Man laments: It’s too difficult - Allah reassures: With every difficulty there is ease

Many a man when confronted with difficulties, lose heart and give away. It is only a few from the whole lot which never lose heart and continue to strive to achieve their goals and aims. This is true today and has been true in the past since worldly life set in. 

More than others, the arduous mission of the prophets and messengers of Allah has been more than the capacity of the common man and it has been their resilience to continue bearing the physical and mental stress, torture and slanders and continuing with the Divine task entrusted to them. But there has always been a limit to bear. Prophet Yunus (Jonah, peace be upon him) gave away and found him in the belly of a whale where he repented. And when finally forgiven and brought alive on the seashore, he was amazed to find the same hostile people had accepted the Divine will. Likewise, Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) when came down with tablets Divinely engraved found division in his people and was frustrated. But he too was shown the way to deal with the developing situation.

Likewise, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was in no different situation as his predecessors. And when the hostilities towards him by pagans of Makkah increased beyond his bearing limits, he too lamented for the difficulties he was being confronted with. It was then that the 94th chapter of Qur'an, Al Inshirah (The Opening Up) was revealed unto him and reassured him of Allah's help and that with every difficulty there is ease.

Herein under we pick up the 5th and 6th verses in which Allah reassures His prophet of there being ease after the difficulties he was facing:

فَاِنَّ مَعَ الۡعُسۡرِ يُسۡرًا ۙ - اِنَّ مَعَ الۡعُسۡرِ يُسۡرًا ؕ‏ 
(94:5) Indeed, there is ease with hardship - (94:6) Most certainly, there is ease with hardship
This has been repeated twice so as to reassure the Holy Prophet that the bad times hp was passing through at that time would not last forever, but were going to be replaced by good times in the near future. On the surface this appears to be a contradiction that hardship should be accompanied by ease, for these two things do not co-exist. But the words "hardship with ease" instead of "ease after hardship" have been used in the sense that the period of ease is so close to it as if it were a concomitant of it.

Qur'an Wiki Explanation:
Hardship is never absolute, for ease always accompanies it. When your burden became too heavy, We lifted up your heart and relieved you. The repetition suggests that the Prophet had endured serious hardship and much affliction. This reminder recalls the various aspects of care and concern shown to the Prophet and then reassures him emphatically. A matter which afflicts Muhammad’s soul so much must be very serious indeed. Then follows a statement pointing out the aspects of comfort and the factors contributing to the lifting up of hearts and spirits, which is of great help to Muslims as they travel along their hard and long way.

Yusuf Ali Explanation
This verse is repeated for extra emphasis. Whatever difficulties or troubles are encountered by men, Allah always provides a solution, a way out, a relief, a way to lead to ease and happiness, if we only follow His Path and show our Faith by patience and well-doing. The solution or relief does not merely come after the Difficulty: it is provided with it. I understand the definite article in al-'usr in a generic sense, and translate: "every difficulty". In xcii. 7, I have translated Yusr as Bliss, and in xcii. 10 'Usr as Misery.

Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Explanation:
(Therefore, [rest assured,] with this difficulty) Ie., so close is this ease to the difficult time he is facing that it is almost adjacent.

([you are now facing], a great ease awaits.)  The ease referred to in the verse is that which was afforded to the Prophet (sws) in Madīnah after migration. As a result, not only did his preaching endeavours lead to political authority, but also with this authority the whole of Arab became subservient to him.

(With this difficulty, a great ease awaits) The repetition emphasizes the glad tidings. The period in which this sūrah was revealed was apparently a very testing one. The Almighty presented various incidents of the Prophet’s life to assure him. He was told that the God Who endowed him with all these blessings was there to help him; very soon, these difficult times would give way to ease; the hindrances in his way would be removed and he and his companions would finally reach the destination the Almighty had appointed as an established practice for His messengers. The words are rather precise here. But in Sūrah al-Naṣr, details are cited. It is stated that God’s help and victory would come and the Prophet (sws) would see people entering the folds of Islam in multitudes.

So, my dear sisters and brothers in Islam, we must remember and should have firm faith that hardship is never absolute, for ease always accompanies it. Difficulties do go away and pave the way for ease provided one has faith in Allah and does not lose heart in the face of times, no matter how adverse and challenging. Floods wash away lands and houses, yet men rebuild what has been lost and continue living another life. In fact, losing heart and being scared of difficult times is something that Satan injects into us to break our will to carry one. So let us not have someone break our will and turn us into a failure. There is always light at the end of the tunnel that suddenly scares away the darkness we have been travelling in.
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 
وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

Let the mark of Allah’s favour and honour to you BE SEEN (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

Islam forbids extravagance and lavish living and life style, for such display of wealth leaves negative impression on others who can hardly make their ends meet. But at the same time, it is not desired that a person who has been adequately blessed should appear in rag tags or dirty clothes, even if as a mark of humility. Although wearing gold studded shirts and watches is not desired, for these give an impression of arrogance and pride, yet a well-to-do person should ensure to wear clean and washed clothes and not necessarily new clothes. 

On the same subject, a Hadith attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is mentioned in Sunan Abi Dawud (Book # 34 Clothing (Kitab Al-Libas): كتاب اللباس / Chapter # 1518 Regarding Worn Out Clothes, And Washing Clothes / باب فِي غَسْلِ الثَّوْبِ وَفِي الْخُلْقَانِ ) as Hadith number # 4063, quoted herein under:

Abu al-Ahwas quoted his father saying: I came to the Prophet (ﷺ) wearing a poor garment and he said (to me): Have you any property? He replied: Yes. He asked: What kind is it? He said: Allah has given me camels. Sheep, horses and slaves. He then said: When Allah gives you property, let the mark of Allah's favour and honour to you be seen.
Grade: Sahih (Al-Albani)

حَدَّثَنَا النُّفَيْلِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ أَبِي الأَحْوَصِ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فِي ثَوْبٍ دُونٍ فَقَالَ ‏"‏ أَلَكَ مَالٌ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ نَعَمْ ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏"‏ مِنْ أَىِّ الْمَالِ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ قَدْ أَتَانِيَ اللَّهُ مِنَ الإِبِلِ وَالْغَنَمِ وَالْخَيْلِ وَالرَّقِيقِ ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏"‏ فَإِذَا أَتَاكَ اللَّهُ مَالاً فَلْيُرَ أَثَرُ نِعْمَةِ اللَّهِ عَلَيْكَ وَكَرَامَتِهِ ‏"‏ ‏.

Sometimes well-to-do believers are found wearing dirty and even torn clothes and shoes, which in fact is a display of thanklessness to Allah for not wearing good clothes which they he can easily afford. At the same time, they live an extravagant way of life, moving about in flashy and expensive cars, partying in luxury hotels and displaying wealth as a show off, which is tangent to living a life of piety, humility, humbleness and thankfulness. So, let us live a life as per the honour, favours and blessings upon us by Allah and as directed by the revered Prophet (ﷺ) of Allah mentioned in the Hadith shared above. 

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 
وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

Seven Destroyers of Faith (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

Faith in Allah is the hallmark of believing Muslims. However, while we are contended with being Muslims, we usually do many ats that are tangent to the very essence of our Islamic Faith. And when we act upon some of the well-defined guidelines, we endanger our faith and are guilty of grave sin.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has listed seven actions and warn the believers to avoid these destroyers of faith. This Hadith is quoted in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: Book (#1) of Faith - كتاب الإيمان  as Hadith number # 262 as under:

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Avoid the seven destroyers." He was asked: "What are they, O Messenger of Allah?" He ﷺ said: "Associating others with Allah (Shirk); witchcraft; killing a soul whom Allah has forbidden us to kill, except for a right that is due; consuming orphans' wealth; consuming Riba; fleeing from the battlefield; and slandering chaste, innocent women."

Arabic Text:
حَدَّثَنِي هَارُونُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الْأَيْلِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ بِلَالٍ عَنْ ثَوْرِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ عَنْ أَبِي الْغَيْثِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ اجْتَنِبُوا السَّبْعَ الْمُوبِقَاتِ قِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَمَا هُنَّ قَالَ الشِّرْكُ بِاللَّهِ وَالسِّحْرُ وَقَتْلُ النَّفْسِ الَّتِي حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَأَكْلُ مَالِ الْيَتِيمِ وَأَكْلُ الرِّبَا وَالتَّوَلِّي يَوْمَ الزَّحْفِ وَقَذْفُ الْمُحْصِنَاتِ الْغَافِلَاتِ الْمُؤْمِنَاتِ.

Now let us take a self-appraisal of ourselves and see how many times we have been guilty of losing our faith. Let us take a rundown of each:
  • Associating others with Allah (Shirk): Although, most of the believers think that they believe in Oneness of Allah, yet they visit graves of the dead, though very pious in their lives, and move them to be intercessors between them and Allah and pray for forgiveness. There are umpteen number of anecdotes on social media in which graves of once worldly saints are visited and prostrated as an act of bowing, while it is strictly forbidden to prostrate anyone other than Allah, the One and Only Sustainer and Giver. Remember wishing Merry Christmas to Christians also falls under the category of shirk because as per Christian belief on this day Jesus Christ, the son of God and even later God as part of the Trinity concept, was born. So, by wishing them merry Christmas we may inadvertently be committing shirk.
  • Practicing witchcraft: Witchcraft is often taken as a means to fulfill one's wishes and cast overshadow and evil spell on others. Surah 113. Al Falak mentions women and witches casting spells and even the very personality of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was many a time targeted by the witches to have him refrained from his mission of spreading Islam. It is therefore strictly forbidden to learn and practice the art of witchcraft.
  • Killing a soul whom Allah has forbidden us to kill: "This is a statement of the sanctity of life which is found in every religion and moral code." Killing of a human is one of the biggest destroyers of faith, for giving and taking life is the exclusive domain of Allah, the Almighty. We, more often than not, read news of Muslims killing others on family disputes and petty things. One who kills a soul, whether Muslim or otherwise, is this liable to destroy his faith as he commits a crime so strictly forbidden. This means that human life, which has been declared inviolable by God, can only be destroyed for just cause. As for what is meant by 'just cause', we ought to remember that three cases are embodied in the Qur'an whereas two additional cases have been stated by the Prophet (peace be on him). The cases mentioned by the Qur'an are the following:
  • (1) That a man is convicted of deliberate homicide and thus the claim of retaliation is established against him.
  • (2) That someone resists the establishment of the true faith so that fighting against him might become necessary.
  • (3) That someone is guilty of spreading disorder in the Domain of Islam and strives to overthrow the Islamic order of government.
  • The two cases mentioned in the Hadith are:
  • (1) That a person commits illegitimate sexual intercourse even after marriage.
  • (2) That a Muslim is guilty of apostasy and rebellion against the Muslim body-politic.
  • Except for these five reasons, slaying a human being is not permissible, regardless of whether he is a believer, a protected non-Muslim (dhimmi) or an ordinary unbeliever. 

  • Consuming orphans' wealth: The wealth of orphans kept in the custody of someone, till the orphans attain adulthood, is a very sacred responsibility. Yet we see guardians depriving the orphans of their due share or even not giving a penny at all on flimsy excuses. Do you think such a deceitful person reserves any right to retain his faith?
  • Consuming Riba: Consummation of Riba or interest is one of the major evils mentioned in Qur'an. People have been robbed of their possessions for paying intertest over interest on a loan they have obtained. Men engaged in this business are heartless and do not care to deprive a person of his possessions in the name of payment of interest. There are many studies going on consummation of riba by banks. Even the Islamic banking still falls short of laying down practical steps to abolish riba.
  • Fleeing from the battlefield: Fighting in the name of Allah has been ordained for all Muslims so as to preserve the religion of Islam. So, when an enemy threatens Muslims, it is the sacred duty of all able-bodied Muslims to defend against the enemy and face martyrdom, rather than turning back and fleeing the battlefield. Those who do so endanger their faith.
  • Slandering chaste, innocent women: Islam places a lot of emphasis on the women, for dignity and honour of chaste women once tarnished cannot be easily restored. Therefore, Muslims should be very careful in passing any derogatory remark about a sister in Islam in particular or for that matter any woman in general.
  • Slander indicates mentioning hidden weak points and faults of the others so that if they hear, they will be disturbed. These points are either concerned with religious, moral, spiritual and social aspects, or with corporeal aspects, including face, body's limbs, corporal powers, and actions and behaviours, or his attachments, such as wife, child, and or his clothing, house, etc.
  • Thus, be respectful to women and let us not commit sin by saying even a passing remark about a sister in Islam which may disturb her or portray her as a bad woman in the society. Slander lowers the reputation of a Muslim sister and damages her honour. 

Remember what Qur'an mentions about slandering: "O ye who believe! Shun much suspicion; for lo! some suspicion is a crime. And spy not, neither backbite one another. Would one of you love to eat the flesh of his dead brother? Ye abhor that (so abhor the other)! And keep your duty (to Allah). Lo! Allah is Relenting, Merciful." (49:12)

Let us then, my brothers and sisters in Islam, be weary of these seven destroyers of faith and refrain from committing any of these in any degree or magnitude, lest we endanger our Eeman and faith.

Three Times when a believer doesn't remain a believer (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

Committing sins is the gravest harm a believer can induce to his otherwise good character. It is for this very reason; believers have been cautioned many a times both in Qur'an and in Hadiths of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to refrain from even thinking of committing a sin, for a polluted thought process can be taken advantage of the Evil and lure him into actually doing an act from where there is no return.

We share today a Hadith attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ wherein he cautions the believers and warns them that at the time of committing three grave sins, a believer doesn't remain a believer, and unless he repents earnestly and seeks the Divine forgiveness, his faith remains doubtful.

This Hadith is mentioned in Bukhārī  (Book 86 - Limits and Punishments set by Allah (Hudood) /  كتاب   الحدود / Chapter 20: The sin of illegal sexual intercourse / باب إِثْمِ الزُّنَاةِ ) as Hadith 6810, given herein under:

Narrated by revered Abu Huraira: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "The one who commits an illegal sexual intercourse is not a believer at the time of committing illegal sexual intercourse and a thief is not a believer at the time of committing theft and a drinker of alcoholic drink is not a believer at the time of drinking. Yet, (the gate of) repentance is open thereafter."

Arabic Text:
حَدَّثَنَا آدَمُ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ ذَكْوَانَ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ "‏ لاَ يَزْنِي الزَّانِي حِينَ يَزْنِي وَهْوَ مُؤْمِنٌ، وَلاَ يَسْرِقُ حِينَ يَسْرِقُ وَهْوَ مُؤْمِنٌ، وَلاَ يَشْرَبُ حِينَ يَشْرَبُهَا وَهْوَ مُؤْمِنٌ، وَالتَّوْبَةُ مَعْرُوضَةٌ بَعْدُ ‏"‏‏.‏

Imagine these three grave offences which even believers are guilty of committing and even after committing these sins, they just shrug off their act as if nothing bad has happened. Or even when they knowingly commit a sin, they just laugh it out and say that they would repent afterwards. 

This hadith highlights the serious nature of certain sins in Islam and underscores the importance of faith in guiding a person's actions. It emphasizes that engaging in major sins such as adultery, theft, and drinking alcohol is not compatible with true belief. However, it also offers hope through the constant opportunity for repentance.

Key Points of the Hadith:
  • State of Belief and Major Sins: The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) states that when a person commits a major sin, such as illegal sexual intercourse (adultery or fornication), theft, or consuming alcohol, they are not considered a believer at the moment of committing the act. This does not mean they have completely lost their faith (Iman) or that they are permanently expelled from Islam; rather, it indicates a significant deficiency or weakness in their faith at that specific time.
  • Temporary Absence of Faith: The phrase “not a believer at the time” suggests that during the commission of these sins, the person’s faith is overshadowed by their sinful desires. The light of faith, which would normally prevent a believer from such acts, is temporarily absent, and they are acting contrary to the principles of true belief.
  • Repentance is Always Open: Despite the gravity of these sins, the hadith concludes with a message of hope: the gate of repentance is always open. This means that no matter how serious the sin, Allah’s mercy and forgiveness are available to those who genuinely repent, seek forgiveness, and strive to change their behavior.
Implications of the Hadith:
  • Severity of Major Sins: This hadith emphasizes the severe impact that major sins have on a person's spiritual state. It serves as a warning that such actions are not compatible with the qualities of a true believer and that engaging in them damages one’s relationship with Allah.
  • Faith and Actions Are Interconnected: In Islam, faith (Iman) and actions are closely linked. Committing major sins indicates a lapse in the quality of one's faith because a strong believer is expected to abstain from these harmful actions. This hadith underscores that true faith should act as a barrier against sin.
  • The Concept of Repentance (Tawbah): The hadith beautifully illustrates Allah’s infinite mercy and willingness to forgive. Regardless of how severe the sin, sincere repentance is always accepted. This involves feeling genuine remorse, immediately stopping the sin, asking Allah for forgiveness, and making a firm intention not to return to the sin.
  • Encouragement to Avoid Sin and Seek Forgiveness: The hadith encourages believers to avoid major sins by maintaining a strong and active faith. If they do fall into sin, they are reminded not to despair but to turn back to Allah promptly. The emphasis on repentance serves as a motivation for Muslims to continually seek Allah’s mercy and improve their actions.
  • Not a Loss of Faith but a Deficiency: Importantly, the hadith does not suggest that a person who commits these sins is no longer a Muslim; rather, it indicates that their faith is deeply compromised at that moment. This serves as a cautionary note for believers to guard their faith and be mindful of their actions.
This hadith serves both as a stern warning and a beacon of hope. It highlights the seriousness of major sins and their impact on a believer’s faith while simultaneously offering reassurance that Allah’s mercy is always within reach through sincere repentance. It teaches that faith should be the guiding force in a believer’s life, steering them away from sin, and that no matter how far one has strayed, the door to Allah’s forgiveness remains open.

My sitters in Islam, you entice and lure men into sin by wearing inappropriate and revealing dresses. it is for this reason; it is mandatory for Muslim women to cover their curves of the body by not wearing revealing dresses and observe Hijab. And if a woman is wearing tempting clothes or perfumes that attract men and induce in them haram thoughts, then other than the men who are being lured in to it, the women too will be guilty of doing so. And the men gazing at women will also be punished for men too have been asked to lower their gaze so as not to be attracted or enticed. Likewise, drinking is yet another haram act for when one is drunk, he loses control over senses and in this state most of acts illegal sex take place. In fact, women are forced to drink alcohol which makes them lose their senses and thus men take advantage of state. 

So, believers, especially sisters in Islam, take care of your modesty and be not be alone with men or in parties where alcohol is openly drunk so as to protect your modesty and honour. Although the gate to repentance never closes, one should avoid situations when one gives into sin and loses one's chastity, and faith too.  And if at all a sin has been committed, then one must earnestly repent one's act and seek Divine forgiveness for Allah is all Mercy and oft Forgiving.
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 
وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Etiquettes taught by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: Sharing same food with servant that he made for you

The value of means of sustenance should be asked from people who are greatly less fortunate as compared to others.  Those who have a surplus or more than others must therefore share it with those who need even a piece of date to eat to address their hunger. 

It is generally seen that people who have more and can even hire a servant or a cook to make food for them are not given part of the food they have so painstakingly prepared for their masters in the heat and smoke of the kitchen. This is why Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has at many a time advised his companions to look after their servants well before helping others out of their household. That is why it is generally said that charity begins from home.

In connection with this premise, we share a Hadith attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ which emphasizes the need to be kind to one's servant and share food with him, the same food he prepared for his master.  This Hadith is mentioned in Sunan Ibn Majah (Chapters on Food كتاب الأطعمة / Chapter # 24 Caution and piety /باب الْوَرَعِ وَالتَّقْوَى) as Hadith number # 4216 as under:

It was narrated from ‘Abdullah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “When the servant of anyone of you brings his food, let him make him sit down with him or give him some of it, for he is the one who put up with its heat and smoke.”
Grade: Sahih (Darussalam)

Arabic Text:
حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْمُنْذِرِ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ، حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ الْهَجَرِيُّ، عَنْ أَبِي الأَحْوَصِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ ‏ "‏ إِذَا جَاءَ خَادِمُ أَحَدِكُمْ بِطَعَامِهِ فَلْيُقْعِدْهُ مَعَهُ أَوْ لِيُنَاوِلْهُ مِنْهُ فَإِنَّهُ هُوَ الَّذِي وَلِيَ حَرَّهُ وَدُخَانَهُ ‏"‏‏.‏

This etiquette is commonly seen being observed by the Arabs who have their staff sit with them and eat food with them. Let us also emulate this Hadith and should never have separate food for servants and separate for masters. Let us share food with them to foster brotherhood among us.

Etiquettes of attending the Jumu'ah Congregation - Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Youm e Jumu'ah (Friday day congregation) assumes a very important day in the life of Muslims all over the world. It is the day when all adult men (and women too) flock the masjids to offer the noon prayer in a congregation as commanded by Allah in Surah Jumu'ah, the 62nd Chapter of Qur'an. We have already written a number of posts to highlight the importance of the day based on verses from Qur'an and many a Hadith attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Today we share yet another important Hadith of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in which the revered prophet has highlighted the need to prepare well for the Friday Prayer as best as one can and then pray as much to Allah as one can after entering the masjid before commencement of Jumu'ah prayer khutba (address) by the imam leading the prayer. 

This Hadith is quoted in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: Book (#11) Friday Prayer - كتاب الجمعة   / Chapter # 6 To use (hair) oil for the Friday prayer / باب الدُّهْنِ لِلْجُمُعَةِ ) as Hadith number # 883 as under:

Narrated Salman-Al-Farsi: The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever takes a bath on Friday, purifies himself as much as he can, then uses his (hair) oil or perfumes himself with the scent of his house, then proceeds (for the Jumu'ah prayer) and does not separate two persons sitting together (in the mosque), then prays as much as (Allah has) written for him and then remains silent while the Imam is delivering the Khutba, his sins in-between the present and the last Friday would be forgiven."

Arabic Text:
حَدَّثَنَا آدَمُ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي ذِئْبٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ، قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي أَبِي، عَنِ ابْنِ وَدِيعَةَ، عَنْ سَلْمَانَ الْفَارِسِيِّ، قَالَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ "‏ لاَ يَغْتَسِلُ رَجُلٌ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ، وَيَتَطَهَّرُ مَا اسْتَطَاعَ مِنْ طُهْرٍ، وَيَدَّهِنُ مِنْ دُهْنِهِ، أَوْ يَمَسُّ مِنْ طِيبِ بَيْتِهِ ثُمَّ يَخْرُجُ، فَلاَ يُفَرِّقُ بَيْنَ اثْنَيْنِ، ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي مَا كُتِبَ لَهُ، ثُمَّ يُنْصِتُ إِذَا تَكَلَّمَ الإِمَامُ، إِلاَّ غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ الْجُمُعَةِ الأُخْرَى ‏"‏‏.‏

The self-explanatory Hadith lays down the special preparation one has to make before embarking to the masjid for the Friday Congregational Prayer which entails:
  • Taking a bath on Friday, purifying himself as much as he can. Since the Jumu'ah congregation is an obligation on all Muslims, on this day, the masjids are overcrowded as compared to usual noon prayer, that is Dhur. Therefore, it is incumbent over every Muslim to take a complete bath and wear clean / washed clothes so that they are not smelly.
  • In addition, one should use his (hair) oil and perfume himself with the scent of his house. This is for the same reason as taking a bath and warding off any odd smell.
  • Upon entering the masjid, one should not jump over the people already sitting in the masjid.
  • Thereafter, one should busy himself in remembering Allah as much one can. 
  • And when the imam commences the Khutba, one should silently listen to the imam.

Man laments: Satan's plot is too strong - Allah reassures: Feeble indeed is the cunning of Satan

The lives of true believers are a strongly contested tug of war between them and the machinations of the Satan and the Evil. Although, the Divine Commandments about Satan and its strategy are very clear that warn believers to be on the alert to ward of its evil designs, yet a common believer is generally too weak to fight back the Satan and its tactics. The power of lewdness, greed, dishonesty and arrogance is more often than not too lucrative and leads them into a trap, much cautioned against.

Even one is facing an enemy, Evil tries to attack the heart and mind of the believers that they would be harmed or even killed and their families will be routed by the adversary, so leave fighting in the way of Allah and be safe. The same is true when evil is pitched against goodness wherein a battle of hearts and minds sets into motion to think and weigh to decide between good and bad.

In such eventualities, when a beleiver's mind is polluted and becomes scared of Satanic machination being overwhelming, Allah reassures him that no matter what Satan does, he is an ultimate looser for he is too feeble to face and context the Divine Power. 

We share the 76th verse of Surah 4. An Nisa with the same theme. Although, here the mention of fighting between the way of Allah and Satan is mentioned, the same can be read in context of a fight between good and evil. Here, disbelievers could be non-Muslims and also beleivers with weak heart who get scared of Satan's tactics and start to have cold feet to see a large enemy facing them or strength of lewdness for luring them into committing sins and going against the Divine path. For such beleivers, it is being Divinely reassured to stay firm for indeed cunning of Satan is weak and will be defeated in the end. 

اَلَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا يُقَاتِلُوۡنَ فِىۡ سَبِيۡلِ اللّٰهِ​​ ۚ وَالَّذِيۡنَ كَفَرُوۡا يُقَاتِلُوۡنَ فِىۡ سَبِيۡلِ الطَّاغُوۡتِ فَقَاتِلُوۡۤا اَوۡلِيَآءَ الشَّيۡطٰنِ​ۚ اِنَّ كَيۡدَ الشَّيۡطٰنِ كَانَ ضَعِيۡفًا
(4:76) Those who have faith fight in the way of Allah, while those who disbelieve fight in the way of taghut (Satan). Fight, then, against the fellows of Satan. Surely Satan's strategy is weak.

In the sight of Allah, there are two distinct parties of fighters. One party is that of the Believers who fight for the cause of Allah in order to establish his way on His earth, and every sincere Believer is bound to perform this duty. The other party is that of unbelievers who fight in the way of Taghut so as to establish the rule of the rebels against Allah on His earth and no Believer would side with them in this evil work. 

106The Believers have been assured that they should not be cowed and terrified by the apparent grand preparations and evil designs of Satan and his companions: because ultimately, they are bound to fail.

Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:
Then follows another psychological touch to inspire enthusiasm and vigour, and to define the values and objectives for which each side is fighting. “Those who believe fight in the cause of God, and those who reject the faith fight in the cause of evil. Fight, then, against the friends of Satan. Feeble indeed is the cunning of Satan.” (Verse 76)
 
In one stroke, people are set apart, lines are drawn and objectives are clearly identified, as mankind are divided into two distinct and separate camps. “Those who believe fight in the cause of God...” and “... those who reject the faith fight in the cause of evil.” (Verse 76)
 
Believers fight in order to uphold God’s order and establish His laws and justice “among people” in the name of God Almighty, rather than under any other banner. They acknowledge and attest that God alone is the Lord and, therefore, He is the Ruler.
 
Unbelievers, however, fight in the cause of evil, advocating various ideologies and legal systems, other than that of God Almighty. They uphold various values and standards that are different from those laid down by God. In this contest, the believers stand supported and protected by God. The unbelievers, with their various beliefs, ideologies, values, and methods, rely on Satan’s protection and support. Collectively, they are his followers and supporters.
 
God instructs the believers to confront Satan’s supporters and not be afraid of their power or cunning: “Fight, then, against the friends of Satan. Feeble indeed is the cunning of Satan.” (Verse 76)

Let us then, beleivers, be firm against Satan and should never be scared or overawed by its power for Allah's strategy is much superior and forceful against will Satan will have to lose and perish. Remember, the believers fight in obedience to Allah and to gain His pleasure, while the disbelievers fight in obedience to Shaytan. Or we can also say that a strong believer faces the strategy of Satan rationally using what his mind directs, while a believer with weak faith listens to his heart and becomes emotionally engrossed to lose.

The best among you is he who is best to his wife (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

A family is the main focus of life of Muslims. Therefore, a lot of emphasis is given to marriage rather than stray and unbonded relations between man and woman. The bonded relation between man and woman is pure, clean and beginning of a family, duly patronaged by the parents. It is for this reason, divorce, though permissible, is the least liked act and husbands and wives are encouraged to keep their marriages intact so that they can rear their children in the best possible environment.

While much has been mentioned about love and are of one's spouse, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ too had on a number of occasions asked his companions to be good their wives as he himself has been so.  

One such Hadith is mentioned Jami` at-Tirmidhi  (Chapters on Virtues) كتاب  المناقب عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم / Chapter # 64 The Virtue of the Wives of the Prophet (SAW) /  باب  فَضْلِ أَزْوَاجِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ) as Hadith number # 3895 given herein under:

Narrated by 'Aishah:
that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "The best of you is the best to his wives, and I am the best of you to my wives, and when your companion dies, leave him alone."
Grade: Sahih (Darussalam)

Arabic Text:
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ "‏ خَيْرُكُمْ خَيْرُكُمْ لأَهْلِهِ وَأَنَا خَيْرُكُمْ لأَهْلِي وَإِذَا مَاتَ صَاحِبُكُمْ فَدَعُوهُ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ صَحِيحٌ مِنْ حَدِيثِ الثَّوْرِيِّ مَا أَقَلَّ مَنْ رَوَاهُ عَنِ الثَّوْرِيِّ ‏.‏ وَرُوِيَ هَذَا عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم مُرْسَلٌ ‏.

As can be ascertained from the text of the Hadith quoted above, a lot of stress is laid on having cordial relation with one's spouse by taking care of her in the best possible love and care. A true Muslim does not abuse or shouts or physically mishandles his wife or his children. In fact, children learn from what they see in their home. Those homes where marital relations are abused have a negative fallout on the children who too become abusive and cruel once they grow up. The love for one's spouse also entails not talking bad or ill of the one who is dead and not abusing the dead one for the dead one is not there to give an explanation.
The family life of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the best example for us to emulate. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was an exemplary family man. He was an effective, responsible and loving husband, father and grandfather.
So, my brothers and sisters in Islam, be very nice to your spouses and rear your families in total harmony with the tenets of Islam and love and care. Let us build a society based on families brought up in the best manner as taught by our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 
وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.
