What is your goal for your spiritual development this Ramadan?

Alhamdolillah, we are the blessed ones to be fasting during this month of Ramadan. We have been fasting all our lives, or at best most of our lives, and this year too Allah has blessed us the opportunity to fast yet again. We cannot find words to express our gratitude to the favour of Allah of bestowing us yet another opportunity to fast for the love of Allah.

But have ever pondered over how should we live through this Ramadan of our lives? What is something special that we would love and like to concentrate while fasting and making all related worships and prayers specific to Ramadan?

Or in simple words: What is our GOAL for this Ramadan?

I think most of of us do not make a pledge to be different than all previous months of Ramadan. We just begin the month by fasting, going to Taraweeh prayers, reciting Qur'an more than the usual and giving out more in charity. This is what we did last year and the years before. So how do we make this Ramadan different by setting a goal for ourselves?

I  came across a very mind boggling lecture by Dr. Haifaa Younis | Mifftaah and I was really moved what she said. She paves a way for me to be spiritually better than I was last Ramadan. In fact, we should carryout a self appraisal every Ramadan and ponder over whether we have moved a notch above than las t year. And even if we have moved even an inch above on the scale of purity and spirituality than last year, we should be proud of achieving a great deal than the previous year. Let us be benefitted from her soul searching talk on "What is your goal for Ramadan?"
After listening to this lecture, I hope I will make this Ramadan different from all the previous years and concentrate on one aspect of of our lives and make an endeavour to be better than before. In Sha Allah.
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Note: When we mention God in our posts, we mean One True God, we call Allah in Islam, with no associates. Allah is the Sole Creator of all things, and that Allah is all-powerful and all-knowing. Hadith Qudsi: Allah loves the believers who remain sincere in their worship

No love in this world is greater than the love of Allah for His sincere believers and worshippers. And that in fact should be the endeavour of every Muslim to do whatever is humanly possible to get closer to their Creator so that are blessed, guided and loved.

In our series of Hadith Qudsi, we share today a well-known narration where Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) reports a profound statement from Allah. This hadith is a narration where Allah speaks directly to the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), revealing His will and intentions in a personal manner and is mentioned in Sahi al-Bukhārī  (Book 81: To make the Heart Tender (Ar-Riqaq) / كتاب  الرقاق / Chapter 38:  The humility or modesty or lowliness / باب  التَّوَاضُعِ / as Hadith 6502, given herein under:

Narrated by Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said:

"Allah said, 'I will declare war against him who shows hostility to a pious worshipper of Mine. And the most beloved things with which My slave comes nearer to Me, is what I have enjoined upon him; and My slave keeps on coming closer to Me through performing Nawafil (praying or doing extra deeds besides what is obligatory) till I love him, so I become his sense of hearing with which he hears, and his sense of sight with which he sees, and his hand with which he grips, and his leg with which he walks; and if he asks Me, I will give him, and if he asks My protection (Refuge), I will protect him; (i.e. give him My Refuge) and I do not hesitate to do anything as I hesitate to take the soul of the believer, for he hates death, and I hate to disappoint him."

This hadith beautifully describes the deep relationship between Allah and His devoted worshippers. It emphasizes the importance of both obligatory and voluntary acts of worship in drawing closer to Allah. Allah promises to protect, guide, and answer the prayers of His beloved servants, and He is deeply merciful, even in matters like death. The hadith shows how much Allah loves His believers and how He is always with them, guiding them and fulfilling their needs, as long as they remain sincere in their worship.

This hadith explains several key concepts about Allah's relationship with His believers, focusing on His mercy, love, and guidance. Let's look at the different parts of the hadith and explain their meanings:

"I will declare war against him who shows hostility to a pious worshipper of Mine."
  • Meaning: Allah is saying that if someone shows hostility, harm, or opposition to a sincere and pious worshiper (a true servant of Allah), He will oppose that person. This highlights the sanctity of those who are devoted to worship and the protection Allah provides to His sincere believers.
  • Significance: This is a reminder of the importance of protecting the rights of those who are righteous and dedicated to their faith. Those who oppose or harm them will face consequences because of Allah's protection over His servants.
  • Related Qur'anic Concept: This idea of protecting the believers and punishing those who harm them is echoed in the Qur'an. For example, Surah Al-Baqarah (2:190) says: "Fight in the way of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress. Indeed, Allah does not like transgressors." Allah protects His believers, and those who harm them will face consequences.
"The most beloved things with which My slave comes nearer to Me, is what I have enjoined upon him."
  • Meaning: Allah is telling us that the most beloved acts to Him are the ones He has commanded us to do — the obligatory acts of worship like the five daily prayers (Salah), fasting in Ramadan, giving charity (Zakat), and other essential duties.
  • Significance: This emphasizes the importance of fulfilling the obligations prescribed by Allah. These acts of worship are the foundation of a Muslim's relationship with Allah.
  • Related Qur'anic Concept: In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:177), Allah says: "It is not righteousness that you turn your faces toward the East or the West, but righteousness is in one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets..." This verse highlights that fulfilling Allah’s commandments is the core of righteousness.
"My slave keeps on coming closer to Me through performing Nawafil (extra deeds) till I love him..."

Profound relationship between Allah and His devout worshippers (Hadith Qudsi)

Islam is a unique religion in which there is a profound and direct one to one linkage between Allah and His worshippers. This linkage does not require the need of an intermediary to convey one's heart out to one's Creator. This relationship become more closer if the believer is devout worshipper who does not look to anyone but to Allah.

The relationship between Allah (God) and a true believer is deeply rooted in concepts of love, obedience, trust, and closeness. It is a relationship of absolute submission and devotion, based on the recognition of Allah's supremacy, mercy, compassion, and justice. This relationship is expressed through worship, adherence to Allah’s commands, and a personal connection with Him through prayer, supplication, and reliance.

Talking this very close relationship  between Allah and the devout worshipper, we share today a Hadith Qudsi attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, as mentioned in Sahi al-Bukhārī  (Book 81: To make the Heart Tender (Ar-Riqaq) / كتاب  الرقاق / Chapter 38:  The humility or modesty or lowliness / باب  التَّوَاضُعِ / as Hadith 6502, given herein under:

Narrated by Abu Huraira:

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Allah said, 'I will declare war against him who shows hostility to a pious worshipper of Mine.

This Hadith Qudsi is a profound narration in which Allah speaks directly, expressing His immense love and closeness to His sincere worshippers. It encapsulates the profound relationship between Allah and His devout worshippers. It aligns perfectly with the themes found in the Qur'an: that Allah loves the believers who fulfill His commands, and those who go beyond the obligatory acts of worship by performing Nawafil draw even closer to Him. Allah promises to guide, protect, and fulfill the requests of His righteous servants, and He is deeply compassionate toward them. This hadith serves as a reminder of the boundless mercy of Allah and encourages believers to strive for closeness to Him through both obligatory and voluntary acts of worship.

Let's break down the key components of the hadith and examine them in the light of the Qur'an:
  • Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Allah said: "I will declare war against him who shows hostility to a pious worshipper of Mine." Allah declares that anyone who opposes or harms a true believer, particularly one who is devoted in worship, will be in direct opposition to Allah Himself. This emphasizes the importance of respecting and protecting those who sincerely worship Allah.
  • "The most beloved things with which My slave comes nearer to Me, is what I have enjoined upon him..." Allah reveals that the most beloved actions to Him are those that He has commanded—such as the obligatory prayers (Salah), fasting, and other mandatory acts of worship.
  • "My slave keeps on coming closer to Me through performing Nawafil (extra deeds) till I love him..." Beyond obligatory worship, Allah invites His believers to engage in extra acts of worship (Nawafil), like voluntary prayers, charity, and other good deeds. This voluntary worship gradually brings the believer closer to Allah, leading to His love.
  • "So I become his sense of hearing with which he hears, and his sense of sight with which he sees, and his hand with which he grips, and his leg with which he walks..." Allah promises a deep level of closeness and guidance to His beloved servant, to the point where Allah's guidance becomes intertwined with the believer's senses and actions. This signifies that when a believer is in such close proximity to Allah, their actions are guided by Him, and they follow the path of righteousness in every aspect of their lives.
  • "If he asks Me, I will give him, and if he asks My protection (Refuge), I will protect him..." Allah guarantees that when a believer seeks from Him, He will fulfill their needs, and when they seek His protection, He will grant it. This reflects Allah’s generosity and mercy toward those who are devoted to Him.
  • "I do not hesitate to do anything as I hesitate to take the soul of the believer, for he hates death, and I hate to disappoint him." Allah admits that He loves the believer so much that He hesitates to take their life, as they dislike death. This part of the hadith shows Allah's deep love and compassion for His righteous servants.
Understanding the Hadith in Light of the Qur'an
Now, let’s understand the meaning and implications of this hadith through the lens of the Qur'an.

Hostility Toward Pious Believers: Allah promises protection to the believers and warns those who oppose them.
  • In Surah Al-Mujadila (58:22), it says: "You will not find a people who believe in Allah and the Last Day loving those who oppose Allah and His Messenger..." Those who show hostility toward the pious invite Allah’s anger, and this hadith emphasizes the severity of such opposition.
  • In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:190), Allah commands the believers to defend themselves against oppressors: "Fight in the way of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress. Indeed, Allah does not like transgressors."
The Beloved Acts of Worship (Fard and Nawafil): Allah loves those who fulfill their obligatory acts of worship.
  • In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:177), Allah explains the importance of doing what He has commanded: "It is not righteousness that you turn your faces toward the East or the West, but righteousness is in one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets..." This verse shows that fulfilling Allah's commands is central to righteousness.
  • Additionally, the concept of Nawafil (voluntary acts) is supported in Surah Al-Isra (17:79), where Allah says: "And from part of the night, pray with it (as voluntary) for extra worship for you. It is expected that your Lord will raise you to a praised station." This reinforces the idea that voluntary acts of worship bring a believer closer to Allah.
Allah’s Closeness to His Beloved Servants: Allah’s promise to be with His servant in every aspect of their life reflects the deeper connection a believer develops through worship.
  • Surah Al-Baqarah (2:286) states: "Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear." When a person becomes close to Allah, their heart is aligned with Allah’s will, and they are protected from hardship that they cannot bear.
  • In Surah At-Tawbah (9:24), Allah says: "Say, 'If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your wives, your relatives, the wealth you have acquired, the commerce in which you fear decline, and the dwellings in which you delight are more beloved to you than Allah and His Messenger, and striving in His cause, then wait until Allah executes His command..." This highlights how one's connection with Allah should be the most important thing in their life.
Allah’s Mercy and Generosity:
The promise that Allah will give the believer what they ask for and protect them is consistent with His attribute as Al-Rahman (The Most Merciful) and Al-Ghaffar (The Constant Forgiver). Allah's mercy is mentioned numerous times in the Qur'an, like in Surah Az-Zumar (39:53): "Say, 'O My servants who have harmed yourselves by your own actions, do not despair of Allah’s mercy. Allah forgives all sins. He is truly the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful." This verse emphasizes the vastness of Allah's mercy, a central theme in the hadith.

The Hesitation to Take the Soul of a Believer:
Allah’s compassion toward the believer and His reluctance to take their life is reflected in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:69): "And those who strive for Us - We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allah is with the doers of good." Allah is deeply invested in the well-being of the believers, and this hadith illustrates His love and hesitation to take their lives, highlighting His mercy and care for His righteous servants.

We, the Muslims, are fortunate to be of a religion wherein there exists a direct relationship between us and our Creator. We do not have to run around to find someone to pray on our behalf. We should therefore never let go this one to one communication and try to be a true and devout believer and worshipper so that Allah heeds to our prayers as He promised us in the Hadith Qudsi quoted above.

How to better benefit from the month of Ramadan

Month of Ramadan is once a year opportunity for the believers to get close to Allah by fasting, an act of worship which is exclusively to please Allah. In this month, the life style of the Muslims undergoes a phenomenal change whereby they abstain from all Halal things which are otherwise allowed to them during the remaining eleven months of the year. This month comes both in winters and summers owing to alignment of Lunar Calendar in Islam.

It is Divinely said in In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:185):

"Ramadan is the month in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights the new moon of the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey, then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship, and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that to which He has guided you, and perhaps you will be grateful."

This verse is often interpreted as describing the blessings, ease, and mercy that Allah provides to His believers during the month of Ramadan. Let’s break down the specific meanings related to "ease and mercy" that Allah intends:

Ease in Fasting:
  • Allah does not intend for you hardship: The verse directly states that Allah’s intent in prescribing fasting during Ramadan is not to make things difficult for His believers, but rather to make it easy for them. While fasting can seem physically demanding, the rewards and spiritual benefits make it easier for a believer who is sincere in their faith. The overall goal is to spiritually strengthen the individual, not to burden them. Allah has created the fast in such a way that the believer can endure it, and through His mercy, makes it possible for them to achieve the reward.
  • Flexibility for illness or travel: The verse also specifies that those who are ill or traveling are permitted to postpone their fast to a later time, highlighting Allah’s mercy and ease. This flexibility ensures that those who may not be able to fast during Ramadan due to health or travel are not unduly burdened, but rather allowed to make up the fasts later.
Ease in the Process of Repentance and Forgiveness:
  • Spiritual Mercy: Ramadan is a month of intense worship, prayer, and reflection, where Allah’s mercy is abundant. The fast itself serves as a means of spiritual purification. In many hadiths, it is mentioned that during Ramadan, Allah’s mercy is poured out, and believers who seek forgiveness are granted it.
  • Forgiveness for Sins: Ramadan is seen as a time when Allah’s mercy is especially prevalent. It’s a time when sins are forgiven, prayers are accepted, and the believer can purify themselves. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“Whoever fasts during Ramadan with faith and hoping for reward, his previous sins will be forgiven.” (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 38). This hadith shows Allah’s mercy and His willingness to forgive those who strive in worship during Ramadan.

Spiritual Benefits and Ease of Worship:
  • Closer Connection to Allah: During Ramadan, believers engage in more prayer (such as Taraweeh), recitation of the Qur'an, and acts of charity. Allah provides ease in this spiritual growth. The act of fasting itself purifies the soul and allows for a deeper connection with Allah. The peace and tranquility of Ramadan make it a time when a believer can engage in worship more readily, as the distractions of daily life are minimized.
  • Increased Reward for Acts of Worship: Allah’s mercy in Ramadan also includes multiplying the rewards of good deeds. The rewards for acts of worship, such as prayer, charity, and fasting, are heightened during Ramadan. This makes it easier for the believer to earn great rewards in a relatively short period of time.
Implications of not observing Ramadan in its true spirit
When Allah has promised so much ease and concessions to us, we would utter losers if we do not draw maximum benefit from the mercy of Allah by fasting the way it is meant for us. This calls for a complete transformation of our lifestyle during this sacred month and leave every thins that takes us away from remembrance of Allah. Let us have a brief look at our acts which we keep doing even when fasting and thus fail to receive mercy of Allah for Allah does not require of us to abstain from eating and drinking.
  • Sleeping the day altogether: Many a fasting brothers and sisters elect to sleep over the entire day, if not committed in their work, in order to evade the rigours of being hungry and thirsty. This certainly is not the spirit of fasting for it robs us from remembrance of Allah, reciting Qur'an and other forms of worship.
  • Busying oneself with mobile apps / games: Many youngsters are often seeing playing games on computers and cellular phones to preoccupy them  and kill time. There are apps of Qur'an and Sunnah which we could listen to instead that not only spiritually nurtures us but also helps to understand Islam much better.
  • Watching films on TV / Netflix: Films on TV and channels like Netflix are easy means of whiling away time in between the Sahoor (the pre-dawn meal) and Iftar (the meal of breaking fast at sunset). Imagine this time being devoted to reciting Qur'an or offering voluntary prayers (Nafl) and thus bagging immense dividends from Allah as promised by Him.
We could go on and on for such activities wasted away in leisure rather than activities that go by the spirit of Ramadan and harnessing oneself from every act that may take us from the pleasure of Allah.

For now, we share a very informative lecture by one of the most eminent scholars of present times, Nouman Ali Khan, who elaborates the verse quoted above and advises the Muslim brethren specially the youth as how to spend the day while fasting. Please watch the video:
About Nouman Ali Khan: Born to a Pakistani family, Nouman Ali Khan is an American Muslim speaker and Arabic instructor who founded the Bayyinah Institute for Arabic and Qur’anic Studies, after serving as an instructor of Arabic at Nassau Community College. He has been named one of the 500 most influential Muslims in the world by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre of Jordan.

Let us listen to this video again and again and really understand how Allah wants us to be His servants and how we should always be looking towards him, and no one else, for our worldly needs. If we can really absorb the meaning of this verse into ourselves, we will never go astray or be misled by worldly desires or following the priests and imams or asking from the dead saints.

Hadith Qudsi: Two occasions of joy for one who fasts

The month of Ramadan assumes immense importance in Islam. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is considered the holiest month for Muslims. It is one of the five pillars of Islam, therefore has it linkage directly connected to Allah, the Almighty. In fact, Ramadan is not just a month of fasting but a time for deep spiritual reflection, increased devotion, and self-discipline.

We have posted a number of posts based on Qur'an and Sunnah about Ramadan. In our effort to educated our readers about the importance of this sacred month, we share today a Hadith Qudsi. Although we have explained what a Hadith Qudsi really is and how does it differ from other hadiths attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in our earlier post: Collection of Hadith e Qudsi (حدیثِ قُدسی) attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , let us briefly recapitulate the difference between Hadith Qudsi and remaining Hadiths:

The straight difference between Qur'an and Hadith e Qudsi is that the text of Qur'an is verbatim from Allah, which were conveyed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and were conveyed to his companions in the same Divine words without any alteration. That is the words and meaning of the text of Qur'an is UNALTERED and remains unaltered as Allah Himself has taken upon Him the responsibility of conservation of Qur'an from any infiltration of manmade alterations.

As for the text of Hadith Qudsi is concerned, it contains the exact meaning as was intended by Allah Himself, but these were conveyed by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in his own words. Thus, while Hadith e Qudsi is from Allah, it cannot be made part of Qur'an for it has been re-worded by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. And it is for this very reason that in Hadith e Qudsi, it is always said that Allah has said this, or promised such a such thing. Hadith a Qudsi, thus cannot be treated or taken at par with Qur'an.

Let us now share a Hadith Qudsi regarding the month of Ramadan, fasting and the rewards it carry. This Hadith is mentioned in Sahih Muslim  (Book 13: The Book of Fasting / كتاب  الصيام / Chapter 30:  The Virtue of Fasting / باب فَضْلِ الصِّيَامِ / as Hadith 115e, given herein under:

Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:

Every (good) deed of the son of Adam would be multiplied, a good deed receiving a tenfold to seven hundredfold reward. Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, has said: With the exception of fasting, for it is done for Me and I will give a reward for it, for one abandons his passion and food for My sake. There are two occasions of joy for one who fasts, joy when he breaks it, and joy when he meets his Lord, and the breath (of an observer of fast) is sweeter to Allah than the fragrance of musk.

It highlights the unique status of fasting as an act of worship and its unparalleled reward from Allah.

Explanation of the Hadith in Light of the Qur'an and Sunnah:
1. Multiplication of Good Deeds:
  • Hadith Details: The Prophet (peace be upon him) mentions that every good deed performed by the son of Adam is multiplied from ten times to seven hundred times, except for fasting. The reward for fasting is uniquely with Allah, and He will directly reward it.
  • Qur'anic Reference: The Qur'an mentions the multiplication of rewards in several verses. Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah: "The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like that of a seed of grain that grows seven spikes, and in each spike is a hundred grains." (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:261). This verse emphasizes how Allah multiplies the reward of charitable acts. Similarly, other good deeds like prayer, zakat, and good actions are multiplied by Allah’s mercy. However, fasting is singled out in the hadith as having a reward that only Allah Himself will determine and give.
  • Sunnah: While good deeds in general receive a multiplied reward, fasting holds a unique place because it is an act of complete devotion and sincerity. The Prophet (peace be upon him) is reported to have said: "Allah says: 'All the actions of the son of Adam are for him, except fasting, which is for Me, and I will give the reward for it.'" (Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim). This illustrates the special status of fasting.
2. Fasting as an Act for Allah Alone:
  • Hadith Details: The Prophet (peace be upon him) explains that fasting is done for Allah’s sake alone. The fasting person abandons their desires, food, and drink solely out of devotion to Allah, not for any material or worldly benefit.
  • Qur'anic Reference: In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah commands: "And it is better for you that you fast, if you only knew." (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:184). Fasting is a direct, personal connection with Allah. The individual sacrifices their physical needs, seeking only Allah’s pleasure.
  • Sunnah: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Fasting is for Me, and I will reward it." (Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim). This indicates that fasting is a unique act that is not just a ritual or physical exercise but a spiritual act of complete submission to Allah.
3. Two Joys of the Fasting Person:
  • Hadith Details: The fasting person experiences two occasions of joy: first, when they break their fast at the end of the day, and second, when they meet their Lord in the Hereafter, receiving their reward.
  • Qur'anic Reference: In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says: "And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread of night, then complete the fast until the night." (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:187). This verse refers to the moment of joy when one breaks their fast at sunset, which is a time of gratitude to Allah for the strength to complete the day’s fast.
  • Sunnah: The Prophet (peace be upon him) further elaborates on the two moments of joy. The first joy is when the fasting person eats and drinks after the long day of fasting, and the second is when they meet Allah on the Day of Judgment. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "In Jannah, there is a gate called Ar-Raiyan, through which only those who fast will enter on the Day of Judgment." (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 1896). This signifies the ultimate reward and joy the fasting person will experience in the Hereafter.
4. The Breath of the Fasting Person is Sweeter to Allah than Musk:
  • Hadith Details: The hadith highlights that the breath of the fasting person, which may not smell pleasant to human senses, is cherished by Allah and is more beloved to Him than the fragrance of musk, a precious and fragrant substance.
  • Qur'anic Reference: There isn’t a specific verse in the Qur'an that directly discusses the smell of the fasting person’s breath. However, the Qur'an often emphasizes that Allah values actions done sincerely for His sake, and He sees beyond worldly appearances. Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah: "Indeed, Allah does not look at your bodies or your appearances, but He looks at your hearts and your deeds." (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:265). This reflects the idea that Allah values the internal sincerity and devotion of the fasting person over outward appearances.
  • Sunnah: The Prophet (peace be upon him) has pointed out that the fasting person's breath is sweeter to Allah than the fragrance of musk, illustrating how Allah appreciates the sacrifice made by His servant. This is a reminder that, in the eyes of Allah, the sincerity and devotion of an act of worship hold far greater value than any outward, worldly considerations.
Key Takeaways from the Hadith:
  • Special Reward for Fasting: Fasting is an act done purely for the sake of Allah, and its reward is uniquely determined by Him. Unlike other deeds that are multiplied in reward, fasting's reward is not limited and is promised directly by Allah.
  • Two Joys of Fasting: The fasting person experiences joy when breaking the fast, which symbolizes the physical reward, and ultimate joy when meeting Allah in the Hereafter, which signifies the spiritual reward.
  • The Unseen Value of Fasting: The fasting person's breath, although considered less pleasant in the worldly sense, is beloved to Allah, symbolizing the purity and sincerity of the fast.
  • Spiritual Significance: The act of fasting symbolizes deep devotion, personal sacrifice, and closeness to Allah. It is not just about abstaining from food and drink, but about purifying oneself spiritually and mentally.
This hadith, in the light of above explanation,  emphasizes the unique spiritual significance of fasting. It highlights that fasting is an act of worship that transcends the physical and connects the believer directly to Allah, resulting in a reward that is beyond human comprehension. Let all Muslim brothers and sisters make sure no fast is wasted away in the month of Ramadan and we fast with only intention: To please Allah and no one else. In sha Allah

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

Note: When we mention God in our posts, we mean One True God, we call Allah in Islam, with no associates. Allah is the Sole Creator of all things, and that Allah is all-powerful and all-knowing. Allah has no offspring, no race, no gender, no body, and is unaffected by the characteristics of human life.

How can a Muslim convince an Atheist about existence of God

Faith is something on which rests the very foundation of beliefs of a person. Although, most of the people around the world believe in the existence of God or a supreme being that controls the entire universe including the Heavens and the earth and all celestial movement flawlessly. Unless so designed by God, the celestial movement continues to swim in a time frame that never slows down or speeds up out of the control. These are the signs that God shows to the humans for none other than Him could conceive the fathomless and endless universe whose bounds have yet not been reached by man despite advancements in science and technology.

Despite the Godly signs that convince a man that there is some supreme being that is in control and shapes ups and down of our lives. Yet, there is a small body of men who call them atheists reject the concept of a being called God out there somewhere or everywhere. These people are so rigid in their belief that convincing an atheist that there is a God is a challenging task, especially since atheism often arises from skepticism about religious claims or a lack of belief in the divine.

However, a respectful and open-minded approach can be effective. At the end of this post we share a very meaningful discussion between an atheist and a Muslimah which culminates in convincing the atheist that his belief about non existence of God ws nothing but lack of comprehension and understanding, thus his disbelief.

Before we reach the end to the video, let us run down an approach that each Muslim should be able to adopt to approach issue:

Engage in Rational Dialogue:
A Muslim could begin by discussing the concept of God in an intellectual manner. This includes discussing cosmological arguments like the Kalam Cosmological Argument, which suggests that everything that begins to exist has a cause, and the universe began to exist—therefore, it must have had a cause (God).

Example Argument: "Everything in the universe had a cause. The universe itself, which began to exist, must also have had a cause. The cause must be outside of time, space, and matter, which is what we attribute to God."

Discuss the Fine-Tuning of the Universe:
The fine-tuning argument proposes that the physical constants of the universe are finely tuned for life. If any of these constants were slightly different, life wouldn't exist. This suggests a purposeful design.

Example Argument: "The universe seems to be fine-tuned for life. The odds of life emerging from random processes are astronomically low. This suggests that the universe might have been designed with a purpose."

Share Personal Experiences or the Role of Faith:
Faith often transcends empirical evidence, and a Muslim could share how their belief in God brings them peace, guidance, and a sense of purpose. This can be compelling, even if it doesn’t provide direct evidence of God.

Example: "For me, belief in God gives me a sense of direction and peace that I haven't found elsewhere. It's not just about intellectual arguments, but also about the sense of purpose and connection I experience."

Moral Argument:
Many people believe in objective morality—that some things are universally right or wrong. A Muslim could argue that this sense of objective morality points to a higher moral lawgiver, God.

Example Argument: "The very fact that we have a shared understanding of right and wrong, and that we seek justice, could point to a higher being who established this moral order. Without God, it would be hard to explain why certain moral truths exist."

The Concept of God in Islam:
Instead of focusing on religious texts initially, a Muslim might explain the Islamic concept of God, which is a non-anthropomorphic being, completely beyond the physical world and the limitations of time and space.

Example: "In Islam, God is understood as the Creator, who is beyond the limitations of the physical world and human comprehension. He is not confined to any form or shape, and He has no equal or partner. This concept of God is fundamentally different from human descriptions of gods in many religions."

Encourage Critical Thinking:
A Muslim could encourage the atheist to critically examine their own beliefs about the universe, life, and existence. Engaging in philosophical inquiry and being open to the idea that there may be more to existence than the material world might plant the seed of doubt in the atheist’s stance.

Example: "Have you ever considered that the universe itself, with its complexity and order, may point to a Creator? It's worth reflecting on why we are here and how everything came to be."

Respect for Different Views:
It’s important to approach the conversation with respect for the atheist’s perspective. A hostile or confrontational tone will likely push them away, while a respectful and understanding conversation can lead to deeper discussions about faith and existence.

Example: "I understand that this may be a difficult topic to discuss, but I value your perspective, and I hope we can have an open discussion about these big questions of life."

The key to tackle the issue and talking and convincing an atheist is patience and respect. A Muslim engaging an atheist about the existence of God should aim for an open and respectful dialogue, using reason, philosophical arguments, personal experiences, and an understanding of the atheist’s worldview. It’s unlikely that one conversation will change someone’s deeply held beliefs, but presenting rational arguments and showing the value of faith can plant the seeds of curiosity and openness.

Let us now listen to a very mind boggling debate between an atheist professor who could never be won over for his ideas and a Muslim female student. I for myself have never heard someone so convincingly winning over a staunch atheist to an extent of almost silencing him and forcing him to ponder over his staunch atheist belief and giving it a rethinking. Remember, the Muslim student could only do this because of her extensive understanding of Islam and because of this she could stand firm to her beleif despite being faced with a professor never accepting his defeat:

Those who turned on their heels will be taken away from Haud e Kauthar on the Judgement Day

Islam is the last and the final Divine religion that has come to stay till this world remains. Thereafter, a very severe, but just, trial court will be established to dish out rewards and awards for every human being who ever lived on our earth. The rewards and awards will be according to the deeds of every individual and the result of the test and trials through which one was made to pass through.

However, anyone who made mischief or turned on his heels after he has accepted Islam will be the most miserable person on that fateful day. Though believers of a low grade then, they will be brought near the Haud e Kauthar where Prophet Muhammad ﷺ will be waiting for his followers and after showing them the rewards of drinking from the sacred Heavenly pond, they will be made to turn away to the blazing fire of hell.

This is the subject of the hadith attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as mentioned in Sahi al-Bukhārī  (Book 81: To make the Heart Tender (Ar-Riqaq) / كتاب  الرقاق / Chapter 53:  Regarding Al-Haud / باب  فِي الْحَوْضِ / as Hadith 6593, given herein under:

Narrated Asma 'bint Abu Bakr:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "I will be standing at the Lake-Fount so that I will see whom among you will come to me; and some people will be taken away from me, and I will say, 'O Lord, (they are) from me and from my followers.' Then it will be said, 'Did you notice what they did after you? By Allah, they kept on turning on their heels (turned as renegades).' " The sub-narrator, Ibn Abi Mulaika said, "O Allah, we seek refuge with You from turning on our heels, or being put to trial in our religion."

Explanation:
This hadith speaks about a moment that will occur on the Day of Judgment, when the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ will be at the Haud — a large, blessed pool that Allah has granted him, which will be a source of relief and comfort for his followers. It is reported that the Prophet will recognize his followers as they approach to drink from the water.

What is Haud e Kauthar?
Before we expand the meaning of the hadith, let us know what is Haud e Kauthar and its significance. There is a mention of this sacred pond in the 108th chapter / Surah of the Qur'an:

اِنَّاۤ اَعۡطَيۡنٰكَ الۡكَوۡثَرَؕ‏
(108:1) (O Prophet), We have surely bestowed upon you good in abundance.

But thereafter no details are given. However, in a number of Hadiths, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself has explained what Al Kauthar is.

About this Heavenly pool (Haud means pool) Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has said that water will be supplied to it from the River Kauthar of Paradise. "Two channels from Paradise will flow into it and supply water to it." (Muslim: Kitab al-Fada il). According to another tradition: "A canal from the River Kauthar of Paradise will be opened towards this Fountain. " (Musnad Ahmad Marwiyyat `Abdullah bin Mas`ud). Its water is whiter than milk and sweeter than honey. There are birds in it whose necks are (long) like carrots." Umar said, "O Messenger of Allah! Verily, they (the birds) will be beautiful." The Prophet replied: "The one who eats them (i.e., the people of Paradise) will be more beautiful than them, O Umar."

Read more about Haud e Kauthar from our following previous posts:
While the blessed believers will rush towards this blessed pool where Prophet Muhammad ﷺ be in waiting for them, some of them will be turned away by the angels. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ will call out, expressing his concern, saying, "O Lord, they are from me and from my followers." But the reply will be that these people turned away from the path of Islam after the Prophet's death — they abandoned the faith, became renegades, or apostates. The words "turned on their heels" refer to people who rejected or deviated from the correct path of Islam, essentially turning back to disbelief.

The history is replete with many such people and so called fake prophets who soon after the death of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ proclaimed prophethood and became miscreants to create wedge in the hitherto forth firm ranks of the early Muslims. even today, some believers have digressed from their path and are true example of Muslims who have turned on their heels. This hadith is specific to such people.

Key Points and Lessons:
  • Warning of Apostasy: This hadith serves as a warning against apostasy, turning away from Islam after having embraced it. It highlights the danger of abandoning the faith and the severe consequences on the Day of Judgment when those who turn away from Islam will be turned away from the Prophet’s Haud.
  • The Test of Faith: The people who are turned away had once followed the Prophet, but their actions after his passing led them to turn back from the true teachings of Islam. This indicates that it is not enough to simply follow Islam initially; one must remain steadfast and committed to the faith throughout their life. The hadith emphasizes the importance of remaining firm in one’s belief, even after the death of the Prophet, through ongoing sincerity and adherence to the teachings of Islam.
  • The Role of Deviation: The hadith also points out that some of those who initially accepted Islam may later deviate from it, whether through rejecting the faith, indulging in bid‘ah (innovation), or engaging in actions that contradict the teachings of the Prophet. This shows the importance of not just being a follower in name, but of staying true to the principles of Islam in both belief and practice.
  • Seeking Refuge from Deviance: Ibn Abi Mulaika’s prayer at the end of the hadith — "O Allah, we seek refuge with You from turning on our heels, or being put to trial in our religion" — highlights the humility and caution that believers should have. We are reminded to constantly ask Allah for guidance and protection from straying away from the faith, as even the strongest among us can be tested with trials that could lead to deviation.
Spiritual Reflection:
This hadith serves as a reminder that one must remain vigilant in one's faith. The Prophet's concern for his followers on the Day of Judgment, as they approach his Haud, demonstrates his deep care for the well-being of his ummah. It also reflects the critical need for the believer to hold on firmly to the teachings of Islam, avoid innovations, and seek Allah's protection from deviation or apostasy.

Let us Muslims brothers and sisters stay on Siraat e Mustaqeem and remain steadfast on the religion we have willingly adopted and let no Satanic whisperings or coercion by people of other religions make us turn on our heels and be among those who will be denied a drink from the Haud e Kauthar and thrown into hell for being renegades.
