Khushu ` is actually a condition of the heart, as stated by the above tradition, it is manifested by the body as a matter of course. The Shari `ah has enjoined certain etiquette which, on the one hand, helps produce khushu ` in the heart, and on the other, helps sustain the physical act of the Prayer in spite of the fluctuating condition of the heart. According to this etiquette, one should neither turn to the right or left, nor raise one's head to look up: one may, however, look around from the corner of the eye, but as far as possible, one must fix the gaze on the place where the forehead would rest in prostration; one is also forbidden to shift about, incline sideways, fold the garments or shake off dust from them. It is also forbidden that while going down for prostration, one should clean the place where one would sit or perform prostration. Similarly, it is disrespectful that one should stand stuffy erect, recite the verses of the Qur'an in a loud resounding voice, or sing them, or belch or yawn repeatedly and noisily. It has also not been approved that one should offer the Prayer in a hurry. The injunction is that each article of the Prayer should be performed in perfect peace and tranquility, and unless one article has been completely performed, the next should not be begun. If one feels hurt by something during the Prayer, one may cast it aside with one hand, but moving the hand repeatedly or using both hands for the purpose is prohibited. With this etiquette of the body, it is also important that one should irrelevant things during the Prayer. If thoughts come to the mind intention, it is a natural human weakness, but one should try one's

Along avoid thinking without one's utmost that the mind and heart are wholly turned towards Allah, and the mind is in full harmony and tune with the tongue, and as soon as one becomes conscious of irrelevant thoughts one should immediately turn the attention to the Prayer.

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir
(الَّذِينَ هُمْ فِى صَلاَتِهِمْ خَـشِعُونَ Those who with their Salah are Khashi`un.) `Ali bin Abi Talhah reported that Ibn `Abbas said: "(خَـشِعُونَ Khashi`un) means those with fear and with tranquility.'' This was also narrated by Mujahid, Al-Hasan, Qatadah and Az-Zuhri. It was reported from `Ali bin Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, that Khushu` means the Khushu` of the heart. This was also the view of Ibrahim An-Nakha`i. Al-Hasan Al-Basri said, "Their Khushu` was in their hearts.' So, they lowered their gaze and were humble towards others. Khushu` in prayer is only attained by the one who has emptied his heart totally, who does not pay attention to anything else besides it, and who prefers it above all else. 

At that point it becomes a delight and a joy for eyes, as in the Hadith recorded by Imam Ahmad and An-Nasa'i from Anas, who said that the Messenger of Allah said: (حُبِّبَ إِلَيَّ الطِّيبُ وَالنِّسَاءُ، وَجُعِلَتْ قُرَّةُ عَيْنِي فِي الصَّلَاة Fragrance and women have been made dear to me, and Salah was made the joy of my eye.)

Yusuf Ali Explanation
Humility in prayer as regards (1) their estimate of their own worth in Allah's presence, (2) as regards their estimate of their own powers or strength unless they are helped by Allah, and (3) as regards the petitions they offer to Allah.

Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Explanation:
 Ie., they express obedience, humility and modesty before their Lord. This is precisely the essence of the prayer. If it is present in the prayer, a person feels that not only his back and head, but also his heart has bowed down before God.

Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:
“Who humble themselves in their prayer.” They feel the reverence associated with prayer, as they stand up to address God, and their hearts are thus filled with awe, which is, in turn, reflected in their features and movements. Their spirits feel God’s majesty as they realize that they stand in His presence. Thus, all their preoccupations and distractions disappear. Their thoughts and feelings are all concentrated on their discourse with Him. In His sublime presence, they are heedless of all their surroundings. They see and feel nothing but His majesty. Their minds and hearts are purged of even the slightest alien thought or feeling. In such a situation, a stray atom is reunited with its source, a wandering spirit finds its way, and a heart that has been long in isolation finds its company. Thus, all values, concerns and considerations diminish, except for the ones that are related to God in some way.

So let, my brothers and sisters in Islam, take the first step to success by ensuring humility when we stand in front the Lord of the entire Universe and the Lord of the world in the Hereafter and humble ourselves to its extreme so as to show our gratitude to Allah for His countless blessings on us, the most blessed blessing being including us in the fold of Islam and to be proudly called Muslims.

When a believer becomes a worshipper of God and bows down before Him in submission.  His sincerity and seriousness increase to the extent that wasting time in useless pursuits appears fatal to him. (Staying away from the useless and wasting time in activities that take him away from remembrance of Allah and interfere with his humility while praying is the second attribute, explained in the third verse of the Surah, and will be explained in one of our next posts).
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 
وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Traits of Believers who attain true success

We have been sharing traits of a Muslim and a believer, as mentioned in Qur'an and Hadiths, in our number of posts published earlier. Today, we commence another series of posts exclusive to Traits of a Believer, who attain true success. These traits are mentioned in Surah 23. Al-Muminun الۡمُؤۡمِنُوۡنَۙ (The Believers). The Surah commences with the opener "قَدۡ اَفۡلَحَ الۡمُؤۡمِنُوۡنَۙ‏ (23:1) The believers have indeed attained true success." Then in succeeding verses, it is explained who are those who have attained success.

The noble characteristics of the Believers pointed out in verses 2-9 are the arguments to prove the assertion made in verse 1 as mentioned above. In other words, it has been stated that people with such and such traits and qualities are the only ones who can attain true success in this world and in the Hereafter.

Let us first explain the first verse that mentions who are the Believers who have attained success:
"Believers", who have attained true success, are those who have accepted the Message of Muhammad (Allah's peace be upon him), and have acknowledged him as their guide and followed the way of life taught by him.

This assertion cannot be fully appreciated unless one keeps in view the background in which it was made. On the one hand, there were the well-to-do and prosperous chiefs of Makkah, the opponents of Islam, whose business was thriving and who were enjoying every good thing of life, and on the other hand, there were the followers of Islam majority of whom were either poor from the beginning, or had been reduced to poverty by ruthless antagonism to Islam. Therefore, the assertion, "Most certainly the Believers have attained true success", with which the discourse begins, was meant to tell the disbelievers that the criterion of success and failure that they had in mind was not correct. It was based on misconceptions besides being transitory and limited in nature: it led to failure and not true success. On the contrary, the followers of Muhammad (Allah's peace be upon him), whom they regarded as failures, were truly successful, because by accepting the invitation to the Right Guidance given by the Messenger of Allah, they had struck a bargain which would lead them to true success and everlasting bliss in this world as well as in the Hereafter, whereas by rejecting the Message the opponents had incurred loss and would meet with the evil consequences both in this world and in the next.

This is the main theme of the Surah Al-Muminun and the whole discourse, from the beginning to the end, is meant to impress the same. 

Yusuf Ali in his translation notes that Aflaha (اَفۡلَحَ) means win through, prosper, succeed, achieve their aims or obtain salvation from sorrow and all evil. This verse connects with verses 10 and 11. Success or victory may come in this world, but it is certain and lasting in the world to come.

Tafsir Qur'an Wiki: It is a true promise; nay, it is a firm decision ensuring success for the believers. If we take it as a promise, we know God never fails to honour His promises; and if we say that it is His decision, then no one can ever foil a decision by God. What is promised is success in the life of this world and in the life to come; success for the individual believer and for the community of believers. A believer will feel this success in his heart and will see it coming true in his day-to-day life. The success God promises includes all that human beings associate with success and what God keeps in store for His faithful servants.

In other words, "Success is for one who is a true believer, one who devotes himself fully to God and not to anybody other than God and who leads a God-oriented life.  Realization of God is not a simple matter.  It brings about a revolution in the life of a person.  He becomes a worshipper of God and bows down before Him in submission."

So, who are those faithful servants, the believers who receive this document written by God, containing this promise and a clear declaration of success? Who are the believers promised all goodness, victory, happiness, success and goodly provisions in this life on earth; and further promised to be successful in the hereafter, when they receive God’s reward and enjoy His pleasure? They will also have much more that is known only to God, and this will be given in their two lives. Who are these believers who will inherit paradise where they will abide?

Reward of Preserving the Prayer Times (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

It has been obligatory upon every adult / sane Muslim man and woman to regularly offer their obligatory prayers five times a day. Since it is a Divine obligation, no one is excused from offering the obligatory prayers (that is Fard only). If someone cannot stand and pray as the practicing norm is, one may sit on a chair and even if that is not possible, one may lie down and pray. 

The only excuse is that if someone is insane and mentally not stable who has no control over his actions. Even during travel, there is no excuse from obligatory prayers. However, due to hazards of travel, the obligatory cycles (Fard) have been allowed to be offered in half, except the Maghrib (evening) prayer, which remain three as otherwise.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has emphasized many a times that the prayers must be offered at the appointed times of given time bracket, but as early as possible. This carries great reward as promised by Allah (سبحانه و تعالى‎).

This Hadith is mentioned in Sunan Abi Dawud (Book # 2 Prayer (Kitab Al-Salat): كتاب الصيام / Chapter # 158 Preserving the Prayer Times / باب فِي الْمُحَافَظَةِ عَلَى وَقْتِ الصَّلَوَاتِ ) as Hadith number # 425, quoted herein under:

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ الْوَاسِطِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ، - يَعْنِي ابْنَ هَارُونَ - حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُطَرِّفٍ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الصُّنَابِحِيِّ، قَالَ زَعَمَ أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ أَنَّ الْوِتْرَ، وَاجِبٌ، فَقَالَ عُبَادَةُ بْنُ الصَّامِتِ كَذَبَ أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ أَشْهَدُ أَنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ ‏ "‏ خَمْسُ صَلَوَاتٍ افْتَرَضَهُنَّ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى مَنْ أَحْسَنَ وُضُوءَهُنَّ وَصَلاَّهُنَّ لِوَقْتِهِنَّ وَأَتَمَّ رُكُوعَهُنَّ وَخُشُوعَهُنَّ كَانَ لَهُ عَلَى اللَّهِ عَهْدٌ أَنْ يَغْفِرَ لَهُ وَمَنْ لَمْ يَفْعَلْ فَلَيْسَ لَهُ عَلَى اللَّهِ عَهْدٌ إِنْ شَاءَ غَفَرَ لَهُ وَإِنْ شَاءَ عَذَّبَهُ ‏"‏ ‏.

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Sunabihi:
Abu Muhammad fancies that witr prayer is essential. (Hearing this) Ubadah ibn as-Samit said: Abu Muhammad was wrong. I bear witness that I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: Allah, the Exalted, has made five prayers obligatory. If anyone performs ablution for them well, offers them at their (right) time, and observes perfectly their bowing and submissiveness in them, it is the guarantee of Allah that He will pardon him; if anyone does not do so, there is no guarantee for him on the part of Allah; He may pardon him if He wills, and punish him if He wills.
Grade: Sahih (Al-Albani):  حكم صحيح  (الألباني) 

The essence of the above quoted Hadith is:
  • Performing ablution as best as possible, ensuring no part of the body which is to be washed as obligatory is left dried.
  • Offering the prayer at the right time, preferably in a masjid in congregation
  • Focusing on pleasing Allah all the time and not as a show off for others.
  • If these conditions are fulfilled, Allah guarantees his pardon.

Revert Experience of Najla Tammy Kepler who found answers to her queries in Islam

Searching for unique revert experience often leads me some of the awe-inspiring experiences that solidify my own faith, though being a born Muslim. It is awfully strange that how those who have had no knowledge of Islam, get attracted to a new faith that never entered in their life before. 

Najla explains her revert experience in a video shared on YouTube which we are sharing for the benefit of our viewers, especially those who have seen the light of truth in Islam and have not made their mind as yet to make their ultimate decision of their lives. Remember, mere listening to others about Islam, which may include tainted views, one must carry out one's own research of Islam by reading books and Qur'an and listening to revert experiences of those who have already embraced Islam. Once one makes a sincere effort, Allah shows them the wisdom to understand the truth.

Grave consequences for those who take false oath to unlawfully take the right of another Muslim

We are passing through some very dangerous times for many a Muslim are taking false oaths or using illegal means to take over rights of other Muslims. Unfortunately, this is happening both at individual, family, community and even at government levels. The cause of such unlawful acts is our distancing from the clear commandments of Allah as mentioned in Qur'an and many a Hadith of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. We seem oblivious of the grave consequences that await us for the helplessness of the ones who are deprived of their rights do not go unnoticed by the Lord of the worlds. Many tyrants will be punished right in this world, while many more will see the doors of paradise closing for them and doors of hell wide opened to welcome them for their dishonest worldly life.

This Hadith is quoted in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: Book (#1) of Faith - كتاب الإيمان   / Chapter # 61 Warning of the Fire for the one who swears a false oath in order to unlawfully take the right of another Muslim / باب وَعِيدِ مَنِ اقْتَطَعَ حَقَّ مُسْلِمٍ بِيَمِينٍ فَاجِرَةٍ بِالنَّارِ ‏‏‏) as Hadith number # 137a as under:

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ، وَقُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، وَعَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ، جَمِيعًا عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ، - قَالَ ابْنُ أَيُّوبَ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، - قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا الْعَلاَءُ، - وَهُوَ ابْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ مَوْلَى الْحُرَقَةِ - عَنْ مَعْبَدِ بْنِ كَعْبٍ السَّلَمِيِّ، عَنْ أَخِيهِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ كَعْبٍ، عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏"‏ مَنِ اقْتَطَعَ حَقَّ امْرِئٍ مُسْلِمٍ بِيَمِينِهِ فَقَدْ أَوْجَبَ اللَّهُ لَهُ النَّارَ وَحَرَّمَ عَلَيْهِ الْجَنَّةَ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ وَإِنْ كَانَ شَيْئًا يَسِيرًا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ ‏"‏ وَإِنْ قَضِيبًا مِنْ أَرَاكٍ ‏"‏ ‏

It is narrated on the authority of Abu Umama that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) observed: "He who appropriated the right of a Muslim by (swearing a false) oath, Allah would make Hell-fire necessary for him and would declare Paradise forbidden for him." A person said to him: Messenger of Allah, even if it is something insignificant? He (the Holy Prophet) replied: (Yes) even if it is the twig of the arak tree.

Now, just look around and see who is guilty of this crime and how innocently they ignore the grave consequences of their misdeed that await them in the life of the Hereafter. And imagine the amount of misappropriation as mentioned by the Prophet of Allah: "Even if it is the twig of the arak tree." Despite Divine Commandments, many Muslims are guilty of this crime and their spree continues unabated without any fear of the grave consequences that await them. Make sure YOU ARE NOT AMONG THESE!!
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 
وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.
